Boy Scouts with the Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently collected more than 375,000 pounds of non-perishable food donations for Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

— earmarking $100,000 toward improving enforcement technology and evaluating the city’s parking codes.

Following a parking study by consultants Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., Winter Park officials were told the city needs a second staff member to enforce parking codes along Park Avenue, because there is only one employee currently. The CRA Board instead took a different approach to fix the city’s perceived parking problems along the Park Avenue strip.

Board members reasoned improving the license plate scanning technology and revisiting the city’s parking codes was a better approach.

“I can’t support the additional personnel, because it’s just unfunded down the road,” Mayor and CRA Board Chair Steve Leary said.

“I’m not saying you have to do it with the one person – I’m saying I don’t want to spend CRA money on a person right now for a year to do this, because then it puts us in the same usurping business of robbing Peter to pay Paul,” Commissioner and CRA Board Member Sarah Sprinkel

That parking study period began this summer. KimleyHorn consultant Brett Wood said although there may not be a numbers-based lack of parking, there appears to be the perception of a parking problem, which is still damaging to the city because it affects the overall experience on Park Avenue and whether people visit.

“That’s not to say there isn’t a real parking problem during big events and peak conditions in the future that would necessitate something different, but we’re battling perception, reality, behavior and all of those types of things,” Wood said.

The city’s parking situation led Kimley-Horn to create what they call a problem statement — a summarization of what’s motivating a parking strategy.

That problem statement was divided into three parts: insufficient turnover of prime parking to support equitable access to downtown merchants; utilization of parking resources; and policies and practices do not align with community expectations.

The consultants also created a series of 12 different strategies that a municipality can choose

when looking to improve their parking situation. These ranged from wayfinding — giving residents and visitors an app or electronic sign that can potentially tell them where parking spots are located and how many — to modernizing parking enforcement — using license plate readers to swiftly carry out enforcement to promote compliance with signs and rules in place.

Other strategies included instituting a centralized valet system, building more parking areas, starting a downtown trolley system that transport residents to remote parking locations or simply doing nothing.

Of the 12 strategies, two satisfied all three criteria identified in the problem statement: improving the parking employee program and paid parking.

Improving the employee parking program would ensure that city and business employees would have their own place to park — moving them away from competing for public spaces with residents, Kimley-Horn Vice President Stephen Stansbery said.

A graduated fine structure will be brought back to the City Commission for consideration at a later date.

Held at Lake Lily Park, this year’s festival featured 115 artists from throughout the country.

Artists specializing in a variety of media — including fine crafts, sculpture, photography, pottery, painting, jewelry, metalwork and mixed media —displayed their creations.

Local artists in attendance from Winter Park included Renee Lewis, William Carlie, Patricia Karnes, James Whipple, John Whipple, Lynn Whipple, Stacy Barter, Robert Green and Steve Vaughn.

Cherie Bosela, of Orlando, spent 100 hours creating a mixed-media mosaic, titled ‘Verbatim,’ which depicts President Donald Trump. Bosela used glass, an American flag pin, ABC wooden blocks and a collage of Trump’s own words from speeches and tweets.

Choir fans, rejoice: The Messiah Choral Society will be conducting its annual performance of Handel’s Messiah Sunday, Nov. 26, at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The Winter Park-based nonprofit will sing the 18th-century oratorio written by the renowned German composer George Fredric Handel at the Bob Carr Theatre. The collection of choruses, arias and other musical numbers tells the story of the birth of Christ.

Although the Messiah Choral Society has dabbled with other productions — it sang at Avalon Aglow and at an Orlando retirement community last year — the sole purpose has been putting on a free performance of Handel’s Messiah every November for more than 40 years.

That suits society President Maggie Winter just fine.

“There’s just something about (Handel’s Messiah) when you’re singing it,” Winter said. “In this chaotic world, when you’re singing it, it brings such a sense of peace. You feel like everything is OK.” Handel’s Messiah is an extensive piece of work; It typically runs more than two-and-a-half hours — and that’s before a few chorus numbers are cut to save time. Winter believes its complexity is a challenge that draws singers to join the group.

She said the musical ensemble has more than 100 members who come from all walks of life.

Some are students in high school and college, while others have lived close to a century. They’re all united, though, in their passion for the oratorio.

“Some (members) drive two hours to rehearsal,” Winter said.

held in the Rollins College music building for 12 weeks in the fall.

Dr. John Sinclair, director of music at Rollins College, has been the society’s music director and conductor for 30 years.

“It’s like having a voice lesson all the time,” Winter said of Sinclair. “He’s a perfectionist.”

Winter, 67, moved from Connecticut to Orlando more than 25 years ago. Although this is her first year as the society president, she has been part of the crew for more than a decade. She spent three years as the group’s secretary before becoming vice president for three years.

