As soon as the dog days of summer are over, Lakeside Village will be getting its very own Woof Gang Bakery & Grooming shop.

Woof Gang, a neighborhood pet-store chain that currently has 64 locations, is set to move into the 1,100-square-foot space that Anytime Fitness previously occupied. Morgan Gritzer, Woof Gang’s public relations and telecommunication specialist, said

Each Woof Gang location is a neighborhood store that offers gourmet dog treats, pet food, pet supplies, accessories and sometimes grooming. Some locations also have a veterinary clinic and doggie daycare services.

The pet store focuses mainly on pet foods with healthy and natural ingredients and sells a variety of them, catering to all diets from raw and frozen to canned and dehydrated foods, as well as the classic kibble. It also sells myriad pet accessories, from leashes, collars and toys to treats and biscuits, chew-toy items and even doggie spa products.

“This Town Hall meeting is an

ideal opportunity for the residents of Dr. Phillips to see a realtime snapshot of existing and proposed developments, infrastructure projects, public investments and other elements that positively impact their quality of life,” said S. Scott Boyd, Orange County commissioner for District 1.

He will open the meeting and facilitate a Q&A session at the close.

The gathering will include presentations from Orange County

staff members, the Orange County Sheriff's Office and Orange County Public Schools.

For each topic, a representative from the respective divisions will give a presentation covering any current or pending projects in the Dr. Phillips area.

Discussion will center on the following: the Sand Lake Road RCA Study, several development projects in both the northern and southern Dr. Phillips area, new school sites and timelines, regional and community parks

Uber-ing around town Drivers and patrons of the popular ride-sharing application share their experience of using Uber in West and southwest Orange County.

David Brady’s phone starts beeping, and it’s off to work.

He will receive an address — which he estimates is only accurate about 85 percent of the time.

Once he arrives, at what he hopes is a correct address, Brady will drive around, observing the surrounding pedestrians, looking for tells.

He spots someone on the sidewalk repeatedly looking up and down from their cellphone, seemingly searching for something.

Bingo. Brady has just found his next passenger.

A Winter Garden resident, Brady has been a part-time Uber driver for nine months. During the week he works as a food broker. During the weekend, though, he takes a respite from his professional attire and typical 9-to-5 schedule.

Brady works as an Uber driver for 15 to 20 hours from Friday to Saturday, making around $200 per weekend — minus costs for gas and tolls, which he estimates at around $35 per weekend. He first started working for Uber when his wife lost her job.

She has gotten a new job since then, but Brady kept at his weekend gig because “it gets him out of the house,” he said.

“I do it because I like it,” Brady said. “I don’t really have to do it for the money, but it’s interesting, especially when you’re meeting new people and talking to them.”

The most common destination requests from his passengers, Brady said, are bars and restaurants. Sometimes, though, people will request he transport them for more menial tasks — such as driving them to the bank, for instance.

Other times, Brady said he endures awkward experiences, such as an occasion when some women in their early 20s changed their clothes in the back seat of his car.

One of his favorite memories is a time he picked up someone going on a date.

“I picked up a lady who was probably in her mid-40s, going on her first date in two years, and she was so nervous,” Brady recounted, chuckling. “She hadn’t dated in

two years, and her mother even came out to the car and said, ‘You make sure she gets there safe.’ I wanted to tell her to call me to let me know how the date went.”

Despite the money he could potentially make if he worked later at night when people finish partying at clubs and bars, Brady usually doesn’t work past 10 p.m.

While a driver such as Brady has the ability to choose to avoid working after 10 p.m., for Uber riders such as Keisha Latrice, an Ocoee resident, the service’s top selling point is often the ability to use it as transportation to and from bars and clubs.

“I love Uber because I am big on ‘no drinking and driving’ and it's very cost efficient,” Latrice said.

“I'd avoid a DUI any day, and the

price of an Uber is a heck of a lot cheaper than the price of a DUI.” Much like Latrice, Brian Homenick, who now lives in Groveland, requests Uber to avoid drunk driving as well. However, he’s had some trouble finding Uber drivers in the Groveland area, which is west of Clermont in Lake County.

“I heard good things about Uber,” Homenick said. “I heard it was cheaper than a cab. I know how it feels for people who are trying to make honest extra money, and I like to support that whenever possible.”

Matt Conrad, a Winter Garden resident, uses Uber primarily for convenience. Conrad goes on business trips often and finds it easier to use an Uber than to sum-

mon a taxi cab.

“While the price is usually cheaper than a taxi, knowing exactly when and where your driver will pull up is a major selling point (for Uber),” Conrad said.

“I have been on trips where I call a cab, only to be waiting without any real status updates. With Uber, I just look at the map and know exactly where the driver is currently.”

Conrad’s one objection with Uber’s services is the lack of an option to request Uber in advance.

