Can’t find parking in Downtown Winter Park? The city is looking to prevent any parking problems from getting worse.

Winter Park City Commissioners approved Monday, Oct. 22, several changes to improve the

parking situation downtown. The vote meant a preliminary approval on an ordinance that proposes different changes to the city’s landdevelopment code that impact parking.

during which council members debated accepting a unanimous request from the city’s Lakes Board to move from monthly meetings to assembling on an as-needed basis, council members again discussed the idea of dissolving the existing structure.

The city’s Lakes board unanimously requested Lakes meetings be changed from the third Wednesday of each month to an as-needed basis without a mandatory routine. Many board members were of the belief they had little to do or contribute — two prior Lakes meetings had been canceled because of a lack of content. The fiscal advisory board, the transportation advisory board, the board of adjustment and appeals and the board of zoning adjustment currently all meet as needed.

Councilwomen Bev Reponen and Joy Goff-Marcil were of the firm belief that allowing board members to set their own schedule would cause the Lakes board to become underreported and ignored because of a lack of a schedule.

“Something brought up is the importance of having a regular meeting, where members and residents can come and know they have that time,” Goff-Marcil said. “If it’s as-needed, they’re never going to know when there’s a meeting. … The Lakes Board is a very important board and should have something to do all the time.

If they don’t have something to do, we should give them something to do.”

Lowndes, Reponen and GoffMarcil held firm in their opposition to the schedule’s dissolution.

Councilman Thomas hurried the discussion to its conclusion, and a motion to reject the request was passed 3-2.

LAND DEVELOPMENT CODE DRAFT

The council approved an amendment to the land development code to permit two-family townhouses on a conditional-use basis in the RSD-1 zoning district.

In 2017, the Meridian Homes contractor company constructed two duplexes that were split into four parcels after filing with the Orange County Property Appraiser. However, they did this without consulting the city of Maitland and eventually discovered it was illegal.

The lots were sold as fee simple to buyers with secured mortgages.

Howard Axner, on behalf of 201 Orange Place LLC, requested council to direct staff to amend the code to approve the lot splits.

Council was amenable to the suggestion, particularly because of the idea of having new housing types in the city, but noted the amendment was yet to be drafted and still could be rejected.

“The cities, counties, municipalities have been needing to address alternative housing ideas on all the different sites,” Mayor Dale McDonald said. “P&Z staff will go to town on this and staff will look at this before bringing it to us. … I am very comfortable moving this along through the process.”

City tackles parking changes CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

ley-Horn, who were tasked last year with updating and modernizing the city’s parking codes within the Central Business District, Hannibal Square and Orange Avenue. Those rules and regulations in Winter Park have remained largely unchanged since the 1970s, according to a city staff report from the City Commission agenda.

One of the most significant proposed changes could help stop a perceived parking deficit in the downtown area from getting worse. The proposed ordinance in the land-development code would take away a condition put in place back in 2003 — a time when the Winter Park Village was booming and Park Avenue was in a lull.

At that time, Winter Park attempted to attract more finedining restaurants to the area to boost foot traffic along Park Avenue and Hannibal Square. This was done by removing a requirement that any restaurant entering a former retail/office space had to provide the additional parking required for restaurants.

Since 2003, 17 restaurants have been established in place of retail spaces within the Central Business District. Under existing codes, the CBD is 207 parking spaces short of what it needs to handle the restaurant guests.

Removing the special exemption from the code might result in a potential side effect though: fewer new restaurants in the CBD. “It would not be impossible, but it’s going to be more difficult,” Planning Manager Jeff Briggs said during a Planning and Zoning Board meeting in August.

“If The Gap wants to change to a restaurant, they’ve got a parking garage. They can meet the parking requirement. ... But there are only a limited number of property owners that have the parking. It will restrict the growth.”

Other changes to the code include changing the distance permitted for off-site shared parking from 300 feet to 750 feet and using the Urban Land Institute’s Shared Parking analysis to determine when shared parking scenarios are appropriate.

Two changes within the ordinance also involve specific parking requirements for new developments.

The ordinance changes the parking requirements for new retail and general office floor space within the CBD, the New England Avenue portion of Hannibal Square and along the Orange Avenue corridor. That requirement would change from one space per 250 square feet to one space for each 333 square feet (four per 1,000 square feet to three per 1,000 square feet). The reasoning behind the change, according to the staff report, is trips to these locations are multidestination trips. It’s a measure that streamlines the code, City Manager Randy Knight said.

