you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

And for recent Ocoee High graduate Tom Wilson, that statement rings especially true right now: He’s been able to turn his love for the Halo video games into a job.

Wilson — better known in the gaming community by his gamertag, Saiyan — became a pro Halo 5 gamer for professional esports video game organization Luminosity Gaming in February. But the 18-year-old’s history with the game goes back several years.

“My big brother got me into it,” Wilson said. “I started playing when I was 4, playing the first Halo with him. Now we’re up to Halo 5, but he was always a big gamer and he got me into it. I’ve always been a fan of Halo but didn’t start getting into competitive play until a year ago.”

Although he’s played the game for years, he started getting serious about it in summer 2016, during his search for a job. The market for summer jobs was tough, so he decided to spend his free time getting better at the game. The key is to play often — and play well.

“A lot of it just comes to playing a lot, and people recognize the talent,” he said. “I was in the amateur tier when I first started playing and then was playing a lot of online multiplayer. People start to notice if you’re consisting playing well online. That brings attention to you.”

Wilson moved from the amateur to the pro ranks in February after consistently playing well enough to be picked up by Luminosity. Currently, he is under a yearlong contract with the company and plays the game with his teammates, occasionally traveling for large-scale competitions.

“They have many different teams in other games as well, so they make money off having teams placing well,” he said.

“They receive a percentage of what we earn. They’re organizations we play under and represent. It’s a job because I make money as a salary.”

He also earns money from the competitions. The weekend of Oct. 20, he traveled to Denver for one, coming back with $2,500.

3. Try to learn from the best. “That’s what I was doing a lot. I would watch streams and watch other top players play and see what made their game stand out,” Wilson said.

Many gamers will watch livestreams of the players they admire to figure out how they play and learn from them. Players can study each other and look for qualities they want to implement for themselves. The game requires a wealth of mental skill, as well as good dexterity to move around the controllers.

“Halo usually takes a bit more skill in the way of how hard it is to kill someone in the game,” he said. “There’s more strategy there, and it’s much more team oriented. There’s a lot of focus on individual skill, but the best kind of gameplay and teams are going to be those that work together.”

BALANCING ACT

It’s also a commitment of both time and funds. Good setups cost money, and getting better at the game doesn’t happen overnight.

Wilson practices a minimum of three hours per day, while balancing classes at the University of Central Florida, where he is studying chemistry.

“I pretty much am among the top players of this game, so I’m constantly practicing,” he said.

“It’s my job. … We do have set scrimmages against other teams, because it’s not just myself, it’s

me and three other players (on my team). Being a professional Halo player means being among the top eight teams in the world.”

Playing on a team requires constant discussion and placing trust and confidence in teammates.

Wilson and his teammates will often use an in-game replay feature to pinpoint mistakes made or figure out how to improve gameplay.

During his senior year of high school, he said, balancing his professional gaming with collegelevel classes was even tougher than it is now. He dual-enrolled his junior and senior years and took Advanced Placement classes, completing six college-level courses each year.

Now, he’s taking four at UCF and doesn’t have to be on campus every day, which opens up time for gaming. But as fun as it is to go professional in the world of Halo, he said, putting school aside is not an option.

“Currently, I just want to keep playing as long as I can while also managing school,” he said. “I can just manage my hours throughout the day — If I need to be up earlier and do schoolwork later, I can manage it either way.”

When RaceTrac wanted to build in the town of Oakland eight years ago, the applicant and principals couldn’t get on board with the town’s Gateway Corridor Overlay guidelines, which are strictly written and leave little room for negotiation.

RaceTrac is back, trying once again to bring its market and service station to Oakland.

The gateway design rules apply to West Colonial Drive, where RaceTrac wants to build on a 16-acre tract at the intersection with Remington Road. RaceTrac representatives attended the Nov. 28 Oakland Town Commission meeting to discuss the details that appeared to be stalling town approval.

The client is proposing a Planned-Unit Development of six lots, eight buildings and 50,000 square feet of floor area.

RaceTrac properties typically include a single, large, red canopy and service island; diamondshaped columns by the gas pumps; brick-and-stone buildings; and a 175-square-foot roadside sign.

Oakland’s guidelines call for two shorter canopies, squared-off columns, all-brick buildings and a 48-square-foot monument sign.

Another issue is the architecture on the main building. The town had recommended four different traditional architectural options and several awning options.