“I dislike that you can’t schedule a vehicle ahead of time,” Conrad said. “However, I understand this will be implemented soon.”

“I do it because I like it. I don’t really have to do it for the money, but it’s interesting, especially when you’re meeting new people and talking to them.”

But for some young entrepreneurs in West Orange, it signifies a time when school is out and more time can be spent focusing on making some extra cash.

PRE-LOVED TOY SALE When Franco Umandal, 5, wanted a VTech watch, his sister suggested he sell some of his old toys to make money.

So in the heat of the afternoon that day, the Umandals set up an impromptu garage sale to sell the toys. They created a sign that read “Pre-loved Toys.” “(I sold) a Spongebob pillow,” he said. He also sold a collection of smaller toys and figurines he had.

“It was really nice because a lot of ladies came over (and made purchases), even if they didn’t really need the toys,” his mother Laurie Umandal said. “They found Franco very cute.”

The sale started at noon, and people were still making their way over to the Umandals’ at 7 p.m.

In all, Franco made $54 — exactly what he needed to purchase the Vtech watch from Amazon.

Franco, who lives in Winter Garden, still has toys left over that he plans to donate to other kids in need, through Goodwill or another charity.

He has two words for the community that came out to purchase his pre-loved toys: “Thank you.”

Three years ago, Gabriella Dalmeida wanted to make extra spending money.

She already received an allowance from doing chores around the house, but she wasn’t making quite what she wanted.

One day, while walking her dogs, Balto and Charlie, an idea came to mind: Why not get paid for walking dogs?

Dalmeida, now 14, lives in Independence, so she decided to post on the neighborhood’s Next Door website — a site that allows neighbors to network. She advertised herself as a pet sitter, and when people asked her about her experience, she talked about how she cares for her two dogs.

At first, she started pet sitting for people she knew, but then she branched out to other neighbors’ homes, as long as she could meet them beforehand.

Three years later, she has been hired to watch pets more than 60 times.

“I like it because I love dogs,” she said. “I love doing my job even though it’s not considered a job in a way.”

Dalmeida is willing to watch most animals, though most of her experience is with dogs and the occasional cat. The only animal she says she does not wish to take care of are snakes.

When Dalmeida first started the business, she took care of a dog named Bella, an Australian Cattle Dog and German Shepherd mix. Bella is playful, and she became one of her favorite dogs to care for. Dalmeida still watches Bella regularly.

She likes to stay in the surrounding neighborhoods when she agrees to pet-sitting jobs, because her mother has to give her a ride to any job she accepts.

Kylie Beyl, a 16-year-old student at West Orange High School, wanted to find a way to get a job but work on her own schedule.

The answer came when her mother, Tracy Lewis, received her FabFitFun subscription box in the mail.

The box, which is delivered during different seasons of the year, contains a mix of health, beauty and fitness products. But Lewis and Beyl were especially impressed with the Inkling perfumes in the box, and Beyl decided she would like to try to sell the perfumes.

For everything Beyl sells, she receives 50%. She sells her products at events like the Ocoee Family Fest, and she plans to have a booth at the Winter Garden Farmer’s Market the next time space is available.

Recently, she has begun selling Perfectly Posh products, which include lotions and bath scrubs.

Soon after Beyl began working for Inkling, she and her mother signed up for a mission trip to Swaziland, where they will join a team through Children’s Cup. Beyl and Lewis sponsor a child in Swaziland, so they will get to meet their child while they are there, as well as serve at CarePoint, a safe place where children can go for food, medical needs and education.

Florida Autism Center celebrated the opening of its newest location in Lake Buena Vista with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

and catered to meet each individual child’s unique needs. The FAC’s philosophy is “start here, go anywhere,” and FAC Marketing Director Jenn Elston said that helping set the path for each child’s life journey and getting them to follow it is one of FAC’s goals.

“Getting a child into one-onone therapy is important because they’re sponges at that age,” Elston said. “We have a great success rate getting kids through our program and getting them into ‘mainstream’ schools. We (also) have a school program for our older children, where they go to mainstream schools and (then) they come to us after school.”

Each of the center’s locations has a capacity, but it varies based on the children being served at

the location. Each child requires a different level of therapy and care, and the center’s curriculum and therapy offerings are based on their unique needs. However, because the Lake Buena Vista location is so new, there is currently no wait list and anyone who wants to be part of the center is welcome.

Elston said that eventually FAC hopes to have up to 40 facilities in Florida within the next five years.

In addition to the new Lake Buena Vista facility, three more Florida locations are slated to open by the end of the year in Lake Nona, Apopka and St. Augustine.

“We have some amazing employees who joined us, and it’s been nice to have a local feel over there,” Elston said. “We’re excited about expanding our presence

in the Orlando community as a whole.”

Each location was chosen specifically based on interest or the area’s needs, and FAC continues to identify those needs and expand accordingly. Elston said the Orlando autism community is wonderful and tight-knit.

