hristy Daugherty is all about action.

The Ocoee resident and University of North Florida senior is working with the United Nation/Merit 360 program to end world hunger, and she wants to build a hydroponic farm at a deaf school in Haiti.

She is majoring in political science with a concentration in international studies; her minor is American Sign Language.

Merit360 sponsors two-week conferences featuring youth-led forums and is a major call to action concerning the United Nations’ 17 sustainable-development goals.

“It’s a program where young change-makers come together and brainstorm with projects on how we can better the world,” Daugherty said. “We have people from all different countries, and it’s a really great experience to solidify some of those plans that I’ve been making.”

Her desire is to improve the lives of Haitians.

“I want to incorporate aquaponic systems into the schools of Haiti to help reduce hunger while also teaching the children some opportunities on how to potentially get future jobs and business skills,” she said. “Once up and running, I want to see the schools set up a store to sell excess products and teach them some business lessons.”

A basic aquaponic system is about $3,000, Daugherty said. To build one from scratch — a do-

it-yourself system — would cost less.

“A very basic system in about 100 square feet can produce anywhere from 300 to 400 heads of lettuce and over 32 pounds of fish,” she said.

Her project currently is in the fundraising stage. She is in talks with a major aquaponic manufacturer in hopes it will sign on as a sponsor or partner to help get the system to Haiti.

Daugherty’s first experience in Haiti was in May 2017, when she traveled with the UNF Deaf Education program to an area outside Port-au-Prince and Leveque to teach deaf children for two weeks.

“While I was over there, I loved interacting with the children, but it was really heartbreaking for me when I saw that they were still rebuilding from the earthquake in 2010 and none of the children I was teaching knew when they were getting their next meal,” she said. “We were staying in an allinclusive resort that was safe with food and stuff, and it really bothered me that I would get a buffet for a meal three times a day when the people I was there to help and volunteer for didn’t know when they next time they would get a meal or clean water.”

She said she took snacks in her backpack to give to the residents.

The experience made an impact on her and gave her direction.

Winter Garden city commissioners on Sept. 27 approved the first reading of an ordinance that may affect future homeowners.

Ordinance 18-37 relates to the ability of property owners and contractors to hire private companies to review site plans and conduct building inspections of both commercial and residential developments to ensure they meet all building code requirements and safety standards.

Although property owners have long had the right to hire private providers for such services according to Florida’s building codes, it was only recently that they caught on, Winter Garden City Attorney Kurt Ardaman told commissioners.

“The law is actually about three or four years old, but now the contractors are figuring it out and saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to do this,’” Ardaman said.

In the view of the commission, the ability to hire private providers poses a potential risk to future homeowners, because contractors might hire private inspectors to avoid the city’s rigid inspection process, said Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer.

“We make sure that our inspectors are tough and that every house is built right and all the electrical is right,” Bollhoefer said. “Once a developer or a builder provides a private provider, he’s the one paying the guy that’s going to inspect the house. Now, hopefully, these private providers still do a good job, but we will no longer have direct control over this, so we can’t say with any certainty how well it’s been inspected.”

The ordinance establishes a permit-fee reduction for owners and contractors who choose to use private providers in lieu of local building officials — a statemandated discount.

And as a safeguard, it provides for a registration and audit system that requires private provid-

ers to register with the city and submit any relevant licenses and qualifications. Builders will not be allowed to hire a private provider that has not registered with the city’s building department, according to the ordinance.

City staff also will notify Winter Garden residents if a builder chooses to hire private providers in public meetings to forewarn residents, Bollhoefer said.

“It’s almost like bank robbers hiring their own police officers to stop them from robbing banks,” Bollhoefer said. “However, what we will do in the future is — if any builder chooses to do this and hire their own private inspectors — we will announce it in a public meeting, therefore any of our residents who are interested in buying a home here or future residents will at least know, or should know, that their homes have not been inspected by the city of Winter Garden inspectors.”

In the long run, it actually costs property owners and contractors more to hire private providers, but they might prefer it because of the easier inspection process, Bollhoefer added.

After some discussion, the commission reluctantly approved the first reading of the ordinance. The second reading was scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 11, but has since been postponed.

“We don’t like it, but our choices are limited,” said Winter Garden Mayor John Rees.

The founders of Tildenville Marketplace have created what they hope will be a destination place for artists and community members who want a space to do some creating of their own.

Business partners Tina LaVallee, Chris de Felice and Lana WilkenGies are calling this a “show-andtell” marketplace, where people not only can make art but also sell it. Or they can connect to Wi-Fi and hang out in one of the hammocks and swinging chairs or at the countertop to get some work done.

Coffee, tea and juice, fresh fruit and local restaurant items are available for purchase.

“We are looking for a café feel,” LaVallee said. “We just want to be a community center, an eclectic retail outlet that has the handmade feel.”

