Talks continue on potential hotel in downtown W.G. Winter Garden residents shared their thoughts regarding a potential boutique hotel downtown.

The possibility of a hotel coming to downtown Winter Garden drew many residents into the Winter Garden commission chambers during the Aug. 23 commission meeting.

After hearing from some of those residents, city leaders voted

unanimously to move forward with exploring the opportunity of building a hotel in downtown Winter Garden at 8 N. Highland Ave. City Manager Mike Bollhoefer emphasized this is just the beginning of the process and that the developer will still have meet certain criteria for the proposed hotel.

Sweet success Winter Garden Honey Farm is nearing completion on its new self-serve honey stand.

It has been a bumper crop for honey at Winter Garden Honey Farm — so much so that Bob and Trilby Stevens have had to postpone the grand opening of their expanded self-serve stand. Originally scheduled for early September, the event now will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17.

Bob Stevens has big plans for his stand, which is set up at 9816 Tower Pine Drive, in Winter Garden, and is open 24 hours a day.

The current stand was built as an open-air wooden structure with his honey products lined up on shelves and an honor-system payment format. It was covered, but wind and rain were damaging the paper labels and information sheets.

The new stand will be enclosed and more user-friendly, Stevens said, and it will feature two components. The market side will offer more products and a floral section. The education side will include a large observation hive and learning materials.

“I’m making half of it an education side, because I get so many inquiries from parents and

schools and Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts,” Stevens said.

In addition to the self-serve stand, Winter Garden Honey Farm products are sold on Saturdays at the Winter Garden Farmers Market. Bottles, Mason jars and gallon jugs of honey are available.

LIFELONG BEEKEPER

Stevens began his fascination with keeping bees when he was 8 after seeing a local man with a few hives of his own. This man, Jim Bradshaw, would be Stevens’ beekeeping mentor for 50 years.

Stevens started his first honey company in Windermere in 1975, at age 15. Ten years later, he opened another one in Apopka.

In the 1980s, he worked for several honey companies before opening Bob’s Honey in 1985 in Apopka.

In 2010, the Stevenses launched Winter Garden Honey Farm.

Their raw honey is 100% pure, and “what you buy is exactly what the bees make,” they said.

The company uses four floral sources for their product — orange blossom, which blooms in March; palmetto, which blooms in April and May; sabal palm, which blooms in June, July and September; and Brazilian “sweet”

Ocoee townhome proposal clears first commission hurdle The Meritage Homes development, which includes 200 townhomes, passed its first reading.

During the Aug. 21 Ocoee City Commission meeting, city leaders approved the first reading of a proposed ordinance regarding a property in north Ocoee where an applicant plans to construct 200 townhomes.

The 29-acre property for the proposed development, known as the Greens at Forest Lake PUD, is located northwest of State Road 429 at the eastern terminus of Fountains West Boulevard, and east of the West Orange Trail and

Renaissance Charter School at Crown Point.

The applicant, Meritage Homes, requested a change in the zoning classification and future land-use designation from city of Ocoee low-density residential to city of Ocoee medium-density residential.

According to city documents, Meritage is requesting to develop the property with a density of 6.89 dwelling units per acre. Meritage has proposed to build threebedroom, two-bathroom townhomes with a two-car garage on lot sizes measuring 24 feet wide

by 107 feet deep.

The site also would have 73 guest parking spaces and have access via an extension of Fountains West Boulevard and an additional future access on the south side of the property, according to city documents.

The north side of the proposed development would have an aluminum fence overlooking the Forest Lake Golf Course, and the east side would include a 55-foot buffer to S.R. 429, excluding a southwest area, which would have a 35-foot buffer near the S.R. 429 exit ramp.

pepper, which blooms in September and October.

Orange Blossom Honey has a light, citrus aftertaste that varies according to the variety of orange used. It also is much sweeter than other honeys, Stevens said.

Palmetto Honey is a byproduct of the production of saw palmetto berries, he said, and is considered a gourmet honey.

“Saw palmetto honey is one of the honey greats that will change your mind about buying blended honey from the store shelf,” Stevens says on the farm’s website.

Sabal palms produce flowers on multi-branched stalks that attract bees in the summertime and yield a dark-amber honey.

The farm’s Brazilian pepper honey comes from Cocoa and is popular in Florida. It is sweet with a subtle spicy aftertaste.

IN OTHER NEWS n Ocoee commissioners approved an agreement with Kid’s Community College Charter School that requires the city’s police department to provide one school resource officer for the 2018-19 school year. The city will be reimbursed $70,000 for providing the SRO. n City commissioners authorized an interlocal cost-share agreement with Orange County for planned improvements to the Fullers Cross Road and Ocoee-Apopka Road intersection. The proposed improvements include the addition of four left-turn lanes and two

open space and a .80-acre recreation tract consisting of a pool, cabana and playground, according to city documents.

