Two Winter Park cemeteries joined about 1,400 others throughout the nation Dec. 15 to honor those who have served the United States.

Palm Cemetery and Pineywood Cemetery both hosted emotional public ceremonies to honor deceased veterans through the Wreaths Across America Program.

The organization allows the public to sponsor wreaths for veterans through a donation online.

Wreaths are then sent across the country to participating cemeteries on National Wreaths Across America Day (the third Saturday in December).

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Dr. Robert Dalton and extend our deepest sympathies to his wife and children as they face this difficult time,” Orlando Health spokesman Desmond Jordon said in a statement. “Patients, team members and colleagues were all touched by Dr. Dalton’s professionalism, compassion and kindness. Dr. Dalton was an exceptional physician leader throughout our organization and he will be greatly missed and remembered.”

Dalton, born Nov. 16, 1962, in Camden, New Jersey, earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City and completed an internal medicine residency at Baylor University

Dalton is survived by his wife of 33 years, Stacy Tilton Dalton; their two sons, Robert (“Trey”) and Tyler Dalton; his parents, Robert Paul Dalton Sr. and Nancy Catharine Dalton; his sisters, Susan Carney and Colleen Sarp;

and his brother-in-law Dennis Sarp. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Patricia Andrews; and his brother-inlaw, Michael Tilton.

A visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, at DeGusipe Funeral Home & Crematory, 9001 Orlando Ave., Maitland. New York bakery plans Winter Park location Financier Patisserie will open its first Florida location on Park Avenue next year.

It’s not uncommon to see a new breakfast, lunch or brunch spot to open on Park Avenue — the city’s downtown street has become a foodie destination.

A new bakery opening up on Park Avenue from its roots in New York City? That’s something you don’t see every day.

The Financier Patisserie bakery is opening its first Florida location in Winter Park. The high-end pastry company, which operates a number of locations in Manhattan, will serve a variety of pastries and lunches on Park Avenue.

It may seem like a gamble to open a location so far away from home, but not to bakery founder and chef Eric Bedoucha.

“It’s a new adventure; we’re going to see what we can do,” he said. “Winter Park will tell us what they want.”

glowing holiday tradition continued Saturday, Dec. 15, as boats decked out in Christmas lights cruised across Lake Virginia and Lake Osceola at the 11th annual Winter Park Christmas Boat Parade.

Local residents and judges lined up along the shores of Lake Virginia at the Rollins College campus to watch the festivities.

The judges selected four boats as winners: Holiday Lights “Dancing Light Man” won the President’s Award for best use of lights; Housewives of Winter Park won the Mayor’s Award for Winter Park Christmas spirit; Captain Grinch & The Who won the Governor’s Award for best Christmas display; and “The Trawler” won the Winter Park Rotary Club Award for best overall boat and a grand prize of $500.

The event accepted donations supporting the Winter Park High School food pantry and the Killarney Elementary School food pantry while also spreading awareness of the cause.

name. Financier is the French word for an almond cake, traditionally in the shape of a gold bar that dates back to the Middle Ages. The cake popped back up again in late 19thcentury Paris, where a pastry chef changed the shape to an oval and named it the “Financier” because of his clients’ high status.

When Bedoucha, who is French, and Peter Poulakakos decided to open their bakery near Manhattan’s financial district in 2002, the name seemed perfect.

“I didn’t even have to think — Financier,” Bedoucha said. “It’s a cookie; it’s financial Wall Street; it came out perfectly. Everybody loved it, and we stayed that way.”

The bakery specializes in classic, French-style pastries, according to CEO Laurent Vassuer. Chocolate eclairs, flan cake, tiramisu and cheesecake are among the most popular dishes.

The first Financier Patisserie opened in 2002. For the next 10 years, Bedoucha and Poulakakos opened a number of Financier Patisserie across New York, including a few in various financial banks.

Théo Goupil, one of Financier’s top chefs, made the move from New York to Orlando and told Bedoucha about Winter Park.

Soon, Bedoucha decided to open a Financier on Park Avenue.

Because the co-founder is busy with his New York locations, he handed the Florida reins to Goupil, who will be overseeing the Winter Park bakery.

