he piece of land that once hosted the old West Orange Country Club soon will become a park, but the historic brick-and-concrete archway — the only remnant of a once-thriving place for socialites to gather — still sits untouched.

First the site of the old country club from 1915 to 1924 and then Tucker and Son Ranch from 1941 onward, the 210-acre parcel of land sits on Avalon Road, east of Johns Lake. In 2011, the City of Winter Garden purchased the land and later announced plans to develop it as a legacy park, the first phase of which is set to open in early 2017.

Grace and Charles MatherSmith moved from Chicago to Florida in the early 1900s and built the old West Orange Country Club in 1911. The club was designed and built by Augustus “Gus” Hart and was once the social hub for West Orange’s well-to-do.

However, despite plans for the land itself, the arched gate — a registered historic landmark — looks out over Avalon Road and provides passersby a glimpse into the past.

“Only the arched gateway, the silent sentinel to times past, stands alone by the side of the old Avalon Road,” wrote Winter Garden Heritage Foundation’s previous executive director, Rod Reeves, in a 2002 email to the City of Winter Garden. “This arched gateway stands as a remnant and reminder of the

unique part that the first West Orange Country Club played in the historical development of the Winter Garden-West Orange area.

“Therefore, the Winter Garden Heritage Museum and Foundation, Inc. hereby declare this site historically significant to the Winter Garden-West Orange area,” Reeves added.

Although there are no current plans set in stone for the archway, Winter Garden staff assures the community that it will be preserved and will one day be restored to its former glory.

“When we bought the land, there was a stipulation that we restore the arch,” said Andrea Vaughn, community relations

manager for the city. “We had said we would restore it. We’ve been approached by the West Orange Country Club because they were interested in having it on their site. It’s a costly endeavor, and right now, there’s no timeline on restoring it.”

In addition to the eventual restoration, the arch one day could be relocated. However, no decision on any possible relocation has been discussed.

“If it is moved, it’ll be expensive,” Vaughn said. “Preparing it for a move, even just restoring it and giving it a good structure, is expensive. Whether or not it’s relocated — to another spot on the land or another location — is still up in the air.”

Regardless of any possibility of relocation in the arch’s future, eventual restoration is definitely on the city’s radar.

But if the city does one day decide to relocate the arch, current West Orange Country Club General Manager George Holland said the club would welcome the historic landmark.

“It would be the greatest thing I could possibly ever hear, if the city decided to rest it at the club, because it would connect the 1920s to today,” Holland said.

“The country club existing with that name is sitting just a few miles down the road, and it’s looking like we’ll be here for years to come. Several of our members and investors have grown up in the area and have passed by it thousands of times. We’d love to put it on display for the rest of the community.”

Grace Mather-Smith was the young bride of Charles Frederic MatherSmith, a wealthy paper manufacturer. The two moved in the early 1900s to Oakland from Chicago, where she was a Follies Dancer and stage actress.

She brought her flair for the dramatic and became known as a local legend.

Grace’s husband built her a 22-room mansion (later expanded to 28), which they named “Edgegrove,” on a bluff overlooking Lake Apopka.

Edgegrove became the social hub of Central Florida, with boating parties, card parties, dances and buffets.

It was said the women of Oakland, already appalled at Grace’s wild behavior, were further shocked when she demonstrated the latest dance craze, the Turkey Trot, to the sewing circle.

Always ready for a social event, Grace invited every child, regardless of age, to the annual birthday party of her oldest child, Grace Mary.

Grace received a new car for her birthday every year. Once, while preparing for a social event, she realized she needed a last-minute item, so she headed to Orlando at breakneck speed in her fancy vehicle. She was stopped and fined $10.

Grace flung a $20 bill at the constable, yelling, “Keep the change; I’ll be coming back through here flying like hell in a few minutes!”

The Mather-Smiths built the original West Orange Country Club on Johns Lake because Grace wanted a place in West Orange County to hold social events.

The couple built and rented out the cottages around the golf course.

The club’s success came to an end when the clubhouse and course were flooded by the overflow of Johns Lake after excessive hurricane rains in 1924. That property is now part of the Tucker Ranch.

In downtown Oakland, the Mather-Smiths sponsored a beautification program. Located west of Tubb Street, where the West Orange Trail cuts through, Grace Park was laid out and landscaped with the help of many local families who raised funds at events such as a Big Fish Supper. There were two circular pools with fountains, flowering vines on trellises, benches and a 12-column pergola with a latticed roof in the center.

Four concrete pillars are all that remain of Grace Park.

