Traffic-related data presented during a town of Windermere workshop caused much skepticism among town residents who attended the Oct. 30 meeting.

The workshop drew about 25 residents, many of whom signed up to speak during the workshop’s public comment session.

Residents and Town Council members gathered to hear the results of a traffic-count study conducted by Kimley-Horn and Associates Inc., as well as any recommendations KimleyHorn might offer to mitigate the cut-through traffic plaguing the town’s street network.

Windermere Garden Club hosting plant show “Remembering” is the theme of the horticulture specialty flower show.

The Windermere Garden Club is celebrating 62 years of existence with a two-day horticulture specialty flower show at Windermere Town Hall. The event is free and open to the community.

Club members will be submitting either a cutting or an actual plant and are eager to show off their hard work. Guests will be able to see groups of similar plants, such as orchids and hanging plants, and awards will be given to those that most closely match the species standards.

Six professionals from the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs will be judging all the par-

ticipants.

Educational exhibits will be set up, as well.

The theme is “Remembering,” and the club is recognizing former members who were instrumental in keeping the garden club going.

Awards will be presented to the past presidents in attendance.

This year’s officers are Bonnie Baum, president; Mary Black, first vice president; Sherri Ang, second vice president, Janet Sgamma, recording secretary; Jackie Rapport, corresponding secretary; and Dale Boardman, treasurer.

The Windermere Garden Club actively supports programs in the community. It provides scholarships to high-school students,

supports the garden at Windermere Elementary and maintains the plantings around the historic schoolhouse in Windermere.

The club was organized in 1956 and was federated into Florida Garden Clubs in 1958. It also maintains membership in National Garden Clubs Inc. Its purpose is to bring together residents of Windermere and the surrounding communities, including Bay Hill, Dr. Phillips, Winter Garden and Ocoee, to enhance the beauty of the area and to encourage conservation through education and action.

There are currently close to 50 active members from around West Orange County.

Both of these are 10% design meetings; the schools are both at the beginning of the design process. This is the “program verification” stage, in which the architect presents to the community what elements will be part of the new high schools.

The two schools, needed based on the latest studentenrollment projections, are set to open in 2022. Those projections, when combined

Orange County Public Schools and Orange County Government have scheduled two informational meetings to inform the community of two new schools planned to relieve overcrowding in Dr. Phillips, Freedom and Windermere high schools.

resident who served in the Florida House of Representatives for six years and in the Florida Senate for four. She challenged Olszewski — the former Winter Garden city commissioner who had held the seat since October 2017 — and garnered 51.29% of the vote. Olszewski took 48.71% — a difference of 2.58%.

In a victory speech given during her election watch party Tuesday, Nov. 6, at the Embassy Suites Downtown Orlando Hotel, Thompson noted she is the first Democrat, woman and person of color to be elected to the seat.

“They’ve been stacking the deck against us for many years,” Thompson said. “They’ve been stacking the deck in favor of the privileged, in favor of people who have money, in favor of dynasties. But this particular race shows that we are moving toward a point where we are knocking the doors down.

“This is a district that has been so gerrymandered in the past that a Democrat has never been competitive,” she said. “A woman has never been elected to (Florida) House District 44. A Democrat has never been elected to House District 44, and a person of color has never been elected in House District 44 — so tonight, you’re looking at a trifecta.”

During the speech, Thompson said she took a year off to travel but returned to run for office when she “saw what was happening.”

“I’m going back to Tallahassee to fight for affordable health care for the 800,000 people who don’t have insurance,” she said.

“I’m going back to fight for quality education in public education without draining out money from public education and giving it to experimental schools where there’s no accountability.

And I’m going back to fight for our environment. ... I couldn’t sit on the sidelines.”

Windermere Preparatory School will be showcasing “Peter Pan” from Nov. 8 to 11 at the school’s new Cypress Center for the Arts.

The production will be the school’s first all-school musical performed at the Cypress Center.