“I’m most excited that our company remains the close-knit family that we are and that we’re close with not only the employees, but also the families,” she said. “We continue to work oneon-one with families and make sure their needs are met. We want to keep that feel that everyone knows we’re on their side and we’re in this journey together.”

SOUTHWEST ORANGE With the opening of Florida Autism Center’s sixth location in Lake Buena Vista, families of children with autism now have another local resource and support system.

The FAC’s Lake Buena Vista location, which opened less than a month ago, serves Horizon West, Dr. Phillips, Windermere, Kissimmee and more. Located on Apopka-Vineland Road, it is nestled between a preschool and a karate center.

The organization, founded in 2005, serves autistic children ages 2 to 13 and their families. It provides treatment based on the principles of applied behavior analysis — the process of applying interventions based upon the principles of learning theory to improve social behavior.

FAC focuses on early intensive behavioral education, verbal behavior and language training, and social-skills training, according to its website. It also assists children in learning basic self-care and daily living skills, and aims to give children a strong foundation of these skills to be applied in an academic setting.

A stone’s throw from Windermere Town Hall sits a small, historical building, marked not by signage or advertisement, but rather by a garden.

The garden is planted out in front of the building and features plants like basil, thyme, rosemary, sage, tomatoes, plums, mint, blueberries and raspberries.

The name Melvin’s Garden identifies that garden as well as the fine-art and fine-antiques shop inside.

Three friends — Thurman, Joan Schaffer and Douglas Hinchcliffe — run the business. Schaffer operates the business while Thurman and Hinchcliffe own it.

They seek to reflect the history of the building and, likewise, the history of Windermere.

THE HISTORY

The building at 502 Main St. was built in 1910 and served as Windermere Development. It is a misconception that the building was the former post office, Thurman said, but from 1911 to 1913, the building doubled as Windermere Development and the post office while the actual post-office building was under construction. Once the post office moved out, the building still remained as

Windermere Development. It later became town hall, the women’s club, the garden club and shuffleboard club.

The building served as Finder’s Keepers, as antique shop. When Thurman made it his office for John Ashley Interiors — his interior-design business, people kept requesting the building become an antique shop again. Because his interior-design business emphasizes classic historic Windermere looks and incorporates antiques, it made sense to him to open an antique shop.

The garden is even historic, reflecting the kind of plants the common people of Windermere would have grown in 1910.

The shop is home to a wide range of fine antiques and art that have been collected from many places, often from estate sales. The small space packs in unique finds, from Picasso paintings to 5,000-yearold Chinese pots. The shop features famous artists as well as others local to Windermere.

Sit in the shop, and you’ll see regulars stop by to give Schaffer a hug and spend time there. But it also has its critics, especially regarding the garden outside the building.

“It’s a 1910 garden fitting a 1910 building,” Thurman said. “Some people in town would like to see everything in this town redone completely. … We’re trying to stay true to the area and true to what Windermere was.”

Windermere students invent science projects in STEM camp Windermere Elementary School hosted a fourday summer camp to promote STEM education and curiosity in the sciences.

Building solar bugs, designing theme parks, working with binary codes, destroying DVD players and making pinball machines were all part of the hands-on curriculum at Windermere Elementary School’s Camp Invention.

“The whole experience sparked a new curiosity about how things work. We have even taken apart several things around our house since the camp,” said 9-yearold Tyler Bolivar and 6-yearold Kayla Bolivar, two of the 89 campers who participated this summer.

Camp Invention, a four-day science camp based on STEM activities, was held June 20 to 23. The camp is sponsored by the National Inventors Hall of Fame and is a national program hosted in schools around the country.

The summer camp encouraged first- through eighth-grade students to think outside the box by engaging in four modules: I Can Invent: Maker Studio; The Lab: Where Pigs Fly; Crickobot; and Epic Park.

In Crickobot, the campers were urged to build crickets powered by solar energy out of recycled items.

“They looked at the crickets and kind of looked at each part of the cricket, like its exoskeleton and how they could create something (similar), … and they just took everyday recycled items, (such as) paper tubes and bottle caps and duct tape and kind of created their own parts of the Crickobot,” said Lynn Tidmus, the director of the camp and a science teacher at Windermere Elementary. “It was really cool. They learned about the science of how the cricket works.”

In the Maker Studio, the campers were allowed to disassemble

machines and use the individual pieces to build new machines of their own choosing.

“They brought in DVD players or clocks or any kind of machinery, and they took it apart,” Tidmus said. “I mean, they literally took it apart using screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters – they just took apart the innards of these machines. And then, on the third or fourth day of the camp, they used what they took apart to create new machines and new inventions. It was fabulous.”

Using the individual parts from the dismantled clocks and DVD players, the campers built all sorts of machines, including pinball machines, confetti shooters, doll houses and helicopters.

