WINTER PARK OBITUARY GEOFFREY MICHAEL “G” SARGEANT DIED OCT. 19, 2018

Respected Winter Park businessman Geoffrey Michael Sargeant, 86, died peacefully surrounded by family at home on Oct. 19, 2018. He is survived by his wife, Juliette “Judi” Holler Sargeant of Winter Park, Fla.; son, Jeff (Holly) Sargeant; and daughter Mary (Mitch) Sargeant Karlan, both of Connecticut. He was predeceased by their mother, Grace Sargeant.

He is also survived by Juliette’s family, including Roger Holler III (Sallye), Dr. Christopher Holler (Danyal) and Jill Holler Rogers (Mike) and their families.

“G” is already missed by his scores of grandchildren and great-grandchildren for his loving ways, sparkling eyes and quick wit, bringing joy into every room he entered. The family’s dogs, Ginger and Tabitha, sense his loss and are consoling those he left behind.

He was born July 14, 1932, in Port Chester, New York, in the same hospital where Juliette was born years later. Former owner and principal of Insurance Trends Inc. in Westport, Connecticut, he was a trusted adviser to the Holler and Classic automotive and real-estate companies.

Growing up, he was an avid fisherman and racquetball player. Staying in shape was important to him. He also enjoyed photography and lighthouses. “G” was all about family. Favorite memories include vacations to Hawaii, Cape Cod, family trips to New York for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and especially the trip to Las Vegas, when he and Judi eloped.

A private family service will be held this weekend. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to the American Heart Association via heart.org to honor “G” and his legacy.

“Home” was the theme of the 2018 TEDxOrlando event, which took place Saturday, Oct. 27 at Full Sail University in Winter Park.

Attendees of the five-hour event enjoyed TED talks from 11 Central Florida-based speakers who shared presentations on the multifaceted concept of home — with topics such as co-housing communities, foster care, Florida-native bacteria and water quality, alligators, Puerto Rican migrants, the Everglades plight, and space flight.

Winter Park-based Foxtail expands to College Park The coffee company plans to a new location in College Park recently.

If you live in the College Park area and are looking for a hometown coffee joint to get your java, you don’t have to wait much longer.

The Winter Park based Foxtail Coffee Company announced that it has leased a space at 3405 Edgewater Drive in College Park — the current sight of Hubbly Bubbly, which closed Friday, Sep. 28.

This means folks living in the neighborhood won’t have to make the jaunt out to Winter Park or Orlando to get their coffee fix.

The choice to open a new shop in the area was a pretty easy one, said Foxtail co-founder Alex Tchekmeian.

“We’ve known for a long time we wanted to be part of the College Park community, and when the opportunity came to lease a space here, we couldn’t pass it up,” said Tchekmeian in a statement.

Foxtail Coffee College Park is slated to open before the end of the year, and most of the work needed to get done before the grand opening will be facility based.

Foxtail will be renovating the interior and exteriors of the building, giving a rustic feel to the space by using a blend of wood and metal accents. The goal is to help it fit in to the bare roots aesthetic of the College Park area.

The new shop in College Park is part of a recent explosion of expansion for the company — which was founded in 2016.

There are four other locations in the works. To go along with its two locations in Winter Park, downtown Orlando, Altamonte Springs and space in the Dr. Phillips Center, Foxtail currently is working on its locations in the Hourglass District, on Lee Road (site of the old Rhino Subs), the bookstore on the campus of the University of Central Florida and finally its location in the southern downtown area of Orlando.

“We’ve got everything from authentic Greek food, actually created by … the parishioners at the church,” said Simone Behar, publicity chair for the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Great Orlando. “It’s about as authentic as you can get. We serve all the quintessential Greek meals and desserts.”

The food offered at the Maitland-based festival includes the baklava, a variety of gyros, lamb, Greek fries and potatoes, and more. One particular showstopper for guests is the saganaki — a flaming Greek cheese cooked up on the spot, Behar said.

“We always try to play around and bring new items,” Behar said. “We always have our staples, but we like to play around. … We’ve done baklava ice cream and cheesecake before to see how that’ll do.”

