AMC revamps West Oaks cinema with reclining seats, dining options The West Oaks Mall theater in Ocoee has undergone significant renovations to create a better moviegoing experience.

With the recent completion of AMC Theatres’ renovation of the West Oaks 14 cinema, visiting Ocoee’s West Oaks Mall theater now will feel like a whole new experience.

The theater, at 9415 West Colonial Drive, now features new movie screens, upgraded sound systems, a new lounge area, an expanded dining menu and reclining seats.

“With a press of a button, guests are able to sit back and adjust to their seats to their preference allowing them to enjoy their movie in the most comfortable way possible,” said Kimberly Sanden, AMC’s corporate communication coordinator.

The theater renovations — a multi-million dollar project — began in May and were completed in mid-September, Sanden said.

The renovations also include an increase in ticket prices, from between $3.99 and $5.99 to $4.49 and $8.99.

This has been a wildly popular amenity as guests no longer have to stress about where they are going to sit or arriving extra early to get their preferred seat.”

And for movie-goers 21 or older, AMC now offers adult beverages.

“Also new at this theater is the AMC MacGuffins Bar, offering

guests over 21 years old to order a beer, wine or premium cocktail to enjoy with during their movie or before and after at the brand new lounge area,” Sanden said.

Steven Maksin, CEO and founder of the Moonbeam Capital Investments LLC, believes the renovations will bring more visitors to the mall.

“West Oaks Mall is very pleased to be able to offer the community a state-of-the-art movie theater, which brings additional foot traffic to the mall, stimulates the local economy and improves the quality of life in the Ocoee area,” he said.

Motorists who frequently cross the intersection of East Fullers Cross Road and East Crown Point Road were promised that road improvements were coming soon to the stressed intersection.

However, more than a year has passed, leading area residents to wonder what happened to the city’s plans to add a traffic light, a left-turn lane on E. Crown Point Road, and both right and left-turn lanes on E. Fullers Cross Road.

The intersection currently supports car traffic from several residential developments and schools, including Hope Charter School and Ocoee High School. But soon it will need to support more traffic from the incoming 191 singlefamily homes being built at McAllistair Landing at the western end of East Fullers Cross Road and the light-industrial development under construction in Ocoee on East Crown Point Road and Palm Drive — known as The Park at 429.

Winter Garden resident Dexter Blois said navigating the intersection is nearly impossible with all the congestion that plagues the intersection during rush hour.

“There wasn’t much traffic before, but now there is with all the development that exists along East Fullers Cross Road and the development coming to the road,” Blois said. “There’s a development coming in with about 190 houses at what we call Dead Man’s Curve — they just started building the houses. When those houses empty out and they want to go to work or get to the 429, or Ocoee, Apopka, Orlando — that’s the outlet.”

Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said city staff hit a snag during the process.

“The hold-up is from one property owner who has not been cooperating with us with the purchase of the right-of-way,” Bollhoefer said. “We’ve been trying to negotiate with that one property owner who won’t sell us the property. So we’re going to have to eminent domain it. We just instructed our attorneys to draft the resolution.

At the next meeting, we should have the resolution and start the process of eminent domain.”

If the city commission approves the resolution, Bollhoefer expects to start construction within six months, he said.

Local prints 3D prosthetics troops, robotics teams and more who are using 3D-printed technology to create positive change in the world. Maxwell prints kits and sends them to the organization, which then distributes them to students and children for assembly and learning. Additionally, he works with the Million Waves Project, which takes recycled plastic cleaned from the ocean and turns it into 3D-printable material, or filament.

It all started with a broken leg, a 3D printer and a replacement lever for a soap dispenser.

In April 2017, Winter Garden resident Barry Maxwell was temporarily homebound and in a wheelchair after breaking his leg.

Unable to easily go up and down the stairs in his home, he needed a new hobby that he could enjoy downstairs to occupy his mind.

So, he decided to buy a 3D printer. One of the first things he made was a replacement lever for a soap dispenser in his home. He also helped his daughter by making a few parts for her jewelry, which she sells on Etsy.

Fast-forward to today, and Maxwell has put his newest hobby to good use by creating and building 3D-printed prosthetic limbs for children who need them.