“I loved destroying old machines and then rebuilding them into new inventions,” 11-year-old Manuela Conclaves said. “Our group built a robot on a skateboard. In Crickobot, my best invention was creating cricket wings that mimicked the real sound that crickets make with their wings.”

Eight-year-old Hannah Kim liked the Maker Studio best because it challenged her to “invent something out of real stuff.”

In “The Lab: Where Pigs Can Fly” module, the students did more experiment-based projects, but also worked with binary codes to make necklaces and write messages messages using the coding.

Given the fun the kids had and the opportunity it presented to “dive deeper into the ‘why’ of things,” Tidmus hopes to host the camp again next summer.

“I really hope they come out with a sense of empowerment – that anything they look at, they can explore and discover and go deeper into the science of it,” Tidmus said. “That’s what I really want them to take from it — that science is fun. It’s not intimidating, and they can have fun learning.”

All American Kids Parade & Breakfast 2016

H

undreds of children and their parents made a festive appearance at the 13th annual All American Kids Parade and Breakfast Monday, July 4. The parade is sponsored by the Winter Garden Masonic Lodge, Winter Garden Heritage Foundation and downtown Winter Garden merchants.

Families enjoyed a breakfast from 8 to 9:45 a.m. and got to put the finishing decorating touches on their bikes, wagons and scooters. Winter Garden Police set up a child I.D. table and other activities, such as face painting, temporary tattoos and photo opportunities with “Stove Top” the clown and “Uncle Sam.” The parade up and down Plant Street began at 10 a.m.

SEAN O’NEILL RAVE - Fried chicken at the Chevron gas station on the corner of 50 and Beulah. I went there to check out what replaced Lee’s Cheesesteaks, and to my surprise, the ladies were making fresh fried chicken and chicken fingers among other things.

So I figured I hadn’t had lunch yet and grabbed an 8 piece. My question is this, why have they not done this before? This chicken was so moist and crunchy at the same time! I heard a rumor that Dodges doesn’t do fried chicken anymore so these ladies decided to re-open that idea and made it a WHOLE lot better! The meat as moist and juicy on the inside and the skin was just the right amount of crispy. Great job ladies and awesome chicken!

When Lakefront Farmer’s Market at Summerport Village organizer Shanny Rios started the market, she asked Amanda, who formerly owned Amanda’s Cakery on Plant Street in Winter Garden, to bring sweets. Because the threesome loves doughnuts so much, they decided to bring doughnuts and see what happened.

“We know we wanted a doughnut shop, but we just didn’t know it was going to take off that fast,” Amanda Eubanks said.

The doughnuts were such a hit at the market that they often would sell out an hour after the market opened, so Amanda created the business’s Facebook page.

And people started talking.

The business got rave after rave on the Winter Garden Rants, Raves and Reviews group.

“These are DELICIOUS,” customers raved on Facebook. “I don’t know how we’ll go back to other doughnuts now.”

Although the business is based out of a Longwood kitchen and delivers to the Greater Orlando area, much of the business has come from eager customers in West Orange. On Facebook, the page went from 100 to 1,000 likes in a matter of two weeks.

The growth was exciting for Amanda Eubanks and Dave Hancock, but because they both worked at Four Rivers, they wanted to make sure they could keep up with it.

“I’m not complaining,” Dave Hancock said. “But we tried to slow it down a little bit. … It was going so full-blown that we didn’t want to make anybody mad.”

To meet demand, they purchased better equipment — a bigger mixer and fryer. They enlisted some family to help with deliveries. They also allowed people to preorder doughnuts before the Sunday Summerport market to ensure that doughnut lovers could get their goods without fear that the stand would sell out.

Now, both Amanda Eubanks and Hancock have left their jobs to work at DG Doughnuts full time.

DG Doughnuts always is creating new flavors, working to keep people coming back. They experiment with ideas such as Rocky Road, Banana Cream Pie, Key Lime Pie and Peanut Butter and Jelly.

“Some stuff we didn’t think was famous at first, but then at the next market, people will be asking for it,” Brian Eubanks said.

“It’s hard to predict.”

DG Doughnuts is known for thick, full doughnuts with interesting flavors and decoration.

Many of the ideas for doughnut decorating come from Amanda Eubanks’s background in cake decoration. But a lot of it is curiosity and experimenting with different flavors.

GLENNA RUTH COX DIED JUNE 23, 2016

Glenna Ruth Cox passed away Thursday, June 23, 2016, in Ocoee, Florida. Glenna was born Jan. 2, 1931, in Piney Creek, North Carolina, which is in Ashe County. She was the first child of Winnie and Archie Barton.

Her mom and dad were farmers until 1941, when Glenna was 10 and the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Her dad then went to work as a plant supervisor, and her mom worked for Fisher Body. Their family included three younger brothers and one sister.

