The town of Windermere is being sued by a homeowner who believes the town’s recent roadwidening project on Park Avenue has resulted in repeated flooding in her home.

The home, which is located on Park Avenue, was purchased in June 2014 but only recently

started experiencing flooding following the completion of the town’s nearly $1 million project to enhance the Park Avenue corridor.

The intent of the road-widening project was to reduce traffic congestion during Windermere Elementary School’s drop-off and pick-up times. It included the construction of eastbound SEE TOWN PAGE 6

irst, a disclaimer: I have a deep appreciation for the circus arts that dates back nearly 20 years, when I took my first job with Observer Media Group in Sarasota. That Gulf Coast city boasts a storied relationship with the circus that started in 1927, when John Ringling made Sarasota the winter quarters of the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus.

In my early days as a reporter, I interviewed quite a few circus performers. Their lives, their passion and their drive never failed to fascinate me (not to mention the curious mysteries inherent to their chosen craft).

In his book “Outliers,” author Malcolm Gladwell posited famously that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master a craft. I find it absolutely incredible that someone — anyone — would devote that much time to skills that have no practical purpose. After all, why would you ever need to balance on a board teetering on the top of a basketball? When are you going to have to use archery skills to pop a balloon held in another person’s mouth? And really, who needs to juggle? Ever?

But then again, the whole

point of the circus is to provide a reprieve from the mundane.

You check your practicalities before entering the big top.

And within the tent’s red-andwhite-striped walls, the only thing that matters is your ability not to blink. You don’t want to miss anything.

Judging from the success of The Venardos Circus’ first stint in West Orange, it seems many of you share my love for this timeless escape. Several of the circus’ 15 performances sold out, including the one my family and I attended last week.

As soon as the first performer entered the ring, the purpose of all these practically “pointless” talents was clear. Our 2-yearold daughter Calliope (yes, so named after the musical instrument popularized by the circus) was mesmerized instantly. Her eyes sparkled with the reflection of the warm yellow bulbs strung along the walls as she watched an acrobat climb to the top of the tent using two draping silks.

“Uh-oh,” she said over and over again as she pointed. Then, when the performer returned safely to the ground, she giggled and beamed as the audience applauded. She was captivated.

For those 90 minutes, there were no worries, no bills to pay, no games of Fortnite. Mobile phones were used only to capture photos and videos of the performances as ringmaster Kevin Venardos shared with us the dream he started four years ago. The impossible was possible. Magic was real.

To The Venardos Circus: On behalf of the West Orange community, thank you for bringing your beautiful show to us.

In this day and age, with our society infected with forces that seek to divide us, your desire to bring people together, if only for 90 minutes at a time, is not only welcome but necessary.

Reading Reindeer celebrates 21 years The Observer Media Group-sponsored literacy drive has collected books for nearly 63,000 children in West Orange County.

There is no limit to the places one’s mind can go when reading books — Neverland, Narnia, the moon — and the opportunity to get lost in a story is to be treasured.

Books are important in a child’s life, yet there are children in West Orange County who don’t have their own book collections or someone ready to sit down and read to them or with them.

Observer Media Group’s Reading Reindeer is kicking off its 21st year of collecting and handing out new books to be given to needy children at Christmastime.

New books for children from infancy through middle school are being accepted for this annual literacy project. They are distributed to multiple organizations: Migrant & Homeless Early Education Program of Orange County Public Schools, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Winter Garden, and the Ocoee and Winter Garden police departments’ toy giveaway programs.

I

f you have a taste for tabletop gaming but need to expand your clan, you might want to make a quest out to visit a local group in Horizon West.

The Horizon West Board Game Group meets the first Thursday of every month at ScribbleSpace, 13790 Bridgewater Crossings Blvd., Suite 1080, and welcomes new players. The group also meets on other Thursdays throughout the month on a case-by-case basis.

From deck-builder games such as Dominion to classic games such as Life or Monopoly, the Horizon West Board Game Group offers something for everyone. Potential players interested in participating can join the group on Facebook to stay updated on game nights.

“The Board Game Group is open to anybody who would like to come,” said Andrew Young, cofounder of the group. “I had been in a board game group in Washington — where I had just move from about three months ago — and I wanted to get one started here. There are some other board game groups in the area, but they’re mostly closer to Orlando or Kissimmee.”