The three firms were selected out of the nine that responded to a request for proposals sent out in June. Enterprises Inc. n Commissioners approved the second reading of a rezoning ordinance for a property located at 651 S. Bluford Ave. The property owner plans to build a Top Gun Cheer facility at the 4.51-acre site.

S

ending a child to kindergarten is a big deal to any family, but it is even more special to Brittany Snipes and Tommy Bliven, whose 5-year-old son, Landon, has been fighting leukemia since January 2017.

Although he’s considered in remission, he must take a daily oral dose of chemotherapyy and five-day-a-month steroids and endure monthly chemotherapy and spinal taps. Landon, of Winter Garden, is on the long-term maintenance plan because he was considered in the very-high-risk category when he was diagnosed, his mother said.

His three-and-one-half-years of treatments will continue until May 2020.

In the meantime, Landon is going to school when he feels well enough, eating plenty of Chick-fil-A (with a double order of fries), watching “Avengers: Infinity War” and playing “Jurassic World” on his Xbox.

On Wednesday, Sept. 5, Landon and his parents will be in downtown Winter Garden to receive a proclamation from Mayor John Rees and to celebrate the lives of other local children battling cancer.

“We are asking Winter Garden’s local businesses to light up in gold,” said Lydia Rodriguez, senior campaign manager for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

“By doing this, it will help raise awareness and honor children with cancer. This year, we are calling the event Light up for Landon.

My goal is to host and honor a new child in Winter Garden every year in September.

“This is a way for us to support our local families who are battling cancer and to honor/remember the ones who have fought this dreadful disease,” Rodriguez said.

Employees at The Whole Enchilada, where Snipes is working part-time, will be wearing black and gold in September.

The names are familiar, but the titles have changed.

Longtime local leaders Jerry Demings and Teresa Jacobs will continue to represent constituents Orange County — but in different capacities.

Demings, former Orange County sheriff, will succeed Jacobs as the next Orange County mayor.

Jacobs will remain in the spotlight, though, as chair of the Orange County School Board.

Both candidates won their respective races handily. Demings won 113,261 votes (61.6%%), easily besting challengers Pete Clarke, who received 40,468 votes (22.01%), and Rob Panepinto, who earned 30,148 votes (16.4%).

Similarly, Jacobs emerged from a field a four with 94,546 votes (52.25%). That total was enough to boost her over challengers Matthew Fitzpatrick, 30,190 votes (16.69%); Robert Prater, 9,651 votes (5.33%); and Nancy Robbinson, 46,546 votes (25.73%).

It all started with a high fever in January 2017. After several days, his parents took him to see his pediatrician, who suspected mononucleosis. Blood tests and a trip to the hospital revealed something worse: Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

“That moment, our entire world turned upside, medical words had no meaning to us, and we had to come to terms with the ‘C’ word for our one and only 4-year-old son,” Snipes wrote on a crowdfunding page she set up.

“Landon had no idea that this meant no more school, hanging out with friends every weekend, sporadic Disney trips or even trips to Target or Publix on a normal basis,” she wrote. “He had no idea that every night or day was going to be a surprise and every moment after that would follow an on-going doctor’s appointment, which could be daily, weekly or monthly, hospital trips at any moment and chemo treatments frequently.

The bad news was his white cell count was 71,000; the good news

was there were no signs of leukemia in his spinal fluid or organs.

Snipes quit her full-time job so she could care for her son.

“I took the whole first year off because he couldn’t go to school and he was in the hospital, like, every day,” she said. Once he got cleared for school I went back to work part-time. That’s my fun job; that’s my ‘me’ time now.”

As for Landon, he’s looking forward to turning 6 on Sept. 20. His parents are grateful for that milestone, too.

“Landon is also not the only kid having to battle this disease, and our goal is not to just fight for Landon but to also raise awareness and give whatever we can to also help others just like him,” Snipes wrote on the GoFundMe account.

“We truly believe that there was a reason that this happened and it’s God’s will to use Landon as a vehicle to create a community for families just like ours and to put a smile on every kid’s face as they battle this disease.”

From his watch party Aug. 28 at the Florida Hotel and Conference Center’s Heroes Ballroom, Demings said he was ready to begin work as Orange County’s next mayor.

“I promise to put the people first over politics as we continue to make Orange County a great place to live, work and do business,” he said. “I am excited about our future, and I’m ready to get to work as your mayor.

“To the voters, thank you,” Demings said. “I owe you a debt of gratitude for entrusting me to be the fifth elected mayor of Orange County. My victory tonight speaks volumes of just how far this community has come. The son of a maid and a taxicab driver has been elected. I hope that this inspires every boy or a girl, because if you work hard and you play by the rules, you can become whoever you dream to be.”

