Town mulls options

TWO OPTIONS

During this latest workshop, ADG presented renderings of two options, which can be customized later.

Option 1,known as the H-shaped option, totals 11,477 square feet and is estimated to cost $5.126 million. Option 2, referred to as the T-shaped option, includes 11,245 square feet and would cost about $5.206 million.

Both options would connect the police department and town administration offices in a onestory building featuring colonial architecture and house the public works department in a separate one-story building spanning 2,554 square feet.

But one largely noticeable difference between the two options is the inclusion of a modern lobby in Option 1 that measures 1,175 square feet and connects the town’s police department and administration offices.

Now, the town must decide on whether to move forward with Option 1 or Option 2; the costs differ by about $80,000.

Because of limits imposed by the town charter pertaining to how much money the town can borrow for projects, the next step lies in the hands of Windermere residents.

Town residents will be asked to vote on a referendum in March on whether to allow the town to borrow the required money to fund the next phases of the project.

“If they say no, then we just can’t,” Windermere Town Manager Robert Smith said. “But I don’t think people really understand the need until they set foot in this building or the police department. They just see the cost and the reports, but until they come here, they might not understand the desperate need for it. It’s hot; it’s cramped; I mean, it’s an old

schoolhouse. It was never meant to be a government facility.”

Last time, a referendum to increase the town’s borrowing limits failed by 40 votes, Smith said. But he suspects that might have been because residents did not know exactly for what they

were voting.

“I think people felt like they were just writing a blank check to the town,” he said. “Now that we have all the concept designs and the layouts for people to see, hopefully, it will appease those who voted no last time. But if they

say no again, I don’t know, I guess we’ll have to go back to the drawing board to see what else we can do.”

If the referendum is approved in March, Smith estimates the town’s new facilities could be completed in about three to four years.

struct new buildings for the police, public works and town administration departments focused on determining whether the 1887 schoolhouse currently serving as the town’s government facilities were adequate.

The study’s results determined it wasn’t — not even close.

So the council hired Winter Park-based Architects Design Group to assist with decisions for the site location and concept designs. The council ultimately decided the new facilities would be constructed at their current downtown location.

Windermere Police Chief Dave Ogden, who has pushed for years to upgrade the police department to meet accreditation standards, said he is pleased the town is moving forward with the initiative.

“We’ve been working with the consultants for the past few months and I really like what they’ve presented,” Ogden said.

“For me, I’ve always been concerned about having a hardened police department that meets professional standards and accreditation measures. So truthfully, to me, it doesn’t matter what it looks like, but I love what they’ve put together. It really fits the charm of what we have right now.”

“We heard the concerns from the residents, and we wanted to compromise to be a good neighbor,” Hughes said. “So we reduced our request to 92 lots, and we changed our request to stay with the Estate Home District. ... Since that time, we came back and actually reduced our density down again to 81 units, which gives you a 3.2 (unit per acre) density.”

Comparably, this density is lower than the existing density of the surrounding Lakes of Windermere and Windermere Terrace neighborhoods, Hughes said. The Lakes of Windermere neighborhood is 4.52 units per acre, and Windermere Terrace has 4.44 units per acre, she said.

“Additionally, (because) we are staying with the estate home district, our lot sizes are also changed and are compatible with the Lakes of Windermere and Windermere Terrace,” Hughes said. “We also have additional stormwater for the area and a little bit more open

space. So we feel like this is a great compromise compared to where we started in this process almost a year ago.”

Orange County Planner Steven Thorp explained that if the applicant remains with the Estate Home District, it is allowed up to three units per acre, which would equal a total of 76 units. However, VHB Inc. is planning to use development credits to get up to five extra units.

With the original 113-home request, VHB Inc. was trying to use development credits from a different, external project, he said.

NEIGHBORHOOD ACCESS

Despite the lower density, several issues of concern remain for area residents, primarily the proposed access to the proposed development.

The 49-acre property is bordered by protected wetland to the west and north, the Lakes of Windermere neighborhood to the east, and a private dirt road to the south. Because of this, access to the development would need to be through the Lakes of Windermere neighborhood.

This presents a problem for Lakes of Windermere residents, who emphasized their roads already are crowded because of lack of driveway space.