Glenna’s first job after graduating high school was working at Eaton Axle, where she made decorations for grills for 1951 Ford cars. Next, she worked for Murray Bicycle Company, where she met and later married her husband, Charlie Cox, who was her inspector at the bicycle company.

Their family grew with the addition of four children, Patrick, Debi, Anthony and Michael.

In 1959, they moved to Daytona Beach, where Glenna went to work for General Electric in the space program. When the space program closed in Daytona, she commuted to Plymouth and worked for General Electric’s light bulb and Christmas light

division.

In 1970, they moved to Apopka, where she continued to work until they closed. In 1975, she moved to Ocoee. Glenna was one of the first people to go to work in Plymouth and was one of the last 10 to leave when the plant closed.

She then went to work for Walmart in the cash office and retired in 2006. In her younger days, she enjoyed playing softball, golf, bowling and parasailing. Glenna received numerous awards while working at General Electric and Walmart. She enjoyed playing bingo and luncheons at West Orange Seniors.

Glenna was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Cox; sons, Anthony and Patrick Cox; daughter, Debi Matthews; and granddaughter, Kimberly Couch.

Glenna is survived by a son, Mike (and Sharon) Barton; son-

in-law, Mike Matthews; daughter-in-law, Sandy Cox; niece, Karen (and Butch) Frye; grandchildren, Chris, Billy, Bailey and Michelle; six great-grandchildren; and three great-greatgrandchildren.

Graveside services are 2 p.m.

Chandler Bats establishes local foothold The locally based travel baseball program, which works with youth and high-school age players, has grown to include 11 teams, with a focus on continued player development.

For Jason Slattery, a local resident and former college baseball player, that introduction was to David Chandler, and it came about three years ago.

At the time, Slattery operated two youth travel baseball teams under the fledgling mantle of Orlando Hard Knocks. David Chandler, the founder of Chandlers Bats — a wood-bat com-

pany based out of Pennsylvania — was looking to launch a youth travel ball program to compliment Chandler’s pre-existing highschool age program, Chandler World.

The reasoning for launching a youth program was simple from David Chandler’s perspective: Building brand awareness with youth players — who generally do not use wood bats — can be challenging. Also, Chandler Bats was founded recently, in 2010.

The success of the new partnership with Slattery was almost instant. Slattery’s two teams

from the Hard Knocks days have grown into eight teams for Chandler under the umbrella of Team Chandler.

Then, in 2015, David Chandler asked Slattery to add the Chandler World to his plate. Slattery agreed to add the high-school age travel program, but with the stipulation that it relocate its base of operations from the Pennsylvania area down to West Orange County.

It was a bold move, considering the presence of several travel SEE CHANDLER PAGE 20

ofia Bernard has returned home to Southwest Orange County with a renewed sense of vigor after attending USA Swimming’s Diversity Select Camp in May. A rising senior at Olympia High, Bernard, 17, arrived at U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs — where the camp was located — on May 5. She started her days there at 6 a.m. with a small snack and swimsuit in hand.

In the pool by 7 a.m., Bernard practiced for two hours, after which she would head back to the cafeteria for a heavier meal.

USA Swimming hosted meetings aimed to inspire and educate the swimmers twice a day, before lunch and after dinner. Bernard said that USA Swimming emphasized how limited ethnic diversity is in swimming.

“They were telling us that …. we have this really special opportunity because of how different we are, that we possess talent in the sport and how lucky we are,” Bernard said. “And [they] just taught us to be proud of who we are and how to keep going even through hard practices.”

Bernard said USA Swimming told her to be proud of her heritage — Mexican and Spanish — and that she should embrace it because it would provide her with opportunities others might not have.

Besides learning new drills and the meetings, Bernard said the camp also worked to teach attendees about nutrition — even going as far as holding cooking classes to show swimmers what’s healthy to eat after practice.

The Diversity Select Camp required applicants to be ethnic and to submit their best times and their IMX scores. From a large pool of applicants, 48 athletes (24 boys and 24 girls) were chosen.

who competes for Olympia on the school’s swimming and water polo teams — has been at work training under Michael Curley, the swim coach at Lake Highland Prep in Orlando. Though the two have only been working together for around a month, the veteran swim coach sees a lot of potential in Bernard.

“I don’t see why she couldn’t be considered for the 2020 Olympics,” Curley said. “I think she’s that gifted … whatever school she chooses for college she’s going to have an impact.”

Reflecting on Bernard’s involvement in the Diversity Select Camp, Curley said a common misconception is that swimming is a sport for the wealthy. He said this is something USA Swimming is actively working against with effort such as the camp.

Bernard says she wants to swim at a Division I program in college next fall and is looking at attending Auburn University. She plans to major in foreign affairs and international security paired with a minor in forensic science.

Though camp ended May 8, Bernard still holds the experience close. She said her favorite part of camp was when the camp held a mock meet toward the end of the trip; she came in first in the 100-meter freestyle, with her team coming in first for the relay.