“I think all of us are truly excited about this inaugural event here at the Cypress Center,” said Jason King, Windermere Prep’s director of fine arts. “To be able to do something here on our own campus — in our own home — is going to be truly special.”

Rosemarie Redman is chair of the Theatre Arts Department and the director for the school’s production of “Peter Pan.” She said that all of the school’s fine-arts disciplines have been involved with the musical.

“It is an all-department production,” she said. “We have students playing in the orchestra (who are) from band. We have students who aren’t necessarily on-stage performers, but they’re our backstage crew. The art department is getting involved in painting the scenery. For this first production, we wanted to encompass all of our (fine arts) disciplines. Our dancers are in the show. Two of our dance teachers are our choreographers, so it has become an all-fine-arts moment, as well.”

King said they wanted to make the first performance at the school’s Cypress Center something special. And because of some of the features that the Cypress Center offers, they decided to showcase “Peter Pan.” “We have a space that allows our students to fly,” King said. “We’re going to be able have — for the first time ever — a full orchestra. … Because of what this building is able to do and support for us, that’s

allowing us to think really, really big and dream really big and figure out action plans to make those ideas come to life.”

Although The Cypress Center has opened up some new possibilities for the school’s fine-arts department, at the end of the day, it’s the students who make those possibilities come to life, Redman said.

“The quality of talent and students that we are so blessed to work with … (are) talented enough to handle a true theatrical space,” Redman said. “So to have this (Cypress Center), they are all rising to the occasion. There’s 73 students in the production, and I can honestly say there isn’t one weak link. They are all putting in 150%.”

One of those hard-working students is junior Alex Sheffield, who will be playing the role of Peter Pan. A longtime fan of the book and movies, she chose to portray the role of Peter Pan to challenge herself.

“I kind of had to get out of my head a little bit because I’m so used to playing people my age and a female, so playing (the role) of a 10-year-old boy, you have to completely separate from yourself,” Sheffield said. “I love all the characters, but I’m very happy that I’m playing Peter because I’ve never played someone like him before. He’s very freeing. He’s difficult, acting-wise, and I’ve always wanted to challenge myself.

“I’m a dancer as well, so I like the physicality of the role and I like the challenge of it,” she said.

“He moves around a lot (and) the songs are quite hard to sing, so it’s going to be interesting to see what it’s like while suspended in the air.”

Eighth-grader Michael Crocetti Jr. is another one of the hard-working students cast in the production and will be playing the role of Mr. Smee. He said he’s watched multiple versions of “Peter Pan” and Mr. Smee was always his favorite character. When he heard the school chose “Peter Pan” for this year’s all-school musical, he knew he had to jump on the opportunity to play his favorite character.

“Mr. Smee (was) always my favorite character, no matter what,” Crocetti said. When I heard they were doing (Peter Pan), I said, ‘Oh my goodness, I’ve always wanted to act as someone as ridiculous as he is.’ … He’s just such a fun character to play. I feel like he kind of brings the pirates together. He’s the comic relief in that group. He and Hook’s relationship is such a fun thing to explore.”

The study evaluated cutthrough traffic from four origin points: East Sixth Avenue, Maguire Road, Park Avenue and Chase Road.

According to the study, 75% of the traffic on Park Avenue and Chase Road is cut-through traffic from drivers going to and from other places besides the town of Windermere, and the local roads that receive the most cut-through traffic are Oakdale Street, Second Avenue and Seventh Avenue.

However, the maximum number of vehicles cutting through those roads during the morning and evening rush hour times of 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. is 13 vehicles – approximately one vehicle every five minutes, according to the study.

“The low cut-through percentages and volumes do not demonstrate a need to restrict movements,” reads the document summarizing the traffic study’s conclusion. “Any changes to the roadway network will have a negative effect on residents without

providing a significant benefit.

No roadway changes are recommended to mitigate neighborhood cut-through traffic.”

Upon hearing those numbers and the ultimate recommendation, residents in attendance immediately questioned the study’s methodology, the accuracy of the presented data, the software used to capture the data, sample size and days that traffic was observed.

