Tickets are $30 in advance and, if available, $35 at the gate.

The annual nonprofit festival benefits three groups: the Windermere Police Foundation, Florida Brewers Guild and the town of Windermere’s business district.

This year, 28 brewers, all from Florida, will set up stations.

Most are from the Central Florida market, Sapp said, but a few are coming from Sarasota, south Florida and Jacksonville.

Each will bring two to four different craft beers, so guests will have more than 100 to taste.

“It’s different than any of the other beer fests; a lot of the other beer fests end up being in warehouses or fields or parking lots,” Sapp said. “You get a great Windermere feel. It’s right on the street, with the tree canopy.

It just has a different feel than others. … I think we attract more beer lovers … who really taste the beer and ask questions.”

And because there are no distributors involved, attendees can talk to someone who has a direct connection to the brewery.

Whether you love carving pumpkins, trick-or-treating or celebrating the season with fall-themed family photos, there are plenty of options in the Windermere area. in Florida, dreaming of cooler weather. Although the greater Central Florida area boasts an array of farm-based pumpkin patches and fall festivals, you

don’t have to look farther out from southwest Orange County. Whether you’re looking for the perfect backdrop for your fall family photos or in search of the perfect pumpkin to carve for your front doorstep, you’re sure to find plenty of options in your own backyard.

ST. LUKE’S UMC PUMPKIN PATCH

St. Luke’s United Methodist Church is known for hosting family-friendly holiday and seasonal celebrations — from the annual Easter egg hunt to its upcoming fall festival — but it also offers a pumpkin patch for a good cause.

Located at 4851 S. Apopka Vineland Road, the pumpkin patch opened Oct. 11 and will run daily through Oct. 26.

The patch features a variety of pumpkins, from the classic carving or miniature pumpkins to a range of winter squashes and gourds.

The pumpkin patch will be open from 4 to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. The only exception to these hours is on Sunday, Oct. 21, when the patch will close at 6 p.m.

Prices will range from $1 to $30 depending on choice and size of pumpkin, and all proceeds go to support St. Luke’s Youth Ministries.

In addition to the patch, St. Luke’s also is hosting a free “Trunks, Treats, and More” event from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20.

Children and families can enjoy trunkor-treating, food, entertainment, a costume contest for children, carnivalstyle and blow-up games, a mechanical bull and more.

Bring the whole family to choose this year’s pumpkins. Walk up and down the rows of pumpkins for sale, take family photos and come back on Halloween night to enjoy Lifebridge’s annual fall festival.

Lifebridge’s pumpkin patch is open daily through Halloween night, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. The patch will be open through 9 p.m. on Oct. 31. The patch has plenty of photo spots and props, story time, coloring pages and more.

Additionally, the church’s fall festival takes place on Halloween night, starting at 6 p.m. The community is encouraged to come to the event, which offers food trucks, trunk-or-treating, rides, games, costume contest and more.

W

hen Nikhita Toleti first enrolled in classes at age 5 for traditional Indian dance at her mother’s urging, she admits she did not like it.

But as time went on, she grew to understand the deeper meanings behind the hand gestures and dance motions and learned to love the classical Indian dance form called Bharatanatyam.

Fast-forward 10 years, and Toleti, now 15, can consider herself a master of the 2,000-yearold Bharatanatyam dance style — one of 10 classical dances from the culture-rich Asian country.

“My mom always loved this art form,” Toleti said. “She always wanted me to do it, so she encouraged me to join. At first, I wasn’t a good dancer, but I just kept going,

and I really enjoy it now.”

Toleti, a sophomore at Lake Highland Preparatory School in Orlando who lives in Windermere’s Isleworth community, recently earned a certificate proving her expertise from the Natyatharu Performing Arts Schools in Orlando, where she trained under Daveena Langton.

The last step in earning her certificate and graduating from the dance style was a three-hour solo debut featuring nine different dances, which she performed to an audience of 400 people at the Windermere High School auditorium Saturday, Sept. 15.

“The certificate is more for yourself more than anything, so that you can know you finally made it this far in dance because you have to train for a long time,” Toleti said. “Most people, generally, take classes for eight years before they graduate.”