In her victory speech Aug. 28 at MetroWest Golf Club, Jacobs vowed this was just the beginning of her influence in local public education. She noted school safety

and teachers as priorities.

“Those teachers are so, incredibly important, and we as a society have forgotten that,” she said.

“We’ve forgotten to pay them for the important job that they do, and we’ve got to do better. It ought to be (that you) proudly serve as a teacher. And you ought to be able to make a living and support your family doing that.

“So, that’s a job bigger than just Orange County Public Schools,” Jacobs said. “That’s a statewide challenge, but we’ve all got … to tackle that challenge together. The one thing I know about Orange County — unlike any place else I’ve ever lived — when we put our minds to something, when we put aside our differences and we agree on the direction we’re going, we are unstoppable.”

In addition to these two races, Orange County voters delivered a landslide victory for Orange County Public Schools as they passed the ad-valorem millage with 152,881 votes (83.55%).

COUNTY COMMISSION DISTRICT 2

With no one in the field of four earning more than 50% of the vote, the race for Orange County Commission District 2 will continue to the Nov. 6 General Election.

Voters will choose between candidates Patricia Rumph, 9,698 votes (30.09%) and Christine Moore, 9,181 votes (28.48%), the top two candidates in the primary.

Candidate Fred Brummer received 7,599 votes (23.57%), and Mark Byrd received 5,757 votes (17.86%).

SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 7

Similarly, the race for Orange County School Board District 7 also will continue to November, when voters will select between the top two candidates, Melissa Mitchell Byrd, 12,360 votes (45.34%) and Eric Schwalbach, 6,259 votes (22.96%).

Primary candidate ChanDenise Budhoo received 6,140 votes (22.52%), while Jeffrey Richardson received 2,501 votes (9.17%).

“This meeting tonight is not to talk about approval to approve a hotel,” Bollhoefer said “We’re nowhere close to that.”

He later added this is just the beginning of a long process, which includes community meetings at later dates.

Bollhoefer said one of the reasons the developers chose the city is because they have ties to Winter Garden. He added the developer will be having designers and planners visit the area and design the hotel to match the character of downtown.

“They design it to be part of the community,” Bollhoefer said.

“The reason they chose this site is (because) … their design and their style of hotel fits in the middle of the city. That’s why they chose this site as opposed to other areas.”

Although he supports building more hotels in the city, Mayor John Rees said he would prefer the hotel be built elsewhere.

“I think I said last meeting this is not the first site I would pick (for a hotel),” Rees said. “There’s a couple of other sites … but having said that, I think for years, we’ve needed a hotel in Winter Garden.”

Michael Lanza is the owner of the Edgewater Hotel. He said he is concerned over the proposed hotel’s potential impact to the downtown’s historic identity.

“The impact of the historic district of the proposed building — that’s our concern,” Lanza said.

“A major concern that we have is losing the identity of the historic district in all of the new construction. … Overall, we don’t want to see us possibly lose our federal designation as a historic and our historic identity in the process.”

Wes Catlett-Miller is a member of the board of directors for the Garden Theatre. He spoke in support of the proposed hotel because it poses an opportunity to increase tourism, which would bring more money to local businesses.

“I’ve seen the economic impact that the people and the tourism that comes into Plant Street brings to the town,” CatlettMiller said. “When I look at a boutique hotel opening up … I see economic impact.”

During the Aug. 9 meeting, commissioners voted unanimously to allow city staff to draft a letter of intent expressing interest in the possibility a building a boutique hotel at 8 N. Highland Ave. The city currently owns the building at the proposed site. The city also would have contributed $15,000 toward design costs. City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said staff will no longer be drafting the letter or contributing the money for design costs. The action taken by the commission at the Aug. 23 meeting replaces the action take at the Aug. 9 meeting.

“This hotel would generate for downtown $3.8 million in benefits … from additional revenues,” Bollhoefer said.

A representative speaking on behalf of the developers said they do not wish to comment on the project at this time because it is “still in its infancy.”

n Winter Garden Finance Director Laura Zielonka led a workshop to go over the proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2018-19. The general fund for the next fiscal year totals $38,819,161, which is $3,161,195 more than the prior fiscal year. The proposed budget also includes a tentative millage rate of 4.5, which is a 0.25 mill increase from the current millage rate of 4.25. The increase would help make up for expected loss revenues that could result from a change in the state constitution later this year. Additionally, the proposed rate still can be changed at later budget meetings.

The next budget hearings will take place during the Sept. 13 and Sept.