Because most of the nearby board game groups were located

in other towns, Young decided to form one closer to home. He reached out to neighbors and residents in other Horizon West neighborhoods through social media to gauge interest in forming the group. Neighbors responded positively to the idea, and shortly thereafter, Young got the ball — or in this case dice — rolling. He was even able to secure a venue to host the game nights.

“It started because I like to play board games, so I wanted to see if there were other people in the area who also like to play board games, and it seems like there are,” Young said. “Our Facebook has (more than 50) people.”

While reaching out to neighbors, Young was able to secure a venue to host game nights. ScribbleSpace owner Cynthia Dailey offered her business as a venue for game night — free of charge.

“She offered her space to allow us to use for the group,” Young said. “(We want to) try to build the community through another type of activity that could be offered.”

Dailey said offering her business to the Horizon West Board Game Group is just part of the ScribbleSpace goal of strengthening the Horizon West community.

“We provide the space to them at no cost as part of our goal at ScribbleSpace of catalyzing community offerings that Horizon West

doesn’t yet have,” Dailey said. “We want it to have ‘all the things’ to strengthen it as a community and help the vision the master plan intends come to life.”

Young said the group has played games such as Dominion, Splendor, Villainous, Builders of Blankenburg, The Godfather, Azul and Fluxx. Players are welcome to bring in whatever board or tabletop game they would like. Classic board games, collectible card games and other casual board games are welcome. With a wide variety of tabletop games available, players also will have opportunities to try new games.

“The board game industry has gone up significantly over the last couple of years because of things like Kickstarter enabling people to get their (board game) ideas out there,” Young said. “There are so many different board games are out there now that a lot of people don’t know about because they’re not advertised. They’re not sold at Target or Walmart or even on Amazon, but they’re out there. We just want to give people the opportunity to experience them.”

Investigators searching for suspects CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

According to Orange County Sheriff’s Office reports, a 39-year-old woman and her 8-year-old and 11-year-old sons were awoken by two male suspects armed with handguns and wearing masks that covered their faces.

The masked suspects identified themselves as police and demanded to know where the woman’s jewelry was located, deputies said. One of the suspects was wearing a lanyard that read “SWAT,” deputies added.

After the suspects found the

jewelry, they left the home, but no one saw how or in which direction, deputies said.

Deputies continue to search for the masked suspects, as well as the suspects from two previous armed home invasions that have occurred within a one-mile radius in the past month.

The first took place Tuesday, Oct. 23, in The Retreat at Windermere apartment complex off Ficquette Road. During that incident, two male roommates answered a knock at their door and three masked suspects barged in, demanding cash and drugs, according to an incident report.

A struggle ensued, and one of

the roommates, a 19-year-old man, was shot in the abdomen.

The suspects forced the two victims to lay down on the floor and then stole $500 in cash and a small jar containing cannabis, the report states.

In the second incident, at about 2:50 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, four suspects wearing masks, hoodies and gloves robbed a home on the 1300 block of Zori Lane. According to that incident report, a woman who lives in the home went outside to discard of trash in a recycle bin when she suddenly heard three to four car doors slam shut.

When she walked to the front of her home, she noticed a car

backed into her driveway, looked into her home from a front window and spotted four black men running inside her home from the back sliding-glass door.

One of the suspects saw her, pointed a gun at her and demanded her to get inside the home and show them where the safe was located. The woman’s daughter and grandson also were home during the robbery.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the home invasions are not related. Deputies continue to investigate the incidents. Anyone with information may contact the Sheriff’s Office or Crimeline at (407) 423-8477.

and westbound turn lanes into the school, sidewalks and a drainage system on the north side of Park Avenue. The project also pushed the sidewalk further back from the road and added in raised curbs.

Homeowner Yumi Frankhouser claims the Park Avenue project resulted in the diversion of stormwater onto her property and caused repeated flooding, according to a document addressed to the town of Windermere.

According to Frankhouser, the flooding began shortly after the completion of the project. Frankhouser provided a video and 24 photographs depicting the flooding in her home from August 2018.