The retail area allows local artists who can’t afford their own studios or storefronts to rent space to sell their wares. LaVallee said they want to specialize in earth tones and natural materials. Fibers such as cotton, linen, burlap and bamboo are preferred, she said, as well as natural soaps, candles, clay and other items.

“We want the makers of Winter Garden to make Winter Garden with us,” LaVallee said.

large indention — in April, but she didn’t take measures until she felt the lump in her breast.

A trip to the doctor was followed by multiple tests and a biopsy.

“I received a phone call from my doctor on May 16 at 2:23 p.m. informing me that I had Stage 2 breast cancer,” Giddens said. “I remember the details so clearly, because my middle niece was a senior in high school and had her Senior Walkout day at school that afternoon, and my oldest niece had her college graduation ceremony

that evening. I was thinking, ‘How was I going to keep it all together and not ruin this day of celebration for my family?’”

STARTING TREATMENT

Giddens began chemotherapy in June, with treatment every two weeks.

“I (lost) my hair within the first two weeks of treatment, and that definitely was a shocker on how quickly it came out,” Giddens said.

“In a way, it’s kind of nice not having to worry about doing my hair every day. I either put my wig on, brush and go or decide which hat

looks best with my outfit.”

She is now in her second round and goes to the clinic every Thursday for her medication. When this treatment round is complete in six weeks, Giddens will have surgery followed by six weeks of radiation.

She said she has developed nephropathy in her hands, is fatigued and has been in the hospital several times.

“All I can do is take one day at a time and know that this is only for a season,” she said.

A recent Pink Out day with the elementary and high-school staff and students honored Giddens and several other women who have had cancer and paid tribute to the Leg-

“This was a 1920s Wawa,” de Felice said. “It had everything.”

The new inhabitants want to pay tribute to the 1928 store and are highlighting some of the original features, such as the old pot-bellied stove, display cubbies and the cork-lined walk-in freezer.

“I’m drawn to the nostalgia,” LaVallee said. “We really want the nostalgia. It’s about, ‘How much history can we bring in here?’”

Everyone gathered in the gymnasium and took a group photo of everyone in their pink attire. On the gym floor, the football players’ helmets were arranged in a circle, with pink pompons in the shape of a heart and blue and silver pompons creating her initials.

“Our athletic director announced that they had pink ribbon decals made that had my initials on them and that the players would be wearing them throughout the rest of the season to show their support,” Giddens said. “It took everything I had to hold back my emotions.”

Giddens is proud of her cheerleaders and their support and said they have been understanding of her ever-changing schedule. Two assistants, Anna Bustamante and Rachael Kirkpatrick, have helped her with coaching this year.

“I honestly don’t know what I would do without them,” Gidden said. “They definitely have been an answer to my prayers through all this.”

Giddens has been a member of the Legacy High team for five years, starting out as a teacher’s assistant for two years at the elementary school level. She lives in Winter Garden with her husband, Mike. She counts her blessings to have such a great support system.

“You hear of women being diagnosed with breast cancer every day, but I never would have thought I would be one of them,” Giddens said. “(It) brings a whole new meaning to your life and how precious it is — along with cherishing every moment with the ones you care about and love.”

Dear Editor: As a state trooper, you have contact with many people, and as time goes by, your memory fades on events. Sometimes, you may remember a face — but that’s all.

As a recipient of a traffic citation, you will remember exactly what happened and the time, place and details of what was said.

After serving 30 years with the Florida Highway Patrol — my first 10 years was spent in West Orange County (i.e.

Pine Hills, Ocoee and Winter Garden), I was described as business-like. At the end of my career, after promotions and transfers, I returned to West Orange County and retired.

Often, I visit a local restaurant for breakfast. Most small-town cafes have a large table populated with local business leaders, etc. Most are gray-headed. I was summoned to sit with them, because I fit in. There were about five people sitting at the table.

The table master said, “Does everyone know who this is?”

Some did and some didn’t.

He commenced to introduce me with a big grin and said, “Did any of you get a ticket from Mr. Hagler back in the day?”

Two of the five sheepishly raised their hand. I responded that maybe I am responsible for you sitting here today. They smiled and nodded in agreement.

My barber is a gray-headed fellow who has been in the same location for a long time. When I

come in for a haircut, he would often introduce me to his customers — mostly senior-citizen types — saying, “Do any of you remember this fellow?”

Then he would ask if they ever got a ticket from me. Two or three would nod in the affirmative. Most told me exactly where and what they did to get a ticket. I asked if they paid the ticket or pled not guilty. Most said they paid the ticket.

The moral of this story: As a law-enforcement officer and especially if you are a trooper assigned to small towns, people tend to remember every word you say. If you retire in the middle of your old patrol zone, as I did, you’re sure to be reminded.

I always treated people like I would want to be treated and that has worked out well for me.

