or many West Orange families, one of the highlights (pun intended) of the holiday season is seeing all the decorated homes throughout the community.

We love it, too.

After moving into their new home in Canopy Oaks this month, Grant and Nicole Oberg held a housewarming holiday party, and some friends showed up with a personal welcoming gift: a graham-cracker replica of their house.

The friends gave instructions not to eat the creation, crafted in the Obergs’ Sanibel Model house design, as it is being held together by glue.

The homeowners loved their surprised and have named it Santa’s Sanibel. It is displayed on their kitchen counter.

New market caters to Horizon West The Hamlin Artisan Market kicked off last weekend with more than a dozen vendors and even a visit from Santa Claus himself.

Dirty hands, happy hearts Thanks to partnerships with local businesses and volunteers, Lakeview Middle School students are able to work on beautifying their campus with monthly service projects.

Principal Gracemarie Howland also has had a hand in other beautification projects, one of the most recent being a facelift for former student Michael Canaveral’s Memory Garden.

Michael was a 13-yearold Lakeview student who died March 24, 2009, and has been described as a positive spirit and reminder of the love and gratitude people should have for everything in life. His family put together a scholarship fund in his name, which is given to one graduating eighth-grader each year.

Lakeview’s PTSO heard of Howland’s plan to use her own money to replace the plants in Michael’s garden and was able to get donations of plants, edging, soil and mulch from Lowe’s and Toole’s Ace Hardware. The project was completed in less than a day, in time for Michael’s birthday Oct. 15.

f you’ve driven by Lakeview Middle recently, you might have noticed the main entrance has gotten a facelift.

Thanks to local business partners, city and school staff — all eager to lend a helping hand — students in the school’s National Junior Honor Society and Beta Club have been able to get their hands dirty and make improvements to their school each month.

Last month, at least 20 students from both organizations gathered at the entrance — along with school staff and both community and parent volunteers — to redo the landscaping in front of the sign.

“We are making our school look more presentable, planting plants and updating the campus,” said Emmalee Wilson, NJHS secretary.

“Last month, we kind of went around the front, grabbed all the garbage and threw it away, and we planted mulch around all the trees.

Right now, we’re planting flowers and plants around the sign, welcoming everyone.”

Tony Blair, a Winter Garden resident, got involved because his daughter, Presley, is the NJHS historian. Presley is in the eighth grade now, and Blair said for the last two years she has been at Lakeview, he has been advocating for school-cleanup projects.

“I live in Winter Garden, my daughter goes here, and I just want it to be a nice school,” Blair said.

“This year, we were able to get with (former Orange County School Board member) Christine Moore to donate some money to the school budget for NJHS to beautify the school. I’ve been working with (Winter Garden Mayor) John Rees and (Winter Garden City Manager) Mike Bollhoefer on collaborating efforts to get plants and mulch and trees trimmed and things like that.”

One Wednesday a month, the students spend a couple of hours after school on different campusimprovement projects. They have picked up trash, helped with landscaping and assisted with trimming palm trees.

“Beautifying the campus means you’re very passionate about where you’re learning: You want to make a presentable, cleaner environment, rather than having dirt everywhere,” Presley Blair said.

As Principal Gracemarie Howland and Winter Garden City Commissioner Bob Buchanan watched the students pull weeds, grab shovels and place mulch with the help of adult volunteers, it gave them a sense of pride.

“It’s been quite a few years ago, but I can remember when I was at Colonial High School, and we did projects like this around campus,” Buchanan said. “It gave the kids a lot of pride, and to see the kids out

here doing this just brings back memories of that. You did get a lot of pride in helping out around the school.”

“That’s exactly what we want — students to get involved in their school and take pride in their campus and help out with projects like this,” Howland said. “It makes me feel very proud of them, because … you want young people to take pride in their surroundings and their school and have ownership in their school. This is a beautiful campus, and it’s nice to see the children excited.”

Blair was grateful for each of the organizations and businesses that put time into helping the students bring this project to life.

