It’s getting closer to showtime for a new black box theater at Rollins College.

Winter Park Planning and Zoning Board members gave preliminary approval at their Tuesday, Dec. 4, meeting for the redevelopment of the former Fred Stone

Theatre at Rollins College.

The old theater — which sat at the southwest corner of Fairbanks and Chase avenues before it was torn down earlier this year — will be replaced with a new 11,665-square-foot black box theater.

cial holiday experience while promoting local food pantries.

About 30 boats decked out in holiday decorations will travel down a parade route through Lake Virginia and Lake Osceola.

The holiday festivities on the water — organized by the Winter Park Rotary Club — take place in two parts: a water ski show at 3 p.m. that can be viewed from the beach just south of the Rollins College student center, and the boat parade at 6 p.m. that can be seen from the viewing lawn near the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. The boat parade will be seen from all around Lake Virginia and Lake Osceola though, as it follows a route that starts at Dinky Dock, circles all of Lake Virginia, passes the Cornell Fine Arts Museum to leave an impression on a group of judges, continues through a canal to Lake Osceola, and finally circles that lake, as well.

“Having a Christmas-themed project and event that also gives back to the students in the community is really what we’re trying to accomplish here,” Winter Park Rotary Club President Jeffrey Blydenburgh said. “It’s fun for everybody.”

Something that makes this year unique is the $500 firstprize award up for grabs for the best overall boat. There also will be prizes recognizing the best Winter Park boat and the best Santa Claus boat.

The parade on water originally was organized by a couple Rotary Club members and was hosted

by the Albin Polasek Museum for several years; Rollins College will be hosting the viewing area for the first time this year. Since its inception, the parade has seen a broad range of creative decorations on the boats — from Winter Park peacocks to Margaritavilleinspired façades.

“It’s just fun — people do a variety of things on their boats,” Blydenburgh said. “You just never quite know what’s going to show up.”

Blydenburgh said the Rotary Club is proud to support the Winter Park High School and Killarney Elementary School food pantries through the holiday event. It’s a need in the community that isn’t always on the forefront of people’s minds, he said. It takes about $10,000 to fund each food pantry for a year, so $20,000 would be the ultimate fundraising goal, Blydenburgh said.

“We’re looking to really appeal to the Winter Park community for their generosity at Christmastime to give to this really important cause,” he said. “(Although) we don’t make a big deal about it, there are a large number of homeless kids at Winter Park High School — there are (more than) 60 families. People don’t know that, and I think most people think that Winter Park is really affluent and doesn’t have problems. There are kids that go to school hungry — same thing with Killarney. This money will go directly to Second Harvest to buy food to put on the shelves of the food pantries.”

is asking for donations to help support the Winter Park High School food pantry and the Killarney Elementary food pantry. In past years, the event has only relied on business sponsors, but this year, the event is leaning on the generosity of residents.

“It’s meant to be a voluntary fundraiser for community charity — you don’t have to pay to get in, but if you’re so inclined you can donate,” Blydenburgh said.

“That’s been with the event since the get-go — it’s always been an event where people can just come out and watch and have a good time.”

Timbers Resorts moves headquarters to Winter Park The developer and operator of hotels and resorts will bring 80 new jobs to the Winter Park area.

ake Lily Park was full of festivities and holiday cheer for the city of Maitland’s Season of Light celebration Saturday, Dec. 1. The family event featured a number of jolly activities, including a snow slide, carnival games, facepainting and even the chance to meet Santa Claus himself. Families picked up food from vendor trucks before settling down for respective performances from the Maitland Middle School jazz band, chorus and chamber orchestra, as well as the Dommerich Elementary School choir, Ballet South and the Maitland Colby Studio Dancers. Mayor Dale McDonald marked the beginning of the season with a Christmas tree-lighting.

Farmer Nguyen, Chau Vo and Jimmy Nguyen enjoyed the event.

One of the world’s premier boutique resort and hotel developers and operators has checked into Winter Park.

Colorado-based Timbers Resorts announced earlier this month it is relocating its headquarters to Winter Park — a move that will bring 80 new jobs to the area.

The decision is in direct response to the company’s “growing portfolio of properties on the East Coast; its interest in expanding further into Florida, the Caribbean and Europe; and its desire to attract top industry talent for 80 job opportunities,” the company stated in a prepared statement.