Bedoucha hopes the Winter Park location will open in late spring.

ver since he was a child, Bob Maraio had dreamed of it. He dreamed about the wonder and excitement of a sprawling display of model trains — chugging through a miniature community of shops, stations and hilltops.

At age 75, Maraio finally has realized that dream — and he is sharing it with his fellow residents at The Mayflower Retirement Community.

The model-train hobbyist has gifted his collection to the Winter Park retirement community, working together with a club of residents to shape and evolve an impressive model train layout.

Most of the pieces come from Maraio’s collection that he has acquired over the years — and most have remained in boxes and never were used in an actual permanent set.

“The train set was all boxed up, and it came with us,” Maraio said. “I was retired then, and I had hoped to be able to have a layout, but there’s no place to have a layout unless you have a basement.

We didn’t have enough room in the house. I had a decision to make, and that was what was I going to do with all the trains.”

Maraio moved to The Mayflower about three years ago, and shortly after donated the trains to

the community in exchange for a dedicated space to put them.

Eventually, Maraio and some Mayflower residents started The Mayflower Model Railroad Club — a group of about 10 residents that meets every Friday to work on the train set.

“We saw it as a win-win for everybody,” Maraio said.

Together, the club has added to the ever-changing layout, which was once the size of a ping-pong table but has since grown to about 11 feet by 9 feet thanks to some added surfaces. The train set within The Mayflower community includes everything from a church and train station to a replica of Park Avenue, complete with a brick street, shops and some classic ’50s and ’ 60s cars.

Club member Carole Rubin even has taken the time to add trees and a garden as the designated chief landscaper.

“We’re always working on something — we’ve added accessories, we’ve had accessories and connected them to the track,” Maraio said.

Maraio’s passion for model trains started at a young age, when he got his first Lionel set at around age 10. It was a simple train set that circled around the base of Christmas tree. From that day forward, Maraio wanted to have an actual model-train layout.

He began seriously collecting as an adult in the 1980s and acquired about 100 different engines and train cars — much of which now

resides in display cases or on the train set at The Mayflower.

“I never imagined it would look this way — I don’t know if any of us thought it would be like this,” Maraio said. “When we started the club, I was the only modelrailroad enthusiast. Everybody else said, ‘I don’t know anything about model railroading, but I’m willing to give it a try.’ They’ve become enthusiastic.”

Maraio hopes grandchildren and great-grandchildren will come take a look at the trains as well, and perhaps discover their own passion for the hobby.

“We’ve had great-grandchildren jumping up and down with joy,” he said. “We’d like to encourage the hobby in the hopes that some of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren who come over will take an interest. It’s a unique hobby.”

Today the model train is decorated with tiny Christmas lights, wreaths and trees — a miniature village set to celebrate the holidays. Maraio said he’s happy to have shared his trains with the other residents at The Mayflower and looks forward to finding new members for the club.

“It brings a lot of fond memories back to folks,” Maraio said.

“Those of us who are living here … many of us had trains or wish we had trains when we were kids.

It’s something that really brings back nostalgia for both men and women.”

Both Winter Park ceremonies were orchestrated by the William P. Duval Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution — 79 wreaths were placed at Palm Cemetery, and 22 at Pineywood Cemetery.

“It was very important, because our veterans and our military are the reason that we have everything that we have,” DAR member and Wreaths Across America Location Coordinator Eloise Carter said. “Everything that we do every day is because of the sacrifices that they’ve made. I come from a family with military. My father and his two brothers served in World War II, and another uncle served in World War II, and my mother’s only brother served in World War II.” This was the chapter’s first time participating in Wreaths Across America, DAR member and Vice Regent Ann Maner said.

“I hope we will do it every year,” she said. “It was very moving to see strangers come in and (honor the veterans).”

Saturday’s ceremony included a speech by emcee Katie Campbell, a presentation of the nation’s colors by the American Legion Post 286 Color Guard, a playing of taps, a placing of wreaths for each branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, and an opportunity for volunteers and attendees to place wreaths at the cemetery to honor the deceased veterans buried there.

