At the Phillips Grove grand opening Saturday, Aug. 25, True said the technology was a hit with families in attendance.

They were lining up to try it and children were picking out their bedrooms as they “walked through.”

The homes on the virtualreality tour are staged just as they would be in a physical model, down to the decorations, floors and furniture. The Phillips Grove community is Pulte’s first in Central Florida to debut the technology.

“It’s been great — even aside from the opening, it’s a very new community, and Realtors in the area are coming through getting information, and they’ve never seen it before,” True said. “The Realtors take videos of themselves using it to show their clients. They think it’s so cool. The fact that our counterparts in the market and our partners see the value in it shows that we’re on the right track.”

True added he believes the opportunity creates a connection between the consumer and his or her potential home, because it brings their ideas and selected floor plan to life. It’s as close as one can get to physically touring a floor plan, he said.

“It’s a great tool for our sales people to be able to use in the office to show families, and we look forward to what it can do for our business,” True said.

“This could go in so many different directions in the future with the capability of this technology, and it’s exciting to see us go out on this venture.”

Windermere High’s seniors didn’t let a little rain and gray skies put a damper on their tailgate event Friday, Aug. 24.

Rather, the Hawaiian-themed tailgate was moved indoors to the cafeteria.

The next day, the theater students enjoyed some fun in the sun at the Theatre Tailgate. The event was sponsored by the Theatre Boosters, a coalition of parents, guardians and members of the community who support the school’s theater department.

Pulte Homes, homebuilder for Dr. Phillips’ new 229-homesite Phillips Grove community, launched recently its virtualreality tours to give potential buyers an immersive experience when touring and choosing their new homes.

Matthew True, general sales manager for Pulte at Phillips Grove, said there are so many floor plans offered that it isn’t always possible to build a model of every single one. That’s where the magic of VR takes over.

“We have such large lineups of our floor plans that we can’t physically build models of them all, and this is an opportunity for us in the age of technology that really allows you to immerse yourself in a floor plan and walk through it as if you were walking though one of our models,” True said. “You gain an understanding the flow of the floor plan.”

Phillips Grove has 13 home designs ranging from three to seven bedrooms and two-andone-half up to six-and-onehalf bathrooms, with two- or three-car garages. Floor plans range from 2,000 square feet to more than 5,000 square feet.

Upon visiting the sales center, homebuyers can take a selfguided tour using a gaming controller to view the floor plan on a television.

Vet opens new animal clinic

as a veterinarian since 2005 and is now on track to open her own animal hospital — Chain of Lakes Animal Clinic — across from Keene’s Crossing Elementary in mid-September.

Chesanek is a 1997 graduate of West Orange High and also attended Windermere Elementary and Lakeview Middle. She knew she wanted to be a veterinarian from the time she was in elementary school.

“It stuck with me through the day I went to undergrad at University of Florida — I decided my major was going to be animal sciences,” she said. “I knew it was what I wanted to do, and I always loved animals. I’ve always loved it and never thought about doing anything else. My family has a family business, and I’m the only one who doesn’t work there. I just wanted to be a vet.”

Chesanek graduated from UF’s veterinary school in 2005 and began working at another local veterinary clinic. A few years later, she decided she wanted more surgical experience “I went to the SPCA, now called Pet Alliance, and worked there for five years,” she said. “We did a lot of surgeries and helped a lot of pets. I really liked it there: I think sometimes people are unsure … of working as part of a shelter, but I really liked it, and I think we did a lot of great things. I had my kids while I worked there, and then I decided I needed a change and wanted to go back to private practice.”

She has worked in Windermere for the last four-and-onehalf years and decided the time was right to follow her dreams of opening her own clinic.

“My dad’s a business owner, and I’ve always wanted to be one, inspired by him,” she said.

“I always knew I wanted to have something, it was just a matter of when. I thought I’d do it earlier (than this) but with having my kids the time wasn’t quite right earlier. Now my kids are 7 and almost 5, and now is a great time.”

the 2,000-square-foot clinic a year ago, before ground was even broken on the new shopping plaza on Bridgewater Crossings Boulevard. It’s been a long road to get to the present, but she said it has given her time to prepare and coordinate the clinic layout.