Timbers Resorts was founded in 1999 and since then has grown to 15 properties located in Aspen, Beaver Creek, Cabo San Lucas, Jupiter, Kauai, Kiawah Island, Maui, Napa, Scottsdale, Snowmass, Sonoma, Southern California, Steamboat, Tuscany and Vail. That collection of properties includes boutique private resorts, hotels and residence clubs in some of the world’s most visited ski, golf, leisure and beach areas.

“We are very excited to join the Winter Park community,” CEO of Timbers Resorts Greg Spencer said. “We feel that Florida provides a phenomenal platform for the Timbers Resorts brand and is a natural setting to launch new creative experiential vacation offerings. Moving our headquarters out of the Aspen area was a difficult decision, but we feel that Winter Park has a very similar spirit that our brand and employees will fit well within.”

The statement from Timbers Resorts adds that Winter Park has been emerging as an epicenter of business in the Southeast with its location in Central Florida. The large amount of hospitality professionals and the close distance to higher education also played a major role in the decision.

“We can’t thank everyone enough for their true professionalism, their helpful nature and their welcoming hospitality,” said Spencer regarding the help Timbers Resorts received from the Orlando Economic Partnership, the city of Winter Park, the city of Orlando, Orange County and Enterprise Florida. “The overall Orlando community should be very proud that this world-class group of professionals is focused on providing job growth in their

respective communities.”

Winter Park Chamber of Commerce CEO and President Betsy Gardner Eckbert said the city should be excited about Timbers Resorts’ arrival in Winter Park.

“We are incredibly excited to have a company whose brand kind of matches Winter Park,” Gardner Eckbert said. “It was really exciting to hear from them. We met with the CEO and their head of marketing.

“In the end, they really felt that Winter Park mirrored their brand, so we were so excited that they realized the benefit of relocating an entire company here,” she said.

“Of course, we have our worldclass airport and shopping and all kinds of things that make Orlando a proper global city, but we’re excited that people are starting to see that kind of boutique experience that you can get from being in Winter Park — not just from living here now but working here, as well.”

but the quality, Gardner Eckbert said. The jobs are anticipated to create an average annual salary of at least $92,848, according to the Aug. 7 agenda for the Orange County Board of County Commissioners.

“That’s going to be a significant impact to our community,” Gardner Eckbert said. “I’m just really excited to work with their whole team. I think they’re just kind of a fresh, nimble team that’s very customer-focused. I think that they’re going to represent Winter Park beautifully, and I know that Winter Park is going to be a great resonant brand for them to be attached to.”

The company’s new headquarters — at 1031 W. Morse Blvd., Suite 350 — is set to open in the first quarter of 2019.

reyhounds are known for their racing prowess, but the breed only competes in races for a handful of years followed by years of retirement and rest.

But even though they’re no longer racing, these greyhounds are still on the move.

Greyhounds in Motion, a Winter Park-based nonprofit founded earlier this year, has a particular niche in Orlando’s animal care community. Rather than focusing on adoption or foster care, the group advertises greyhounds to people looking to adopt from outside of Florida. Often, group members will even drive these same greyhounds to their new homes across the country.

“Over the course of the next 25 months, greyhound racing will be over in Florida,” said founder Tracy Robinson. “There’s definitely going to be more dogs leaving racing and ready to go to homes.

It’s definitely our hope … that the greyhound community will pull together and all the dogs will get homes.”

When the Doggie Door, a Park Avenue landmark, closed its doors and related greyhound transportation nonprofit earlier this year, Robinson knew it would leave a void in the community. She received some tips and insight from one of the store’s co-owners and opened Greyhounds in Motion.

Luckily, the Winter Park greyhound community was more than ready to support the new venture. There have been close to 200 volunteers who have helped

raise funds, spread awareness and even make the long trips to bring the greyhounds to their new homes. Robinson is joined by five other greyhound owners and animal nonprofit figures to form the nonprofit’s board. The six-person group meets monthly — with the help of FaceTime — to strategize and plan events.

When they aren’t doing that, they are on the road. The group’s trained volunteers take frequent trips in rented transport vans with up to six greyhounds to other states. Robinson said they have traveled as far as New Jersey and often put dogs with medical conditions in the front of the line.

Many of the greyhound groups in various states know one another and stay in contact — Robinson likes to think her group is a connecting force that adds to the framework.

“I always try to tell people on their first trip how exciting it will be when you get the dogs out and they get to meet their people,” she said. “But I think until you see it the first time, it’s hard to (understand). People are crying (because) they’re so excited to meet their dogs.”

