hen Bri Bayne packed everything she owned and moved from Maryland to Windermere in February, she had a few a dreams in mind. The biggest of those — and the main reason for her move — was to put her skills as a makeup artist to the test by doing makeup for Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. Today, she’s living that dream.

“I moved down here just for makeup in general, and Halloween Horror Nights was one of my main drives,” Bayne said.

“When I applied ... I didn’t anticipate getting (the job). It’s a very hard gig to get to, but I ended up getting it within a couple of weeks of applying.”

indermere High theater students took audiences back to the 1950s Oct. 3 to 7 as they performed “The Pajama Game.” A cast of dozens of students sang and shimmied as they performed the classic Broadway musical, which tells a story of love and labor troubles in a pajama factory. The story follows a love that blossoms between Sid Sorokin, the new superintendent of the pajama factory, and Babe Williams, who is the head of the factory labor union’s grievance committee.

Kari and Tad Schmitz wanted to give back to their community, so they started brainstorming ideas. The Summerlake residents came up with the Bears Who Care organization, which raises money to provide books and teddy bears to ill and disadvantaged children.

They decided on books because both of Kari’s parents were educators, and they chose bears because Tad’s grandfather’s name was Teddy.

“We enjoy bringing comfort to the children with the teddy bears, and we’re also inspiring them to read, like my mom did,” Kari said. “We have huge hearts for children and wanted to find a way we could touch the lives of those in need while also honoring our family. We look forward to this journey and hope to bring happiness, comfort and education to young lives in our community.”

She recalled the day she spoke to a classroom and the children received their books and bears, hugging the stuffed animals tight.

“One little kid said, ‘I’m going to read my new story to my new friend,’” Kari said.

The Schmitzes have been doing this charity work for about a decade.

“Over time, we’ve given probably 11,000 teddy bears and books,” Kari said. “We started with 50 bears and 50 books. …

Last year, we did around 2,500.

So, the main purpose of the event is to fundraise for the charity to be able to provide the bears and books.”

They make regular visits to Orlando hospitals and some of the area’s lower-income schools, and always make time to read to the children.

The organization is launching Bailey, a new teddy bear, at the Oct. 20 5K race and festival. For every Bailey bear that is purchased for $20, three children will receive a

Traffic remains concern CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The first proposed development, Avalon Groves, encompasses 37.83 gross acres and is located on the east side of Avalon Road, south of Hartzog Road, north of Arrowhead Boulevard and west of Vista Del Lago Boulevard. The applicant is requesting to amend the property’s future land-use map designation from Growth Center-Planned DevelopmentC o m m e rc i a l / L ow - M e d i u m Density Residential and Growth Center-Planned DevelopmentLow-Medium Density Residential to Growth Center-Planned Development-Commercial.

The subject property contains two planned developments owned

by Island Reef PD and the Groves of West Orange PD. The applicant is proposing the development of up to 328 shortterm rental units and 20,000 square feet of retail/commercial space. The Island Reef PD currently is entitled for the development of up to 318 timeshare units, and the Grove of West Orange PD is approved for the development of 108 single-family detached and attached residential units.

Property-owner representative David Hulme said the request being made isn’t to change the amount of units but rather the intended use for the units.

“What the owner is trying to do is to bring this parcel of land back to some its original uses,” Hulme said. “We’re actually not adding any additional units.”

The other proposed development has been given the project name Avalon Park. The subject property encompasses 17.9 gross acres at 14544 Avalon Road, located on the west side of Avalon Road, north of Arrowhead Boulevard, east of the Orange/Lake County line and south of Grove Blossom Way. The applicant is requesting to amend the property’s future landuse designation from Growth Center-Commercial to Growth Center-Planned DevelopmentMedium-High Density Residential.

If the amendment is approved, it would allow for the development of up to 395 multi-family dwelling units.

The owner, Robert Reese, has been developing properties in Central Florida for about 27 years.

He said his intention is to build apartments on the property.

“This is a situation whereby what we’re proposing is (going to have) less traffic impacts than what is arguable already (entitled) here,” Reese said.

William Whatley, who lives along Arrowhead Boulevard, said he has concerns over traffic, safety and wildlife.

“We need to step up and mitigate some of these initial (traffic) safety issues,” Whatley said,. “There’s needs to designated turn-in lanes for Arrowhead … and at Hartzog.