“I looked into buying a practice instead of building from the ground up, but it makes it more difficult to formulate your own plan for a place already in existence,” she said. “It gives you a fresh start, being able to start from scratch and pursue your vision.”

Choosing the Horizon West area was strategic. She wanted to be close to her kids’ schools and serve an area in which she has friends, family and neighbors.

The family-oriented neighborhood sealed the deal — plus, the clinic is right next to an elementary school, playground and dog park.

her at another veterinary practice.

“She saved my chihuahua’s life after hours on a Sunday,” Wright said of Chesanek. “My neighbor’s dog attacked him. … She saved his life three-and-a-half years ago, she’s a very good doctor, and I’ve had that respect for her. When she ventured out, I thought we’d make a great team. … We have a genuine love for animals, and we want to share that with the community, because we are also pet owners and pet lovers.”

However, the buildings, originally built in 1960 as a schoolhouse complex, have long been in a state of disrepair and deemed inadequate.

As a result, Windermere town staff hired Winter Park-based Architects Design Group to conduct a spatial needs assessment and master plan concepts needed to visualize what — and how much — it would take to construct new town facilities.

Previous studies considered four potential sites for the new Windermere Municipal complex, but two of those sites have since been dropped from consideration.

The two remaining sites are referred to as Option A-1 and A-2.

Option A-1 refers to the existing site currently housing the facilities, and Option A-2 is a site located on Main Street and Fifth Avenue.

According to a presentation

by Architects Design Group Vice President of Operations Rodney McManus, the town’s current facilities are a combined 8,352 square feet.

However, accounting for the police department’s need for better locker-room facilities, evidence-processing areas, employee break room, sally port, intake facilities, records departments, as well as security, storage and parking needs by the year 2027, the space needed for the complex increases to 15,000 square feet — assuming full-time staff increases to 29 employees.

Option A-1 includes a new onestory town administration/police facility and a new one-story public works facility at the existing location. According to McManus, it would probably cost about $6.94 million, which increased from the estimated $4.09 million quoted in a 2017 study. The new figure is also based on predicted spatial needs by 2037, which is 15,505 square feet.

Meanwhile, option A-2, which

includes a new one-story administration/police facility at the Fifth Avenue site and a new onestory facility for the Public Works Department at the existing location, would cost about $6.43 million.

The five residents who spoke during public comment were all in favor of the project but expected others might be against the project’s expensive price tag.

“I am all in favor of a new facility as long as it’s fiscally responsible on your part, and I would entrust you to do that,” Karen Faye said. “I’m assuming the $4.2 million that’s now over $6 million is probably going to be a hard pill to swallow.”

At this point, the general council consensus is to move forward on a conceptual design and renderings for the A-1 site. However, Windermere resident Bill Martini asked the council to consider another site as well, given the expected opposition that could result from the idea of tearing down the 1960 schoolhouse.

One of the things I find really important is not to make the vet visit so stressful, because a lot of times pets are really scared and I’m trying to emphasize that it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s our goal to be that family doctor, but just for the four-legged ones.

“I’m just proud to create something and proud to show my kids that … you can follow your dream and do what you want to do,” she said. “If you want to be the boss you just have to try and work hard. Its been a process, but it’s possible.”

deserve professional accommodations,” Martini said. “We count on them to be there for us, so we should be there for them. … If we’re considering tearing (the schoolhouse) down and building new facilities there, there’s going to be a huge outcry of opposition. I think it’s probably the best place to put it, but if we’re still considering other sites, I wonder if you guys would consider the site where the tennis courts are right now. It’s centrally located ... the town already owns the site, and the tennis courts themselves are, roughly, about 10,000 square feet of footage, so there would be minimal demolition and discomfort for town residents.”

Windermere resident Theresa Myers expressed concern at the thought of demolishing the schoolhouse. She suggested the council consider upgrading the existing building instead.

Town Manager Robert Smith informed the council the conceptual designs would cost about $10,000, and he expects a draft to take about one to two months.

Orange County commissioners approved preliminary subdivision plans to construct 709 homes and a 147,637 square-foot storage facility in Horizon West.