Greyhounds in Motion has been organizing fundraising events, including a skate night at Semoran Skateway to an afternoon party at the Ivanhoe Brewing Company that raised more than $10,000.

They plan to be gift-wrapping presents at local Barnes & Noble bookstores in the near future.

Robinson adopted her first greyhound, Iggy, after settling in Winter Park nine years ago. Iggy was followed by another. And another.

And another. She says greyhounds are like potato chips — you can’t stop at just one.

These days, four retired greyhound racers live with Robinson and her husband. Despite their appearance, her greyhounds aren’t high-energy. Instead, the four dogs are calm and spend their days snoozing around the house. Robinson and her husband — whom she met volunteering at an animal shelter while he was adopting a greyhound himself — each take two of the large dogs on walks together.

Florida will phase out greyhound racing completely by 2020, giving Greyhounds in Motion time to prepare for heavier numbers. In the meantime, the group is laying the groundwork and engaging with the Winter Park community.

“Our hope is that whenever someone reaches out, we’ve built a strong enough group of volunteers and enough money to support them,” Robinson said.

Have your voice heard about Lake Baldwin Park Dear Editor: I am a longtime supporter of the Winter Park Parks and Recreation Department. Recently, I have been following its advisory board’s meetings about the required review of our Parks Master Plan but especially as it applies to Lake Baldwin. Staff targeted Lake Baldwin with policy and condition issues on which the Winter Park City Commission must make decisions. This will be discussed from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, before the regular City Commission meeting. The board chose not to comment or make any recommendations.

As you know, Lake Baldwin has been a regional dog park for eight years using 11 acres of the 13-acre park.

However the “friends” of the dog park never fulfilled their commitment to raise

funds for the entire park.

Also our ordinances state Lake Baldwin is a community park (for residents within three miles), and our ordinances talk about community access to beaches. Staff targeted the park with “poor” conditions near the beach because of overuse of the now regional dog park.

Staff has become aware of a new community interest in water sports, such as kayaking, paddle-boarding and canoeing.

If people are interested in supporting the idea of opening up the “beach” area at Lake Baldwin for all these activities, please have them email mayorandcommissioners@cityofwinterpark.org.

My suggestion has been to just move the existing fence so the public has beach access and for now the dogs have the rest of the park.

will seat 130 people and feature retractable seating for maximum flexibility with the space, along with faculty offices, dressing rooms, classrooms and general storage areas.

“It was greatly needed — we have a wonderful theater department that was recently ranked in the top 25 in the nation for undergraduate theater programs, and that black box theater is a teaching space, and it’s a space where our students can practice not just acting but directing and producing shows,” Rollins College President Grant Cornwell said. “It’s a tremendously important teaching facility and the old Fred Stone was just end-of-life. It did not serve us well and it was old and tired and needed to come down.”

The new building not only will be far more pleasing to the eye from a design standpoint, but also it will function as more than a theater, Cornwell said.

“In addition, we also have a dance program that has facilities

that are old and tired, and this is going to incorporate a dance studio right in with the black box theater, as well as classrooms for technical theater, sound and lighting,” Cornwell said. “It’s going to be a great teaching facility, and it’s going to take our nationally recognized theater program and enable us to move it forward.”

The footprint of the new building is larger than the previous theater and would involve closing the existing Chase Avenue to vehicular traffic and redeveloping it as a pedestrian path leading from Fairbanks Avenue into the campus.

One thing is for sure: The students at Rollins College can’t wait for the show to go on at the new theater, Cornwell said.

“From the time I got to Rollins, students have been lobbying me for a new black box theater — letter-writing campaigns and the whole thing,” Cornwell said. “They’re thrilled that finally they’re going to have a facility that they really do need and deserve.

There’s a tremendous amount of excitement for it.”

Mike Thomas eyes second term The Maitland councilman believes there is more work to be done with the city.

Mike Thomas has enjoyed his years contributing to his community as a councilman for the city of Maitland. And he likes to think that he’s just getting started.

“I’ve enjoyed getting involved in some things and having an impact,” he said. “But there’s still some things I want to do.”

On March 12, Thomas will attempt to hold onto his council seat with the Maitland municipal elections. His seat, as well as the seat of departing councilwoman Joy Goff-Marcil, will be up for grabs to any Maitland residents

interested in joining the five-person council.

Thomas’ time on the council has humble beginnings. He said it all started with a possible sidewalk on Tuscarora trail.

