Principals take helm at West Orange schools Water Spring Middle School and Thornebrooke Elementary School have new principals.

Korey Bawden is taking the helm of the middle school halfway through the 2025-26 school year.

For the past four years, he has served as the principal at Thornebrooke Elementary School.

Bawden has been with Orange County Public Schools for 15 years, serving as a teacher, instructional coach, district math program specialist, assistant principal and principal.

He is not stranger to West Orange.

He also has served as an assistant principal at Keene’s Crossing Elementary in Horizon West. Many of those students now attend Water Spring Middle.

“I am excited to reconnect with those students and families and continue building strong relationships within this vibrant community,” he wrote in a Facebook post.

He began his career at Gotha Middle School, and in the Facebook post, he said he is “thrilled to return to the world of middle schools.”

Thornebrooke Elementary welcomed Maria Gaspar as its new principal.

With a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a master’s degree in reading education and a doctorate in education leadership, Gaspar is excited to support the

students, families and teachers at Thornebrooke Elementary.

Gaspar has served as an educator for more than 20 years and has experience with elementary and secondary schools.

Currently, Gaspar is the assistant principal at Union Park Middle School and is excited to make the switch and be part of the Thornebrooke community.

Fire Station 32 moves into permanent home Fire Station 32 officially went into operation Wednesday, Dec. 17, and serves the Horizon West and Four Corners areas.

Tucker Ranch wins national award Tucker Ranch Holistic Health, Wellness, Teaching Farm and Family Activity Center is a winner of the 2025 American Architecture Awards.

The 25.6-acre addition to Tucker Ranch Park and Nature Preserve, located at 100 Avalon Road, is one of five parks and gardens projects to be honored nationally.

The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design hosts the 31-year-old awards program.

“The American Architecture Awards are the nation’s highest and most prestigious distinguished building awards program that honor new and cutting-edge design in the U.S.,” according to a news release.

The addition will open later this year.

Two crashes on State Road 429 claim lives The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating two crashes that each resulted in a death Monday, Dec. 15, on State Road 429.

The first occurred at 6:08 a.m. on State Road 429 south of Winter Garden Vineland Road.

According to FHP, the 35-year-old driver from Orlando was driving in a 2012 Dodge Ram Chassis Cab southbound on S.R. 429 at mile marker 17 when he lost control of the vehicle.

The vehicle overturned multiple times, and the driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene.

The 37-year-old male passenger, of Orlando, was sent to Orlando Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

Later that day, a Winter Garden man also died after a crash took place at 2:15 p.m.

The 30-year-old man was driving northbound on S.R. 429 approaching mile marker 29, Ocoee Apopka Road, in a 2019 Nissan Sentra when he ran off the roadway right onto the outside shoulder.

According to FHP, the reason the driver ran off the roadway is unknown.

The vehicle collided with an electric pole.

The man was transported to

Downtown Ocoee was filled with attendees enjoying games, rides, local vendors, performances and more.

The event also included a dog parade, where judges voted for first, second and third places, as well as the best owner look alike.

This year, the city brought a brand-new ice slide to the event, and it was a hit among children and teens.

Families enjoyed photos with Santa, as well as performances from Ocoee High School’s chorus and jazz band, Spring Lakeand Prairie Lake elementary schools, and the Irish dancers from Watters Irish School of Dance.

The night ended with a golf cart parade and a Christmas tree lighting.

very time Marge Johnstone walks through the front door of her Ocoee home during the holidays, she immediately sees a lighted green medium-sized Christmas tree surrounded by lightup Shih Tzus.

The tree serves as more than a Christmas decoration.

It’s a daily reminder of her daughter, Michelle Johnstone, who died in 2012.

Just like Marge Johnstone, Michelle Johnstone loved everything about Christmas and went all out in decorations.

So after she passed, Johnstone took all of Michelle Johnstone’s decorations — the tree, her ornaments and more — and put them in the doorway of the office on the left side of the front foyer. She added the dogs because her daughter was a fan of Shih Tzus.

“I know the minute I put that tree up, she’s there,” Marge Johnstone said of her daughter.

Every Christmas tree, every light, every ornament, every tiny house and every other piece of decor — no matter the size — has a place and a purpose to bring the holiday spirit to life each holiday season.

