For many in the Windermere Community who shopped at the Publix in the Lakeside Village Center, Jose Andres Sanchez truly made shopping a pleasure.

Sanchez, 58, a Windermere resident, worked at the Publix for four years as a bagger and absolutely loved his job, which he made evident with the kind, genuine smile he offered all customers.

His friendly face became a staple at the Publix, causing many in the

NEWS BRIEF COMPTROLLER INTRODUCES ANTI-FRAUD PROGRAM Orange County residents can utilize a property fraudalert program through the Orange County comptroller office.

According to the FBI, property and mortgage fraud is the fastest growing white-collar crime. The county’s new property fraud-alert system helps to protect property from fraud by monitoring documents such as liens, deeds and mortgages that are recorded in the Orange County official records.

By signing up for property fraud alerts, Orange County residents will receive notification by email or telephone whenever a document with their name on it is recorded in the county.

“Too many Central Florida residents are victims of cybercriminals,” Orange County Comptroller Phil Diamond said. “This free new service will help Orange County residents protect themselves from property fraud.”

How about a beer to quench your thirst and to benefit a nonprofit at the same time?

Special Olympics Florida and the Crooked Can Brewing Company, in downtown Winter Garden, are partnering Oct. 25 through Nov. 3 to give area beer fans a chance to support the local chapter of the national organization and raise awareness of its athletes.

“This is the first year that we’ve done something with Crooked Can, but we’re really excited about it,” said Lori Newcomb, vice president of development for Special Olympics Florida. “We approached them, and they were absolutely open to doing something with us. … They’re a great local partner.”

Two of Crooked Can’s specialty beers are temporarily being renamed to fall in line with the mission of Special Olympics: to provide year-round sports training and competition in Olympictype sports for people with intellectual disabilities, giving them opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage and experience joy.

On Thursday, Oct. 25, Crooked Can and the Plant Street Market are offering a special $20 ticket for a pizza from Michael Ali’s Coal Fired Pizza and two beers. From Oct. 25 through Saturday, Nov. 3, $1 from each specialty beer purchase will be donated to Special Olympics Florida.

“We have many athletes that reside in the West Orange area, and we are excited for Crooked Can’s involvement that will contribute to Special Olympics Florida, not only in raising funds for our athletes but also community support of our mission,” Newcomb said.

the original Windermere location on Chase Road. This is the second academy in the Windermere area, and according to its website, the new center will work with the Chase Road location to provide quality early-childhood care and education to families in the Windermere, Horizon West and Winter Garden communities.

Both Windermere-area locations will serve Sunset Park, Bay Lake, Independence and Keene’s Crossing elementary schools.

“I think originally Windermere was going to be the only school in that particular region,” said Linzi Hansla, operations manager for Ladybird Academy. “However, it’s a very up-and-coming area with a lot of growth and new families coming in and we honestly have a massive need for childcare in that area.

“It’s difficult for our sole Windermere location to take in all the children that need care right now,” she said. “We have a waitlist for every single age group at that school and are always full. As soon as we open up our VPK, it literally fills up within a couple of weeks.

It’s a very needed school right now. … We have a Winter Garden location, which is several miles down the road, but sometimes, it’s not convenient for our families so they’re still going on the waitlist.

Both of those schools (Windermere and Winter Garden) are at capacity.”

County documents show that the total site area is 1.94 acres, with a 12,989-square-foot academy building, a 13,069-square-foot playground area and 39 parking spaces. It is bordered by Overstreet Road to the north and Bentonshire Avenue to the east. Hansla added the new location also will include different enrichment rooms, and the playground is going to be different than the one at the existing Windermere location.

There are currently 16 other locations in Central Florida, with three — including Wickham Park, Ocoee and St. Cloud — under construction. Additionally, there are three locations opening soon in Jacksonville and Tampa, one existing location in south Florida and one coming soon to Dallas, Texas.