JUST A THOUGHT …

Dear Editor: Today was just an ordinary day that I went into the grocery store. Usually, I’m in such a rush that I go through the motions without even a thought. But today was different. As I stood at the check out line, I began to read the magazines on the rack but did so from a different viewpoint.

Usually, I am curious about what is going on in the world.

I usually want to keep up with the news, but this time, I stood back and waited for the gentleman ahead of me check out and just looked at the covers of the magazines with a different lens.

What happened next just over-

whelmingly made me sad.

What has happened to this world? I asked myself. This world seems to be upside down, inside out, backward. Have we become a society that pays a lot of money for “any” news? Even if it is bad news about other people.

Ratings go up when bad things happen to others. I am hearing more and more people feeling the same way I am feeling now. Feeling of sadness, disgust and anger in the direction we are heading as a society.

I remember buying magazines that showed us how to improve our health, our lives, our relationships. What happened to “Dear Abby” my mom read to me when I was little?

I want to turn away from what I’m seeing and I want to be able to encourage someone today. I know there is much good in everyone and that we need more aware of what our atmosphere and environment has become in the media. With awareness of what is good in others, we can feel compassion and humility in the times where others have exceeded our expectations or have gone out of their way to help us or others.

Becoming aware of our potential and the power within us to contribute positive and encouragement to others is one of the greatest gifts we have as human beings.

I, for one, challenge you to seek out opportunities to encourage one another whenever possible. Perhaps maybe, just maybe, we can turn this world back right-side up!

NEWS BRIEFS Suspect arrested in Frank’s Place shooting The man accused of carrying out the shooting Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Frank’s Place bar in Ocoee has been arrested, according to Ocoee Police Deputy Chief Steve McCosker.

Lathan Jeen Yee, Lathan Jeen Yee 39, turned himself in to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, Oct. 15, according to Yee’s arrest report.

Ocoee Police issued an arrest warrant for attempted second-degree murder for Yee Friday, Oct. 12, according to a press release.

Officers responded to Frank’s, 146 N. Clarke Road, in reference to a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located a 39-year old male victim with a gunshot wound on his foot.

The victim was transported to Health Central Hospital, where he spoke with officers, the report states.

“The victim advised he was approached by an unknown suspect and offered a shot of alcohol,” the report states.

“The victim refused the shot, and an argument ensued. The victim and suspect agreed to take the argument outside of the bar. Once outside the bar,

the suspect pulled a firearm and began to shoot at the victim.”

Housekeeper wanted for jewelry heist Windermere Police Department detectives need the public’s help in locating $30,000 worth of stolen pieces of jewelry, as well as the suspect they believe took them from a Windermere home.

According to police reports, the jewelry includes one diamond tennis bracelet; one cuff bracelet; two oval hoop earrings; a vintage pendant; an X ring; and pear earrings, valued at more than $30,000 total.

Detectives believe a care. com housekeeper, Shannon Hutchens, 34, stole the jewelry between Aug. 28 and Oct. 1. Hutchens currently is wanted for theft charges in Orange County.

Hutchens recently was evicted from her last known address in Apopka. She was last seen driving a white 2002 Chevrolet two-door sedan with Florida license plate 2899QU. Volunteers for Ryan’s Case for Smiles created pillowcases that will be donated to local hospitals.

Bev Read loves sewing so much that her fabric collection fills up her garage and her attic. So, when the self-proclaimed “fabriholic” discovered Ryan’s Case for Smiles, it was the perfect match.

“It was a match made in heaven, because I can use up all my fabric,” Read said, laughing. “I’m what they call a fabriholic. If I see fabric, I buy it.”

Ryan’s Case for Smiles is a volunteer organization dedicated to helping make children feel better.

Case for Smiles volunteers create colorful and cheerful pillowcases that are distributed to hospitalized children battling cancer or other life-changing illnesses. In addition to donating pillowcases, volunteers occasionally visit hospitals to sew with the children, said Jenny Ames, coordinator for the Orlando chapter of Ryan’s Case for Smiles.

“The most rewarding (aspect) is when we get to go to the hospital and sew with the kids (who) are there that have cancer,” Ames said. “That is the most rewarding part of it — to see their faces when they make their first pillowcase. … Everybody just loves it. It’s a lot of camaraderie and fun.”

Read has been involved with the Orlando Chapter of Ryan’s Case for Smile since June. She’s involved in a sewing group that meets Saturday mornings at the Lake Trail Residents Club at Independence in Horizon West, 14600 Avenue of the Groves. In June, the group sewed 138 pillowcases for Case for Smiles. Since then, members of the group have been sewing pillowcases for the organization during their free time.

They got together again Oct. 13 to sew more pillowcases for Ryan’s Case for Smiles. Moving forward, however, the group will be needing some help, Read said.

“We are looking for donations of fabric,” Read said. “The biggest (thing we need) is just getting people out to volunteer. … If we could get more volunteers, that would be great.”

