homes at risk, and those people are a nervous wreck because it’s right at their back door. So it’s quite a few homes near lakes in Gotha. If you drive around, you’ll see all these lakes with the water that has gone up very high.”

Although most lakes drain out to another lake or body of water, those that don’t become more vulnerable during periods of heavy rain, Negron said. Surveyors went out Sept. 5 and took readings that showed Lake Nally was about two to three feet from reaching a home, he said.

“A lot of lakes are higher than normal, but perhaps they’re not close enough to a home, so people don’t get too worried about it,” Negron said. “But that whole area, and essentially countywide, we have some really high stages. South of Morton Jones Road there were two wetlands that were threatening two homes, and that’s where some pumps were set up. We haven’t done anything for Lake Nally to my knowledge, but I believe it’s considered a private lake.”

And when it comes to longterm solutions, the county has limited options, Negron added.

“We’re kind of limited as to what we can do out there,” Negron said. “You can set up a pump station, but that’s extremely expensive. It can be millions of dollars. And landlocked lakes are tricky — even if you pump the water from point A to point B, you don’t want to just move the problem to someone else.”

t has been 17 years since the 9/11 attacks, and the community and Dr. Phillips High students and staff gathered Tuesday morning to reflect and remember.

DPHS’ Air Force Junior ROTC stood at attention as the flag was raised and the band played the national anthem. Lt. Col. Rick Proctor opened the ceremony by introducing keynote speaker Eliu Muñiz, who was a New York Police officer on Sept. 11, 2001. Orange County sheriff’s deputies, Orlando police officers, Orlando Fire Department firefighters and members of the American Legion Post 286 in Pinecastle also were in attendance.

Water levels in several Gothaarea lakes and wetlands have risen dangerously high because of recent rainfall.

Some homeowners located near the lakes have watched with growing dread as the elevated lakes threaten to reach and flood their houses.

Rita Schoeffler, a seven-year Gotha resident who resides near Lake Nally, has monitored the progress of the lake and fears for her neighbor who is situated closest to the body of water that has now overtaken the neighbor’s dock and lies only a few feet from the property.

“It started happening a couple weeks ago,” Schoeffler said.

“So much rain has been coming, and we’re at the bottom. And so all the lakes are filled way above normal, and they all drain down to here, but Lake Nally doesn’t drain into anywhere.

So the water is coming down from everywhere — even from a neighborhood that’s above us — it was coming in between the houses like a river. It was unbelievable.”

Because of the elevated water levels and reduced oxygen levels, the fish in the lake have also been dying, Schoeffler said.

During the Labor Day weekend, Orange County government officials visited the area to assess the situation, hand out sandbags to affected residents and relocate some of the water that had collected in the wetlands south of Lake Nally to Lake Olivia and Steer Lake, said Daniel Negron, chief engineer of the county’s Stormwater Management Division.

“There’s no outfall for the water there, so once it fills up, there’s nowhere else for it to go,” Negron said. “And looking at our rainfall information countywide, we are, currently, an average of 9.5 inches above normal. For example, (from January) up to Aug. 31, the normal rainfall would be around 36.6 inches, but we’ve received 46.2 (inches). So it’s been an extremely wet year.”

Schoeffler said she’s noticed Lake Nally is not the only lake in Gotha with elevated water levels.

“There are several homes at risk around all these little lakes — it isn’t just us,” Schoeffler said. “On Gotha Road, by the turnpike, there are some other

Any delay caused by a 30/30 at a high school can lead to a domino effect and impact buses that need to travel to elementary schools, and a dismissal delay at an elementary or high school can impact middle schools, which are dismissed last.

According to Bill Wen, senior director of the district’s transportation services, OCPS currently has 888 bus routes, about 135 of which are in the West Orange area. Most buses are assigned three schools per route, and most routes average 15 minutes, he said.

Bridgewater Middle is serviced by 34 buses, all of which make a total of 150 stops.

“Of the 34 buses that service Bridgewater: 31 service Windermere High, three service West Orange High, three service Keene’s Crossing Elementary, seven service Independence Elementary, five service Bay Lake Elementary, and one bus for Windermere Elementary,” Wen said.

or parents of school-age children in Orange County, few things prompt instant anxiety quite like a thunderstorm rolling into the area near dismissal time.

