20, the cook-off featured nearly a dozen varieties of kugel, prepared by contest entrants. Those in attendance sampled each kugel and cast their vote for the most creative kugel and the overall best kugel. Winners were Stephanie Levine and Dr. Phyllis Bochman, respectively.

Steak lovers in Dr. Phillips have a new place to go for a prime cut of beef.

The H Cuisine held its grand opening Wednesday, Sept. 12.

The Mediterranean steakhouse is located on Restaurant Row within the Marketplace at Dr. Phillips Shopping Center, 7512 Dr. Phillips Blvd., Suite 80.

Restaurant Row’s newest casual, fine-dining restaurant offers a diverse menu created by chefs with international culinary experience. The restaurant has an open kitchen that allows guests to see their food being prepared and feel the warmth of the fire from the different firecooking techniques the chefs use to prepare the meals.

“Our cooking style is different than regular steakhouses,” said owner Fuat Hasoglu, adding that one thing that sets them apart is how the restaurant dry ages its steaks. “The (dry-aging) refrigerator is filled with Himalayan salt blocks, so the salt is always running in the air (in the refrigerator). … When you taste them, you can tell, easily, the difference between regular dry-aged (steak) and our dryage (steak).”

Hasoglu added the restaurant was inspired partially by the steakhouses in his home country of Turkey. He said another aspect that makes his restaurant unique are its “show plates,” which are partly prepared in the kitchen and then finished off tableside in front of the guest.

Additionally, The H offers “reserve dishes” that guests have to order in advance, because the dishes take a lot of preparation. One of those is the Osso Bucco, a veal shank that has been braised for hours with root vegetables and red wine.

“It takes eight hours to 12 hours (to prepare),” Hasoglu said. “It depends on the (size of the) meat.”

In addition to steaks, the menu also offers salads, burgers, seafood and pasta dishes. The H Cuisine places an emphasis on freshness. Meals are made from scratch, and nothing is kept frozen. Additionally, many of the restaurant’s spices and desserts are imported from Turkey, Hasoglu said.

“There’s nothing frozen here — except ice cream,” Hasoglu said with a laugh. “Our (ingre-

Rick Singh appeals Disney resort market value decision Orange County’s property appraiser filed the appeal following a judge’s ruling regarding a Disney-owned resort’s revised market value of $209 million.

Orange County Property Appraiser Rick Singh on Sept. 13 appealed a judge’s decision to reduce the appraised value of the Disneyowned Yacht and Beach Club Resort by nearly 40%.

In 2015, The Yacht and Beach Club Resort, located on a 65-acre property at 1700 Epcot Resorts Blvd., was appraised by the OCPA at a value of $336.9 million, but Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, U.S. Inc., challenged that valuation with a lawsuit.

The property appraiser currently has 33 open cases filed against him by Disney, said Beth Watson, who works as a communications and external affairs manager for Singh. But this latest suit, which disputes the market value of the hotel for the 2015 tax year, claimed the methodology used to assess the resort’s value at $336.9 million was flawed.

Instead, Disney believes the value should have been $188,673,081,

according to court documents.

In the 2014 tax year, the resort was valued at $154.2 million, meaning its appraised value increased 118% in 2015. According to court documents, the increase was partially because the OCPA office included the revenue generated from retail shops and restaurants located on the property to assess the resort’s value — an income of $73.7 million.

“The property appraiser … included approximately $74 million of ancillary income from Disney’s sale of food, beverages, merchandise and other goods and services attributed to retail and restaurant shops operating on the premises of the Yacht and Beach Club,” court documents state. “The main issue in this case is whether it was legally proper to include this ancillary income in determining the just value of said property.”

According to court documents, Disney had never had to provide income or expense information to the OCPA’s office for the pre-

ceding 28 years, but for the 2015 tax year, the OCPA requested such information to complete its appraisal. However, Disney declined to provide it, which was its right, courts documents state. “(Because) Disney did not provide the specific income and expense figures requested, the property appraiser had to use its best efforts to determine said income and expense figures using other methods,” court documents state.

Disney later submitted the requested income and expense information and hired experts to counter OCPA’s calculation, but the court determined it was too late. However, it did allow Disney to challenge OCPA’s use of ancillary income in its assessment.

Ultimately, the court determined the income approach was the most appropriate method of appraisal for the resort. So it used figures and expenses as calculated by Disney’s own experts, but excluded the ancillary income of $73.7 million used by the OCPA and replaced it with the projected rental income from the resort’s restaurant and retail operations, which amounted to $1.74 million.

calculations for the 1,197-room hotel totaled $209 million.