THE ART OF 3D

For Maxwell, the choice to get into 3D printing was simple.

“It speaks to the engineer in me — even though I’m not an engineer — but it’s something hands-on you can do and make interesting things with,” said Maxwell, a former U.S. Navy aviator who now works for a defense contractor. “It just seemed like a fun thing. You learn about how they work. The software (is) standard downloadable software, open-source for design and hardware. There’s a very large thriving community around it.”

He now has two Prusa-brand 3D printers in his workshop downstairs, and he constantly is thinking of things he can make with them. After tinkering around in the beginning by making figurines, household items and little toys for neighborhood children, it was time to look at the bigger picture.

“There are only so many things in the house you can fix,” he said.

“I’d seen things on 3D-printed hands and prosthetics before, and I found a couple of organizations

that I kind of work and cooperate with to do it.”

Maxwell works with three organizations — Enabling the Future, ENABLE Alliance and the Million Waves Project — to create 3D-printed prosthetic hands for children on a case-by-case basis, as well as kits that can be assembled

by Boy Scout troops or students. “(If) one organization says, ‘Hey, I need five, 10, 15 of this, can you make those?’ I make and send them off and they have Boy Scout troops or schools or whatever assemble them, and then they get sent off all of the world,” he said. “Some of the hands I’ve made are in Nepal being used. Some went to Canada and Mexico. They literally send all over the world.”

POSITIVE PARTNERSHIP

Because Maxwell is qualified to create prosthetic hands with Enabling the Future, he has access to a web interface that allows him to search for cases worldwide of people who are in need of limbs.

“Some of them are from amputations, birth defects or defects of war,” he said. “I like to help kids, because most doctors’ prostheses won’t fit children, because they outgrow them. A true professional prosthetic costs thousands of dollars, especially if you want it to do anything (functional). Otherwise, they just make one for appearance.

that is functional and yet is not going to cost them. It costs them nothing; this is all done by volunteers.”

Most recently he has made hands and prosthetic limbs for two little girls, 5-year-old Blakeley and 6-year-old Elizabeth, through Enabling the Future. Elizabeth, who lives in Alabama, was born with a partial hand. Thanks to Maxwell and Enabling the Future, she has a prosthetic now that allows her to ride her bike. Blakeley, who lives in Oregon, had amniotic band syndrome and her arm stopped about halfway down the forearm. She can now grip and pick up her toys as she plays.

city’s millage rate at 5.5 mills for fiscal year 2018-2019. Commissioners also voted unanimously to adopt ordinance 2018-034, which sets the final budget.

The millage rate for FY 2017-18 was 5.6546. The millage rate of 5.5 mills for fiscal year 2018-19 is 2.145% higher than the rollback rate of 5.3820 mills. Revenues for fiscal year 2018-2019 total $80,355,941, and expenditures for the upcoming fiscal year total $77,082,617, according to Finance Director Rebecca Roberts.

Mayor Rusty Johnson said the city is able to lower the millage rate because of new businesses that have been coming into the city.

“We can financially do it with the growth that we’ve had in economic development,” Johnson said. “We can afford to do that. …

We are starting to get commercial (businesses). We are starting to get economic development that pays more taxes into the city.”

Roberts added that, because of

this growth, there are more properties in the community that can be taxed.

“The millage rate they set it at provides even more revenue,” she said. “Because of the growth … we have more properties that are in our community. So, as more properties are taxed, the (millage) rate can go lower and still generate enough revenues.”

During public comments, Chris Adkins was the only resident who spoke about the budget. Like he did at Sept. 12 budget hearing, Adkins suggested commissioners lower the millage rate and consider funding an audit of each of the city’s departments.

“A lot of people tie this (audit) directly to financial issues, and that’s not necessarily the case when you’re doing an audit,” Adkins said, adding that he has a background in operations and audits. “(An audit is) about efficiency, it’s about productivity, it’s about hard assets. An audit goes much deeper than a dollar figure.”

certified auditor, said he supported the idea of conducting an audit by department.

“I definitely still think we should be doing one,” Grogan said. “We got to figure it out … department by department and go from there.”

Commissioner George Oliver also supported the idea of an audit.