Donated pillowcases, fabrics and threads must be made from 100%, child-friendly cotton and pre-washed with unscented laundry detergent with no added fabric softeners. It’s recom-

mended that donated fabrics be fun, silly, colorful and cheerful.

For volunteers, sewing experience isn’t required.

“Pillowcases are easy to make,” Read said. “You can make them as silly as you want. That’s the best thing. They’re so much fun to make. … If they don’t sew, they can cut out pillowcases, they can iron (or) they can press them after we’re done and put them in a plastic bag.”

Formerly known as ConKerr Cancer, Ryan’s Case for Smiles was founded in 2007 in Pennsylvania by Cindy Kerr. Her son Ryan, for whom the organization is named, was battling cancer at the time and was in and out of the hospital for treatment, Ames said.

“Every time he (Ryan) went into the hospital, the place was really dull looking,” Ames said.

“So (Kerr) made him a pillowcase and took it to him. When he got the pillowcase, the other cancer patients (liked them) … so he asked his mom to start making them.”

Those interested in getting involved can sign up to volunteer online. Monetary donations can also be made online, and fabric or pillowcase donations can be taken to Read or any Case For Smiles Orlando drop-off site. A drop-off site is located at Nancy’s Quilt Shop, 121 W. Plant St., Winter Garden.

In addition to sharing a love of sewing, Read and Ames each have a personal connection to Ryan’s Case for Smiles. Both of their mothers died of cancer.

Community Development Director Steve Pash said the application for the project originally was submitted in 2015. Since then, the project has gone through multiple reviews.

“Each time the plans have been submitted, the Development Review Committee has provided comments on the design not meeting all code requirements (and) made a recommendation that they revise (plans) and submit for another review,” Pash said, adding the DRC made another recommendation Aug. 1 to deny the plans for not meeting code.

“Specifically, we had required that they provide turning movements to show and verify that the dumpster access would work properly.”

Pash also mentioned an issue regarding semi-truck access to and maneuverability on the site as a concern, among others.

“When a semi enters, exits and maneuvers (at) the site, it does not properly work, because the semi needs to use both lanes,” Pash said. “The semis, when they enter the site off of 11th (Street), they use the entrance as well as the exit to get full access to the site. … And when they exit onto Plant Street, it blocks the entrance as well as exit and uses both lanes of Plant Street to exit out.”

He added this issue does not meet a section of the city code that addresses movement, space and loading and unloading operations at retail, wholesale and industrial establishments with a gross-floor area of fewer than 10,000 feet. He also cited issues with proposed

streetscaping and lighting in the plans.

In addition to not meeting certain provisions of the city code, the subject property is located within the East Winter Garden Character Area design overlay district. The plans for the Dollar General are not consistent with the design overlay, Pash said.

Urban Designer and Planner Kelly Carson said the design overlay is a tool “to transform the East Plant Street corridor from Dillard Street east into Ocoee” by taking “some of the design elements that make historic Downtown (Winter Garden) so successful.”

“The latest version (of the site plan) ... falls short not only of the specific measurable requirements of the overlay, but (also) the plans are entirely inconsistent with the major goal of the character area,” Carson said. “(The goal is) to move away from (a) generic, automobile-dominant design to one the evokes more of the historic Downtown (Winter Garden) flavor and significantly improve the pedestrian experience.”

Regarding specific overlay requirements the plans didn’t meet, Carson cited issues regarding building height and frontage.

“The minimum building height is required to be at least 25 feet tall,” Carson said. “They are proposing a building that at the maximum is 25 feet tall, but the majority of the building is shorter than that at about 21 feet or shorter. They are required to have a minimum 80% frontage along Plant Street. They do not meet this requirement.”

Carson also said Dollar General would be one of the first buildings

in the area subject to the overlay requirements.

“Staff realized early on that achieving the goals of the character area could pose a challenge for the applicant, because it would be one of the first,” Carson said, adding that staff even provided the applicant with a design that meets overlay requirements. “To this end, the applicant has been provided with numerous possible alternatives for developing the property in a way that meets the design goals and requirements for the area. They have chosen not to follow any of them.”

Commissioners heard from project representatives, who requested commissioners move the site plan forward subject to the project meeting conditions outlined in the staff report.

Scott Baker, of law firm Zimmerman, Kiser and Sutcliffe, spoke on behalf of the project.

“We think there’s room for us to meet those conditions with a future submittal,” Baker said.

“We’ll change the site plan to meet these conditions prior to getting a permit.”

Kathy Hattaway, of Poulos & Bennett, also spoke on behalf of the Dollar General site plans. She said the plan can be modified to address the compliance issues.

“Modifications can be based on the man-made environment or public rights-of-way or lot configuration, and that’s exactly what we have in the case of this application,” Hattaway said.

Representatives of the Dollar General site plan refused to comment after the meeting.

over a course of about three to four weeks, they said.