Almost every inch of the home inside and out is carefully planned and catered to specific themes that pull visitors into the Christmas magic.

“To me, (the decorations are) like artwork,” Marge Johnstone said.

Ocoee’s Marge Johnstone creates her own version of the North Pole every year.

MEANING BEHIND IT ALL

Everything has meaning to Marge Johnstone.

Whether it’s a nearly-50-yearold Bob Cratchit figurine her friend gifted her or the floral arrangements she made herself or the ornaments from around the world given to her by friends and family, every decorative item in her home holds a special place in Marge Johnstone’s heart.

In her living room, there’s a flocked live Christmas tree. It’s the only live tree in the home, and it brings with it a flood of childhood memories.

She recalled her family of nine getting into the back of the truck and going to hunt for a tree. Some would wear snowshoes to navigate the heavy snowfall in Canada. When they found the perfect tree, they would cut it down and bring it home to decorate.

So now she goes to Kelly’s Christmas Trees each year to hunt for her perfect tree and have it flocked to look like snow.

Each room has a theme to it, with every decorative item elevating the theme.

She has a poinsettia bedroom and bathroom. A poinsettia garland wraps around the bedframe with red lights bringing out the warm scarlets and crimsons of the flowers. The quilted comforter and pillow covers feature the red flowers.

A Christmas tree features red and white fluffed and twirled ribbons.

Johnstone said everyone who visits the home during the holidays adores the room because of its beauty and coziness.

In Michelle Johnstone’s former bedroom, which is a favorite among Johnstone’s grandchildren, features a small Christmas tree lighting the corner with some of Michelle Johnstone’s ornaments hanging delicately. Bosco bear, Michelle Johnstone’s stuffed friend, keeps the room company.

“When you pick him up, you actually feel my daughter,” Marge Johnstone said.

Another room transports Marge Johnstone back to her time living in Manitoba, Canada, with log beds, décor featuring a red truck with a tree in the back and a comforter spread saying “home for the holidays.”

There are three areas of the home in which Marge Johnstone sets up her little villages. One is in the living room where it can be seen as people enter the home. Another is in the family room, complete with a Northern Lights background. Lastly, without more space in her home, she was forced to put the final village on top of her cabinets in her kitchen.

Marge Johnstone goes all out for Christmas, intricately placing each item with purpose to theme her rooms, villages and trees.

Outside the home, Marge Johnstone has created a winter wonderland, complete with white holographic snowmen, deer, snowflakes and more.

And of course, Santa and his sleigh stand proud on the corner as the perfect photo opportunity for visitors.

Every year while unpacking all the decorations, Marge Johnstone spends time reminiscing on where the items came, who gave them to her and memories associated with them.

She always puts the Chick-filA sandwich ornament on her big flocked tree that was given to her by a friend who works for the restaurant chain as well as the handmade wreath ornament featuring a photo of her granddaughter that she made when she was little. Each ornament was given to her by someone knowing her love for the season.

SEASON OF SHARING

Marge Johnstone’s Christmas decorating traditions stem from her childhood in Canada. She and her family would decorate their home, but it always was custom to visit the homes of friends and family throughout the season.

“It was always about community,” she said.

So when she was living on her own, she continued the same tradition.

She set up a giant table for everyone to walk around to see her decorations and spend time together. She brought in carolers, as well. To add to the magic, big flakes of snow would fall on the day she invited people into her home each year, she said.

“Presents aren’t important to me; it’s this and everybody can enjoy it,” Marge Johnstone said. “It does good for my heart. It really does. … It’s all about people. You have to care.”

She always has goosebumps crawling up and down her skin when she sees people’s reactions to her home during Christmastime.

Marge Johnstone’s grandchildren refuse to go anywhere besides her

house for Christmas Eve because they want to have dinner and celebrate Christmas in the most festive home.

The most special night of the year comes on the last night of Ocoee Fire Department’s Operation Santa, which was Thursday, Dec. 18, this year.

The Johnstone home is the last stop, and it is flooded with hundreds of people coming in to feel the Christmas spirit, witness the North Pole of Ocoee and enjoy the hundreds of snacks Johnstone prepares.

People who weren’t in the holiday spirit before are ready to celebrate once again after seeing her enchanting home.

