ith space for only 12 seats when he opened in what used to be the old Gotha Country Store, Yellow Dog Eats owner Fish Morgan never expected his small, casual cafe to grow into the successful restaurant it has become.

Twenty years have now passed since Yellow Dog Eats — located at 1236 Hempel Avenue in Gotha — first opened for business in 1998.

Orange County leaders shared details about a new relief school in Southwest Orange County during a community meeting held Thursday, Nov. 8, at Dr. Phillips High School.

The site location is along the planned Daryl Carter Parkway extension to I-4 and is adjacent to two large, proposed development projects — the Kerina Parkside Planned Development and O-Town West project.

“This is just the very beginning of the process for this high school,” said District 4 School Board member Pam Gould. “It is scheduled to relieve two schools.

One is … Dr. Phillips High School and the other is Freedom High.”

Gould said decisions regarding academic programs, school colors, mascot, zoning and other details will be made later during the process.

“We’re verifying — literally — what the program of the high school will be,” said Lauren Roth, senior manager of facilities communications for Orange County Public Schools. “That doesn’t mean the academic program.

That means what’s going to be in this high school — (such as) classrooms, administration, fields, all that sort of thing.”

Roth added the next meeting will take place within a few months once the 30% of the designs are completed. At that point, a site plan, layout and other design details will be available.

David Torbert, of SchenkelShultz Architecture, gave a presentation about the school’s current design. He said the new school will be modeled after a prototype design similar to other local high-school designs, such as Windermere High, Oak Ridge High, West Orange High and

“A media center, cafeteria, things like computer labs and science labs will certainly be included in the new campus,” Torbert said. “You’ve got a full auditorium … as well as gymnasium that is just like ones that you see at like Windermere High School, Oak Ridge (High), Evans (High).”

Outdoor amenities include a greenhouse, shade house, athletic fields and an onsite football field and stadium. Security features for the new school include fencing; a secure courtyard design; a single, secure entry point; a security system with cameras; and card-reader entrance controls, Torbert said.

“Safety and security is something that OCPS takes very, very seriously,” Torbert said. “One of the key features that the highschool prototype has and many other school designs have today is a single, secure entry point. …

What that means is the school is designed so that during the drop-off and pick-up times, there are designated areas (for entry and exit), but during the rest of the school day, there is one single point where visitors can come in to that school. It’s at the front door. It’s where the administration and reception is so the activity of people coming and going is observed and monitored.”

he Rotary Club of Windermere sponsored a family-friendly Veterans Day celebration in downtown Windermere on Saturday, Nov. 10.

The celebration featured a guest speaker, live music, a bounce house, face painting, food and beverages.

The event’s guest speaker was Lt. Gen. Jay Montgomery Garner — a retired U.S Army lieutenant general who served two tours in Vietnam, led two air-defense units in Germany and helped develop the Patriot missile system and commanded missile batteries during the Gulf War. Live music was provided by the Dixielandstyle band Gentleman of Jazz.

Bridgewater students embrace volunteerism The BRAVO Club is 100 students strong and is aimed at making a difference at the school and in the community.

Members of the BRAVO Club at Bridgewater Middle School are passionate about community service, and they act on that passion by devoting hundreds of volunteer hours to local nonprofit organizations.

“We try to make somebody smile,” said Tamara Zotti, PTSO vice president and BRAVO Club adviser.

The club name stands for Bobcats Reaching Available Volunteer Opportunities, and these students are making the most of every opportunity that comes their way.

“It’s a group of students and their parents who must have a passion to do community out-

reach, to volunteer to the school and make a difference and go out in the community and make a difference,” Zotti said. “These are our future leaders.”

Members receive a club T-shirt, donated through a local sponsor.

Zotti calls them entrepreneurs and is proud of their impact on the community.

A clothing drive last month brought in more than 4,000 pounds of clothes and linens and netted more than $800 for the club. Students collected the items and filled trailers that were going to be sent to either hurricanestricken areas or third-world countries, Zotti said.

Of the money raised, $500 was split among Miles to Go, Matthew’s Hope, Orlando Rescue Mission and Greyson’s Project,

“The wonderful thing about this club is the student doesn’t have to participate in all events,” Zotti said. “They can participate in what they are connected with.”

The volunteer hours donated by the students count toward requirements for BETA Club and National Junior Honor Society. At least half of the club members are in BETA, NJHS or Student Government, Zotti said.

“They just want to do good,” she said. “I’m just very passionate about these kids and how excited they get knowing they’re helping someone else. Their little piece of kindness is really going to affect someone else in the long run. …

They want to be generous, to be kind, just be good kids.”

BRAVO Club is open to all grades at Bridgewater, and membership is offered to anyone who has a heart for volunteering. There are about 100 students involved in the club currently, although not

everyone participates in every event.