According to Woodward, the data was collected during two days in 2016. He said the normal capture rate of the software used is “about 30% of traffic,” which does “leave room for error.”

“Traffic volumes are going to be different every time you count,” Woodward said. “There’s always going to be variability. It’s hard to say which day is more representative of the reality.”

Residents overwhelmingly believed the study should have used more current data because the amount of traffic and speeding has worsened in recent years with the heavy development surrounding the town, according to personal observation from residents.

“Our roads are just not safe,”

said Windermere resident Laura Gibbons. “I’ve been here for 30 years, and I’ve never seen it like this. … The cut-through traffic has to stop. I don’t care if I have to be inconvenienced if it means my family stays safe.”

The Windermere Police Department does not have extra officers available for traffic enforcement during the peak traffic periods because the recently passed Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act includes a provision requiring officers at every school and the town does not have the budget to hire more officers.

Other residents who made their way to the lectern during public comment emphasized the need for more police presence on the roadways to enforce speed limits. Council members agreed but noted the inherent challenges of that goal.

“I think we need to keep the traffic on the main roads,” said Town Council Member Bob McKinley.

“As far as speeding, unfortunately, we have an obligation to the school and it’s difficult to monitor these backroads. But I can tell you, in

the morning and the afternoon, it’s dangerous just to walk across the street. … But I think we should do what we can to keep traffic on the main roads.”

Aside from more police, residents also suggested the use of traffic-calming devices, such as speed bumps, and four-way stops, selective road closures and speed limit changes.

Mayor Gary Bruhn said town officials would take residents’ ideas into consideration and find out which are legal, viable and cost-effective to narrow down the town’s options.

He then addressed residents by recounting his efforts to encourage surrounding municipalities to collaborate on more east-west roadways to alleviate traffic congestion.

“These people don’t want to come through here,” Bruhn said.

“They hate coming through here, and they really don’t like us because, quite frankly, what we are is a 30- to 40-minute delay. What we need are other east-west extensions.”

In addition to the athletic amenities and a site for portables, the school also will include a stormwater retention pond on the south end of the property. The pond will be fenced off to prevent students from accessing it.

As of October, all core buildings have been constructed with two of the buildings roofed and the other two partially roofed.

A new middle school under construction in Horizon West is beginning to take shape.

Builders and school board leaders held a 40% construction community meeting regarding a new school that will relieve Bridgewater Middle School. The meeting took place Wednesday, Oct. 30, at BMS. The new Horizon West middle school is known as Site 37-MSW-4 and will be located at 8200 Tattant Blvd., Windermere. It will open in August 2019, just in time for the 2019-20 school year.

Jack Williams of Harvard Jolly Architects discussed some of the security measures of the school’s design.

“There’s passive security in the sense that our buildings are secure from entry — entry by many points — by fencing or the buildings themselves,” Williams said. “It’s designed so that we have a single point of entry during the course of the day where (guests) have to check in at the admin (building) reception before they actually are entered into the school.

“Secondly, we do have security cameras throughout the campus — within the site on the interior of the building — that are monitored for security,” he said. “And finally, the site itself is secured by fencing primarily around the buildings.”

As esports continues to rise in popularity across the U.S., the National Federation of High School Sports has taken notice.

In April, the NFHS announced a partnership with esports startup PlayVS to establish a high-school level esports program, according to an ESPN article.

At least one local school, Windermere Preparatory School, is considering adding esports into its athletics program. To test the waters, Windermere Prep hosted its inaugural esports showdown Wednesday, Oct. 17, to see if students would be interested in participating, according to Danny Haney, athletic director for Nord Anglia Education.

sport, we want to be ready to compete,” Haney said. “We’ll treat our (esports players) just like a football player. The athletic department will run it and will support it just like any of the 19 sports we have here.”

At the esports showdown, Xbox One systems and laptops were set up throughout the school’s cafe.

Students competed in games such as League of Legends, Madden, NBA 2K19, Fifa and Rocket League.