“I grew up with a family that couldn’t get together without bursting into four-part harmony,” Winter said. “I was singing as soon as I could talk.”

Winter acquired a taste for classical music, particularly pieces from the Baroque era.

She believes singing that time period’s music is a challenge but one she enjoys.

Although Winter is a veteran Messiah member, she — like every other performer — still is trying to improve.

“As complicated as the music is, I keep striving to improve in my ability to sing it,” Winter said. “It’s not boring to sing it again. … I just try to learn a little more than I knew the year before. That’s what drives people to keep singing this piece.”

Rollins College hosted an evening of hope and fundraising on Friday, Nov. 17 as former Rollins College music student and “The Voice” Season 11 contestant Christian Cuevas played a concert benefiting Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

With family ties to Puerto Rico, Cuevas has been giving numerous benefit concerts to help those in need on the island.

Last week, he returned to Rollins for a concert in front of old friends and local residents.

“It was really cool to see some of my teachers and my old friends from around college and everything,” Cuevas said. “I have high hopes to hopefully come back and finish my studies and everything here at Rollins. This has been my only college and I’m happy to be back.”

Fanara’s appointment comes about nine months since OMG

purchased the Winter Park / Maitland Observer. Dawn Willis, publisher of OMG’s West Orange Times & Observer and Windermere Observer since 2014, also served as publisher of the Winter Park/Maitland Observer as it transitioned into an OMG publication.

“I give Dawn a lot of credit for guiding our transition in Winter Park while also overseeing our growth in West Orange County,” Walsh said. “She did a great job trying to be in three places at once. With Jackie’s appointment, Dawn will be able to refocus on our expansion in West Orange.”

Eng will continue leading the editorial staffs at all three newspapers.

Winter Park student removed after alleged video voyeurism

A Winter Park High School football player was removed from campus Thursday, Nov. 16, in the wake of allegations that he recorded video up four girls’ skirts with his phone at school.

The action from Orange County Public Schools took place about eight months after the original allegations first surfaced in March, when a Winter Park High School student discovered the studentathlete filming underneath her skirt during class, said Frank Hamner, an attorney representing the four victims and their families.

Until that point, the student accused of video voyeurism still roamed the same hallways as his alleged victims.

“This was a case from last school year that was handled consistent with our Code of Student Conduct,” said OCPS Media Relations Manager Lorena Hitchcock.

“While some of the media coverage is inaccurate, we are unable to comment (because of) to student privacy laws.”

Officials discovered instances of video voyeurism dating back to January on the student’s phone.

“My understanding of it from my end is there was a feeling on their part that right and wrong are indifferent,” Hamner said. “The matter was handled administratively through their discipline process, a punishment was handed down — we don’t think it was the right punishment — and they felt it would be, for lack of a better term, double jeopardy to subject him to more punishment.”

The student’s removal from the school didn’t stop him from participating with the school’s football team at Showalter Field last Friday.

“The families’ goal was twofold: No. 1, get the victimizer away from the victims,” Hamner said.

“Get this young man out of daily contact with these young ladies, that was number one. No. 2, was to hope that somehow — through his parents or some other means — that he gets some help.

“With the football thing, in a perfect world, he’d sever all ties with Winter Park High School, but there are rules and regulations and things that allow him to play sports even if he was being homeschooled or virtual-schooled,” he said. “It became a question of how far we want to push.”

The student faces four misdemeanor counts of video voyeurism, and has a court date set for Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018. He will complete this semester at Winter Park High School remotely until the Christmas break before potentially switching to a virtual school, Hamner said.

The evening event raised money for the New Hope for Kids foundation, which is helping 10-year-old Hannah Harger. Hannah has bilateral kidney cancer, and her treatments last year took a lot of her school time. The foundation is helping build a study room for Hannah to catch up and learn while she’s at home.

Attendees donated to the cause and bid on jewelry and other gifts in the silent auction. Hula dancers swayed to ukelele music later in the night. The Winter Park Land Company is continuing to accept donations for Hannah’s study room.

Josh Garrick, a West Orange resident, is a fine-art photographer, writer and curator. He holds a master’s degree in fine arts from Columbia University.

You throw a few punches and you get punched right back.

By the end of the night, it’s all about who is left standing.

In the coverage area for this paper, only the Wildcats of Winter Park High managed to survive the blows of playoff football, while Bishop Moore and Edgewater stumbled.

Although Edgewater (9-3, 5-0) had a miraculous turnaround this season, the Eagles couldn’t get past Fleming Island (11-2, 2-2) as they fell 23-7 in the Class 7A regional semifinals.

Bishop Moore (9-3, 3-1) was handed the same fate in the Class 5A regional semis, as they were ousted in a 56-27 blowout to American Heritage (12-0, 5-0).