They know — especially with the particularly storm-heavy start to this school year — those rumbles mean one thing: The 30/30.

The 30/30 is an Orange County Public Schools policy that aims to keep children safe during lightning storms. During a 30/30 lockdown, dismissal is delayed for at least 30 minutes. The lockdown affects everyone — bus riders, car riders, bikers and walkers — and can turn an already-stressful task into a downright debacle.

What’s more, because school buses run routes for all school levels (elementary, middle and high), a 30/30 lockdown at a school level that has earlier dismissal times can disrupt the timing for the remaining routes — even if the storm has passed. Such has been the case in recent weeks at Bridgewater Middle School. In Orange County, middle schools have the latest dismissal time at 3:57 p.m., and Bridgewater parents said recent 30/30 lockdowns at the elementary level have caused significant delays for their children.

“The other day our daughter got home at about 5:30 or 5:40 p.m., and then she had to go straight to tumbling (class), so she had to miss dinner,” said Chad Kalter, a Bridgewater parent. “And they say, ‘Well, you can come pick your child up.’ But you really can’t, because to go pick your child up, you have to go wait in a line that wraps around the school for at least a quarter-mile. So it’s nearly impossible to pick up your kids from that school.”

Kalter said the rule is nonsensical — particularly if its purpose is to ensure student safety. Because of busing policies, Kalter’s daughter walks two-fifths of a mile to the nearest bus stop because his family resides 1.8 miles from Bridgewater. Only students who reside more than two miles from school are eligible for free busing.

“The 30/30 rule really doesn’t make any sense,” he said. “I assume it’s for safety reasons. I understand that, and yet the kids are allowed to walk two miles to school. It seems a bit contradictory to me. It’s a pretty dumb rule. ... The percentage of kids that get struck by lightning has to be less than 1%, but how many kids get hit by cars, and yet we’re making the kids walk two miles to school.

Another Bridgewater parent, Tamara Hass, echoed Kalter’s sentiments.

“My son didn’t get home last week until almost 6 p.m.,” Hass said. “When one school goes on a 30/30, even though the schools that do dismissals later aren’t on a 30/30, it pushes all the buses back. So they don’t get home until hours after their designated normal time.

“I realize they’re looking out for the safety of our children, but I think it needs to be revamped,” she said. “And my personal concern is (the district) is worried about them getting home in a storm. But then, if there’s a storm on the way to school, there’s no 30/30 rule in place for that. So it’s OK if the buses pick them up during a storm in the morning, and yet not bring them home.”

Shari Bobinski, an OCPS media representative who also has children attending Bridgewater, said the dismissal problems at Bridgewater are exacerbated by overcrowding. Bridgewater currently has 2,611 students enrolled and a program capacity of 1,040 students.

“They’re over capacity, and they’re going to get relief next year,” she said. “But for now, we have to just deal with the long lines, unfortunately. The school is doing the best that they can to move people through and make the process as painless as possible, but there are a lot of kids there.”

She also urged parents to be patient. Storms are most frequent during the three months of August, September and October, and Bridgewater’s relief school is scheduled to open next year. “(The policy) is 100% for the safety of students and staff,”

OFFICIAL RULE Under the district’s 30/30 rule, if thunder is heard within 30 seconds of a visible lightning strike, students are not dismissed until 30 minutes have passed. However, if thunder is heard again during that timeframe, the clock resets, and another 30 minutes must pass before the school can begin dismissal.

Orange County Public Schools adopted this policy more than 10 years ago following safety concerns from parents. Similar policies also have been adopted by the school districts in Lake and Seminole counties.

“I can’t remember the school, but there were some concerns because inclement weather would move in very quickly while students were being dismissed,” Bobinski said. “And at that time, we even had an outpouring of parents who were concerned OCPS was just releasing children out into bad weather.”

The district does not track how many 30/30 lockdowns have gone into effect.

Bobinski said. “We know it’s not easy to sit in long lines, but it’s truly for the safety of everyone. …

Unfortunately, the West Orange area is so popular, and it grew so quickly. This is just another one of those situations where we’ve got to just get through the growing pains. But next year, it should be a lot better.”

DISMAL DISMISSALS During a 30/30 lockdown, parents are allowed to come to the school and pick up their children. However, because of the overcrowding at many West Orange schools, this solution also has its drawbacks.