REC Nursery donated plants; Central Florida Turf and Designs donated time, equipment and sod; Toole’s Ace Hardware donated mulch and equipment; Winter Garden Pizza Company donated pizza to feed the students after; and the city of Winter Garden sent out a water truck to water down the new landscaping.

“We just want to do what we can to help them, and they have pride in their school,” Blair said.

“Doing these projects and picking up trash and things like that, hopefully (students) will look at that and think, ‘Hey, I did that.’

So hopefully, when they see other kids messing it up or throwing trash down, they’ll say something to them and take pride in it.”

BEAUTIFYING MICHAEL’S MEMORIAL

Ten minutes before the Hamlin Artisan Market was officially open, Erin Doggette already had a line of customers outside her booth.

That was the moment that Doggette, owner of Crave Confectionery Soaps, knew this market was going to be a success.

“My sugar scrubs, I literally had those stacked up, and now I have three left,” Doggette said. “Within the first 30 minutes, those were gone, so sales have been great so far. There’s very friendly people in the community, there’s dogs, everybody’s out here.”

The Hamlin Artisan Market kicked off Sunday, Dec. 16, with more than a dozen local vendors participating. Because the vendor interest has been so high, Hamlin representatives wrote on social media, the vendors will vary from week to week.

Lindsay Turner, who works with Horizon West Happenings, was thrilled to see the market finally opening — and the community’s response to it.

“All of the structural needs of the community are being met — we’re building the roads, we’re building the schools, we’re building out the infrastructure — but the cultural needs of the community have been waiting in the wings for their chance to shine,” Turner said. “So now with the artisan market and the Horizon West Theater Company coming, there’s all kinds of amazing things happening. To be able to see it all come to life and have a crowd like this come out and have those needs met is incredible.”

Oakland Do Good Farm plans farm-to-table cafeteria at Ocoee charter school updates impact fees The farm is working with Hope Charter and Legacy High School in Ocoee to grow an onsite farm and provide nutritious school lunches.

The increase in road and transportation fees will give the town the funds to make necessary improvements.

The Oakland Town Commission has approved new rates for its roads and transportation impact fees after hiring a consulting firm to review the fees, which were last updated in 2015.

Raftelis Financial Consultants presented the 2018 Transportation Impact Fee Study Updated Report, which will provide adequate funding for the capital needs of the town’s transportation system.

“Since the adoption of (the ordinance), the costs associated with construction of street and roadway infrastructure to meet the demands of growth have greatly increased,” said Mike Parker, Public Works director. “Additional needs (have been) identified in the recently adopted Master Mobility Management plan.”

The residential roads and transportation impact fees were increased from $2,963 to $3,416 for new single-family homes and from $2,185 to $2,887 for new multi-family dwellings.

Adjustments were made to non-residential construction fees, too, and these vary depending on the land use: commercial, recreational, institutional, office, retail and industrial.

IN OTHER NEWS n The commission authorized Town Manager Steve Koontz to administratively handle the settlement of code liens and special assessments, as long as the settlements result in code compliance and the town is completely reimbursed for all expenses resulting from the code violations. The commission set the cap at $50,000; Koontz must take any case with a deduction amount exceeding that to the commission. n The commission learned the Orange County Board of County Commissioners approved $182,000 to fund the restrooms for the Arts & Heritage Center at Oakland. The restrooms will be open to the public for trail users and town events.

The money is coming from the county’s Fiscal Year 2019 Parks and Recreation budget. n Koontz introduced Elise Hui, the town’s new administrative services manager.

Hui will help with disseminating public information and helping to coordinate projects.

Students at Hope Charter and Legacy High School in Ocoee soon may notice some more fresh fruits and vegetables on their plates.

Thanks to an initiative spearheaded by Do Good Farm – located at 12423 Marshall Farms Road in Winter Garden — the school may soon house a sustainable farming complex used to grow fresh food for the school’s lunch program.

Josh Taylor, who started Do Good Farm in 2010 in his backyard, believes a sustainable farm built on the school’s property would reap numerous benefits for the school’s students.