Orange County commissioners unanimously approved the preliminary subdivision plan for two Horizon West projects during the Aug. 21 County Commission meeting.

County leaders first approved the Waterleigh Phase 3 preliminary subdivision plan, which pertains to a 355.02-acre tract located west of Avalon Road and south of Old YMCA Road.

The applicant requested to subdivide the property to build 709 single-family attached and detached homes, in addition to requesting two waivers from the Orange County Code. The first requested waiver is to allow the lots to front a mew — which is a park, open space or similar space — instead of a dedicated public, paved street. The second waiver request is to allow lots that are more than 50 feet wide that face neighborhood squares to be front loaded instead of access from a rear alley or rear garage, according to the agenda.

Commissioners then approved the preliminary subdivision plan for a 147,637-square-foot self-storage facility in the Hamlin Planned Development. The subject property for the storage facility is 7.13 gross acres and is generally located west of Hamlin Groves Trail and south of New Independence Parkway.

The official name of the project is the Hamlin PD/Hamlin Self Storage & Infrastructure for lots 2A and 2B PSP, County Planning Administrator John Smoger said.

“The proposal is to create two lots consisting of a 147,637-square-foot self-storage facility on lot 2A and infrastructure improvements for lots 2A and 2B,” Smoger said.

Scott Gentry, of Kelly, Collins & Gentry Inc., is the applicant for the project. He said the project is

consistent with the “town center area” of Horizon West.

“Town Center is the commercial area for Horizon West, so not only do we have residential uses in there — we have multi-family, we have single family — but we have a multitude of commercial (uses),” Gentry said. “This is a low-traffic use. There’s not a lot of people here. There’s not a lot of noise. Obviously, people aren’t having parties or outdoor (events) like with restaurants.”

David Russell is a resident of The Cove at Hamlin. He spoke against the project because he thought that residents needed time to learn about it.

“I’m speaking today to request the BCC (Board of County Commissioners) to please defer, delay or table this request until more data and information can be shared with local residents as to why this is the only location for such a facility,” Russell said.

District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey said the community meetings in which residents learn about — and comment on — the project have passed and that there’s little the public can influence during preliminary subdivision plan meetings.

“It is my policy not to do public hearings for the preliminary subdivision plan phase of a development, because there’s, really, very little the public can change at that point in time,” VanderLey said.

The names are familiar, but the titles have changed.

Longtime local leaders Jerry Demings and Teresa Jacobs will continue to represent constituents Orange County — but in different capacities.

Demings, former Orange County sheriff, will succeed Jacobs as the next Orange County mayor.

Jacobs will remain in the spotlight, though, as chair of the Orange County School Board.

Both candidates won their respective races handily. Demings won 113,261 votes (61.6%%), easily besting challengers Pete Clarke, who received 40,468 votes (22.01%), and Rob Panepinto, who earned 30,148 votes (16.4%).

Similarly, Jacobs emerged from a field a four with 94,546 votes (52.25%). That total was enough to boost her over challengers Matthew Fitzpatrick, 30,190 votes (16.69%); Robert Prater, 9,651 votes (5.33%); and Nancy Robbinson, 46,546 votes (25.73%).

From his watch party Aug. 28 at the Florida Hotel and Conference Center’s Heroes Ballroom, Demings said he was ready to begin work as Orange County’s next mayor.

“I promise to put the people first over politics as we continue to make Orange County a great place to live, work and do business,” he said. “I am excited about our future, and I’m ready to get to work as your mayor.

“To the voters, thank you,” Demings said. “I owe you a debt of gratitude for entrusting me to be the fifth elected mayor of Orange County. My victory tonight speaks volumes of just how far this community has come. The son of a maid and a taxicab driver has been elected. I hope that this inspires every boy or a girl, because if you work hard and you play by the rules, you can become whoever you dream to be.”

In her victory speech Aug. 28 at MetroWest Golf Club, Jacobs vowed this was just the beginning of her influence in local public education. She noted school safety

and teachers as priorities.

“Those teachers are so, incredibly important, and we as a society have forgotten that,” she said.

“We’ve forgotten to pay them for the important job that they do, and we’ve got to do better. It ought to be (that you) proudly serve as a teacher. And you ought to be able to make a living and support your family doing that.