She makes it snow in Florida on the night of Operation Santa, drawing people further into the winter wonderland.

Marge Johnstone is proud when she sees people’s reactions. They’re in awe and amazed by everything she’s created in her home. Her mission of spreading Christmas joy is accomplished.

“I have a full heart,” she said.

One local nonprofit’s Christmas season is extra bright this year.

A Heart to Give on Tuesday, Dec. 16, received $680,000 from the city of Ocoee to fund its work to provide resources to families in need across West Orange.

The city presented the check during its final City Commission meeting of the year. The funds come from the Ocoee Music Festival Dash of the Century 5K, which took place Nov. 15.

A Heart to Give’s Terrie Scott received the check.

“We help families transition into stable housing by furnishing entire homes, support single parents with essentials like diapers and formula and work with families on budgeting so they can become self-sufficient,” Scott said.

She was grateful to receive the $680,000 check from the proceeds of the 5K. Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson expressed his thanks to Scott for everything she’s doing within the community.

The 14th annual Chick-fil-A 5K was announced for April 11, 2026, with the proceeds going to help a local charity.

Patrick Panza, operations director of Bike/Walk Central Florida, provided an update on the Healthy West Orange Trails Connection initiative. It’s a collaborating effort between Ocoee and neighboring municipalities.

The program strives to improve trail connectivity, safety and access across West Orange. Panza outlined progress made since 2021, including safety audits, trail enhancement projects, community events

A $5 million fund, originally given by the West Orange Healthcare District, now is being used to move the project forward. Panza announced plans to formalize proposals for a regional trail conceptual master plan. He and his team are working on a study to research the best trail system to develop.

“We think it’s a phenomenal move forward and we’ll really position these trails for success in the future,” Panza said.

Soundtrack to the season S

t. Luke’s United Methodist Church was ready to sing and perform to celebrate the holiday season during its annual Sounds of the Season.

The church brought together a community choir, dancers, community youth choir and orchestra for holiday cheer each night Thursday, Dec. 11, through Sunday, Dec. 14.

The performance began with the usual

frenzied sights and sounds of holiday preparation, anticipation and joy. The sounds of children singing and tolls of Christmas bells as well as dancers dazzling the crowd provided both fun and nostalgia for the audience. It was the soundtrack of the season.

Everyone then went on a journey to Bethlehem.

Winter Garden rolls with annual Golf Cart Parade

Loads of Santa Claus imposters were seen throughout the parade.

any golf carts were intricately decorated for Winter Garden’s annual Christmas Golf Cart Parade Saturday, Dec. 6.

Driving down the city’s downtown area, golf cart drivers were cheered on and commemorated.

Participants dressed as the Grinch, gnomes, Santa Claus, elves and more with themed carts.

Golf carts were decorated as gingerbread houses, CandyLand Express, Disney cruises, “Stranger Things,” the popular “six-seven” trend and more, with floats like elves on the shelves, crocodiles, snowmen and everything Christmas-related on top.

Though the parade only took 20 minutes, hundreds of people gathered on the streets of Winter Garden to experience this annual event.

The lighting of the school’s tree started the event, followed by music, games and activities for the hundreds of attendees.

Guests enjoyed free hot cocoa and ice cream, while food trucks also were present to offer delicious food.

Children were able to get their faces painted, as well as participate in arts and crafts.

A snow machine also was put on top of the roof to imitate snow, and some kids spent the entire event playing with it, enjoying every “flake” that fell from the sky.

West Orange High School hired Stephen Lenzi to work as the new head coach of the softball team.

Lenzi graduated from West Orange in 2001 and is bringing four years of playoff experience from Horizon High School. The Hawks finished last season 21-7, first in the district and made its way to the regional championship game.

West Orange wrapped up its 2024-25 season with a 3-18 record, and Lenzi prepares to lead the Warriors program to the next chapter. Outside of high school experience, he has 10 years of coaching travel ball.

The FHSAA finalized its new football classifications for the 2026-27 seasons Wednesday, Dec. 17. The tentative classifications were announced Monday, Dec. 8, and schools had until Monday, Dec. 15, to appeal them. Under the tentative classification, Ocoee was placed in Class 6A Region 1, but now the Knights are moved into the same classification as Dr. Phillips, Olympia and West Orange. Now, four local programs will compete against one another.