“We are setting up a farm-totable school cafeteria concept at Hope Charter School and Legacy High School,” Taylor said. “One of the challenges that many schools typically face with putting nutritious food together for the lunch program is the cost of fresh fruits and vegetables. For example, in Orange County, their budget is $3 per child, per meal. I’ve been in the restaurant business for about 30 years, and you really can’t do anything with that besides a cheese pizza and hotdogs. But Orange County does an incredible job with the budget they have. So this is primarily about figuring out how we can do this in a unique way that will allow making this kind of concept financially viable and sustainable.”

ment regarding the farm-to-table project for the Hope Charter and Legacy High schools, and he has obtained most of the legal approvals needed for the project and is currently in the fundraising stage, he said.

The objective is to build a sustainable farm similar to Do Good Farm, which would be maintained by the students themselves, he explained. The school’s farm would include an aquaponics system, hydroponics system, permaculture garden and traditional soil garden, he said.

Taylor estimates construction of the farm, which would be completed in phases, might reach upward of $200,000. The project costs a little more than usual because the school does not have a school cafeteria, and the project would need to include costs for kitchen equipment and

City leaders approved the site plan for the new pool, which will be located on a 3.32-acre property at 205 Windermere Road. The property currently houses multiple pools and swimming-related facilities owned and maintained

by Southwest Aquatics, according to the city documents.

The second approved site plan involves a multi-tenant commercial building on a 1.65-acre property located at 1620 Avalon Road.

The site plan details a proposal to construct 8,600 square feet of retail space with five commercial suites and parking areas, according to the city’s agenda.

The site is part of the Avamar Crossing Planned Commercial Development located on the southwest corner of Avalon and Marsh roads.

The third approved site plan regards a proposed day care facility at 2001 Avalon Road.

The day care, named Goddard Day Care, is to be located on the western two acres of a four-acre site currently going through a replatting process to split the parcel into two lots, according to city documents.

The day care facility would measure 15,157 square feet, including outdoor play spaces, walkways, parking areas and landscaping. The day care would

accept no more than 222 students, said Community Development Director Steve Pash.

SIDEWALK MAINTENANCE

Winter Garden commissioners also approved Ordinance 18-42, which calls for an amendment to Chapter 62 in the city’s Code of Ordinances.

The amendment clarifies the existing maintenance requirements for sidewalks in the rightof-way, which specifies it is the residential or commercial property owner’s responsibility to maintain the sidewalk and the unpaved right-of-way between the sidewalk and the road, Pash said.

“In our code, it says that residents are responsible for the landscaping and maintenance of the property between the sidewalk and the curb and the sidewalk right in front of their house,” Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said. “Generally, the HOA has that responsibility, so it’s their responsibility to pressure-wash it. But if it’s a non-gated or public street, we’ll do all the replacement and fixing of it, but the residents will do the pressure-washing.”

Maintenance of the sidewalk is needed because if the sidewalks are not regularly pressurewashed, mold growth can occur and become a slip hazard, Pash said.

And when kids have a chance to interact with the farm, plant a seed, watch it grow, wash it, harvest it and take a bite out of it, they’re much more likely to eat their vegetables. That’s what we’ve found, because we have some school field trips come here and the kids are eating all kinds of crazy, really nutritious stuff.”

IN OTHER NEWS n City leaders approved the condemnation of a vacant home located at 509 S. Lakeview Ave. According to Pash, a felled tree damaged the home during Hurricane Irma and the owner has since died. The city will demolish the home at a cost of $5,000 and place a lien on the property. n City commissioners approved the final plat for Phase II of the McAllister Landing residential development located at 315 E. Fullers Cross Road. The plat includes 54 new single-family lots on 19.28 acres. n City leaders also approved a resolution that allows the operation of golf carts on portions of Tildenville School and Lakeview roads. n Commissioners postponed the first readings for Ordinances 19-08 and 19-09 regarding pensions and retirement benefits for firefighters, police officers and general city employees. The commission also postponed the second reading of Ordinance 18-41, which regards the rezoning of .33 acres located at 22 E. Miller St. from City R-2 Residential District to City R-NC Residential Neighborhood Commercial District.