If parents come in to pick up or sign out their child from the school during a 30/30 lockdown,

more often than not, they can expect to wait in long lines.

At Bridgewater, those lines begin well before a parent can even reach the campus, said parent Tamara Hass.

“The line comes out of the school and goes down the road, and that’s why I don’t attempt to

even do it,” Hass said. “It’s so long that you’re stuck there forever. I have parents in my neighborhood who have gone to the school to wait in line, and it takes just as long as it would if (their child) had just taken the bus home. The lines are just so long, especially at Bridgewater.”

going to ride their skateboards, and Best Buddies is usually there. … Last year, we didn’t have any floats, because it was kind of last minute. A lot of people came from West Orange, and they always had a parade, so we were like, ‘Let’s see what we can do.’ The Summerport neighborhood was nice enough to host us. We’re hoping for some floats this year, more next year, and maybe in 20 years, it’ll be a (bigger) thing.”

Parents, students, Principal Doug Guthrie and SGA sponsor Ashley Hoffman all have been instrumental in helping start what Huehne hopes becomes a tradition for years to come. She added children in the Summerport community last year came outside and lined the sidewalk to watch the parade as students tossed candy.

As with any new event, it takes some time to grow, Huehne said.

However, she hopes participation in the parade grows each year and provides something to bring the school and the community together.

“The sooner you can start some new traditions, the more fun it’ll be for the classes that come in the future,” she said. “Especially for the seniors this year; if they come back in five years, it’d be nice if the parade is there, too.”

mere High fall parade and foodtruck night starts at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13. The route begins at Keene’s Crossing Elementary and winds through Summerport Village. Students will march down Bridgewater Crossings Boulevard to the end celebration point on the lakefront near 33&Melt.

Parking will be available behind the Lakefront Shoppes buildings and all along Bridgewater Crossings Boulevard, toward Lake Smith Circle and the Publix shopping center. Parade-goers will have prime viewing along Bridgewater Crossings Boulevard at The Village Green and toward Keene’s Crossing Elementary.

Last year, the school received positive feedback and residents enjoyed being able to walk outside and watch the parade, said parent Emily Huehne.

“A lot of residents came out and we had some really good feedback,” she said. “I had the head of the neighborhood association over there call me, and he was really happy with it and asking if we could do it again, so it was a really good experience.”

This year, the Student Government Association has invited all the clubs to create floats and march in the parade. The WHS Wolverine Legacy Fund will award $300 as a prize for the best float.

“This is the second year, so every year, we’re trying to get a little bigger and better,” she said.

“I know the cheerleaders will be there, the band will be there, and a lot of the clubs will be there. I heard the skateboarding club is

er Betsy VanderLey said. “So, we’ll immediately alleviate the pressure and get a fire station for these folks and then get more permanent locations as we go on.”

VanderLey said the target date to open the temporary fire station is Oct. 1.

Orange County Fire Chief Otto Drozd discussed the fire stations planned for Horizon West in an email sent to VanderLey Sept. 5.

Stations planned for the area are temporary station 44 and permanent stations 48 and 49.

“Temporary Station 44 will be located on the site of Orlando Health’s new, stand-alone emergency room off of Porter Road and Avalon (Road),” Drozd wrote.

He later wrote: “Horizon West is slated for two additional stations — station 48 and 49. Both (are) planned for 2025 or beyond.”

Drozd also said because of the rapid growth of Horizon West, he expects the timelines for stations 48 and 49 could “be moved up well in advance of what has been planned.” In addition to temporary station 44 and stations 48 and 49, an existing temporary station will become permanent station.

“Station 32 — which has been in a temporary location for several years — will become a permanent station,” Drozd wrote. “We will be utilizing the new prototype fire station design and the new location will be north of the current location on Hartzog Road. This (station) will cover the south side of Horizon West. Construction is estimated to begin December/ January of 2018-2019.”

The need for more fire stations in Horizon West was brought to VanderLey’s attention during a town hall meeting last year.

Horizon West residents made her aware they were having a difficult time getting homeowners insurance because of the proximity of fire stations.

