Ruth Hey, a Windermere mother of four, begins her day hours before her family is awake so she can train for competitions such as the IronMan triathlon.

COMMUNITY EDITOR WINDERMERE It’s just 6:30 in the

morning, well before the sun rises, and most of Ruth Hey’s household is still in bed. She has already had her morning workout — but as a mother of four children ages 4 to 13 and a part-time nursing supervisor with Orlando Health, her entire day is really a workout and life is as challenging as a triathlon.

The Windermere resident’s early mornings are devoted to training: The lifelong runner has become passionate about IronMan challenges, both full and half. Her last competition, held in November in Panama City Beach, garnered her another finisher’s medal and a time of 12:32:31.

Her family accompanies her at various points along the competition route, shaking their cowbells and holding up handmade signs that read “My mom is an IronMan,” “Way to go, Mom,” and “Keep running.”

This is what keeps her motivated on the long courses, she said.

A full IronMan consists of a 2.4mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

In addition to the two full events, she has completed three half triathlons, which each total 70.3 miles in length.

One of Ruth Hey’s biggest supporters is her husband, Paul.

“Just the fact that you completed it. One of my main goals was just to get to the start line with my body intact and my family intact.

It’s hard on the family when you have a mom who is training that hard.”

TRAINING REGIMEN

On the weekends, Hey spends up to six hours swimming at L.A. Fitness. She said she owes her husband about 12 Saturdays because he always stays home with the kids while she trains.

She also participates in a triathlon group in Orlando called Find the Edge with coaches Jamie Lynch and Cherie Shook — Tuesdays are speed days, and Thursdays are tempo days — and does strength training weekly at iFit, owned by Andy Roper, in Ocoee.

Hey has always been a runner.

She was a track-and-field champion in school and earned a scholarship to run at Louisiana State University, but she deferred it. She kept running, however, even after she had children.

Now 43, she became interested in triathlons because she enjoys the diversity of the three-sport event. Her first was in August 2014 in Louisville, Kentucky. Her time was 12:56:53.

“I like the challenge, and it makes me stronger,” Hey said. “I think I handle the challenges of life better, and it makes me stronger.”

After months of training, she tries to stay off her feet as much as she can the day before the big race. It’s also a day of loading up on carbohydrates and fluids.

Having the race day gear packed and organized is essential to having a good race.

“You have a transition area, and you put your stuff in a swim-tobike transition bag; transition two is bike-to-run,” she said. “You go into a tent and change from a wet suit to bike gear. And then after the bike, you take off your cycling shoes and put on your running shoes.”

While this is taking place, Paul and the children are mapping the route and keeping up with her through the IronMan tracker.

They know when she will pass by, so Paul can take a few photos, and then they are off to the next location to see her go by again. At the finish line, it’s a family celebration.

DIGGING DEEP

Hey coaches the Girls on the Run program at Windermere Elemen-

tary School and will continue to do so. She said it’s wonderful to see the girls want to participate in this program that bolsters selfimage and fosters teamwork.

The triathlete’s next big adventure is a half IronMan in New Orleans in the spring. She’s excited to return to her childhood state to participate. She also hopes to run a race that will enable her to qualify for every serious runner’s holy grail — the Boston Marathon.

“I’m really close to getting All World Athlete status,” she said. “It means you’re in the top 5% probably in your age group. You get to wear a special swim cap, and you get to rack your bike in an advantageous place.”

She’s looking for a full IronMan to train for next fall, too.

“Once you’re there, it’s half mental,” Hey said. “It’s a mental game because you’re out there for 12-and-a-half hours. The decisions you make on race day — Am I going to stop at this water stop?

Am I going to push it on the bike?

Am I going to stay in the middle of this fray or go to the periphery where I’m going to get beat up less? — it will affect your race immensely.

“You have to stay tough,” she said. “You have to dig deep.”

While Hey is swimming, biking and running, her children are participating in the IronKids race, running one mile and earning an IronMan tattoo.

“Our 4-year-old still has his (tattoo) on his arm,” she said. “It really is a very inspiring event.

You see people doing it of all sizes and ages. It really is a family event.

That’s why they have the IronMan Support Crew T-shirts; it really is a group effort.”

Hey’s husband, Paul, sports one of those shirts.

“The only way I could do it was because I had an awesome support crew — my family,” she said.

“They say about the IronMan that if you can do an IronMan, you race for a day, but you can celebrate for a lifetime,” she said.