“Honestly, it’s probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” Bernard said.

She left with a strong message.

“You can’t give up,” she said. “If someone knocks you down you have to get right back up. Life’s a challenge and you have to rise to it.”

Local dirt bike racer qualifies for elite event Horizon West dirt bike racer Jordan Renfro, 9, has qualified for the 35th Annual Rocky Mountain ATV/MC AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented

by AMSOIL, to be held this August at the historic Loretta Lynn Ranch.

This year, Renfro will be racing in the 65cc 7-9 age group as well as the 85cc 9-11 age group. Renfro will be the youngest to race the 85 class this year. Renfro will make the long journey to Hurricane Mills, Tenn., along with his siblings Ryan, Trey and Samantha and parents Brian and Tasha.

The race runs August 1-6.

How did it feel to win a highprofile, statewide event?

We won and it was like we would be the boss of the whole world.

That’s how we felt — we made history.

Did you think your team could win the series before it began?

Yes, because our coach calls us the “comeback kids,” and if we’re losing we don’t get down.

We always help each other up and always focus.

ball programs locally — including a few juggernauts such as the Orlando Scorpions, known for winning national titles and producing consistent Division I talent — but Slattery says he recognized an opportunity to serve players who may require more development.

“I don’t think there was a need for more (travel baseball programs) — I think there’s a need for, what I call, ‘different is better,’” Slattery said. “Our philosophy, in general, is trophies don’t matter. Player development is supreme in our philosophy. We will never sacrifice development for winning.”

Slattery’s focus on continued development has led to a growing program that has roughly 150 players. In addition to a growing interest from local families in joining Chandler’s program in West Orange, Slattery has been able to bring over a number of coaches with professional experience.

Gordie Hershiser, the brother of Orel Hershiser and a former standout pitcher for the University of Alabama, came aboard from the beginning, and Clyde Williams, a former star for Seminole High in Sanford who was drafted in the third round of the 1998 Major League Baseball Draft by the Montreal Expos, joined later.

For Williams, who had previously been working with a more established youth travel program in the area, the move to join Team Chandler was rooted in wanting to build something special.

“I like ‘from the ground up’ type stuff and (Chandler) gave me a chance to grow with the organization,” Williams said.

That players from Team Chandler, which comprises ages 10 through 13, can transition into Chandler World (ages 14 through 17) and remain under the same umbrella is somewhat unique, as many larger travel organizations tend to focus on either youth or high-school age.

“We have an opportunity as an organization to train players — the same way — from the time they’re 10 years old to the time

bed — my bed is always messy.

What’s your favorite song on the radio?

“Drag Me Down” — it’s about not being able to be dragged down. It’s a positive song.

How long have you been playing softball and what do you enjoy about it?

Since I was 5 or 6. I like everything about it. It’s fun, you get to hang out with your team — we win and lose together.

Did you get to watch the Women’s College World Series this year?

Yes, I was rooting for Oklahoma.

What was your favorite memory from this past season?

My favorite memory would be making this amazing snag at second base. There was a lefty, and she hit a line-drive, just enough where I could jump and catch it. That felt great.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

A major league softball player or a police officer. Police officers get to catch bad guys and help the city.

Who’s the smartest person you know?

My dad.

What’s your favorite movie?

“Tomorrowland” because it has a lot of action.

If you could be any animal, which would you choose?

A lion, because I just like lions.

What is your least favorite chore around the house?

Chandler World, which held its first tryout last December at Windermere Prep — the main facility the team practices at — is playing its first season locally this summer with three teams (17U, 16U and 15U). The high-school age program has attracted players from schools such as West Orange, Windermere Prep and The First Academy.

“I found out about Chandler through my hitting coach, John Denny,” West Orange catcher Adrian Delgado said. “I like the atmosphere around the coaches — they’re all friendly and they choose to work one-on-one with you.”

The atmosphere is something that the coaches at Chandler hope sets the program apart, also.

Though the focus of travel ball is the development of players as individuals — and, later, the marketing of individual players to college programs — Slattery hopes to cultivate a team-first culture by holding more team practices than is the norm for travel ball and having the program’s indoor facility in Winter Garden widely available to players.

“If I were to put one word on (the difference), and it is cliche, but it’s passion,” said Hershiser.

“It’s all about having people who truly care about the kid and it’s not about them promoting themselves as a coach and as an adult.”

The youth branch will have tryouts at the end of the month on July 30 for the fall season and the high-school program will conduct tryouts again in December.

Though Slattery says he will not grow the program just for the sake of growing it, he does believe the Chandler brand has found the right base of operations — and niche — here in West Orange County.

“The concentration of serious, passionate baseball players is extremely high here,” Slattery said. “I personally believe that West Orange county has, in my view, some of the deepest talent pools in Central Florida.”