“I’m not opposed at all to the development,” he said. “I’m just opposed to developments that are done without consideration of human safety (and) without consideration of the wildlife, the archeological resources and so forth.”

Regarding traffic concerns, VanderLey said a number of infrastructure projects are in the works that will address issues on Avalon.

Makeup artist fulfills dream

Bayne is a makeup artist who loves making scary faces and doing special-effects makeup.

Her dream of working as a makeup artist for Halloween Horror Nights was inspired by a trip to the annual event in 2014. Four years later, she reflects on her life coming full circle.

“I was through the roof,” Bayne said about learning she had gotten the Universal Orlando job.

Bayne learned the craft at the Academy of Makeup in a small town outside of Baltimore, where she studied some basic techniques for special-effects makeup. A lifelong artist, Bayne was drawn to makeup as her primary medium. Her love for monsters and Halloween drew her to special-effects makeup.

“I started doing my own special-effects (makeup) just because I like to make monsters — I like more of the Halloween-themed things,” Bayne said. “I was curious to see where I could go with my makeup, because I wasn’t sure if I liked the beauty side of it because I loved Halloween. … I try to push myself outside of my comfort zone (by) doing something different.”

After a sustaining a concussion from a bad car accident, Bayne was homebound and couldn’t work for six months.

“I had an accident that kept me home for six months, and to keep myself occupied, I just selftaught how to play with certain things (for special-effects makeup),” she said.

Flanders-Ramos is looking forward to the school’s next phase.

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’re always going to get the same result,” she said.

Central Florida Prep will add an app that gives parents payment options, as well as push notifications in real time. A Mariner Volunteer Parent program is starting. New classroom and athletic programs are being implemented.

Wester recently was hired, too, for his transformational leadership skills that will benefit the school and its future.

“CFP’s new school will … provide personalized educational programs and specific academies for students,” a release from the school stated.

Parents asking about security measures at the new campus were pleased with what they heard.

Security cameras will be placed throughout the campus, and all doors will incorporate key fobs, locks and codes. Law enforcement will be connected to the campus, which will have a fenced perimeter.

Flanders-Ramos said she doesn’t anticipate an increase in tuition, but there might be more fundraisers planned to pay off the debt.

Colleen Marrero, a fifth-grade teacher at Central Florida Prep, has taught at the school for six years and has two children who are graduates, one who is a senior this year and another who is in eighth grade.

She said she is excited for the greater opportunities the new school will provide.

“I’ve always said if I won the lottery that’s what I would do; I would buy the school a place of its own,” Marrero said. “It’s beautiful for (Flanders-Ramos) to have a place of her own.”

Central Florida Prep was the dream of Flanders-Ramos and her late husband, Bob, who founded the school in 2000 on three primary principles: knowledge, family and life. It provides education to children from age 1 through 12th grade.

“We aren’t planning to be anything other than who we are,” Flanders-Ramos said.

“This is a developing area,” Tate said, adding he chose to open the two restaurants in the area so he could live and work near his family.

Little Greek Fresh Grill soon will be opening at the Westside Shoppes at 6536 Old Brick Road, Suite 130, Windermere. A soft opening is planned for later this month, and a grand opening will take place in early November, restaurant owner Andrew Tate said.

“I’m really excited to open up and be able to to give back to the community and be a part of this community,” Tate said. “We do our best with (customer service). … It’s a friendly environment, and the food is, I think, some of the best Greek food around.”

Westside Shoppes’ newest restaurant will offer quality Greek cuisine made from the freshest ingredients at affordable prices.

Menu items are prepared from scratch daily. “(The restaurant follows) a concept where everything is cooked to order,” Tate said. “We make everything in-house.”

The restaurant chain was founded in Florida by Sigrid Bratic. The first location opened in Palm Harbor about 12 years ago, Tate said.

“Palm Harbor, which is right outside of Tarpon Springs, (has) a really big Greek community in the North Tampa area,” he said.

Party in Paradise A tropical-themed evening in Windermere is set to raise funds for the capital costs of building Cornerstone Hospice & Palliative Care’s newest hospice-care center in Ocoee.

t Cornerstone Hospice & Palliative Care, the philosophy is simple: Every moment matters, and it is important to help patients make the most of life’s precious moments.