West Colonial Drive. Cannabis possession. At midnight, an officer conducting stationary speed enforcement on West Colonial Drive near Vizcaya Lake Road spotted a vehicle traveling at 70 mph.

The officer conducted a traffic stop and requested the driver’s documentation, but the driver informed the officer he did not have a license. He then told the officer he was in a hurry because he was heading toward the hospital to see his son’s birth. When asked which hospital, the driver stated he did not know. The passenger chimed in and said it was Health Central Hospital, and the officer informed them they had already passed the hospital. The officer then searched the driver and discovered a large bag containing cannabis that fell out of the driver’s shorts from between his legs. The driver was charged with possession of marijuana and driving without a license.

10500 block of West Colonial Drive. Retail theft. At 9 a.m., a law-enforcement officer was dispatched to a large department store. When the officer arrived, he was informed by a store manager that a 58-yearold man had attempted to steal $420 worth of merchandise by exiting the store through the tire and lube center in a motorized shopping cart. When confronted, the man told the manager the merchandise was all presents for his grandkids.

The man was placed in a patrol vehicle for transport to Orange County Jail, where he stated he

was not scared of the officer and would break the officer’s neck when given the chance. The man then started to pass gas in the patrol vehicle.

17500 block of West Colonial Drive. DUI. At about 8:50 p.m., an officer parked at a gas station spotted a woman attempting to open her car’s door. According to the officer, it appeared “as if (the woman’s) neck could not support her head, as it was continually swaying, bobbing, and swinging,” which caught the officer’s attention. After entering her car and backing out of her parking space, the woman took several too-wide turns that led her into lanes designated for oncoming traffic. After the third time, the officer, who had been following behind, pulled her over. While interacting with the driver, the officer noticed she was unable to control her head and was talking very rapidly and periodically sticking her tongue out. When asked why she was doing that, the driver said she did not realize she was and said she was thirsty. The officer then asked if she had any medical conditions that could impair her driving ability. She did not, but added she is currently prescribed amlodipine, palate, lamotrigine and clonazepam. During a vehicle search, the officer located a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine in the seams of the driver seat. The driver was arrested and charged with a DUI.

WHAT IS CYSTIC FIBROSIS? Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time.

People with CF have inherited two copies of the defective CF gene — one copy from each parent. People with only one copy of the defective CF gene are called carriers, but they do not have the disease.

A defective gene causes a thick, sticky buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and, eventually, respiratory failure.

In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.

Most children now are screened for CF at birth through newborn screening.

More than 30,000 people in the U.S. are living with cystic fibrosis; about 1,000 new cases are diagnosed each year.

Each day, people with CF complete a combination of the three therapies: airway clearance, inhaled medicines and pancreatic enzyme supplements.

In the 1950s, a child with CF rarely lived long enough to attend elementary school. Today, the average survival age is close to 40.

Beyond diagnosis Bobby Foster sought a life coach and became one himself to control his cystic fibrosis instead of letting it control him.

When Bobby Foster was born 24 years ago, he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis and given a 10-year life expectancy. He has doubled that, and then some.

Foster said he had a mild case of it; he was always in the 90th to 100th percentile for lung function — and he was fairly healthy growing up.

Until he reached high school.

“In high school, I got mono, and that mixed with everything with CF … after that happened I was in the 20th percentile,” said Foster, a 2011 graduate of Olympia High School.

Visits to doctors’ offices and to the hospitals were routine for Foster, and regular school attendance was difficult. He estimates he probably missed half the school year during his sophomore through senior years.

Still, he was voted class president three years in a row, chosen Mr. Olympia and named to the prom and homecoming courts.

“Usually, that would make it easier on the bullying side, but my

illness is invisible,” Foster said.

“Especially because I grew up healthy, people had expectations of me because they didn’t see my illness. So when it showed up, it led to a lot of bullying — not from the students, from the adults.

“They would say, ‘Bobby’s not that sick,’” he said. “That’s the bad part of it being invisible.”

His mother had to fight for his disability rights in school, he said.

After obtaining a creative writing degree at the University of Central Florida, Foster was running a social-media marketing company when he was introduced to someone who would completely change his life.