Dr. Phillips Little League had a very good week in District 14 AllStars competition.

Starting with the championship on June 26 for the Minors (10U) softball tournament, the boys and girls from DPLL claimed three district championships in three days: the Minors (10U) softball title, the 11-and-under title baseball title on June 27 and the Minors (10U) baseball title on June 28.

All three are impressive accomplishments for the community at DPLL, but perhaps the softball championship stands out the most as it represents the league’s first district title in any softball age group since 2006.

The girls from Dr. Phillips won the deciding game in a best-ofthree series against Windermere Little League June 26 in walk-off fashion, topping Windermere 7-6 and securing a berth in the sectional tournament.

“I think everybody kind of knew that the potential was there and that it was just kind of untapped,” manager Jes Willis said. “It was a nail-biter and it was exciting.”

The team’s roster includes Julia Benamati, Martrece Boyd, Grace Grant, Angelina LaVerdi, Leona Masangkay, Miranda Murch,

Tessa Olofson, Campbell Romero, Kaylee Romese, Annabelle Sharp, Molly Sheridan and Ryen Wood.

The team is coached by Willis and assistants Matt Grant and Chad Wood.

A day later, on Monday, the 11-and-under baseball All-Stars edged out Winter Garden in an exciting, back-and-forth game for an 11-7 victory.

Zach Miller drove in four runs — two RBIs on a double and two RBIs on a home run — to help lead Dr. Phillips. The DPLL team includes Miller, Logan Wirt, Ian Ballard, Micah Benson, David Dupuis, Jeremiah Granatstein, Mason Henrichsen, Connor Mangum, Carson Nordmann, Logan Roy, Joey Stubblebine and Michael Zaccardo. The team is coached by Mike Roy. Finally, to cap the stretch, the Minors baseball team topped Windermere - American 6-4 in the district final.

The team includes Garrett Lorfano, Johnny Jenkins, Owen Jacobs, Blake Hidalgo, Jack Waddingham, Connor Koivu, Christian Cantwell, Taylor Harris, Brandon Lohr, Madden Bourst, Javier Centeno, Palmer Haynes, T.D. Cross and Sam Collingwood.

The team is coached by manager Gary Lorfano and coaches Joe Haynes and Bob Lohr.

Section 5 tournaments for the three advancing teams are scheduled for July 8-10. The Minors and 11-and-under baseball tournaments will take place at Dr. Phillips Little League, while the softball tournament will take place at St. Cloud Little League.

Stevens Construction Company celebrated its 90th anniversary during the West Orange Chamber of Commerce’s Business After Hours event June 30 at the company’s Winter Garden headquarters, 28 S. Main St. As construction specialists, R.C. Stevens provides new and renovation services with an emphasis on design/ build. Recently, the company completed the design/ build of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation’s new History Research and Education Center on Plant Street.

The project included a new climate-controlled home to the foundation’s historical photographs, documents and artifact. The building also houses the organization’s administrative offices and the relocated visitor’s information center.

R. C. Stevens is one of the Southeast’s oldest construction companies. Founded in 1926 by builder/architect Raymond C. Stevens, the company has earned wide recognition as a full-service design/builder, construction manager, general contractor and program manager specializing in process/industrial and manufacturing plants, healthcare, commercial and financial projects.

Stevens was the first builder in Central Florida to offer his clients a design and construction service.

He earned respect for his integrity, innovation and sense of quality. In the 1930s and 40s, Stevens entered the industrial market to design and build fresh fruit and vegetable packing houses, citrus-processing plants and bulk juice-storage structures, as well as general commercial construction work for ice-making and refrigerated buildings using cork-shaving insulation.

magine being able to turn on lights, close draperies and monitor security cameras in your home with the tap of a button or touch of a smartphone app.

Horizon West resident and tech expert Dwayne Ward can make that happen with the help of some well-placed wiring and his knowledge of programming and installation. He started his own company, Simple Home Tech, just more than a year ago to offer these services.

Ward has always loved technology and previously worked for a phone company and a large-scale, low-voltage company. However, after he got laid off from both of those jobs, he decided it was time to open his own business — Simple Home Tech was born.

Ward gained most of his experience working with the phone and electric companies and continues to research technology and electricity, as well as attend online trainings. He will be going to a training out of state this fall. In this field, with ever-evolving technology, continuing education is vital to running a tech-related business.

“I have a pretty strong networking background,” Ward said.

“When I was with the phone company I did a lot of developing systems for neighborhoods and stuff like that. I’ve always been into integrating technology in the home and controlling things from my phone.”

Simple Home Tech works on everything from television installations to full-home automation systems and everything in between. Installation of security cameras, home-theater systems,

WiFi and draperies in a house — and controlling it all with the ease of one app — is sometimes referred to as creating a “smart home.” Another name for it is home automation.