After identifying a need for a hospice unit in West Orange, Cornerstone broke ground in November 2017 on its newest, 10-bed space inside the Orlando Health Center for Rehabilitation on the campus of Ocoee’s Health Central Hospital.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

As Cornerstone’s newest hospice unit is on track to open in just a few months, it is working on fundraising to build out the new space in time for the expected spring 2019 opening.

“About three years ago, we opened the Cornerstone hospice-care center inside Orlando Regional Medical Center, and that has been a tremendous benefit for the community, and many times, all the rooms are filled,” said Carol Felder, regional development director for Cornerstone Hospice.

“We love the model that it’s right on the hospital campus, because we feel it makes it more accessible to patients and families. … With our partnership with Orlando Health, they were building their new rehabilitation center at Health Central and invited us to put a unit there. So we’ll have a 10-bed Cornerstone care center inside the Orlando Health rehab center.”

Currently, Cornerstone also has four freestanding hospice houses in Clermont, The Villages, Tavares and Sumterville, Felder said.

“We’ve been in collaboration with Orlando Health for about the last five years, and we’re basically leasing the space from them, but we’re pretty much their hospice of choice,” she said. “A few years ago, they realized that in health, they cover everything from in the womb through most health care needs, but they felt they needed hospice care to close that continuum.”

Cornerstone began serving the Central Florida area in 1984 and has since grown to serve seven counties: Lake, Sumter, Orange, Osceola, Polk, Hardee and Highland. It currently serves just fewer than 1,400 patients daily, Felder said. It is a not-for-profit, community health care organization, and all proceeds and profits go back into the program.

“Sometimes a patient may want to take a last trip to Disney World or do something fun and we do that and help them live their last days, weeks or months to the fullest extent,” Felder said. “As a nonprofit, we have supplemental programs that help enhance that care, such as Pet Peace of Mind, where we help the families to consider the pets of the patients when they’re making plans so the pet isn’t left alone.”

BUILDING SUPPORT

Cornerstone has been hosting fundraising events in each of its communities for a few years now, Felder said. The signature event is called “Evening Beneath the Stars,” but each individual event often has a theme.

“About eight years ago, we wanted to do something a little bit different than our annual golf tournament, so we spoke to Missy Blackburn (a former board member) in Clermont and asked if we could hold an event at her home,” Felder said. “That was one event eight years ago, and now we hold these in each of our counties. The private home has benefits for two reasons. (Because) our service area is so widespread, it allows us to hold an event in each area and helps us cut down on expenses.

We can bring in donated alcohol and caterers and things we might not be able to do if we rented a large room somewhere.”

To raise funds for the Ocoee location, Cornerstone supporter Judy Noble will host “An Evening Beneath the Stars: A Night in Margaritaville” Friday, Oct. 12 at her home in Windermere. Guests are encouraged to dress in “island chic” attire and come by to enjoy island-themed food, frozen margaritas and music.

Event committee members involved in the community nominate an honoree who has made a difference in the community to receive the Heart of Cornerstone Award. This event’s honoree is Dr. Michael Armbruster, associate superintendent at Orange County Public Schools. “(Guests) can expect a relaxing, mix-and-mingle evening of gourmet food, open complimentary bar including frozen margaritas, live music from The Beach Vibes, and we have a special guest performance,” Felder said.

Norman retired from UPS in 1999 to spend more time with his wife, children and soon-tobe grandchildren. Norman had several hobbies but was locally known for his exceptional gardening and woodworking skills.

He was also a proud “Scottish American,” having roots traced

back to the sixth century. He enjoyed genealogy and reading about Scottish history and shared this passion with his son.

Norman never met a stranger and was a man of strong faith, character, integrity and passion.

Norman is preceded in death by his father, Dalton; and his mother, Emma. He is survived by his wife, Mable; his two children, Kim (Bill) and Kirk; his two grandchildren, Dalton and Sophia; his sister, Barbara; and several cousins, nieces, a nephew and an aunt.

A Celebration of Norman’s Life will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at the First Baptist Church of Montverde. Friends and family are welcome to attend.

Longtime Windermere resident Rosemary Calabro, 94, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Sept.

25, 2018, at The Gardens at Lakeview assisted-living facility in Winter Garden, where she received excellent care for the past two years from the compassionate caregivers.

Rosemary was preceded in death by her loving husband of 73 years, Pasquale “Pat;” and their son, Richard.

On Saturday, Sept. 29, 2018, David Norman Fleming, loving husband and father of two children, passed away at the age of 76.