27 meetings. n Commissioners voted unanimously to approve a recommendation to promote Stephen Graham to the position of Winter Garden’s chief of police. n City leaders voted unanimously to postpone two ordinances that pertain to wetlands within the city. Both ordinances were scheduled for second reading at the meeting. However, they have been postponed to an unknown date pending review of the ordinances by the state. Ordinance 18-24 proposed an amendment to a policy of the future land-use element and also proposed to amend policies of the conservation element of the city’s comprehensive plan. Ordinance 18-25 proposed changes to the city code of ordinances dealing with wetlands, wetland jurisdictional limit determinations, wetland buffer yard requirements and uses allowed in wetlands. n Commissioners approved the second reading of three ordinances pertaining to a 1-acre property located at 1220 E. Story Road. Ordinances 18-26, 18-27 and 18-28 respectively pertain to the annexation, future land-use designation and rezoning of the subject property.

The property is annexed into the city and zoned city I-1 light industrial and warehousing district. n City leaders also approved the second reading of Ordinance 18-33, which rezones a 1.95-acre parcel at 1200 E. Plant St. from C-2 (arterial commercial district) to CAPUD (character area planned unit development). The approval allows for the development of a new, two-story, 25,000-square-foot commercial building, described as the West Orange Healthcare District CAPUD. n Commissioners approved the second reading of an ordinance to change section 118-1310 of City Code to provide that the construction or installation of storage building fewer than 160 square feet as an accessory building does not require submitting building plans. n City leaders approved an amended and restated Oakland Development Interlocal Agreement with the town of Oakland. The commission also approve the second amendment to the developer’s agreement for the Oakland Park Planned Development. The amended and restated interlocal agreement states that the City of Winter Garden will provide sewer and reclaimed water services for up to 295 single-family homes in the planned development, among other stipulations. Additionally, the amendment to the developer’s agreement for the Oakland Park PD makes the developer’s agreement consistent with the amended and restated interlocal agreement.

Orange County School Board approves legislative priorities The School Board agreed on a list of education policy objectives the district plans to advocate for during upcoming sessions in the state and federal legislatures.

Orange County School Board members agreed recently on their 2019 legislative platform — a list of issues regarding public education of which they wish to direct the district’s advocacy efforts.

The consensus came during the Aug. 21 Orange County School Board meeting, but the platform was written based on a review of the 2018 Legislative Session and input from school board members, district staff and teachers.

The platform, approved annually, serves as a guideline for what the district hopes to see accomplished in the upcoming legislative session.

“The goal is to have a platform that represents the board and includes the issues that we feel are the most important for us to advocate,” said District 2 School Board member Darryl Flynn, who chairs the school board’s legislative committee. “We have a fulltime legislative liaison — Eileen Fernandez — who goes to the sessions each year and works with the individual offices. And so, these platforms form the basis of her advocacy on behalf of OCPS.” At the end of each session, the board is provided an update on which bills ultimately passed or failed. At that time, the committee starts working on another legislative platform for the following year.

This year’s platform includes objectives relating to accountability standards, academic assessments, teacher evaluations, Title I funding, and state funding allocations, among others.

Flynn provided an explanation and context to some of the priorities targeted by the school board this year.

Support the identification and/or dedication of new or existing state funding for K-12 public schools to keep up with growth, costs and inflation.

Flynn: “This past year, they rolled back the millage for public schools, so public education didn’t get the benefit of the (increase) in values of homes because they rolled it back.

They didn’t do that for local governments, but they did it for schools. So we would have preferred if they had at least left it like it was. Yes, we would pay more, but that would help fund public education. So that priority speaks to the rolled-back rate, but it also speaks to identifying new potential areas for fund-

ing. For example, if the Seminole gambling compact becomes a reality, then perhaps we could put some of that revenue into education.”

Apply the same accountability system for all educational entities directly or indirectly receiving state tax dollars.

Flynn: “There are students who are eligible for these vouchers that are administered by Step up For Students, and they can take these vouchers and go to a private school. ... And a lot, not all, but a lot of private schools accept state vouchers, but they don’t have any accountability, they’re not required to administer the FSA, and they don’t get graded. Charter schools do get graded the same way as traditional public schools, though, so it’s mainly about those vouchers. That’s what we mean by accountability.”

Support district authority over teacher evaluations and pay for performance.

Flynn: “A couple of years ago, I pushed for an analysis on how performance pay impacted the students’ performance. What performance pay is is that teachers get paid based on how their students score on tests. And this supposedly impacts student achievement, so we did an analysis that showed there was no correlation between performance pay and student achievement, so we’d like to either eliminate it or have the legislature do a bigger study statewide.

And for teacher evaluations, it’s the same thing, we’d like to have a little bit more flexibility on how that’s administered and maybe put other measures into the evaluation.”

Support measures that restore school board’s oversight of all Title I funds allocated to the school district.

Flynn: “There are legislators on the federal and state level who feel that the funds should follow the individual child. So what we’re doing now is we look at a school and see the number of students who … qualify under Title I, and we share those funds with schools that reach a certain percentage of those students. ...