To learn the Bharatanatyam style, a dancer must first learn myriad hand gestures, body postures and facial expressions, as well as the meaning of each one.

They are then invited to learn certain dances — many of which tell a story associated with the Hindu religion or celebrate the deities of its pantheon, she said.

Toleti said she enjoys the classical dance form, because it allows her to connect with her religion and culture. The dance originated in the region of Tamil Nadu — the area of South India where her family originated.

“I like to dance, because it’s a strong tradition where I’m from, and it helps me connect with my culture and roots,” Toleti said.

“I’ve learned a lot about where I come from. The dances let me know more about my origin, because they actually are about our religion and so we dance

This time last year, town leaders approved design plans for a capital-improvement project regarding some of its parks. Fernwood and Central parks are two of the seven included in the improvement plan.

According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, its Land and Recreation Grants staff administers these funds to local governments through the FRDAP. This is a competitive grant that annually funds both the acquisition and development of land for public, outdoor recreation.

And according to DEP documents, Windermere’s Fernwood Park improvement project and its Central Park improvement project ranked 10 and 17, respectively, on its list of 40 priorities. The scope of these projects includes projects such as development of picnic areas, disc golf courses, nature trails, exercise trails and improve-

ment of the existing facilities.

“Because we are a small community, we do have to count on grants like these to support the recreational amenities at the various parks that we have,” said Town Manager Robert Smith. “We just finished up one (project) at the Windermere Recreation Center where we have new fishing gear, we have a kayak launch, a new picnic area and we did some more improvements there. … We’re actually going to be doing a walking trail/conservation walkway, so you’re going to be able to enjoy and take a look at the lakes. It’s a beautiful view, and now that we have the check … we can get started right away. It helps us out. With small communities like this, it’s large.”

NEW AND PROMOTED OFFICERS

Windermere Police Chief Dave Ogden took to the podium for a bit to talk to residents about three police officers, each of whom was either being promoted or sworn in to duty.

Officer Carlos Hernandez, who recently became the full-time school-resource officer at Windermere Elementary, was pro-

moted to the rank of Patrol Officer 1. Officer Sam Keith was sworn in as a full-time officer, and Officer Jerrell Ogletree was sworn in as a reserve officer.

Ogden told residents and town staff Hernandez completed the Officer 1 testing procedure and received his promotion last month.

Hernandez came to the department a few years ago after serving in Casselberry, and he also previously served in the U.S. Marine Corps.

“It’s a great time at the Windermere Police Department,” Ogden said. “We have three different levels of structure in the WPD, and we created that a few years back. The purpose is to create a mentoring program for individuals to be able to promote through the system and be able to take on responsibilities as supervisors and leaders and managers of this department.

“We’re very blessed in this way,” Ogden said. “If you look around Central Florida, one of the things you’ve probably seen in the news all the time is that every police agency around here is shortstaffed. ... We have not been shortstaffed, and we have been at full staff for two years.”

for the gods. In Hinduism, there are a lot of stories about the gods, and each song or dance is dedicated to a specific one or tells a story.”

One of her favorite dances is the Aigiri Nandini. Aigiri means “daughter of the mountain king,” and Nandini means “who gives joy to the world.”

Toleti said she likes the particular dance because it is unique in the way that it portrays the story of the goddess Durga fighting a battle, who is represented by a woman rather than a man — as is the case with most of the other dances, she said. Toleti said she appreciates how it indicates that women are able to fight their own battles.

IN OTHER NEWS n Council members approved Ordinance 2018-01, which adopts the amended town of Windermere comprehensive plan. The ordinance passed 3-0, with one abstention. The plan will be transmitted to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for final review. n Town leaders approved the resurfacing of three tennis courts at the Windermere Recreation Center by for $11,226 by Varsity Courts Inc. This cost includes three new nets and two windscreens.

The color of the courts will be changed from blue to green.

The town also will consider a pickle ball option for the courts. n Town leaders also approved moving forward to repair the guard rail on Chase Road after a vehicle incident on Sept. 6 caused more than 150 linear feet of major damage to it. The driver’s insurance company is expected to reimburse the town for these repairs, which are to be completed by All-Rite Fence Services Inc., for $30,690.