“I might not see a kid for seven volunteer opportunities, and then one might come along that touches them and they want to help,” Zotti said.

Her goal this year is to spruce up the landscaping in front of the school, which is a clean slate after all the dead bushes were removed.

Zotti reached out to landscaping companies and received several responses; one is donating toward the project and another is offering planting and design suggestions.

Mulch will define the landscaped areas.

This project is being funded by donations from the community and money the club members raise.

“These students have the heart to help, and I am happy to be an adviser for them,” Zotti said.

as well as funds established for three Bridgewater Middle projects: landscaping, new water fountains and personal hygiene items for the nurse’s station.

Club members collected 201 pounds of Halloween candy that were taken to Dr. William Fravel’s office to be donated to Soldier’s Angels. They spent a recent weekend pulling weeds and vines from a pasture at DreamCatchers Horse Ranch.

They participated in Random Acts of Kindness Week, writing notes, messages, chalk drawings and more to encourage their classmates to extend kindness beyond just that week. They cleaned pantry shelves and washed vehicles at Matthew’s Hope.

The teachers have benefited, too, from the club’s activities. This year, BRAVO students performed makeovers on three teachers’ lounges by soliciting furniture donations.

ebrate its 20th anniversary with a party Saturday, Nov. 10, and even received a visit from Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, who announced the restaurant will be the first in Orange County to receive a permit allowing customers to dine with their dogs in outdoor-seating areas.

After purchasing the property and investing in a few renovations, the Morgan family converted the former country store into a small café and antique/interior décor shop called Lee Morgan Inc. But as the popularity of Morgan’s restaurant grew, so did the need to expand. Morgan even opened a second location in New Smyrna Beach four years ago.

“At first, it was mixture of antiques and gifts, and then it also had my cafe,” Morgan said, recalling Yellow Dog’s early days.

“Slowly but surely, as I grew the restaurant, I kept going, ‘Hey, we need some more seats,’ and so we would take something out, and now we’re at about 75 seats.”

Morgan, a Windermere native who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America in New York, initially operated his own café on Park Avenue in Winter Park in a leased space. The business quickly outgrew the small space, and he decided to move his gourmet sandwich shop to Gotha when the opportunity arose.

“After I graduated in ‘94, I decided I wanted to do something small, so I opened up on Park Avenue in Winter Park in ‘95,” he said. “I loved it. It was a little tiny store, and it had standing-roomonly inside and a little deck out back where you could sit. I was there for about two years. And then my parents ran into (Realtor) Suzi Karr, and that’s when I moved out here.”

urban vibe, he said. But Morgan was hopeful it would all work out.

“When I first moved out here, especially after having been located on Park Avenue, people thought it was insane, because Gotha was still seen as the country,” Morgan said. “It was a big difference, for sure, but I grew up in Windermere, and I just had faith in the customer, and I always was sincere about what I was doing. I didn’t really think about making

money at the time — I just loved doing what I was doing.”

GROWING IN GOTHA

Although the restaurant’s unique name, Yellow Dog Eats, wasn’t Morgan’s first choice because he feared people would think he was selling dog food, it eventually grew on him, he said.

The idea of the name stemmed from a combination of his love for dogs, a painting his family owned,

and their former golden retriever, Scarlett.

“I named the place Yellow Dog Eats because my parents are both very artistic people, and they collect artwork, so we had this abstract painting of a yellow dog that we loved,” he said. “And we also had a golden retriever named Scarlet. And so it became the dog on our logo, because we bought the rights from the artist. Now it seems so normal, but 20 years ago, there weren’t a lot of places that had such obscure names like that.”

Despite the obscure name and residential location, his business thrived and even survived the recession and three fires — one of which forced him to close for nine months in 2008 to repair all the damage at a cost of $4,000. He credits much of the restaurant’s success to the community’s support for local business.

“We’ve been lucky to be in a residential community, and I’m thankful for having such great neighbors,” he said. “Everyone’s really been incredibly gracious to me and supportive, and that’s nice, because Orlando used to be very big on chain restaurants. But people really take the time now to support local businesses.”

pizza lovers can expect to start publishing their own personalized pizzas at The Pizza Press by early- to mid-2019.

Joseph Schumacher, marketing coordinator for The Pizza Press, said the first restaurant opened in July 2012 in Anaheim, California — right across the street from Disneyland. He added founder and CEO Dara Maleki once worked in an import-export business and was inspired to open the restaurant by a printing press he was transporting.

“Our theme is one thing that makes us unique — our theme is the printing press,” Schumacher said. “There’s kind of a pun at play as well, because we press out the pizza dough in a heated press as part of the process of making the pizzas.”

The Pizza Press also will offer an extensive selection of craft beers.