“So, that’s a job bigger than just Orange County Public Schools,” Jacobs said. “That’s a statewide challenge, but we’ve all got … to tackle that challenge together. The one thing I know about Orange County — unlike any place else I’ve ever lived — when we put our minds to something, when we put aside our differences and we agree on the direction we’re going, we are unstoppable.”

In addition to these two races, Orange County voters delivered a landslide victory for Orange County Public Schools as they passed the ad-valorem millage with 152,881 votes (83.55%).

COUNTY COMMISSION DISTRICT 2

With no one in the field of four earning more than 50% of the vote, the race for Orange County Commission District 2 will continue to the Nov. 6 General Election.

Voters will choose between candidates Patricia Rumph, 9,698 votes (30.09%) and Christine Moore, 9,181 votes (28.48%), the top two candidates in the primary.

Candidate Fred Brummer received 7,599 votes (23.57%), and Mark Byrd received 5,757 votes (17.86%).

SCHOOL BOARD DISTRICT 7

Similarly, the race for Orange County School Board District 7 also will continue to November, when voters will select between the top two candidates, Melissa Mitchell Byrd, 12,360 votes (45.34%) and Eric Schwalbach, 6,259 votes (22.96%).

Primary candidate ChanDenise Budhoo received 6,140 votes (22.52%), while Jeffrey Richardson received 2,501 votes (9.17%).

Flynn: “There are legislators on the federal and state level who feel that the funds should follow the individual child. ... Every school has students who qualify for Title I, but the numbers aren’t as large, so if you have a school that only has 10%, they don’t need those funds as much as a school that has, say, 75%. So we want the ability to use those funds where we feel they’re most needed.”

They didn’t do that for local governments, but they did it for schools. So we would have preferred if they had at least left it like it was.”

Orange County School Board members agreed recently on their 2019 legislative platform — a list of issues regarding public education of which they wish to direct the district’s advocacy efforts.

The consensus came during the Aug. 21 Orange County School Board meeting, but the platform was written based on a review of the 2018 Legislative Session and input from board members, district staff and teachers.

“The goal is to have a platform that represents the board and includes the issues that we feel are the most important for us to advocate,” said District 2 School Board member Darryl Flynn, who chairs the school board’s legislative committee.

Flynn provided an explanation and context to some of the priorities targeted by the School Board this year.

Apply the same accountability system for all educational entities directly or indirectly receiving state tax dollars.

Flynn: “There are students who are eligible for these vouchers that are administered by Step Up For Students, and they can take these vouchers and go to a private school. ... And a lot, not all, but a lot of private schools accept state vouchers, but they don’t have any accountability, they’re not required to administer the FSA, and they don’t get graded. Charter schools do get graded the same way as traditional public schools, though, so it’s mainly about those vouchers. That’s what we mean by accountability.”

Monica Emery is ready for her first full year as principal at Gotha Middle School.

She was appointed to Gotha during the second half of the 201718 school year — right before state testing began. The school year ended strong, she said, and teachers and staff were encouraged

by Gotha’s report card, Orange County Public Schools’ new system of rating schools.

She is hoping to maintain that positive atmosphere this year.

“The morale went up, and we’re having a good time,” Emery said.

She hopes the community won’t dwell on the recent state-issued C grade — Gotha’s grade was an A for 20 years and a B last year — but will concentrate, instead, on the good things happening at the school.

“We’re going to build a morale where everyone wants to be here teaching and learning,” Emery said. “We’ve got high hopes for 2018-19.”

What sets Gotha Middle apart from other schools is its rich arts program, she said.

“Every fine-arts course we can have, we have,” she said. “We’ve built it over time based on what the community wants us to have. A lot of the students in the area try to go to Howard Middle, which is a finearts magnet, so we try to make sure those kids stay with us.”

Emery has been with OCPS since 2012 and was an Osceola County Public Schools assistant principal before that.

This is actually a return to Gotha Middle for Emery. She was the assistant principal before leaving four years ago to take a position at the OCPS district office as director of secondary curriculum and instruction.