Horizon West residents to launch community theater Under Horizon West resident Ron Baumanis’ leadership, the community is coming together to build the Horizon West Theater Company from the ground up.

When Ron Baumanis moved to Horizon West from Michigan this summer, there was one thing missing to make him feel more at home — a community theater.

Baumanis, a neuropsychologist, always has loved the area and watched his housing complex built from the ground up. A theater aficionado since age 12, Baumanis has directed more than 50 musicals and has never gone long without being involved in a production.

“I moved down here, and within six or eight weeks, I realized this is the longest I’ve gone in 40 years without doing something theaterrelated,” he said. “I’ve directed, sat on boards in community and professional theaters and worked across the board, primarily up in Michigan. I moved down here and started looking around and thought, ‘Where’s our community theater in this immediate area?’”

Although Winter Garden has the professional Garden Theatre and Mimi’s Community Theater,

Baumanis wanted something the Horizon West community could call its own and wouldn’t have to go far to find. After doing some research, he decided to build a community theater from the ground up.

“The arts are so vital in a thriving community, and there’s so many new people who moved into this area, (many with) lots of talent and those who come from communities where they have large theaters,” he said. “Theater is all forms of art — performing and drawing and painting, even volunteering. We’ve been getting remarkable responses and people excited about this theater. Really, we’re not just building a community theater — we’re building community.”

Baumanis posted on a Horizon West Facebook page to gauge interest and was able to gather enough people to get a theater board up and running. Things have proceeded quickly, and within the last month, board members have identified a venue, filed paperwork and taken care of legalities.

Theater Company was born.

“There’s so many people that have been craving seeing and performing theater,” Baumanis said.

“There’s a reason the high-school shows are selling out — people from the community are going to see them. … We wanted to create something right here. Rehearsals are here, things are built and made here and performed in Horizon West. … We specifically wanted to incorporate youth in the theater, as well. Having a venue to have your kids go learn and get an education and present a well-known piece — we thought that’d be vital for a community theater.

“It’s quite amazing how quickly this is coming together,” he said.

“We’re at the point where we’re ready to sign contracts, and we need to get fundraising right now.

We’re looking at things to do for physical fundraising and community partnerships, groups that want to be a part of that could donate money, and resources or space.”

There (are) people interested in being creative and doing something together and building.

They’re building a community of art infrastructure. Everyone I’ve talked to about this has been instantly excited about it.

“It’s one thing to dream and talk about it,” Baumanis said. “It’s another to actually say, ‘Let’s make this happen,’ and from the first day that’s been the philosophy.”

Windermere Police Department detectives need the public’s help in locating $30,000 worth of stolen pieces of jewelry, as well as the suspect they believe took them from a Windermere home.

According to police reports, the jewelry includes one diamond tennis bracelet, one cuff bracelet, two oval hoop earrings, a vintage pendant, an X ring and pear earrings, valued at more than $30,000 total.

Detectives believe a care.com housekeeper, Shannon Hutchens, 34, stole the jewelry between Aug. 28 and Oct. 1. Hutchens currently is wanted for theft charges in Orange County.

Hutchens recently was evicted from her last known address in Apopka. She was last seen driving a white 2002 Chevrolet twodoor sedan with Florida license plate 2899QU. Developer proposes 400 apartments in Dr. Phillips Residents in the area cite traffic and school overcrowding as concerns.

A developer seeks to add 400 apartments and 15,000 square feet of commercial space on 17 acres in Dr. Phillips.

The development, named Bering I, is proposed for 17.67 acres north of Lake Street, east of Ruby Lake Road, south of 10th Street and west of Oak Street in Southwest Orange County.

County leaders hosted a community meeting Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Sand Lake Elementary School regarding Bering I. The developer is requesting to amend the property’s future land-use designation from Activity Center Mixed Use to Planned Development-Commercial/MediumHigh Density Residential (PD-C/ MHDR). Currently, the property is approved for 420 timeshares and 30,000 square feet of commercial, said Jim Hall, of Hall Development Services.

“We are going from timeshare to apartments,” Hall said, adding that the developers also are reducing the amount of commercial space as part of the requested change from the property’s current entitlements. “There’s a slight lessening of density from a traffic standpoint.”

Area residents at the meeting, including Sand Lake Point resident Miles Katz, cited concerns over traffic, school impacts and

potential crime.