The other change outlines modifying the parking requirements for large office buildings.

The code would provide for the current one space for 250 square feet (four per 1,000 square feet) on the first 20,000 square feet and then transition to one space for each 333 square feet (three per 1,000 square feet) for the floor area above 20,000 square feet.

This is because many large office buildings see many unused parking spaces every day, according to the staff report.

However, there was one change the City Commission removed from the ordinance: providing for the potential future creation of a fee-in-lieu of parking program in which property owners would purchase or fund the needed parking within a city-owned parking facility.

parking structure because there aren’t any plans.

“I don’t want to get bogged down in something that’s probably not going to happen for the foreseeable future,” Leary said.

City Commissioner Carolyn Cooper said she was concerned about the changes, believing that changes to the parking codes could hurt the character of the Park Avenue corridor.

“Anything we do to change the parking code is going to make it more likely that we add intensity of land use to the Park Avenue corridor,” Cooper said. “As we start to tinker with the parking code, we are weakening the protection of the very corridor that distinguishes us from other communities and brings economic value to Winter Park.”

Winter Park Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Betsy Gardner Eckbert said the business community welcomes and supports the changes. She said the chamber supports the removal of the retail to restaurant exemption, but only if the City Commission remains open to revisiting it based on market influences.

“I want to thank staff for their hard work on a response to some of the issues around parking that we provoked last year when we started discussing this through a survey of over 500 people,” Gardner Eckbert said. “It’s not just about parking — it’s about how we plan land use that works for future generations.”

t’s a firefighter’s job to keep a community safe, and some firefighters take that noble calling a step further — helping a community far from home.

Four Winter Park firefighters were given a hero’s welcome home Friday, Oct. 19, after finishing a 10-day deployment to the Panhandle to rescue and aid those affected by Hurricane Michael.

Brave first-responders from Seminole County Fire Department, Orange County Fire Rescue and Orlando, Reedy Creek, Mount Dora, Clermont and Winter Park fire departments all arrived back in Orlando at the Urban Search and Rescue Offices & Training Facility to find a cheering crowd of families, friends and fellow firefighters greeting them. The four Winter Park firefighters — Andrew Isaacs, Rodney Childers, Alfredo Escalera Jr. and Bryan Moman — were chosen to be a part of the group of 46 team members named Florida Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 4, and were in charge of setting up communication towers as the mobile area radio cache unit.

The Winter Park first-responders traveled Task Force 4 to Port St. Joe, Mexico Beach, Wewahitchka and St. Vincent Island, where the team rescued dozens of people and searched thousands of houses.

“Once we started getting into Port St. Joe and Mexico Beach, the devastation was unbelievable,” Moman said. “There were foundations where houses used to be and buildings collapsed — places that were unrecognizable. The beach was washed away. The roads were washed away.”

The team of four from Winter Park had an important job to do: provide emergency communications to the area. For about a decade, Winter Park has maintained and operated a mobile area radio cache

system for Central Florida – for occasions just like this.

“We were the radio truck — they had zero communications until we got there,” Isaacs said. “We set up on top of a Highway 98 bridge — it’s 100 feet in the air — and provided 911 and radio traffic for the entire area.”

Among the families waiting to welcome home Task Force 4 was Isaacs’ wife, Heather, and their four children. Heather said it was hard to have her husband away for so long but that she understood the importance of his training and the mission at hand.

“I’ve never been more proud of him — he was called to do this and called to serve other people, so it’s been an honor for me to stay home and serve him while he’s been gone,” Heather said. “He’s prepared for this his whole career. …

I was more than happy to support him to be able to go out and do what he was trained to do.”

Winter Park Fire Chief Dan Hagedorn said he was incredibly proud of the four firefighters from his department.

“It’s our community helping others, and we’re glad to be able to offer skilled personnel in that regard to do some specialized service,” Hagedorn said. “As far as them coming back, we’re excited.

We know they’ve seen a lot of devastation. That takes a toll on a human being, because at the end of the day we’re not machines; we’re people with families. It affects us all differently. We’ll welcome them back, get them back home, get them all rested up and get them what they need.”

The Winter Park Fire-Rescue Department has had a long history of sending firefighters wherever they are needed — from the Hurricane Harvey floods in Texas last year to wildfires in California.

“That’s the backbone of our service — coming together in times of need,” Hagedorn said.