Charles died in 1941, and Grace died on New Year’s Day 1962. The two were buried side-by-side in a carved pink marble mausoleum on their property. It was vandalized in 1968, and the family had the bodies and pink markers moved to the Oakland Cemetery.

ORANGE COUNTY It was a hotly

contested election from the get-go, and it’s not over yet.

Because no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in Tuesday’s primary election, voters once again will be asked to cast their ballots for the next Orange County District 1 commissioner.

Oakland resident Betsy VanderLey was the top votegetter in the primary, receiving 9,878 (45.54%) votes. In November’s general election, she will face Winter Garden City Commissioner Robert “Bobby” Olszewski, who received 7,690 (35.45%) votes.

Candidate Nuren Haider received 2,372 (10.94%) votes, and Dr. Usha Jain received 1,751 (8.07%) votes.

VanderLey held her watch party at The VineYard Wine Bar and Healthy Bistro at The Grove Orlando near Windermere.

“A four-way race with 46% is unheard of,” VanderLey said to about 60 supporters in attendance. “Now, we bury him (Olszewski).”

At his own watch party at Graffiti Junktion in Dr. Phillips, Olszewski said he expected the run-off.

“It was a spirited primary, and I look forward to continuing to share my vision for Orange County,” he said.

Olszewski and his wife, Allison, are expecting their daughter to be born any day now.

Despite the lack of sleep that comes with a newborn, Olszewski said he is prepared to resume his campaign.

“I’m a man of faith, and I don’t believe we have any obstacles put in our path that we can’t conquer,” he said.

“We’re going to work harder than any candidate will in this race to show Orange County District 1 that we will put residents and community first back in local government.”

VanderLey declined requests for an interview for this story.

SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 4

In the race for the Orange County School Board District 4 seat, incumbent Pam Gould earned 10,122 (58.99%) votes, while challenger Michele Wilmot received 7,037 (41.01%) votes.

SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 7

In a four-way race for the Orange County School Board District 7 seat, incumbent Christine Moore failed to secure more than 50% of the vote, thus sending this race to a run-off in November.

Moore received 8,353 (45.25%) votes. She will face Matthew Fitzpatrick, who received 4,589 (24.86%) votes.

VANDERLEY PAYMENTS TO MILLENNIUM CONSULTING

campaign mailer sent to Orange County District 1 residents criticizing candidate Robert “Bobby” Olszewski’s attendance record at the MetroPlan Municipal Advisory Committee was paid for and distributed by an electioneering and communications organization owned by the same man who acts as candidate Betsy VanderLey’s hired political consultant.

John Dowless is founder and CEO of Millennium Consulting, an Orlando-based political consulting firm to which VanderLey has paid more than $88,000 during her campaign. Dowless also is chairman and treasurer of Progress and Prosperity for Orange County, the ECO that created and sent the piece regarding Olszewski’s MAC attendance record.

Dowless also is vice chairman of the MAC and council president for the city of Edgewood.

In last week’s candidate Q&A for the West Orange Times & Observer and Windermere Observer, VanderLey said she was aware of the ad but that it was not sent by her campaign.

“My campaign has not published any negative advertising pieces,” VanderLey said. “However, I am aware that a third party has published my opponent’s absentee record highlighting his lack of attendance on committees he references as experience for the office.

“I have never believed in, nor will I engage in, personal attacks that have no bearing on holding public office,” she said.

VanderLey said the money she paid to Millennium Consulting was used to fund mailers that championed her campaign. She said she was aware of the negative ad prior to its release.

“I had heard it was going to happen,” she said. “I had a heads up, but I didn’t approve it or have any control over it.”

Dowless confirmed the negative mailer sent from his ECO was independent from the work he performed for VanderLey as Millennium Consulting. He also confirmed the $88,000 he received from VanderLey’s campaign was not used for the negative ad. Those monies — totaling $6,000 — came from ECO funds.

“It’s separate because they (Millennium clients) are not part of the creative process (in creating the ECO mailers),” he said.

Dowless also said he obtained the information regarding Olzsewski’s record through a public-records request and not through his position on the MAC board.

“I believe we did do a publicrecords request, but that information is also available on the website,” he said.

The negative ad states Olszewski did not attend a MetroPlan MAC meeting in more than a year.

According to a timeline created

by MetroPlan Orlando, Olszewski was appointed to the MAC in June 2012 and was elected as its second vice chairman in June 2014.

It is customary for the second vice chairman to be elected as first vice chairman the following year.