At the center of the cafe were 10 laptops running League of Legends, where two teams of five players competed against each other. A projector displayed the competing teams’ gameplay for spectators.

Haney said he’d been thinking about starting an esports program since December. The esports showdown was a beta test to see if the students would be interested in

esports.

“It’s more of a test run,” Haney said. “We’re just trying to gauge some interest amongst our kids.”

Haney added that he hopes it could lead to something more permanent.

“My goal here is for it to take a life of its own, which it will,” Haney said. “We only advertised it for a few days, and we’ve already seen interest in our kids, and I think it’s going to bring a lot of our kids together because they all (play video games). …Ultimately, our goal here is to form a team.”

In addition to being something that could bring students together, esports also could be something to help a student get into college.

“Right now, there’s 68 colleges that provide scholarships to go to college for … esports,” Haney said.

“If it’s an avenue to potentially (help students) get into college, then why not?”

When it comes to training, Windermere Prep might already be ahead of the game. The school’s head strength coach, Micah Kurtz, wrote an article published on stack. com regarding how strength training benefits esports athletes.

Each school can field as many teams as they can for as many games in a season.

Schools are required to have a faculty advisor, access to internet and computers.

Students are required to pay a monthly $16 participation fee.

Poor posture leads to poor oxygen (circulation) to the brain, which can decrease concentration. If you can improve posture, you can improve concentration, which is going to have direct effects on a video game player.”

To improve posture, Kurtz suggests doing exercises that work out the upper- and lower-back muscles, such as chin-ups, lat pulldowns, squat exercises, dumbbell rows and Romanian deadlifts.

“Anything that strengthens the posterior chain is going to help with posture,” he said.

The prolonged periods of time esports athletes spend sitting while they compete could cause mental fatigue. To address this, Kurtz said esports athletes also could benefit from mental endurance training, and he discussed how to do it.

“An esports player could be walking on a treadmill (or) riding a stationary bike while playing a video game, which is going to correlate to them to be able to concentrate while fatigued,” Kurtz said.

lying across the whitecapping water on long skis, Taylor Garcia grips the handle in his hands a bit tighter as he makes his approach.

He shoots out wide and to the right of the ramp, then cuts sharply left as he rapidly picks up speed.

His skis hit the wide ramp at 70 miles per hour, before he flies off the end and ascends to the heavens. There, he floats for what feels like an eternity.

“You never know what’s going to happen until you’re off the top,” Garcia said. “When you turn for the ramp, especially when you feel like you’re in a good spot — your timing is right and you feel strong — it’s exciting because you know it can be a big one.”

That jump would send Garcia flying 219 feet to finish in third place in the first round of the men’s open jump at the King of Darkness this past Saturday, Nov. 3. The distance fell just short of breaking his individual record of

The tournament there in Horizon West itself has become the go-to home competition for Garcia, who lives right on Little Lake Hancock. For him, it’s the perfect spot to take on some of the world’s best skiing talent without leaving home, though he has no issue with traveling at all.

As a professional he has been around the world and back, racking up medals and trophies at competitions from here to Australia. Seriously, Garcia’s accomplishments over the last six

FHSAA approves classification and playoff changes The changes will affect several sports, and will go into effect starting in the 2019-20 school year.

After what feels like a long and grueling process that started back in July, the FHSAA has finally come to a decision regarding classification and playoff changes.

In a 12-3 vote during their meeting on Monday, Oct. 29, the Association’s Board of Directors approved some big changes regarding classifications

and playoffs for several sports, including: baseball, boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, softball and girls volleyball.

One of the biggest changes from the new rules set in place is the reduction of classifications from nine classes to seven, which will be based on student enrollment starting in the 2019-20 school year. Florida’s rural classification (Class 1A) will not be affected.

In the original proposal, the FHSAA staff proposed basing

classifications on rankings instead of enrollment, which was met with heavy criticism from athletic directors and coaches, said FHSAA executive director George Tomyn in a video posted on Twitter by the FHSAA. “We put together a proposal and we traveled the state over the period of four to five months ...