“If you drive through our neighborhood, you would see that just the existing density does not work,” said Jon Johnston, president of the Lakes of Windermere Homeowners Association.

“There will be, eventually, an issue where a fire truck cannot get down the street. It’s going to happen because our driveway is not deep enough for cars, so there are cars on the street.”

Johnston added that the expected increase in traffic congestion might ultimately result in even more dangerous conditions for all the children who walk to school.

“You guys need to come out there at 7 or 10 at night, and 7 in the morning, to see what the traffic looks like,” Johnston said.

“We’ve got kids going to school, and the kids cannot stay on the sidewalk, so they’re going in between the cars and stepping out onto the road. It’s just a disaster waiting to happen.”

Lakes of Windermere residents also voiced concerns regarding future amenities for the project.

It’s anticipated some of the future neighbors may be tempted to use their neighborhood’s amenities — despite not paying HOA fees — if the amenities in the proposed development are smaller or inadequate.

“This is a great improvement, and we appreciate you trying to be good neighbors … but our concern is we can’t fence off our amenities,” Johnston said. “We pay for a lot for the upkeep and maintenance of our amenities, and we’re constantly having to chase someone off the property.”

Amenities will be included because they are required, Thorp said. But when asked for specifics, residents were told details had not yet been worked out, because the project is still in its preliminary phases.

CONSTRUCTION TRAFFIC

Some residents also asked if it would be possible to use the private road to the south of the property for construction traffic. However, Duke Energy would need to grant permission for use of the road, which is an unlikely scenario, Thorp said.

“It would be preferable, if possible, to have the construction traffic just go through this easement instead of going through the public roads,” he said. “But that’s going to be very difficult, because power lines run through this access dirt road and Duke does not allow anything under transmission lines unless you’re crossing. You can’t go parallel.”

The revised request will go to the Orange County P&Z commission for a public hearing Jan. 17. That board’s recommendation will then go to the Orange County Board of Commissioners sometime in March, Thorp said.

orizon West residents expressed unease with a proposed residential development during a community meeting held Monday, Dec. 10, at Sunset Park Elementary School.

The proposed development, known as the Monk Property, would be located on 49.6 acres of land west of Duncaster Street, north of Overstreet Road and south of Little Lake Sawyer.

Presently, the project applicant — represented by Erika Hughes, of VHB Inc. — is requesting to build 81 homes with a minimum of 50-foot lots at a density of 3.19 units per acre.

This is a reduction from the applicant’s previous request to build 113 homes — a request which was recommended for denial by the Orange County Planning & Zoning Commission during its Sept. 20 meeting.

The applicant reduced the number of homes as a compromise, Hughes said to attendees at the Dec. 10 meeting.

S

ix months into Gary Bruhn’s first term as mayor in 2004, the town of Windermere nearly fell apart on him — literally.

The town was hit back-to-backto-back by hurricanes Charley, Frances and Jeanne. The three storms hit in a span of six weeks, and each time, the town lost power for a week.

A rookie mayor at the time, Bruhn worked 14- to 16-hour days with staff to keep the town running and repair damage.

The following year, 2005, was no easier, because he had to contend with the challenge of constructing the roundabouts. Diverting all the traffic to the residential dirt roads made for unhappy and frustrated residents, but it had to be done.

In 2009, what he calls the “Tiger Woods debacle” plowed into town, bringing a negative national spotlight on the town. And in 2011 — what he terms as one of the “darkest times for the town” — Windermere police officer Robert “Robbie” German was fatally shot on duty. He says it is the day the town’s heart was broken.

Shortly after that, the town was hit with an incident involving highlevel corruption in its own police department. Some were calling for the department to be disbanded and allow the Orange County Sheriff’s Office to take over. But Bruhn refused and instead worked on hiring the right individual willing to take on the challenge of fixing the department.

So it should be noted that his welcome into the role of Windermere mayor, and the following years, were mired by both typical and unique challenges. Still, it was never enough to chase him away.

But now, after a 15-year run, Bruhn, 66, is stepping down, citing the decision to sell the home in which he has lived for the last 30 years.

He has purchased a larger home in the Reserve at Belmere that will be more accommodating for family visits, particularly his grandchildren, with whom he hopes to spend more time, he said.