However, in May 2015, thenMAC Chairman Charles Lacey, mayor of Winter Springs, appointed a Nominating Committee to select leadership positions for the following year. That committee included St. Cloud Mayor Rebecca Borders, Maitland Mayor Dale McDonald, Lake Mary Commissioner Sid Miller and Dowless.

At the nominating meeting May 7, 2015, Olszewski was motioned and seconded as first vice chairman, as was Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn. Ultimately, Bruhn was selected. The committee then discussed the idea of keeping Olszewski in the second vice chairman position, but the committee selected St. Cloud Mayor Rebecca Borders instead.

In his response in last week’s Q&A, Olszewski said he decided he could not attend because he questioned the motivations of one MAC member — Dowless.

“When I learned that an elected official and fellow MAC member was using (his) vote on this committee to benefit (his) personal paycheck and benefit (his) clients, I was appalled,” he said. “I brought this to the attention of MetroPlan employee and MAC staff liaison Virginia Whittington, and next, I had a discussion with MetroPlan Executive Director Harry Barley. … Since the ethical voting concerns I had with the MAC fell on deaf ears, I contacted our Winter Garden Mayor John Rees and City Manager Mike Bollhoefer and informed them that I could no longer attend MAC because of this breaching the public’s trust, and they agreed.”

Bollhoefer confirmed he had spoken with Olszewski.

“It was quite some time back, but he did call me and tell me about his issues,” he said. “He had some ethical issues that had to do with

how they voted or picked somebody.”

However, Dowless said Olszewski’s statement is inaccurate and misleading. “(At the time of that meeting) I was not employed by Betsy VanderLey,” he said. “We did not have a contract until February 2016, I believe.”

The first documented payment from VanderLey’s campaign to Dowless’ Millennium Consulting was in Nov. 17, 2015 — $1,150 for consulting/software, according to the Orange County Supervisor of Elections.

Outgoing Orange County District 1 Commissioner S. Scott Boyd, who has endorsed VanderLey, said Olszewski’s statement is inaccurate.

“As the current board chairman of MetroPlan Orlando, I was surprised to read some of what Mr. Olszewski had to say about the Municipal Advisory Committee,” he said. “This committee comprises elected officials from cities and towns throughout our threecounty area. … In an effort to shed some light on a recent campaign advertisement having to do with Mr. Olszewski’s involvement with the Municipal Advisory Committee and inferences made in his profile piece, I asked MetroPlan Orlando’s staff for background information. As a result, I learned that Mr. Olszewski was disappointed that he was not elected to serve in a leadership position with the Municipal Advisory Committee back in July 2015. Since then, he has not attended any committee meetings.

“MetroPlan Orlando neither gets involved in political campaigns nor controls political advertisements,” he said. “The content of the piece submitted by Mr. Olszewski suggested otherwise, and I felt this needed to be corrected.”

Dowless agreed.

“There’s no cronyism with 17 separately elected officials,” he said.

She’s also missing one eye.

THE START OF A JOURNEY

It all started three years ago, when FitzGibbon’s wife read a book about canine search and rescue.

She thought it would be something he would be interested in, so she gave the book to him. After reading it, he did some research online and found the Florida Alliance of Search and Rescue K-9 in DeLand.

“I called up the leader and she said, ‘Come to training; see what we do,’” FitzGibbon said. “So I went out on a Saturday morning and was absolutely amazed watching these dogs work in the woods. That led me to the training for myself, training for the dog and all of that.”

He got Vesper when she was 10 weeks old, and they immediately began her HRD training.

But he quickly realized there was a problem after she suffered constant eye infections, conjunctivitis and other complications. He had to suspend Vesper’s training for a while as they went through the confusing process of trial and error, trying to diagnose and treat the issue.

Eventually, they were referred to the small-animal hospital at the University of Florida in Gaines-

ville, where veterinarians diagnosed Vesper with a neurogenic eye disease that caused the tearproduction gland in her left eye to shut down completely.

For a one-and-one-half years, the family tried eye drops, medications and surgeries. At one point, FitzGibbon had to give Vesper 23 eye drops per day in each eye and six pills. But because Vesper was such a high-drive puppy, it was difficult to wrestle with her and get her to sit still for the medication. So he turned to Central Florida K-9, a dog-training facility in Orlando.

“As a high-drive puppy, it’s kind of like living with a Tasmanian devil,” he said. “Central Florida K-9’s trainers helped me understand how you give 46 eye drops and six pills a day to a dog and not have her hate your guts. They were instrumental with helping me work through her issues on the training side and they have a lot of great advice.”