Life coach Christina Cooper Foster came up with a coaching plan for Foster, and their professional relationship would continue for more than two years.

“She asked me a question that was so life-changing,” he said.

“She asked me why I needed my CF, and I was so offended by that question. … And then it dawned on me two weeks after I talked to her.

“CF gives me this experience of unconditional love, to be empa-

thetic, to understand what pain and suffering for others is,” Foster said.

“Being able to heal that suffering, being able to understand that everyone is suffering from something and understanding people’s pain, there’s a gateway for transformation, but you have to have that awareness,” he said. “A lot of people don’t even know that they’re hurting or what they’re hurting from.”

After working with his life coach, Foster was inspired to start his own practice, what he calls Alchemy of Life: Transformational Life Coaching, to help others living with cystic fibrosis to take their suffering and turn it into joy.

He establishes goals for growth and wellness in CF patients, guided by the belief that emotional and

spiritual wellness is as important as physical wellness.

Foster said he has two choices each day: “I can see it as, ‘Ah, this sucks. I want my life back.’ Or I can go the other way, (and) I can show myself compassion and love.”

After a lifetime of witnessing suffering, he said, he was ready to accept the lessons of unconditional love.

“We can just make our lives that much more enjoyable,” Foster said. “Make other people’s lives much more enjoyable by being the example.”

GRANT RECOGNITION

Recently, Foster received word that he has been awarded a $10,000 Impact Grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for his work with the CF community. He said

he will use the money to improve Alchemy of Life. He wants to set up an ideal office space for his conference calls — clients with CF cannot be within six feet of one another because of bacteria and infections. He hopes to purchase office equipment and to provide himself a small salary, as well.

Foster’s life-coaching practice accepts all clients, not just those with cystic fibrosis, but clients with the illness pay no fees.

“It’s me giving the client their power back,” he said. “It’s really just a rediscovery of your power.”

Foster still fights CF daily, mostly coughing and sinus headaches, but changing his diet and scheduling regular cardio workouts has had a tremendous effect on the disease’s severity.

Life is good for Foster, who recently got engaged and moved from Winter Garden to Apopka.

He still fights the guilt and shame of having a chronic illness that might allow him to walk a mile one day and keep him in bed the next — so his mental health is a top priority.

“One of the things I try to preach is that even though I have this disease, everything in my life could also affect my health,” Foster said.

“My mental health could affect how I’m feeling. My diet could affect how I’m feeling.

“For a while I was blaming CF for everything I was feeling,” he said. “But it made me not be able to see that it was my mental health or my diet. That was a big breakthrough for me. I stopped blaming my CF for everything. I feel like that allowed me to get it under control.”

Garden Music School opens new spaces, classes ERIC GUTIERREZ STAFF WRITER

Garden Music School has got some new additions for its students and customers.

Locals gathered Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the music school on 40 S. Main St. in downtown Winter Garden to check out its latest offerings. Garden Music School recently renewed its facilities and now features a theater stage for performances.

“We’ve rebuilt the interior of (the facility) entirely, and now (we’ve got) a theater with a lit sound stage (and) a professional PA system,” Manager Jim Young said. “It’s a professional little stage. We’ve got it professionally lit with all kinds of cool, different colored (lights). … All the instruments are set up on the stage, and it’s ready to rock.”

Young said one thing that sets Garden Music apart from other music schools is how much emphasis Garden Music puts on having its students on stage.

“We’re very performance-oriented at Garden Music, so we like for our students … to get up on stage,” Young said. “We have all kinds of opportunities for them to play in front of crowds and things like that. … Even some of our private instructors will do some of their private lessons on the stage — particularly our vocal coaches — to kind of give the students a change to be up on stage and kind of feel what it’s like.”

“Our group-class concept is a new concept, as well,” Young said. “The way that works is we bring anywhere from 40 to 50 students or so, and we focus on the rhythm-section instruments, or the ‘rock ’n’ roll’ instruments — vocals, bass, guitar, drums and keyboard. We bring all (the students) together and we teach them (music) theory.”