Mayor Kathy Stark was adamant the building have a more historical look.

In a memo to the commission, Town Manager Dennis Foltz wrote: “Not only is this the seminal commercial development utilizing the new Gateway Corridor criteria — and, thus, sets a design standard that will assist in future development along (State Road) 50 — it also sends a message to developers and residents that the town of Oakland means business and that it intends to maintain the character of our town and protect the residents’s desire to not be ‘anywhere USA.’” The commission tabled its vote on the first reading of the ordinance until Dec. 12.

The fun began Friday, Dec. 1, when the city of Winter Garden kicked off its festivities with the 30th annual Light Up Winter Garden. The event began with a special ceremony filled with traditional Christmas hymns and a candle lighting before the tree and street lighting were flipped on. Kids got to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, sled down an ice slope and make crafts, while vendors had their booths open for perusing.

And just a few miles away, community leaders, politicians and local organizations gathered to spread Christmas cheer during the city of Ocoee’s annual Christmas parade. Participants ranged from Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson and city commissioners to girl scouts, marching bands and motorcyclists. Spectators along the route waved and cheered as they collected beads and candy from those in the parade.

Later that night, Ocoee was all aglow during its fifth annual Ocoee Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony. Visitors were given the opportunity to visit Mrs. and Mr. Claus, take pony rides, get their faces painted and take tours of the Withers-Maguire House.

mately widen 3.66 miles of Avalon Road, is divided into four segments beginning just north of Schofield Road and ending on the south leg of Loop Road.

Brian Sanders, a chief planner at the Orange County Transportation Planning Division, said construction on segments two through four of the project is anticipated to start around March at the earliest.

from the current two lanes to four 12-foot wide lanes — which will cost an estimated total of about $16 million — is a partnership project with DR Horton Homes that will be funded by a variety of credits.

In a partnership project, there is an agreement between private developers and the county that provides the county with a means for financing transportation network improvements and obtaining right-of-way in exchange for impact fee credits for the private

developers, he said.

“All the roads in Horizon West are in our long-range transportation plan … and in this particular area (Village H), these are what we call partnership projects,” Sanders said. “With partnership projects, the county does not budget a capital-improvement project in there. So, in other words, those aren’t funded with cash dollars — they’re funded using transportation impact fee credits, or trips, or concurrency (mitigation fees).

H

enry Goehres was 25 years old and working as a welder in the steel mills of Pennsylvania when he was drafted into the U.S. Army on Dec. 7, 1941 — Pearl Harbor Day. He completed his basic training in Texas and was assigned to fight in the European Theater of World War II. Classified as a sharpshooter, a job that requires perfect eyesight, Goehres was preparing to leave for Europe when doctors checked his eyes and informed him he needed a new prescription for his glasses.

His unit went without him, so he was reassigned and sent to the island of Luzon in the northern Philippines, then a U.S. commonwealth. He recalls fondly a stopover in New Guinea when he recognized his brother George’s troop ship in the harbor. Moments later, he was face-to-face with his brother, 9,000 miles from home in the middle of World War II. The Winter Garden veteran — a private first class — turned 101 this week. Although most of his war memories have faded with time, he remembers being in combat in an infantry division.

“I didn’t kill anyone,” he said matter-of-factly. “Just (hit) an arm or leg, that’s all.”

When he was discharged in February 1946, he returned to his birthplace of Johnstown, Penn-

sylvania, and resumed his welding position at the steel mill, building railroad cars.

His career there lasted 43 years.

In that time, he met and married his wife of more than 54 years, Mildred, and they had a son and a daughter. Goehres also has six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Goehres said he wanted to go to college to be a history teacher, but his family lacked the funds.

He did, however, teach Sunday school at his church for 72 years.

Eleven years ago, he moved from Pennsylvania to Florida to live with his daughter, Ruth Oyler.

They have lived in Winter Garden for seven years.

Goehres’s parents immigrated from Germany before he was born. He grew up with the German language spoken in his home and learned English once he attended school. When relatives in Germany wrote letters to America, Goehres translated them for his younger family members who didn’t know the ancestral language.

The 101-year-old always has been a sports fan and has remained true to his Pennsylvania teams: the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. As a child, he remembers listening to the baseball games on the radio. In later years, he attended the games.

Oyler said her father remained active until he was 90, keeping up with his vegetable garden, mowing the yard, cleaning his house gutters and washing his car on Saturday mornings.