“This year, we’re focusing, after safety and security, on standardbased instruction, culturally responsible teaching and learning and building a culture of literacy,” Emery said.

school, she decided it needed some positive press, so she hired a former Gotha Middle English teacher to handle the school’s public relations. The staff started creating Fun Friday videos, and students could view them on GTV at Gotha on YouTube. They performed a lip-dub video with the whole school, and students and staff were eager to make another one.

At the end of the 2017-18 school year, Emery danced atop the Gotha Middle marquee, lip-syncing to Panic! At The Disco’s “High Hopes” to get the video started.

The video concluded with a challenge to Bridgewater Middle School and Principal Andrew Jackson. Other schools in the West Learning Area have been motivated to create a video now, she said.

Strike a pose Victoria Jimenez, a junior at Olympia High School, is no stranger to the runway and demands of the modeling industry.

rowing up, Victoria Jimenez, 16, always was encouraged to model by friends and strangers who would comment on her looks and height.

Being of Mexican, Native American and Spanish descent has given her an exotic look and height that fashion and commercial photographers seek in potential models.

During a family photo shoot a few years ago, she and her mother, Erika, finally decided to give modeling a try when the photographer requested to pass on their contact information to a modeling agency.

“We actually were just taking family pictures with this photographer, and then the photographer said she knew this agency that is looking for models and (Victoria) would be perfect for that agency because of her height,” Erika said.

Three years later, Victoria, now 5 feet, 8 inches tall (thanks to her father) is still modeling and frequently works photo shoots for commercial and fashion photographers. She has since learned to study a photographer’s portfolio before going in front of the camera, she said.

“The most challenging part is figuring out what the photographer wants or what the audience wants,” Victoria said. “Before going up on the runway or in front of a camera, you have to study the photographer and look through their past work to see what type of modeling they want. So before going to a shoot, I always look at the previous work on Instagram. But they’re also always looking for something new and fresh, so it’s also good to create new poses.”

She is, as she said, in love with her job, and hopes to one day model for Sherri Hill — a fashion designer who specializes in elegant gowns and pageant dresses often worn by television and movie stars at redcarpet events.

But for now, she is modeling on a freelance basis and goes to about two to three photo shoots a week.

She values her mom’s support, as it helps her focus on school.

“I have the help of my ‘momager’ — that’s what I call her,” Victoria said with a laugh. “She manages everything. She sets up the appointments. She talks with the different photographers that contact us, and she helps a lot with managing the whole modeling thing while I do homework and study for tests.”

Victoria said her primary focus is school, because she dreams of becoming a veterinarian to help animals — a goal her family suspects she developed while helping manage her family’s animal-rescue farm in their backyard.

She has been known to use the money she earns from her gigs to help her family with rehabilitation costs for the animals, because many come in sick from owners who neglected them.

“What I admire about her is that if a teenager comes into $700, as she did with her photo shoot for Universal, they’re likely thinking about getting new shoes, a new phone, new clothes,” David Jimenez, Victoria’s dad, said. “But when she got it, the first thing she said was, ‘Oh, I get to buy you all Christmas gifts.’ And she did. She also used the money to help rescue two goats named Alfie and Elsa.

plish all her goals — despite the pressures of the modeling industry. She uses famous quotes from Coco Chanel about elegance and modesty as her inspiration and admires Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima for her ability to stick to her morals and beliefs.

“I just go up there and have fun,” Victoria said. “I’m not trying to impress anybody or change who I am. Like Adriana Lima, she’s Catholic, and she brings her Bible behind the stage and reads it before going onstage. She holds on to what she believes and never changed for the industry. So when I go behind the camera or onstage, I stay true to myself. A lot of people tell me you have to change for the industry and act a certain way, but I’m going to stay the way I am. If they want me, they will understand my beliefs.

And if not, then I just I won’t do it.”

s Fred Priest addressed his football team after its 30-27 loss to Cypress Creek to open the regular season, he noticed something he hadn’t seen before — something he liked.

The Windermere Wolverines played their first season in 2017, going 0-10 in a campaign that included no competitive games.

In fact, before the team’s threepoint loss to the Bears Aug. 24, the only competitive game it had was its spring game in May — a 41-21 loss to Holy Trinity (Melbourne).

But following that game in May, Priest — who took over the team in December — didn’t notice a lot of disappointment from his team.

