Lighting up for Landon

The 12-week program meets at noon Mondays at Health Central, 10000 W. Colonial Drive, Ocoee, and focuses on making one positive change at a time — with an emphasis on activity, nutrition and setting goals. Participants will receive take-home tools for success, online group support and an email education program. Registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 31. Registered nurse Lorrie Kovac has been named Employee of the Year by Florida Senior Living Association. She is the regional director of wellness and resident care at Sonata Senior Living’s 10 Florida communities, including Winter Garden. The ceremony presenter said: “This year’s Employee of the Year is many things rolled into one: a road warrior, a coach, an exceptional nurse and a champion of excellence. If you’ve worked in assisted living in Florida for any length of time, chances are you know her. She has worked as a nurse in assisted living since 2009 and has a reputation of being the quintessential wellness and resident care rock star.”

Talks continue on potential hotel in downtown W.G. Winter Garden residents shared their thoughts regarding a potential boutique hotel downtown. ERIC GUTIERREZ STAFF WRITER

The possibility of a hotel coming to downtown Winter Garden drew many residents into the Winter Garden commission chambers during the Aug. 23 commission meeting. After hearing from some of those residents, city leaders voted

unanimously to move forward with exploring the opportunity of building a hotel in downtown Winter Garden at 8 N. Highland Ave. City Manager Mike Bollhoefer emphasized this is just the beginning of the process and that the developer will still have meet certain criteria for the proposed hotel.