“I would support an audit if we can come to some kind of consensus as to how we will go about doing it, when we would go about doing it and what would be the cost to do such an audit,” Oliver said.

Adkins also mentioned the need for a new fire station in the northwest area of the city. In response, Grogan said a fire station in the northwest part of the city is in the works. He then informed Adkins of a presentation pertaining to a proposed fire station in the northwest area of the city that was given during the Sept. 18 commission meeting. The presentation was delivered by representatives of Summit Construction, who proposed building the new fire station through a public-private partnership.

“We’re working on that (fire station) right now,” Grogan said.

“It’s gonna be going in … that’s happening.”

A HANDY SOLUTION

Maxwell’s hands are mechanical.

The trick is customizing it to the individual in need. The basic design must be printed to size, which requires measurements such as arm length, hand length and wrist width to match the prosthetic to the good hand. This takes a couple of hours, but once files are generated, it’s time to print. Depending on complexity, the whole process can take between 20 and 30 hours.

Once assembly begins, it takes about two hours to fit everything properly and run the lines, which control the functionality of the fingers. If the hand includes an arm, recipients wear a sleeve around their biceps or forearm and slide it into the 3D arm. Then, a printed plate attached to the arm is formed around the biceps and strapped on with Velcro and padding.

“I tend to concentrate on kids more because everybody has a need, but to me, it has more of an impact if you can give a kid abilities that they didn’t have before,” he said. “To be able to have an impact on a child’s life like that, to me, is satisfying.”

And his wife, Diana, is amazed at how his broken leg turned into something so positive.

“He sets (the printer) up in the morning and goes to print (the pieces),” she said. “I check on them throughout the day, and they’re done by the time he gets home. ... I never thought when he bought this how it could change someone else’s life.”

A Toole Design Group engineer presented a conceptual design depicting the future of Dillard Street. The roadway is proposed to be retrofitted into a three-lane roadway, with one northbound and southbound lane and turn lanes. “Extra lanes wouldn’t help from a congestion perspective because the intersection at 50 is not going to change anyway,” said Ian Lockwood, a TDG engineer. “So you might as well use the space for something that contributes to the community, like bike facilities and nice landscaping.”

Dillard Street is currently a four-lane roadway with few pedestrian crosswalks. The conceptual design proposes three roundabouts, a bike trail and about a dozen pedestrian crosswalks.

During the meeting, Toole Design Group presented city leaders with the finished conceptual designs for Dillard Street Reconstruction Project, which focuses on the mile-long stretch of road from Plant Street to West Colonial Drive.

The concept design envisions an environmentally, bicyclistand pedestrian-friendly threelane corridor for the future Dillard Street intended to encourage slower speeds, said Ian Lockwood, a

Lockwood emphasized his firm has done everything it could to incorporate the requests of the community as expressed in prior community workshops. According to Lockwood, community input revealed a desire for a beautiful roadway with slower speeds that was easy for pedestrians and bicyclists to cross, but also attracted investment and included a connection to the West Orange Bike Trail and shade-providing trees.

“Right now, (Dillard Street) is a somewhat hostile, fast and dangerous street, so we’re trying to make it a friendly, green, multimodal street that would be attractive to most people,” Lockwood said. “And we completed the original concept for that, which has been enjoying a lot of community

support. Our job now is to help oversee the detailed engineering so that the intent makes it all the way through to construction and nothing gets lost in translation.”

According to the conceptual design, the future Dillard Street may include three roundabouts located at Plant Street, Smith Street and Story Road. It also would be constructed with permeable porous asphalt, which allows stormwater to get down to the water cable and reduces flooding in lakes and retention ponds, Lockwood said.

The design firm also proposed the addition of a dedicated twoway bike trail that connects to the West Orange Trail and about a

dozen pedestrian crosswalks.

Lockwood said the three proposed roundabouts are preferable to signalized intersections if the goal is safety and aesthetics, because they have been shown to reduce traffic crashes and encourage slower speeds.