West Orange and Southwest Orange programs’ new classifications are as follows: Class 2A Region 2, District 5, The First Academy; Class 6A Region 2, District 6, Dr. Phillips, Ocoee, Olympia and West Orange; Class 6A Region 2, District 7, Horizon and Windermere; Independent, Central Florida Christian Academy, Foundation Academy, Lake Buena Vista, Legacy Charter and Windermere Prep.

Former Olympia High School basketball player Jacari White reached a program record for the University of Virginia. The senior in college made 12 consecutive 3-pointers and etched himself in the record books. He is averaging 50% from the field and 48% beyond the arc this year. When he was a Titan, he was an important part of the team and averaged 13 points per game his final year before he headed to the State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota, to kick off his college basketball campaign.

The Olympia High School girls soccer team defeated Dr. Phillips Monday, Dec. 15, to win the Friendship Cup for the second consecutive year. The Titans defeated the Panthers 6-0. Olympia currently is 5-4-1 this year and first place in the team’s district. Dr. Phillips is sitting at 3-4-1 this season and fourth place in its district.

Windermere Prep girls soccer team also had a tremendous victory Thursday, Dec. 11. The team defeated International Community School 7-0.

It was the team’s final game before winter break, and they will head back on the field to play at Horizon Wednesday, Jan. 7.

n the surface, Team Orlando Baseball 12U Winter Garden’s fall season looked like one defined by its wins, rankings and player capability. Firstplace tournament titles piled up and a national recognition followed.

The recognition meant more than ending the season as a top youth squad in the country; it meant the team earned a trip to Cooperstown, New York, aka the home of baseball itself.

In June, the Winter Garden 12U

team will travel to New York to compete on one of youth baseball’s biggest stages. The field sits just miles away from the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Head coach Mark Kirkland said it will be his first time attending the tournament, and he’s looking forward to visiting it not only for himself but also for the players. He expects the seven-game tournament will create an unforgettable experience for the 12-year-olds.

UP-AND-COMERS: Here are local basketball players to watch this year year stint, Gillard broke the MSHTV Camp’s 3-point record in a single game by downing 15 and shooting 75% from beyond the arc.

Now he’s a point guard for Dr. Phillips after transferring from Lake Minneola. The sophomore might not have the largest basketball stature at 6 feet.

But Gillard moves with a purpose, drives into the paint and truly taps into the guard mentality by understanding how to move the ball around to his teammates.

Since Gillard’s become a Panther, he has made his court presence known. In the team’s inaugural game to open the season, Gillard led with 13 points and has kept the ball moving since. He recorded a game-high of 21 points against Providence in the Sun Bash tournament.

Gillard already has received college attention, and his first came from the University of San Diego. He is just one of three of Dr. Phillips’ young squad to watch for the remainder of the year.

CONNOR CORRIS, WINDERMERE PREP

Standing 6-foot-8, Windermere Prep senior Connor Corris is hard not to notice on the Lakers’ court.

Corris is a guard with the size and stature to finish alley-oops, but also he possesses the ability to step back and hit deep shots. His athleticism

is evident in the precise footwork he displays every time he steps on the court.

“Not only is Connor extremely talented, but he is also very coachable, a great teammate and a high-character person off the floor,” Windermere Prep head coach Brian Hoff said. “I am proud of Connor and look forward to him continuing to have a big-time senior season.”

Attacking under the rim with Corris as a defender is no easy feat. He possesses impeccable timing, and blocking is one of his largest highlight reels.

Abigayle White Horizon High’s Abigayle White had a phenomenal junior crosscountry season. In the Class 4A Region 2 meet, she ran the 5K in 18:53.8 and placed eighth overall to qualify for states. At the state race, she finished No. 24 and recorded a 5K time of 19:33.60.

What do you enjoy most about cross-country?

I enjoy the team and making memories through laughs and bonding.

When did you start crosscountry, and why did you join?

I joined cross-country my sophomore year of high school — I played volleyball my freshman year — but I joined because I wanted to improve my track times and be part of the team.

What is your biggest accomplishment in cross-country?

My biggest accomplishment is going to Nike cross-country regionals last year and getting the time of 18:31. I was 70th place in all of the Southeast region.

It has taught me endurance, the race and practices can be really hard and how to finish these hard workouts without giving up.