David Rosen, Windermere When Boba Fett entered the room, all the children stopped what they were doing. Many rushed over to him to take a picture or just be near him.

For the students at Sunset Park Elementary who attended Star Wars Night on Dec. 11, seeing Boba Fett was unbelievable. But for the man under the mask, it was a typical Friday night.

Windermere resident David Rosen, 31, is a member of the 501st Legion, a worldwide charitable organization. The group often appears at functions, such as schools and weddings, and makes hospital visits in its Star Wars garb as it represents the villains of the series. At events, the group doesn’t get paid, but the organization hosting it makes a gift to charity on its behalf.

On Friday night, Rosen was joined by Joe Gravelle, who played a Sand Trooper, and David Collins, who played a Magma Trooper.

What makes Star Wars so popular?

It’s completely unique. One of the main reasons a lot of people go, one of the really cool things — people tell me this; I don’t have kids yet — a lot of people remembering going to see the originals in the theaters, like my dad took me to see “Star Wars” when it came out in the 1970s.

And it’s now come around, those kids are now grown up and they have kids, and they’re taking their own children to see “Star Wars.” There’s no other film I can think of that has done that.

What is your most prized Star Wars possession?

Apart from my costume my friend got for me — we have our little cards that we all make for ourselves, and we hand them out to kids. One of my friends took one on Star Wars Weekend to Jeremy Bulloch, and he signed it.

He signed my Boba Fett card that has Jeremy Bulloch, Boba Fett.

And apparently, when she asked him what he thought of my costume, he said it was very flattering — he was very impressed.

Did Han Solo shoot first?

Well, yeah. I’ve seen the original, when he shot first, and then he (Greedo) shot second, and then I guess they both shot at the same time. I think it’s something like that.

Windermere resident Nick Bomleny’s love for “Star Wars” goes beyond a personal collection of memorabilia in his home.

As part of the 1980s tribute band SWITCH, he and his bandmates showed off their fandom by dressing in “Star Wars” costumes for their Halloween gig at Dexter’s of Windermere.

A fan since the original movie in 1977, Bomleny said he still has all the original toys. Since then, he has introduced his children to the galaxy far, far away.

be outside told Parker she would call the police, and Parker hustled to the one way the car could go to exit the area, he said. He missed the license plate number, but the car drove by again.

“The way they went, I could tell they were going to the back of our neighborhood, which there’s only one way to get out of, so I figured maybe I would be able to jump in my truck, get down there and get a license plate number,” he said.

“At that point, I went down to the town house complex here at Berkshire Park, and I called the cops.”

He saw the suspect car parked again, and that same man had run to two houses before getting back in the car, Parker said.

“It looked like they were following the FedEx Express truck, because it had just left that area,” he said. “They turned down the road and just really floored it, and I didn’t want to do 50 or 60 (mph) in a neighborhood area.”

Parker, still on the phone with law-enforcement officials, went to meet an officer at the original location.

“It just so happened that the people in the car had circled back around in the town house area,” he said. “They had again blasted through the neighborhood. I saw a cop at the entrance, and I told him the car had just turned onto the main street.”

Parker gave the officer a description, at which point officers took off after the suspects.

A porch-piracy crime spree ended in the arrest of four suspects charged with driving around and swiping packages from stoops in several neighborhoods in Windermere and Horizon West.

A slice of Orange County history seeks to begin its next chapter in the community.

PerriHouse Development seeks to change the future land use prepare the way for the future of the PerriHouse Bed and Breakfast.

Project leaders seek to take seven lots and combine them into about a 14-acre plot of land, according to PerriHouse President Dennis Abbate. This will allow the land to become the future home to a new 25-room country inn with a banquet hall, spa and dining room, with plans for multi-family residences in the back.

WHAT’S NEXT

The PerriHouse Bed and Breakfast Inn, located at 10417 Vista Oaks Court, has been a fixture in the community since 1989, but it is not currently operating because of noisy neighboring construction, which does not create a peaceful environment for guests, according to founder Angi Perretti.

The original house will be torn down and rebuilt, and Perretti is unsure if PerriHouse will accept guests again until the new building is complete.

The new plans will allow the business to stay true to its roots but expand to meet present-day business demands.

“When you read the little bit on our board or on our table about the historical value — we’re not going to be in the history books,” Abbate said at a Dec. 7 community meeting about the project.

As the business hoped to grow, it tried to find the best way to stay in the neighborhood and live alongside the incoming the Zen Luxury Living apartments by Unicorp National Developments.