We listened to what our constituents were saying,” Tomyn said.

years are incredible.

At the Collegiate Water Ski Nationals in 2017, Garcia took first in the men’s jumping and was the overall champion. In that very same year he won gold in the slalom, and brought home the silver medal in jumping and team overall at the 2017 World Under 21 Waterski Championships in Dnipro City, Ukraine.

“It’s a really unique opportunity to travel with your friends and family — I’ve been all over the world with my coaches, and parents and my little sister,” Garcia said. “I’ve met people from all over the world, I’ve lived in multiple parts of the world for months at a time, which I don’t think is normally an option for someone my age.”

But Garcia didn’t magically attain this type of talent overnight — it has taken years and years of constant dedication and practice to his sport. Five days a week Garcia is out on the water to take on three different sets — which amounts to four jumps per set.

It doesn’t sound like an awful lot, but Garcia said that he and other skiers are limited to what they can do just because of the physical toll that the sport dishes out on athletes.

“There are only so many

She place second in the state meet as a sophomore and placed in fourth as a junior. In late October, Holt committed to attend the University of Tennessee in Knoxville on a scholarship.

After a recent victory in districts, she moved on to compete in the regional competition in Class 4A Region 2 on Nov. 2 in Clearwater Beach. She earned first place in regionals and will be moving on to compete at the state level once again.

How long have you been diving?

I’ve been diving for almost four years. I started as a freshman.

How did you get into diving?

I was a gymnast for a really long time, and a lot of gymnasts transition into diving because it’s a lot easier on your body. It’s not as stressful (as) pounding on the floor (as a gymnast). So, I got injured a lot, and I decided I’d try out diving — and after that I just fell in love with it.

Were there any challenges in your transition from gymnastics to diving?

It was a pretty smooth (transition) since I was accustomed to all of the flipping and stuff from gymnastics. Obviously, you have to learn how to go in head-first instead of landing on your feet, which was a little difficult.

What goes through your mind when you’re about to go into a competition?

Before a competition, we really try not to think about it that much because diving is really a mental sport. You have to keep in a certain mindset — like (with) positivity (and) confidence. So basically, I was just trying to keep my mind (focused) and just stay confident going into it.

times you can hit that ramp before your body eventually quits,” Garcia said. “So you kind of minimize it by doing a lot of onshore training — visualizing, watching video after your set and breaking it down so that next time you go out it can be improved immediately.

It’s more quality over quantity.”

That routine is something that Garcia has been woking on since he was first introduced to the sport by his parents — who both water skied — when he was just a 7 year old kid living in California.

He remembers how tough it was back when he first started — he was terrified of the water and just refused to jump in.

That was until he was left at a neighbor’s house, and they decided to help “push” Garcia just a little bit, he said.

And by help, Garcia means they strapped a wakeboard to his feet and sent him out on the water.

“It actually did get me over the hump, and I started skiing everyday and had a good time doing it, but I just needed that one brutal push, I guess,” Garcia said.

From there Garcia made water skiing his passion, which has had more highs than lows.

Though there was one moment that almost derailed his career.

Three years ago down in a

tournament in West Palm, Garcia took a routine jump — the only issue is he didn’t land on his feet. Around 180 feet from the ramp he hit the water head first, which fractured his neck in four places.

The injury left him in a halo medical device for four months, and required a lot of time to recover — both physically and mentally.

“I was terrified trying to get back, but I was also excited — it takes a special kind of crazy to water ski jump,” Garcia said. “It is the most fun and the biggest thrill that you’ll ever experience. You come into that ramp at 70 miles per hour and when you kick it right, you feel like you’re flying.

“It just wasn’t something that I was ready to give up yet,” he said. “It was terrifying my first couple of sets back — I inched into it — and slowly built into jumping full again.”

Despite that early devastating injury, Garcia would push through and find himself tearing it up on the pro and U21 levels.