I hope I show leadership and I want to make sure that I am loyal.

What advice would you give someone who just joined crosscountry?

Don’t give up your first week joining, it is really hard at first but it’ll get better as time goes on.

If you were a coach, what speech would you give the team?

I would tell them to not give up if their times aren’t where they want them, they have to let go and make sure they find their joy in running again.

If you became famous, what would it be for?

I would hope as a TV show host talking about astrophysics and cool phenomenon around the universe.

If you had to pick a spirit animal, which would you choose?

I would be a dog because they’re so cute and they are so happy and carefree.

What is your perfect day?

Waking up in the morning to run and watch the sunrise, then go to the farmer’s market and shop, then hang out with friends, spend time at home relaxing and watching a movie.

Would you rather only eat fruit or vegetables?

I would rather only eat fruits, because they are sweeter and go well with most food.

I like to read my Bible before every race and maybe eat a banana.

If you could pick a different sport, what would it be? Why? I would probably pick tennis, because I love that sport and it teaches a lot of mind endurance and control.

Who do you look up to the most?

I look up to my parents the most because they always look out for me and are always there to comfort me.

What’s something new you would like to learn?

I would love to learn card magic tricks. I always see them online and they look so cool and impressive.

OARS rower earns national recognition Orlando Area Rowing Society sent six rowers to the Youth Speed Order, and one returned with an invitation to the U19 U.S. Rowing National Team Winter High Performance Camps.

Orlando Area Rowing Society athlete Liam Cromartie began with the club three years ago.

His former club was smaller, and he decided to make the commute to Windermere from Clermont to participate on a more competitive team. He regarded OARS as the “premier” rowing club.

Cromartie recorded a milestone in his career when he won first place in the Men’s Jr. 1x in the Youth Speed Order Monday, Nov. 24, through Tuesday, Nov. 25, in Sarasota.

“I thought it was pretty cool,” he said of the race. “I hadn’t had that much experience in that boat class, so it was nice getting early success in it.”

Winning the Youth Speed Order meant more than another medal around Cromartie’s neck. He also earned an invitation to the U19 U.S. Rowing National Team Winter High Performance Camps. The camp will take place in January 2026 in Chula Vista, California.

Cromartie said more than 50 athletes from both genders are invited to participate in the camp. It’s an important identification camp to see where the rowers are at for possible national team selection.

“Just getting invited is a really good opportunity,” he said. “Selection camp is very narrow, but that’s the goal.”

The camp includes intense physiological testing, such as lactate threshold assessments done on the rowing machine. Cromartie said they will prick his ear to measure his lactate levels and it helps them calculate where his threshold level is.

Being invited to the camp offers Cromartie motivation for the future.

“Making the national team

would be incredible,” he said. “But it’s a very lofty goal. I just want the opportunity to be evaluated.”

Cromartie’s selection to represent OARS at the national camp marks the first significant step toward his future in the sport and it has reinforced to him that the long commute to train with a top rowing club is worth the drive. He said athletes are picked for the national team two months after the camp.

His teammates will be cheering him on throughout the whole journey, and Cromartie will bring his experiences back to share in Windermere.

ROWING TRANSFORMATIONS

OARS sent five other rowers to the Youth Speed Order to test their individual skills, including Cromartie’s teammate Micah dos Santos.

When dos Santos joined the Orlando Area Rowing Society five years ago, he didn’t expect it to transform his life. He reluctantly joined OARS after an encouraging push from his mom, Kauana, and at first struggled to pick up the sport.

But over time, something changed. A core group of teammates formed, and the days out on the water became something dos Santos looked forward to. That core group of middle-schoolers still rows together to this day.

The junior at Windermere High now is beginning his recruitment process for college and recently stepped outside of his comfort zone by rowing in a single boat at the Youth Speed Order.

Dos Santos finished fourth in the B final after placing 13th in the preliminary round. The result might not have earned him a podium spot, but the experience was meaningful.

“We don’t practice much in small boats,” he said. “We have a big team and only a few coaches, so usually we go out in bigger boats.

Getting the chance to race a single was really valuable.”

For dos Santos, stepping outside of his comfort zone and trying new skills was a crucial step for development. It allowed him to become more well-rounded by channeling a technique he already mastered.