Trying to come up with a solution, the business talked to neighbors and continued to do research, ultimately deciding the

best solution was to expand using the land bordering County Road 535, according to Abbate.

“The truth was, it just made a lot of sense for us to rearrange on the cul-de-sac,” Abbate said.

The project requires the future land-use map to change.

Many community members came out in support of the project, but expressed concern for the growing traffic they see along 535.

Lillian Szaksztylo, who lives in Cypress Chase, a community north of the proposed project, is one resident concerned about the increasing traffic she sees.

“The increase in the traffic — and the building — in the area is just mind-blowing,” she said.

Szaksztylo worries about kids along the heavy traffic area, though she is not opposed to the PerriHouse portion of the project.

he MetroWest WinterFest offered a winter celebration — Polar Express-themed.

The event, held Dec. 13 at MetroWest Golf Club, featured bubbles instead of snow, an ice-skating rink, performances by Piaget Academy and Perfect Pointe Productions, and a showing of the Polar Express.

The event was put on by the MetroWest Master Association, and all proceeds from the event benefited Edgewood Children’s Ranch.

Festival of lights shines on West Orange Gloria Green of The Jewish Pavilion has been visiting dozens of local senior facilities to share a celebration of Hanukkah, which began Dec. 6 and ended Monday evening.

These services bring Jewish Hanukkah traditions and music into these facilities where residents enjoy the traditional latkes (potato pancakes) and other holiday treats.

The latkes are in remembrance of the lamp oil that miraculously remained lit for eight days at the rededication of the sacred Temple in Jerusalem following its destruction in 168 BCE. eribeth Jackson and Imelda Jimenez, from Betty J’s Florist in Ocoee, gave a demonstration for the Windermere Garden Club last month about holiday floral arrangements. Jimenez is the shop’s main designer for event orders and showed the women of the club how to create beautiful pieces for Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Jimenez came to the United States from Mexico when she was a teenager. After high school, she got a job at a flower shop in California, where she started learning the basic principles of design.

Within a year, the shop had put her in charge of orders for funerals and weddings.

“I always liked art,” Jimenez said. “I like playing with color.”

Jimenez and her husband later moved to Ocoee, and she has worked at Betty J’s for nine years.

“We say she designs from the heart. In every way, she does,” Jackson said about Jimenez.

“Everything comes out beautiful.”

Prepare the container with plastic floral lining, water and a block of floral foam. Place two candles in the center of the foam. You can use floral candle holders or shave the bottom of the candles to a point with a knife.

n Mount your camera on a tripod and manually focus on the lights — use liveview if possible to ensure focus is sharp. n Use manual mode, aperture f5.6, ISO 600-800, lens as wide as possible to capture the whole scene. Shutter speeds will vary as the daylight falls but start around 1/15sec. FROM THE WINTER GARDEN HERITAGE FOUNDATION THROWBACK THURSDAY DEC. 5, 1941 Florida citrus was always a special treat, especially for family and friends living in colder climes.

An advertisement in the Dec. 5, 1941, issue of West Orange News suggested folks buy local fruit to give as a holiday gift. That year, there were about 45,000 acres of citrus in all of Orange County and dozens of growers in West Orange County.

John Pawlack Jr. was born April 27, 1930, in Pennsylvania to John and Victoria Pawlack.

John is survived by his wife of 45 years, Cavelle Pawlack; his daughter, Cammie Evans; his son, Jeffre Pawlack; his grandchildren, Bradley Evans, Zachary Evans, Hayden Evans, Celine Pawlack and William Pawlack; and his sister, Jean Keil.

As an engineer, John traveled the United States building bridges, missile silos and Disney hotels. He excelled at fabricating miscellaneous steel structures while president of Lite Steel Fabricators.

In his later years, he and his wife welcomed guests at their bed and breakfast at Meadow

Evelyn T. Riddle, age 94, born in Forked Deer, Tennessee, passed away on Monday Nov. 23, 2015.

She was born of Robert William and Katie May Turner and is survived by one brother, Gene Turner; along with many nieces and nephews. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will miss her dearly: Gillian Violette, Grant Doshna, Gregg Doshna, Hayden Violette, Laina Violette and Lukas Violette.

During her life, she enjoyed gardening and attending church Bible study, in addition to spending time with family and friends. She goes to heaven to meet her beloved husband and daughter, Herman Riddle and Zane Doshna.

A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, at the First United Methodist Church of Winter Garden, 125 N. Lakeview Ave, Winter Garden, Florida 34787; before being interred at Polk Memorial Cemetery in Columbia, Tennessee, beside her husband, Herman Riddle, at a time to be determined.