Local first-responders hung a giant American flag to welcome the returning Task Force 4.

Andrew Isaacs, of the Winter Park Fire-Rescue Department, finally returned home to reunite with his wife, Heather, and their children, Savannah, Jonathan, Jackson and Eric.

Alfredo Escalera Jr., of the Winter Park Fire-Rescue Department, was thrilled to see his wife, Jackie, and daughters, Stevie and Demi.

ou hear lots of things at the Maitland Art Center.

You hear about the art center’s 50-year history. You hear about the artists who called the building their home. You hear who they were, what art they made and, sometimes, how they died.

On Oct. 28, you might even hear the things that go bump in the night.

How the stories go, if you hear staff tell them, is that the center has experienced a number of mysterious phenomena within its walls over the decades. The smell of smoke in an empty room. Raspy breathing on the intercom in the dead of night. The feeling you’re being watched. And, occasionally, the sight of the museum’s long-dead founder, still walking the campus grounds.

On the night of Oct. 28, the Art & History Museums Maitland is sharing some of those stories with Maitland residents with its Haunted Tours of Maitland Art Center.

ENTER IF YOU DARE

The idea for the tours, which will examine the center’s haunted past, began when center Director of Operations Danielle Thomas noticed something peculiar while scrolling through the center’s digital archives. A 1940s photo of the center’s exterior, seemingly normal, held something else — a crouched figure staring out from

the corner of the window.

“We just don’t know what it is,” Thomas said. “We know that Andre Smith had costume parties here, sometimes. It could very well be someone trying to scare someone … it could also be a monster. I was pretty creeped out by it.”

Thomas believes it almost looks like a man with a bag pulled over its head from a horror movie.

That photo, and others, will be on display at the center during the tour. It’s one thing to take a walk on the museum grounds during business hours. It’s quite another to visit in the dead of night — which is exactly when Thomas scheduled the haunted tours.

Groups of 10 people will take a 45-minute tour through the grounds with nothing but flashlights to guide the way. The tour starts with a basic overview of the national historic landmark’s past, including its journey to becoming a research studio, the history of each building and more. Then, the tour will turn to the spooky events that staff have been told about over the years. Thomas said she reached out to the many instructors that have been part of the center for 20 or 30 years to share their supernatural experiences.

But rather than the tour being just secondhand accounts, many of the tales come from what the staff have experienced in the last few years. Thomas said she’s received a number of late-night alarm calls where the building’s audio sensor picked up heavy breathing. It happens more times than she’s comfortable with.

Because the location is quite popular for events and weddings, only two days were scheduled for this month. But Thomas hope that they will be able to host weekly tours come next October.

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Thomas and other staff believe the spirit of J. André Smith, the founder of the center, still resides on the grounds. Smith, a renowned architect and artist, spent his final years building the art center and installed its signature high walls so he and his fellow artists could work on their art in privacy. He died in the building in 1959.

Some staff have sworn they have smelled cigar smoke — Smith was an avid smoker — in the building when no one is around. Others, including former executive director Andrea Bailey Cox, claim to have even seen the former founder. One constant, though, is that these events occur during times of great stress.

“Last year when we came back from the hurricanes and everything was kind of a huge mess on campus, I had an experience where I saw and smelled smoke and nobody was there,” Thomas said. “Right after when we went through the merger of the historical society and the Maitland art center, somebody had an André Smith sighting.”

Developing a community Bronce Stephenson, Winter Park’s new director of planning and community development, is looking to help guide the city into the future.

There are a lot of facets that go into making a city, a city.

It requires constant evolution and upkeep, as well as short- and long-term planning.

In Winter Park, those tasks now are the responsibility of Bronce Stephenson, the city’s new director of planning and community development.

And although the Oklahoma native is new to the area, Winter Park already is beginning to feel like home.

“The adjustment has been really easy for our family,” Stephenson said. “We knew this place was a fit for us, and the last two weeks have really shown us that — we’ve just hit the ground running.”

Stephenson arrived to Winter Park Oct. 4 after a two-day long

journey from Owasso, Oklahoma — which sits just outside of Tulsa.

Now some will ask, “How do you go from Oklahoma to Florida?” Well, the answer is pretty simple. Before having kids, the Stephensons took trips to the Keys whenever they could. They fell in love with the state.

But before he made his move official this month to take the Winter Park position, Stephenson worked his way through city government in both California and his native Oklahoma.