The order was only his second time rowing in a single boat, and he had to rely on himself, rather than a traditional eight-man boat, to pave the journey down the river.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

The Youth Speed Order event, although focused primarily on individual competition with only two rowers entered in the 2x boats, still fostered a sense of team purpose. The six OARS rowers trained twice per day together up until the race.

“What made it nice was just being together in that mindset,” Cromartie said. “We’re locked into OARS training, and we’re not worried about anything else during the weekend.”

As the season continues, OARS rowers will continue to remain focused on improving as a unit.

Their next regatta is scheduled for January, and they are looking forward to returning to their eightman boat, especially dos Santos, who can row with his five-year-old friend group again.

“You get close with a lot of the guys and you motivate each other,” dos Santos said. “There’s a lot of competition, but it’s friendly competition. It makes it a lot of fun.”

He said his teammates do a phenomenal job at motivating each other, especially when they head out on the water to race one another during practices.

From a personal side, dos Santos and Cromartie are hoping to improve their rowing machine scores. It’s a common goal between rowers since it’s where they can see their individual strengths and weaknesses. Dos Santos is hopeful a lower erg score will bring more medals in the spring.

Windermere’s 6-foot-5 shooting guard Bryce Hoffert has been a key player for the Wolverines offensively and defensively. The junior is averaging 15.6 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game.

“Bryce has really taken a leap this year after playing junior varsity last season,” Windermere head coach Mark Griseck said. “He does a little bit of everything for our team.”

In the Wolverines’ first win of the season, Hoffert was named the Player of the Game with his 23 points against Suncoast High School. He plays with a high level of grit and is always willing to push himself into traffic to drive to the rim. Hoffert also does well with pushing his opponents away from the rim and using his stature to force steals and blocks.

It’s Hoffert’s well-roundedness that has earned him a college prospect title. At the Division I level, he’s already received an offer from the University of North Florida.

CORY MCPHERSON, THE FIRST ACADEMY

The First Academy junior Cory McPherson has been back this year on a mission, head coach Tarrik Mabon said. McPherson missed most of his sophomore season with a broken finger, and he’s been determined to bring back his production.

And he’s done just that.

The 5-foot-11 point guard is averaging 10 points per game with five rebounds, five assists and four steals in eight games. He has been a leader for the Royals in their 8-3 overall record this season. His unselfish playing style allows for his teammates and TFA to thrive.

He finished the 2024-25 season ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, District 4 and No. 29 in Florida for his steal average per game, and he is well on his way to regain or surpass that title.

McPherson’s wingspan is 6-foot-5, and that, combined with his quick feet, is what has helped him to excel.

JAMES NOWELLS, OLYMPIA

Olympia’s squad has been on a mission this season. The Titans stand at 8-1 this season, first in its district and ranked No. 2 in Florida.

Leading the Titans on its quest to victory has been junior James Nowells. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard is averaging 20 points per game and six rebounds, leading Olympia in both respective statistics.

His power was clear from the jump in the Titans’ season opener against Dr. Phillips Tuesday, Nov. 18. He led the team with 19 points and eight rebounds, and he hasn’t taken his foot off the gas since. His speed, agility and court knowledge fuse together to make the Titan a presence to watch.

Nowells’ energy also captivates the crowd and fans are never left wishing for more.

“James’ leadership has been a huge part of our success this season,” Olympia head coach Justin Shipp said. “James holds himself accountable first but also his teammates. This has been refreshing for me personally this season. All I have to ask is, ‘James, are you good with that?’ Whatever it may be, James will take care of it and address it.”

Outside of the court, Nowells takes pride in the student title in studentathlete. He holds a 3.9 GPA, which has earned himself Ivy League interest.

The junior has multiple offers from colleges including Holy Cross, Dartmouth, Boston University, LeMoyne and Stetson.

It’s an incredible opportunity, but the trip represents more than just playing in a large-scale tournament.

It also is a chance to share the experience with teammates who have become lifelong friends.

“My son doesn’t have any brothers,” Kirkland said. “He told me, ‘Dad, I don’t have brothers, but I feel like I have 10.’ That’s how close they are.”

ROAD TO COOPERSTOWN

For Kirkland, success was never measured by the number of wins in tournaments. It was defined by the players’ growth. His mission is to develop young athletes to understand the game, believe in themselves and learn how to become phenomenal teammates.