“When I saw the event online and my friends explained it to me, it was just something that I knew

I wanted to do with my kids,” he said. “It’s critical — it grounds you. It lets you understand the bigger picture of things. It lets

you understand that it’s not just the soldiers; it’s their families, as well. It’s the sacrifices they’ve made. … You want to do something and pay it back. I want to pass this on to future generations.

I want to show them the way to be respectful, the way to honor and respect our country.”

Martin Cook, of American Legion Post 286, also was moved by the ceremony.

“It was my honor for doing it,” said Cook, who served in the First Gulf War with the U.S. Air Force.

“I’m a veteran, and it’s nice to serve other veterans. I don’t know if some of these gentlemen passed away during combat or died of old age. But one way or another, they’re all veterans and they need to be taken care of. That’s why I’m on the honor guard — to do my part to help fellow veterans.”

There’s nothing quite like the feeling you get at a football game.

There’s a lot that goes into that feeling — the spirit of competition, the rivalry between teams, the noise and the cheering. A large part of that game-day atmosphere comes from the group that kicks off the event — the marching band that puts on booming performances throughout the game.

And on Dec. 28, Winter Park residents won’t have to head to a football stadium to feel that kind of energy. It will be waiting for them on Park Avenue.

The 12th annual Camping World Bowl Parade of Bands — a prelude to the Orlando bowl game between Syracuse and West Virginia — will feature the schools’ respective bands putting on an extravagant parade show along Park Avenue.

The parade starts at the intersection of Park and Lyman avenues, heads north on Park Avenue through Downtown Winter Park, turns west on Garfield Avenue and ends at Park Avenue.

The event ends with a one-two punch — each band putting on an elaborate performance in Central Park and then all of the students are treated to some barbecue from the city before preparing for the game.

It’s a lively event that is both a challenge and rewarding experience for the city, Assistant Director of Communications Craig O’Neil said.

is a lot of work,” he said. “You have to have a lot of orchestration ready for street closures and figuring out where people are going to go and knowing where buses are going to unload. These are bands with nine or 10 buses each, and all have families following them. It’s going to be busy in the city that day.”

The parade began 12 years ago, when, according to O’Neil, a Winter Park resident and former band member suggested the idea of having a partnership with the Florida Citrus Sports community growth nonprofit. That idea soon became concrete and the city began host-

ing annual Park Avenue parades.

The basic structure has stayed the same ever since — the city meets a month prior for its holiday planning and finalizes the parade plans.

“The residents look forward to it, plus all the teams’ families and friends come to see them play and stay in Winter Park that morning and afternoon,” O’Neil said. “It’s an event that caps off the holiday season; we go out with a bang with this one. It’s a really exciting event to watch — it’s short and sweet but is very exciting.”

There will be a number of traffic alterations in the hours leading up

to the game. Interlachen Avenue between Fairbanks and New England avenues will be utilized as the band-staging area from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Lyman Avenue also will be closed between Knowles and Interlachen avenues during that time.

From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Morse Boulevard will be closed between Park and New York avenues.

The event is a rolling closure, with street closures reopening immediately after the parade passes.

Finding their voices The Trinity Prep forensics team pushes students to become better public speakers through competition.

Whether it’s speech, debate or interpretation, Trinity Preparatory School has the last word when it comes to competition.

The Trinity Prep forensics program continues to achieve success and receive national recognition, placing high in competitions on a consistent basis.

The Winter Park private school competes in about 25 tournaments a year — locally and even nationally at places such as Yale and Harvard.

In the past few years, the team has had a national champion in poetry interpretation in student Lalee Ibssa, as well as a Silver Division Tournament of Champions championship duo in public forum debate last year in Katie Rohrbaugh and Alexis Huang.

“At national tournaments around the country, we find ourselves at elimination rounds pretty

much every tournament — whether that be top 24, top 12, top six — pretty much wherever we go,” said Director of Forensics Nathan Johnston, who has led the program for the last three years. “The team has also grown a lot. We’re up to about 75 kids, which is pretty impressive considering Trinity has about 120 in each class. We have a pretty serious percentage of the school that actually participates in the forensics team.”