On Wednesday, Nov. 29, a landscape crew relocated the tree to its new home, on the shore of a lake just outside the future amenity center, at 1000 Civitas Way. Thom Cunningham, vice president of Crescent Communities, the developer of Oakland Park, said the plan is to peel the bark off and seal what remains of the tree. A trail will be built around the lake, and the tree will be one of the amenities on this trail.

When Hurricane Irma blew through Florida in September, the severe storm uprooted several trees in the Oakland Park community.

Instead of turning the largest of the downed trees into mulch, the Oakland Park team decided to move it and turn it into a piece of natural art.

The Bridgewater Middle Beta Club advanced to the national Beta Club convention after winning first place in the technology division at the state convention.

Crosley is planning a visit to a local assisted-living facility, where the students will be able to serve residents a Christmas dinner.

“They’re always asking when they can volunteer,” Crosley said of her students.

For Crosley, seeing the students get involved and help others is rewarding.

“They’re very grateful at the end of every event we do,” she said. “It makes me feel good. Volunteering isn’t always fun, but it’s about the life lessons behind it.”

When Crosley told club members they would be attending the state convention for the first time this year, several members stepped forward to submit projects.

“It was such a scramble, but a group just came together and said let’s go for it,” Crosley said.

After brainstorming project ideas, the students decided to create a video promoting the club’s theme for the year, “Beta on my mind.”

“They did not need my help,” Crosley said. “They did everything. They edited it. They came up with the script. Since this was our first time ever going, this was a big deal for us.”

Because the group won first place, the video will advance to the national convention, which will be held in June 2018 in Savannah, Georgia.

No one expected the Bridgewater Middle School Beta Club to win any awards at the state convention two weeks ago. After all, it was the club’s first year ever attending the convention.

Instead, the club captured the top spot in the technology division.

“There were 35 of us there, and we all started screaming,” said Beta Club sponsor Rosemarie Crosley.

“They were so happy. It was really exciting — especially for our first time. We were psyched.”

The club had been dormant until three years ago, when Crosley decided to give the club a fresh start and relaunch it. That first year, only a handful of students joined. The following year, membership grew to about 25 students.

This year, membership tripled — Crosley inducted more than 50 members into the club.

“It’s a lot,” Crosley said. “I love the kids, but I’m trying to learn 70 new faces. We’ve outgrown my classroom, but I’m excited, because they’re excited.”

Each club member is required to log 15 volunteer hours each semester. Already, the students have volunteered at community events at both Bay Lake and Independence elementary schools. This month,

arla Lewis has watched her son, Shamar, endure multiple hospital visits and physical pain due to his battle with sickle cell anemia. In fact, it’s what spurred her to found the Kids Conquering Sickle Cell Disease Foundation, an Orlando-based nonprofit dedicated to helping kids and families on their journey to conquer chronic hemoglobin diseases.

Lewis hosted a Red Carpet Soiree benefit dinner for the foundation on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Rosen Centre Hotel.

The evening included musical performances from Demitrious Wyant, Jeremy Tutt and the Sunshine Mafia, as well as a nice dinner, music and fashion show.

Benji Watson Foundation Fire & Ice Fundraiser

The Watson family looked their best for the annual fundraiser.

t was a night of ice and fire during the Benji Watson Cancer Foundation’s seventh annual fundraiser Saturday, Dec. 2.

The Fire and Ice benefit, held at The Veranda at Thornton Park, lived up to its name with cool drinks and a trio of fire performers that dazzled the crowd.

College Park native Benjamin Watson was diagnosed with pediatric cancer when he was 14, and after overcoming the disease, started the foundation to raise money for other children suffering from pediatric cancer. Guests bid on autographed sports paraphernalia and VIP tickets to the “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” at the silent and live auctions. Watson also sang a few songs for the crowd as the night came to a close.

he Orlando Repertory Theatre was full of holiday cheer during its fifth annual Holiday Family Gala Sunday, Dec. 3.

The event, which raises money for the theater’s educational programs, offered a silent auction, a Christmas cupcake decoration table and a photo booth for parents and their children alike.

The classic Christmas story, “White Christmas,” will come to life on-stage this weekend at Windermere High School.

It’s the department’s first full production of the year, and everyone is putting their best foot forward for the show.

“We’re coming out of nowhere and coming out strong,” said Jonathan Jackson, assistant director of the theater department.