However, because his new home is outside town limits, once his home sells, he no longer will be able to serve as mayor. Town charter rules require town residency for elected officials.

“We thought the time was right,” Bruhn said the evening he announced his pending resignation Monday, Dec. 3. “I’m not getting any younger, so we figured it was time to find what will hopefully be the last home of our lives. And I’m excited to move into my new home, but my heart will always be here. I mean, I’ve lived here almost half my life. And I’ve been mayor for half of that, but it was just that time.”

STAY ACTIVE

Bruhn, who was born in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, moved many times with his family because of his dad’s employment with the U.S. Army. He spent a few years in Germany and bounced around several states, until his family finally settled in Wisconsin.

There, he went to college, joined the Army himself and served six years in the U.S. National Guard.

He eventually made his way to Georgia, where he met his wife, and later moved to Windermere, where he spent 30 years working for Lockheed Martin.

Then in 2004, he tried his hand at politics. He was never the type to run for class president, but the town was dangerously divided at the time, and he felt he had to do something.

“I wasn’t happy with what was going on,” he said. “We had some very controversial elections. There had been some real dissension with annexations as it related to The Manors, going as far as lawsuits being filed. It was just a very contentious and divided town.

“And we had a developer come in who bought the Windermere Union Church and was planning to buy up the rest of the parcels downtown and build this huge commercial development. But there were a lot of people who didn’t want Windermere to become a commercial destination. And the developer would tell us how crazy we were, and, well, I came in right in the heels of that.”

He describes Windermere’s political situation at the time as chaotic. He recalled how a council member resigned the day he took office and a town attorney resigned the evening he was sworn in.

But instead of being discouraged, Bruhn helped where he could to set things right by staying active and involved despite the myriad challenges — which is exactly what

It was that same activism and commitment to stay involved, regardless of the lack of a paycheck, that made Windermere Town Manager Robert Smith admire Bruhn — a mayor Smith believes is unlike many others.

“There aren’t many like him,” Smith said. “A lot of times, the mayor is just a ceremonial position, and the person who fills it doesn’t take such an active role as he does. His heart was always with the town of Windermere, and not only the town of Windermere, but other cities’ rights as it related to Home Rule. And he fought for that for quite some time. And he’s sat on every board and committee I can think of. The amount of hours that he volunteered — and at zero cost to the town, I might add — is just extraordinary. You don’t see that kind of passion or volunteerism from many.”

Bruhn, who plans to resign no later than March 2019, hopes Windermere residents will remember the difference they can make, too.

“I just hope I’ve instilled in at least a few of you the knowledge that you can make a difference,” he said. “You have the ability — between your volunteerism, and your activism and engagement — you have the ability to make a difference in this town.”

Those who have been involved with Windermere High from the start know that there’s more to building a new high school than just putting up the walls.

It’s also about creating community and leaving a legacy.

For the parents and volunteers on the board of the Wolverine Legacy Fund, it’s also important to foster support for the school’s curriculum, students and teachers.

The Legacy Fund awards monetary grants that help finance everything from student scholarships to enhancement of existing programs and departments.

The $3,000 grant will support the math department. “(The Larabees) had asked if part of the proceeds could go toward a program at the school, but more particularly to a teacher who is dedicated and goes above and beyond teaching the students,” said Jane Dunkelberger, president of the Legacy Fund’s executive board. “The board was excited, and we were elated to have our first diamond sponsor of the year, so we took it to the administration, and Mr. Guthrie met with his assistant principals. They all decided unanimously that the teacher who went above and beyond — and the department that needed it the most — would be the math department, and Mrs. Church the recipient.”

Becoming a diamond sponsor requires a minimum $5,000 donation and includes customized promotional opportunities around the school, such as a banner at the sports fields and a special tile array in the business/sponsor garden on campus.

“It’s really a win-win for everybody,” said Irene Pini, the fund’s vice president of sponsorship.

“The overall purpose is to build a community school, and we want to involve the businesses and families in it. Anyone who wants to be

involved in this capacity with the Legacy Fund, we will find a way. No matter what their passion is we can find a way to support it through the fund and the school.”