“We’re looking forward to be able to take new enrollments, take new students in and continue to provide quality care in the Windermere region but also being able to offer new enrichment rooms, a discovery zone and an outside water-play area,” Hansla said.

community to mourn his recent passing. Sanchez, who would walk to and from work for his shifts, died in a pedestrian accident Friday, Oct. 12 while crossing Winter Garden Vineland Road.

The news shocked many, and a modest memorial was set up in front of the store allowing community members to offer their condolences and share memories with his family.

His sister, Angeles Shoultz, who served as his caretaker along with her husband, Jim, also was shocked to hear what happened to her brother, especially after having survived another traffic accident in 1998 that proved fatal for his parents, Jose Jesus Sanchez Figuera and Modesta Martinez.

After that accident in 2000, his sister and older brother helped him move to the United States to start anew, Shoultz said.

“When they told me what happened, I couldn’t believe it,” Angeles Shoultz said. “He was a special person. And I’m not saying that just because he was my brother.

Everyone loved him, and he loved everyone.”

Sanchez hugged everybody, even strangers, she said. He was known for never hesitating to express his affection and was kind to everyone he met. He loved interacting with people.

“He had an incredible capability to connect with people,” his sister said. “In Venezuela, he was friends with all the other kids in the neighborhood where we grew up. And he would keep in touch with everyone he met during his entire life using the internet. He knew the details of everything going on in their lives as if he had just spoken with them yesterday. He really loved people, and I guess that’s why he was so happy working at Publix — it gave him the opportunity to connect with people.”

Sanchez also loved music, Shoultz said. He often brought his computer and speakers to perform

Windermere High School’s choir students have been invited to perform at one of the most well known concert halls in the world: Carnegie Hall.

Forty-four Windermere High choir students will fly to New York to perform at the worldfamous concert venue on April 26 under the direction of renowned composer Z. Randall Stroope, said Linda Boot, the school’s choral director.

He could play almost any instrument you gave him, but particularly enjoyed the keyboard and the cuatro, a popular LatinAmerican instrument, she added. And he would play anything from Venezuelan joropo to salsa to music from the American band Earth, Wind and Fire.

“He was very passionate about music,” Shoultz said. “He was born with some learning disabilities, mostly with numbers, but he worked very hard with my parents to try and overcome those disabilities and went to a special education school in Venezuela. And with music, he was gifted. He could play any sound by ear. He would play the keyboard and the cuatro.

He never understood how to formally write music, but he could play a song just by hearing it.”

“The event is put on by Choirs of America, and they host choirs there every spring and bring in world-famous conductors to conduct these choirs,” she said.

“The students will be singing a commissioned piece that’s written specifically for them and will be performed by them. So it’s basically making its debut at Carnegie Hall, and it will be by composer Z. Randall Stroope, who is a really prolific composer.”

“There’s a saying that goes, ‘How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

Practice, practice, practice,’ but right now we’re saying, ‘How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Fundraise, fundraise, fundraise,’” she said with a laugh.

Among other events, the choir will have a concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 1, the proceeds of which will go toward fundraising for the trip, Boot said. The choir also will be selling Christmas trees starting Thanksgiving weekend through Dec. 23, and hold a holiday concert at 8 p.m. Dec. 11. she said.

There also are plans to host a collaborative benefit concert in late January with Disney performers.

“It’s really going to be a cool experience for them,” she said.

“Being able to go to New York is awesome in itself, and getting to work with a world-class composer is just a win-win-win.”

Marilyn Hattaway has been with West Orange Habitat for Humanity for fewer than two years, but it’s been a jam-packed time for her and her board members.

The organization’s biggest supporters and volunteers have seen a lot of progress in that time. WOHFH’s newest affordable-housing community, Green Oaks Row, is well under construction — and its first partner family moved in to one of the homes a few weeks ago. Soon, two more families will call east Winter Garden home.

Hattaway, the organization’s director of development, and the board also took on one of their newest endeavors last year for the first time — its annual WOHFH fundraising event, Rock the House.

There is much success to be celebrated and happy tears to be shed, and that’s exactly what drew Hattaway to WOHFH in March 2017. She previously served for two years with Habitat for Humanity of Seminole County & Greater Apopka, and before that was the executive director for 10 years with Hospice of the Comforter.