With no seniors this year, Jackson said many of the juniors have stepped up to the challenge of leading and cultivating the program.

“They’ve been thrust into leadership, so it’s a challenge for them,” he said. “It adds an interesting element. Just last year, they were sophomores. Now, they’re the leaders of everything.”

For junior Bailey Leich, getting to star in a lead role for the show is a new experience.

“It’s a lot of pressure, because it’s the first show, and we’re trying to set the bar high for Windermere,” said Leich, who will star as Betty Haynes. “But it’s been fun to do.”

Sophomore Katy Mier, starring opposite Leich as Judy Haynes, said it’s been fun to help create the traditions and legacy for the school’s theater department.

“It’s really cool,” she said. “We get to set those standards.”

“It’s a lot less of a frantic atmosphere,” said sophomore Blake Croft, who will star as Phil Davis in the show. “So it’s easier and calmer, even though it’s a lot of work to take on.”

With 46 students in the cast, the musical includes singing, dancing and even a few tap numbers.

“Judy and I have a big tap number at the start of act two, and tap is like my favorite thing ever,” Croft said.

Although the Windermere High thespians hope to cement their legacy with their production of “White Christmas,” they already made a historic mark for the department earlier this fall.

After performing a one-act show called “Almost, Maine” at the district competition, the department was one of four selected to perform its show at the state competition, which will be held in March.

“We’re making school history as we go, so we have a legacy of success” Jackson said.

This page from the town of Oakland’s city council meeting minutes is dated May 16, 1916, and features a plethora of Smiths. Councilmembers Josef Henschen and Robert L. Smith were intimately involved with the Orange Belt Railway, which set up its offices in Oakland in the late 1880s.

Among the items on the agenda was a bill for $25 from Councilmember A.F. Smith for services rendered from April 23 through Oct. 23 of that year. It also was decided at this meeting to “request Mr. C.F. Mather-Smith to have the electric lights on Fourth Street replaced.” Today’s Tubb Street, the road ran north and south alongside the Mather-Smith property. A final motion fixed the council clerk’s salary “$2 for each meeting.”

“It feels excellent — we’ve been talking about finishing all year,” head coach Rodney Wells said.

“We’ve been on the road with three tough opponents. … Now, we get to go back to what we call home — at Camping World Sta-

Friday’s state semifinal was the second meeting of the two powerhouses from Orange County’s west side this season — and, although the Mustangs (12-2) had shut out the Panthers in the regular season, Dr. Phillips wasted no time in getting on the board this time around.

On the first play from scrimmage, Panthers junior running back Brandon Fields found a seam and scampered 73 yards to the end zone. It was the first of two big plays for Dr. Philips in the first half — the other was a 72-yard touchdown run by quarterback BeSean McCray — and it quickly

HORIZON WEST Each Wednesday, once school has let out, they trek as a group down the sidewalk, fishing poles in hand.

They are the members of the Bridgewater Middle School Fishing Club, which had its third meeting of the year Nov. 29. The club has been around in some form for a few years now, and this school year it is sponsored

by Bridgewater faculty members Charles “Chip” Harbin, Joseph Cormier and Matthew Mowel.

The members gather on campus after school, retrieving their equipment for those who brought and dropped off their own poles or tackles boxes in the morning.

Poles are provided for students who do not have their own. After any announcements, the group’s experienced fishers will walk into the Independence neighborhood adjacent to the school, while the less-experienced members will stay behind for a tutorial before heading over themselves.

The meetings so far this year have drawn between 15 to 20 kids. It’s a mix of students such as Tripp House and Carter Hicks, who have been fishing since they were toddlers, and students who are completely new to the sport.

“I want the kids with experience to take initiative and share

tips with the other kids,” Harbin said.

The club — mostly boys, but it had three girls at its most recent meeting — operates somewhat informally once the group reaches its destination for the day, usually one of the small bodies of water scattered throughout Independence.

Students spread out, with some clustering and others striking out alone to find the perfect spot. During the most recent meeting, Principal Andrew Jackson even joined in.

It’s relatively quiet at first, and the group gets some curious stares from passing residents jogging or walking their dogs, but eventually shouts of, “I got one!” fill the afternoon air.

For an experienced fisher such as Hicks, a sixth-grader who said the largest fish he has ever caught weighed in at an impressive 20 pounds, it is an exciting thing to share his love of fishing.

“We’re able to meet different people and we can get more people into the sport,” Hicks said.