“We had a variety of fifth-graders who we chose based on their hard work during the school year and their ability level — somewhat — to be able to accomplish painting a mural like this,” Christopher said.

The mural was painted to help beautify the campus, and the theme of it is unity, Montgomery said.

“We had a lot of empty space where we could put something that represented the school, something that people would

see and go, ‘Wow,’ (and) stop and reflect,” Montgomery said.

“Our art teachers — Ms. (Dana) Christopher and Ms. (Vivian) Alfonso — got together and thought about different designs, and we wanted it to be schoolbased with school kids kind of representative of the school,” Montgomery said.

Alfoso said students have enjoyed the school’s artistic addition. “(Students) have had a positive reaction,” Alfonso said. “(The mural) means what our school represents. It represents all our

subject areas and that school is a place of excitement and learning, of art, music and physical education.”

Before the mural was painted, the wall had nothing on it at all, Montgomery said.

“It was just a blank wall — just empty space,” he said. “It was just sterile. You walk out, and it (was) just like a hospital corridor.

You travel (down the hall), and it’s just stairs on one side and this white wall. We just kept looking on it and we were like, ‘We need to put something there.’ Something bright. Something that’s kind of

cheerful … but also is reflective.

We didn’t want to just stick up a big decal or Willy the Wildcat poster or something.”

To further beautify the school, Montgomery said more murals could be coming in the future.

“We’ve talked about putting some more in some different spots, but we had to start (somewhere) to see how that works,” Montgomery said. “It’s been positive, and there’s definitely areas (on campus) we can enhance.”

Whispering Oak Wildcats and their parents might have noticed new work of art upon entering the school from the car-rider area.

The school’s art teachers, Dana Christopher and Vivian Alfonso — with the help from some students — have painted a mural in the hallway of one of the main entrances to the school.

“We wanted to have something visual for the students to see when they came into the building,” Christopher said. “I saw this (mural design) on the internet and thought it was cool, so we just kind of made it our own as far as what we wanted to include in it.”

The mural depicts numerous silhouettes walking toward the entrance to the school. Each silhouette depicts a different aspect of the school — such as science and technology, art, and physical education.

“What the mural kind of represents is all the different aspects that are here at the school,” Principal Kip Montgomery said. “If you look at the mural, it has students at play, it has rainy-day students … you have an administrator or teacher checking a laptop (representing) the technology and then Willy the Wildcat, our mascot, and they’re all walking into the school.”

Christopher and Alfonso didn’t paint the mural alone. They had help from some fifth-grade students. In total, the mural took 25 hours to complete and was painted

The Oakland Town Commission has approved the preliminary subdivision plan for the second phase of the Hull Island subdivision on the Hull Island/Rossman Pinto Property on the west side of the town.

Phase 2 is about 18 acres in size; five acres will be preserved as a conservation area, and 45 singlefamily homes will be built on the remaining 13 acres.

The developer said this second phase will have a bigger tree canopy; in fact, five lots were eliminated in the plans to save multiple large trees.

Commission concerns in March led the applicant, South Park Developers II, to make traffic improvements along Simeon Road and Hull Island Drive, including sidewalks, an emergency-access gate and a stop sign.

The entire two-phase project will consist of a maximum of 112 homes on 47 acres.

Twelve local Duke Energy Florida line technicians practiced their skills in preparation for a competition to crown the best linemen in the world.

And although the restoration efforts associated with Hurricane Michael prevented the Florida competitors from traveling to Bonner Springs, Kansas, for the International Lineman’s Rodeo at the National Agricultural Hall of Fame rodeo grounds, the team from Winter Garden put on quite the show during their training at the Winter Garden Training Center on East Crown Point Road.

This would have been the sixth competition for Winter Garden resident Josh Wilson and his teammates, Sean Cook and Clay Baxter.

The local trio, performing as a journeyman team, won the Florida rodeo in April. Other Central Florida teams competed, as well.

The TV — complete with a state-of-the-art Chromacolor picture tube — was outfitted in a walnut-colored cabinet and came with a free stand.

Warrior nation took over Plant Street Thursday, Oct. 11, for its Homecoming parade. The next night, the orange-and-blue faithful packed Raymond Screws Stadium as the Warriors took on the Apopka Blue Darters for the game. Before kickoff, the school crowned Sally Golden as its 2018 queen and Zachary Stewart as its king. Finally, students danced the night away at the dance, held Saturday, Oct. 13, at the House of Blues Orlando.

Orlando Health is asking for the public’s help in identifying an unknown patient who has been unable to provide the information himself.

The patient appears to be an Asian or Hispanic man, likely in his mid- to late-20s.

He is 5-foot-6 and weighs 144 pounds. He has a short spiked haircut and a goatee.

He has no physical identifying marks or tattoos.