Additionally, pizza dough will be made fresh daily at the restaurant, which only adds to the customer experience, Schumacher said.

“We have the best craft-beer

selection around,” he said. “One of the major things people like about our pizza is the crust. You can definitely taste that it’s been made fresh that day. We also prepare a lot of the ingredients, toppings and things like that fresh in (the restaurant). … Everything is fresh and made to order.”

Customers can build — or “publish” — their own pizzas and choose from more than 30 different ingredients. With a wide variety of ingredients and the ability to accommodate different dietary needs, The Pizza Press offers something for everyone, Schumacher said.

“As we like to say, if (customers) want to ‘publish’ their own pizza, they have a choice of different base sauces — such as red sauce, white sauce, pink sauce (or) olive oil,” Schumacher said.

“They can choose the cheeses.

We have seven to nine different cheeses. Then they can choose their veggies and meats as well if they want any. We also are very adaptive to people’s dietary concerns. If they’re gluten-free, we have gluten-free crusts available.

… We have vegetarian and vegan options. We have vegan cheese.”

In addition to personalized pizzas, customers can order from a selection of signature pizzas.

Playing off the printing press theme, menu items at The Pizza Press are named after newspapers.

“We name our pizzas after newspapers — not specific ones but common names for newspapers like ‘The Times,’ ‘The Tribune,’ and things like that,” Schumacher said. “Also, with the décor, we have canvases that show the process of newspapers being printed and some of our visuals in the restaurant have a similar visual appearance to a newspaper as well. Some of the wallpaper has old newspaper clips on them.”

Although the restaurant doesn’t handle delivery in-house, The Pizza Press partners with companies such as DoorDash and Uber Eats for customers who crave personalized, published pizzas from home. The Pizza Press has more than 30 different locations nationwide and currently has a location in Celebration.

Patients undergoing surgery at Health Central Hospital receive a positive boost in the form of a rock painted with inspirational healing words or a positive image.

The Health Central Hospital surgical team used to give patients a thank-you note as part of their post-operation discharge packet.

The card read, “Thank you for choosing us,” said Teri Collard, the Ocoee hospital’s supervisor of surgery.

But the message didn’t seem appropriate for some patients — such as those who had just had a mastectomy or miscarriage.

“We knew we needed to do something else,” Collard said.

The hospital’s patient-experience team brainstormed different ideas for fostering a connection with the patients on a more personal level.

“Hope is the only emotion stronger than fear,” Collard said.

“We kept coming back to that. …

There’s healing in staying positive.

We wanted to do something with hope.”

The idea was cemented when Collard was in church one day and a quote by Dr. Dale Archer popped

It read: “If I could find a way to package and dispense hope, I would have a pill more powerful than any antidepressant on the market. Hope is often the only thing between man and the abyss.

As long as a patient, individual or victim has hope, they can recover from it.”

The solution was to dispense hope, Collard said.

They considered armbands and lapel pins before deciding on Hope Rocks.

“I not only wanted to inspire hope with the patients, but I wanted to inspire empathy with the employees,” Collard said.

ing event at her house with the surgical team and set out rocks, paint and paint brushes so everyone could start creating.

“When we start the event … I say, ‘What would you (as the patient) want to hear? If you’re the person here who just had a mastectomy, or had a miscarriage, what would be helpful to you?’” Collard said.

“And they just went at it. There were no limits to what they could paint. Some are female-oriented, male-oriented; some have scripture.”

When she opened the painting project to the entire hospital staff, she received enough inspirational rocks to fill a large bucket, which was donated to the new OrlandoHealth UF Health Cancer Center facility on campus.

Each rock is placed in a small burlap bag and given to the patients.

Orlando Health does not fund the project. Paint, rocks and money have been donated to keep Hope Rocks going.

Collard has challenged her surgical team and wants to see everyone handing out rocks. Cancer patients and those who have lost an unborn child will receive a rock, but it extends even further.

“If you’re talking to someone with a hard diagnosis … feel free to give them a rock,” Collard told her team. “If you hear someone having a hard time, maybe lost someone, give them a rock. And, sometimes, it might not be the patient who loves the rock, but the family member might love it.”

Collard said the surgical doctors, nurses and technicians are enjoying the responses from patients.”

“This is going that extra mile,” she said. “And it’s fun. And the team is now thinking, ‘Hey, maybe we can make ornaments for the patients.’”

While some students might groan at the idea of having to do a science fair project, some students relish the opportunity and even go on to compete in the big league.

In this case, ‘the big league’ is the 2018 National FFA Agriscience Fair — a highly competitive event hosted by the National FFA Organization.

The annual science fair competition invites student participants from grades seven through 12 who are FFA members and interested in the science and technology aspects of the agricultural industry to submit and present innovative research relating to agriculture.