But Singh challenges the hybrid methodology the judge used to come up with the revised value in the July 2018 ruling. Singh said standard appraisal methodologies for hotels include all sources of additional income — not just the rooms.

Singh expects a revision of Judge Thomas Turner’s ruling will reveal the court made an error in its calculation. To support his point, Singh emphasized the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, located on a site about one-tenth of the size of the resort (6.6-acres) in downtown Orlando, has a market value of $254 million.

“We are confident that a closer review of the calculations used to determine value will result in the ruling being overturned,” Singh said. “It is simply illogical that The Yacht and Beach Club — with nearly 1,200 guest rooms and (more than) 100,000 square feet of meeting space — has a market value of $209 million.”

VanderLey: Water levels pose danger CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey, whose office has received a few calls about high water levels in lakes due to the recent heavy rainfall.

“We have several areas where some folks have put up sandbags and that kind of thing, because the water is very high,” VanderLey said. “Lake Nally is one of them. I also had a conversation with Mayor (Gary) Bruhn in Windermere, and he was sharing how high the water is on the (Butler Chain of Lakes). So it occurred to me that there’s a safety issue here, because people are still (using) the lakes. You don’t notice it in a

boat that the lakes are high, but you sure do on land.”

VanderLey said she feared a submerged dock might pose a danger to unsuspecting boaters.

“We have a lot of lakes and enclosed basins, such as in the Gotha area, where there’s no positive outfall for that water to go,” VanderLey said. “So the water levels are rising, and that creates a couple of problems. I’m concerned someone who is unfamiliar with a lake and out on a Jet Ski might run up onto a submerged dock that hasn’t been flagged … and someone might get injured.

So I want to make sure that as the water rises, we do some safetytype of fixes, such as marking

those docks. We don’t want to have to worry about a boating accident because the dock is submerged.”

The high water also poses a potential risk to lakefront residences, because large wakes from boats could cause the alreadyhigh water to reach yards and homes and cause property damage, she said. As such, the resolution encourages slow speeds and minimum wakes 300 feet from the shoreline, she said.

“A lot of boats create huge wakes … and the problem is that when they come close to shore ... because the lakes are so high, some of that water is washing right into people’s porches and

potentially into their home from that wake,” she said. “I’m trying to bring that to their attention, because I think they may not realize it’s washing up that high.”

VanderLey said the county is unable to enforce the posted signs because the county lacks the authority to mandate “no wake” zones.

“We don’t have any legal way to enforce it,” she said. “The (Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission) has purview over enforcing different behaviors on the lakes. We can only suggest that people be sensitive to their neighbors … because we don’t have any legal jurisdiction over the lakes.”

OCPS presents preliminary designs for planned elementary school GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR

Elected officials from both Orange County Public Schools and Orange County government held a joint community meeting Sept. 17 at Independence Elementary to discuss the details of a planned elementary school in Horizon West.

According to county documents, the school will be located on a 14.8acre property known as SummerLake PD. The property is situated on the south side of Porter Road, north of Wood Sage Drive and 150 feet west of Bluejack Oak Drive.

Preliminary designs show an access and exit point for cars will be on Porter Road, but school campuses require two access points.

So the district is requesting an amendment to add a second access point for a bus loop on the south side of the school, north of the intersection of Wood Sage Drive and Red Stopper Lane.

However, the current designs may be altered as OCPS and Orange County officials look into other options for the second access point, said Diana Dethlefs, administrative aide to District 1 Orange County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey. A traffic study will be conducted to determine the projected traffic flow and best options for a secondary access point and on-street parking, if deemed necessary, Dethlefs said.

Dethlefs said Porter Road would need to be modified to allow on-

street parking on one side, but both Wood Sage Drive and Bluejack Oak Drive are wide enough to accommodate on-street parking.

However, area residents at the meeting voiced concerns about on-street parking. Dethlefs said it would be difficult to enforce time restrictions to on-street parking.

During the second half of the meeting, OCPS officials presented the preliminary designs for the future elementary school.

The school, referred to as Site 85-E-W-4, is currently in the 30% design phase. It is being designed

by Rhodes+Brito Architects Inc. and will be constructed by OHL Construction, said District 4 School Board Member Pam Gould.

According to Rhodes+Brito representative Ruffin Rhodes, the building will be a two-story structure spanning 85,838 square feet.

