11.20.25 Holiday Gift Guide

Page 1

Make the 2025 holiday season one to remember

ur son is a senior in high school this year, which means my wife and I are acutely aware of all the “lasts.” This hit me in October, when, on our annual family trip to Blue Ridge, Georgia, I realized it might be the last fall trip with all five of us.

And so yes, even though he’s 17 and taller than Santa Claus, we have just one more opportunity to sit him up on the Big Guy’s lap for one more embarrasing photo. I booked our time slot as soon as they became availabile.

I also pulled our Christmas tree from its garage hibernation just days after taking down our Halloween inflatables. It’s twinkling in our front room as I type.

Oh yes, we’re ready to make the most of this holiday season.

In that same spirit, the Observer is ushering in the season with our 2025 Holiday Gift Guide — our handbook for the holiday season!

Yes, it’s a week before Black Friday, and that’s by design!

This year, we’re decking the halls by showing off many of our awesome hyperlocal businesses and their incredible offerings in West Orange’s official “wish book.”

This guide is chock full of gift ideas for every person on your list.

Better yet: They’re all available at a shop in our community owned by someone who might see at Publix from time to time.

In addition to our physical wish book, we again have partnered

with these merchants to create our online O-Mazing Holiday Gift Guide! Make sure you check it out at OrangeObserver.com!

So this season, we’re inviting you to get off your couch and into the stores. It’s so much more personal — and fun — than clicking “buy now” and then watching the Amazing delivery driver stack carboard boxes — Tetris style —on your front porch.

HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS

Of course, our guide also includes all the information you need to make your 2025 holiday season one to remember.

West Orange residents are blessed to live in a community teeming with Christmas cheer. Check out our exclusive calendar of holiday events (pages 26-29) and make your plans for some Christmas fun with friends and family. There are so many events right here in our communities — Winter Garden, Ocoee, Windermere, Horizon West, Dr. Phillips, Oakland and Gotha. And if that weren’t enough, we even included some favorites from throughout Central Florida.

If you’re sending gifts to loved ones across the state, the country or the world, we have shipping deadline information (page 5). And whether you’re traveling or staying home for the holidays, be sure to check out some safety tips courtesy of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (page 36).

Finally, we invite you to learn about many of the local non-profit organizations that do such important work in our community (page 10). We can’t think of a better way to celebrate the season of giving than supporting one of these worthy operations.

From all of us at the Observer: We wish you a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Cowboy Adventure Park

Throughout most of the year, we crave something new on the silver screen. We count down the days to the next blockbuster release and sometimes even buy tickets for a midnight screening so we can be the first to experience the latest Hollywood has to offer.

However, the holidays are different. We crave cinematic comfort food — films that we’ve seen dozens of times while sipping hot cocoa and eating gingerbread cookies.

Here are the top 10 highestgrossing holiday films, according to data from Box Office Mojo. And whether you’ve never seen them or have seen them hundreds of times, now is the time of year to cue them up, curl up on the couch and indulge in a little holiday cheer.

HOLIDAY TIPS TO STAY SAFE

In the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it is easy to get caught up in the magic of the season — and perhaps forget some of the safety precautions you usually take.

Thankfully, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office offers a variety of tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this holidsay season. Furthermore, the agency also provides free, confidential Residential Security Surveys. To schedule one, call the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, (407) 254-7380.

FIRE

SAFETY TIPS

Holiday decorations — while beautiful — can pose increased risk of fire in your home. Here are some tips to minimize

When purchasing a live tree, check for freshness; a fresh tree is less of a fire hazard. The tree should be green, needles are hard to pull from branches and when bent between your fingers, needles do not break. The trunk butt should be sticky with resin, and when tapped on the ground, the tree should not lose many needles.

Cut a few inches off the trunk of your tree to expose the fresh wood. This allows for better water absorption and will help to keep your tree from drying out and becoming a fire hazard. When setting up a tree at home, place it away from fireplaces, radiators or portable heaters. Place the tree out of the way of traffic, and don’t allow it to block doorways. Keep the stand filled with water; heated rooms can dry live trees out rapidly.

CANDLES

Stay in the same room with burning candles; never leave them burning unattended. Keep candles away from things that can burn. Place candles out of reach of children and pets.

Keep wicks trimmed to one quarter

Remember to make sure you have working smoke alarms.

LIGHTS

n Before using lights outdoors, check labels to be sure they have been certified for outdoor use.

n To hold lights in place, string them through hooks or insulated staples, not nails or tacks. Never pull or tug lights to remove them.

n Check all tree lights — even if you’ve just purchased them — before hanging them on your tree. Make sure all the bulbs work and that there are no frayed wires, broken sockets or loose connections.

n Plug all outdoor electric decorations into circuits with ground fault circuit interrupters to avoid potential shocks.

n Turn off all lights when you go to bed or leave the house. The lights could short out and start a fire.

DECORATIONS

n Never use lighted candles on a tree or near other evergreens.

n In homes with small children, take special care to avoid decorations that are sharp or breakable; keep trimmings with small removable parts out of the reach of children to avoid the child swallowing or inhaling small pieces. Avoid trimmings that resemble candy or food that may tempt a child to eat them.

n Remove all wrapping papers, bags, paper, ribbons and bows from tree and fireplace areas after gifts are opened. These items can pose suffocation and choking hazards to a small child, or can cause a fire if near flame.

TRAVEL TIPS

For those who may be traveling this holiday season, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office offers tips to reduce the possibility of your home being burglarized or vandalized while you are away.

A vacant home — or one that appears vacant — is an appealing target to a burglar. Although these steps will not make your home “burglar proof,” they can make it more “burglar resistant.” Use it as a checklist prior to leaving.

A WEEK BEFORE YOU LEAVE

n Ask a neighbor to watch your home and provide them with emergency contact information.

n Arrange to have your mail held at the post office or have a trusted neighbor pick it up daily.

n Arrange to have your newspaper stopped or picked up by a neighbor.

n Make arrangements to have the lawn mowed while you’re away.

n Do not hide cash or jewelry in the home. Consider putting valuables in a safe deposit box.

n Make sure you have secured outside things such as bicycles and lawn items. Unsecured items are easy targets.

JUST BEFORE LEAVING

n Don’t advertise your trip on social media. That means waiting until you return to post photos or updates.

n Consider smart plugs to turn some of your lights on and off during the evening.

n Unplug all electrical appliances, such as the TVs, stereos, computers, toasters and microwaves to prevent damage during electrical storms.

n Have a friend park a vehicle in your driveway.

n Lock your garage door with a bar or padlock on the inside track to prevent anyone from forcing open the overhead door.

n Close all windows and sliding doors. Make sure locks are secure.

n Make sure the last person out of the house locks the door.

SHOPPING

n Stay alert and be aware of what’s going on around you.

n Park in a well lighted space, and be sure to lock the car, close the windows and hide shopping bags and gifts in the trunk.

n Avoid carrying large amounts of cash. Pay with card whenever possible.

GIANT RECREATION WORLD - WINTER GARDEN 13906 W. Colonial Dr. Winter Garden, FL 34787 407-656-6444 GiantRecreationWorld.com

n Don’t overburden yourself with packages. Be extra careful with purses and wallets. Carry a purse close to your body, not dangling by the straps. Put a wallet in an inside coat or front pants pocket.

n Shopping with kids? Teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated.
