City Commissioner Carolyn Cooper announced recently her campaign for re-election to Seat 3. She hopes to continue her leadership in Winter Park until she terms out in March 2022.

A Winter Park home constructed in the 1880s recently received new heart pine flooring that harkens back to the old logging industry.

A

historic home in Winter Park is undergoing a special renovation project — one that’s bringing back the home’s charming character.

The home at 1300 Summerland Ave. was built in the 1880s, making it one of the oldest homes in the city. When a water leak damaged the kitchen and much of the wood flooring, the homeowner contracted Alair Homes to repair the damage and also a bank of windows in the house.

“What makes this house unique is that the original part of the house — it’s been added onto twice — was built in the early 1880s,” Alair Homes Partner Daniel Kennerly said. “(The homeowner) has a map which shows seven original SEE PERFECT PAGE 4

begin at 3 p.m. on Lake Virginia, and the parade of holiday decorated boats will begin at 6 p.m., with public viewing areas on the Rollins Campus on the lake side of the Cornell Museum. The ski show viewing area will be at the ski ramp on the south side of the campus. Food and beverages will be served starting at 5:30 p.m.

Anyone with a boat permit is invited to enter their boats into the parade and can register at winterparkrotaryclub@gmail.com.

Members of the Winter Park Rotary Interact Club and the Rollins Rotaract Club will have decorating teams to work with boat owners to create Christmas and holiday-themed boats.

Boats will be judged in categories such as Best Christmas, Best Winter Park, Best Santa and Best Overall. Local businesses are invited to enter boats decorated to promote their business in a creative holiday theme. Gary Meloon of Mastercraft Boats and the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour donate the use of boats.

Cooper believes she is the best person for the job, and that’s a major part of what made her consider running once more, she said.

“I make a difference — that really is why,” Cooper said. “I have the skill set, and I’m really blessed to have that skill set. People trust me, and I’m really, really good at recognizing future risk.”

The commissioner first was elected in March 2010 and said she has prided herself on protecting what makes Winter Park special ever since. That often comes down to managing policy decisions to prevent future entitlements to developers, which helps to keep the scale of future development under control, she said. When a development or policy issues draws controversy, Cooper said she does her research and sees it through to the end — always keeping the best interests of residents in mind.

“I don’t consider that an insult when someone says, ‘Get out of the weeds,’” Cooper said. “Here’s the deal: Snakes are in the weeds, and if you don’t figure that out and draw a fence around that risk....”

Cooper said the strong attention to detail she brings to the commission comes from her years working for Lockheed Martin as the director of contracts, for which she negotiated half-billion-dollar deals and worked as one of only two women in the corporation who weren’t secretaries.

Park has made great improvements to city corridors such as Fairbanks Avenue, which has received new connections for sewer lines, street lighting and currently is undergoing the undergrounding process with its power lines to open up the skyline. The city has built a strong reserve fund and also held the line on the millage rate during Cooper’s almost nine years on the commission.

Last year, Winter Park acquired 55 acres of wetlands off Howell Branch Road, which will give residents a place to kayak and connect with nature.

Cooper said she has a lot to be proud of regarding her accomplishments for the city, but added

she takes the most satisfaction in the trust she has built with residents. The passion for doing right by the city may stem from her family’s military background.

“My father was a soldier, and he taught me and instilled in me this fearless commitment to home and family,” Cooper said. “That probably is what drives me a lot to protect the quality of life here.”

If elected, Cooper will be entering her fourth term, reaching the limit of service one can have as a commissioner. There still is work that needs to be done, such as acquiring the post office property that sits near Central Park, she said.

“I really want us to keep city

land (as city land) in the core of the city and expand and enhance that green space,” Cooper said. “For me, that’s critical.”

There also is the issue of Winter Park’s new library and event center, but when Cooper hears about the anticipated project, her mind goes back to the city-owned property where the current library stands — and what will become of it, she said.