“Signals actually encourage people to either speed up before the light turns red or stop completely, and you get rear-end crashes,” he said. “And what roundabouts do is they create a slow and steady speed profile. Most of the time, nobody would ever have to stop at those roundabouts — unless there’s a pedestrian there or you have to wait for someone already in the roundabout. So it keeps

Dillard also might become a three-lane roadway, with one northbound and one southbound, plus turn lanes, he said. Given the low volume of daily traffic the road receives, Lockwood’s firm does not see a need for more lanes. They believe the widening of the road years ago was a mistake, he said.

“The intersection at 50 — where the street’s the busiest — only has a double left-turn lane coming into it from the west, a single right-hand turn from the east, and a single through lane from the south,” he said. “And those lanes only get green time for a small portion of the traffic signal, so no matter how hard you try, you can never deliver more than one lane for the traffic through Dillard Street. You can’t get more traffic than the signal can deliver. ... So there’s no way you can get more than one lane’s worth of traffic.”

Ocoee town hall highlights upcoming projects DANIELLE HENDRIX BLACK TIE EDITOR

For two hours, Ocoee’s commission chambers became an educational ground for dozens of District 4 residents as they learned of ongoing and future projects in the community.

City Commissioner George Oliver hosted the town hall meeting Monday, Sept. 24, during which residents were briefed on his first 100 days in office and ideas for the city’s youth and upcoming projects. Additionally, heads of city departments informed citizens of services offered and projects under their jurisdiction.

Oliver started by giving citizens an overview of his first 100 days in office and added he wanted to maintain transparency.

“Some of the things I’ve voted for have a lot to do with the future of development,” he said. “I’m also one of those commissioners (who) looks at responsible development. There’s a way to develop but there’s also a way to do it responsibly. … First and foremost, I’m here to be your voice. It’s about what you guys think, need and want in your communities.”

Oliver also discussed project proposals and youth initiatives, including the widening of Clarke Road, especially heading toward Clarcona-Ocoee Road, to account for large influxes of traffic during rush hour and future residential developments in the area. Another

one of his top priorities is investing in the city’s youth.

“We invest money into our different programs throughout the city … but to me personally, I think we need to invest in our youth, and that’s one of my goals,” he said.

“Some of the things I’m planning on doing, starting Jan. 1, is a youth council, where we’ll have kids from local high schools … to get the kids involved into our system and get them to understand how government works. They’re our future … and it’s important for them to know how this works.”

POLICE DEPARTMENT

The Ocoee Police Department currently has 88 sworn officers, but it soon will have three additional officers after the Ocoee City Commission approved funding at its final budget hearing last week, Chief Charlie Brown said.

And with recent state legislation requiring a school resource officer in every school, the city has had to shuffle resources around to be sure each school in its jurisdiction is covered.

“Some of the things that came up over the summer were the SROs and being able to service all of the schools,” Brown said. “We have more schools for our size than any other city in Orange County — seven traditional and three charter schools. Keeping up with that we had to get creative with the school board as far as covering the schools, but we do have

them covered and are contracted by some of the charter schools to hire officers.”

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Perhaps one of the biggest accomplishments this past year for Ocoee Fire Rescue was obtaining both an ISO 1 ranking and accreditation, Deputy Fire Chief Tim Hoover said. Out of more than 48,000 fire departments across the country, Ocoee ranks in the top 1% for having both.

In 2019, the department also will begin offering EMS transport.

Currently it can send an engine and rescue for distress calls but relies on a third-party rescue to stabilize and transport patients.

However, the department received approval from the commission to begin offering its own transport.

“We want continuity of care, so when we get to your house and assess you, that same transport will take you to the hospital,” Hoover said. “It will be a big improvement on response times.

We’re working on Medicaid/ Medicare licenses and everything you need to do to transport. Ocoee Fire Rescue will transfer citizens to the hospital starting in January.”

CITY PLANNING

City Planner Mike Rumer gave residents an overview of new development, including many new residential subdivisions cropping up now or planned for future. In District 4, there isn’t a

Rumer added that when he began work at the city 12 years ago, the population was 20,000. Today, that number is closer to 45,000 and does not include the pockets outside the city proper that are in its jurisdiction.

“You can see that by all the schools and with the traffic, and we’re trying to plan positively for the future, taking into account development plans that are successful such as the downtown overlay, utilizing the retail and working with the owners of the mall,” he said.