John T. Langford, born Oct. 13, 1947, in Dunedin, Florida, joined the Lord Dec. 1, 2015, in Winter Garden, Florida.

He graduated in 1965 from Largo High School and in 1969 from Florida State University.

He joined the U.S. Air Force as an officer in 1969 and served until 1975. While in the Air Force, he was awarded two Distinguished Flying Crosses for exemplary skill and outstanding airmanship. The latter was awarded for his participation as navigator on Operation Baby Lift.

John married Cindy Lue in March 1975.

He was preceded in death by his father, Quincy Thomas Langford; and a sister, Jennifer Ann Langford.

Survivors are his mother, Mattie Lou Langford; sister, Sandra Hester; wife of 40 years, Cindy Langford; sons, John Quincy Langford, Zachary Thomas Langford; daughters-in-law, Tiffany Langford and Lauren Langford; and grandchildren,

Ethan Langford, Caleb Langford, Brayden Langford and Scarlett Ann Langford.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 5, at West Orlando Baptist Church, Ocoee. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Vitas Hospice, 2201 Lucien Way, Suite 100, Maitland, Florida 32751.

Thanks to the network of basketball coaches in this country, Windermere Preparatory School has a new girls basketball head coach with impressive credentials.

“Moving to Florida from Kentucky, it was not on my radar by any means,” coach Rebecca Dyer said. “I was informed of the position from a friend of mine, who is currently the head coach at Hargreaves Military Academy in Virginia. … It was about a week turnaround from hearing about the position to taking the position, and it’s really hard to turn down Florida when your average temperature is 75 degrees and sunny.”

Dyer called this a huge opportunity for her and her family, but for the program she inherits — which has struggled to get off the ground — it means a great deal more to have her next-level experience to draw from. As a player, she reached the Elite Eight with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and then did the same at the University of Kentucky.

The Olympia girls basketball team defeated University High Dec. 14, 60-30, to improve to 8-4 on the year.

Taylor Hair led the way with 15 points and five rebounds.

The Titans have now won three consecutive contests and five of their past seven heading into a matchup Dec. 17 against Apopka.

hen Jerred Treacy is on the court, he often will make eye contact with his brother, Dante.

From that simple look, Jerred knows what move Dante wants him to make so he can get the ball to him.

It’s nothing telepathic or supernatural, though.

“We just know each other well,” said Jerred.

As they should.

Jerred, a senior at Central Florida Christian Academy,

and Dante, a sophomore, are basketball teammates and brothers.

The siblings started playing basketball together in early elementary school in the FBVA league. They continued to play together through middle school, and then Jerred attended Cypress Creek High School, where he played basketball for two years.

For the 2014-15 school year, Jerred transferred to Central Florida Christian Academy, where Dante enrolled. There, they have played a strong role in the team’s growth.

Dyer set a Scott County High School record of 2,907 career points and led that team to top-25 USA TODAY rankings twice. But before that, in her sophomore year, she had verbally accepted a scholarship offer to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

She arrived there after achieving accolades such as 2007 Kentucky Miss Basketball, Gatorade Player of the Year and State Farm Female Athlete of the Year.

By making three-pointers and free throws at the best rate on her team in her first year, she helped the Tar Heels win the ACC Tournament and reach the Elite Eight after finishing first in the regular season. Then she transferred to the University of Kentucky, where she contributed to another Elite Eight appearance.

Shae Vevera Shae Vevera is a senior who has played forward for the girls soccer team at Dr. Phillips throughout her high-school career. During a Dec. 8 game at Jones, she scored a hat trick, leading her team to an 8-0 victory — the team’s sixth straight shutout. Other games in that winning streak have seen Vevera score another hat trick (against Ocoee on Dec. 1) and a pair of goals against East Ridge on Nov. 19 and also, most recently, on Dec. 10 against Wekiva.

Tell me about the experience of getting a hat trick against Jones.

I just like to score as many (goals) as I can. When I get the opportunity, I just go for it.

How regularly do you score hat tricks?

I tend to get a lot — I don’t try to be cocky about it, but I mean when I get the chance to score a lot, I do and take my chances. Last year I got a lot.

It was like my highest scoring season. I try to do better each year.

What do you enjoy about playing soccer for Dr. Phillips?

I’ve met a lot of girls, and I’ve stayed playing with the same girls throughout my whole soccer career. I (like) to play for them and play for my school and play for the name Dr. Phillips, and it’s an honor.