“I just wanted to get it built,” Thomas said. “It was on Tuscarora trail in Dommerich; it needed a sidewalk forever. I went to council and spoke as a citizen and didn’t get anywhere. … I decided I was going to get that sidewalk finished.”

His ambitions have grown in the following years. There are still a number of issues Thomas wishes to tackle, including lowering the property tax rate over the next several years, the retrofitting of

the city’s older subdivisions and thinking of further ways to modernize the city.

Something close to his heart is the installation of a coordinated bike trail from Sandspur to Dommerich. He said he wants people to get on bicycles at Maitland station and be able to make their way to Lake Lily.

In addition, the councilman hopes to see the day when the city’s weekly farmers market on Lake Lily instead will occur at the new Independence Lane downtown area as a way to further unite the city. The city is working to bring new visitors and income to both the Independence Lane and

planned Independence Square project, something Thomas wants to see to fruition.

“I want to create a connection that makes this all a whole, it’s not just a block of apartments here and a block of apartments there,” he said. “It’s all one interconnected whole. … That’s why the farmers market in Winter Park is so successful. It’s right next to Park Avenue.”

Thomas has been a Maitland resident for nearly 18 years — he distinctly remembers moving to the city shortly after 9/11. A reporter and columnist for more than 30 years, Thomas eventually decided to make the transition to government. He prides himself on his direct, blunt approach to policy on the City Council.

“It was just all about the challenge of serving on City Council,” he said. “I spent 30 years on the (other) side as a reporter. Being on the outside and critiquing and criticizing and then being on this side and making decisions, I’ve really enjoyed it. … I think about what I’d write about if I was on the other side. I try to be open and transparent. We all deeply adhere to the Sunshine Law, and I try not to take any politics into consideration. I just try to see what’s the best thing to do.”

Park Maitland School donates record number to food pantry BLACK TIE REPORTER

The Park Maitland School’s food drive turnout was good for many years, according to student ambassador coordinator and fifth-grade teacher John Courson.

Not amazing — but good.

But then came the golden turkey trophy.

“I ordered a golden turkey trophy,” Courson said. “I put the competition aspect into play a few years ago. (This year) had a ridiculously high number. … This year was definitely the most; it went above and beyond.”

As it turns out, a little competition can be healthy — or very healthy when it comes to Park Maitland School. During its 2018 food and hygiene drive, the elementary school donated 4,227 items to the Killarney Elementary School’s food pantry — almost double what was donated just a few years ago.

The school’s annual food drive, which Courson has overseen since 2008 when he joined the school, originally supported the Second Harvest Food Bank. Now, the school donates items to local Title

I elementary schools that serve students in high-needs areas.

How it works is simple: The school’s 500-plus students break off into home room teams and work to collect as many nonperishable food items and hygiene products as they can starting in early November. Beyond the total number of students, Courson has eight to nine ambassador students, typically in fifth and sixth grade, who oversee the entire enterprise. Those student ambassadors count each and every food and hygiene product, keep a record for the teachers, and more.

At the end of the two-week

competition, the items are tallied, and the winning class receives both the fabled turkey trophy and a morning treat celebration.

It’s a simple approach, but it really works, Courson said. Just a few years ago, the finally tally was a little over 2,000. Last year, it broke 3,000 and 4,000 for this year.

The student ambassador program, which Courson oversees, has three components — a global component, a campus component and a community component. The food drive is just one of nine different outreach programs where children can volunteer and con-

tribute to their community in a positive way. He said the programs emphasize a hands-on approach that demands effort.

When the competition was complete, the student ambassadors took the food to the Killarney food pantry and stocked it themselves — just in time for Thanksgiving.

“The idea is to give family enough food for the weekends,” Courson said. “The amount of food we collected will be enough to send to those families during Thanksgiving for that whole week but for the Christmas holiday break for that two weeks.”

Pride restored

The Edgewater Eagles’ season came to an end in the state semifinal game, but the team continues to show improvement.

The Edgewater Eagles did not capture a state title in football this season, but they arguably attained something even more important — the hearts and minds of their community.

An inspiring season of varsity high-school football at Edgewater High School came to an end Friday, Nov. 30, as the Eagles fell to the Lakeland High School Dreadnaughts 56-21 in the state semifinal game.

Edgewater finished in the final four in Class 8A with an overall record of 12-2.

The Eagles put up a strong fight against the Dreadnaughts early and ended the first half down by only a touchdown in a close 21-14 battle.

Lakeland got its offense going in the last two quarters though, and built a lead that Edgewater couldn’t overcome.