What this Title I portability does is follow every student. Every school has students who qualify for Title I, but the numbers aren’t as large, so if you have a school that only has 10%, they don’t need those funds as much as a school that has, say, 75%. So we want the ability to use those funds where we feel they’re most needed. We feel that the best and most effective use of Title I dollars are in schools with large, significant populations of those students.”

Pulse investigator honored Jack Cuccia was brought out of retirement to help identify the victims after the 2016 shooting.

Jack Cuccia received a commemorative coin from the Orange County mayor.

Jack Cuccia had retired from a county position after 35 years and was working part-time at an Ocoee funeral home when he got a call June 12, 2016, from the Orange County Medical Examiner’s office.

There had been a mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub, in downtown Orlando, earlier that morning, and his expertise was needed.

Would he be willing to come out of retirement and temporarily resume his role as medical examiner?

Cuccia had investigated all types of deaths in his decades with the Orange County office, and officials were requesting his services, once again, in the family-assistance department. His job was to help question family members in an attempt to identify the 49 shooting victims.

“You have to know the right questions to ask them and comfort them in any way possible because it’s such a tragedy at that time,” Cuccia said. “It’s very tedious. You don’t tell them that (their) loved one passed, because at that time we didn’t know who was who. …

(I’d say), ‘Tell me a little bit about your loved one.’ ‘Well, he was 5-foot-10 and had a tattoo on his left arm.’”

Every small detail helped identify the bodies.

Cuccia said because he dealt

with the victims’ families, he didn’t have to go to the nightclub.

He asked questions, filled out paperwork and obtained information to be passed to the next team.

In all, it took just 72 hours to match the names to the victims.

Cuccia’s assignment was complete.

“It was a short but very meaningful 72 hours,” he said. “It was an eye-awakening experience, because you meet so many different families, so many different cultures, and you have to meet with each family, with their sensitive needs and their religions and so on. And you have to make sure they feel like the most important person in the room, and you have to do anything possible to help them move on to the next phase of what they have to do for their loved one.”

Cuccia said he was honored to have been called for the assignment.

It was the first of this magnitude, though, he said. While working for the medical examiner’s office, he was assigned to handle the deaths following the February 1998 tornadoes that struck Central Florida, and he was on the office team during the high-profile murder case of 6-year-old Caylee Marie Anthony in 2008.

thanking him for his immediate response.

“By your offer of assistance at the family assistance center and at our office, our office was able to successfully provide the necessary communications with family members,” the letter read. “For that, we will be forever grateful to your contribution.”

And then his life returned to normal, and he continued with his job at DeGusipe Funeral Home and Crematory, in Ocoee.

About a month ago, Cuccia received a package in the mail containing a multicolored-heart quilt.

A card from the Orlando Modern Quilt Guild explained the quilt was made by members of the guild

and/or the international quilting community. More than 1,800 quilts were created with materials donated from 22 countries and all 50 states, and they were given to everyone involved in the Pulse tragedy.

“It was all a surprise, because I (had) received my thank you’s, letters and also a verbal from the mayor and the chief medical examiner and the program manager,” he said.

The package also had a commemorative coin from Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs’ office and a note written by Jacobs.

Jack Cuccia was one of more than 1,800 people involved in the Pulse tragedy who received a multicolored quilt.

“Together with the West Orange Healthcare District, we are investing $100 million to improve and expand healthcare services for West Orange County residents,” said Bernadette Spong, CFO of Orlando Health. “The new (cancer center) will bring a number

of our core cancer-care services to patients right here. The convenience of having chemo or radiation treatments, follow-up appointments and the services of the cancer-support community right in our backyard is something we know our patients value.”

West Orange Healthcare District Board Chair Norma Sutton expressed the district’s delight in partnering with Orlando Health and other organizations in an effort

to bolster the West Orange community into becoming “the healthiest community in the nation.”

“We are very pleased with our collaboration and partnership with Orlando Health’s Health Central, and its success in bringing these incredible, sophisticated health services right here to our community,” Sutton said.

Dr. Mark Roh, president of Orlando Health’s UF Health Cancer Center, said statistically, more than 1,200 residents of West Orange will be diagnosed with cancer this year. He added that the original center was opened across the street in 2012 but reached its expected five-year capacity in two years.

“Since 2014, there’s been more than 21,000 clinic visits, and our teams of doctors and nurses have treated and administered more than 13,000 chemotherapy treatments and over 22,000 radiation treatments,” Roh said. “This new facility is greatly needed, and the best place for it is on this campus, in this community where our patients live and work. In fact, evidence proves that patients who receive their cancer care in their community have better results and outcomes.”

This week marked a new beginning for cancer patients in the West Orange community — and for Orlando Health — as the organization welcomed them into its new cancer center in Ocoee.