Austin Gomber, a 2011 graduate of West Orange High and pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor-league system, was added to the club’s 40-man roster.

Legacy Charter is fielding a girls soccer team for the first time this winter, and the Eagles are off to a 1-3-1 start. Helping lead the brand-new team is sophomore Christina Boyce. Boyce has scored two goals already and has one assist and 22 steals to her credit, while also taking corner kicks for the Eagles.

Were you excited to find out that there would be a girls team at Legacy this year?

I was looking forward to it last year, because it was a possibility.

So this year, I was really excited.

I figured it would be fun to play with just girls.

How do you think the team has done so far?

I think we’ve played pretty (well) for our first year. I didn’t expect much, because it is the first year, but I think overall, we’re getting better and doing well as a firstyear program.

How long have you been playing soccer?

I played a lot when I was little, like at the YMCA, and then I quit for like four years. I started back up here (at Legacy) in eighth grade. … They had a soccer camp that they did during the year and so I started that and after that I played in high school.

What do you enjoy about playing soccer?

I like just running around and being aggressive. I can kick it pretty far, so I like shooting from far distances.

If P.E. counts, then that.

What do you like to do when you’re not doing schoolwork or playing sports?

I’m always on the go, so I’m always with people.

Do you have any career paths you think you’d like to pursue?

Right now, I’m thinking I want to be something like an athletic trainer or a personal trainer. Or, I’m thinking about becoming a nurse.

If it’s a rainy Saturday afternoon and you’re stuck inside, what are you watching?

Probably “One Tree Hill.” My friends watch it, and they were like, “You should watch it,” so now I watch it.

What are you looking forward to the most about Christmas?

I like giving people gifts. I’ve started my (Christmas gifts) list.

Just six years removed from his senior season at West Orange High, Austin Gomber is one step closer to his lifelong dream of making it to “The Show.”

Gomber, a left-handed pitcher in the St. Louis Cardinals’ minor-league system, was added to the Cardinals’ 40-man roster Nov. 20. Gomber was among four prospects added to the team’s 40-man to protect them from being eligible for this month’s Rule 5 Draft, which will take place Dec. 14 at the MLB Winter Meetings at Disney.

Although the move does not guarantee Gomber will be on the Cardinals’ 25-man “active” roster for Opening Day next spring, it is an acknowledgement that the former Warrior — the eighth-ranked pitching prospect in St. Louis’ farm system — is on the right track.

“Obviously, it’s exciting because it’s kind of just getting one step closer to the ultimate goal — to play in the big leagues,” Gomber said. “Not a lot of people have the opportunity to be on a Major League roster — I think it bodes well for this upcoming year.”

Springfield, Missouri, will start the 2018 season at the team’s Big League Spring Training for a third consecutive year — but for the first time as a roster-invite.

Gomber says Spring Training with the Big League coaches is a balancing act.

“It’s a balance of wanting to go out there and be in midseason-form in front of the Major League staff, but understanding that that ’s unrealistic,” Gomber said. “The whole point of Spring Training is getting ready for the season. For me, I try to soak up as much as I can.”

The club will continue to meet from about 4 to 6 p.m.

“It really is the best way to end a day,” Harbin said. “Hanging out with these kids and catching fish.”

For the residents on River Grass Lane, in Winter Garden’s Covington Chase community, the tradition gets bigger each year.

The idea started in 2015, when neighbors Scott Egan and Jamie LoFiego collaborated for a twohome Christmas light show they debuted on Thanksgiving night.

The next year, there were six houses connected.

This year, even more homes joined the lights party, for a total of 10 homes participating in the holiday spectacular. Three more already have committed to joining in 2018.

Think Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights, for years on display at Disney’s Hollywood Studios — but on a smaller scale.

The entire program is turned on at Egan’s house. He and LoFiego created a syncing template and got to work on the programming.

Each house has one or more boxes, each with 16 channels and controlling 16 strands of lights.

“There’s a lot of planning; we plan all year,” he said. “How are things are to be networked, how are they going to be wired?”

The duo can program the system to play different songs on different nights.

LoFiego, who has a background in entertainment, said it’s fun to show off his skill-set and to see people enjoying it.

Their goal, the men said, is eventually to have everyone on the street participating in the lights show.

“That will draw lots of attention,” LoFiego said.

Egan estimates there is a minimum of 50,000 lights in this year’s display.