It may not have been the ending the Eagles wanted, but a look back to just two years ago, when the program was struggling to win one game, puts things in perspective, head coach Cameron Duke said.

“You’re excited to get here and go toe-to-toe in the first half with them; it was a good game,” Duke said. “The second half got out of hand a little bit, but our guys bat-

tled. I love this group.

“The guys were 0-10 two years ago, 9-3 (last year) and 12-2 this year, so the program’s in the right direction. I love these seniors,” he said. “Your heart breaks that it ends, but we played a great team tonight.”

Over the past two years with Duke as the new coach, Edgewater has gone 21-5 following that dismal 0-10 season in 2016. Duke said this year’s results were a testament to how hard the boys in red and white worked.

“It was a great year,” he said.

“Lakeland’s a really good football team, and now it’s time to put our arms around these guys and let them know we love them win or lose and move on.”

A successful season wouldn’t have been possible without a complete team effort over the 14 games.

On offense, senior quarterback R.J. Harvey took care of business with 107 completions for 1,815 yards and 115 carries for 1,350 yards. The Eagle will be headed to the University of Virginia next season but said he never will forget what his highschool team was able to accomplish.

“There were more fans coming to our games (this year), and you could see how many fans were here tonight, Harvey said. “We brought a lot of people together.”

Harvey had plenty of help. Isaiah Connelly led the way in the running game with 170 carries for 1,330 yards, while Cobe Stribling kept

the receiving game going strong with 30 receptions for 685 yards.

A stout defense made many of those wins happen, as well. Shary Jefferson led the team with 105 total tackles during the season, with Deshaun Troutman right

behind him with 104. Nate White led the team in sacks with 21.

Edgewater’s ability to turn things around over the past two seasons has given the College Park community something to be excited about and get behind, Duke said.

The pride — which the school had been so known for in years past — has been restored.

“I love this school, I love this community, and we appreciate the support,” Duke said. “We’re hoping to be in this environment and this game often. It’s good for us to be here and learn from it.”

For a student-athlete, there’s nothing like the hard work of a high-school career paying off and committing to playing at a university.

More than 30 local high-school students had the opportunity to do just that during an early signing period last month. Winter Park High School had nine studentathletes commit to schools, Trinity Preparatory School had three, Bishop Moore Catholic School had 18, and Orangewood Christian School had one.

Winter Park High School’s crew teams and Bishop Moore’s baseball team had strong showings, with five athletes from each school committing to play.

Among the Wildcats who committed was crew team captain Aubrey Fitts, who will be rowing for the University of Michigan next year. The fourth-year, varsity eight rower has an impressive résumé: two gold state tournament medals, a silver state tournament medal and two silver national tournament medals.

She is excited to get started at her new school, which finished seventh at the NCAA tournament last year and third the year before, she said.

“It’s an honor to pursue academics and athletics at such a high level at an institution,” Fitts said. “Coming from Winter Park High School — which also holds the same values — it’s really cool that I get to move to another big program.”

Winter Park’s long history of excellence has helped Fitts feel confident and ready for the next level, she said.

“Seeing girls ahead of me that I’ve looked up to go to great colleges and pursue rowing at a Division I level — including my sister (Abbi) even — just has inspired me to work at that and be active in the whole recruiting process,” Fitts said.

Out of Orangewood Christian School, senior catcher Brooks Rikeman said he was excited to further his baseball career at Jacksonville University.

“It seems like such a great place to be — just the atmosphere around there baseball-wise and the way the guys play,” he said.

Rikeman said he brings a tenacious style of play to the baseball diamond and hopes to contribute to the team’s success.

“They just get the kids that are gritty and the kids that just want to win,” he said.

“It just seemed like such a good place to be and work for a spot.”

What happens when you combine science and sweets? Just ask Phenomenom Nitrogen Ice Cream & Bake Shop.

A new eatery focused on combining custom ice cream treats and warm, decadent cookies recently opened its doors at 501 Orlando Ave., Suite 309, Winter Park.

It’s the sixth location Phenomenom has opened in Florida, and regional manager Richard Faust said the new shop is thrilled to be in Winter Park.

Here’s how the sugar rush shop works: Guests at Phenomenom choose their base ice cream from a variety of flavors such as vanilla, chocolate, dulce de leche, strawberry, Biscoff, Nutella and mint.

That ice cream is then hit with nitrogen from a high-tech tubing system — a process that makes the ice cream more dense, smooth, chewy and flavorful, Faust said.