And while many would be put off by the possible negatives of the sport, Garcia said that he has no plans of hanging up his skis anytime soon.

“I want to jump until I cant jump anymore,” Garcia said.

What’s your favorite thing about diving?

I love the sport, and I love the camaraderie that comes with being on a high-school diving team and making great relationships with everyone.

“Over the course of that time our constituents told us, ‘Hold on boys, slow down, enrollment is a huge factor.’ Our constituents also told us that district tournament play was very, very important to them.”

For many coaches and ADs throughout the area, keeping enrollment as a factor in determining classifications and holding on to district tournaments were big deals.

It was also the simple act of the FHSAA taking its time to go around and take heed of what the athletic departments had to say that really stood out for those like Olympia High School AD Kevin McElveen.

“I guess what I’m happiest most with is the fact that they listened to us,” McElveen said.

“They listened to the concerns that we as ADs had, that we

We’ve done the same thing we’ve been doing all year — just training really hard and trying to perfect our dives. (I’m) keeping that positive, confident mindset.

What’s the best advice you’ve received when it comes to diving?

Everything has to go back to the mindset — staying positive and confident — and just believing in yourself.

Each class will be broken up into four regions, and each region will have four districts — all of which will have an equal number of teams.

The biggest change with districts is that now, unlike in previous years, schools no longer are required to schedule in-district teams. Some people may question the decision, but it makes sense when you include the fact that playoff spots will now operate in the same manner as football.

While district champions will be given an automatic bid and seeded by MaxPreps, teams No. 5 through No. 8 will receive at-large bids via their MaxPreps rankings. Teams will receive more points for scheduling tougher teams, which is now helped along by the fact that schools have total control over who they play.

This is where things get interesting however, as some coaches and ADs are for the use of a rankings system, while others are wary.

“I’m a little concerned about the whole MaxPreps rankings and determining the 5-through-8 seeds, because no one seems to know what the formula is,” said Windermere boys basketball coach Mark Griseck. “If you can tell me what the formula is, then I might understand a little better.”

Despite whatever worries there are among schools, there is one thing that is abundantly clear: as long as the FHSAA continues to listen and evolve, there will be progress made.

“I like the new one better than the old one, so we’ll go with it and see what happens and see how it goes,” Griseck said.

Olympia staves off Windermere 31-20 in season finale

SSAC SEMI-FINAL (SATURDAY, NOV. 10): WINDERMERE PREP (9-0, 1-0) V. ORLANDO CHRISTIAN PREP (7-2, 1-0)

One game separates Windermere Prep from another trip to the SSAC championship game. In this week’s semifinal matchup with Orlando Christian Prep (7-2, 1-0), the Lakers will look to stay undefeated as they try and slow down a Warriors offense that has averaged 34 points per game.

The Warriors are led by senior quarterback Connor Edel, who has tossed for 1,127-yards and 17 touchdowns on 60-of112 passing. Luckily for Windermere Prep, defense is one thing the Lakers do better than most teams, as they’ve only given up just under nine points per game through nine games — the Lakers have only given up more than 20 points on one occasion, while holding five different opponents under 10 points.

CLASS 8A, REGION 2: NO. 4 DR. PHILLIPS (5-5, 4-0) VS. NO. 5 CENTENNIAL (7-2, 2-1)

After sealing up its 11th straight district title, Dr. Phillips now find itself in a tough matchup with a Centennial side known for its staunch defense. The Eagles have given up only 10 points per game, and are led by sophomore middle linebacker Deshauwn Alleyne who leads the team in total tackles (63) and is second in sacks (5).

On the offensive side of the ball, the Panthers’ defense will have to deal with junior quarterback Blayne Watkins and senior running back Cedric Wilcox IV. Through the year Watkins has racked up 1,309 passing yards and 17 touchdowns on 95-for170 passing, while Wilcox has run circles around defenses — collecting 863-yards and 11 touchdowns on 124 carries.

espite a late comeback attempt from the Windermere Wolverines, the Olympia Titans were able to hold them off and take a 31-20 win in the final game of the regular season.