“It was great work,” she said.

“I love the mission of hospice

tremendously and still do, but I wanted to experience tears of joy. I volunteered with Habitat before and when the position with (West Orange) came up, they were poised for such growth. This (Habitat) community was growing, because it supported Habitat for so long and I just thought this would be awesome to come and build here — build a team, build fundraising, build events and build a whole community of people to push our mission out there.”

Another reason that spurs Hattaway on to serve with Habitat is the need for affordable housing in the Central Florida area.

“The need for affordable housing is tremendous,” she said.

“Orlando is tied with Las Vegas for the least attractive environment for affordable housing.

That’s terrible. Metro Orlando is ranked third nationally for lack of housing, for extremely lowincome residents. There are a lot of reasons for that, but one is low-wage employment growth is not keeping up with rent. The rent isn’t matching what the employers are paying. Affordability struggles have even crept further into the mainstream, affecting moderate-income households, as well.”

Working with WOHFH, she said, gives her the chance to do what she loves most and connect people with each other. Connecting people who love to make a difference with people who really need the help is something Habitat does well, and the connections and relationships that

are built through the organization serve as catalysts for getting the community involved.

It’s also why WOHFH is preparing for its second Rock the House event, which encourages community members and businesses to sponsor tables and compete for prizes for the best themes. But the real purpose behind the event is to raise funds and community support in order to continue building local communities such as Green Oaks Row — and to see those happy tears.

“Rock the House is mostly a board- and volunteer-led event,” she said. “Our first goal is to share the need and importance of affordable housing and how West Orange Habitat is answering that call, and then to get as many people involved in giving and volunteering as possible. It’s a fundraising event, and that’s our optimal goal, but really, we just want to share the message that the need is great here in West Orange County for affordable housing, and we want to encourage as many people as we can.”

Although Hattaway plays a large part in the organization, events like Rock the House could not go on without the tireless effort, time and dedication from her board members and volunteers.

“Pam Billue — she’s been active with Habitat for a while but has been on our board for almost a year, and I cannot tell you how many hours she’s put into it,” Hattaway said. “She has been a board chair of Rock

Keith was born Jan. 30, 1976, to John Dale Still and Virginia Morris Paice. He was a graduate of West Orange High School, Class of 1995, and enjoyed spending time with his family and taking care of his many freshwater aquariums.

Keith was a loving father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and

friend and was preceded in death by his father.

mother, Virginia Morris Paice; stepfather, Robert William Paice; his memaw, Robbie Lee Morris; his brothers, Kevin Michael Still, Brandon Dale Still, Sean Matthew Still; and his step-siblings, Jason Eric Paice and Alicia Danielle Spore; as well as countless family and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home in Winter Garden.

Mattie was preceded in death by husband, Grady Whitehurst; sisters, Raynell and Rosie Rushing; and brother, Udell Rushing.

She is survived by son, Jimmie Frank Whitehurst; daughter, Glenda S. Futch and her husband, James; sister, Virginia Cawthorn, of Virginia; and brother, Rex Rushing, of Ocoee, Florida. Mattie is also survived by seven grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Jose Andres Sanchez, of Windermere, Florida, died Friday, Oct. 12, 2018. He was 58.

Jose was born Aug. 28, 1960, in Caracas, Venezuela. His late parents were Jose Jesus Sanchez Figuera and Modesta Martinez.

During the last four years, he worked at Publix in the customer service area. Music and people were his passions. He brought smiles to the faces of all who knew him and loved being a DJ at any social event.

He is survived by his sister, Angeles Shoultz; and his brother, Jose Jesus Sanchez; as well as his sister-in-law, Blanca Sanchez; his brother-in-law, Jim Shoultz; and nephews and nieces whom he loved deeply (Angelina, Oscar,

Emmanuel, Daniela, Abraham, Michelle, Andrea, Sergio and Gabriela).

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at Woodlawn Memorial Park & Funeral Home, 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha, Florida.