“I am concerned about the overpopulation that (could) be coming to this school (Sand Lake Elementary),” Katz said. “I’m concerned about traffic. I’m really concerned about potential crime, and overall, I don’t like a lot of medium- and high-density living coming to the area, because it’s really a single-family residential (area). It’s what we want, as a group. Most of the people I’ve talked to want single-family residences. … Something different should be proposed. Perhaps either stick with the timeshares or go less with less residences and more green space and less commercial. That would be more acceptable.”

Hall said that apartments would generate less traffic than timeshares.

“With timeshare, (people) are there for a week for vacation, and so (they) come and go all the time,” Hall said. “When you live somewhere, you go to work in the morning and you come home and maybe you go out another time and you come back.”

Regarding traffic, Orange County Transportation Planning Manager Renzo Nastasi said the Florida Department of Transportation is working on an interchange project at Daryl Carter Parkway that has a target date to begin construction in 2019. Once completed, it should help allevi-

ate some of the traffic issues in the area. He also said the county currently is working toward widening Lake Street to four lanes.

“On Lake Street, we’ve acquired about three-quarters of the property necessary to widen Lake Street,” Nastasi said. “We have one property still to acquire, but that’s dependent on a publicprivate partnership from a development on the south side (of Lake Street). We need probably another 30 to 35 feet of right-of-way. …

We’ve been slowly acquiring the right-of-way necessary to widen the road.”

District 1 County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey added the county cannot deny develop-

ments because of potential traffic impacts.

“The state prohibits us from denying any project based on traffic impacts,” VanderLey said. “That said, we do have the recourse to have them (developers) contribute to the (traffic) impacts they’re going to make, but the state does not allow us to deny any particular development solely on traffic impacts.”

VanderLey also said road projects take years to complete — longer than residential and/or commercial developments.

“When we look at roads, there’s a process that we go through that includes public meetings,” she said. “It includes looking at

wildlife, it includes looking at wetlands … that process takes a while. You don’t always see the road (project) break ground and get done about the same time that a development breaks ground and get done.”

Regarding schools, Orange County Senior Planner Jennifer DuBois said potential school impact have yet to be determined.

“In all likelihood, they (the developer) are going to have to enter a capacity-enhancement agreement with Orange County Public Schools,” DuBois said.

“They still have to go through the process of completing that determination with OCPS.”

Volunteers for Ryan’s Case for Smiles created pillowcases that will be donated to local hospitals.

Bev Read loves sewing so much that her fabric collection fills up her garage and her attic. So, when the self-proclaimed “fabriholic” discovered Ryan’s Case for Smiles, it was the perfect match.

“It was a match made in heaven, because I can use up all my fabric,” Read said, laughing. “I’m what they call a fabriholic. If I see fabric, I buy it.”

Ryan’s Case for Smiles is a volunteer organization dedicated to helping make children feel better.

Case for Smiles volunteers create colorful and cheerful pillowcases that are distributed to hospitalized children battling cancer or other life-changing illnesses. In addition to donating pillowcases, volunteers occasionally visit hospitals to sew with the children, said Jenny Ames, coordinator for the Orlando chapter of Ryan’s Case for Smiles.

“The most rewarding (aspect) is when we get to go to the hospital and sew with the kids (who) are there that have cancer,” Ames said. “That is the most rewarding part of it — to see their faces when they make their first pillowcase. … Everybody just loves it. It’s a lot of camaraderie and fun.”

Read has been involved with the Orlando Chapter of Ryan’s Case for Smile since June. She’s involved in a sewing group that meets Saturday mornings at the Lake Trail Residents Club at Independence in Horizon West, 14600 Avenue of the Groves. In June, the group sewed 138 pillowcases for Case for Smiles. Since then, members of the group have been sewing pillowcases for the organization during their free time.

They got together again Oct. 13 to sew more pillowcases for Ryan’s Case for Smiles. Moving forward, however, the group will be needing some help, Read said.

“We are looking for donations of fabric,” Read said. “The biggest (thing we need) is just getting people out to volunteer. … If we could get more volunteers, that would be great.”