After graduating from San Diego State University in 2007, Stephenson started as an intern for the city of Del Mar in California before eventually taking over as the assistant planner.

“It’s just right on the coast, and it’s a beautiful place — got the opportunity to grow there and do a couple of different positions

“I really just enjoy here that the planning process is really a big part of all the big projects going on.

and really haven’t looked back ever since,” Stephenson said. “It’s funny, because in college, I didn’t know I wanted to be a city planner.

But once I got the internship and started in the planning department, it’s really felt like the perfect mix of design, engineering and critical thinking and public involvement that I love.”

After two years in Del Mar, a planner job in Stillwater, Oklahoma, opened in 2009 — offering Stephenson his first chance at leading the way for a city.

There, he coordinated and oversaw all the city’s planning, which included zoning/subdivision administration and the development review process.

Two years later, Stephenson made his way over to Owasso to serve as a city plannerT:10.375” before moving into

the role of director of community development — where he stayed for seven years before arriving to Winter Park.

“We were a fast-growing city where a lot of what I oversaw was the building department, code enforcement and planning,” Stephenson said. “But my passion has always been downtown, main street development and redevelopment.”

That love for helping to bolster downtown areas was one of several reasons why the opening in Winter Park was so appealing.

“I got to come out first for the interview, and I just sent pictures that didn’t do this place justice, and said, ‘I can’t even believe I’m being considered for a place like this,’” Stephenson said. “Then she (my wife) came out with me

about a month ago and met with the city manager and some of the staff here, and took a tour around Winter Park for a couple of days.

It wasn’t even a question — we both knew it’s where we wanted to be.”

Winter Park has a treat for you.

The city’s Family Fun Program will host Winter Park’s eighth annual Pumpkins & Munchkins Trick-or-Treat Trail Wednesday, Oct. 31 at Shady Park, next to the Winter Park Community Center, 721 W. New England Ave. Young Winter Parkers and their families can expect ghoulish carnival games, bounce houses, a DJ, a balloon artist, a costume contest and, of course, the Trick-orTreat Trail at this free event.

The trick-or-treat pathway follows the sidewalk around the outside of the Winter Park Community Center and features six themed stations where children can grab their candy from staff members in costumes.

“What we do is we do this nonscary Trick-or-Treat trail, which allows kids from the neighborhood and the surrounding areas to know that they’re getting good candy and stuff from the Community Center so they can feel a little safer about their Halloween activities,” Recreation and Family Services Manager Cathleen Daus said.

It’s a special holiday event that has evolved over the years — from just a Trick-or-Treat Trail to a complete Halloween experience.

New this year are the balloon artist and the kid crafts area, where children will have a chance to make some colorful magnet picture frames.

The event came from the desire to provide families with a safe place to get the Halloween experience – instead of wandering through neighborhoods, Daus said.

“We started with this non-scary Trick-or-Treat Trail, and it probably brought in about 300 people the first year. We’re now getting somewhere between 1,000 and 1,500 people come through that trail in two hours. It just kept increasing every year, and we just get a lot of compliments that we buy the good candy, and we make sure you wouldn’t want to go anywhere else. That way you’re just so much safer.”

Winter Park Director of Communications Clarissa Howard said the event also makes it much easier on the parents. “(Kids) can’t last very long as far as trick-or-treating — they get tired real quick, and they really don’t want that much candy,” Howard said. “But here, they’ll get candy but also break it up with all kinds of other arts and crafts activities. So not only for parents is it safe, but it also helps balance out that trail part.”

Halloween is always a fun holiday to celebrate at the Community Center, Daus said.

“It was done specifically for the kids in this area to have a really good time,” she said. “(Families) can expect to get lots of great candy and to have some good fun entertainment and a lot of interaction with our staff. That way it makes Halloween not so scary for the little guys — just fun.”

iener dogs and their owners packed Lake Lily Park in Maitland Saturday, Oct. 20, to celebrate the seventh annual Wienerfest.

Put on by Florida Dachshund Rescue, the event — which ran from 10 to 4 p.m. — included fun dog races, a costume contest, food trucks and dog-specific vendors selling merchandise.

It’s cold backstage in the Linda Chapin Theater, but that’s fine.

Ballet dancer Sasha De Sola has to warm up anyway.

Between a towering hallway of dark curtains just feet away from stage right, De Sola practices her craft while wearing a black tutu with elegant gold trim.