Eventually, it became evident that Vesper’s eye disease was too severe to be controlled by medication. After a long, extended hospital stay in Gainesville, the only option left was to completely remove her left eye.

Following the removal of Vesper’s eye, she went through a difficult recovery period when she had to wear a “cone of shame” for a few months.

“After several months in recovery we went back out to training and it was like a duck to water,” FitzGibbon said. “She was just right back at it. Her favorite thing to do is search.”

Since then, Vesper and FitzGibbon have continued to train and serve with FASAR K-9 and Central Florida K-9.

FASAR’s search-and-rescue team is a nonprofit organization, and all handlers and dogs are volunteers who train together each week all over Central Florida at environments ranging from state parks to fire-rescue facilities.

“We own our own dogs, we train together as a team and train the dogs together as a team, because training a good search-and-rescue dog takes a team of people,” he said. “You can’t do it individually.

I tell people that it takes a small city to train a rookie handler and certified disabled dog — that took a whole city.”

tion for Search and Rescue HRD Land Type IV Wilderness dog, Vesper’s training is all on-thejob when she is out searching.

FitzGibbon and other handlers put targets and source material out in the woods, and they have different drills and behavioral shaping devices for the dogs.

He said that Vesper, now 3 years old, is a very sweet, high-drive dog who loves people and loves to work. She is a bit more insecure than most dogs because of her limited field of vision but has learned to adjust to targeting.

“Workability-wise, she works just like any other dog on the team,” he said. “I usually deploy her only in areas I’m familiar with or that I’ve walked or seen — I don’t just cut her loose. I have to manage her search area, but if we’re in yards or

field or wilderness, I’m not worried about debris.”

The FASAR team works in conjunction with law enforcement and can be called out any time to assist them in searches. Sometimes the team goes six months or more without a call, but earlier this year, FitzGibbon was out four times in one month.

“Sometimes, we’re out for a day; sometimes we’re out for two to four days,” he said. “We have certified dogs who are trackers and trailers and scent dogs.

We also then have our certified cadaver dogs, so we can respond to whatever situation they have.”

Handlers train the dogs to recognize a certain odor, and if the dogs find it and alert, they get rewarded with a toy or treat.

“It has been a difficult journey, but there has been a whole city of people who have contributed to her success and they all deserve the credit,” he said of Vesper’s journey.

When visiting Cinépolis dinein theaters, most people purchase tickets online before coming.

Theaters typically open 20 minutes before the screening begins, and people can go straight to their seats, where a server will greet them and take their dinner orders.

Depending on when people order, their meal will come out either before the movie or during the beginning.

The theater is designed in such a way that the servers do not block guest’s view of the screen.

The auditoriums, which feature reclining seats, are set up stadium-style, so each seat is above the one in front of it.

Each theater also is equipped with a bar in the lobby. Patrons can enjoy their drink at the bar or take it into the theater. People also can order drinks from their server.

Cinépolis theaters offer experiential events and items specific to each area, Holyoak said. The theaters offer themed merchandise specific to that area, pop-up art shows and specialty drinks and cocktails.

“It’s the only way you’ll ever see a movie after you try it,” Holyoak said.

rowing up in New York, Matt Santorelli dreamed of working for Disney.

Santorelli, who loved sketching and the visual arts, hoped to illustrate animations, drawing inspiration from some of his favorite Disney animations “Aladdin” and “Beauty and the Beast.”

As he grew older, Santorelli’s interest turned to performing.

When his family moved to Florida, he landed a job in performance at Walt Disney World.

More than 15 years later, Santorelli, a Horizon West resident, is still involved in the world of Disney performance, this time with Feld Entertainment. He is the company manager of “Disney On Ice Presents Follow Your Heart,” which opens Sept. 2 at the Amway Center, before traveling around the east coast of the U.S. and into Canada.

I’ve always been a fan of theirs and am loving their new quaint location on Plant Street (to the left of Urban Flats). And now, their breakfast is to die for. The cafe latte was delicious. Carlos, the waiter, was fantastic and friendly.

We split the avocado toast which had a poached egg, prosciutto and Romesco sauce (menu also said feta, but it didn’t have any and we didn’t remember to ask about it since it was amazing as is), along with the skillet potatoes with red peppers and onions as well as a multi-grain bagel with lox. I’ve grown up on the latter, and this was every bit as tasty as my New York lox and bagel.

“Disney On Ice” shows play in large arenas across the world.