Former LAX rivals reunite on UCF women’s team The UCF Women’s Lacrosse club team has a handful of alumni from West Orange High and Olympia High and is coached by former Warrior coach Mary Hopkins.

When Alisa “A.J.” Silverstein found out Mary Hopkins — her lacrosse coach during her playing career at West Orange High — would be taking over the women’s club program at UCF, she was pretty excited to tell her teammates what to expect from their new coach.

“I told them to be ready to have fun — (Hopkins) always knows

how to bring fun to practice,” Silverstein said.

At the time, Silverstein — currently a junior — was a rising sophomore. Hopkins, who lives in Ocoee and had been at West Orange High for two decades, is now in her second year at the helm for the Knights.

It was an exciting reunion, to be sure, but others — such as Olympia

Individually, Caroline Hwang and Victoria Hwang finished in a three-way tie for third place, with Freedom’s Emily Staples turning in a 74 on the day.

The winter sports season has arrived with the beginning of practice Oct. 22 for boys and girls soccer. The preseason for soccer begins Nov. 5, and the regular season begins Nov. 12.

As a club team at UCF, the women’s lacrosse program gets no funding from the school and has to pay its way to road trips such as the one it recently took to South Carolina.

Dr. Phillips (21-6) defeated Olympia in a 25-20, 25-19, 25-12 sweep to win its second district championship in three years and 12th in program history.

District drama District tournaments in girls volleyball last week meant the end of the season for some local teams — and a trip to the postseason for others.

D

istrict volleyball tournaments came and went last week, with five local teams punching tickets to the regional playoffs and one claiming a district title.

Dr. Phillips (21-6) topped rival Olympia in the FHSAA Class 9A, District 5 Tournament Oct. 18, sweeping the Titans to earn a trip back to the postseason after missing out in 2017.

A year ago, district seeding had the Panthers and Titans matched up in the district semifinal as opposed to the district final.

That meant that only one of the two teams could advance to the district final — and the regional playoffs. That ended up being Olympia, which advanced all the SEE VOLLEYBALL PAGE 24

As has been expected dating back to the summer, the Florida High School Athletic Association’s Board of Directors meeting Oct. 29 likely includes a vote concerning several team sports, excluding football.

What that proposal looks like, though, has changed. The proposal that passed 9-1 at last week’s FHSAA Athletic Directors Advisory Committee meeting is similar to the original version but with some significant differences.

In it, classifications in several sports — including baseball, softball, girls volleyball and boys and girls basketball — would be reduced from nine to seven (six revised classifications plus the existing rural classification, which will remain as is).

That part remained unchanged, but districts — eliminated in the original proposal —will remain.

However, schools would not be required to play regular-season district contests. Instead, district tournaments would be seeded

by MaxPreps rankings. With the elimination of mandatory district games, the hope is district sizes — which vary wildly in the current setup — will be more uniform, because the only mandated travel would be for district tournaments.

Also, instead of the current system in which district champions and runners-up advance to the postseason, only the four district champions in a region would SEE BIG PAGE 24

earn an automatic berth. The other four playoff berths (each region would have eight playoff teams) would be awarded on an at-large basis, again based on MaxPreps. This is similar to the change made with football two seasons ago.

Most significantly, classifications would remain based on student enrollment. An earlier proposal had those based on MaxPreps rankings from the previous two seasons. This eliminates one of the prominent features of the original idea, which was a 32-team

The team is doing well this fall. What’s it like to be a part of it?

It’s honestly awesome. We have this guy, Carter Rowe, he transferred in. Before he got here, we had a solid five (runners), but he’s doing really (well) for us right now. It’s just awesome to be part of this team, definitely.

Tell us about how the season has gone for you as an individual.

Right now, my fastest time this season is 16:21 (now 16:15). I feel like I’ve set up some pretty high goals for myself — my goal is to run at least a 15:50. So, I’m working toward that, and I’ve definitely been putting in a lot of work in practice, and I’m waiting for it to fall into place.

What is your mental approach before and during a race?

Before a race, I try to listen to music to get in the zone and focus. Throughout the week, I make sure I’m grinding at the beginning of the week. … During the race, my goal is to stay with the front pack, and I think that if I do that the whole race, I call that a pretty good race.