Four such students from Windermere High School and SunRidge Middle School did just that and earned spots as finalists in the 2018 National FFA Agriscience Fair held in Indianapolis, Indiana, in late October.

The two-student team from Windermere High school – juniors Melody Raynor and Maria ReyesLeon – placed fifth in its respective division.

With the aim of contributing to the search for an alternative solution to decrease plastic pollution, the duo chose to focus its project

on the ability of a particular type of wax worm — known by the scientific name of Achroia Grissela — to affect the rate of degradation for certain types of plastic.

Raynor and Reyes-Leon said they believe their discovery is a start to future research that can lead to a decrease in the amount of plastic pollution in the environment.

“We discovered that plastic straws and Ziploc bags were effectively degraded, and a 75-degree environment was the best for prolonging the life of the worms,” they said. “These results are important for agriculture … because the numbers of plastic pollution are growing at rates which cannot be fixed by just recycling.”

Raynor said the opportunity to compete as a finalist in the fair was one she won’t soon forget.

“Being selected as a finalist for National Agriscience Fair gave me the most euphoric feeling in my life, just knowing what we are capable of doing because of our support systems just made me feel complete,” she said.

Reyes-Leon said she was happy to see all their hard work paid off.

“It was satisfying to win after all the hard work that we put into the project — not to mention the hard work of our adviser and parents,” Reyes-Leon said.

SUNRIDGE MIDDLE

The two-student team from SunRidge – Raquel Colby and Payton Moore – placed first in the Middle School division.

Colby and Moore collaborated on a scientific research project that analyzed consumer preferences on gluten-free alternatives, they said.

“When most people hear the word gluten-free, it’s almost as if the word has a negative connotation,” they said. “Most people would not buy gluten-free products unless they were glutenfree. With our project, we hoped to change gluten-free lives with alternatives that made them feel like they could eat baked goods that are almost more preferable in texture to an item with gluten.”

When their project won first place in the social science category in the middle school division, Moore, who is considering a future degree in veterinary science, said she couldn’t believe it.

“When our names were called as first place, I was starstruck and elated,” she said. “I couldn’t believe I had just won a national competition.”

Colby, who is considering a future career in marine biology, said the project itself taught her how to manage her time.

“I learned that it is very important to have a lot of time-management skills, because it became a struggle to find times where Payton and I were both available to work and distribute our project around the community,” she said.

Despite a recommendation for denial by the Orange County Planning and Zoning Commission, a developer seeking to build 113 homes on a piece of land near the Lakes of Windermere community in Horizon West is moving the project forward to the Orange County Commission.

Olympia hosts first Titan Turkey Trot W ith Thanksgiving around the corner, members of Olympia High’s National Honor Society decided to get festive and raise some funds for a local nonprofit. Students hosted the inaugural Titan Turkey Trot at the school’s track Friday, Nov. 9.

Many student organizations and clubs hosted games, crafts or photo opportunities — including facepainting, pie-throwing, a dunk tank and duck pond — and dressed up in the Thanksgiving spirit. Each activity cost $1 to participate in, or attendees could purchase a punch card for one round of each activity for $15. All proceeds will benefit Florida Impact.

Questions to Ask Before Selecting a Health Insurance Plan

By Melissa Kincaid, Florida Blue Center Director It’s the time of year when many of us select our health insurance plans for next year. Determining which plan is right for you and your family can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Here are some questions to ask to help you evaluate your options:

What is the total cost?

Sanitas also offers online and mobile chats with a doctor 24/7 at no additional charge for Florida Blue members.

The amount you pay each month is only one part of the total cost of a health plan. Make sure you understand how much you are responsible for paying when you need medical services. Do you have to meet a deductible before your insurance begins to pay? Do you have a copay or coinsurance that you’ll be responsible for when you go to the doctor or pharmacy?

Also, think about how frequently you may need medical services. Are you pretty healthy and only have an occasional minor illness or injury?

Or, do you have a condition such as diabetes or high blood pressure or long-term illness that may require more frequent medical care? This will help you put together an estimate of how much you’ll pay overall throughout the year.

Are my doctors and medications covered?

Confirm if any doctors you see are in the health plan’s network as well as which hospitals are in the network. If you see a doctor outside the network, you’ll end up paying more and may be responsible for the full amount. Also, if you take prescription medications on a regular basis, make sure they are covered by the plan and find out how much they’ll cost you.

Some Florida Blue plans also include a member rewards program where you can earn money to lower your monthly payments or receive gifts cards.

Where can I get help?

You’re not alone. Our staff at the Florida Blue Centers in Winter Park Villages and the Clermont Wal-Mart can walk you through your options, explain the total costs and help you apply for financial assistance.