Behar, part of the church for 11 years, said the annual event attracts visitors from across all of Central Florida. To match the growing numbers, the church has started offering shuttle parking in addition to parking on-site.

Among the festival’s biggest attractions are the Greek dancers. Children starting at age 3, middle-schoolers and adults all will show off their dance moves as part of the church’s Hellenic dance program. What’s more, dancers will wear Greek islandspecific costumes to showcase their culture.

More than 10 vendors offering a mix of items from paintings to jewelry will be present inside the church’s reception center. Nick Trizelas and A Night In Athens will perform the music for the three-day event. Behar said there will be a number of bounce houses and face-painters inside for the children, as well. The Rev. Protopresbyter Constantine Simeonidis, the church’s priest, will give tours of the church’s interior for visitors interested in the Greek Orthodox religion and its iconography.

“Something that places us apart from the other churches is our iconography,” Behar said. “We have (icons) all over the walls. All the way from the ground to all the way up to the ceiling. Every piece of the entire church on the inside are icons … every icon represents a different part of the Bible. It’s a big storytelling when you walk in.”

Some of the money raised at the festival will benefit the church’s programs and expenses but also the Ephraim Project — a faith-based nonprofit that delivers food, blankets and other services to Orlando’s homeless and working poor.

It’s one of Winter Park’s most cherished resources. It’s been recognized nationally and even featured on the Golf Channel. It’s the Winter Park Golf Course — a gem that’s carefully polished and maintained by a group of unsung heroes.

A maintenance crew comprising Golf Course Superintendent Ed Batcheller, Mike Dague, Robert Spencer and Moses Figueroa keeps the golf course in its pristine condition. They leave it ready to be played and enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike.

But what exactly does it take to keep a golf course looking so nice?

The answer: a strict schedule of routine mowings and careful attention to detail — seven days a week.

Beyond mowing the greens at one-eighth of an inch every day with surgical precision, the crew mows the fairways and tees two days a week and rakes the bunkers daily.

That work continues all throughout the year — rain or shine — with each crew member putting in about 40 hours a week, said Batcheller, adding that the summer months require an even closer watch of the course because of all the frequent rain.

Beyond maintaining the course, the crew also sets the pins five days a week, changing the layout of the course by moving the flags to different areas of the green. In many ways, it’s the crew of four

CARE FOR THE COURSE It takes much more than the maintenance crew to keep the course golf in good shape, Golf Course Superintendent Ed Batcheller said. It’s up to users of the course to practice course etiquette as they play to keep things looking nice.

“All of this turf out here is a living thing,” Batcheller said.

If you swing your club at the opening drive and skim the grass, the best thing to do is put the divot back or put some sand in it to level it out so it has a chance to heal.

The ball landing on a fairway from a high altitude can create a small ball mark as well, so it’s best to carry around a ball mark repair tool.

Raking the bunkers after you step in them also keeps the trap nice and level, Batcheller said.

“If you hit a golf ball and it lands in somebody’s footprint, you’re not going to be happy,” he said.

Golfers should also stay on the cart paths when using a golf cart — never on the greens — and let other golfers go ahead of them if they’re playing faster, Batcheller said.

“We also do that with the tee markers. … There’s three sets of tee markers. You’ve got the ladies’, the men’s, and you’ve got the pro tees. We’ll move those around the same way with the pins.”

The crew knows full well they’re working every day on something special, Dague said. The course looks nicer than ever after its renovation that began in March 2016 and finished October of that same year. That project saw the entire course get a facelift with added contouring, bunkers, new fairways and stunning greens.

“It’s a top-five nine-hole course in America,” Dague said. “Just go on the Golf Channel. There were 36,000 rounds (played) in our first full year after renovation.

“I follow everything on social media,” he said. “I follow all the architects and the golf course and the Golf Channel and stuff, so every time it gets talked about, I see it. Every time you see something get talked about where you just came from, you have to feel good about it.”