WEST OAKS MALL

Assistant City Manager Craig Shadrix told residents his staff has been working with the owners of West Oaks Mall — Moonbeam Capital Investments LLC. “People think it’s the city’s fault what’s happened to the mall, but we can only try to work with (Moonbeam) to make it better,” Shadrix said. “Moonbeam’s been a much better owner to work with.

Unfortunately, malls and retail are changing. … Internet shopping and similar type (of) initiatives have really taken a toll on retail as we know it. There are still successful malls in the U.S., but others have declined. Moonbeam has done a every good job of trying to bring employment into the mall. (West Oaks Mall) is kind of converting from a retail center to more of an employment center, and we’re still actively working with them to try to make it the best that (it) can be.”

Torres asked both pairs of candidates five questions relating to issues in West Orange and their plans to handle challenges that will come with their aspirational roles.

Lopez, a father to two, emphasized he is not part of the establishment and not a politician. He added he has served the community for 45 years and is a veteran who served in the U.S. Marines.

Mina, a 28-year Orange County resident – a U.S. Army veteran and father of two – emphasized that in his role as the chief of the Orlando Police Department, he is in charge of a $146-million budget and commands 1,000 personnel.

Mina added that, under his leadership, crime, use of force by police officers, juvenile arrests, and offi-

cer-involved shootings have gone down.

Particularly in Horizon West, response times continue to be a concern. Mina said as the county grows, the Sheriff’s Office needs to grow as well and added that he plans to request that Orange County commissioners increase funding for new deputies based on crime statistics.

Lopez said the OCSO is severely undermanned and the planning process for new infrastructure and roads should include consideration to OCSO’s ability to effectively police new-development areas.

ORANGE COUNTY DISTRICT 2

Rumph, who retired after a 30-year career with the Florida Department of Corrections, noted she has extensive experience in administration, budget management, and human resources during her career in criminal justice.

Moore said she understands the business community’s needs because she also has owned a business and helped manage Orange County Public Schools’ billiondollar budget before she stepped down from her role as the District 7 School Board member.

When asked about their plans to help streamline the building and permit process, Moore said she would consider trying a local structure or hiring a firm to adjust and improve the processes.

Rumph suggested the county reevaluate the process and consider setting up a system in which the county can monitor progress.

Food For The Poor’s Celebration of Hope Gala

he Food for the Poor nonprofit put on another successful fundraiser with its 19th annual Celebration of Hope Gala Saturday, Sept. 29. The gala, hosted in the Panzacola Ballroom at the Rosen Shingle Creek, had guests competitively bidding on gifts and art pieces at the silent auction before sitting down for dinner. The nonprofit aimed to raise enough funds to build 30 homes, each costing around $7,200, in Thomazeau, Haiti, through their House Rally — a fast-paced bidding competition that closed the night.

Meet Winter Garden’s ‘Yarn Gardener’ Winter Garden resident Jennifer Parrish enjoys using her self-taught crochet skills to beautify public spaces using colorful yarn and a bit of imagination.

Although slightly unconventional, Jennifer Parrish chooses to use signs, trees, bike racks and even benches as her artistic canvas.

Parrish, a four-year Winter Garden resident, is a self-taught yarn artist who picked up the hobby of yarn-bombing after becoming inspired by elaborate urban yarn-art projects she had seen on social media.

It wasn’t long after that she turned to YouTube to learn the craft herself and began challenging herself with bigger projects.

“I started yarn-bombing maybe four years ago, and at first, I was just doing a stem on a stop sign and a leaf,” Parrish said.

“Then I installed some eyeballs on a bench and things like that just for fun. And then some yarnbombers that I follow (on social media) out in California decided to do this monster-foot pattern and just try to get a bunch of us across the U.S, and world, to start

doing it and posting pictures with the hashtag.”

So Parrish decided to try the challenge herself. Her most recent project was two pairs of monster feet that took her four hours to complete. They were installed on the legs of a bench and table located at the West Oaks Branch Library in Ocoee.

Previously, she installed art on the West Orange Trail, but it was promptly removed.