Spreading its wings Dragonfly Studio 129 offers a space for budding theater artists to hone their craft. The Ocoee studio kicks off its cabaret series Friday.

said. “So it just made sense for me to say, ‘OK, yes, I’m making a teaching space, but let me also make it a performance space, because then I can rent it out to people who are trying to start new projects or trying to start their own new shows but can’t afford a huge 100-seat venue.’ Because, frankly, they’re likely not going to make the money back.

“So sometimes, they just don’t do it at all,” she said. “So

my heart’s aim is really about supporting the arts community and giving them a place to start.

That’s what I always tell people: This is your place to fail and then try again.”

The desire to have a place that serves as an incubator for creativity and training ground for young performers is why Pechacek decided to launch the upcoming cabaret series, all of which will be cast via open auditions, she said.

The title of the 2019 monthly cabaret series, produced by Ashley Van Kirk and Lily E. Garnett, is “Celebrate? Don’t Mind If I Do!” The cabarets, which will have a modern twist with a light-hearted tone, will be based on different national days and obscure holidays that many don’t often celebrate or pay attention to, Pechacek said.

“It’s going to be a very fresh take on what a cabaret is,” she said. “There’s this fresh, new idea of a cabaret that’s not so much about one individual, but about six or more performers singing about contemporary subjects more relevant to today’s society,” Pechacek said.

Fourteen performers will grace the stage this Friday for the first of the performances, titled “Life. A Cabaret!” One of those performers is Windermere resident Maddie Lane, 23, who will be singing “On My Own” from the Broadway musical “Les Misérables.”

ROBERT JOEL “BOB” GAINES JR. DIED THURSDAY, NOV. 8, 2018.

Robert Joel “Bob” Gaines Jr. died of cancer on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2018, at Orlando Health Hospital. He was born October 29, 1942, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. He was the son of Robert Joel Gaines and Edna Dillon Gaines.

He graduated from SS Simon and Jude School, Allentown Central Catholic High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Vanderbilt University. Bob was an accomplished musician, playing the trumpet professionally during his high school and college years.

While at Vanderbilt, he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity and the Vanderbilt Band. Bob was a public high school teacher in Tennessee when he left education and joined the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam conflict.

Following his service, he was employed with Allied Stores Corporation for 28 years. He retired from Steinbach Department Store in White Plains, New York, in 1996 and started his own business selling toys and collectibles.

He and his wife, Marlene O’Neill Gaines, resided in South Plainfield, New Jersey, for 38 years. Upon his wife’s death in 2012, he moved to Ocoee, Florida.

Bob is survived by his sister, Kathryn Gaines Welsh, and his brotherin-law, Daniel Patrick Welsh, who reside in Winter Garden, Florida. He was a wonderful uncle to two nieces, Wendy Anne Welsh, of Winter Springs, Florida, and Shearon Marie Welsh, of Orlando, Florida; and two nephews, Nicholas Patrick Welsh, of Kaiserslautern, Germany, and David Anthony Welsh, of Gotha, Florida.

He is also survived by an uncle, Edward Gerard Dillon, of Vacaville, California. Bob leaves behind his loving companion, Christine Dupont, of Sorrento, Florida.

A memorial celebration was at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, 428 E. Plant Street, Winter Garden FL, 34787. He will be interred with his wife at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends may make a donation to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) at 424 E. 92nd St., New York, NY 10128.

VIRGINIA E. CARRIS DIED SUNDAY, NOV. 4, 2018.

James Wesley Crockett Sr. passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, at the age of 83. He was born June 5, 1935, in McComas, West Virginia, to the late James Franklin Crockett and Mary Honaker Crockett.

James is predeceased by his sons, James Crockett Jr. and George Crockett; brothers, Leon Crockett and Leonard Crockett; and brother-in-law, Carl Baldwin.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Shirley Crockett; chil-

She was born March 27, 1935, in Clermont to the late Wyonda and Nita George. She married her husband of 65 years, Odis Vernon Mooty, and they raised three children, Sandra, Odis Jr. and Terri.

Delores devoted her life to serving the Lord and teaching her children to uphold those values.

Virginia and her first husband raised a family of three children.

In her late 40s, Virginia met and married the love of her life, Jerry Carris. Together, they enjoyed a wonderful life full of family, friends and devotion to each other. Virginia was a terrific Mother, a doting Grandmother, a loyal and devoted friend and a faithful servant for the Lord. Her faith was deep and unwavering. She loved to read, sew and clean house.

It couldn’t have gone much better for the Windermere Prep boys golf team out at Mission Inn Resort — El Campeon as it took out team after team to claim the Class 1A state championship.