“We’re flash freezing fresh ice cream with liquid nitrogen,” he said. “Basically, we’re making fresh ice cream every time — it’s made to order.

“The nitrogen is -320 degrees and basically what it’s doing is it’s depositing its temperature into the product, which is the ice cream mix and whatever flavoring you choose,” he said. “It takes about 60 to 90 seconds, and then we have fresh ice cream.”

Faust said the fast process gives the ice cream that texture that you won’t find buying ice cream at a store.

“If you make ice cream in a factory, and then it goes into a freezer for transport, and then it goes into the actual truck, and then it goes into another truck, and then it goes to a warehouse, and then

finally Publix or wherever you buy your ice cream, the temperature of that product was never consistent,” Faust said. “It always fluctuated, and in the science definition, it changed the product.

When it melts and re-freezes, the consistency is different.”

A variety of toppings — including different fruits, candies and cereals — can then either be blended into the ice cream or placed on top after the freezing process.

“The possibilities are endless with the flavors and 30 to 40 mix-ins,” Faust said. “There’s thousands and thousands of possibilities.”

Patrons can even take things a step further and have the ice cream scooped on top of a sixounce, fresh-baked cookie — straight from the recipe book of owner Chuck Woodard’s mother.

“It’s kind of like your dessert ice cream/coffee kind of thing,” Faust said.

Phenomenom began in March 2016 in Davie, Florida when Woodard opened the first location after originally making ice cream in his garage as a science experiment. The shop has gone on to open up locations in Boca Raton, Pinecrest, South Beach (just serving cookies), Gainesville and finally Winter Park.

Faust said he can’t wait to see the concept catch on at its newest location.

“This is what we want the future of ice cream to be,” Faust said. “We want ice cream to be fresh … that’s what we’re here to deliver. … We see that bright future in Winter Park.”

Cosmic creation The Mediterranean Street Food by Shishco stand has a vibrant new mural.

You’ve probably noticed the Mediterranean Street Food by Shishco stand on Lake Avenue — the structure has been part of the city for three decades.

These days, though, you might have noticed something new: a large, vibrant mural wrapping along the stand depicting the silhouette of a woman containing the entire cosmos.

It’s all part of the plan, according to owner Julio Bermudez. The owner of the stand, which serves a number of Mediterranean dishes, always had been a fan of art and thought his stand needed a touchup. That’s where Brandi Hart, Bermudez’s childhood friend of 18 years, came in.

Hart, a second-grade teacher at Swanee Elementary in North Florida, is also a part-time artist who holds an art degree from the University of Central Florida.

Although she had placed her art career on hold for the sake of her one in education, lately, she has revisited her more creative side.

She now is promoting herself online and offering to draw, design, or even create artistic cakes and cookies. When Bermudez asked

her to spearhead the project, she jumped at the opportunity.

“It’s been fun, we have a great time,” Bermudez said. “We’ve gotten into paint fights; we have 18 years of friendship. We see the same thing in a different way and help each other with it.”

There were a few restrictions, though. The mural wasn’t allowed to have a message or words — the final design had to be something strictly visual. Hart and Bermudez took that as a challenge and found something that worked on a purely aesthetic level. Although the original idea was to have just a woman’s silhouette, it quickly shifted into a more celestial design, an aspect Bermudez appreciated.

Hart sketched the final design and drew the woman on the stand.

The duo then spray-painted in the colors and galaxies that surrounded her. Bermudez followed Hart’s lead, helping with the mural in several places.

Hart made the three-and-ahalf-hour drive to Maitland to assist Bermudez with the mural for the last two months. The actual painting of the piece, though, only took two days to complete – not that those two days were easy. The duo faced fierce heat and Orlando’s brief cold snap — not to mention intense winds that messed with the paint — but Hart still thinks the final product is magnificent.

“It’s all in the moment; that’s the beauty of art,” Hart said. “It changes and evolves with how you think and what you’re feeling that day.”

and stayed close throughout high school. Although they grew apart later in life, Hart said they have a friendship through which they can meet again like no time had passed.

The galaxy girl is just the start.

Bermudez said he wants paintings and color to wrap around the entire stand and has started work on the other side. He’s continuing to work on it.

“It’s still not finished; we still have a lot to do,” Bermudez said.

“The other side is still going. It’s been around two months since I got started. … After I cover the right side of (the stand), next is the friend. I still need to add color. I want to keep it all in the mystical (area). I like the color and want to keep it that way.”