With a background in horticultural science and a job in crop insurance, Parrish primarily enjoys attaching yarn art to trees and playfully dubs herself the “Yarn Gardener.”

“I was originally doing it on the West Orange Trail, and they would take it down almost immediately, because I didn’t ask for permission,” Parrish said. “But I have a kid now and a lot less time, so I decided if I was going to do it ,then I would do it somewhere that gave me permission where it would stay for a bit. So I approached the Winter Garden

When she first began the hobby, she practiced by making baby blankets and stuffed animals for friends. Once, she made a giant Stay Puft Marshmallow Man for her best friend’s son, who still carries it everywhere to this day.

Parrish also started a local artist group on Facebook a couple months ago called Orlando Craftivists. She hopes to take on larger collaborative art projects using their help, she said. She believes as long as the art can make someone smile, it’s worth

the time investment.

“I just really like how it makes people happy,” she said. “And it’s just really unexpected and quirky and weird. And it makes people laugh — I think that’s why I love doing it. Like this one day when I was doing it on the West Orange Trail and some guy came by and asked, ‘Why are you doing that?’

And I was like, ‘Uh. I don’t know, does it make you happy?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah.’ And I said, ‘Well, that’s why I do it.’”

Betty Benson Pounds, born May 14, 1923 in Forrest City, Arkansas, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 24, 2018.

Betty was crowned Miss Arkansas in 1940. When asked what her talent would be for the Miss America Pageant, she responded, “My looks, of course.” In the end, she performed a solo jitterbug wearing an altered man’s tuxedo.

West Orange bowlers Matt Delano, Sam Hamilton and Ryan Archer are leading the charge for the Warriors this fall.

A year ago, a talented junior class helped catapult the West Orange boys bowling team to state for the first time since 1995.

Now seniors, those boys have helped the team off to a strong start.

n 2017, the West Orange High boys bowling team made it to state for the first time since 1995.

It was a remarkable achievement for the Warriors, who finished as district runnersup to qualify for the game’s biggest stage in Florida.

That team was led largely by a strong, talented junior class. This

Williams, a senior running back, broke free for a 45-yard touchdown run on his first touch of the season against Stanford, helping to set the tone for a 38-17 win for Notre Dame. Williams rushed for 161 yards on the game.

West Orange alum Austin Gomber’s debut season in Major League Baseball came to an end along with his St. Louis Cardinals’ season Sept. 30. Gomber finished 2018 with a 4.44 ERA spanning 29 appearances. He had six wins to his credit, started 11 games and struck out 67 batters over 75 innings of work.

fall, they are seniors, and now that they have had a taste of competing at state, they are eager to return.

“There’s no question about it — the experience they gained last year has them even hungrier this year,” head coach John Colbert said. “They want to go back.”

Three of the seniors for West Orange — Ryan Archer, Matt Delano and Sam Hamilton — are the top three players for the Warriors in terms of averages. Archer averages a 200 game, Delanod a 195

and Hamilton a 191. Trevor Hackbardt, the team’s fourth senior who helped recruit Archer to the game several years ago, averages 180.

Beyond their scores, though, is something more. There is a team chemistry they believe is the secret to what got them over the hump in 2017 — and that they believe can take them even further in 2018.

For a freshman quarterback learning the game at the speed and intricacy of the varsity level, being thrust into a pivotal district game against the Wekiva Mustangs — and what is likely the best defense in the state — was no small task.

Madison Furtado Madison “Maddie” Furtado has been a student at CFCA for 13 years.

For nine of those, she has been on one of the Eagles’ volleyball teams.

A standout setter for the varsity team, Furtado is a senior this fall and is a playmaker and a role model for a young team playing under a new coach in Catie Schluter. Furtado, who plays club volleyball for Orlando Tampa Volleyball Academy, has high hopes of continuing her career in college.

After being in the program for nearly a decade, what’s it like to be a senior?

I definitely feel like I get a little bit more opportunities and definitely being a leader and teaching my teammates how to play and just being a big sister.

Which game so far this season has been the most memorable?

Definitely the Real Life (Christian Academy) game (3-2 win, Aug. 30). One of my old teammates plays for Real Life, so it was a big thing, and I really wanted to beat them. It was great, we had fun and played really well.