“If you want the lights to come on at a certain time and the shades to come open, those things will happen automatically,” he said. “We’ve worked with everything, from a guy that lives in an apartment who just wanted a TV installed to 15,000-square-foot homes where everything can be turned on from a remote device.”

Music throughout the whole house is another type of integrated system, which allows occupants in different rooms to listen to their own music. For example, one person can have country music playing on the porch, another can be listening to rock bands in the kitchen, and someone in the bedroom can be listening to Top 40 music.

WORKING WITH WIRES

The main issue in creating and installing home-automation systems and more is figuring out where the wiring in each house is located and determining whether it is compatible with the requested system. Ward mainly installs tech systems in homes that have already been built, but he has also worked on homes that are new or under construction.

“If it’s new construction you’re starting from blueprints, engineering the system and designing the blueprints for the wiring,” he said. “The install, program and testing takes a couple of weeks.

If it’s an existing home it’s a little more difficult because there might not be wires where there need to be, so you may have to use wireless technologies or find out how to get those wires where they need to be.”

Once the wiring is solved, installation, programming and testing unfold from that point.

Ward tries to keep prices reasonable for his clients and works to find space- and price-savvy solutions for everyone, whether they live in an apartment or a mansion. Additionally, all of the systems are low voltage and won’t make the energy bills skyrocket.

“Because all of it is LED it has very little effect on the energy consumption,” Ward said.

“There’s also energy-monitoring services built in to a lot of the systems, so you can go in and see what your usage is and get estimates on light bills.”

Three of the most popular services Ward offers are the installation of home-theater systems, security cameras and TV installations. Prices depend on the project at hand, the wiring locations, exterior walls and other variables, but a typical camera installation can start at $2,000, depending on how much wiring has to be put in. Home-theater systems vary but can start in the $1,000 range if the wiring is already in place, and TV installations start at around $200.

Although he is based in Horizon West, Ward provides his services to people all over the Central Florida metro area.

He’s had clients in Eustis, Lake Nona, Winter Park and even Davenport, in addition to locals in Windermere and Winter Garden.

Eventually, Ward said, he wants to get to a point where he can have more employees and continue to both offer and expand services that allow people to access their homes remotely.

One of his biggest hopes is to have a brick-and-mortar showroom so he can demonstrate his products.

However small and simple or large and complicated the task at hand is, though, Ward is always happy to help anyone with any technology-related needs they may have.

“If someone just needs a TV, I’m happy to come out and do that, too,” he said.

inter Garden’s ZIP code now leads all of Greater Orlando in home sales, according to data from the Orlando Regional Realtor Association.

The ZIP code 34787 encompasses several different portions of the West Orange community. It represents the city of Winter Garden, portions of the town of Oakland, as well as portions of Horizon West close to State Road 429.

During the first quarter of 2016, 325 homes were sold in 34787, exceeding all other ZIP codes in the Central Florida area. In April, the ZIP code also exceeded other local ZIP codes, with 120 homes sold.

The success of the city of Winter Garden is cause for positive numbers, Realtors say.

“Your city commissioners are some of the best in the county, if not the state, if not the country,” said John Lazenby, Orlando Regional Realtor Association president and of Colony Realty Group. “Look at the growth of Winter Garden. Do you have a new hospital? Do you have a developing Fowler Grove neighborhood shopping center that seems to be booming? That attracts from other ZIP codes.”

The attractiveness of the historic downtown corridor of Winter Garden also makes the ZIP code appealing.

“Downtown Winter Garden is a prime reason, because it is different from what we all have in this community,” said Realtor Denise Gregorie, of Watson Realty. “It’s family and family-owned businesses, and I think with bringing the farmer’s markets, the fresh foods, our small businesses, I think everybody loves to support that type of community.”

The proximity of downtown to Winter Garden Village and the chain offerings such as Target, Best Buy and Lowe’s makes the area more appealing, as residents can visit both local businesses and chain stores.

In addition, the ZIP code has benefitted from the vacant, developable land available there.

It includes upcoming areas such as Hamlin and Summerlake, up-and-coming areas in Horizon West that offer access to lakes and pools, giving off a resort-style feel, Gregorie said. It is often what people relocating to Florida — and even natives of Florida — hope to

find in a Florida community.

“When I bring Chicago, New Jersey, New York — all the upperstate (clients) to those places, they light up like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ It’s what they wanted it to be,” Gregorie said.

Inventory, or the number of homes for sale, also has a trend in Winter Garden that is bucking other trends seen in the rest of Orlando.

“While the Orlando area’s overall inventory is in decline and stifling sales, 34787 inventory is actually increasing and contributing to the area’s increase in sales,” said Lisa McDuffie, communications manager at the Orlando Regional Realtor Association.

ZIP code 34786 — which encompasses Windermere and parts of Horizon West — also has a high inventory at 578 homes.

This is largely due to the West Orange area reaping the rewards of the vacant land that is available, Lazenby said.