What did you learn from your experience at state in track and cross-country as a sophomore?

Definitely not to underestimate anyone and to always stay focused.

You run several events in track and cross-country. Which is your best?

I definitely feel like the mile is my strongest event. … I had an insane race at districts (this past spring) for the mile, and I went 4:18 — it was ridiculous.

I couldn’t believe it myself.

High alumnae Kim Goic, Casey Zimmerman and Brittney and Ashley Matthews — were understandably a little skeptical.

“At first (the Olympia alumni) were kind of hesitant — we were like, ‘She’s from West Orange,’” said Goic, also a junior. “But then we really liked her. She’s an awesome coach, and she’s helped us improve.”

Indeed, Hopkins’ role as the coach of the club program at UCF is one of several ways in which the team has deep roots in the area.

In addition to players who went to West Orange and Olympia, the team features student-athletes from Timber Creek, East Ridge, Lake Minneola, Edgewater and Hagerty, among others.

“The twins, Ashley and Brittney, I actually played with them in middle school (in club lacrosse), and I’ve known them since kindergarten,” Silverstein said. “It’s just really cool to be able to play with them again and to be able to play with people like Kim and Casey, whom I played against in high school and I remember. It’s really weird, at the same time, because I remember wanting to beat them so bad, and now we’re all really good friends.”

The program at UCF formerly was coached by Hopkins’ husband, Tom, and has had plenty of success. Tom Hopkins was a conference coach of the year twice and a national coach of the year once, and his teams have finished as high as fourth in the nation at the club level.

What do you like about going to Windermere High?

I feel like the lunch room is pretty nice — definitely like the lunch room. The teachers, I feel like, have your best interest at heart.

What would like to study in college?

I definitely want to go to college, and I’d like to study engineering — aerospace engineering or civil engineering. I’m definitely keeping my options open right now. … I wanted to make some money and was looking into the most highpaying jobs, and I thought engineering was pretty cool.

Which holiday are you looking forward to the most?

It’s between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Christmas, because I really want to do something for my mom and dad and get them something nice.

Thanksgiving because I think the team might be going up to a big meet in North Carolina.

compromise,” said West Orange High Athletic Director Jerry Shafer.

If the board of directors votes in favor of the revised proposal Oct. 29, it will be implemented for the 2019-20 school year.

Whatever the outcome of that meeting, athletics officials around the state have had kind words for the thorough manner with which the FHSAA has handled the process.

“The FHSAA really listened to people,” Shafer said. “From the executive director down, everyone listened — and you have to give them credit for that. They really were open to suggestions.”

Hopkins, Silverstein reunited

and I definitely love anything social studies related. … We had a test (recently), and I really liked going over John Adams’ presidency. A lot of people didn’t like him as our second president, but he had it a lot harder than George Washington did as our first president.

What’s your favorite subject in school?

I’m taking Advance Placement United States History,

spent most of the season ranked between fifth and 13th in the nation.

Part of the reason for that success is the ability of the program at UCF to offer some enticing options for local standouts who might otherwise go out of state to play for an NCAA program.

“If you’re an in-state kid, with Bright Futures and everything else piled together, you can pretty much go (to UCF) for free if you have the grades,” Mary Hopkins said.

For those who chose to stay close to home at UCF — where many of their parents are able to attend home games — they also are pleasantly surprised by a formidable level of competition.

“My freshman year, when I came, every day was really hard — and I wasn’t expecting that for a club team,” Goic said. “It really surprised me.”

The team operates as a campus club at UCF and has representatives — Silverstein, for instance, is the president of the club. Those reps are responsible for reserving practice space and time at the school’s turf intramural fields, and the team does its fundraising for travel, equipment and other expenses on its own.

That is not to mention that most of the girls have jobs, internships and a full course load, as well.

“We talk to them about time management constantly,” Hopkins said. “It’s a lot to manage, and it has to be somebody who is really dedicated.”

The local women are just that, though, and excited to have a connective thread between their varsity and collegiate careers.