A proud Winter Garden native, Norman was born on Nov. 29, 1941, to Dalton and Emma (Woodley) Fleming. He graduated from Lakeview High School in 1960 and proceeded to study mechanical drafting in Orlando.

On June 28, 1963, he married Jimmie Mable Martin, of Winter Garden. In 1965, Norman was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany.

Milton A. Davis, age 84, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 30. From his birth in December 1933 in Broome County, New York, to his passing on Sunday, Sept.

There was a lot to absorb for the Windermere Prep football team after its thunderous 35-7 win over stateranked Foundation Academy Oct. 5.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since 2013, when Foundation Academy won 38-6 in a game with relatively low stakes. This

time, both teams entered the game undefeated, and the Lions were ranked No. 4 in the state in Class 2A, and the Lakers are regarded as the team to beat in the Sunshine State Athletic Conference.

There was a buzz to this showdown, as local media — including several television stations — lined the sidelines at Foundation’s new on-campus field. The line of cars trying to get into the game backed out on to Tilden Road.

The Olympia and Windermere girls golf teams squared off Oct. 5 at West Orange Country Club in an unusual fashion, choosing to utilize a match-play format. The Titans and the Wolverines tied, 2-2, with one match being a draw. Malaya Engler and Angelina Burgess won for Olympia, and Laila Delgado and Kate Herod won for Windermere.

The Metro Conference West Championship took place for boys golf last week at Forest Lake Golf Club, with the Windermere Wolverines taking the title.

Windermere placed first scoring 279 as a team, besting runner-up Dr. Phillips (294) and third-place Olympia (299). West Orange placed fifth, and Olympia’s Jonah Leach was the top individual with a score of 63 on the par-72 course.

Windermere High will host a big volleyball showdown Oct. 11 as the Wolverines (15-4) host the West Orange Warriors (16-6).

The rivalry match will pit former teammates against one another and is the final match of the regular season for both squads. District tournaments begin next week.

What has been your favorite part of going to school at Dr. Phillips High?

Just the culture — I feel like DP just has it over all these other schools. I think everybody can agree on that.

that in all three of the previous meetings between the two programs, it had been Foundation that had emerged victorious.

For Lakers head coach Jacob Doss, there was even more to absorb, and in a literal sense — the veteran coach had been drenched in Gatorade by his players following the big win.

“It did mean a lot — Foundation is one of the best football teams in Central Florida,” Doss said as he dried off. “Every year, they are good. The fact that we’d never beaten them meant a lot. …

You could see our boys took that upon themselves to really play for something bigger than them.”

In a battle of two of Central Florida’s best passing attacks, it was the defense for Windermere Prep (6-0) that shined brightest.

Once again, defensive coordinator Rob Hollway’s unit limited a strong scoring offense to well below its season average of 25.3 points per game beforehand.

“Any time we’re in a big game, Coach Hollway gets those boys so ready to play — they’re so aggressive,” Doss said. “We had two defenses in tonight with very aggressive schemes. … It was really fun to watch those guys pin their ears back and just go.”

What is a movie you could watch over and over again?

It would definitely be “ATL.” (My siblings and I) — we know the whole movie. We can quote every line.

The Dr. Philips volleyball team is having a strong season — the Panthers are 19-5 at press time — and senior Mallory Porcher has been an important part of the team’s success. Porcher, who is committed to play college volleyball for North Carolina A&T, leads the team in kills (131) and is among the team’s top blockers at the net.

How do you view the season for your team so far?

We have a lot of wins, and I think (in) the ones we’ve lost, we went to five (sets) in most of them. … I think with our relationships outside of playing, we’re just all really close, and that helps a lot on the court.

Which win so far this season has been the most memorable?

Definitely beating Olympia this year — we beat them in three (sets). I think that was our first time (sweeping them) in a long time. After the game, our student section brought a broom out — that was fun.

When did you start playing volleyball?

I started when I was 11. I was playing tennis before when I lived in Michigan, but I came down here and realized it was way too hot outside — it wasn’t for me.

What did you like about volleyball?

It was just different — I’d never really played a team sport. Just moving down here and getting to know a bunch of different people, I thought it was really cool.

This season, which concluded last month, was his last — Harrelson, 77, is calling it a career. The 2018 season was a goodbye tour of sorts for Hawk, and the final goodbye came Sept. 23 with the White Sox’s 6-1 loss to — who else — the Chicago Cubs.