Rhodes said the front of the school will face Porter Road, the parking lot will have 120 parking spaces and be able to hold up to 130 cars in the queue, and the campus will have space for 12 portables in the south, a bike rack, a tot lot, youth lot and ball field.

Some parents expressed doubt about the efficiency of the walking paths and entrances, which would have required students coming from Porter Road to loop around the whole campus to avoid having to cross a street. OCPS officials said they would review and modify the designs to correct the issue.

The district anticipates opening the school by June 2020.

It freaked me out, and I immediately went onto Facebook groups to ask if anyone else has had this experience. Then the next day, the ads kept popping up for like an hour, and some of them you couldn’t even click out of, so I told him to just close his computer and not do his homework.”

Bradley Shreffler, digital instruction coach at Bridgewater, said the ads are popping up more often because some websites that make money from ad views have started using Google Chrome notifications as a way to deliver them.

“The majority of student situations we have seen so far are a result of using internet services known as proxy servers to try to circumvent our district internet firewalls,” Shreffler said. “When the students visit the site, they click ‘allow’ on a message that asks for permission to use notifications, which allows these sites to send notifications even when the students are no longer on the offending website. Windows then receives the notification from Chrome and displays them as they should.”

The ads are popping up more often because of a recent change in how Google Chrome pushes out notifications, Shreffler said. The change came in July, when Google Chrome began gradually releasing an update that enabled Windows Action Center notifications.

“The thing to remember is that the people who make these sites make money off ads being viewed, so they are incentivized by getting around our security. So when we block one site, another one can often pop-up,” he said.

Shreffler advised parents to monitor their child’s laptop use by checking the browser history and reminding their child that using a proxy service, such as Proxy Croxy, to bypass the district’s network security is a policy violation.

“Trying to bypass district internet security is a violation of the Acceptable Technology Use Policy, which all students sign when they receive their device, as well as a violation of the Student Code of Conduct, which all students sign as well,” he said. “Violations are handled per the policies and procedures outlined in the Student Code of Conduct.”

Independence Elementary PTO installs new playground shade GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR

Ever tried grabbing a vehicle’s steering wheel after it’s been left in Florida’s summer weather? If so, you might understand just how hot a playground’s equipment can become for children.

Because Orange County Public Schools does not include funding for playground shade structures in the schools it builds, it is often left up to parents to identify ways to acquire money to purchase and install shade for their children.

And the Parent-Teacher Organization at Independence Elementary School, located at 6255 New Independence Parkway in Winter Garden, did exactly that when confronted with Florida’s high heat and the school playground’s lack of shade.

“Sun exposure is a big deal, and with the UV index at, or over, 10 so many days of the year and the hot temperatures, the kids just get overheated,” said PTO President Danielle Taliaferro. “And there was also no place out there for teachers who are monitoring recess and standing out there in the sun. So we had looked at a couple of options to get some shade out there, whether through landscaping or a shade structure

like the one we did, and it just seemed like the structure was the best option.”

The school’s PTO was able to raise enough money during a funrun event held in October 2017 and installed a shade for the playground Aug. 30 at a cost of $17,000.

“In our community, we have a lot of families moving here from other states, and (because) we don’t have an indoor gymnasium, everything takes place outside,” Taliaferro said. “So parents are kind of struck by that, and we had a lot of parents willing to put in the effort to fundraise and make this happen.”

During their fundraising efforts, the PTO raised a little more than $42,000, Taliaferro said. The remaining money will be allocated toward other future projects the PTO has in mind.

“Our school is over capacity — it’s built for ... 780 students, and we’re at 1,300 students right now,” she said. “So what we’re focusing on this year are ways to combat the sheer number of students. We looked at recess options, and now that we have the shade, it’s great, but we have too many kids and too many classrooms, so not all the kids can actually use the recess equipment. So we’re trying to find ways to supplement play space.”

One of their future projects is a covered picnic area/outdoor classroom space that would cost about $13,000, Taliaferro said.

“Our cafeteria here is cramped, so parents can’t really eat lunch with their kids inside,” she said.

School district adopts $4.7 billion budget GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR

During the Sept. 11 Orange County School Board meeting, School Board members approved the district’s 2018-19 budget, which totals $4.7 billion.

OCPS Chief Financial Officer Dale Kelly said the district’s funding priorities this year were compensation to employees; increased dollars for safety and mental health; the funding of 4,971 projected additional students; preservation of academic, arts and athletics programs; and the retainment of qualified teachers.

To support the district’s funding needs, School Board officials adopted a 7.29 millage rate, a decrease from last year’s 7.47 rate.