“I immediately initiated a conversation with our fire chief to find out … what the current situation (at the time) was and how quickly we can move to rectify them,” VanderLey said, adding that money for new fire stations had already been budgeted. “The issue was manning the fire station — so the personnel cost — that was not accounted for anywhere.”

VanderLey added the personnel issues were handled by moving personnel from an existing fire station that received few calls and moving those individuals to man temporary station 44.

The impact of the new fire stations will be quicker response times and lower rates for homeowners insurance, even though the first new station expected to go up soon is only temporary, VanderLey said. She added the temporary station will be similar to a “housing trailer.”

“For the purposes of the residents in that area, it will not matter to them — in terms of their homeowners insurance and in terms of our performance and response times — whether (fire services) are coming to them (residents) out of a house trailer or coming to them out of a bricks-and-sticks fire station,” VanderLey said. “They’re going to see the same level of service, and it wouldn’t matter to

the insurance company. I would encourage the residents, as soon as this fire station is in place, to call your homeowners insurance and see if you can get a better rate now that you have fire services a whole lot closer to your property. And they should see a huge decrease in their homeowners insurance … as a result of this fire station.”

Orange County Fire Rescue Public Information Officer Carrie Proudfit said the average response time for fire/rescue service — from the time the call is received to the on-scene time — in Orange County during Fiscal Year 2017-2018 was 7 minutes, 19 seconds.

“The Lake Hickory Nut area was a particular community in Horizon West that was evaluated after a constituent concern,” Proudfit said. “The response time in that area was measured at an average of 12 (minutes) 55 (seconds).

Depending on whether it was an EMS (Emergency Medical Service) or fire call, the benchmark for that area should be nine minutes or nine (minutes) 20 (seconds) … which is set/determined by the population density of the particular community.”

Proudfit added the county will be hiring personnel once the permanent stations are built, and the projected cost for the addition personnel is $2.6 million annually.

“The costs associated with standing up temporary Fire Station 44 includes costs associated with the manufactured temporary fire station — $100,000,” Proudfit said. “In addition, the build-out cost associated with standing up this station is approximately $300,000.”

Black Tie begins year two

’ll admit: When spring melted into summer, and the Black Tie world went dormant for a couple of months, I didn’t quite know what to do with my weekends.

I had grown accustomed to taking a couple of weekdays and turning them into my own version of a weekend. I know that come September, Fridays and Saturdays are for rifling through dresses in my closet, charging up my camera and picking a lipstick color — which, of course, is the hardest part.

That said, summer is behind us, and it’s time to dig into your own closets, finalize your social calendar and gear up for a host of fall philanthropies and grand galas.

We launched our Black Tie section one year ago, and it’s been a lot of things — exciting, busy and a bit chaotic — but also quite rewarding. There have been late nights and hectic nights, going to three events in the span of a few hours and promptly editing and uploading photos. We’ve had our share of camera malfunctions, blue-ink pens exploding on our hands, blisters from new, high-heeled sandals — Black Tie reporter Harry Sayer is exempt from that one — getting stuck in traffic jams and even getting event dates mixed up.

With any new territory comes some uncertainty, and this time last year, we were bracing for the unknown. How would our communities react to this type of coverage? How would people in the Central Florida social scene view us and our efforts to deliver comprehensive, interesting and fun coverage of the events they hold dear to their hearts?

But, to our delight, the social scene has embraced us just as they do the organizations and philanthropies they care so much about. Members of our SEE DANIELLE PAGE 9

Golfers: Get ready for tee time.

Bridgewater Middle School is hosting its inaugural golf tournament Saturday, Sept. 15, at West Orange Country Club, in Winter Garden.

Bridgewater Athletic Director Aaron Bentley came up with the idea for the tournament while playing a round of golf with his dad and said he hopes the fundraiser will become an annual event.

“This is my second year as athletic director here, and I wanted to get something started at the school that will benefit them in the long run,” Bentley said.

The tournament is open to all golfers. Parents, teachers, school staff, other coaches from Orange County and even Bridgewater’s principal will be competing.

“It’s going to benefit the athletic department for Bridgewater Middle School,” Bentley said. “(The money) is going to be used to buy new uniforms for the basketball and track teams, new equipment … and then some things just for luxury for them to have, like a tent (for) track meets. We don’t currently have one for Bridgewater, so this would help keep them shaded during the meets.