The unidentified man was struck by an automobile near the intersection of Kirkman Road and Colonial Drive the week after Christmas.

He was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center by ambulance and was admitted Dec. 27.

GLADYS MORGAN CARROLL DIED SUNDAY, SEPT. 30, 2018.

Gladys Morgan Carroll, 74, of Clermont, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018.

She was born Jan. 30, 1944, in Morgan County, Tennessee, to Roy and Argolia Morgan. Gladys was the only daughter — and right in the middle of eight brothers.

Mrs. Carroll, with her husband, owned Carroll’s Welding on Maguire Road until his passing in 1999. She was also a retired school bus operator for Orange County Public Schools and a cosmetologist.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Herman; daughter, Sandra Wall; son,

Carl Copeland Jr.; granddaughter, Robin Gunnell-Mifflin; her precious parents, Roy and Argolia Morgan; and six of her beloved brothers, Clayton, Parley, Perry, Oran, Eddie and Dale Morgan.

Survivors include her daughters, Karen Chauppetta, Peggy Gunnell (Robin), Teresa Waller

and Sonya Carroll-Dumas (John); son-in-law, Scott Wall Sr.; brothers, Walter Morgan (Joyce) and Randall Morgan (Kay); seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Winter Garden, with Brother Tom Barnhill officiating, with interment at Highland Memory Gardens in Apopka.

The family would like to thank everyone who attended our mom’s viewing and funeral or sent flowers and kind words of encouragement during this difficult time. It was greatly appreciated.

Bernard Paul “Bill” Harter, II, 88, of Winter Garden, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2018. He was born in Gainesville, Florida, on Oct. 11, 1929.

A longtime Orlando and Winter Garden resident, Bill was president of Harter-Adams P.A. Architects for 42 years. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, in the territory of Alaska. He was an honorary member of the Orlando Kiwanis Club and a member of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, in Orlando. Bill was a member of Masonic Lodge Eola 207 A&FM, the Scottish Rite and Bahai Temple Shrine.

He loved all things outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, sailing and their home in North

Carolina. A very active member in the community, Bill was also the Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 227 for 10 years.

The joy of his life was being a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. B.P. Harter and Kathleen Williams Harter, and by his sister, Margret “Peg” Pattillo.

The West Orange volleyball team finished the regular season with an 18-6 record after sweeping rival Windermere Oct. 11: 25-15, 25-17, 25-22.

It was the regular-season finale for each squad. Both began play in their respective district tournaments this week.

FHSAA State Series play has begun for more than just volleyball this week. District golf tournaments took place Oct. 15 to 17, and district cross-country meets will take place Oct. 22 to 27 — as will district meets for swimming and diving.

Bowling meets are the latest, scheduled to take place Oct. 29 and 30.

The Foundation Academy football team did not win last Friday, but it was an exciting night nonetheless. Bailey Trinder, who was severely injured in an accident earlier this season, was present on the sideline for the first time since his accident.

Three pairs of local siblings are playing D1 college football together this fall — including two sets of siblings who graduated from Foundation Academy.

ester and Lance Axson have been playing football together since they were in Pop Warner.

That continued through their days at Foundation Academy, where the two defensive backs wreaked havoc upon opposing offenses for head coach Brad Lord’s program.

During their varsity careers, both Axson brothers emerged as Division I prospects.

Still, the chance they would play together

— as Division I college football players — seemed slim at best.

And yet, on Saturdays this fall, that is exactly what the Axson brothers are doing.

Lester, a redshirt freshman, and Lance, a true freshman, are suiting up for the Campbell University Camels — a Division I FCS program competing in the Big South Conference.

The Camels are 5-1 so far this fall, and both brothers have appeared in each of the team’s six games, with 13 tackles between SEE SIBLINGS PAGE 26

The Ocoee High baseball program will have a new leader at its helm when it takes the field this coming spring.

Chad Hall, an assistant for the team for the last three years, was promoted to head coach at the beginning of the fall following former coach Bobby Brewer’s decision to step down.

Hall, who also has been on campus as a teacher for the last three years, has assumed all responsibilities of leading the program during the fall season. It is his first go-round as a head coach after previous stops as an assistant at Apopka, Lake Brantley and, most recently, Ocoee.

“It’s an exciting opportunity to coach these guys — we’ve got a lot of young talent,” Hall said. “The coaching part I’ve got down — it’s just the scheduling part and the paperwork.”

Hall is from Central Florida and played collegiately as a second baseman at Georgia Southern, where he also briefly worked as an assistant coach afterward. He said he has picked up important coaching lessons during his career from the coaches with whom he has worked — Mike Smith (at Lake Brantley), Eric Lassiter (at Apopka) and Brewer and Sonny Wise (at Ocoee) — and he is excited to implement those things while also molding the culture for the Knights in his own way.