Pini also said although the community has a new school with state-of-the-art technology, there still are things within the school that haven’t been built.

“Programs at older, established schools have been around forever,” Pini said. “Things that we’re working to build here; they don’t just happen. We’re starting it, and it’s a lot to start. We still have to build our programs within the school.

That takes time, and it doesn’t just happen because you open the doors to a new school.”

Dunkelberger said this opportunity allows students and families to leave a legacy behind at their school.

I think it’s a nice, touching legacy to leave behind with the brick. They can come back one day, and their child may be here, and they can show their kids and grandkids.”

So far, the Legacy Fund has gathered about 20 sponsors of all dif-

ferent levels. There still is more work to be done, but the board’s dedication has the school community on its way toward establishing traditions and legacies.

“It builds community, and it helps us by giving back more to the school and continuing to volunteer,” Dunkelberger said. “We know there’s so much support out there, and in all our schools, but in this school particularly, we have a lot of bright, young students that are full of talent — not only academically but athletically.”

“There’s still a lot to be done,” Pini said. “Now is not the time to take a step back. Now is really the time, with this new school, to step forward along with our business partners and volunteers.”

As children growing up in Rochester, New York, Steve and Jennifer Pelcher’s version of going out for ice cream was heading to the local Abbott’s Frozen Custard shop.

Having lived in Horizon West now for six years, the Rochester natives couldn’t help but notice that they missed the smaller, mom-and-pop ice-cream stores they experienced as children.

But they also missed the famous Abbott’s frozen custard.

“When you went out for ice cream (in Rochester), you went out for Abbott’s,” Jennifer Pelcher said. “It’s one of the first things I do when I go back home. ... We felt the community was growing so quickly and there’s so many families and kids that we need something like this.”

N o w, the Pelchers’ 1,500-square-foot Abbott’s Frozen Custard shop is set to open in Hamlin in May 2019. The shop will have outdoor seating and feature anywhere from five to seven flavors of frozen custard at a time, depending on the season. “(Abbott’s) is a creamy, rich custard,” Steve Pelcher said. “The good thing about our custard is it’s very consistent and quite organic (in some ways). The cows that they make the milk from for the custard base are free-range cows that are fed special diets.”

All the ingredients in Abbott’s custard are made in upstate New York and shipped to franchisees.

rowing up, Brett Waldon avoided watching “A Christmas Story” like the plague, but the classic Christmas film always was a holiday staple for Laura Mansoori throughout her life.

“I avoided it completely,” Waldon said. “I had heard about it enough. I knew enough of the tropes. I knew it was about a kid who wanted a BB gun, and I had just made up my mind that that just wasn’t interesting. … I just never, ever watched it.”

(We always) watched ‘A Christmas Story’ during the holidays. … For me, it’s part of Christmas.”

Today, the two are cast as lead roles in the Garden Theatre’s production of the film. Mansoori is cast as the mother in the play, and Waldon narrates the tale as older Ralph. Showtimes of “A Christmas Story” are at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays through Dec. 23. Additionally, matinees are held at 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, and a Thursday matinee will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 13.

Although Waldon never saw the film growing up, he finally took the time to watch it with his wife a year ago. It was then that his lifelong perception of the movie changed.

“I watched it and immediately I was like, ‘Why has nobody told me about this movie?’” he said with a laugh. “I was just so mad that nobody forced me to watch this movie, because I immediately (thought), ‘This is great! I love everything about this!’ … Within the course of about a month and a half, we were all of a sudden just inundated with ‘A Christmas Story.’”

Mansoori said that because “A Christmas Story” is such a wellknown classic, audiences have been able to anticipate scenes before they happen, but that anticipation only adds to the experience and even enhances it.

“You can hear the nostalgia (in the audience),” Mansoori said.

“You can hear the people anticipating the moments that are about to happen on stage, because they remember it (from the film) …

It’s been kind of cool to do a show that’s so nostalgic in that sense.”

“They know what’s going to happen, and yet, when it does happen, it’s still like they’re seeing it for the first time,” Waldon said, adding that because of his narrating role, he gets to interact and anticipate scenes with the audience. “It (offers) more connection, I think, because for so much of theater, you have that fourth wall

up and you’re not really interacting with the audience. … To be able to break that fourth wall directly as a narrator … it’s really fun. It’s a very communal experience.”