Winter Park Assistant Director of Communications Craig O’Neil said the golf-course maintenance crew — like many city employees — may go largely unnoticed, but they are a part of what makes Winter Park special.

“They’re out working in the elements, the heat and the rain,” he said. “They’re what really makes the city as beautiful as it is.”

“One of my biggest tips is that I never bake at the temperature that the recipe may have. I kind of tweak things, or I add additional vanilla or some kind of other flavoring.”

I was taught a certain way by my cake instructor, but I just cannot de-crumb it like that. I end up tearing up the cake. A good tip would be to improvise and do the things that come naturally to that person.”

All proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the nonprofit, which empowers women to be successful by providing them with professional attire for job interviews — as well as development tools to help them further their careers. It’s meant to give women financial independence to serve their families and strengthen their communities, PR and Marketing Director Lauren Sedam said.

The challenge is one of the organization’s largest fundraising events of the year, alongside its annual Hats Off to Success luncheon in the spring. Local bakeries from the Central Florida area go head-to-head and compete for awards such as Crowd Favorite, Best Presentation and Best Frosting. The bakeries also make a special cupcake that they submit to judges for a shot at Best Overall.

This year’s Cupcake Challenge has the theme of “Fall Harvest,” so guests can expect to appease their appetite for autumn flavors.

“When we started this event,

that was when cupcakes were kind of exploding on the scene,” Sedam said. “That was the big trend in desserts, with a lot of cupcake bakeries out there. Since then, it’s become a favorite and fun one. It opens it up to families which is a big part of our mission.”

Jillian Hopke, of Jillycakes in Winter Park, has competed in the competition almost every year since the event’s inception.

“This will be our seventh year with the Cupcake Challenge; we always sort of place-mark this event, because it’s a good cause,” Hopke said. “You talk about underprivileged people and (people) are like ‘Oh, just get a job.’ They need facilities to do that, which is training for interviews and clothes to wear to interviews and all that stuff. Dress for Success is the most directly responsible for helping people in that mode instead of just reprimanding people who are having a rough go at life. We really like that part of it.”

Hopke wouldn’t reveal too much about her approach to this year’s entry but hinted that it would take on the flavor of a classic holiday side dish instead of a dessert.

Shelley Thompson, of Central Florida Cakes in the Lake Mary/ Sanford area, also is returning to the competition. She said it’s a sweet feeling being part of an event that benefits such a special cause.

“I absolutely love what they’re doing for women with Dress for Success,” Thompson said. “I’m a single mother myself, so I have just a high level of respect for what they’re doing for women.”

Through my experience in public safety, housing and the arts, I see a great many opportunities and challenges for our community. I believe this experience, combined with my ability to work with people from different backgrounds, gives me a distinct advantage. Our state Legislature often preaches “small government,” yet every legislative session they practice “big-government” policies through the destruction of Home Rule and preemption, which strips away a local government’s ability to make place-based decisions. … We must grant our local cities and counties with the ability to make their own decisions, thus granting local citizens with the opportunity to engage with these decisions at a more intimate level, too.

What are the biggest problems facing Florida public education?

Teachers deserve improved pay, access to leadershipdevelopment experiences and the freedom to teach beyond a test. In Orange County, some students are subjected to as much as 1,125 minutes (nearly 19 hours) of assessment testing per year. That’s not OK. Students need less high-stakes testing, more opportunities to develop critical thinking skills, access to greater civics education, and STEM curriculum. … We also need to fund school-safety measures. I will never arm our teachers and will instead invest in trained student resource officers alongside mental-health providers.

Both you and your opponent have said the Sunshine State should lead the way for renewable solar energy. How is this accomplished?

Not only does Florida not have clean-energy targets, but according to the Solar Energy Industries Association, we are third in the U.S. in terms of potential rooftop solar and 12th in installations. … Florida is the perfect state to pursue solar energy, but fossil-fuel companies fear irrelevancy if they allow local growth of solar, because the expansion of rooftop solar could be a threat to their role of supplying traditional energy sources. With that said, we lag behind many other states when it comes to solar policies and need to establish a renewable portfolio standard and allow power purchase agreements.