After Olympia (3-7) scored a touchdown just 33 seconds into the game, the Wolverines responded with a touchdown of their own on a four-yard run from Isaiah Jackson to make it 7-6. Following the touchdown, Windermere (2-7) would trail by one after the two-point conversion attempt failed.

Following an interception from Jack Lipinski that was run back deep into Windermere territory, Taelson Jean ran for a 31-yard touchdown with 6:46 left in the second quarter to extend the Titans’ lead to 14-6. On the ensuing drive, Olympia’s defense would force another turnover, as A’alijah Fuller

returned a fumble for a touchdown to give Olympia a 15-point lead.

“We’ve always had a bend but don’t break mentality,” said Olympia head coach Travis Gabriel. “The kids just kept fighting. The ball bounced our way and I couldn’t be more appreciative of the ball bouncing (our way) and we took advantage of it.

Turnovers always help.”

Olympia would close the half with one more touchdown on a 17-yard pass from Garrett Velin to Derrick Mays to go up 28-6 at halftime.

On Windermere’s opening drive of the second half, Austin Hatcher ran for a 25-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 28-13.

With 10:44 remaining in the game, the Wolverines would score again on another QB keeper from Jackson, this time from five-yards out to make it a one possession game.

With 6:11 remaining in the

game and the ball at Windermere’s 31-yard line, Gabriel opted for a field goal with a chance to extend the lead to 11. Colby Kintner would make that decision pay off, as he drilled a 48-yard field goal to make the score 31-20.

“The scary part about it is he’s a junior,” Gabriel said.

“So he’s coming back and he’s kicked that — he’s kicked 55-yarders. I have no nerves, I have all of the confidence in my kicker and I will argue and tell everybody I have the best kicker in the state of Florida, hands down. Anytime I’m inside the 40, I’m thinking about kicking it.”

Windermere would attempt a field goal of their own to cut the lead back to eight points with 2:15 left in the game, but the attempt was unsuccessful as the Titans were able to successfully thwart the Wolverines second half surge.

“They saw a big lead at halftime and they just got com-

placent,” Gabriel said. “They held on when it mattered most and I couldn’t be more proud of my boys. They endured so much this season, overcame so much. What a way to go out with a win. That’s all I wanted.”

Despite the loss, as a whole the Wolverines had a largely successful 2018 season. With their first two wins in program history coming this season, along with a couple other games where they had chances to win. The groundwork has been laid for potentially even more success in the 2019 season.

“We really felt like we could’ve gotten he first two that we played,” Windermere head coach Fred Priest said.

“That might have went a long way into some other things as far as confidence and those kinds of things. It’s always hard to win the first game, so it took us a few chances to finally win that first one.

“It’s about the journey,” he said. “What our journey did for us is we have the first win in school history, we won two ballgames. Statistically we did so much better than we did a year ago, so we got a lot of things to build on.”

Although it was a difficult season for the Titans, they ended it on a strong note with the win over Windermere.

With a young team that has a majority of its players coming back next year, the future appears to be bright with Gabriel at the helm.

“It was all about laying the foundation,” Gabriel said on his first year at Olympia. “(It’s) all about getting through the first year. We laid the foundation. I couldn’t be more proud of my kids. They fought through the good and bad — overcame everything. This is just the start.”

Windermere Prep moves on to SSAC semifinal

espite being without star quarterback Kai Patterson for most of its game on Friday night, Windermere Prep still found ways to pull out a 29-19 win over Master’s Academy to push through to the SSAC semifinals.

A big boost for Windermere Prep (9-0, 1-0) came in the form of senior running back Mason Russell, whose three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing) in the first half helped

propel the Lakers to a big 23-3 lead going into halftime.

Russell would end up with 122 total yards of offense (78-yards rushing and 44-yards passing).

It was also during that first half when Patterson was taken out of the game after seemingly hurting himself while playing on the defensive side of the ball — where he often times plays at the free safety position.