Donated pillowcases, fabrics and threads must be made from 100%, child-friendly cotton and pre-washed with unscented laundry detergent with no added fabric softeners. It’s recom-

For volunteers, sewing experience isn’t required.

“Pillowcases are easy to make,” Read said. “You can make them as silly as you want. That’s the best thing. They’re so much fun to make. … If they don’t sew, they can cut out pillowcases, they can iron (or) they can press them after we’re done and put them in a plastic bag.”

Formerly known as ConKerr Cancer, Ryan’s Case for Smiles was founded in 2007 in Pennsylvania by Cindy Kerr. Her son Ryan, for whom the organization is named, was battling cancer at the time and was in and out of the hospital for treatment, Ames said.

“Every time he (Ryan) went into the hospital, the place was really dull looking,” Ames said.

“So (Kerr) made him a pillowcase and took it to him. When he got the pillowcase, the other cancer patients (liked them) … so he asked his mom to start making them.”

Those interested in getting involved can sign up to volunteer online. Monetary donations can also be made online, and fabric or pillowcase donations can be taken to Read or any Case For Smiles Orlando drop-off site. A drop-off site is located at Nancy’s Quilt Shop, 121 W. Plant St., Winter Garden.

In addition to sharing a love of sewing, Read and Ames each have a personal connection to Ryan’s Case for Smiles. Both of their mothers died of cancer.

The right treatment can get you back to feeling like yourself.

It was also the place to make a purchase if one was in the market for a new television. A 1971 advertisement promoted a Zenith TV that offered “sheer brilliance!” in a super-screen, compact-size, 19-inch Chromacolor set.

The TV — complete with a state-of-the-art Chromacolor picture tube — was outfitted in a walnut-colored cabinet and came with a free stand.

The mission of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is to preserve the heritage and architecture of Winter Garden while creating new cultural experiences. The Foundation also preserves the material culture of West Orange County, using it to educate the area’s youth on the community’s rich history.

Gladys Morgan Carroll, 74, of Clermont, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 30, 2018.

She was born Jan. 30, 1944, in Morgan County, Tennessee, to Roy and Argolia Morgan. Gladys was the only daughter — and right in the middle of eight brothers.

Mrs. Carroll, with her husband, owned Carroll’s Welding on Maguire Road until his passing in 1999. She was also a retired school bus operator for Orange County Public Schools and a cosmetologist.

She was predeceased by her loving husband, Herman; daughter, Sandra Wall; son,

Carl Copeland Jr.; granddaughter, Robin Gunnell-Mifflin; her precious parents, Roy and Argolia Morgan; and six of her beloved brothers, Clayton, Parley, Perry, Oran, Eddie and Dale Morgan.

Bernard Paul “Bill” Harter, II, 88, of Winter Garden, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2018. He was born in Gainesville, Florida, on Oct. 11, 1929.

Moss wasn’t alone in earning offers, either.

Fanbo Zeng, a freshman for the Windermere Prep boys basketball team, has received scholarship offers from Tulane and Florida Gulf Coast over the past week.

The Windermere Prep boys and girls golf teams both advanced to regional play as a unit after placing second and third at the FHSAA Class 1A, District 10 Tournaments Oct. 15 at West Orange Country Club. Kenny Nguyen turned in a 70 to lead the Lakers boys team, which tied with district champion The First Academy, but fell to the Royals in a one-hole playoff.

FHSAA State Series play has begun for more than just volleyball this week. District golf tournaments took place Oct. 15 to 17, and district cross-country meets will take place Oct. 22 to 27 — as will district meets for swimming and diving.

Bowling meets are the latest, scheduled to take place Oct. 29 and 30.

The Foundation Academy football team did not win last Friday, but it was an exciting night nonetheless as Bailey Trinder, who was severely injured in an accident earlier this season, was present on the sideline for the first time since that accident.

Earlier in the day, a 5K in his honor raised more than $10,000 to help his family with medical expenses.

rowing up as a Bay Hill resident, Joey Hodges has been able to see his share of professional golf at the neighborhood’s famous golf course.

The senior at Dr. Phillips High can recall, for

instance, observing the course’s signature Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2013 — the last time that Tiger Woods won the event.