A tearful Harrelson signed off for the last time from the booth at Guaranteed Rate Park, and White Sox fans around the country — myself included — teared up a bit with him.

Growing up watching the Sox, Hawk’s unconventional style, catchphrases (dubbed “Hawkisms” by many) and over-the-top support for the Sox combined to create the soundtrack of my baseball fanhood.

“Can-o-corn” is a routine fly ball.

“Stretch” was usually said when a Sox player hits a fly ball and Hawk wanted it to “stretch” over the fence for a home run.

a physicality and intensity befitting of a rivalry.

“We knew we had to match their physicality and be better, because they’re a physical team,” Windermere Prep senior receiver Khadry Jackson said. “Every single play we had to be physical — we had to set the tone.”

For Windermere Prep, which has been at or around the top of the SSAC since 2014, the win was especially significant because of its implications — and the buzz.

“That’s a team that’s going to go on to the regional playoffs,” Doss said. “It was really cool to see the media here tonight — our boys were so pumped and when you play a team with Foundation’s reputation, that’s what you’re going to get.”

Foundation Academy had been state-ranked in Class 2A, and the win was a big statement for a program like Windermere Prep in the independent SSAC, which is sometimes viewed as a lesser brand of football.

“We just showed that just because we play in the SSAC doesn’t mean that we can’t compete,” Jackson said. “I played at Olympia, and I played here.

There’s a lot of guys on our team (who) are physical — and physicality, speed and athleticism are good at any school in Florida.”

Your father was a professional football player, and your brother plays Division I college football. Is there friendly smack-talk at the dinner table during the holidays?

They try to say they are better at football than I am at volleyball. But they don’t really understand the game like that, and I don’t understand football, either. But I’m the first female in my whole family to get a scholarship for college volleyball, so I’m pretty proud of myself, and they’re proud of me, too.

What led you to commit to North Carolina A&T? Being a HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) school, it’s very diverse.

That’s kind of how (Dr. Phillips) is — it’s really diverse. I fell in love with the campus, and the coaches are really nice. It’s a great fit for me.

In fact, it was a play by the Lakers’ defense that staved off the only momentum the Lions were able to put together.

Danny Stutsman had recovered a botched punt snap by Windermere Prep at the 14-yard line, priming Foundation Academy for its first score — a touchdown pass from Henry Austad to Grayson Wagner. With the extra point, that sequence cut the Lakers’ lead to 21-7 midway through the third quarter, and Foundation’s defense got a stop on the next drive to return the ball to the Lions.

A pass to a Foundation receiver in the flat was knocked loose, though, and Matthew Kane picked up the fumble for a 43-yard scoop-and-score touchdown that effectively closed the door on any comeback attempt.

“The longer I’ve been in coaching, the more I realize momentum is everything,” Doss said. “Turnovers like that — they had the momentum and they’re clawing to get back in. We changed the momentum with a fumble like that, and it’s backbreaking.”

For two teams that had not met in five years — meaning no current players were on the roster for the last meeting — the game had

“Mercy!” A great play, usually made by a White Sox. “You can put it on the board … yes!” That was the signature call for a Sox home run — and another Hawkism I internalized for life.

“Dagnambit!” Pretty selfexplanatory.

There are dozens of others — “Kansas City Special,” “ducksnort” and “hang wuf’ ‘em” — and their meanings often are the subject of debate among Sox fans. One thing no one disagrees on is that Ken Harrelson loved his White Sox — and Sox fans loved him for it.

Professional sports such as baseball, basketball and hockey usually have broadcast teams specific to each team for games that are not national telecasts.

These broadcasters only follow the one team, so that obviously informs their broadcast style and understanding of their audience (usually the local market). Still, they are generally expected to uphold standards of not outwardly rooting for the team.

Hawk never cared much about that — to Harrelson, being a “homer” was always the biggest compliment someone could pay him.

How else could a broadcast announcer — literally paid to

talk — make extended bouts of frustrated silence work when the Sox were playing poorly?

Or there was the time a Cubs pitcher hit multiple White Sox players, and Hawk — in his 70s — implied on the air he would meet that pitcher in the locker room after the game.

All of which is not to ignore that Hawk always has been a divisive character. GQ named him the worst announcer in baseball in 2010, and even some Sox fans are not necessarily Hawk fans.