Young added that group classes focus on the basics and are open to beginners of all ages. During class sessions, students learn some music principles in a large group setting with everyone in the same room and then are divided into smaller groups.

“We start from the ground up, so it’s for stark beginners,” Young said. “We divide them up into different classrooms by instrument.”

In addition to music lessons, Garden Music offers a recording studio and a rehearsal room fully equipped with instruments and equipment. Both spaces are available for rent, and the business even offers lessons recording lessons for aspiring music producers.

n the spirit of Christmas and with prizes in sight, Winter Garden residents prepare their golf carts this time each year for the annual holiday-themed parade down Plant Street. Strings of lights and inflatable characters are secured to the carts, Christmas music plays from speakers and the decorations and themes seem to get more intricate with each passing year. This year’s Christmas Golf Cart Parade, held Sunday, Dec. 16, drew more than 100 entrants and raised more than $7,300 for Winter Garden’s Police Athletic League and the Edgewood Children’s Ranch.

The West Orange Jaycees made festive cutouts and decorated the ACL freight depot for the holidays. Stan Smith and his committee spent many hours on the planning and completion, and Ernest Crawford and Charles Crosslin helped make and install Santa Claus and his sleigh and reindeer on the roof.

Larry Grimes was general chairman of the downtown’s “Christmas in Winter Garden 1968,” presented in connection with the Winter Garden Chamber of Commerce. Members of the First United Methodist Church created a live Nativity scene, and Al Valdes was makeup man. Six charming girls dressed as penguins staged a cha-cha dance: Rebel Lee Palmer, Janet Green, Sandy White, Elizabeth Walker, Melodye Hendrix and Lori Smith.

The University of Tennessee likes to have a Tennessee Walking Horse at all of its football games. By special arrangement with L. Frank Roper, owner of many walking horses,

they were well represented at the Gator Bowl contest in Jacksonville. Mr. Frank went around the field on Sun’s Last Chance, last year’s Southern Champion, and led the Tennessee team out on the field.

The new edition of the Orange County School Board wasted no time in reversing the flip of starting times of high school and middle schools that was put in place this year. Starting next year, high schools once again will begin at 7:30 a.m. and middle schools at 9:30.

oe Alarie tapped his gavel on the podium to mark the end of his one-year commitment to the West Orange Chamber of Commerce as chairman. During the Membership Appreciation Brunch, held Thursday, Dec. 13, at Valencia College, Alarie passed the gavel to the incoming chairman, Tim Haberkamp.

The Chamber Ambassadors were recognized, too. They are present at all Chamber events and at business grand openings and ribbon cuttings.

JOHN EDWARD STEIN DIED THURSDAY, DEC. 13, 2018.

John Edward Stein, 43, of Ocoee, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at Collison Carey Hand Funeral Home, 1148 E. Plant St., Winter Garden, Florida. Interment will follow in Ocoee Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, at the funeral home.

Joe Leaon Rushing, 86, of Winter Garden, Florida, died on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018. Joe, son of the late Dan and Clydell Rushing, was born on Jan. 25, 1932, in Enterprise, Alabama.

He attended Lakeview High School in Winter Garden, served in the Korean War with the Army and then graduated from the University of Florida. He was a career hospital pharmacist, working for ORMC (now Orlando Health) for 17 years, and worked in numerous other pharmacies around Central Florida, finishing his career at Lakeland Regional Hospital with almost 50 years in pharmacy.

He was an avid reader and SEC football fan (his beloved Gators), loved classical music as well as classic country music, and enjoyed most any sports event.

He taught Sunday school classes for many years and loved the Lord Jesus Christ. He was a kind and selfless man.

Joe is survived by his wife of 63 years, Margaret; and five children, Mike, Beth, Ken (Gina), Kim (Mike) Mitchell and Van (Marie).

He is also survived by 10 grandchildren.

Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Nadine (Richard) Kannon, and brother, James.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2018, at Quest Church, 1450 Citrus Oaks Ave., Gotha, FL 34734.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be sent to Music Mission Kiev, musicmissionkiev.org/give, to assist the lives of children, orphans and widows.