Hodges said his favorite aspect about the course is its history, so when he won the Bay Hill Junior Club Championship for the fourth time in the past five years (spanning three different age groupings) Oct. 7, it mattered to him.

“It’s pretty cool to be a winner here (at Bay Hill),” Hodges said.

Hodges navigated the links at one of Central Florida’s signature courses — as well as some disagreeable weather — to win the one-day event once again.

“I played well, but I left some shots out there,” Hodges said.

Football-playing siblings reunite on Division I rosters Three pairs of local siblings are playing D1 college football together this fall — including former Olympia Titans James and Josh Green.

Lester and Lance Axson have been playing football together since they were in Pop Warner.

That continued through their days at Foundation Academy, where the two defensive backs wreaked havoc upon opposing offenses for head coach Brad Lord’s program.

During their varsity careers, both Axson brothers emerged as Division I prospects. Still, the chance they would play together

— as Division I college football players — seemed slim at best.

And yet, on Saturdays this fall, that is exactly what the Axson brothers are doing.

Lester, a redshirt freshman, and Lance, a true freshman, are suiting up for the Campbell University Camels — a Division I FCS program competing in the Big South Conference.

The Camels are 5-1 so far this fall, and both brothers have appeared in each of the team’s six games, with 13 tackles between them. They have been on the field

at the same time, recalling those memories of youth football.

“I think about it every day — it’s crazy,” Lester Axson said. “We’ve been playing side-by-side since Pop Warner. Just to keep it going at the college level, it surprises me — and I’m thankful.”

What’s even more surprising than the Axson brothers finding their way to Campbell’s North Carolina campus together is that they’re not the only local brothers to have done so at the Division I level. In fact, James and Josh Green — graduates of Olympia High — are playing together at Tennessee State University, and Denzel and Darius Irvin — graduates of Foundation Academy — SEE LOCAL PAGE 20

“There was bad weather, which caused a very long round of delays, so that probably threw me off my game a little. But I dealt with it.”

For Hodges, whose full name is Joey Hodges III, golf has been a part of his life for as long as he can remember — and it always has been a family affair.

“I think I’ve had a club in my hand since I was born, just because of my dad (Joey Hodges Jr.),” Hodges said. “I’ve been actually playing since I was 5 or so.”

A member at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club and Lodge since he was 6, Hodges has spent plenty of time watching golf at the highest level — often by the sport’s most famous competitor.

A linebacker for the Windermere Prep football team, Matthew Kane was part of a deciding moment during the Lakers’ big win against Foundation Academy Oct. 5. After teammate Kai Patterson knocked loose a fumble, Kane picked it up and ran it back for a touchdown — extending Windermere Prep’s lead to 21 points. On the season, Kane has 19 tackles — including eight tackles for a loss.

Tell us about the scoop-andscore touchdown against Foundation Academy.

Basically, I was in coverage, and I saw the ball completed, and I just pursued to the ball to make sure we get as many guys to the ball as possible. I see Kai (Patterson) make a really great play — he punches it out — and from there, instinct kicked in.

I grabbed the ball and started running the fastest I ran all year, probably. Got there (to the end zone) and wanted to celebrate with my teammates.

What drew you to football?

I’ve been playing forever — my parents are both big football fans. I love the physicality of the game, and I love the brotherhood it creates. I’m close with every single player, from the kicker to the safety. … (Football) creates a schedule and a grind that I love.

How excited are you and the members of the team’s defense to play each week?

Since last year, there’s been an energy on defense that I’ve never felt anywhere else playing football. The new schemes, the constant pressure — it’s just bringing tons of energy. I think that every time we get out on the field we know we’re going to dominate.

Which teammate is the funniest?

Definitely Jonah Best. That’s my boy.

He plays left guard, and he’s just a really funny guy and always makes me laugh — he keeps our spirits high.

Oh, and one more wrinkle — for good measure — is that all six student-athletes play defense.

For each pair of brothers, the older was recruited to their current programs first. In all cases, when the same school began to show interest in the younger sibling, it quickly became a dream situation.

“It kind of did move to (Tennessee State) top of the list (in recruiting), because I already had a good relationship with the staff,” Josh Green, a true freshman defensive back, said.

For James Green, a sophomore linebacker for the Tigers, having his younger brother join him has created an added air of accountability for the former Titans — extending both ways.