Just like it had been all year, the

Lakers were fueled by great play from every member of the fiveman team consisting of Artem Yalovenko (146 overall, eighth place), Eric Berggren (147 overall, 10th place), Tiago Barni (148 overall, 14th place), Kenny Nguyen (155 overall, 28th place) and Danny Nguyen (161 overall, 48th place).

“It was a good team effort,” said

Lakers head coach Kyle McClone.

“It’s nice when everyone contributes, and they all knew if they played the way they were capable of we would be hard to beat.”

The Windermere boys golf team had a stellar outing at the Class 3A boys state tournament, thanks in part to the excellent shooting of Jonah Leach — whose 147 total for the two-day tourney landed him a seventh-place finish.

After winning a metro, district and regional title, sophomore Brendan Valdes, of the Dr. Phillips boys golf team, finished a team-best 11th at the boys golf state tournament at Mission Inn. Valdez shot a twoday total of 148.

At the swimming and diving state championships, Olympia senior Luke Carey took home a bronze medal and improved on his team record in the 50-free with a time of 20.98.

In Dr. Phillips’ second win of the girls weightlifting season, senior Naomi Alezi had herself a solid night against Windermere. Alezi tied her own record in the 199-pound class with a 150-pound bench press and also broke her own record in the clean-and-jerk (160 pounds) and total lift (310 pounds).

eep in the recesses of Dr. Phillips High, 27 girls take to the school’s weight room to train.

Angelle Domingue steps up to the deadlift platform, plants her feet with a sturdy confidence and grabs the bar that sits in front of her.

With one fell swoop, she dips her body as the bar flies and rests on her clavicle. Another swift motion sees the bar go above her head as she stands there, posing with fierce concentration before dropping the bar back to planet Earth.

The fitness and mental aspects of weightlifting require a lot, but for Domingue, stepping up to the bar is all in believing in yourself.

“Really, what goes through my mind is, ‘Just do it,’” Domingue said. “Don’t say you can’t do it, because sometimes, I touch weight that I’ve never touched before. I use to get scared, like, ‘No coach I can’t do it,’ and stuff like that, but then he has taught me to just do it.

“Now, at all my meets, I just do it,” she said. “I block out everything.”

Domingue — who lifts in the 169-pound weight class — originally played flag football before starting weightlifting last year after seeing her sister do it the year before.

Outside of seeing her sister participate in the sport, Domingue had no experience. But what a difference a year makes.

Like the other girls on the team, she started by working on technique in the bench and clean-andjerk — the two events in which high schools compete — by using just the bar. Now, she is benching 145 pounds and hitting 155 pounds in the clean-and-jerk.

In her first match of the year against Edgewater, Domingue shattered a school record for total lift as she hit 290 pounds — sneaking past Evita Gyimah’s 280-mark set in 2009.

Many of the girls on the team — such as Domingue and sisters Zamora and Jada St. Cyr — come from different sports, said second-year head coach Ben Sokolowsky.

“The bench press obviously comes a lot easier — most people have done at least a push up — but the clean-and-jerk requires a whole other level of commitment and dedication and a heck of a lot of technique,” Sokolowsky said.

“You have to spend a ton of time with no weights — PVC pipes or just the bar — so the technique is essential. A lot of them (who) are good at their sport are disciplined in those area — techniques and basic fundamentals.”

As he takes some time to hit the books and play about on the piano this offseason, the senior will look to take the baseball field as an outfielder for the school’s baseball team.

What has been your favorite thing about playing football at Windermere Prep?

It’s always been such a brotherhood. I’ve been blessed with all the brothers, coaches and mentors throughout the years — all the way back to sixth grade. They really shaped me and allowed me to do all that I do now.

When did you first get into football, and what got you into it?

I started playing flag football when I was — I don’t even remember — probably 6 or 7. It’s been part of me since before I can remember. I love it.

Is there one — or more — highlight moment(s) for you that really stands out?

Every day here is a highlight. I get to be with the people that I love, doing the things I love.

Have you always played at the linebacker position?

I’ve always been a linebacker.

I love linebacker — coming down and thumping people.

What’s some of the best advice that coach Jacob Doss has given you?

It’s always family — everything is about family. Play for family — the brothers to your left and right — you have to play for them. I live by that.

What’s the biggest challenge when it comes to playing football?

There hasn’t really been a challenge. I haven’t been injured too much — I mean, I have gone at it every day, loving it. And never really burned out. There’s no challenge when you love the sport so much.

than Barni, who, after shooting seven-over-par on the first day, came back with a vengeance on the second day to shoot a seasonand overall tourney-best of 69 (three under par). Barni’s strong second day was a huge part in the Lakers claiming the title seven strokes ahead of second-place finisher The First Academy.

The finish this year for the Lakers was a nice redemption from last year’s postseason appearance, during which a Windermere Prep player was disqualified because of signing an incorrect scorecard at the regional tournament.