This show includes characters from several Disney favorite animated movies, with the performers doing the entire show while ice skating.

“The story line is really inspiring, and I think it’s going to hit home for a lot of kids and parents,” Santorelli said.

HUNNY HELPER

As a Disney performer, Santorelli performed in nearly every Disney theme park. He was in “Fantasmic!,” “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” Christmas shows and parades around the park. His acting experience didn’t end after his stint at Walt Disney World.

In 2005, Feld Entertainment hired him as a performer in its Disney Live! shows. He got to travel the world while performing in “Winnie the Pooh,” when he played a hunny helper, a comical character who helped the story line to progress.

One of his favorite memories from that time is when his brother and mother got to see him perform — in Rome.

After performing for three years with Feld, Santorelli began to feel he was aging out of continual performance and wanted to try some backstage work.

“In my mind, I thought, ‘Man I’m getting old; I can’t be putting on clown makeup forever,’” he said with a laugh. “But I was always fascinated with what happens backstage to put on a production.”

He worked up the ranks from tour coordinator to company manager in various shows. As a performer, Santorelli didn’t find the transition easy.

“It took some getting used to,” he said. “I had to restrain myself from wanting to hop in front of a camera every now and then. … But it’s a different type of rewarding experience. There’s nothing like being on stage and performing for an audience, but there’s nothing like sitting in the audience and watching from the stands kids enjoying the show.”

As he began to work with the Disney On Ice shows, he was amazed by the performers’ abilities in athletics as well as their ability to portray their roles at the same time.

ON THE ROAD

As company manager, Santorelli is involved with everything from coordinating hotel stays to managing company members. He directly interacts with the performers every day.

As the company travels around the east coast of the U.S. and into Canada, Santorelli won’t come home until the tour concludes in April 2017.

That’s why Santorelli is excited about two stops — the opening in Orlando and the stop in Brooklyn.

In Orlando, his parents and sibling’s families will be able to come see the performance. His extended family will get to enjoy the show in Brooklyn.

“I grew up in a big Italian family, and (family) was the center,” he said.

Fitness facility doubles in size

Horizon West resident Clay Harris recently moved his Anytime Fitness gym in Lakeside Village into a facility double the size of the previous location.

used to own UPS stores until he ended up selling them after realizing retail was not for him. Following that, he had a lot of free time and began focusing on himself.

“I wasn’t working out; I was sluggish and didn’t like the way I looked or felt,” he said. “I hired a personal trainer and worked with them for about six months and saw great results. Something just kind of clicked. … I’ve been living in this area for a while and said, ‘Why is there no gym around here?’”

He began researching smaller fitness clubs because he wanted something more personal. And with his background in store man-

agement, he looked into franchises and came across Anytime Fitness.

“With a lot of gyms you have thousands of members, and I didn’t want to just open a gym and sell memberships,” he said. “I wanted to work on a club culture and get to know all the members and help them reach their fitness goals. I can’t service 5,000, members but I can help 800 to 900 pretty easily. Everybody has to find what’s right for them. We offer that smaller, more intimate gym experience.”

The gym was open again the next day.

The new location boasts an all-new functional-training floor area, as well as an area of open space where people can use battle ropes, exercise balls, weights and more to create their own workouts.

The gym also has new equipment and a revamped free-weight area and will be rolling out new fitness classes within the next few months.

“Everything is way more intense,” Bargnare said at the team’s media day Aug. 17. “Everybody around me is faster and stronger. I’ve had to get adjusted to that.”

Luckily, Bargnare has had a familiar face to help.

hrough his work as an onair analyst for Fox Sports covering NFL and college football, Charles Davis has had the opportunity to cover plenty of highprofile events over the years.

The Windermere resident and former NFL defensive back has, among other things, been a part of broadcast teams covering NFL games, the NFL Draft, college football national championships and the NCAA Tournament.

Through that work, Davis regularly appears on television and also is often a guest on sports-talk radio programs of all sizes — from national to local.

With all of that said, as far as Davis’ son — Rollins College freshman basketball player Parker Davis — and his friends are concerned, all those achievements pale in comparison to his latest project.

Alongside play-by-play announcer Brandon Gaudin, Davis is the newest color commentator for the enormously popular Madden NFL video game franchise, lending his analysis to Madden NFL 17, which was released last week.

“I’ve done a lot of things, and I’ve been lucky in my career,” Davis said with a laugh. “But telling (my son) I got this, for the first time I felt like the ‘cool factor’ was there — that he thought I was halfway cool. And not just him, but his friends (too).”