“We’ve got to get the work ethic a little better; I’m holding them accountable for their actions,” Hall said. “The only way I know how to run a practice is the college level — so we (will) have planned practices, and that’s what we’re going to do.”

Ocoee has had a winning record in three of the last four seasons and made the playoffs for the first time in 2017. The Knights, who went 14-12 in 2018, will look to build around a core that includes players such as Ethan Long, Orlando Perez and others — including some talented newcomers who have impressed during the fall season.

Hall said his first go-round with making a schedule led to a schedule that will be challenging for the team and his staff. The staff includes returners Chris Hall and Ashton Watts, as well as new additions Clay Schall, son of Olympia head coach Chuck Schall, and Jason Evans.

“We have a tough schedule — we face almost everybody in the Metro,” Hall said. “I just want to see how it goes.”

Nick Wright Nick Wright is in his first year at Ocoee High, where he is the starting quarterback for the varsity football team, and already has been a part of history. Wright tossed four touchdowns and ran for four more against West Port for the Knights (4-4) in a 77-67 victory Oct. 5 that set a program record for points scored for Ocoee. Combining his passing and rushing yards that night, Wright accounted for 524 of the Knights’ 624 total yards.

Have you ever been involved in a game like the Knights’ victory over West Port?

I’ve been playing football since I was 5 years old, and no — no game (I’ve played in) has ever been that high-scoring.

You passed for four touchdowns and ran for four more.

Have you ever put up numbers like that?

The closest I’ve ever come to that is against Olympia (earlier this season). I had four rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns. … We just stayed cool and calm and kept scoring points. We move fast and try to be the fastest high-school football offense in Orange County — that’s what we pride ourselves on.

What’s it been like coming to a new school and becoming the team’s starting quarterback?

It’s been challenging — new school, new culture and new people. But I just remain humble and stick with my friends on the football team.

How do you feel the team has done this year?

We’re definitely better this year.

We’ve lost three games (out of four losses) by a combined nine points,

so we really wish we could have cleaned up a little bit in those three games. You could pick any play that could have won those games. But lately, we’re just focused on winning the next game and trying to get into this playoff race.

This program has a new staff under head coach Aaron Sheppard. What’s been the team’s identity this fall?

We want to be as disciplined as possible — Coach Shep (Sheppard) installs discipline in us every day with everything we do around school. We listen to Coach Shep — Coach Shep is a great coach. … We listen, and we trust (the staff).

What do you think you will study in college?

I think I’d like to be a nutritionist for a college (athletics) team.

Have you traveled much and, if so, do you have a favorite destination?

(My family and I) really like to cruise, so we go on cruises twice a year. I think my favorite destination was Belize — we went cavetubing. We had some — I think it was iguana — but it was good.

It tasted like chicken. It was fun to have no phones — just having family time and chill.

them. They have been on the field at the same time, recalling those memories of youth football.

“I think about it every day — it’s crazy,” Lester Axson said. “We’ve been playing side-by-side since Pop Warner. Just to keep it going at the college level, it surprises me — and I’m thankful.”

What’s even more surprising than the Axson brothers finding their way to Campbell’s North Carolina campus together is that they’re not the only local brothers to have done so at the Division I level. In fact, James and Josh Green — graduates of Olympia High — are playing together at Tennessee State University, and Denzel and Darius Irvin — graduates of Foundation Academy — are together at UNC-Charlotte.

Oh, and one more wrinkle — for good measure — is that all six student-athletes play defense.

For each pair of brothers, the older was recruited to their current programs first. In all cases, when the same school began to show interest in the younger sibling, it quickly became a dream situation.

“It kind of did move to (Tennessee State) top of the list (in recruiting), because I already had a good relationship with the staff,” Josh Green, a true freshman defensive back, said.

For James Green, a sophomore linebacker for the Tigers, having his younger brother join him has created an added air of accountability for the former Titans —

extending both ways.

“A lot of people don’t understand, but having your sibling is great, because he’s able to keep me doing the things I need to do,” James Green said.

It is a sentiment Josh Green shares.

“Everybody goes through adversity when they get to college,” said Josh Green, who arrived at the Tennessee campus in June.

The Green brothers have thrived, with James Green recording 14 tackles so far this season, and Josh Green working his way up the depth chart. In Charlotte, Denzel Irvin, a redshirt senior defensive back, has 24 total tackles, and Darius Irvin, a redshirt junior linebacker, has four.

Siblings can hold each other accountable — and also recreate a home-like feeling hundreds of miles from greater Orlando.

“It makes it feel like home,” Lance Axson said. “I’m not up here by myself.”

For the younger siblings, in particular, having someone who has gone through all the adversity of the first few months of college — when the student-athletes are adjusting to the independence of a college schedule, as well as the increased speed and physicality of the college game — can be a benefit. “(Lester), I got up here, said that I need to be on top of my time management and my schoolwork,” Lance Axson said.