“I’m looking to get new basketballs for the team,” he said. “For track, we need to get some things to help them work on their power and their speed, so I want to get stuff along those lines.”

Golfers also will have a chance to participate in a raffle and in a silent auction. Raffle items include $50 in “Uno’s Cash” to use at Uno’s Pizza, a gift basket from WaWa, dinner for two at 4 Rivers and free

The tournament is just one initiative Bentley has worked on to help raise money for the school’s athletes. He has another fundraising event planned for the spring.

“The first thing on my list of big fundraisers is this (golf tournament), and then I’m hoping to do — in the spring — a 5K,” Bentley said. “We (have) a lot of students here, and a lot of support is needed, especially for athletics.”

membership of the Shawnee Inn’s amenities. While he was the store manager, he also was the Assistant Postmaster in the attached post office and the Commissioner of Weights and Measures in his county and a volunteer firefighter in Shawnee.

He never seemed to tire or complain about providing for his family or contributing to his community.

When the store was sold in 1975, Wes moved the family back to Florida, where he worked for his sister and brother-in-law (Elaine and “Cooter” Creech) in their wholesale plant greenhouse business. A year later, he was offered a promising position by his sister-in-law’s new husband (Laurel and Dennis St Germain).

He accepted the position of Sales Manager for I&I Sling Co. and moved the family to Wilmington, Delaware. He enjoyed the travel and friendships made in this position until his retirement in 2005.

Soon after, he sold his property in Landenberg, Pennsylvania, and bought a log home in Telford, Tennessee.

Millard “Wes” married Joan Melva Langille in 1958 in Glenolden, Pennsylvania while serving in the Air Force and stationed in Dover, Delaware.

They were happily married for 53 years. They were long-

MILLARD YVON “WES” HARDY DIED SATURDAY, JULY 7, 2018.

Millard “Wes” Yvon Hardy passed away on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at the age of 83, in northeast Tennessee. Born in Arab, Alabama, to Elbert and Ada (Fleming) Hardy on March 31, 1935, he was the eighth of nine children.

Millard “Wes” was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Ada Hardy; his brothers, Fonda Hardy, Alvis Dalton Hardy and Billy Ray Hardy; and his sister, Etna Howard; his wife, Joan, in 2012; a newborn baby, Brenda Lee; his great-grandson, Brendan Hardy (a newborn); and many friends and relatives.

Wes is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Twyla Gaye Hardy Wallace (Earl E. Wallace), Emlenton Pennsylvania, Lori Yvonne Hill (Charles S. Hill), at home in Telford, Tennessee, Kimberly Renee Hardy, of Church Hill, Tennessee; his sisters, Etha Hall and Elaine Creech of Winter Garden, Florida, and sister, Chloe Thornton, and brother, James (Marcie), of Ocoee, Florida; his grandchildren, Brandon Wesley Hardy (Heather Mahan Hardy), Paige Renee Hardy, Alexis Jordan Hill, Erica Tyler Hill and Sydney Lang Hill; and his great-grandson, Jordan Hardy

(adopted child of Brandon and Heather Hardy). Wes leaves behind a large number relatives and friends who loved him throughout his long life.

Millard moved to Ocoee, Florida, as a child. He left school at the age of 17. Soon after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he was given the nickname “Wes.” After honorably serving, he returned to Ocoee with his new wife and first baby girl.

He later went on to complete his high school diploma and attended college classes while working for Martin Marietta.

In 1968, he moved with his family to the Pocono Mountains and lived in Shawneeon-the-Delaware, Pennsylvania. He worked construction jobs and equipment sales until he secured a job as manager of an old-fashioned little general store in Shawnee. It was an idyllic life, with his family home adjacent to the store, where he could be a constant figure in his children’s lives.

After moving to Tennessee, they became members of New Salem Baptist Church, in Limestone, Tennessee. Wes was a member of the Lions Club.

He enjoyed board games, playing cards, fishing, wood crafts, gardening and an occasional golf game. He was always active and liked to learn new things about the world. He was an avid reader of National Geographic and the daily newspaper, always keeping his mind and body busy.

He was a loving caregiver to his wife during her illnesses.

A Remembrance and Celebration will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, 2018, in the fellowship hall of Starke Lake Baptist Church, 611 West Ave., Ocoee, FL 34761. The family will be greeting friends and relatives.