It seemed that after the team failed to score a touchdown in 2017, the Wolverines were content

It was a bit of a prototypical “moral victory” — and understandably so.

But after the team’s loss to Cypress Creek, in a game where it had rallied from a 24-7 deficit to take a 27-24 lead in the fourth quarter, Priest saw a different postgame demeanor from his student-athletes.

He saw hurt in his players’ eyes — a hurt that meant the Wolverines were not content to simply be competitive or to score a few touchdowns. It was the kind of hurtful look from a team that knew it let a win slip through its fingers.

And it may represent a turning point for the program.

“We were there, took the lead and showed that grit — and then it got taken away,” Priest said afterward. “That might be the biggest learning experience of them all — that next time, we’re not going to let that happen. ...

Hopefully that’s the next step in our learning curve.”

Priest and his staff addressed their players after the game while huddled together at Deputy Scott Pine Community Park and utilized the moment to impress the importance of practice.

Each coach pointed out that the team had not had its best week of practice leading up to its opener. That meant the little things that allowed the

Romig had a strong summer of travel ball for Power Baseball and is excited to help lead the Wolverines back to the playoffs next spring.

How excited are you to have committed to a collegiate program?

Going into the summer before senior year, and not really getting many looks, you think about, “Is it going to be my last year playing baseball?” So, finding a school not only do I really like, but the program and the school itself is amazing.

How well did you do in travel ball this summer?

We did the national tournaments in Georgia, and I think I definitely played nearly at my best, if not at my best.

What’s been your favorite out-of-state destination for travel ball?

I think LakePoint (Sporting Community) in Emerson, Georgia. Not only is it a very nice sports complex, but (also) you get to see kids and coaches from all around the country.

What was it like being part of a new program last spring?

It was kind of difficult at first, because all the kids coming together, most of us had never played on the same team. But I think we handled it really well, and our junior class had to handle it as a senior class — and I think we handled it really well.

What’s your favorite uniform combo for the Wolverines?

I like the lime green, “poison” jersey and the navy, stirrup pants with our white hat.

definitely inspired when she got to college — it really made me want to get to college, just like she did. She said it’s really fun up there.

What’s your favorite subject in school?

Math — I’ve always been good with numbers as a kid. My mom likes telling the story that when I was 4 or 5, and she would read me books, I would just want to read through the numbers of the pages and not read the words.

Tell us about your interest in golf.

Golf is a big hobby of mine. My favorite course around here is Panther Lake at Orange County National — it’s pretty close to a pro course. Very underrated.

And I would say my favorite golfer is Rory McElroy.

He’s a small guy, like me, and he can hit the ball pretty far.

What’s the team’s biggest strength?

The pitching staff, for sure.

We have (commits) to FSU, UCF and a lot of good arms. I think it’s going to definitely lead us to more wins this year.

You have a sister, Kalie Romig, who plays college softball for Ave Maria University.

Bears to squeak out of Horizon West with a win — too many fumbles and a few key miscues on defense — could be traced to a lack of focus on the practice field from Monday through Thursday.

Windermere’s first regularseason game of the 2018 season was no moral victory. It was a lesson. The Wolverines have improved and demonstrated the ability to be competitive in a varsity football game. The program has progressed to a point where it could have — and should have — won.

But going forward, that means the little things — the details — matter more than they did when the team was losing every game on a running clock.

Windermere has a bye this week, giving the team two weeks of practice before it heads on the road to face University. It remains to be seen whether that game — or any game this season — will be the game where the Wolverines earn Win No. 1.

But after the opener, it’s a good bet the Wolverines better understand the process to winning and that it is a process that almost always starts in practice on Mondays — not at kickoff on Fridays.

“I feel like we’re going to be able bounce back,” junior Dylan Palmer said. “We’re going to put in a lot more work just to get that win — the first win for this school. That means a lot to us.”

For this fall, Serpa’s squad added Angeline Bergner and Arianna Bergner — talented sand-volleyball players who came out for the indoor team — as well as a pair of dynamic eighth-graders in Julia Kane and Danielle Work.