Warriors girls basketball off to hot start In his third year at the helm of the West Orange girls team, head coach Shrell Chamberlain has his team heading in the right direction.

If you look up the word “domination,” you may just find a team photo of the West Orange girls basketball team.

Since taking over the program three years ago, head man Schrell Chamberlain has led the Warriors out of the cellar and has molded them into one of the best teams in the area.

So far this season, the Warriors are 8-1 through nine games, with the only loss coming at the hands of district rival Wekiva.

“We got all of our starters back — that’s the main thing we have,” Chamberlain said. “We have four seniors who are going to play collegiate ball next year, mixed with some strong juniors.

So we got our core back, but then we probably have two of the best freshmen in the state, SEE WEST ORANGE PAGE 18

E

very time Luke Chase and the Foundation Academy Lions take to the field, the outcome is all but assured.

As the Lions’ defense shuts down opposing teams, Chase and his friends up front push through and dominate without hesitation.

The offensive onslaught brought fourth by the Lions is enough to make you do a double take when you look at the stat lines. And that success, Chase said humbly, is thanks to team effort.

The West Orange girls basketball team is fighting its way through the season.

“The team as a whole are gelling quite well together,” Chase said. “Our first game together was a tough loss against Orangewood, but for a lot of us, it was our first time playing together as a team. Ever since then, we’ve been working hard trying to gel, and ever since, we’ve been doing quite well.”

Although that preseason game against the Rams doesn’t show on the record books, it was the early fuel that stoked Chase’s fire.

Since then, the senior captain and his team have done more than just “quite well.” Outside of a 1-1

tie in the opener against Master’s Academy, Chase has helped lead the way to six straight wins for the Lions — who have outscored opponents six-to-one-half per game.

A big part of that goal discrepancy is Chase’s golden boot, which has contributed nine goals. His scoring only is matched by teammate Ian Garcia, who also has found the net nine times. Although he is only seven games into this season, Chase is only three goals from matching last season’s output of 12.

It’s still early in the season, but Ocoee High junior Jahnecia Charles is putting up some impressive numbers for the girls basketball team. Per game, the power forward is averaging 7.5, 8.2 rebounds and 3.2 steals.

She’s a star in academics, too, maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

How did you get started playing basketball?

When I was 9, my parents couldn’t pick me up after school for summer camp, so they signed me up for a basketball program, the Junior Magic.

My family loves basketball, and they support me 100% and everything I do.

What do you love about basketball?

I guess the rush I get, because even though there’s a lot of people in the crowd, I don’t see or hear them. It’s just me, myself, the ball and the goal.

Is there a game so far this season that has been a highlight for you?

It would probably be last Tuesday, Dec. 11 — my mom’s birthday — because we played against Jones, and she said, “Don’t go all out,” but I did, just for her.

Tell us about the dynamics of your team this season.

This year, we have a lot of freshmen, so we get to know each other and learn their different strengths and weaknesses.

We encourage each other on and off court, and we bond over food.

THE BASICS

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?

I’d probably say my mom, because she’s one of the hardest-working women I’ve ever met in my life. As a single parent, she just found ways to do anything and everything and make me feel like I’m more than average.

Which of your teammates is the funniest?

Probably Jakayla Jackson. She’s the funniest, because she’s just a whole character — she sings, acts, dances and she’s amazing. She’s hilarious.

What would you say are some of your strengths and weaknesses?

I like to just watch a bunch of informal videos. My favorite TV show is “Adam Ruins Everything,” because I learn something new every time I watch it.

That core group of athletes — which includes players such as seniors Morgan Beacham, Sarah Placide and Kennedi Rodgers — has been a part of the program that Chamberlain has led to an overall record of 55-14 in the last three years, which includes a district title and back-to-back playoff appearances. The Warriors’ district title last year was the first since the 2011-12 season.

This year’s team is balanced on both sides of the ball. Offensively, the Warriors have the outside shooting threats of players such as Beacham and Rodgers, while the size of interior players such as freshman forward Paris Pickett (6-foot-3) and Placide (6-foot-1) allows the team the ability to knock around undersized defenses.