For siblings who otherwise would keep up with their brothers’ careers via social media and other digital avenues, being in the same program makes it much easier.

“He (Josh) is doing great — he’s doing what I expected him to do,” James Green said.

It’s also a plus for the parents of each pair of brothers. Instead of having to decide which game to watch — either in person or on television — each weekend, the decision is made for them.

“They only have to worry about which jersey they wear,” Lance Axson said.

LAFAYETTE (5-3) AT CFCA (3-4) A last-minute addition to the schedule will have the Lafayette Hornets traveling southeast to face the Eagles, who had to replace The Nation Christian Academy, which has forfeited most of its games this fall. Junior quarterback Jaxson Beach is a do-it-all player on offense for Lafayette, having tossed 18 touchdowns and ran for 10 more.

CORNERSTONE CHARTER (3-5) AT LEGACY CHARTER (5-2) Angel De La Rosa keys the offense for Cornerstone, having rushed for a team-best 109.5 yards per game and nine rushing touchdowns. The Ducks are scoring just 11.4 points per game and allowing more than double that at 24.3 points per game. Junior Justin LaGasse has scored a team-high eight touchdowns for Legacy, and the defense is keyed by Gabriel Chambless’ 37 total tackles.

WEST ORANGE (5-3, 1-1) AT EVANS (1-5, 0-2) The Warriors absolutely have to win their remaining two games to have a shot at the playoffs, and the district showdown with the Trojans seems to be just what the doctor ordered. Evans started its campaign with a win in Week One — 32-18 over Freedom — but has dropped five consecutive games since then. During that stretch of losses, the Trojans are allowing a porous 41.2 points per game and are scoring just less than a touchdown per game at 5.6 points per game.

Unfortunately for West Orange (5-3, 1-1), that distance was just a bit too much, as a late defensive stand by rival Apopka (6-2, 2-0) capped off a 27-21 win for the Blue Darters — putting a damper on Homecoming night.

Despite the tough loss, the offensive combo of quarterback Elijah Stimmell and wide receiver Darrell Harding Jr. showed flashes of brilliance, with Stimmell getting the ball into Harding’s hands on 11 different occasions for 154 yards and three touchdowns. Stimmell finished the night 22-for49 for 261 yards and three touchdowns.

DISTRICT IMPLICATIONS

The loss for the West Orange Warriors against the Apopka Blue Darters effectively ended the Warriors’ hopes for a district title — and made the road to the playoffs that much tougher for West Orange (1-1 in the district).

Regarding the FHSAA Class 8A, District 4 standings, the loss sets up a winner-takesall matchup between Apopka and Wekiva Oct. 26. The Blue Darters, Mustangs and Warriors each are 1-1 in the district.

If Apopka (2-0 in the district) wins the Oct. 26 game, it wins the district outright, regardless of whether the Warriors beat Evans (0-2 in the district) Friday.

If Wekiva (1-1 in the district) wins the game, and West Orange wins against Evans, the Mustangs, Warriors and Blue Darters each would be 2-1. That would necessitate a tiebreaker.

That almost certainly would give the nod to Wekiva, which

Apopka was sixth in the region with an average of 39.71, and West Orange was seventh with an average of 39.29 — although the Blue Darters’ average will go up and the Warriors’ will go down when updated rankings are released midweek.

With the Warriors having no chance to win the district, their only chance to advance to the postseason is via the power rankings, meaning West Orange will have to win both its remaining game — against Evans and Ocoee — and hope for all the teams it has played earlier in the season to continue winning, thereby driving up its average.

OCOEE HOLDS ON FOR HOMECOMING WIN

Despite a comeback attempt from the Lake Howell Silver Hawks, the Ocoee Knights were able to get one last stop on defense and secure a 28-19 win on Homecoming night.

After falling behind 7-0 following a touchdown by the Silver Hawks (2-5, 1-3) on their opening drive, the Knights went on to score 22 straight points to head into halftime up 22-7.

Lake Howell wouldn’t go quietly. The Silver Hawks went on to cut the Knights’ lead to 28-19 with 7:14 left in the game.

On the following kickoff, Lake Howell recovered the kick at Ocoee’s 26-yard line. This time, though, the Knights defense got the stop on fourth down with 4:19 left in the game, securing the win.

“We fought hard,” Ocoee head coach Aaron Sheppard said. “(The defense) did a good job.”

Wright turned in another stellar performance: He threw

one touchdown to Jeremiah Fails and ran for two more.

“He turned it on,” Sheppard said of Wright’s play. “He’s getting better and better.”

Dexter Rentz scored the Knights’ other touchdown on a 35-yard run.

The win brings Ocoee to .500.

Of the Knights’ four losses, three have come by a combined nine points.

Despite long odds of making the playoffs, Sheppard said afterward he is seeing positive changes in the team’s culture.

“They’re buying in,” Sheppard said. “We’re just short in a few places.”