Beyond the prestige of filling a role that has previously been performed by some legends of the broadcast booth, Davis said he has been struck by the power of the Madden brand through his work.

When he was awarded the job in October 2015, he signed a nondisclosure agreement until the announcement of the broadcast CONTINUED ON PAGE 12A

Despite an age difference of nearly two decades, Charles Davis and Brandon Gaudin had immediate chemistry as the new broadcast duo for the Madden NFL franchise.

For Davis, working with Gaudin has been an added perk of the experience.

“I wanted to work with Brandon; no doubt,” Davis said.

“He’s obviously a pro.

This guy has a ton of knowledge, great experiences and he’s tremendous with people. You’re immediately comfortable with him.”

Gaudin will be a playby-play commentator for the Big Ten Network this fall and has previous experience with Westwood One calling NCAA Tournament games, was the voice of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Butler Bulldogs and has also worked for ESPN3, among other stops.

I watched “Captain America: Civl War.” I liked it. It was action-packed, and I like action-packed movies.

If you could be any superhero, which would you be and why?

I would be Captain America, because he’s a leader and I want to be a leader. A leader is respected, and you can change people.

What’s your favorite subject in school?

I like social studies, because I like learning about history and geography.

Patti, a senior for the Knights, is in his third year with the program and currently is listed as the team’s backup quarterback.

Returning to Orlando after starting his career out west at Boise State, Patti said he has been energized by the arrival of a fellow Dr. Phillips alumnus.

“It’s been awesome,” Patti said. “I got fired up when I heard (Bargnare) was coming, and I got fired up when I heard (current Dr. Phillips senior) Marvin (Washington) was coming (next year). ... There’s a lot of talent here (locally), and that could be a seriously big thing for UCF.” Bargnare said Patti has been quick to lend a helping hand as he continues to get adjusted to the college game and all that goes with it — including postpractice ice baths that the former Panther said are significantly colder than those he was used to from high school.

Both players have taken reps with the Knights’ first-and second-unit offenses in practice — first-year head coach Scott Frost created a training camp environment where nearly every job was up for grabs.

Justin Holman, for a place atop the Knights’ depth chart, the senior said he took notice of Bargnare’s performances so far.

“He works extremely hard, and he’s doing a great job in camp,” Patti said. “We’ve taken reps together. ... Every time he has gotten an opportunity, he’s taken advantage of it.”

“It’s a great environment at UCF right now,” Bargnare said.

“It’s a great time to be here.”

Davis proud of role in game CONTINUED FROM PAGE 11A

team in June 2016. So, as Davis went about his usual work of covering the NFL last season and doing prep interviews with players, he was amazed at how often the game organically came up in conversation.

“It’s ubiquitous in the business,” Davis said, adding that “guys are really serious about their Madden ratings.”

Davis was contacted about the auditioning process for the job in mid-2015 and, given the game’s brand and his own familiarity with it, he was interested in giving it a shot. Once Davis had completed the first audition at EA Sports’ offices in Maitland, though, what had been a casual interest became a goal. “(After the) first audition, I walked out of there, climbed into the car, and I remember vividly thinking, ‘I really want this,’” Davis said.

After a second audition, this time with Gaudin, Davis got the job. From there, a months-long recording process began.

“I imagined it being tedious — but it’s way more detailed than I even thought,” Davis said. “We have a writer who will outline,

‘OK, today we’re going to go over red-zone touchdown passes’ — and we’ll have (to call) it from the 10-yard line in, from the 15-yard line in, and so on.”

Indeed, Davis and Gaudin were responsible for trying to cover every possible scenario with any number of variables.

Additionally, the broadcast duo will return to the booth periodically, as they did Aug. 29, to record small updates that game owners can download to keep the commentary content fresh. That day, for example, the pair recorded an updated dialogue on San Diego Chargers draft pick Joey Bosa, who had ended his contract holdout and joined the team for training camp that morning.

Creating a game experience in which the user isn’t able to reliably predict what the announcers will say next is a tedious and intensive process — and it goes beyond just time in the booth to Gaudin and Davis doing their homework, as well.

“What people don’t realize, I think a lot of times analysts get pegged as guys who just show up on Saturdays or Sundays, take their knowledge from when they played and translate that onto

your television,” Gaudin said.

“There may some guys that do that, but Charles doesn’t do that. … He is watching film, he is studying. He is a constant student of the game.”