“That was a tough pill to swallow,” McClone said. “But the way the kids came together, even after that, was incredible. I don’t think any of those people will make that mistake again. It’s a tough lesson, but that’s what golf is about.”

The good thing, however, is that tough ending to the year had the Lakers coming into the 2018 season even more focused.

At the beginning of the year, during team meetings, McClone and his players went over what it was they were trying to do with this fresh season. Priority No. 1: Win the state title.

“It puts a little more pressure on the team when they all know they can compete and play at the highest level,” McClone said.

Plans are to focus on academics and prepare for baseball season as well. I take it one day at a time — that’s how I go. I just make sure I do everything that I can, the best that I can and keep on moving.

When you get free time, what do you enjoy doing?

I like playing the piano whenever I get some free time. I’m obviously not the best — I like to think I’m decent — but it’s just kind of a contrasting thing from hitting people or hitting the baseball. It’s a lot of fun.

the platform. For Zamora, who was playing basketball when Sokolowsky noticed her, the pre-match routine became an important part of her adjustment to weightlifting.

“I also focus on what you have to do,” Zamora said. “Don’t always worry about the other numbers that everyone else has — worry about what you have.

Because if you’re stressed about other people’s numbers, ‘Oh I need to get to them,’ it’s going to mess you up, and your head is not going to be where it needs to be at.”

That mentality is exactly what Sokolowsky seeks in his athletes, and it’s what the Panthers will need to have another successful year.

“What motivates me is people’s stereotype that girls can’t be strong — I don’t want to be that female that can’t do nothing for myself,” Domingue said.

“I feel like girls can be strong too, in all aspects of life.”

How do you prepare for a game?

I don’t really have too many ceremonies. I’m just in there with my brothers, just having some fun and laughing it up, because I know any game could be my last. I just keep it simple and play football.

choice, and for good reason — because she is good. Earlier this year, Jada, a senior, finished third place in the 140-pound division, which helped the Panthers bring home the 2018 Florida girls wrestling state championships.

She was joined on the team by wrestling teammate Amani Guzman — who won the state title at 287 pounds.

The transition from wrestling to weightlifting was somewhat of a smooth transition for Jada, especially as it relates to the mental aspect between the two sports.

“Wrestling is so mental it’s ridiculous,” Jada said. “When you want to give up and you’re about to cave, you don’t — you push through and keep fighting.

For weightlifting, it was kind of the same thing, because I had to force myself (to say), ‘It’s OK, it’s just one more load.’… And in wrestling it was, ‘OK, first period is almost up,’ things like that.”

do what they set out to do is really special.”

With the goal set into place early, it was up to each player to put in work. Match after match, the Lakers plowed through opponents behind the team’s workhorses.

Berggren led the way for the Lakers and scored low of 35.6 throughout the season. He hit his nine-hole low at Bella Colina, where he shot six under par. Yalovenko followed suit with an impressive scoring average of 36.75.

Overall, McClone had nine players who managed season scoring averages in the 30s.

Although there are several highlight moments McClone could pick from this incredible year, for him, the best moments happened off the links.

“Honestly, as fun as it was to

win the tournament, just being around this group of guys was really special,” McClone said.

“Going to and from our matches, the kids playing music in the cars and really, genuinely having a good time together is what you want as a coach.”

Although the season for the Lakers just ended, McClone already is looking ahead to next season. The Lakers will have a young team, but will still have the talented Barni and Kenny Nguyen to lead the way.

“They’re both great players, and they’re both sophomores this year — they have a couple of years left being leaders,” McClone said. “We have a couple of younger players that are very good players, and if they grow a little bit and start hitting the ball a little farther, I think they’re going to be a huge asset.”

CLASS 3A, REGION 2: NO. 3 FATHER LOPEZ (9-2, 1-1) AT NO. 2 THE FIRST ACADEMY (8-1, 1-0) After enjoying a week off because of a firstround bye, the Royals will welcome third-seeded Father Lopez in the Region 2 semifinals Friday, Nov. 16. The Green Wave come into Friday’s matchup after sneaking by Melbourne Central Catholic in a 23-21 win, during which they came from behind late in the game. An aspect that makes the Green Wave such a good team is its balanced nature.

Defensively, this team is stellar — it has allowed only a little more than 11 points per game — while on offense the Green Wave is averaging 31 points per game. Luckily for the Royals, they have the highscoring offense (which averages about 40 points per game) and a solid defense to matchup with the Green Wave.