How important are the arts to Florida, and why?

The arts matter because it instills values and translates experiences across space and time. It can help bridge gaps across class and culture, teach public-speaking skills to the shyest of people and create an avenue for expression for those of any ability. As the National Art Education Association points out, art is beneficial for the artist as an outlet for their work, but it is also economically viable. In fact, Florida’s Department of State declared Florida’s arts-and-culture sector to be a $4.7 billion economic engine responsible for 132,366 fulltime jobs.

What is your stance on the Home Rule, and how should state and local governments function together?

Almost all our clients are cities and counties, and I have seen first-hand the impact of unfunded state mandates and regulation on local entities. I believe the government that works best is the closest to the people, which is local. I would like to see cities and counties regardless of size work together and share information and resources more effectively in areas like public safety, transportation, housing and environmental protection.

What are the biggest problems facing Florida public education?

More opportunities for students to access vocational education training. Not every student will go to college, but we need to have workplace opportunities for them. I toured a concrete block manufacturing operation, where someone out of high school can make up to $60,000 a year. I also realize not every student learns the same way and at the same pace of other students, so creating opportunities where these students can learn at a pace that suits them is equally important.

Both you and your opponent have said the Sunshine State should lead the way for renewable solar energy. How is this accomplished?

Our firm designed the Florida Solar Energy Center, and for the past 38 years, almost all of our projects have been design to be energy-, water- and sewer-efficient. We have a unique opportunity in Central Florida shared by no one else across the nation.

We have UCF, the Space Center and the Solar Energy Center, and we are a major transportation hub with rail, a port, major airports and highways. I want to bring these entities together to create a “silicon valley” for photovoltaic and renewable energy.

Central Florida can and should be a world-class leader in this field. It would create research, manufacturing and educational opportunities that would be an incalculable benefit to Central Florida.

How important are the arts to Florida, and why?

Arts bring opportunities, money and a diversity of culture that enhances our community’s appeal to residents, visitors. The arts play a crucial role in helping to lure businesses to Central Florida. Much has been made about the value of STEM education, and I believe that this is one half of the equation, with arts and humanities completing this cycle. Having served almost 20 years on the board at the Maitland Art Center, including three terms as its board chair, I had an opportunity to work with many different art organizations across the region. I am both a proponent and defender of the arts.

emocratic candidate Joy Goff-Marcil is challenging Republican state Rep. Bob Cortes for the Florida House of Representatives District 30 seat.

Cortes, 55, is a former Longwood city commissioner and mayor and has served as the District 30 state representative since November 2014. Goff-Marcil, 50, has served on the Maitland City Council for five years as both councilwoman and vice mayor.

Goff-Marcil won the Aug. 28 Democratic primary for District 30 against Clark Anderson and Brendan Ramírez, while Cortes ran unopposed in the 2018 Republican primary. The two will face one another during the Nov. 6 general election.

In Maitland, state lawmakers renewed a development agreement that was approved by previous Maitland council members before the recession. In doing so, the state Legislature took away the ability of the current City Council to stop or change these development plans. Continue to look for ways to lower health care cost by providing options for patients. Not all treatments must be done in a hospital; we can promote ambulatory services that would reduce cost. Lower prescription cost and also look to provide coverage for those not quite yet in their retirement age but are over 50 that have worked most of their life and can’t afford insurance.

What are the keys to boosting Florida’s economy?

Continue to maintain our tax structure low. (More than) 1,000 new residents are moving to Florida daily. These folks will contribute to our economy (because) they will bring tax dollars into our local economy.

We help promote job creation for all Floridians, which would bring more tax dollars for education and other needed services.

(Because) the state does receive its core funding from sales tax and fees (such as) driver’s licenses and registrations, a growing population would bring more funding. We saw this increase when those fleeing the island from Maria last year.

What are the biggest problems facing Florida public education, and how would you address them?

