A National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey found that obese women had nearly four

times the risk of knee osteoarthritis than non-obese women.

For men, it was five times the risk.

Runners are much more likely to be at a normal weight than members of the sedentary population, significantly decreasing their risk of osteoarthritis.

Running also bolsters your cartilage by increasing oxygen flow and flushing out toxins and by strengthening the ligaments around your joints. Hitting the trail also gives your bones a boost, helping to prevent osteoporosis.

2. SCREEN. At about age 30, everyone should start having annual screenings for kidney disease. Anyone with a family history of kidney disease or the “Big Four” should start around age 18 and continue to be tested every six months.

3. HYDRATE. As a rule of thumb, Awosika recommends one ounce of water per kilogram of body weight per day.

4. ADJUST. As filters of the body, kidneys depend on a healthy diet to work properly.

Fruits and vegetables are key, and meat should be consumed in moderation, Awoka says.

5. EXERCISE. Awosika recommends 45 minutes of exercise, six days a week. Anyone over age 40 should particularly try to adhere to this regimen to counteract the body’s natural tendency to decay.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are dilated veins that may turn blue, red or flesh tone. They are usually raised above the skin of the leg and have the appearance of knot-like cords.

• One scoop from the “trail mix” container. A quick mix of nuts, seeds, dried fruit and coconut flakes into an airtight container and done. Throw a halfcup scoop in there for them to measure their own.

• Fruit-on-the-bottom yogurt cups. Just plunk a few frozen fruit pieces into the bottom of a cup, whole yogurt over top, pop the lid on, and it thaws in the fridge to make the fruit on the bottom.

Of course, the kids can make their own with fresh fruit from the fridge, too.

• Ants on a log. Just celery sticks with natural peanut butter (or sun butter) and raisins up top for the ants.

• Hard-boiled egg from the refrigerator and a piece of fruit.

BRAIN FOOD When children come home from school, they usually head straight for the kitchen to grab a snack. If the fridge and pantry are stocked with junk foods, that’s what they will eat.

• Fruit and cheese. There are some pretty great non-sharp cheese cutters that just have a wire across that are safe for even kindergartners. You can teach them how much to cut, and they can pick a piece of fruit to go with it.

• Guacamole and tortilla chips. If you have a taco night every week, make a little extra guac to save for snack time.

• Cheese and crackers.

Show them how to cut the cheese (stay away from preshredded or pre-sliced cheese — take a peek at the ingredients on those) and how many crackers they can have.