The biggest challenge of the production for Mansoori has been the scene where the iconic leg lamp is broken. She considers the scene a challenge because her character has to stay angry, but she also has to stop herself from laughing, she said.

“It’s so hard to stay angry as my character,” Mansoori said. “I joke all the time that that moment is my Everest, but it really is. I really have to dig in and stay grounded

and remember my truth as an actor in that moment to get through it.”

Waldon said his greatest challenge has been the scope of the play as a whole. As the narrator of the story, Waldon was required to memorize many lines.

“I probably have about an hour’s worth of talking,” Waldon said. “It’s a lot (of lines). … Every night, before I come on, I just have to remind myself (to) stay in the moment, listen to what’s happening (and) don’t think ahead, because it’s so involved. That’s been the biggest challenge for me is just staying in that moment.”

CHERI LEE DOSS DIED MONDAY, DEC. 3, 2018.

Cheri Lee Doss, 71, of Ocoee, Florida, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2018. She was born April 13, 1947, in Cheverly, Maryland.

Cheri was a dancer and performer under Edith Royal in her younger years, worked as a florist and retired after many years as a popular people greeter at Ocoee Walmart.

WILLIAM SIDNEY “BILL” ARRINGTON III DIED SATURDAY, DEC. 1, 2018.

William Sidney “Bill” Arrington III, 75, of Winter Haven, Florida, died on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018.

Bill, son of the late William Sidney Arrington Jr. and Mildred H. Arrington, was born on Dec. 12, 1942, in Orlando, Florida.

He attended FSU and graduated from Florida Southern College. He served two years in the U.S. Navy and traveled the Mediterranean on the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La. His career was in citrus management.

She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Shannon Doss-Kaleshefski.

Cheri is survived by husband, Joel Doss; daughter, Cherice Doss-Gertsman; siblings, Chris Reisinger and Jo Ann Barbree; grandchildren, Tory, Kiarnan, Arwen, Cadence, Paige and Phoenix; and great-grandson, Luke.

A Celebration of Life is at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, at Woodlawn Funeral Home, in Gotha, Florida.

SUZANNE GORKE DIED SUNDAY, OCT. 14, 2018.

On Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018, Suzanne Gorke, loving mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, passed away peacefully at home, in Oakland, Florida, at the age of 82.

Suzanne was born in Marshfield, Wisconsin, on Jan. 10, 1936, of parents Clifford and Zona Garten. She grew up in Marshfield and married Vernon Parker, with whom she had two children. Later divorced, she married Wilfred Gorke in 1965, with whom she had one child.

As a young girl, she was a member of Job’s Daughters and several organizations.

Suzanne moved several times with her husband and spent time in Hudson, Wisconsin,

where she had her firstborn.

She eventually moved back to Marshfield and met her second husband, Wilfred, who was offered the job as postmaster in Minocqua, Wisconsin, where they relocated.

Suzanne began as a medical transcriptionist, at Howard Young Medical Center in Minocqua, before becoming secretary to the administrator and the director of nursing, until her husband Wilfred retired. Ready for some

Brooke Ann Robinson, 39, of Groveland, Florida, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2018.

She was born in Orlando, Florida, on Feb. 13, 1979, to Linda (Steadward) and James W. Robinson Jr. Brooke was named after baseball player Brooks Robinson and grew up playing softball under her dad’s coaching. As an adult, she found professional success in sales and hospitality.

Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Wilfred.

She is survived by her three children, Steve, David and Kara; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful human being and will be greatly missed.

She will be laid to rest next to her husband in Marshfield, Wisconsin, at a later date.

Olympia alum caps college career with national title Caroline Jeffers, an Olympia alum and Windermere native, capped off her final year at FSU with a national title in women’s soccer.

The opponent across the field from her is a familiar one. About a month before, Jeffers and the Seminoles faced off against UNC in the ACC women’s soccer finals on the same field.

But this day is different. This time, it is for all the marbles. This is for the Division I national title at the Women’s College World Cup in Cary, North Carolina.