When did you start playing soccer?

I was 6 or 7.

The 2014-15 season was the first season at CFCA for both the Treacys and McClintock.

In that season, CFCA went 23-7 and made it to the regional semifinals, a remarkable turnaround for a team with a 1-24 record the season before.

This year, the team has a 3-4 record and is looking forward to district play again, though this year’s district is more challenging than the previous.

CFCA’s district includes Orlando Christian Prep, Agape Christian Academy — last year’s state runner up — International Community School and Geneva.

Last year, the team was able to prove themselves, Jerred said.

What’s your favorite thing about playing soccer?

My mindset during the game.

I can just forget about everything and that’s all that’s on my mind.

What do you like about playing forward?

Scoring.

What are you looking forward to the rest of the season with the team?

Just working toward my goal and going to districts — winning districts — with my team. Going to states with my team. Trying to get as far as we can.

What are your personal goals for the season?

I try to beat every year how many (goals) I got before. But I also try to get more assists every year.

What’s next for you as a senior?

I haven’t really put myself out there for soccer, but if I have the opportunity to, I would take it.

against tougher opponents and said he will always take a tougher opponent over an easier one.

His love for competition stems back to the Treacys’ childhood, where competition was commonplace.

“Growing up playing in the backyard, we would compete really hard to the point where we’d start fighting,” Dante said.

“Our dad, he’s always been there to push us and let us grow.”

Dante and Jerred are still competitive with each other, whether it’s wrestling at home, racing to see who can brush their teeth first or playing basketball together.

“The basketball court brings out the best in us,” Dante said.

During their short time at CFCA, the Treacys’ high expectations for themselves have also helped to bolster the expectations that other athletes have of the basketball program.

“They’ve contributed more to CFCA than just basketball,” McClintock said. “They’ve

become excellent student athletes and fit in wonderfully in terms of the culture — contributed positively to the culture that we want at our school.”

As the season progresses, the Treacys hope to grow more into their role as leaders at school and on the team. They also want to enjoy the rest of their season together, as it is likely to be the last time they play together at a competitive level.

Jerred wants to attend EmbryRiddle Aeronautical University with hopes of joining the Air Force.

If he has the chance to play basketball, he will, but his interest in planes is even stronger.

“It’s sad just seeing him go,” Dante said. “But the years we had together, it’s been fun. (We) still (have) the rest of this season, too.”

“We’ll just try to make the most out of it,” Jerred said.

“And for me, that was intriguing, because I could come in and make an immediate impact, changing the culture that did not exactly exist just yet. So coming in, I knew I could make it my own and see if we could lay the foundation brick-by-brick to grow for the future.”

And that is what Dyer tells her team every day: Lay the foundation brick by brick.

This is one of her principles, which include effort, the team’s greater good and the best players playing — even if that means starting her seventh-graders.

“We can’t come in and expect immediate change,” she said.

“It’s a daily grind, and they have really bought all-in into that concept, and they’ve worked so hard each day with the intricate details that I’m asking them to do. The overall basketball IQ that needed to be learned this year, it’s hard. But they’ve absolutely been so good in that aspect of being coachable and

No, I used to (play on Florida Rush). But I stopped years ago — I stopped freshman year I think it was. High school was like my main thing, so then I just tried to work off of that.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I love going to the beach, and I love animals.

What makes you want to become a nurse?

I love being around people and knowing that I can help them.

If you could do one thing over winter break, what would you do and why?

I would go to Utah to ski.

“She’s an outstanding athlete for us, and we’re fortunate

to have her,” Dyer said of Rowswell. “But moving forward, we’re young, and I’m excited to see where we can go.”

That entails a plan of three to five years, but with the December portion of their schedule complete, the Lakers have a winning record at 5-4, which is a relative success Dyer said her team comprehends.

“That’s why we’re working hard on a daily basis,” she said. “We’ll see where we are at the end of the year, and maybe we’ll be competing for a district title.”

Five effective ways to keep weight off

I know how it feels to go into the new year feeling puffy, tired and depressed because the scale showed I gained five pounds — or more. However, with just a few adjustments to my holiday game plan, the last three years have been completely different.

It is possible to go into the new year feeling healthy.

These are tried-and-true tips that have been successfully implemented by me as well as many of my clients.

1. Start with protein. So you’re scoping out the buffet setup at a holiday party, and you’re contemplating what to eat. I’m betting there’s a turkey there. Or a ham. Or some shrimp cocktail. Start with the protein first.