Doctors at the 30,000-squarefoot Orlando Health UF Health Cancer Center — Health Central Hospital saw their first patients Monday, Aug. 27, introducing them to the $28 million, cutting-edge facility.

The new center replaces its former location across the street from Health Central’s campus and is nearly double the size. It was funded primarily by a $21 million grant from the West Orange Healthcare District and offers expanded chemotherapy and radiation treatment areas, medical-oncology services, surgical-oncology consultations, laboratory facilities and cancer-support programs.

During the ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday, Aug. 24, Health Central President Mark Marsh reminisced on the last 14 months from groundbreaking to grand opening.

“Certainly none of this would be possible without the strong spirit of partnership and collaboration that runs through this community, and the team at the West Orange Healthcare District is a main driver of that sense of community that we feel here today,” Marsh said, addressing the district.

“Your vision for a healthy community where residents live, work and play is the main stream behind this beautiful new cancer center.”

The center is part of a $100 million expansion to bring necessary health care services to the West Orange community. This includes $75 million in funding from the healthcare district for the cancer center, a 100-bed skilled nursing facility under construction on Health Central’s campus, and a new freestanding emergency department and medical pavilion in Horizon West.

Additionally, the new cancer center is one of only six facilities in the country to treat cancer with MRI-guided radiotherapy using technology called MRIdian,

our West Orange-area residents are among many who spend their days helping make the magic happen at Walt Disney

World.

For some, that entails caring for animals at Animal Kingdom.

For others, it involves any of the numerous roles in the theme parks, from merchandise and retail sales to character attendants or engineering.

But the magic doesn’t always come from the mouse: Sometimes, it comes from a set of hands and a pair of knitting needles.

They are Disney cast members, but they’re also known as the Blanketeers.

BIRTH OF THE BLANKETEERS

Around 2008, there were small pockets of cast members who enjoyed crafting on their lunch hours, said cast member and Winter Garden resident Debbie Weber.

It was around that time the VoluntEARS program — which arranges volunteer activities around the community for cast members to participate in — changed from yellow to white shirts. Some decided to reach out to the crafters to see if they had any use for the old fabric.

As it turned out, the crafters did: They turned the old shirts into crocheted pet beds to donate to local animal shelters and rescues.

With that, they took a page from California’s Disneyland Blanketeers group and created the Walt Disney World Blanketeers.

About 80 Blanketeers contribute on a regular basis, and about 200 total will contribute from time to time or participate in monthly boxing events, where all of the crafts are shipped out to local charities.

Each Blanketeer brings his or her own talent and skill to the table.

Each Blanketeer has his or her own story of involvement with the group. For Horizon West resident Victoria Hamilton, it began last fall when there was a charity request for about 150 baby hats.

“I crocheted forever and my friend was part of the group; when they sent out the call for the caps I said, ‘I can make baby hats,’” Hamilton said. “I ended up making 30 hats or something. I came to the meeting to turn them in and the rest is history. So far this year, I have over 200 volunteer hours (logged). It was the baby hats that got me hooked.”

Weber has been with Walt Disney World for more than 25 years and was one of the original Blanketeers. Intenzo said he got involved when he saw Sabine Jeunette, one of the coordinators of the Walt Disney World Blanketeers, sitting out front crocheting.

“I used to (crochet) years ago but had stopped and she said, ‘Come on Thursday,’” Intenzo said. “I met with her and picked it back up, and that has to be about five years ago.”

There is a special Blanketeers project for just about every organization or charity that requests one, from homeless shelters and military care packages to animal shelters and social workers. Hamilton’s personal favorite projects are the baby hats, which are a good way to use excess yarn from a blanket or square project.

What’s more, Disney rewards its volunteers’ logged hours with grants, which they can donate to a chosen charity.

“I love it — I don't feel as though I have that many opportunities in my life to give back, and I work a full-time gig and it’s difficult to find time to do things where I’m not necessarily stepping away from my family,” Intenzo said.

“I think about it as pay-it-forward,” Hamilton said. “I have joy to make this item and put it out into the world and hope it brings joy to someone else.”

Some are craftier than others and take on the sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting tasks. Others contribute by cutting up material, braiding, tying knots and packing or delivering the finished products.

“We have a group known as corporate citizenship, a group within Team Disney that helps us determine what we can send out to charities,” said Winter Garden resident Albert Intenzo. “We have caps, scarves, blankets, large blankets for families and smaller blankets for infants, booties, shawls and more. They work with charities to determine what they need, but it doesn't always hold us back from creating other things.”

Crafts and projects range from blankets, quilts and cold-weather clothing to pet beds, dog tug toys and pillows. Additionally, Winter Garden resident Kate St. Germain, Weber’s mother, loves creating “walker bags” out of pillowcases for purple martins.