Although the game that Sunday, Dec. 2, wouldn’t be as highscoring as the 3-2 win over the Tar Heels back in November, the lone goal from Dallas Dorosy and the shutout by Jeffers would be enough to seal up a national title

for the ‘Noles in front of 12,512 fans — most of whom wore the light blue of Carolina.

“It was very surreal, honestly,” said Jeffers, a Windermere native and Olympia alum. “Four years ago, I could have never imagined myself playing in a national title game. It was crazy, because it was in North Carolina’s backyard, so it SEE JEFFERS PAGE 12

Andrew Lizyness One could say Olympia High boys soccer standout Andrew Lizyness is a natural at the sport, and for good reason. The senior is the lead scorer for the Titans so far this season, a team captain and a University of Central Florida commit. He also plays for Orlando-based club team ACYS Spirit United and hopes to play pro soccer someday.

How long have you been playing soccer?

I’ve been playing soccer since I was about 4 years old. …

It was just a small recreation league, and I thought it would be fun to play, and I fell in love, I guess.

Why did you decide to play for UCF? I decided to commit to UCF, because I really thought that it would be a good place for me.

It’s close to home, and I really value my family a lot. I love the way they play — I think they play a lot of possession and a lot of attacking soccer, which works for my style of play. So I think it’s a really good fit for me.

They’re definitely one of our biggest rivals. I think it was a really good game for us, because it really showed what we’re capable of.

Tell us about the team as a whole this season.

We’re doing really well. We went through a bit of a tough time at the beginning of the season, with tying and losing our first two games. But I think we’ve really worked through that and we’ve gained a few new players (who) have really helped us a lot. I think we’re just starting to gel as a team, and we’ve got a lot of good things going for us at the moment.

How has it been transitioning to a leadership role for your team?

My dad really stresses being a leader a lot in our family, and so I think this helps me become a leader.

Becoming a captain has helped me develop my leadership skills and become a better person on and off the field. It’s helped me in many different aspects — not just in soccer.

What’s your favorite Christmas tradition?

Usually in my family, we go to Tampa, because we have some other family there. I like to see all of them, because I don’t really get to see them that often, so it’s nice to have our whole family together.

What game so far this season has been a highlight for you?

The game that really stuck out to me was our game against West Orange, where we beat them 7-2.

What do you like to do in your free time?

I’m pretty much all soccer, but I like to work out and play FIFA sometimes.

Do you have a plan of study at UCF? Right now, I’m in between economics and finance. But I think that I’m leaning more toward finance, because I think it’s more of a specific route than economics. I think that will help me more in the long run.

What do you want to do as a career?

I want to play pro. But I obviously need a back-up plan, so I’m going to do well in school.

And if pro doesn’t work out, I’m going to get my master’s degree in either business administration or entrepreneurship.

was basically like a home game for them — which was a huge advantage for them. It was amazing. I’ll never forget that moment.”

The championship game itself — and being named to the College Cup All-Tournament team — was the culmination of a long road traveled for the redshirt junior, who last summer suffered a severe ankle injury that forced her to miss the entire 2017 season.

Although the injury occurred during summer play, it wasn’t diagnosed properly until well into September — when Jeffers was back at FSU — and didn’t get worked on until December.

“I was battling it all season, until they finally figured out that I needed surgery,” Jeffers said. “At first it was like, ‘OK, well we can rehab this and you can start training later in the season,’ and that never happened. I basically had ankle reconstruction surgery — they had to fix cartilage, tissue and I had a bone spur.”

From there, it was rehabbing to get back to full strength, although the injury ensured she would be playing the role of back up — where she played until that fateful ACC championship Sunday in November.

In the second half of that match, starting keeper Brooke Bollinger went down awkwardly in the 62nd minute.

From there, Jeffers took over.

Through her six games as the starter for the ‘Noles throughout the NCAA tourney, Jeffers only gave up two goals. Three of those big wins came against the past three national champs — USC, Penn State and Stanford.

Of all the games throughout the tourney, it was the Sweet 16 win against USC in penalty kicks that really stood out, Jeffers said.

“We had to go into PKs against USC, and personally, I think USC was a Final Fourcaliber team, because we had played them earlier in the season and had tied them 0-0,” Jeffers said.

For Jeffers the national title was the cap to a successful career that spans back to her time growing up in Windermere.