What’s the coolest place you’ve traveled for volleyball?

I’d have to say Washington, D.C. It was fun playing, but it was also fun bonding with my teammates and going to see the White House. That was in 2016.

What are your career goals?

I want to be a nurse, but I also want to be in the Army. After college, I want to graduate with my nursing degree and enlist as an officer.

Where does the call to serve come from for you?

I love that she, in practice, she’ll always do what we do. It makes us feel like, “If Coach is doing it, I can do it.” She’s very relatable, and we have lots of team-bonding moments.

What’s your favorite part about going to school at CFCA? Definitely the teachers — you connect on a personal level.

What do you like to do with your free time?

I have a job outside of school.

I also love ice skating — I used to take lessons when I was little. That’s one of my favorite things to do outside of volleyball.

How important to you is your faith?

Faith is definitely a huge part of my life. I had a lot of hard times when my dad was deployed and I definitely had to lean on God. … I’m part of the praise team (at CFCA), and I do everything I can to have God as part of my life.

“Last year, we bonded as a team — and this year, we’re doing the same thing,” Delano said.

Colbert, a veteran coach for the team, said the camaraderie the players share is huge — especially when it comes to important matches and the postseason.

The athletes agreed.

“Team chemistry is a pretty big thing,” Hamilton said.

“We’ve gotten pretty close and hung out (outside of bowling) many times.”

The success this fall is tangible. Last week, the Warriors beat Evans (2,082-1,687) Sept.

25, Olympia and Timber Creek in a three-way match Sept. 26, and Windermere (2,661-2,558) in a match Sept. 27.

Then on Sept. 29, the team competed in the ultra-competitive Kegel High School Challenge in Lake Wales and placed fourth. The respectable finish put them ahead of district rival Apopka — FHSAA state champions the past five years running

— which placed ninth.

The two teams will meet in a regular-season match Oct. 4 and again in the district tournament Oct. 30. The Warriors beat the Blue Darters for the first time two years ago but came up short in 2017.

“Everything we’re doing is geared toward beating Apopka,” Colbert said. “We know they’re very good — we respect them — but we also know we’re very good.”

The rivalry with Apopka serves as an added incentive for West Orange’s senior class to push one another — whether that is during the regular season, or in the spring or the summer, when they also compete together.

“Without them, I’d probably be a little less than what I

am now,” Archer said. “They’ve pushed me, and I kind of have been doing the same with them, also. We’ve been helping each other out, basically the whole way.”

Beyond the four seniors, the Warriors have talented juniors helping out in Brandon Staley (183 average) and Carlos Gomez (179 average).

Together, they hope the consistency across the lineup can overcome teams they will encounter in the postseason with heavy-hitter players who average closer to the mid-200s.

“We have a deep lineup,” Colbert said. “When everyone is willing to shoulder their share of the burden, and we go out there and do what we’re supposed to do, it’s a pretty fun day for us, usually.”

injury after scrambling to pick up a first down in the third quarter, that was what happened.

Calvez had to contend with a defensive unit with the likes of defensive tackle Tyler Davis (30 FBS offers), defensive lineman Norell Pollard (Virginia Tech commit), safety Brandon Hill (Pittsburgh commit) and several others. Not only that, but with the Warriors trailing 22-7 when he entered the game, he also was tasked with trying to lead a come-frombehind effort.

That is exactly what happened.

Calvez threw a touchdown pass to the far corner of the end zone on his second play, connecting with Jaylon Carlies.

That was the first of four scoring drives on which the freshman led the Warriors, including a two-minute drill with the game on the line that set up the winning field goal by Colton Scharfield. That kick, with 17 seconds left, gave the Warriors a 30-29 lead that became the final score.

After a first half during which the only touchdown the Warriors could muster was on a pick-six interception, the offense came alive in the most unlikely of circumstances to set the stage for the most unlikely of wins.

Afterward, the man of the hour was gracious, crediting everyone but himself.

“I just thank my offensive line — my offensive line was the one kept me in,” Calvez said. “I was just thankful that I had the opportunity to do this and it’s all because of Elijah Stimmell and coach (Vernon) Mitchell that I had the opportunity to do this, because they prepare me every day for this.”