“I’ve been with the company for 14 years ago and my daughter Deb introduced me to VoluntEARS,” St. Germain said. “We've done, because of her interest in animals, the bags for the purple martins research and the surgical masks for the Gorilla Rehab center in Africa. …(And) when I started to do the quilts I thought, ‘Well, when I get to be a little old lady in a nursing home I hope someone gives me a quilt.’”

In 2017 the Walt Disney World Blanketeers produced and distributed more than 8,500 items. Their most recent shipment comprised 21 boxes bound for 15 different organizations; however, Intenzo said, the group has had as many as 40 boxes shipped at a time.

“When we meet, it’s on our lunch or after our shifts,” Intenzo said. “It’s volunteer time, it’s not on the clock, and it’s people giving their own time and sometimes their own materials. We up-cycle as much as we can, so if costuming is changing something out they bring it to us first to repurpose instead of incinerating.”

As of July 26, the group has donated more than 4,300 items this year. It averages about 700 items a month, and the members hope to break last year’s 8,500 mark.

“There’s a pride in know-

ing we’re maintaining skills and increasing the number of people who know how to do these things,” Weber said. “These are wonderful crafting skills we not only get to learn ourselves but then teach others how to do. I think there’s a different quality to something that’s handmade.”

ack in May, when Aaron Anderson was preparing to head to Winter Garden from Flagler College in St. Augustine, there was a sense of excitement that was two fold.

Playing his summer ball for the Winter Garden Squeeze meant that Anderson would play his home games on a field his father — Doug Anderson — once roamed as a West Orange Warrior. In fact, although Aaron Anderson hails from the St. Johns area, both of his parents went to West Orange High, and he still has family in the West Orange area.

Then, of course, there is the underlying reason anyone plays collegiate summer baseball — to get better.

And after a redshirt freshman season at Flagler during which he started slow but picked things up toward the end, Anderson was eager to build upon that momentum.

The Foundation Academy girls volleyball team opened the regular-season with a pair of wins last week, defeating Real Life Christian and Mount Dora Christian each by a score of 3-1.

Anna Grace Williams had a strong week, with 15 kills and 24 digs between the two victories.

Zarina London, a junior middle-hitter for the Ocoee High varsity volleyball team, registered eight kills and played a big role for the Knights in a sweep (25-18, 25-15, 25-17) of the Evans High Trojans Aug. 20. The game was the first of the season for Ocoee, which was defeated by West Orange later in the week and is currently 1-1.

How excited is the team for this new season — and to have opened it with a victory?

I think, based on last season, we were really excited to work harder and execute the plan better than we did last year.

The win (against Evans) was really good — it felt really amazing. It’s sparked something in us to work harder for our next games.

How would you measure success this season?

It doesn’t matter about winning; it’s just about how hard we work for it. Even if we lose, as long as we go down working hard for it. Communication and trusting each other is an important thing we need and something we’ve been working on a lot this year, so I think we’ll be very successful.

How long have you been playing volleyball, and why do you enjoy the game?

I’ve been playing for six years.

I started playing because I moved a lot, so it was easier to get affiliated with where I was at. It’s fun, because it’s a quick-paced game. I like to talk, and you’re forced to talk (on the court).

You run the 400-meter race for the Ocoee track team. Why do you enjoy that event?

It forces you to be strong. I used to run the 100- and 200(meter dashes), but then my coaches realized I had potential to run a longer race. They suggested the 400 and, since then, I’ve loved it.

Do you want to go to college?

I want to go to college, most definitely. I want to be an engineer — probably a civil engineer. I like numbers, and my brother (Lincoln London Jr.) influenced me. He’s in college for civil engineering.

Which teammate is the funniest?

Japhia Robinson. She’s very happy — she doesn’t really get down — and she makes sure that I always have a smile on my face before every game.

Do you have a favorite show on Netflix?

“Orange is the New Black” — it’s so funny and there are a lot of episodes, so I can binge-watch it.

Who has been a role model for you?

My stepmom, Christi McRae. She’s one of those people who is selfless, and she did a lot of stuff for me that she didn’t have to do.

What are some games you are looking forward to?

Senior Night, because our seniors are going away, and I want them to have a good game. Our “Pink Out”

“I played all but one game this past season (at Flagler), and I knew I needed to step up my game if I was going to help us win,” Anderson said. “That was the biggest point to me — that I came back to St. Augustine as a better player.”

Anderson did more than just improve this summer. The rising sophomore first baseman returned to St.Augustine as the most valuable player of the Florida Collegiate Summer League, an honor bestowed by the league’s board of directors Aug. 17.

“It’s a big honor,” Anderson said. “There are a ton of good players in this league.”

Statistically, Anderson was a runaway with the league’s top honor. He had a record-setting .434 batting average this summer — along with a .525 on-base percentage that is the secondhighest in Florida League his-

tory — and had a league-leading 49 hits.