Forensic events are divided into three categories: debate, speech and interpretation, an event in which a student takes a piece of literature or another creative work and interprets it.

“All of those events are one person representing the school in an event,” Johnston said. “At the end of the day, they are going to compete individually and try and place individually. In a lot of ways, it kind of functions like a track meet does. Whatever place you get earns your team a certain number of points.

“There are two events where the kids do not compete by themselves,” he said. “There’s duo interpretation of literature — which is two people acting out a piece together — and then there’s public forum debate — which is a partner style of debate.”

200 Club — a prestigious honors society through the association.

The points earned by students in competition add up to what are called “degrees” — or point milestones. The recent recognition is a result of the 2017-18 school year, where the program earned itself 200 degrees.

It marks another accolade for a program that has enjoyed success since it was first started in the 1980s by Dean Rhoads. Instructor Darcy Butrimas eventually took over and ran the program until retiring a few years ago.

“Between the two of them, they really grew the team into

this regional and national powerhouse,” Johnston said.

“Over the course of those 30 years, those two, along with a variety of other coaches (who) have been with the program for some point, really built something special. We’re proud of what we’ve built so far, and we think we’re doing a good job keeping it going.”

The forensics team brings together a diverse group of students “Kids get involved in the activity for a variety of reasons,” Johnston said. “Some of them get involved because they like things like talking about international politics or domestic issues and they like arguing and doing research. Some of them might want to join the team because they want to become better public speakers. Others in the acting events really enjoy kind of the theater aspect. … They like cutting together different pieces of poetry to form arguments about social issues going on in society.”

Whatever the reason, Johnston hopes the program gives participants improved research skills, an ability to analyze evidence and more confidence as a public speaker.

“There’s a good portion of the kids (who) end up joining the team (who) are actively looking for their voices and ways to use those voices,” Johnston said. “I think this gives them a really good outlet to do that.”

Next semester, Johnston will take over the middle-school forensics class, as well, so the school soon will be able to start a middle-school program and compete.

There’s only one thing better than a championship win — and that’s two championship wins at the same time.

Maitland Middle School made history last week when both its girls team and boys team captured the county championship in volleyball Wednesday, Dec. 12.

The double victory marked the first time in Orange County Public Schools history the boys and girls teams at a middle school captured the county title in volleyball during the same year.

Both teams finished with an undefeated season, going 11-0 overall including 4-0 in the playoffs.

“To be able to pull it off with both of your teams … it’s tough,” Athletic Director and boys team head coach Kevin Neff said.

“There’s a lot of schools that have not won one county championship ever.”

The victory for the girls is all the more sweet because of how close the team has come in recent years. The girls squad won the county title back in the 2010-11 season but also has finished as the county runner-up four times.

The girls defeated Bridgewater Middle in the championship game, toppling the team that frequently had ended their season.

“I knew our girls were going to be strong this year, because they were kind of rebuilding,” Neff said.

Meanwhile, the boys team became the first boys team since

the 2007-08 season not only to go undefeated but also never lose a set through the entire season, Neff said. In the championship game, the boys defeated Lake Nona Middle School — another team that had gone the entire season without losing a set.

“This season was special from the beginning, and I kind of started a thing with the boys about making history, because it was the first time we had tryouts where the boys outnumbered the girls,” Neff said. “That’s actually never happened.”

The title marks the third championship the boys volleyball team has won under Neff.

What makes the two championships this year even more impressive is the number of teams competing in the county, Neff said. There’s about 40-plus schools in Orange County, and the top 18 teams make it into the playoffs.

“It’s not an easy feat — we faced some good teams, but we also faced some really good teams that we absolutely dominated and made them not look like a good team,” Neff said. “It goes to show that the skill level and talent on the team was really strong this year.”

When it comes to the boys and girls teams, Neff said he hopes at the end of the day that the young athletes are growing as people in their community.

“My goal is that they leave my program as a better person — as better leaders,” Neff said.

eff Rupert is preparing for his greatest jazz performance yet — same as every other time. “(My songs) have to be the best stuff I’ve ever done, to date, and if it’s not, I’m bored to tears,” Rupert said. “The gig I’m doing on the 26th with my guys is going to be the best gig I’ve ever done. That’s what my attitude is, always. … My favorite gig is always my next one.”