If what Gaudin and Davis did was tedious, the overall process of creating Madden NFL 17 is something else entirely. Davis said that, over the months he has been involved with the game and its production, he has been grateful to be a part of the culture at EA Sports in Maitland, where the game is made.

“They love working on this franchise, and they love working with each other,” Davis said.

“They’re the type of people that they may walk out of here at night, but it’s never far from their mind. … It’s not just a job.”

With all that in mind and with the knowledge of what the game means to so many, Davis shows humility when he talks about the role the broadcast duo actually plays within the gaming experience.

“We just don’t want to get in the way of the enjoyment of people playing the game,” he said.

lthough there were plenty of positives to be taken away from the Dr. Phillips Panthers’ (1-0) sound defeat of the visiting Wekiva Mustangs (0-1) in Week One, there is one that stood out to veteran coach Rodney Wells: the Panthers’ discipline.

“Last week, (in the Kickoff Classic against Jones), we probably had 150 yards in penalties,” Wells said. “This week, we played a very clean game.”

Dr. Phillips totaled just 65 yards on eight penalties, a significant improvement from the Kickoff Classic.

Meanwhile, although it took a total-team effort to beat the Mustangs, Tanner Ingle’s 90-yard kick return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff certainly helped to get things going on the Dr. Phillips’ sideline.

“Anytime you score on the opening play of the game, the excitement that you get from the kids on the sideline, it just brings momentum,” Wells said.

“That was the biggest play of the game.”

CENTRAL TIME The Windermere Prep Lakers will be taking a road trip with mileage reminiscent of NFL and Division I college programs this week, The team will travel nearly 1,000 miles west to Texas to take on Houston’s The Village School — another school in the Nord Anglia Education family.

“We are really excited,” head coach Jacob Doss. “We’re playing our sister school. … The boys have been working for that, and that’s been highlighted on our calendar for a long time.”

Both teams are coming off a win in Week One, with The Village School fresh off of a 19-6 victory against Legacy Prep Christian Academy, of Magnolia, Texas. Windermere Prep will hope to replicate its defensive success of the past two weeks, having allowed just nine points — combined — between its Kickoff Classic against Cornerstone Charter and Week One victory over Boca Raton Christian.

LAKE MARY (0-1) AT DR. PHILLIPS (1-0), 7 P.M. SCOUTING REPORT: The Panthers will welcome to the Rams to Southwest Orlando for a rematch of last year’s game, which Dr. Phillips won 28-17.

This time, the Panthers figure to be even stronger favorites than a year ago, with Lake Mary coming off of a sound 62-24 defeat at the hand of Jacksonville Bolles.

Where the Panthers started the 2015 season with three consecutive road games — at Wekiva, Lake Mary and West Orange — the opposite is true in 2016. Head coach Rodney Wells said it is nice to have his program setting the tone on its home field at Bill Spoone Stadium in the first few weeks.

“We love playing here — this is our comfort zone,” Wells said.

EAST RIVER (1-0) AT OLYMPIA (0-1), 7 P.M. SCOUTING REPORT: After two unimpressive outings against teams from Seminole County, the Titans hope to rebound at home against a Metro opponent. East River comes to town coached by a familiar face, as

first-year head coach Collin Drafts — a former offensive coordinator at Olympia — brings his program fresh off of a Week One victory over University.

Of particular importance is for the Titans’ offense, which has scored just 19 points through the Kickoff Classic and Week One, to develop a rhythm.

THE FIRST ACADEMY (1-0) AT FOUNDATION ACADEMY (0-1), 7 P.M. SCOUTING REPORT: Considering its tradition and history, The First Academy is a program that — in many ways — Foundation Academy would do well to emulate. On Friday, though, the Lions will try and make the statement that they’re the better team this fall after a 28-14 loss to the Royals in 2015.

After facing a pass-heavy attack from West Orange in Week One, Foundation will instead have to contend with the ground-heavy attack of The First Academy’s Chance Bush and Greg Fields.

“We are going to be ready for TFA,” Lions coach Brad Lord said. “We got something for them next week.”

WINTER PARK (0-1) AT WEST ORANGE (1-0), 7 P.M. SCOUTING REPORT: Although the Warriors soundly defeated the Wildcats in 2015, 42-14, no one on the West Orange sideline will be taking Winter Park lightly this time around. The Wildcats are expected to be one of the area’s better teams and just narrowly was defeated by an improved Lake Nona team in Week One, 27-26.

This will be an important earlyseason test for an inexperienced West Orange defense against a quality Class 8Aopponent.