“A lot of people don’t understand, but having your sibling is great, because he’s able to keep me doing the things I need to do,” James Green said.

It is a sentiment Josh Green shares.

“Everybody goes through adversity when they get to college,” said Josh Green, who arrived at the Tennessee campus in June.

The Green brothers have thrived, with James Green recording 14 tackles so far this season, and Josh Green working his way up the depth chart.

In Charlotte, Denzel Irvin, a redshirt senior defensive back, has 24 total tackles, and Darius Irvin, a redshirt junior linebacker, has four.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned about economics?

I’m really interested in freemarket capitalism and how that applies, competition. We’ve learned about elasticity versus inelasticity, how goods transfer in the market, based on demand. We can apply that — we learn about that in the classroom and then when you are at the store, you can see how a price changes.

What do you like to do with your downtime?

I love going to sports games and watching my siblings. My sister, Julia Kane, she’s in eighth grade and plays varsity volleyball, so I’m always at her games.

Siblings can hold each other accountable — and also recreate a home-like feeling hundreds of miles from greater Orlando.

“It makes it feel like home,” Lance Axson said. “I’m not up here by myself.”

For the younger siblings, in particular, having someone who has gone through all the adversity of the first few months of college — when the student-athletes are adjusting to the independence of a college schedule, as well as the increased speed and physicality of the college game — can be a benefit. “(Lester), I got up here, said that I need to be on top of my time management and my schoolwork,” Lance Axson said.

“When it comes to football, he said to stay in the books, know my plays and watch a lot of film.”

For siblings who otherwise would keep up with their brothers’ careers via social media and other digital avenues, being in the same program makes it much easier.

“He (Josh) is doing great — he’s doing what I expected him to do,” James Green said.

It’s also a plus for the parents of each pair of brothers. Instead of having to decide which game to watch — either in person or on television — each weekend, the decision is made for them.

“They only have to worry about which jersey they wear,” Lance Axson said.

Hodges said he is enjoying the final stretch of his varsity career.

Although he would like to continue his career at the college level, he is mentally prepared to go to college in a purely academic role and to continue playing the game he loves on the side. Wherever he should enroll, he hopes to study sports business management.

Looking back, the Bay Hill Junior Club champion singles out his parents — Joey and Paula Hodges — for facilitating his junior and varsity career.

“They’ve been really supportive,” Hodges said. “I’m really appreciative for what they’ve done for me.”

What is the most interesting thing you’ve learned this year?

I’m going into the International Baccalaureate Diploma this year, and I’m taking IB Economics. It’s been an interesting class — we’ve been talking about philosophy of economics and all that stuff. It’s given me something I’m really interested in and also something I can apply to my life. I think it’s just given me a taste of what I want to do in college.

What are you hoping to study in college?

I’m probably either going to go into business or finance — that’s what my parents did. My goal right now is to try and get into a high academic

Of course, Hodges has done more than watch golf over the years. He has played Top 50 Junior Tour events and is in his second season as a captain of the boys golf team at Dr. Phillips High. There, he helps to lead a team that is having a strong fall — and a roster that is loaded with dynamic young players.

“They’re probably better than me,” Hodges said of the talented freshmen and sophomores on the team. “But some of them look up to me just because I’m older and I’m a leader.”

PHILLIPS (3-5, 2-0) AT OLYMPIA (2-5, 2-0) The Panthers win the district — yet again — with a win here, because the victory would give Dr. Phillips a tiebreaker advantage over the Titans and Oak Ridge Pioneers in the unlikely event it were to falter against Cypress Creek. Olympia, with a win, would set up an interesting scenario that would significantly raise the stakes of its Oct. 26 matchup at Oak Ridge (5-3, 2-1).

LIBERTY (5-2, 4-1) AT WINDERMERE (1-5, 1-3) The Wolverines continue their toughest stretch of the schedule, facing a team with a winning record for a third-consecutive game. Liberty comes into this matchup with an outside shot of making the playoffs, most likely as an at-large, but it will need to win out to do so.

Windermere, meanwhile, is looking to show some signs of life on offense after a pair of games where it combined for just 13 points.