A private burial will follow at a later date, where he will join his wife, Joan, at New Salem Baptist Church cemetery in Limestone, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to New Salem Baptist Church, 421 Lester Snapp Road, Limestone, TN 37681.

Christopher George Materson, 67, of Clermont, Florida, completed his journey here on earth Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018. After receiving his education, he began his long career in Miami as a private investigator, which led to his employment with the law firm of Morgan & Morgan in January 2002. Windermere Prep alumna Kelly Rowswell, the junior goalkeeper for the Rollins College women’s soccer team, was named Sunshine State Conference Defensive Player of the Week Sept. 10. It is the third weekly honor of her career.

he youngest of seven sisters — the “Golfing Castelluccis,” her father called them — Maria Castellucci has been competitive about golf since she picked up the game at age 2.

One of the most decorated junior golfers in Central Florida history, Castellucci spent her teen years stacking up junior tour wins and All-American recognitions — whether it was from Ping, Golf Magazine or another publication.

She briefly attended Dr. Phillips High, where she is still tied for the girls golf program’s record for lowest round, and finished her career at Oak Ridge High, where she was the No. 1 for the boys golf team.

In 1990, when she was a senior, the American Junior Golf Asso-

ciation recognized her an award given to the player with the lowest stroke-average throughout the year. The winner of the girls award, she was flown to New York, where she met the player who had won the boys award — a promising teenage golfer named Tiger Woods.

Regarded as one of the best — if not the best — junior golfer in the country in 1990, Castellucci went on to play for Florida State University and later on the LPGA Futures’ Tour (now the Symetra Tour) and the LPGA. It’s safe to say Castellucci — the new head coach for the girls golf program at Windermere High — brings valuable experience to the Lady Wolverines.

And through the beginning stretch of the season, at least, she is having a blast leading the team.

“I love it — I wouldn’t trade it for the world,” Castellucci said.

“My girls are great.”

Castellucci comes to Windermere from The Master’s Academy in Oviedo, where she had been hired to coach the girls program.

When the small private school did not have enough girls to field a varsity team, she instead served as an assistant to the boys team.

Eric Bacon, who is the boys coach at Windermere, also worked previously at The Master’s Academy. When the Wolverines were in need of girls coach, he recommended Castellucci.

“When this opportunity came up, to actually be able to coach a competitive girls team, I was excited — I couldn’t wait,” Castellucci said.

Castellucci has taken over a program that, despite being in its second year of existence, already has expectations. The team nearly missed out on making it to state in 2017 and won district and Metro SEE COMPETITIVE PAGE 16

Danny Stutsman, a sophomore for the Foundation Academy football team who is from Windermere, helped make the Lions first game on their new on-campus field a memorable when he caught a gamewinning touchdown pass from teammate Henry Austad with three seconds left in the game Aug. 31. The catch and extra point gave the Lions (3-0) a 20-13 win over Kingdom Prep. On the season so far, Stutsman has 10 receptions for 202 yards and five touchdowns.

Tell us about catching the game-winning touchdown with three seconds left against Kingdom Prep.

I told my coach that the whole time, I was blowing by that cornerback. I knew if Henry (Austad) could get it there, I’d come up with the catch. …

When I was in the air, it was real slow — I knew I had catch it. I caught it, and I couldn’t believe I caught it. It was a crazy experience — good energy.

What was it like to be recognized by the Orlando Touchdown Club?

It was a great experience. To be around people who just love football — it was great.

Which position do you enjoy the most: linebacker or wide receiver?

Definitely linebacker — my No. 1 choice is linebacker. They told me, “We need you on offense,” and I was like, “OK, I’ll help out.” But it’s definitely linebacker all the way.

Your mom, dad and older sister all played or are playing sports in college. What’s it like being in a family with so many competitive athletes?

It’s tough, because my sister just got a national championship ring with Florida State softball. So I feel like I’ve got to win something this year, just so I can say I brought something to the table.

I watch a lot of Netflix. I like “The Office.” Dwight is definitely my favorite character — he’s hilarious.

What’s your go-to meal after practice or a game?

Definitely Panda Express. I order a big bowl of orange chicken by itself.

Castellucci said she is confident she can help her girls with the mental side of golf. After all, she has a doctoral degree in counseling and psychology.