This game was originally supposed to be played at Showalter Field in Winter Park, but the ongoing installation of a turf field forced it to be relocated to Winter Garden.

CFCA — BYE SCOUTING REPORT: The Eagles (0-1) were defeated by rival Orlando Christian Prep in their opener and will get an opportunity for improvement before they return to the field Sept. 9 at home against TFA.

“I don’t have to worry about my kids or my animals or husband being around them. They can even help me a lot of times.”

It all began in 2009. After Jones graduated college, she had been working in marketing and did freelance graphic design. She knew she wanted to do something to help further the environmental movement but was dismayed with the greenwashing of things.

In college, she had mixed her own cleaning products but had given it up.

“When we were moving in, I found my old recipes and I thought, ‘I could do that,’ because I love to clean and know how toxic traditional cleaning products are,” she said. “I was like, ‘I’m going to develop my own line and use that as my platform to educate about environmental causes.’”

Jones spent a year working on formulas and mixing ingredients in the kitchen. Each product uses natural, non-toxic ingredients that people might already have in their homes, such as vinegar and essential oils. Once she perfected the formulas, she began designing the reusable packaging.

She posted her products on Etsy one day, not even thinking they would sell. By that weekend, she had sold out. From there, it turned into a hobby and side business, but it just kept growing. Eventually, she quit her full-time job to focus on the business.

When her first daughter, Aubrey, was born in 2012, she wanted to be a full-time mom, so she hired two girls to come in and help her with running the business. Now, she sells her products online and in boutiques across the country, even working with a monthly membership cleaning box. At one point, big-name brands such as Anthropologie and SEE MRS. “It’s nice; I take care of the girls during the day and they’re always out in the garage helping out,” she said. “It’s turned into this major part-time gig that I run out of the garage.”

KEEPING IT SIMPLE

When she started making her products, she knew she wanted to keep it simple. Instead of creating a different product for every type of surface, her line was going to be small, with only the basic necessities.

“The thing about the cleaning market is we have a product for every different surface and room, and there’s like a million products out there,” she said. “I wanted to design a small line you could carry around in a tote and clean your house top to bottom and you wouldn’t need anything else.”

She currently has seven products, each of which has a different purpose. “Clean” is an all-purpose disinfecting spray, made from vinegar and essential oils. “Shine” is used for wood and leather, and “Sparkle” cleans glass, granite and stainless steel.

“Soapy” is an all-purpose dilutable, good for tackling big jobs such as washing floors, bathtubs and cars. Jones also has a laundry soap and fabric softener combination, toilet-bowl bombs and a soft cleaning scrub, which smells like frosting.

Jones’ motto for her products is “ordinary ingredients, extraordinary results.” Sometimes she thinks customers might not expect a pretty bottle that uses baking soda and vinegar to be an effective cleaner. Many consumers have been frightened into thinking germs are everywhere and they need chemicals to clean them, she said, but these natural ingredients are actually effective cleaners and disinfectants.

“I have great family and great friends (who) have been supporting me with this from Day One,” she said. “If something ever happened and this business was no longer, I would still make these recipes for myself. They work, they’re absolutely safe, and I’m not throwing toxic stuff into the dump.”

Community service projects are a key component to the club.

Recently, the WGC provided the irrigation and the floral and plant landscaping at the 1887 Windermere Schoolhouse, which was preserved and dedicated last December. Only plants that would have grown at the time the school was operating were planted.

Members deliver six small arrangements each month to hospice patients at Ocoee Healthcare Center and sign up to take flowers each week to the Windermere Library.

“It’s people and plants and a lot of friendships,” Janet Sgamma,

publicity chair, said of the organization, which currently boasts 55 members.

“We have ladies who just dig in the dirt; we have ladies who do arrangements,” Club President Bonnie Baum said. “It’s such a variety.”

The club is active with Windermere youth, too, serving as a Partner in Education at Windermere Elementary School and maintaining its butterfly garden.

The town of Windermere is an officially designated USA Tree City, and club members have hosted an Arbor Day ceremony for more than 25 years around Windermere Town Hall. About 120 preschoolers from Windermere Union Church participate in the program, which includes a police honor guard, a proclamation from Mayor Gary Bruhn, tree songs and a tree planting.

The WGC contributes to organizations such as Nehrling Gardens and Penny Pines that support the environment. It also awards annual college scholarships and financial support to students at Wekiva Youth Camp.

“We are all very proud of our club and the good works that we do for our community,” Sgamma said.

“There are so many friendships among members that have evolved over the years that result in a very warm and welcoming group.”