Frankhouser is demanding reimbursement from the town for her out-of-pocket expenses. She said the continual flooding has eroded her yard, moved sediment onto the property and affected her septic tank. According to the Notice of Claim and Demand addressed to the town of Windermere, Frankhouser felt forced to purchase a pressure washer and have her septic tank professionally pumped 23 times from June to September at a cost of $6,000 because of the flooding.

But Windermere Town Manager Robert Smith said the town is not accepting or denying liability at this point.

“The claim is that the town’s stormwater runoff from the roadway is entering their property and causing flooding and harm to the property,” Smith said. “We’re not accepting or denying any liability at this point, but we have approved a project on the south side of Park Avenue to take care of any stormwater runoff on that roadway.”

During the Nov. 13 Windermere Town Council meeting, council members approved a $23,000 project regarding the engineering designs for drainage improvements and sidewalk construction on the south side of Park Avenue.

The project had been approved previously but needed to be approved again because of the pending litigation, Smith said.

The future project will replace about 480 feet of sidewalk and add about 180 feet of new sidewalk west of the Park Avenue/ Lake Butler Boulevard connector, according to contract documents. The drainage improvements should address the existing ponding issues on adjacent properties, according to the agenda.

But Smith also plans to discuss the flooding issue with Frankhouser and her attorney, he said.

“They just sent us the notice,” he said. “So now, we’re trying to get everyone together to talk about the issue, and what we can do to possibly correct it, and then we’ll go from there.”

Attention foodies: Four Seasons to host celebrity chef dinner Ten chefs will be featured at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at Walt Disney World’s fourth annual James Beard Foundation Celebrity Chef Tour Dinner Dec. 1.

If you consider yourself a foodie or a fine-dining aficionado, the Four Seasons Resort Orlando will be hosting a dining experience you won’t want to miss.

The five-diamond resort is hosting the fourth annual James Beard Foundation Celebrity Chef Tour Dinner at 6 p.m. Dec. 1.

The dinner will take place at the resort located in the Four Seasons Orlando at 10100 Dream Tree Blvd., Lake Buena Vista. Tickets are $235 per person and must be purchased in advance on the James Beard Foundation website.

“This is a really special occasion,” said Dana Berry, director of public relations and communications for the Four Seasons Resort Orlando. “It’s for somebody who is really passionate about food and wants to have an unforgettable culinary experience. This is the night for the foodies to come out.”

The James Beard Foundation Celebrity Chef Tour Dinner will feature 10 courses prepared by 10 different chefs. Diners will enjoy four appetizer stations, a fourcourse dinner with wine pairings and a two-course dessert.

“We have several of our chefs doing the appetizer station,” Berry said. “We have several of

the guest chefs serving the main courses. … And then we have two chefs doing a dessert combination — a dessert duo.”

Berry added the interaction between the chefs and guests makes the dining event unique.

“The chefs come and mix and mingle with the guests when they start serving the courses,” Berry said. “The chefs each come out and introduce their course, and they go table to table to talk to the guests. It’s pretty interactive, and it’s really fun. The guests are seated, but the chefs come out a lot.”

The dinner will start with a one-hour reception, during which diners will be served champagne and appetizers. Appetizers will be served buffet-style from four different stations, each featuring a different dish prepared by one of the 10 featured chefs.

A four-course dinner will come next, followed by a two-course dessert, Berry said.

“We’ll have an oyster bar station with a selection of different oysters (for one of the appetizers),” Berry said. “The (dinner) courses will be phased. They’ll start coming out slowly, and the chefs will come out and talk with guests about the courses and mix and mingle around the tables.

Going into its second year, the Windermere basketball program looks to continue its early success and become the area’s next power.

B

uilding a program from scratch is no easy feat.

There are issues of dealing with a new staff and new players — many of whom have never played together.

It takes most programs a few years to set their roots down and establish themselves, but at Windermere High, head coach Mark Griseck already has turned his second-year Wolverines team into a legitimate threat.

“It’s incredibly difficult,” Griseck said. “This is my first time starting a program, as many years as I’ve been doing this — and it’s been very rewarding. And I think the good part of it is that everything is new; whatever traditions you want to start, however you want to define your basketball program and your culture, you do that — you lay the foundation.”