She hops in place for a moment before stretching her joints. Feet wrapped in silk extend straight out, carrying her entire body weight on her toes. She flexes her feet up and down in a crisscross pattern – her heels kissing the ground for just a second at a time.

The routine almost resembles the pregame warmup of a professional athlete, and that’s not far from the reality of being a worldrenowned ballet dancer, De Sola said. It could even be an understatement.

“We’re trained to make it look easy,” she said.

“I would train six hours a day from the age of 11 on. … It’s difficult on the body.”

Later that day she would be performing in front of 2,600 people.

But this isn’t just any audience – it’s her hometown crowd.

It’s been four years, but she’s finally come home.

De Sola showcased her ballet skills alongside partner Max Cauthorn on Saturday, June 24 at the World Ballet Competition’s Gala Performance, performing “Black Swan pas de deux” from “Swan Lake” at the Orange County Convention Center.

The 27-year-old knows the Linda Chapin Theater and its backstage well – she grew up performing numerous ballet dances there. She was born in Winter Park Memorial Hospital and grew up not far away in Winter Springs.

But Central Florida isn’t just her home, it’s where she discovered her passion for dance.

Flying into Orlando from where she currently lives in San Francisco, the memories came flooding back for De Sola.

“It felt sort of surreal,” she said.

“Just even getting on 417, it’s very nostalgic. It’s a really good feeling to be back.”

The controversial ordinance will be ultimately decided upon on July 10.

Making the call A collaboration between Full Sail and Rollins College is giving students such as Taylor Schaub a chance to become the next great sportscaster.

In the world of sports, incredible highlights can be found on a daily basis.

But when these moments combine with a great sports call, they can transcend the field.

Calls such as Joe Starkey frantically shouting, “The band is out on the field! He’s going to go into the end zone!” during the 1982 matchup between Cal and Stanford made a crazy ending even more memorable.

Now — thanks in collaboration with Rollins College Athletics — students in Full Sail’s Dan Patrick School of Sportscasting have the chance to learn what it takes to make those big (and small) calls from the booth.

“It’s an awesome opportunity for them, because the one thing that Full Sail doesn’t have is athletics,” said program director and Rollins alum Gus Ramsey. “When I was at Rollins, I went to the radio station and signed up, and I broadcast all the games. It was just a great opportunity just to get the

reps and to be in a live broadcast situation.”

From volleyball to baseball to lacrosse, the students in the Full Sail program will lend their voices to calling 150 Rollins’ home games.

The collaboration will give students the chance to get real experience, and the Rollins athletic department will get help calling games.

It’s the perfect set up for students such as Taylor Schaub, who are looking to become career sportscasters. Although unlike many, Schaub’s love for journalism started pretty early.

“My dad is a reporter for a local CBS affiliate in San Francisco, and my mom was producer for ABC, so I kind of grew up in this whole journalism scene,” Schaub said. “I can remember being 4 years old

and going in the news van when he was going to go cover a story. I was completely immersed in all of it as a kid.”

Growing up just outside of a sports loving city such as San Francisco helped fuel his love for the field of sports journalism, and Schaub decided to make a tremendous leap around nine months ago.

After taking a tour of campus and talking to Ramsey about the program, Schaub was hooked.

In the last several months, Schaub and his classmates have begun to learn the intricacies of the trade. They have taken classes on how to handle being in front of a camera and attended talks from some of ESPN’s biggest names — Sage Steel, Jay Harris, Jeremy Schapp — on how to make it in sportscasting.

Leading up to his first call — Rollins volleyball’s first home match of the season — Schaub spent hours going over what he had learned while also learning as much as he could about the team and the game of volleyball itself. Up until that day, his understanding of the sport was limited, he said.

Although not being familiar with a sports team may be a challenge in and of itself, it also can be a tremendous help to push students to be better, Ramsey said.

“The advantage I had is I went to the school — I knew the coaches and I knew the players, so I could go on the air and talk knowledgeably about them because I was in class with some of them and hung out with some of them,” Ramsey said.

“My students don’t have that luxury, but in some ways that’s better, because they now have to do more research and prepare harder.”

As he continues through the program, Schaub and the others at Full Sail still have more work to do.

“I want to tell stories,” Schaub said. “I want to go out there wherever I get a job — whether that’s doing play-by-play or hosting a radio show. And I want to tell stories, because that’s the thing that gets hammered over and over again in this program — that we are storytellers. A senior on the Winter Park boys golf team, Drew Lanier is one of the top golfers in Orange County and is looking to help the Wildcats make a strong postseason run. But when he’s not out on the court, you’re likely to find Lanier out on the basketball court with his friends.