“Yes, you want to win state championships and get rings for the boys,” he said. “But the reality is, we’re trying to develop players on and off the field.”

The philosophy was the foundation of the team’s fall season, which ended with Team Orlando finishing No. 1 in Florida and earning top national power rankings.

The Winter Garden 12U team’s fall schedule featured seven tournaments. The results — three firstplace finishes and four third-place finishes — spoke for themselves.

In USSSA competition, the travel ball league, teams gather points based not only on their wins but also on the quality of opponents, run differentials and overall performance.

When the fall season concluded, the team stood proudly at the top.

“You can say for the rest of your life, ‘I was No. 1 in the nation,’” Kirkland said he told his players. “Nobody can ever take that from you.”

It meant a lot to Kirkland to see his young players come to terms with that message.

“We take the picture; we enjoy the rings,” he said. “But we’re building something bigger.”

ships they developed along the way.

Those relationships between the players are what allowed them to compete at such a high level throughout the entire fall season. The team boasts phenomenal talent, including left-handed pitcher Jack Adcock and an offensive powerhouse from Lucas Gallagher, who batted almost .500 with four home runs.

But the season’s success never relied on one player.

“You take one player away, and we’re hurting,” Kirkland said. “Take two away, and I don’t think we have the same season.”

The team thrived because every player understood situational baseball — where to throw the ball, how to back up a play, where to tag or advance. These details often decided close games.

“These things might sound small,” Kirkland said. “But over the course of the season, they’re huge.”

He and the other coaches intentionally trained their players to grow their baseball minds, especially at the 12U age.

“When these boys move on and another coach evaluates them, I want them to say, ‘That kid knows the game,’” Kirkland said.

MORE THAN BASEBALL

Central Florida is one of the most competitive baseball regions in the country, Kirkland said.

“This game takes thousands of reps,” Kirkland said. “You’re not going to go from amazing to great overnight. These boys are going to sit through thousands of hours of practices, lessons and games just to make a high school team.”

That reality means development at the 12U level is about more than just

the mechanics of the game. The fundamentals and situational awareness are crucial, but Team Orlando places equal emphasis on tapping into the emotional side of the game.

Kirkland said a love for the game is the most important trait to have. Self confidence follows shortly after and chemistry and camaraderie are right behind it.

Kirkland described the dugout as a place filled with encouragement and energy.

“We’re having fun,” he said.

“We’re supporting each other, and then when it’s time to compete, we compete. We lift each other up.”

Before every game, the team gathers together and follows their simple, but powerful, pre-game routine.

They say a pre-game prayer centered around safety, attitude and belief, followed by a phrase that’s become the identity of the team.

“One team; one heartbeat,” the players and coaches say among themselves.

The saying was inspired by Florida State University and reflects the Winter Garden 12U team’s commitment to creating unity.

“If you don’t truly appreciate the person next to you, it’s just not going to work,” Kirkland said.

Kirkland’s mentality has come naturally. Baseball always has been a huge part of his life. He was raised as one of nine children, and his childhood memories are filled with church and long days on the baseball field at his father’s hip. He previously served as the Winter Garden Little League president before changing gears to focus strictly on Team Orlando Baseball when his son became of age.

He wants to shape them into better young men. Spreading that message and allowing them to carry something with them long after their final swing of the bat is exactly what is the true measure of success.

“The chances of any of these boys going pro are very low,” he said. “But there’s almost a 100% chance they’ll be husbands, fathers and have jobs.”

If baseball can translate to lessons outside of the field, teaching them how to work, fail and persevere, then his mission will be accomplished.

“If 15 years from now they come back, give me a high five and show me their families, then I’ve done my job,” Kirkland said.

indermere High School continued its holiday tradition by hosting Windermere Wonderland Wednesday, Dec. 10.

The festive event was held in the school’s courtyard with hundreds in attendance.

New electric dishwashers apparently were all the rage in 1970. They came in portable options or could be permanently installed in the kitchen.

For homeowners who already have a dishwasher, Florida Power touted the benefits of hundreds of other electric gifts to choose from at local appliance dealerships.

The Baltimore Orioles chose Winter Garden for its training grounds for the next season.