Coupled with the Save Our Homes assessment limitation, which caps increases in the assessed value of a homestead residence, homeowners can expect a lower tax bill, he said.

“With the Save Our Homes limitation on taxes, your overall tax bill will actually go down, because the Save Our Homes limited that increase to 2.1% and our millage rate went down by 2.29%,” Kelly said. “So when you add those property values, on average, with the Save Our Homes cap, you actually have a slight decrease in taxes.”

OCPS FUNDS

The property taxes OCPS receives supports the district’s five funds: the operating budget, the capital budget, debt service, special revenue funds and internal service funds — each of which is used for a different purpose.

The operating budget ($2.15 billion) consists primarily of the funds required to run the dayto-day operations of the school district. This includes teacher salaries, ordinary maintenance of facilities, transportation and administration.

The capital budget ($1.86 billion) is used for the construction and renovation of schools.

The debt service budget ($222.5

million) is used for the payment of principal and interest on borrowed funds.

The special-revenue fund ($169.9 million) is associated with the federal grants, federal stimulus funds and operations of the school food service program.

The internal-service fund ($336.5 million) accounts for the costs associated with health insurance, printing and the Property Casualty Loss Fund. It is considered an internal-service fund because the revenues are derived from the operating and specialrevenue budgets or employee and retiree contributions.

Kelly added that the capital projects fund this year will allocate $55.4 million into the West Learning Community, which includes the West Orange area.

The funds also will pay for an expansion of the district’s digital curriculum ($58.8 million), bus replacements ($26.6 million), renovation projects ($231.4 million), portable moves and leasing ($33.7 million), charter school capital funding ($6.4 million), district-wide painting ($7 million) and installation of sunshades for tot lots in all existing elementary schools and new schools ($4.5 million).

SAFETY AND SECURITY

OCPS is also increasing its schoolhardening measures by using both state and local funds, Kelly said. A state grant is estimated to provide the district with about $7 million for such measures, which will be available in January, he said. And another $6 million is being provided via local funds.

“Another area of emphasis that was determined by the state was the Safe Schools allocation, which increased this year by an additional $6.4 million, and we’re utilizing those funds, along with some other district funds, to add another 104 school resource officers districtwide to bring our total to 222 officers,” he said.

The state and district also is investing in mental health, Kelly said.

Sheriff’s Office becomes member agency of Project Lifesaver International The program offers life-saving technology that aids in finding certain missing persons in under an hour.

Orange County residents and visitors now have access to a lifesaving program that aids individuals prone to wandering off and getting lost.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office recently became a member agency of Project Lifesaver International, which provides life-saving technology to individuals who are prone to wandering off, such as individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or autism, Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said in a press conference Sept. 10.

“It is designed to protect the at-risk populations in our communities,” Demings said of Project Lifesaver. “Clients wear a small transmitter on their wrists or ankle that emits an individualized radio frequency. Members of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office — who will be specifically trained in search efforts — can then respond using the client’s individualized frequency (if a client wanders off).”

The program utilizes a radiofrequency device — and in some cases, a drone — to search for individuals who go missing. A key benefit of the program is it helps locate enrolled missing persons quickly. Additionally, because Project Lifesaver is an international organization, the program also benefits the tourists who visit Orange County if they enrolled in the program elsewhere, Demings said.

Demings said he had been working with District 13 State Sen. Linda Stewart since last November to secure funding for the program. Stewart submitted a request in the amount of $75,000 for the program during the last senate session.

“This particular project is important to me, because I know the statistics of individuals who

become lost on foot, and how this project can help save countless lives within the community,” Stewart said. “I am excited that we were able to receive the appropriation of $75,000 to help the Orange County Sheriff’s Office partner with Project Lifesaver International so that they may continue saving lives and making the community a safe place for all residents.”

Laura Lang, a senior advocate and senior crime prevention programs coordinator for the Sheriff’s Office, said the program will offer peace of mind.

“By having the small transmitter bracelet on the wrist or ankle, I would know there is a system in place to find them should they wander off,” Lang said. “It is also a great tool for the OCSO, because we get visitors from across the county and around the world, and if a tourist wanders away and they are part of Project Lifesaver, we can use our program to locate them, as well.”

Project Lifesaver International CEO Gene Saunders founded the nonprofit in 1999 while he served as a captain in the Chesapeake Police Department. At the time, he was in charge of finding missing persons. He got the idea for Project Lifesaver while browsing brochures pertaining to tracking wildlife.