How old were you when you first got into golf, and how did you get into it?

I started playing golf seriously when I went into eighth grade.

I was at Orangewood Christian at the time and made that team as an eighth-grader on the varsity team. Then I transferred over to Winter Park High School my sophomore year. I just fell in love with it (golf).

Has golf always been your sport of choice?

I did play baseball, probably as my No. 1 sport up until eighth grade — 13 or 14 years old.

What’s been a highlight for you playing high school golf?

I’d say competing at states the past two years.

We should be able to get there this year.

Playing at states under that pressure and environment is pretty fun.

What’s the best advice that you’ve ever been given by coach Rob Robinson?

He’s always saying, “One shot at a time.” You have to be able to execute in that moment and not really think about anything else. Once you step into the shot, you have to zero in.

What has been the biggest challenge you’ve had to face when it comes to golf?

I’d say the rounds where you don’t start out as well — the rounds where you get over par early. That’s probably the biggest challenge, because once you put yourself in a hole to start the round, it’s hard to get out of it.

Which part of your game would you say is the strongest?

I’d say my chipping is probably the strongest of my game.

a lot of rounds lately where I haven’t hit a lot of greens, but my short game is working.

What have been some goals for you this season?

Our team has one goal, and that’s to win the state title as a team and get a ring. As a senior, that would be one of the coolest things that I ever could do.

Are you a cat or a dog person?

I’m a dog person, because I have beautiful yellow labrador retriever named Lucy. I got her eight to 12 years ago, and she is awesome. Just a people’s dog.

Do you have a favorite golfer you admire?

I think my favorite golfer is Jordan Spieth, just because of the way he carries himself and the way he treats people. He has the mindset that you want to have on the golf course.

When you’re not golfing, what do you like to do in your spare time?

I play basketball with my friends a lot. A lot of times, we’re just going up to Maitland Community Park to shoot some hoops.

inter Park residents looking to get their soul music fix are in luck. Greta Pope and the Spaniels Forever will be delivering an hour-and-a-half of Motown Music with their “Motown … The Spirit of Motor City” performance Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Winter Park Playhouse.

This won’t be the first time Pope, a lifelong vocalist who has performed throughout Europe, South America, the Caribbean and more, has performed at the playhouse. She sang at a cabaret performance a few years ago.

This time, though, is a more extravagant affair. Pope will be singing alongside the Spaniels Forever, a 1950s doo-wop group

that still has one of the original members, as part of her Motown tour.

“We don’t use a piano, we don’t use a bass, we don’t use drums, it’s all vocal with a guitar,” Pope said.

“It’s rhythmic, it’s fantastic.”

It’s all part of their Motown tour during which they perform renditions of classic Motownera songs from Marvin Gaye, the Supremes, Diana Ross and many more. The Motown sound is a distinct flavor of 1960s pop and soul music immortalized by performers such as Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles and others.

Pope, a Chicago resident, has a master’s degree in vocal performance as well as a doctoral degree in business administration.

She has performed in a variety of genres, including jazz, opera and blues, and shared the stage with figures such as Dick Van Dyke, Wynonna Judd and Boy George. When not performing

with a group, she often hits the road for solo shows.

Pope’s foray into Motown is a recent development.

“No matter what generation people are, people have heard this music” she said. “People know who Diana Ross is, they know who the Temptations are. … It’s feelgood music; it’s positive music. It talks about love and respect — all of the things we’re missing a little bit in our society today. People leave the theater feeling great.

They’ve heard music they haven’t heard in many years.”

What excites her the most about traveling and performing, though, are the people she meets along the way.

“I don’t think it matters where you go — people are welcoming and kind and enthusiastic the world over,” Pope said. “Even if there’s a language barrier, people are kind. … It’s been my experience that people are wonderful.

Music is certainly an international language, I know people say that all the time, but it truly is. It bridges a gap between culture and language.”

he Gallery at Mills Park turned into a charitable masquerade and runway show Saturday, Oct. 6, for the Harbor House of Central Florida’s Masquerade Fundraiser. Guests donned intricate masks and mingled over cocktails before stepping back to watch an elegant fashion show near the end of the night. The money raised for the Harbor House nonprofit, which was around $3,000, went toward victims of domestic abuse.