Calvez was humble — and he was also 100% correct.

was an ensemble production that took the entire team to complete.

For starters, the task of keeping the Wekiva pass rush — led

by Pollard and Davis — at bay fell squarely on the shoulders of the Warriors’ offensive line, and they rose to the occasion.

Then there was the playcalling. Mitchell, the offensive coordinator for the past three seasons at West Orange, had to adjust his plans on the fly. As a freshman, Calvez does not have the same arm strength as Stimmell, a senior, and so the plays dialed up by Mitchell had Calvez repeatedly making quick, short throws to his speedy wide receivers.

Mitchell called a game in the third and fourth quarters that took a very big moment and made it as manageable as possible for the next man up.

And then there was Stimmell.

Getting injured in what is

possibly the biggest home game of the season is a tough pill for any player to swallow.

Instead of sulking, though, Stimmell was active on the sideline — crutches and all — and was offering encouragement to Calvez when the West Orange defense was on the field.

As for that defense, all they did was hold Wekiva scoreless in the fourth quarter, as the Warriors made their comeback.

The big story from West Orange’s upset of Wekiva — the No. 2 team in the state and a top-35 team in the nation — was that a freshman, backup quarterback had led the team to victory.

But the story behind the story was the guys behind the guy. Whatever happens the rest of the way this fall, that was a win folks in Winter Garden are unlikely to forget any time soon.

LEGACY (3-2) AT FIRST ACADEMY-LEESBURG (3-1) The Legacy Eagles come off their bye week with a big game against the Eagles from Leesburg. First AcademyLeesburg earned one of its wins by way of forfeit, so the Eagles have played only three games and are allowing 27 points per game.

JONES (4-1) AT WEST ORANGE (5-1) The Warriors will have their work cut out for them again in Week Seven. Jones is on a four-game winning streak during which it has averaged 47.5 points per game and won by an average margin of 39 points.

OCOEE (2-4, 0-2) AT WEST PORT (1-5, 0-3) The Knights and Wolfpack each enter this game looking for their first district win. West Port’s offense revolves around senior quarterback Brian Maurer, who has thrown for 1,802 yards and 16 touchdowns through six games. The defense for the Wolfpack has been an issue, though, allowing 35.3 points per game.

CFCA (2-3) AT BISHOP MCLAUGHLIN (3-1) The Eagles will travel to Spring Hill as they attempt to shake off a three-game losing streak. Bishop McLaughlin is led by a strong ground game that averages 235 rushing yards per game — anchored by running back Adam Berry (295 yards, four touchdowns and quarterback James Frick (226 yards, four touchdowns.

he FHSAA released its first playoff points system power rankings Sept. 25 and, in doing so, began to provide some clarity to evolving playoff races around the state.

Locally, Foundation Academy (6-0) was the big winner of the debut rankings.

The Lions, 5-0 at the time of the release of the rankings, were ranked No. 1 in Class 2A, Region 2. Their points average of 41.80 topped Victory Christian’s 38.80 in second place.

The Lions followed that news by improving to 6-0 for the first time in program history — albeit by unusual circumstances.

Foundation Academy had been set to host The Nation Christian Academy Sept. 28, but the team informed the Lions Sept. 26 it would be forfeiting the game.

Per the FHSAA 2018-19 Football Manual, the Lions are awarded the same amount of points for defeating The Nation Christian by way of forfeit as they would have had the two teams played. And because the Eagles (0-5) are winless, that number is the minimal 35 for beating a Category 4 team.

Because of The Nation Christian’s record, the win was inevitably going to bring down the Lions’ points average, although with a victory, the decrease was manageable. Updated power rankings will be released after press time, but the win unofficially will lower Foundation’s average to 40.66. That should be enough to keep the Lions in first place in their region — Victory Christian (6-0) earned a Category 2 win against Frostproof (4-2) that should bring the Storm to an average of 40.33.

In Class 1A-4A, six teams per region make the postseason, with all six berths based on the power rankings (districts were eliminated in those classifications). The means that even with the tightening race for the region’s top seed, the Lions find themselves in a good spot at the midway point of the season — both to make the playoffs and to secure a bye in the first round.