2. Add veggies. Find the vegetables that are prepared healthy, such as a veggie platter of raw vegetables, salad (but skip the croutons and bacon bits and use a little olive oil and vinegar for dressing), roasted/ baked vegetables, green beans and Brussels sprouts, and fill up the remainder of your plate with the veggies. The combination of protein and vegetables will leave you feeling satiated.

3. Bring your own healthy dish. Many times, the parties you attend throughout the holidays are potluck style. This is a great opportunity for you to contribute something healthy to the table. Bring whatever your weakness is. If it is dessert, prepare a healthy dessert. If it is the side dish, prepare your favorite vegetable cooked in a healthy way.

4. Don’t go hungry. Instead of showing up with your stomach growling and mouth salivating, take action to ensure you arrive

in the exact opposite position.

How? Easy. Have something healthy before you arrive. Have a protein shake before you go or snack such as almonds and apples. It is easier to say “no” when we keep hunger and cravings at bay.

5. Do not drink calories.

Calories in beverages are wasted calories. They do nothing to increase satiety or fullness. If it has calories, don’t drink it — plain and simple. If you’d like some variety beyond plain water, add fruit to your water, have unsweet tea or seltzer water with a slice of lemon. As soon as you arrive, before you do anything else, pour yourself a big glass of water, drink it down and wait 15 minutes before eating anything.

Let this be the year that’s different from all the others; the year where you actually begin healthier and fitter than all the previous years combined.

IronDAD: Avoid the holiday gut It’s no secret that the holidays are the worst time of year for healthy eating.

It is so hard to go to family functions and not eat at least one piece of Grandma’s special pie or your sister’s famous marshmallow surprise that she only makes one time a year.

Just like the Real IronDAD blog, the holidays are about food, family, and fun. There is a way to have all three without getting completely off track with your health.

There’s another reason not to go crazy at holiday parties.

It’s no coincidence that the holidays are the sickest time of year. It’s not just the cold weather that gets us sneezing.

It makes perfect sense — we gorge ourselves in the name of jolly feelings that abound throughout the last few months of the year, starting off with the biggest junk food day, Halloween. We eat a ton of candy and send our immune systems into a tailspin as we continue to go to parties, eat too many desserts and drink alcohol without being responsible for controlling our intake. Working out?

Forget that! We are too busy with holiday functions and shopping.

By the time we get to January, we are so out of control that we make a New Year’s resolution to be healthier, which on average lasts about two weeks.

tournament where, as a junior, he went 3-2 and nearly placed.

It’s a far cry from his sophomore year, when Glemaud wrestled at the junior varsity level and largely underachieved. Going into his junior year, Glemaud wasn’t expected to make that leap to varsity yet.

When the wrestler Miller had pegged as the Panthers’ heavyweight (Colby Meeks) graduated early to enroll for the spring at the college where he would play football, Glemaud was thrust into varsity wrestling.

“Tahj had to step up — to step into our lineup and be a varsity wrestler,” Miller said. “He had to work on some things that, as a big guy, he wasn’t used to.”

Glemaud’s first season at varsity was one defined by gradual improvement. Early in the season, Miller said Glemaud was consistently wrestling in close matches as he continued to learn the craft. Glemaud lost several matches in overtime and doubleovertime. He developed a rival in West Orange’s Ish Hollis, a senior at the time.

Hollis was one of the region’s top heavyweights and, because of district and Metro Conference alignments, the two grapplers met several times. Hollis won each of those meetings — until the last one.

“He pushed me to my limit, and

one time, I stood up and I won,” Glemaud said.

From that victory, Glemaud was on a roll and advanced to the state tournament. Over the course of the season, he’d become a different wrestler.

“He walked into the state tournament like he’d been there forever,” Miller recalled.

In the off-season, Glemaud wrestled at the club level for Orange County Wrestling. He worked out and bulked up to 278 pounds before leaning back down to 262. Last summer, he won gold at the AAU Scholastic Duals at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

So far in his senior year this winter, Glemaud has won every match. It’s almost hard to believe Glemaud, who says, “Nothing is possible is without God,” has evolved into such a fierce competitor on the mat when, off it, he is generally seen as a friendly and polite young man.

“He’s like a little teddy bear; off the mat, he’s the nicest kid you want to be around,” Miller said. “(On the mat) he just turns into something else.”

Glemaud and the Dr. Phillips wrestling team will be in action this weekend at a tournament at Lyman High School in Longwood.