“Paris is 6-foot-3 and is getting offers already, and I mean, she is already averaging — as a freshman — 15 points per game,” Chamberlain said. “She has a skill set that I’ve never seen a freshman have. She is just a big

presence down low.”

While there’s a lot to be proud of with his team, one of Chamberlain’s favorite aspects about West Orange is not even related to basketball. In a time when student-athletes transfer from school to school in search of a place that will help them get to the next level, the total opposite is happening at West Orange.

The players on his team are all home-grown.

“We are all representing the Winter Garden community,” Chamberlain said. “I don’t think people understand that at West Orange, we are a community team. Everybody that goes to West Orange lives in Winter Garden and the West Orange area.

“That’s the neat thing that we are doing in our community,” he said. “It’s cool that they’re successful and that they’re really representing west Orlando.”

Helping to build this team and its identity are things that Chamberlain has been working on ever since he was brought on board to help revive a struggling program.

field awareness have led him to being the ultimate assist man on the field, said head coach Josh Mansingh.

“It’s fun watching him play,” Mansingh said. “The reason he has so many assists is because he isn’t selfish. Even though he can score, he’s willing to make the easier pass for the team to score.

That’s what makes him an effective leader.”

Chase’s eight assists lead the team by a landslide, and it’s one of the reasons why Mansingh tapped him as the team’s only captain for this season.

Even though Chase served as team co-captain during his junior season last year, this new role is a bit more than what he had been used to.

Now, instead of having someone else to help, the weight of being the team’s leader comes solely down to him. It’s something that is difficult in some aspects — requiring him to keep his composure during tough times — but also provides its own rewards.

“I would say the biggest part is being encouraging in every aspect, so whether it’s a bad shot or a bad pass, just say, ‘That’s unlucky, you’ll get it next time,’” Chase said. “Don’t fill their mind with doubt in themselves, but just encourage them and help them find that self-confidence.”

Chase has come quite a way as a soccer player for Foundation, especially when you consider he came to the school looking to play football.

Although he had played soccer as a kid for several years, Chase had gotten out of the sport for a few years before coming back to The Beautiful Game back in middle school.

As a homeschooled student, Chase was looking to play sports, and that’s when a friend told him to go try out for the Lions’ football program. Then, three years ago, he decided to try out for soccer. From there, he shifted his focus to the pitch.

“The team is like another family — it’s been a great experience and they welcomed me in,” Chase said.

Chase has also picked up playing time at GGS Soccer Academy in Orlando. But instead of scoring goals for his club team, he’s doing the polar opposite.

As a center-back, Chase keeps pace with attacking players as he stands as the last line of defense before opposing teams get to the goalie. Ironically, his time playing at a defensive position has been a net positive for his game at Foundation.

“That actually helps me a lot here at Foundation, because I get to see what defenders are going to do, because I am that defender most of the time,” Chase said. “It gives me kind of an advantage in some ways.”

The versatility of playing on both sides of the ball have helped bump Chase’s game up in a big way, which is exactly what he will need if he wants to accomplish his goal after graduating — to play at the collegiate level.

“It’s a dream for me,” Chase said. “I love this sport and everything about it. Of course, the practices are hard, and I want to say it’s easy every day, but it’s not — it’s what I love.”

through the years have bolstered the girls basketball team to the point now where finding colleges for the girls has become a bit easier.

But before Chamberlain’s seniors can give thoughts to college ball, they have to help their team reach the next stepping stone — a difficult task given how hard the upcoming schedule is for the Warriors.

“We do not have a game left after next week that is a guaranteed win,” he said. “Outside of district play, we could lose seven games still this year — which I understand — but it will get us ready for the playoffs.”

For Chamberlain, developing his players always has been his No. 1 priority, but there is the hope he and the Warriors can push past the regional semis of the playoffs — the place where his team has been sent packing the last two years.

“This year our goal is to just get one step farther, and that really is regional finals and then possibly making the states,” he said.

“We know that in the back of our heads that we have to make it farther than we did last year.”