Going into last year, to say there were no expectations — other than kids going out and having fun — is a pretty sizable understatement.

It makes sense when you think of all the unknowns that come with fielding a new team.

But for Griseck, the unknowns also were beneficial; the Wolver-

ines had the element of surprise working in their favor.

“The advantage we had (was that) I don’t think expectations were high from anybody outside of ourselves,” he said. “So we kind of were able to sneak up on some people, which that won’t be an advantage this year.”

That advantage, along with strong play across the roster, led the Wolverines to a 16-9 (5-3 in district) record in a year during which a group of high-school kids came together and played for one another.

And the scary part about this year’s team? It returns just about everyone — including players such as Dakota Rivers, Josh Colon, Trey Moss and Carter Zavada.

Rivers, a 6-foot-8 senior with a vast scoring range, will be the big man on campus thanks in part to his ability to rack up points.

Through 26 games last year, Dakota led the team with 16.6 points per game while picking up team highs in rebounds (355 total, or 13.7 rpg) and blocks (36). His numbers were a big part of what helped the Wolverines to such a strong first season, Griseck said.

What inspired you to play basketball?

I was 8 years old when I started playing basketball. My dad introduced me to basketball, because he used to play all the time. I use to travel with him and watch his games, and I loved it.

What is your favorite thing about basketball?

I would have to say scoring. It feels good to score, because not only are you making it yourself out there and letting people notice you, but you’re also helping your teammates.

What is the most difficult thing about playing your sport?

Excelling while the pressure is on you. It’s hard when there is a lot of pressure on you.

What has been the biggest highlight moment for you playing basketball?

When I joined the varsity team in eighth grade, in the district finals and I got my first two points on varsity. I was so happy at that moment. I was like, “I did it! I got two points, and now it’s time to grind.”

“Trey is just a special young talent,” Griseck said. “He’s very coachable. He wants to be good, he doesn’t back down from challenges, and he’ll rise to the occasion. He’s a player who obviously loves the game.”

They fought and clawed for 12 games just to get to this point.

After getting past regional topdog Vero Beach in a 19-7 defensive battle last week, the Dr. Phillips Panthers found themselves pitted against the second-seeded Riverview Sarasota on a chilly night.

Much like last week, the game Friday, Nov. 23, saw an incredible defensive showing. This time, unfortunately, it was the Panthers (7-6, 4-0) who were on the wrong side as they fell 33-7 in the Class 8A, Region 2 final against the Rams (11-3, 5-1).

“I’m highly impressed and excited about what this team was able to do,” Panthers head coach Rodney Wells said. “At one point, we were 1-4 and everything was going wrong — playoff wasn’t even in the picture. So they turned that around and got here, to this point.”

The hardest thing to digest for Dr. Phillips is probably the fact that until this game, the Panthers had played well-executed football — especially as it related to winning the turnover battle.

During their slow start to the season, the Panthers were on the wrong side of the turnover ratio.

But as the season progressed, the Panthers went -12 over the second half of the season.

“We got about six or seven turnovers in the playoffs in two games, and then tonight, we give them the

ball four times and then let them block a punt,” Wells said. “When you play good teams, you can’t make mistakes. We’ve been playing mistake-free, and tonight we didn’t.”

Sans an early, 2-yard touchdown run by Japerri Powell in the first quarter, the Panthers’ offense stumbled its way to just 174 yards in the game.

But the turnovers really cost the Panthers. The Rams took advantage of every pick and fumble that they could get — grabbing a pick-six to open the second quarter. Two more picks, a botched punt and a fumble would lead to 27 points for the Rams, thanks to lapses by the Panthers’ offense and special teams.

The turnovers also left the Panthers’ defense in some tough spots. Despite that being the case, the Panthers stood their ground on several occasions inside their own 15, forcing Rams placekicker Dorian Hall to kick four field goals.

Defensively, the Panthers only gave up two touchdowns.

After the game Wells gathered his guys in a semicircle to congratulate them on another strong year.

For the outgoing seniors, Wells reminded them of the history they played in the program. This year’s batch of seniors was the most successful in terms of playoffs, going 12-3 and winning the state title in 2017 and finishing runner-up in 2016.