Including its preseason match, Windermere Prep (2-0) has won nine of the first 10 sets

it has played this fall. The Lakers have games against Foundation Academy (Aug. 28), Jones (Sept. 4) and Lake Nona (Sept.

5) before settling into district play with matches against Lake Highland Prep (Sept. 11) and The First Academy (Sept. 13).

Windermere Prep competes in a brutal district — in addition to the Highlanders and Royals, there is also Trinity Prep and Montverde Academy.

But, buoyed from their strong start, the Lakers are optimistic they can compete with anyone this fall.

“This is a completely different team from last year and the year before,” Bernardes said.

In addition to settling that score, these teams have similarities in that both have new coaching staffs, making this game a good measuring stick for each respective program.

TIMBER CREEK (0-1) AT DR. PHILLIPS (0-1) If Week One went rough for the Panthers, who were soundly defeated by Lee County in Georgia, it went worse for Timber Creek. The Wolves were defeated 48-0

by Oviedo. What’s more, for a Dr. Phillips offense that has struggled to find traction the past two weeks, including the preseason, it will get to face off against a Timber Creek defense that gave up 300 yards on the ground last week.

EAGLE’S VIEW (1-0) AT WINDERMERE PREP (1-0), 4:30 P.M. The Lakers’ second opponent isn’t quite from across the country, but the drive to Horizon West from Jacksonville isn’t exactly short, either. That’s the drive Eagle’s View will make, fresh off of a 49-0 victory over Warner Christian in Week One. Windermere Prep will look to lean on a defense that has been stout in the preseason and through one regular-season game, allowing just two points between those two contests.

The Windermere Prep football team opened the season with a 28-2 win over California’s Lakewood Lancers.

Interstate showdowns headline Week One action I t took a little longer than usual — nearly 20 hours after the game originally kicked off — but the Windermere Prep Lakers (1-0) opened the regular season with a 28-2 win over the visiting Lakewood Lancers from California.

The game ended just after noon Aug. 24 after kicking off the day before around 5 p.m.

A pair of weather delays and a lack of lights for the Lakers’ on-campus facility meant the game would have to be resumed the next morning during school hours — or else risk sending the West Coast visitors home without a complete game.

“That was unprecedented for us,” Windermere Prep head coach Jacob Doss said. “We played during the school day, and I had to call our administration to get a game at 10 a.m. (Friday) approved. … We looked up in the stands, and all of a sudden the entire school was out. It was a very unique atmosphere.”

The game itself saw senior receiver Khadry Jackson rush for two touchdowns and senior quarterback Kai Patterson throw for 200 yards and one

touchdown. The Lakers led 21-0 at halftime.

On defense, Mason Russell had a game-high nine tackles, helping to key an effort that kept the Lancers out of the end zone.

“The defense, they just played their hearts out,” Doss said. “I was so proud of our defense.”

Doss praised the skill and size of the visitors from California.

“They play very good football out there,” Doss said. “They’re well-coached and physical. It was probably the biggest team, in terms of size, that we’d ever played against.”

He also spoke highly of KSA Events, which put together the game.

“KSA does an amazing job of hosting teams,” Doss said.

“We were the host team, and also the host site, but KSA did the event stuff and they were great.”

defense. The Panthers forced and recovered three fumbles in the first quarter, but scored only three points from the opportunities the turnovers created.

As it turns out, those would be the only three points Dr. Phillips (0-1) scored Aug. 25, as the Panthers were outscored 35-0 the rest of the way and lost 35-5.

Positives for Dr. Phillips included a team-best 17 tackles and a fumble recovery by Stephen Dix, as well as 11 tackles for T.J. Young.

A year ago, the Foundation Academy football team opened the season with a one-sided

42-3 loss to Tampa’s Cambridge Christian at Walker Field in Winter Garden. This time around, the Lions made the trip west and returned the favor — Foundation Academy (1-0) earned a 27-9 victory.

Junior quarterback Henry Austad threw for four touchdowns and 201 total yards — good for a quarterback rating of 129.2 — and sophomore Danny Stutsman was on the receiving end of two of those touchdown passes.

“This was a big win for us,” head coach Brad Lord said.

“Cambridge is a playoff team (from 2017), so we get three bonus points — hopefully, they will finish strong.”