There are 1,600 participating member agencies across 50 states in the United States and seven provinces in Canada. To date, the Project Lifesaver program has assisted in more than 3,400 successful rescues.

He was an acknowledged expert in the area of eyetracked and head-tracked visual displays. He was a consultant to Army, Navy and Air Force organizations and made numerous presentations at national conferences. In 1982, his work resulted in a patent for the Department of the Navy for his invention Servo Control System for the Positioning of an Apparatus.

Of all his achievements, his greatest was the love that he gave to his family. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and son. He exemplified what a good man is. He demonstrated love, trust, patience and gentleness.

Blair is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Juanita Skipper Browder, who passed away May 14, 2014. Juanita was his caregiver for 21 years despite battling cancer herself.

GEORGE “BLAIR” BROWDER DIED SUNDAY, SEPT. 16, 2018.

George “Blair” Browder, 89, passed away Sunday evening, Sept. 16, at NC State Veterans Home in Black Mountain.

Blair was born in Winter Garden, Florida, on May 25, 1929, to the late Cledis and Sarah Russell Browder.

Blair served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1952 as an aviation electronics technician. He was the navigator and radar observer on Martin PBM Mariners patrol planes during the Korean War. After his service, he graduated from Rollins College with a bachelor’s degree and obtained a position in the growing space industry in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Blair then went to work for Martin Marietta in Orlando and was an electrical engineer there for 20 years. In 1971, he received his master’s degree in engineering from University of Florida.

Rose M. Green, age 90, resident of Winter Garden, died peacefully on Saturday morning, Sept. 22, 2018, with her family by her side.

Rose was born in Corning, New York, on Jan. 3, 1928, the daughter of Thomas and Angeline Giardina. In 1948, she was crowned the Crystal City Queen of Corning, New York, celebrating the Corning Centennial anniversary.

She married Fred W. Green on Jan. 27, 1951. Later in life, they moved to Florida, where they called home.

She was an avid Christian who loved the Lord. She was the eldest of 12 children and the mother of three.

After moving to Ocoee, Florida, in 1942, Richard began working for Inanan Bros. Construction company and, later, Williams Company, where he built commercial and government buildings. Richard was active in local government for a time, running for city commissioner in 1957 and again in 1972.

A funeral is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 29, at Collison Carey Hand Funeral Home in Winter Garden, with a reception to follow.

Pastor Jeremy Culpeper will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Richard’s life.

Olympia High has named Roger Williams its new girls soccer coach. Williams previously has coached at the collegiate and high-school levels and played collegiately and professionally in the USL Pro league for the Myrtle Beach Seadawgs.

Navigating a season in which it has a new coach and several underclassman athletes in new roles, the Olympia volleyball team has been working to find a rhythm in the midst of some early losses.

Earlier this month, the Titans went through a stretch spanning three days Sept. 13 to 15 during which they lost four out of six matches. Five of those losses occurred while competing in the Winter Park High School Showcase.

Olympia bounced back last week with two important wins.

First, the Titans swept nearby Windermere High Sept. 18: 25-19, 26-24, 25-19. Two days later, they had little trouble dispatching Cypress Creek in a district matchup: 25-21, 25-11, 25-16.

The win against the Wolverines — during which an enthusiastic student section looked on as senior outside hitter Mya Wilson registered a team-high 15 kills — was particularly encouraging for first-year coach Julianne Calcote.

“It definitely was a good win for us,” Calcote said. “We had a goal that we worked on — really trying to serve more aggressively to get teams out of system — and I thought we did that really well tonight.”

The win, which elevated the Titans’ record to 7-7, was just the third loss of the season for

he first win for the Windermere High varsity football program was absent a lastsecond comeback or some other dramatic finish.

It ended, as thousands of games around Florida — and beyond — do each Friday night, with one team in victory formation to run out the clock.

Perhaps that was the best part.

No, the Wolverines’ 35-20 win over St. Cloud Sept. 21 did not involve any frantic twists and turns that could be misinterpreted as the team lucking its way into its first win. Instead, Windermere led at halftime and grew that lead during a second half. In this game,

Windermere was a better football team than its opponent.

The Wolverines’ opponent may not have been good — the Bulldogs fell to 0-4 on the season — but it is a credit to the athletes and Fred Priest’s coaching staff that the program’s first win came in a fashion that was as convincing as it was exciting.

Especially when there was no guarantee the milestone win had to come at all this fall.