“Not only can I help them develop their games, but I can also help them develop their minds,” she said. “I can help them with nerves and golfcourse management. Things that took me forever to learn, I can pass on to them at an early stage.”

The Wolverines’ new coach is excited but also busy. Castellucci is a full-time program supervisor at Eckerd Connects Project Bridge, a program that helps youth who were in residential juvenile justice programs transition back into their communities. She owns a business, Kiddie Kaddie, helps out with US Kidz Golf in Orlando and does instruction.

It all makes for several spin-

ning plates, but she said her team has been understanding — and helpful.

“Believe me, there are things that fall through the cracks,” Castellucci said. “That’s one of the things I love about this team — the girls help me, as well as the parents. I really have a great group here.”

More than anything else, Castellucci said her goals for the program center around getting her girls to college and competing for Division I and Division II college programs.

Of course, as competitive as she as a junior and collegiate golfer, she wants her girls to win, too.

“I wish I could say I’ve mellowed with age, but I’m still about as competitive as you can be,” Castellucci said with a laugh. “I want them to win — I want them to do well. These girls can do it.”

THE FIRST ACADEMY (2-0) AT TAMPA BAY CHRISTIAN (1-2) Fresh off an impressive win against Orlando Christian Prep, the Royals head west to face the Rams, who are trying to shake off a two-game losing streak. Tampa Bay Christian has struggled on offense, averaging just over 14 points per game so far this fall.

Six of seven touchdowns for the Rams have come through the air, with junior quarterback Justin Dixon connecting with junior receiver Jahki Davis for four of those passing scores. Dixon is also a dual-threat for his team, rushing for an average of 92.7 yards per game.

indermere Prep’s budding rivalry with Saint Stephen’s Episcopal was on display again Friday, Sept. 7 — and the result was a milestone victory for the Lakers.

Senior quarterback Kai Patterson threw for two scores and ran for another in Windermere Prep’s first game at Deputy Scott Pine Community Park, while seniors Mason Russell and Khadry Jackson were among several defensive standouts in the Lakers’ 35-21 victory.

Saint Stephen’s, the reigning two-time Sunshine State Athletic Conference champion, had its 23-game win streak snapped; the team had not lost since the opening week of the 2016 season.

One of those victories was a 49-21 decision over Windermere Prep in the SSAC’s 2017 Florida Bowl championship game, adding to the motivation for the Lakers to earn a victory.

“It was 296 days ago we played them (the Falcons) last, and that’s something we’ve had circled for a long time,” Windermere Prep head coach Jacob Doss said.

The road to the 2018 Florida Bowl may well continue to run through Windermere Prep (3-0) and Saint Stephen’s (1-1). The Falcons were crowned SSAC champions in each of the last two seasons after finishing runners-up in 2015, while the Lakers defeated Orlando Christian Prep in the 2014 championship final.

FOUNDATION PLAYS, WINS FOR TEAMMATE

The Foundation Academy football team took its home field Sept. 7 with heavy hearts, with the Lions aware that one of their own was fighting for his life.

Bailey Trinder, a junior lineman for Foundation, had been in a serious automobile accident the day before, and many members of the team had spent time at the hospital. As of press time Tuesday, Trinder was still in serious condition.

Despite their sadness and concern, the Lions decided to play as a way to honor their teammate, and Foundation Academy scored a decisive 30-0 victory over visiting Bradenton Christian (0-2).

Henry Austad passed for 123 yards and three touchdowns— two of which landed in the hands of Danny Stutsman — and a stout defense led by Warren Sapp II, Andrew Johns and Michael LemieuxBott kept the Panthers off the scoreboard.

With the win, the Lions improved to 3-0 on the season.

It is the first time the program has started with three-consecutive wins since 2009.

WEST ORANGE HIGH RECLAIMS ORANGE CRATE

For the second time in eight days, the West Orange Warriors found themselves in a game in which a furious comeback attempt was taking place.

However, unlike in Week Two — when West Orange rallied from a 21-point deficit against Rockledge before ultimately falling 49-42 — the Warriors found themselves as the team trying to hold off the surging Dr. Phillips Panthers.

The Warriors led 17-0 early and had extended their lead to 31-7 in the third quarter, before the Panthers came storming back.