“I had a front-row seat to one of the best seasons I have ever seen,” Squeeze coach Jay Welsh said of Anderson’s summer. “It seemed that whatever the atbat required, Aaron was able to apply the approach to get the job done.”

Anderson thrived in Winter Garden despite it being his first summer baseball experience.

The differences between summer ball and the collegiate or high-school regular seasons are myriad — from the wood bats to the daily games.

“It was a grind at first,” Anderson said. “You just kind of have to find your own personal routine.

Once you found that, it became a lot easier — and it was a lot more enjoyable.”

On the other hand, Anderson said it was fun to forge some lasting friendships.

“The coolest part of the summer is you come in and you don’t

knew it let a win slip through its fingers.

And it may represent a turning point for the program.

“We were there, took the lead and showed that grit — and then it got taken away,” Priest said afterward. “That might be the biggest learning experience of them all — that next time, we’re not going to let that happen. ...

Hopefully that’s the next step in our learning curve.”

Priest and his staff addressed their players after the game while huddled together at Deputy Scott Pine Community Park and utilized the moment to impress the importance of practice.

Each coach pointed out that the team had not had its best week of practice leading up to its opener. That meant the little things that allowed the Bears to squeak out of Horizon West with a win — too many fumbles and a few key miscues on defense — could be traced to a lack of focus on the practice field from Monday through Thursday.

Windermere’s first regularseason game of the 2018 season was no moral victory. It was a lesson. The Wolverines have improved and demonstrated

the ability to be competitive in a varsity football game. The program has progressed to a point where it could have — and should have — won.

But going forward, that means the little things — the details — matter more than they did when the team was losing every game on a running clock.

Windermere has a bye this week, giving the team two weeks of practice before it heads on the road to face University. It remains to be seen whether that game — or any game this season

“I feel like we’re going to be able bounce back,” junior Dylan Palmer said. “We’re going to put in a lot more work just to get that win — the first win for this school. That means a lot to us.”

know nearly anyone,” Anderson said. “Two months later, you’ve developed friendships and relationships that you’re going to carry on. We were a tight-knit group down to the very end.”

Regrettably, the Squeeze missed the playoffs this summer, finishing in last place in the FCSL. The team played strong baseball in the middle of the season but could not overcome a slow start and a slide at season’s end.

Although he would have liked to have participated in the postseason, Anderson did accomplish his main goal — he got better — and he got to do so with family in the stands for most of his games.

“It was definitely cool,” Anderson said. “To have my grandparents in the stands, and my mom and dad there when they could make it down, it was really cool.”

Warriors pummel Titans, reclaim ‘The Fence’ N emea Hall ran for three touchdowns, Sinica Sigler rushed for 138 yards and two scores, and West Orange High’s defense and special teams shined Friday, Aug. 24, as they led the Warriors to a 56-10 season-opening victory over host Olympia in the 16th edition of the “Backyard Bowl” rivalry.

The Warriors (1-0) scored 29 points in the first quarter, and the 56 total points tied for the second most in series history.

West Orange, which won for the first time in the series since 2014 and the sixth overall dating back to 2001, registered 61 points during a win over Olympia in 2002 and the Titans posted 56 in an overtime victory in 2004.

The 46-point margin of victory was also a record for the Backyard Bowl, surpassing West Orange’s 43-point triumph in 2013.

LEGACY RIDES BIG FIRST HALF TO WIN

The Legacy Charter Eagles jumped out to a 20-0 lead at halftime and went on to beat the St. Edwards Pirates 20-7 in their opener.

Jacob Worley accounted for all three touchdowns, throwing touchdown passes to Elijah Stove and Trent Philips and then running for a score at the end of the first half. “(Worley is) our captain,” Legacy head coach Trent Hopper said. “He’s our offensive leader. We go as far as he takes us on the offensive side of the ball. He threw a pretty good deep-ball tonight — very clean — and good receivers caught the ball.”

Of the Eagles’ three scoring drives, two featured Legacy (1-0) scoring on fourth-down conversions. Defensively, the Eagles forced two turnovers and had multiple stops on fourth down.

“I was happy,” Hopper said of his team’s defensive performance. “I was happy with the aggressiveness. They paid attention, listened very well.

They matched the other team’s toughness.”

A year ago, the Foundation Academy football team opened the season with a one-sided 42-3 loss to Tampa’s Cambridge Christian at Walker Field in Winter Garden. This time around, the Lions made the trip west and returned the favor — Foundation Academy earned a 27-9 victory.

Junior quarterback Henry Austad threw for four touchdowns and 201 total yards — good for a quarterback rating of 129.2 — and sophomore Danny Stutsman was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown passes.

“This was a big win for us,” head coach Brad Lord said.

“Cambridge is a playoff team (from 2017), so we get three bonus points — hopefully they will finish strong.”