“That first win was always going to be the hardest one, and there’s no guarantees,” Priest said afterward, still drying off from the SEE WINDERMERE PAGE 16

Brian Vargo The Olympia High boys bowling team picked up a big win Sept. 14 against rival Windermere, 2,498-2,294. Junior Brian Vargo led the way with a team-best 190-game for the Titans. Vargo, who is a captain for the team, averages a 178 on the season.

How did you begin bowling?

I’ve been bowling for three years now. My parents just brought up the subject of, “You should try out for the bowling team to help you get a varsity letter,” and I said, “Sure, I’ll try it.” And it’s a blast.

What made you like the sport?

What turned me around was just the atmosphere of the people — the team is tight, and it’s just a blast. We all crack jokes at each other, and it’s a nice, fun atmosphere for everyone.

Has your coach, Jen Johnson, helped you improve?

She gives me tips all the time, and then my dad, Joseph Vargo, was a bowler when he was in high school and college.

What’s been your favorite memory with the team?

Probably going to districts, just because the atmosphere is fun. We all talk, and we all get excited for it. It’s just an allaround good time to be around the other teams.

What are your goals for this season?

For my individual goals, I would love to have an average over 200, because that always is good. And then I just want to grow and make sure I can help out others. For the team, the goal is to make it to state.

What’s the most memorable spare you’ve ever picked up?

A 6-10-7 split — that was during practice this year.

Probably Christmas, because we get to spend time together as a family. My brother is in college and my mom works a lot, so that’s one of the times we all get together and have fun as a family.

“The kids practiced really hard this week — we corrected a lot of mistakes that we’ve been making,” Priest said. “I had a good feeling about it if we could just carry it over into the game.”

Windermere is now 1-3 and has six games left on its schedule this fall. That’s six more opportunities to add to the win total and to rack up more firsts for this team — the program’s first winning streak, for example.

For a coaching staff that has been preaching process and calls its athletes “Foundation Builders,” the positive affirmation of a win could open new possibilities for a team that has a handful of competitive games remaining.

“It’s something we have to build off of,” Priest said. “Now, they’ve seen something pay off, and you can already see the buyin — they needed to see the fruits of it at some point.”

The way that Win No. 1 for the Windermere Wolverines ended was unremarkable — but the postgame celebration was not. “Act like you’ve been there before” is a popular sports cliche, but these Wolverines famously had not been there before — that was the entire point.

So, although there is a lot of work still to be done for this program, the sight of Priest getting a Gatorade bath or players mobbing one another in a postgame celebration as the band played and cheerleaders danced nearby was a fun confirmation that this program is winless no more.

“It was crazy — it was great,” Jackson said. “Everybody supporting us, lifting us up and everything — it was really nice.”

First Academy sprints out to fast start, big win over Calvary Christian

he First Academy Royals jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they went on to beat the Calvary Christian Warriors 49-28.

“We just installed some things that they hadn’t seen,” The First Academy coach Leroy Kinard said, reflecting on the Royals’ fast start. “We put in a couple wrinkles and they didn’t have time to adjust to it. By the time they adjusted to it, we had put up 21 points.”

Rolous Frazier had two rushing touchdowns and a 94-yard kick return for a touchdown — which came after the Warriors had scored on their opening drive of the second half to trim the Royals’ lead to 28-14.

“Rolous (Frazier) is a college football player,” Kinard said. “He might be the best running back in Central Florida. … That kid is outstanding — great character kid — works hard, captain, does everything you want him to do.”

Matt Edwards threw three touchdowns for the Royals—all of which went to Lake Ellis.

Defensively, Jordan Pierre had an interception that set up The First Academy’s second touchdown of the game and recovered a fumble which he ran back for a touchdown in the third quarter.

PANTHERS SHUT OUT IN DAYTONA BEACH

The Dr. Phillips football team’s rough start to the season continued Sept. 21 as the Panthers (1-4) were shut for just the

second time in the last 12 years, falling 22-0 to the Mainland High Buccaneers.

Offensive woes were again an issue for Dr. Phillips. The unit turned the ball over four times and amassed just 175 total yards. The Panthers had the ball within Mainland’s 30-yard-line on four occasions but were unable to come away with points.

A bright spot for Dr. Phillips on defense, Jaquarri Powell had 15 tackles, a blocked punt, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

FOUNDATION RALLIES TO REMAIN UNDEFEATED

The Foundation Academy Lions overcame a halftime deficit in Deltona Sept. 21, rallying to defeat the host Trinity Christian Eagles 20-10 after trailing 10-7.

The come-from-behind victory kept the Lions undefeated — they are now 5-0 — and handed Trinity Christian (4-1) its first loss.