BISHOP MCLAUGHLIN (3-3) AT WINDERMERE PREP (7-0) All that stands between the Lakers and an undefeated regular season in the SSAC is the Hurricanes, a team coming off consecutive losses — one of which came against CFCA, which Windermere Prep defeated 59-13 earlier in the season. Lakes senior running back Najji Allen has a team-best five rushing touchdowns to pair with two receiving touchdowns this fall.

WEST PARK PREP (0-5) AT THE FIRST ACADEMY (6-0) Not much to be said about this one as the Royals will be heavily favored for their Homecoming game. A second-year program, West Park is allowing 40 points per game and still looking for its first victory. That will be a tall task against the Royals and their run-heavy offense, which boasts three rushers with a minimum of 20 carries that are averaging better than five yards per carry.

LAFAYETTE (5-3) AT CFCA (3-4) A last-minute addition to the schedule will have the Lafayette Hornets traveling southeast to face the Eagles, who had to replace The Nation Christian Academy, which has forfeited most of its games this fall. Junior quarterback Jaxson Beach is a do-it-all player on offense for Lafayette, having tossed 18 touchdowns and ran for 10 more.

Lakers healthy, humming along ahead of SSAC Playoffs T

he end of the regular season is setting up well for Windermere Prep’s varsity football team.

The Lakers have secured the Sunshine State Athletic Conference’s Coastal LeagueCentral Division title. They are healthy. And as was the case Friday afternoon against Lake Mary Prep, they continue to win games in impressive fashion.

Host Windermere Prep improved to 7-0 overall with a 58-0 victory over Lake Mary Prep. The Lakers scored a touchdown on all eight offensive possessions — the defense also contributed to the scoring with a first-half safety — as they finished atop the four-team Central Division standings with a perfect 3-0 mark.

“This is the latest I’ve ever been in a season where we’re as healthy as we’ve ever been,” Windermere Prep head coach Jacob Doss said. “That’s very rare and — knock on wood — we want to continue that momentum. I need able bodies ready to go in the playoffs.”

Windermere Prep posted a 35-7 road victory over Class 2A state-ranked Foundation Academy the previous week, and the Lakers showed no signs of a letdown against fellow Sunshine State member Lake Mary Prep (1-6, 0-3). The overmatched Griffins found themselves behind 37-0 early in the second quarter and only a running clock put the brakes on the Windermere Prep offense.

Senior quarterback Kai Patterson was sacked for a 6-yard loss on the Lakers’ first snap, but that proved to be an aberration. WPS totaled 421 yards on 27 plays — good for a 15.6 yardsper-play average — including 312 rushing yards on 22 carries.

Najji Allen gained 128 yards on five attempts, highlighted by a 60-yard touchdown run. Joel Noel posted 107 rushing yards on four carries with TD runs of 21 and 76 (on the first offensive play of the second half) yards, while Rafael Betancourt had a 12-yard TD run with just under six minutes remaining.

Patterson went 5-of-5 passing in the first half for 109 yards and three touchdowns. All three scores happened in the opening quarter.

Patterson had an interception to end Lake Mary Prep’s opening drive that set up a 19-yard TD pass to Khadry Jackson. He later found an open Ross Fournet for a 28-yard score, which capped a 43-yard drive, while Jackson

The Windermere Prep defense stymied Lake Mary Prep’s spread offense. The Griffins did not cross midfield until less than four minutes remained in the third quarter when Marvin Holifield went past the 50-yard line on a short run.

Last Friday, it was the Freedom Patriots who bore the brunt of the Panthers’ wrath, as Dr. Phillips coasted to a 41-6 win.

Senior Japerri Powell rushed for 170 yards on 10 carries, scoring a career-best three touchdowns to lead the Panthers on their Senior Night. Powell starting quickly, scoring the game’s first touchdown on its first play — Powell took a direct-snap 57 yards to the house.

Freedom responded with a

score of its own to cut Dr. Phillips’ lead to 7-6, but that was as close as it would get. Powell broke free for another long touchdown run — this time 50 yards — and things only escalated from there.

Dr. Phillips led 28-6 at halftime and didn’t relent after the break. The Panthers have won 42 consecutive games in FHSAA Class 8A, District 5 — and 13 consecutive games against Freedom.