“I want the city to continue to own and use the existing library property,” Cooper said. “For me, that’s the big picture.”

When all is said and done, Cooper wants to leave a legacy as a protector of Winter Park and the quality of life its residents enjoy, she said.

Let’s face it: It’s not easy getting into the Christmas spirit when it’s another sunny day in Florida.

But this year, Winter Park families won’t have to be dreaming of a white Christmas. It will be waiting for them in the middle of Central Park.

On Dec. 14 and 15, the city of Winter Park will host its inaugural Snow in the Park celebration — a chillier, more festive successor to the longstanding Winter Park ice-skating rink

event.

“We decided we wanted to try something that was a lot cooler,” said Kyle Dudgeon, assistant division director of Economic Development. “When the ice rink started, it was in the middle of the economic depression, so it was us wondering, ‘What can we do in the city to drive foot traffic and add value to get people downtown?’ That event was really successful, and after we got out of the recession and started having more and more special events, it got to the point where the goal of the ice rink had reached its limit.”

The event, organized by the Community Redevelopment Agency and sponsored by Florida Hospital, will invite kids of all ages to hit the West Meadow section of Central Park for a weekend of snowball fights, photos with Santa Claus and other adventures.

The standout feature in this year’s event is all the snow and ice.

Not only will Snow in the Park have 300 tons of snow pumped into the West Meadow, but also there will be a pair of 12-foot-tall ice slides full of snow and ice for kids to tube down. The entire event will have snow flurries falling from the sky to give Winter Park as close to a northern winter experience as possible.

Flurries are in the forecast for the city’s inaugural Snow in the Park celebration.

“The ice slide is definitely No. 1, and kids will actually be able to play with real snow,” Recreation & Family Services Manager Cathleen Daus said. “Which is probably something that lots of them haven’t seen … to be able to just walk downtown and be able to play with the snow for a weekend. ” Other features include a trackless miniature train that will transport kids to the different stations across the park where they can make arts and crafts, get airbrushed tattoos and even spend time with Santa Claus himself. They’ll be working with the Christmas elves — Parks and Recreation staffers who will commit to the bit by dressing like Santa’s helpers.

Work on Snow in the Park began in August, with staff drawing up plans and recruiting vendors.

houses in Winter Park in the mid1800s. This is one of those houses, and they all had names — this was called the Chubb House.”

The repair and renovation project included new solid-wood custom cabinets in the kitchen that stay true to the old design of the home. Work also was done on a laundry room and half-bath.

What made the project a true undertaking though was the heartwood pine flooring that had to be replaced.

“In rural areas, there’s still massive pine trees out there, but in the center of a pine tree, they have what’s called the heart of the tree,” Kennerly said. “It’s much harder and denser wood, because it’s obviously the oldest wood in the tree.

“In small trees it’s really tiny, but as you get into larger and larger trees, it gets bigger and bigger,” he said. “It’s really unique, because usually pine is a soft wood, but that heart in the center of a pine tree is really hard and dense, and it works really well for flooring. You just about can’t ruin it … because it’s been so compressed for years and years and years.”

Finding new 7-inch-wide planks of heartwood pine that were 14 feet long was a true challenge, because it takes an extremely large tree to produce, Kennerly said.

development for 100 years has made them harder to find.

“Something that was very easy to get at that time and wasn’t unique is now super unique,” Kennerly said.

Alair Homes enlisted the help of a special company that dredges old logs off the bottom of the St. Johns River that were left behind from the old logging industry in Florida.

“They have these logs that they’ve dredged that four or five of us couldn’t get our arms around,” he said. “They sell the wood and they cut it to order, so we had to order this wood to replace the wood in the floor there to match what was there. (The homeowner) didn’t want something new, she wanted it to match what the original floor was.”

Kennerly said the project is one he won’t soon forget.