“It’s nice to bring a little piece of high-school lacrosse with me,” Silverstein said.

For Dr. Phillips coach Danny Eleutiza and his program, it was a humbling experience that motivated them this fall.

“When we left (the district tournament) last year, especially me as a coach, I had a weird feeling,” Eleutiza said. “I knew we were going to be back here in the (district) finals, and I’m proud of them. They wanted to win.”

The Windermere Wolverines (18-5) finished as district runners-up for the second time in the program’s two years of existence and earned its second playoff appearance. The Wol-

verines won district quarterfinal and semifinal games against West Port and Lake Howell before falling to undefeated East Ridge in the district final in a five-set thriller.

Joining the Wolverines as teams that advanced as district runners-up were Olympia (1313), The First Academy (17-10) and Foundation Academy (16-8).

“It turned out, we won them all, and here we go right into the playoffs and the kids said, ‘It’s win or go home now.’ So you’re going to see a whole new level of intensity.”

Meanwhile, the Bears have dropped seven consecutive games, allowing 42.9 points per game in the process.

LAKE HIGHLAND PREP (4-4) AT THE FIRST ACADEMY (7-0) Last year’s meeting of these programs saw the Royals squeak out a 21-14 win the road.

This time, the Highlanders will make the trip to southwest Orlando. Lake Highland has struggled offensively — the Highlanders have averaged just 16.3 points per game and have been shut out three times this fall. Meanwhile, the Royals have scored an average of 44.8 points per game spanning the team’s last five wins.

WEST OAKS ACADEMY (4-3) AT FOUNDATION ACADEMY (6-2) This game, originally scheduled as a road game for the Lions, will be played at Foundation Academy. West Oaks averages 30 points per game and has an offense keyed by Demetrius Cox, who is averaging 110 rushing yards per game this fall. Foundation is looking to bounce back after consecutive losses that preceded its bye week.

he road there was certainly a little different than it has been in the past, but the end result was the same.

The Dr. Phillips Panthers once again are champions of FHSAA Class 9A, District 5.

The Panthers (4-5, 3-0) earned the home playoff game in the regional quarterfinals, which comes with a district title, for an 11th consecutive year by pulling away from rival Olympia for a 44-13 victory Oct. 19.

Five interceptions helped bolster Dr. Phillips in its big win — a school record for interceptions in one game. After the team’s early-season struggles — which included turnover issues on offense and an inability to create turnovers on defense — the Panthers have seen a two-week stretch where they have benefited from 10 turnovers while losing only one.

“I’m very proud of the guys,” head coach Rodney Wells said.

“We took some lumps — we played bad football. We made an emphasis the last couple weeks about ball control and getting turnovers on the defensive side. It’s great to see what you practice come to fruition in the game.”

Japerri Powell scored two touchdowns, and Stephen Dix had a pick-six interception for at touchdown in the victory.

varsity seniors for a photo. The group then took a few moments to huddle at midfield following the Lakers’ final on-campus home game of the 2018 season.

“This is such an unbelievable group of seniors,” Doss said Friday after the Lakers completed an undefeated regular season by trouncing visiting Spring Hill Bishop McLaughlin 54-6 on Homecoming/Senior Night.

“They’re so tight. They’re good friends, and they’ve been through a lot. As the season has gone on, they have absolutely taken over this team. And it shows, and I’m just so lucky to have those kids.”

Windermere Prep (8-0) wrote a similar script for the second consecutive week. The Lakers built a 44-0 halftime lead to start a running clock against Lake Mary Prep on Oct. 12, and

when senior Najji Allen scored from 50 yards on a well-executed trick play, it gave Windermere Prep a 39-0 advantage over Bishop McLaughlin (3-4) with 9:21 remaining in the second quarter.

Senior Justin Kirtland’s successful extra point gave WPS a 40-0 halftime lead over the Hurricanes. Joel Noel (34-yard run) and Adiel Aguiar (23-yard run) added touchdowns during the running-clock second half before Bishop McLaughlin closed out the scoring with just under five minutes remaining.