CLASS 8A, REGION 2: NO. 4 DR. PHILLIPS (6-5, 4-0) AT NO. 1 VERO BEACH (11-0, 3-0) Following their crazy overtime win over Centennial, the Panthers won’t have much time to rest as they travel to take on No. 1 Vero Beach on Friday night. This week’s matchup against the Indians will be the toughest task this year for the Panthers. The Indians are sitting at No. 8 overall in the state at 11-0 — and they’re there for good reason. Offensively and defensively, the Indians are about as efficient as a team can be — putting up around 38 points per game, while holding opposing teams to just 11 points per game.

The Indians are led by the trio of senior quarterback Nicholas Celidonio (2,751 yards and 28 touchdowns on 165-for-227 passing), running back Bryan Primus-Winston (853 yards and nine touchdowns on 141 carries) and receiver Demarcus Harris (1,463 yards and 16 touchdowns on 63 receptions). It’ll be a tall task for the Panthers, but the playoffs can be funny sometimes.

Windermere Prep stumbles in SSAC semifinal Although there are only a few positives to take from Saturday’s game, it’s not the end of the world, Doss said, especially for the seniors who have provided so much to the program.

“They’ve built a legacy that is second to none,” Doss said.

“You have kids that we’ve had since middle school, we’ve had some brand-new kids, but they feel like they’ve been here for 10 years. This is one of the most unique classes I’ve ever been around.”

s a sharp, cold wind blew around Deputy Scott Pine Community Park, Windermere Prep coach Jacob Doss gathered up his players.

The sounds of sniffles were audible as Doss gave a pep talk to his team following their 44-10 loss to Orlando Christian Prep in the SSAC semifinals Saturday, Nov. 10.

And the message he delivered was simple yet profound: There is more to life than just football.

“As we talked about, we can’t let that score define us,” Doss said after the game. “We had a lot of great things this season and beat a lot of good opponents. I’m so proud of these seniors — I have a class of about 13 seniors — that are some of the best I’ve been around.”

Despite going into the game with a perfect 9-0 record, the Lakers had issues against a high-powered Warriors (8-2, 1-0) offense that was looking for revenge following last year’s 49-48 loss to the Lakers in the 2017 SSAC quarterfinals.

Senior quarterback Connor Edel kicked off the offensive onslaught less than two minutes into the game with a 52-yard bomb to Jackevis Lovett. From there, things snowballed.

in part to running back Jalen Carr, whose speedy feet helped him rack up a staggering 254 rushing yards and three touchdowns of 55, 85 and 96 yards in the first two quarters. He finished with 345 total rushing yards and four touchdowns.

The Lakers’ defense simply did not have an answer for Carr, who often found pay dirt by hitting the defense for big gains on the outside.

To make matters worse for Windermere Prep, the Lakers went into the night’s game without starting quarterback Kai Patterson, who broke his wrist in last week’s win over Master’s Academy.

“Anytime you get behind to a great football team, you have

to start throwing the ball, and that was something that we weren’t really looking to do as much,” Doss said. “We wanted to control the ball and control the clock, and we got behind early, so it forced our hand a little bit.”

In his place, Doss started freshman Cole Navabi, who, while tossing three picks on the night, put up a decent showing as he totaled 245 passing yards and a single score (a 60-yard touchdown toss to Matthew Kane in the third quarter) on 11-of-22 passing.

Senior running back Naiji Allen (team-high 54-yards on 10 carries) and kicker Justin Kirtland (40-yard field goal) added to the Lakers offense.

In a game that couldn’t be decided in regulation, No. 4 Dr. Phillips (6-5, 4-0) picked up a wild 34-28 win in overtime to down the fifth-seeded Centennial Eagles (7-3, 2-1) In their first game of the Class 8A playoffs, the Panthers drove 86 yards in 14 plays on their first drive that was capped off by a touchdown by senior Japerri Powell to take the early lead.

Throughout the game, Powell enforced his will on the Eagles’ defense as he amassed 167 rushing yards on 31 carries while picking up four of the Panthers’ five touchdowns.

The lone touchdown Powell didn’t grab was a 47-yard picksix by Cameron Williams in the third quarter.

While the Panthers offense was clicking, so were the Eagles, and the two sides exchanged heavyweight blows quarter after quarter.

In the second quarter, the Eagles put up 17 points to take a 17-6 into halftime. In the third, the Panthers would respond with 19 points, before the heroics of kicker Riley Stephens drilled a 25-yard field goal with under a minute to go in the game.

The OT period started with Centennial getting the ball first, which ended in an utter disaster for the Eagles as DP sophomore linebacker Alberto Guzman picked off Eagles quarterback Blayne Watkins.

With victory in sight, Powell faked a run inside before cutting to the outside — where he trotted into the end zone for the game sealing 10-yard touchdown run.

The dramatic win will certainly go down in DP’s record books, but the journey isn’t over yet. The Panthers will head down south to take on the top-seeded Vero Beach (11-0, 3-0) at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16.