“Both sides of my family actually moved to Florida in the 1870s and 1880s,” he said.“I’m a fifthgeneration Floridian, and it’s really neat to have an opportunity

to work on a home that potentially my great-great-grandfather could have walked around in. There just aren’t that many homes from that period in Florida left. Florida is a hard environment on buildings — especially wood buildings like

If you haven’t, or you’ve neglected picking up some holiday treats for your pets, you’re in luck. The Winter Park Lost Pets Foundation is hosting its first Pet Lovers Craft Fair Saturday, Nov. 24.

The fair, to be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the Wagging Willow dog-training store at 3756 Howell Branch Road, will have 10 to 15 Winter Park vendors and a number of creatives selling homemade gifts such as crafted jewelry, tree ornaments, stocking stuffers, and collars for dogs and cats.

“I think it’s so cool that when I put the word out and asked people if they were willing to sell something,” Lost Pets foundation co-founder Judy Charuhas said. “They said, ‘Oh my gosh, yes!’

“There are all these craft fairs and all these things that go around the holidays, but I’ve never seen one specifically with pet items,” she said. “It’s hard to put it into words.

It’s an emotional thing that everybody’s doing something to help us out, and we’re all helping each other out.”

The Lost Pets Foundation is an extension of WinterParkLostPets. com, a website for posting photos of local animals in the hopes they can be reunited with their owners.

The fair will be the result of the hard work of several different animal nonprofit organizations, all of which will receive part of the profits for their respective animaladvocacy initiatives. The Floridaand-Maine animal-rescue service Pixel Fund will be bringing several craft products to the festival. Greyhounds In Motion, a greyhoundadvocacy group, will be selling dog collars, as well as advocating for greyhound awareness and adoption following Florida’s greyhound-racing ban with Florida Amendment 13.

Wagging Willow also will be offering holiday photos of customers and their pets as part of a “Shop Local” initiative.

Charuhas said she has had the idea for the fair for some time. Because this is the first year that Winter Park Lost Pets will not be attending the Winter Park Christmas Parade, she decided it would be the perfect time to put in some effort and get the event off the ground.

It’s been a quick enterprise — work started on the fair in earnest in October. Charuhas hopes the fair will return next holiday season.

Another season of Winter Park Wildcat football is in the books.

The Wildcats’ season came to a conclusion on Friday, Nov. 16, with a 41-8 loss to Mandarin High School at Showalter Field in the regional semifinal game.

Mandarin overwhelmed Winter Park early and built a 27-0 lead in the first half. The Wildcats responded with a touchdown and some defensive stops in the latter part of the game, but it wasn’t

It wasn’t the ending Winter Park wanted, but it still was a season of which assistant coach Johnny Miller said the team should be proud. The Wildcats finished with a record of 10-2, losing only one game during the regular season en route to a district championship.

“We really accomplished a lot,” he said. “I think from where we started off to where we got, we got better and better as the season went on. When you get into the playoffs, everybody’s really, really good.

(Mandarin) is a very good team.

They outplayed us tonight. The kids … give them kudos because they went out fighting. I’m proud of them.”

Winter Park’s seniors led the way for a strong season. On offense, Tyrone Davis grabbed 536 rushing yards with 92 carries, and Peter Hayes-Patrick collected 810 yards with 122 carries.

However, it was a junior who ruled the receiving stats. Marcus Clarke amassed 979 receiving yards on 55 receptions and also led the team in touchdowns with 25.

On defense, senior JJ ValleSmith led the team with 82 tackles during the season. Behind him was senior Nicholas Jackson with 64 tackles and a team-leading 14 sacks for 98 yards.

Seniors Ben Hughes, Gabe Rivera and Darrius Young all picked up more than 50 tackles during the season.

great seniors,” he said. “Whenever I got down, they picked me up and vice versa. We just had great senior leadership. They showed their true colors. … We faced a lot of adversity this year. We had kids (who) couldn’t play until the middle of the year, and we played through a lot this year with injuries and everything. It wasn’t the ending that we wanted, but we fought hard. … I want to thank Jesus for everything that he’s done. I feel we were blessed to a have this good of a season, for sure.”