The 54-year old musician has been playing the tenor saxophone for four decades but has taken on quite a few other roles through the years. He is the University of Central Florida’s director of jazz studies, a father of two burgeoning musicians, the creator of the college’s own label Flying Horse Records, leader of a series of bands, the creator of numerous jazz albums and more.

On Dec. 26, Rupert will be reprising one of his favorite roles — leading his Jeff Rupert Quartet for a lively jazz performance at the Blue Bamboo Center of the Arts.

It’s been a winding road for Rupert.

He was born to a family of classical musicians and jazz enthusiasts — some of whom wanted him to stay far away from the music industry — in metropolitan New York and moved to Los Angeles when he was 15. He says the transition was something of a culture shock.

Despite his mother’s best intentions, Rupert always planned on playing the saxophone and broke into the jazz scene playing with Charlie Ventura at 15. He eventually attended Rutgers University and then headed back again to New York City. It’s been a prolific stretch of time, with Rupert believing he has either created or collaborated on 40 jazz albums with another 60 commercial sets.

“Jazz is all about being yourself and showing your style,” he said.

Beyond that, he is often on the road. He averaged about 300 shows per year and slowed down to about 100 since he was married and

had children. He attributes his longevity and success to several mentors, including Mel Tormé and Betty Carter, with whom he collaborated on an album with and won a Grammy for his efforts.

He jokes his career has been downhill ever since but is immensely proud of what he’s done for the past 20 years — teaching generations of musicians how to play jazz. The University of Central Florida extended Rupert an invitation to spearhead its new jazz program in 1995, just a handful of years after he had graduated college.

It’s another avenue for Rupert to express his creativity and pay it forward. He thinks the results

speak for themselves — the school’s jazz bands often chart in the top 50 in the national jazz music rankings.

“The groups I was playing with (in New York) were very structured and very creative,” Rupert said. “I took all that energy and built it into the (UCF)

program. It consciously, or subconsciously, is modeled after the real world. … The kids are getting the kit and caboodle when it comes to understanding the insular revenue streams of music and also how recording works.

Sometimes, I feel like a student on the bandstand, and I’m a musician when I’m teaching — it’s all sort of the same thing.”

The Blue Bamboo performance in late December will be somewhat of a cool down following a chaotic holiday season.

“Last month’s show was right before Thanksgiving, and we kicked off the holidays and played a swinging holidays show,” he said. “This set coming up is going to be a set of origi-

nals; it’s a detox of the holidays, if you will. … We’re going to be swinging and being cool and giving people a chance to recoup before New Years.”

The Jeff Rupert Quartet — a 15-year-old eclectic group with a player in his early 30s and another in his late 70s — puts on a monthly show at the center but makes sure to practice as often as possible. Rupert is proud of his group — his pianist Richard Drexler has performed with him since 1987 — and thinks they are talented on an international level. He said it’s not the superstar bands that are on top but rather the working bands that deliver more personable, intimate shows.

“Those bands are always the most exciting,” he said. “It’s

like eavesdropping on a really intimate conversation between four really good friends. … We play together all the time, the product ends up being a little more organic.”

For Rupert, it’s always a question of evoking a particular style and mood when he plays. For the Blue Bamboo performance, he wants guests to have a feeling of beauty and honestly — painful moments and all.

“Life isn’t just fluffy clouds and unicorns; it’s life,” he said.

“Jazz music washes away the dust of everyday life, and that’s important. People are going to come in and feel groovy and happy, but not in a patronizing way. … People should feel the reality of life in music. To me, that’s beautiful.”

This exhibition provides an opportunity to take a look at the impact of war on individuals, as well as the various meanings of artmaking for these artists working in diverse media and styles. he Winter Park History Museum threw its annual holiday open house party Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the Winter Park Clubhouse.

The hospitality gala had more than 1,400 people from the Central Florida hospitality industry celebrating a successful year with drinks, music and dinner. Greater Orlando Aviation Authority CEO Phil Brown was honored with the 2018 Charles Andrews Memorial Hospitality Award.