But for me, I’ll always remember Hawk calling some of the signature moments in White Sox history — his call of Mark Buehrle’s perfect game in 2009 stands out, as Hawk shouted “Yes! Yes! Yes! History!” as the final out was recorded.

He loved my favorite baseball player — Frank Thomas — and my favorite team as much as I did.

Perhaps I’ll see Hawk around Southwest Orange on a golf course, but just in case I don’t, I wanted to thank him here. My baseball fanhood was better because of Hawk Harrelson, and he had one heck of a career.

As for now?

“He gone.”

THE FIRST ACADEMY (5-0) AT TRINITY PREP (1-6) The Royals figure a good bet to inch one game closer to another undefeated regular season when they travel to play the Saints. Trinity Prep is experiencing a down year that has included a forfeit in Week Three and a defense that allows 36.7 points per game. As for the Royals, Rolous Frazier leads TFA’s ground game with nine rushing touchdowns and an average of 117 yards per game.

LAKE MARY PREP (1-5) AT WINDERMERE PREP (6-0), 4:30 P.M. It’s hard to envy the Griffins, who will come to Horizon West to take on the Lakers right after their victory over state-ranked Foundation Academy. The Griffins are scoring just 11.7 points per game — while allowing 33.8 — and are led on offense by senior running back Camden Desch, who averages a formidable 5.3 yards per carry.

FREEDOM (1-6, 0-2 DISTRICT) AT DR. PHILLIPS (2-5, 2-0 DISTRICT) The Panthers enter a must-win stretch of three games to end the season, beginning with the Patriots. After winning in Week Two, the Patriots have dropped five consecutive games and are allowing 38.8 points per game during that stretch.

UNIVERSITY CHRISTIAN (4-2) AT FOUNDATION ACADEMY (6-1) Things will not get any easier on the Lions, who suffered their first defeat of the season last week, as they continue to navigate their toughest stretch of the regular season. University Christian was the state runner-up in Class 2A in 2017 and is formidable again this fall.

Junior running back Max McClendon shoulders much of the offensive attack for University, averaging 94 rushing yards per game and seven yards per carry.

Despite losses, playoffs remain in play for Olympia, DP C

ombined, the Olympia Titans and the Dr. Phillips Panthers have 10 losses between them through the first seven weeks of the season — both teams are 2-5.

It is a stark contrast from a year ago at this point, when the neighboring rivals had combined for half as many losses — the Titans were 4-3 and the Panthers were 5-2.

And yet, with both teams at 2-0 in Class 8A, District 5, the context for the remainder of the regular season for both programs is much the same as it was a year ago. The meeting between the two Oct. 19 will go a long way toward deciding the district title — and the playoff berth that comes with it.

The difference is that, this time around, the loser of the Week Nine matchup only will have a slim chance of making the postseason via the FHSAA’s playoff points system. In 2017, Dr. Phillips defeated Olympia to seal the district, but Olympia still made the playoffs thanks to its six wins and strength of schedule. This fall, given the slow start for each team, making the playoffs as an at-large is less likely.

Dr. Phillips was ranked seventh in Class 8A, Region 2 in the latest power rankings, with an average of 38.00. Unfortunately for the Panthers, their remaining three opponents have four wins between them and likely will all be Category 4 wins, which count for 35 points

Olympia’s power rankings context is even more dire. The Titans’ average of 34.50 has them ranked 13th in the region.

The Titans, who only have Category 3 and Category 4 opponents remaining, almost certainly would have to win the district to make the playoffs.

Fortunately for both squads, that possibility is still in play — at least until they play one another Oct. 19.

WOLVERINES STRUGGLE ON ROAD

A 78-yard touchdown run by Austin Hatcher in the first quarter Oct. 5 allowed the Windermere Wolverines to hang with district-leading Harmony Longhorns for the first quarter, at least.

But that touchdown — which came with 5:46 remaining in the opening quarter — would be the only of the night for Windermere (1-5, 1-3 district).

The Longhorns (6-1, 4-0 district) scored 31 unanswered points to close out the district contest, including four points on a pair of safeties in the third quarter. The final score: 38-6.

Besides Hatcher’s big run and 92 total rushing yards, highlights for the Wolverines included Dylan Palmers 12 tackles and two forced fumbles.

The win for Harmony sets up a big-time showdown at Lake Nona (5-1, 3-0 district) Friday, with the Class 7A, District 5 title likely at stake.