The hard work for next year starts now, Miller said.

“Hopefully, these kids will learn from what we need to do — they need to get ready to get into the weight room,” Miller said.

“We’ll start getting ready and May is spring football, and we’ll see what happens when the season comes.”

defense, with seven of the team’s 10 wins finishing with a lead of at least 30 points.

“You win with your seniors — your seniors as a whole — and I think that the group came around and got better and their leadership got us to where we were at,” Miller said. “It took the seniors to get us here.”

Winter Park faced its share of adversity during the season. The team lost starting quarterback Gino English to injury a few games into the season, but that gave junior Casey Case a chance to lead the team and make some plays.

Case racked up 1,164 passing yards through the season, with an average of 116 passing yards per game.

Case said it was hard to see the season end the way it did but pointed out the hard work of his teammates.

The riddle of steel Sculptor and Crealdé instructor David Cumbie uses welding and bronze casting to convey art.

David Cumbie calls it a “metamorphosis” — the way bronze, concrete and steel can tell a story once melted together. Clay is carefully sculpted, replicated with a mold and than filled with melted bronze to create an enduring likeness. Steel is cut down and reattached with a blowtorch, creating the armature that makes a statue stand upright for all to see.

From Cumbie’s studio at the Crealdé School of Art in Winter Park, the lifelong artist turns his

ideas into reality — and passes on the skills to students so they can do the same.

The art instructor and Chuluota resident has been teaching at Crealdé for about 37 years, giving classes on everything from clay sculpture and bronze casting to welding and mold-making.

Using a combination of those disciplines, students have created animal sculptures, figures of people, masks, wall pieces, kinetic sculptures, and practical items such as coffee tables and lamp stands.

“You work on it until you get it

right,” Cumbie said. “It’s a challenge — especially with something like art where you don’t aways know what the end result’s going to be. You’re in the creative process. It’s like an adventure.”

Cumbie has used bronze casting, sculpting and welding techniques to create outdoor multimedia sculptures, which have been displayed at Epcot and Orlando City Hall, among many other places.

It was his desire to build standing sculptures outside that drove him to pursue welding, which helps bring a piece together and come to life.

“When I decided to go outdoors building big things, I needed to weld a structure to support the pieces,” Cumbie said. “It’s multimedia, and welding is part of it.

It enables me to combine all the other materials.”

Case in point: a 14-foot-tall bronze sculpture that stands in Fort Pierce. The piece almost resembles a totem pole, made up of bronze slabs with images and faces all held together with a welded metal beam. The whole thing is assembled together in pieces, but it all weighs about two-and-a-half tons, Cumbie said.

“I start, and it just goes from one image to the other,” Cumbie said. “Some of it is symbolic.”

Welding sometimes even takes the center stage, with some sculptures completely made of

connected steel, Cumbie said.

“I just recently showed a series of welded trees at an exhibit,” Cumbie said. “I have a lot of fun with it.”

Cumbie has been interested in art for as long as he can remember. At age 5, he was given pencils and paper to draw with by his two older sisters. Cumbie was introduced to the craft of cutting steel with a blowtorch reaching 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit by his father, who worked in machine manufacturing.

Cumbie teaches welding at various workshops open for enrollment, and students can learn the basics of lighting the blowtorch, cutting steel and creating their own sculptures.

Crealdé students recently gained access to a new art form a few weeks ago: blacksmithing, which Cumbie said will hopefully be expanded in the next year.

Winter Park City Commission ers are pondering their approach to medical marijuana dispensaries in the wake of Gov. Rick Scott signing the medical marijuana bill into law last week.

City Attorney Kurt Ardaman gave the City Commission an idea of what’s next for the city of Winter Park during their meeting on Monday. The state legislation on medical marijuana preempts any local regulations in place, but

does give cities the opportunity to ban dispensaries if they choose to do so, he said.

Unless the facilities are banned outright though, the city has no control over where the dispensaries go or how many of them