Jeffers first kicked around a soccer ball at age 4, when her father — who grew up playing soccer — decided to sign her up for youth soccer. From there, Jeffers was hooked.

Although she is now known for her goal-stopping abilities, Jeffers actually started out her team career at Olympia as mostly a forward playing up top for the Titans.

Under head coach Scott Baker, Jeffers — a four-year starter — was an immense offensive threat. In her freshman year, she led the team with 12 goals, which she followed with a team-best 16-goal season during her sophomore year.

“It’s really just funny, because it helped me a lot playing on the field,” Jeffers said.

“It helped me with my feet — being able to pass and have good feet.”

Although Jeffers’ career at Olympia saw her help lead the Titans to 40 wins and four consecutive district playoff appearances, a few moments really stood out — including a big win over West Orange in her last year.

“My senior year, we had never beat or tied West Orange since I had been there,” Jeffers said. “We tied West Orange 1-1 — we scored in the last 30 seconds of the game to tie them.”

Her time playing for the Titans, and for the Florida Kraze Krush for two years, drew the attention of ECU — where Jeffers started in goal in all 18 games of the 2016 season as a redshirt freshman. Following her year in Greenville, North Carolina, she transferred to FSU. And although she still has a year left of eligibility, Jeffers — who graduates in the spring — decided to hang up her cleats and move on to a possible career in sports marketing.

Wherever she ends up, Jeffers hopes to utilize the work ethic she honed in soccer and put it toward her future.

“Things aren’t always going to go the way that you expect them or want them to, but being a good teammate and working hard and doing all the things you’re supposed to will go a really long way,” Jeffers said. “People will remember you for how hard you’ve worked and for being a (good) teammate.”

Despite a recommendation for denial by the Orange County Planning and Zoning Commission, a developer seeking to build 113 homes on a piece of land near the Lakes of Windermere community in Horizon West is moving the project forward to the Orange County Commission.

take command of the Dr. Phillips girls basketball team. “(I’m) guiding my team and helping them understand different plays and running them through the plays, so that when we come into a game, they know what they’re supposed to do,” Alexander said.

That leadership role is one Alexander stepped into this year — her second season on the team since transferring from Lake Nona.

Although she led the team last year, where she averaged 15 points per game, the official role has added another dimension to the talented guard who shifts between playing at the point and shooting guard positions.

Like anything new, leading the Panthers on and off the court has been difficult — yet incredibly rewarding — Alexander said.

“It’s pretty challenging, because everything is put on you,” she said.

“It’s pretty tough, but when you’re standing behind a really good coach, and you’re learning new things every practice, it becomes easier.”

Under head coach Anthony Jones, Alexander has thrived as a player since arriving to DP as a junior. A big part of that is because she finally is playing the position she was meant to fill.

Although she had success at Lake Nona, Alexander spent her freshman and sophomore years playing down-low in the post — thanks in part to generally being

tain, as well as in scoring.

So far through this season, the Lake Nona resident has averaged more the 20 points per game and hit a career high of 31 points in the season opener against Gainesville.

At this pace, she will hit her goal of averaging 20-plus points in her final year of high-school ball.

In addition to her coach, Alexander cites her parents as influences. Alexander’s mom was a world-class track athlete who ran at Louisiana State University and participated in the track trials at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Her dad serves as the head coach of the track and wrestling teams, as well as the defensive line coach on the Panthers’ football team. Alexander also runs track for her father.

“My parents have very high expectations for me, so when I don’t play a really good game, it’s kind of hard for them to watch, because they know what to expect from me and how I play,” Alexander said. “But I know it’s all good intentions, and they want to see me do great things and want me to reach my goals.”

With the support of her parents and coaches, the talented senior — who has been playing basketball since she was 8 years old — has a lot going on for her in this final year of high school ball. And afterward?

She’s looking to continue her playing career at the next level.

But wherever that may be, there are more important things to worry about right now — such as making the playoffs and ending her highschool career right.

“For the team, I’d like to make it to districts and win districts this year,” Alexander said. “Last year, we lost to Olympia — that was a pretty upsetting loss. But this year, I plan to go and beat them and the other schools in our district. And hopefully everything goes well.”