The biggest problem is that taxpayer money is being taken away from public schools and used to fund private school vouchers and privately operated charter schools — schools (that) are not held to the same level of accountability as the public schools in terms of testing, teacher certification, transportation or admission. I want to work with educators, administrators and legislators to make public education a priority again. I want our local teachers and schools to be able to regain control of curricula, reduce the importance of standardized testing and further expand public acceleratedtraining programs and technical education.

What is the solution to our health care problem?

The first step would be to allow the expansion of Medicaid into Florida. This would drive down the cost for all of us, because residents would not be using emergency rooms for their preventative care. Also, it is the right thing to do to make sure people who cannot afford health care have the opportunity for access to quality health care.

What are the keys to boosting Florida’s economy?

Florida’s economy is based on our natural resources. We attract business by creating a great place to live with clean waterways, quality health care, innovative public education and support for small businesses. We also must pass sensible gun laws so businesses and their employees feel their families are safe.

Wildcats win in the water

Winter Park High School’s swimming and diving teams made a big splash at the recent district meet.

The Winter Park High School swimming and diving teams are making waves — and hoping they lead to a consistent winning culture.

Winter Park’s boys and girls teams each captured their respective district championships at their meet on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Winter Park High School. The girls took the top spot with a total of 613 points, while the boys finished in first place with 605 points.

It was all thanks to a team effort by both groups and some stellar individual performances.

Leading the way for the girls was Locket Bowley — who won the championships for the 200- and 500-yard freestyle races — and Caroline Cooper — who came out on top in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard fly races. Bowley and Cooper also got some help from Erika Hirschmann and Moriah Freitas to take the 400-yard freestyle relay.

The boys team got some help from Hector Rodriguez, who took first place in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard breaststroke. The 200- and 400yard medley relay team came out on top with a district championship, as well. Yashar Pourmoghadam, Hector Rodriguez, John Beattie and Emmanuel De Diego made up the 200-yard team, and Ezequiel Negron, Yashar Pourmoghadam, Mohamed Refaat and Hector Rodriguez swam the 400-yard relay.

so hard, and we’re really sticklers about going to all the practices,” swimming coach Joe Auer said.

“The kids responded, and they worked really hard and helped each other through all of the difficult workouts. They became more of a family, because they’re

dealing with all of the pain and how hard it is to get through these workouts. They really came together, and it’s just showing in the pool now.”

It’s Auer’s third year with the program, and he hopes to bring a winning culture back to the school for which it was known in the 1980s and ’90s.

“Winter Park traditionally over the years has been a good swimming program — they’ll win districts or definitely metro every once in a while,” Auer said.

“Way back in the ’80s and ’90s, they used to win them all the

time. Now we’re just trying to bring that back. The coaches and I are trying to get swimming back to where it was. … We’re pushing real hard to win those types of meets and prepare for them.”

So far, the Wildcats have seen that consistency. Only the boys took district two years ago, but last year, both teams won districts. Auer also gave a shout out to the diving team — four divers on the girls group advanced to the regional meet.

“We’re just trying to grow off of that and get better and better each year,” Auer said. “Hopeful-

ly, we start winning some regions and then hopefully we win some state one day. … That would be nice.”

Hector Rodriguez came up just short of a state championship of his own last year with a secondplace finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. He’s hungry to get back, he said.

“States are only two weeks away — I’ve had states on my mind since I got second last year,” he said. “I feel pretty ready for it. This year is my last year, my senior year, so I’m going to try and win it.”

Meanwhile, Locket Bowley is just getting started as a freshman. Despite the individual success in districts, she said she is just enjoying finding herself as a swimmer.

“I just kind of wanted to get up there and swim — I wanted to have fun,” Bowley said.

One of Auer’s biggest points of emphasis with the team isn’t in the pool but rather in the mind.

The coach has pushed swimmers to win and compete without high-end tech suits or shaving.

If they can do that, they’ll reach the next level, he said.

“It’s a mental game … some kids are strong enough mentally that they don’t need it,” Auer said. “That’s why I want to get these kids to that level.”

The district championships are nice, but the teams have their sights set on the state meets.