Thanks to some perseverance, big plays and a career night for receiver Brian Gomez, the Wildcats (12-0, 4-0) were able to withstand a powerful Apopka offense as they knocked off the Blue Darters (10-4, 1-2) in a 34-27 win in the regional semifinal Nov. 17 at Showalter.

so it takes a while to really get the flow of what they’re doing,” said Wildcats head coach Tim Shifflet on the Blue Darters’ single wing offense. “And we’ve been a great second half team all year — again, we proved it tonight. The kids stepped up, finally got some stops there the second half, and our offense was really clicking so I knew if we could get some stops, we’d have some shots.”

The biggest story of the night came from an insane night from Gomez, who scored a total of five touchdowns — one rushing and four receiving. Gomez finished with 263 total yards of offense (148 receiving and 108 rushing).

The game went back and forth all night before quarterback Cameron Legree found Lopez again for a 40-yard touchdown to put the nail into the Blue Darters’ coffin.

“All year long, you work to earn that right — getting that No. 1 seed in the region was huge, and this is where it starts to pay off,” Shifflet said. “Because we get to play at home again next week, and hopefully, we get the bounces our

direction, and we find a way to win.”

The Wildcats will have an even bigger game next week as they go into a rematch with a talented Wekiva (11-1, 3-0) team coming off a regional semifinal win over Boone.

Earlier this season, the Wildcats and Mustangs butted heads in what would be a defensive struggle. The Wildcats pulled out a hard fought 10-6 win. The 10 points was the lowest offensive output so far this season for a Wildcats team that has averaged a little more than 34 points per game.

The rematch will pit together two strong offenses, with the Mustangs averaging 33-point per game. Turnovers and defensive stops could prove to be gamechangers.

Friday night’s game is a 7:30 p.m. start time at Showalter, with the winner moving on through to the state semifinal Dec. 1.

Kicking OFF A NEW Season!

There’s no more difficult a way to end the season than falling in the title game.

Unfortunately for Bishop Moore, that’s exactly how the 2017 season came to a close on Saturday, Nov. 18, in a hardfought 3-2 loss to Ponte Vedra.

The game was a rematch from last year’s state finals, but unlike the 3-0 drubbing of the Sharks, the Hornets fell just short of attaining their third straight state title.

“Ponte Vedra was a very good team, and they were able to get us out of system a lot with their aggressive serving,” head coach Tanya Jarvis said. “It was a close match in sets — in one, three, and five they were just able to pull it out.”

The Sharks (25-5, 8-0) managed to slip by in those sets 26-24, 25-23 and 15-14 in the final round, but when the Hornets (23-8, 4-0) were on, they put in work.

In sets two and four, the Hornets crushed the Sharks 25-13 and 25-14, but winning backto-back sets proved to be too much as they finished just a few points shy of the title.

The loss was an encapsulation of a long season that, despite winning more than 20 games, has been one of the toughest the Hornets have had. Adversity set in early, even before the season even started, when three rising seniors decided to leave the team and switch their attention to training for club volleyball.

The combination between the loss of those players, all starters, and the fresh faces of eight newcomers to the varsity team, the Hornets were left to overcome uncharacteristic struggles.

WILDCATS RACE TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

he Winter Park High School girls cross-country team recently captured the 4A State Championship. This is the sixth state championship for the program and the third in the last four years.

In the last five years, the girls have finished either first or second. They won state in 2014 and 2015 previously.

Rafaella Gibbons led her team a time of 18:22.56, ranking fourth overall in the tournament.

In the first eight games the Hornets started off in solid shape, going 8-0 with no issues despite the preseason offsets. In the next five games, the Hornets hit a hard skid as they went 1-4 against a tough slate of opponents.

The Hornets made a solid recovery over the course of the rest of the season, going 10-3 with wins over Hagerty (21-3, 9-0) and Winter Park (23-7, 7-0). .

A large part of that success and fortitude during the season came from senior trio Claire Meier, Cameron Scheitzach and Marlie Monserez.

Meier, a middle blocker, led the team in total blocks with 35, while picking up a second best 201 kills for the season. The senior also had 187 digs and 16 aces.

Back at the setter position, Scheitzach led the Hornets with 477 assists on 1,312 ball-handling attempts. She also managed a team third-best in digs (215) while snagging 15 blocks and a secondbest in aces (46).

Alongside Scheitzach at the setter position, Monserez played a pivotal role for the Hornets, as she led the team in kills (274) and was

tied for third on the team with 18 blocks.

Although the three will be going on to continue their play at the college level, there still will be some talent going forward.

One notable player throughout the 2017 campaign was junior libero Arianna Arjomand, who led the team in both digs (493) and assists (51) this season.

Jarvis will look to her rising players to follow in the footsteps of their former leaders.

“One of the really cool things about playing a high school sport is these girls that didn’t get a lot of play time, or no play time at all, we were able to fill with experience from seniors that are leaving,” Jarvis said.
