The Oakland Town Commission on Aug. 14 approved two agreements that will have a big impact on the Oakland Park development’s commencement of construction in the town limits of Oakland.

Oakland Park lies within the jurisdictions of Oakland and Winter Garden, and the homes currently built in the neighborhood are all within the Winter Garden limits.

Why do you want to represent District 7?

As a veteran teacher, the reason I decided to run is because I am passionate about education and impacting the lives of all students so that they can excel academically and become productive members of society. I have been a public servant and educator for (more than) a decade, working hard to help our children in reading, writing, math, science and social studies. I have worked in some of the most challenging Title I schools helping the students who need it the most, starting at Carver Middle School in 2006. I understand the frustrations of educators, and I will be a voice of reason and change fighting on their behalf.

Why do you want to represent District 7?

As a parent, I navigated District 7 schools with my children for more than a decade and share the frustrations expressed to me by parents repeatedly. As an educator, I was heartbroken when teachers told me I should not go back into the classroom because of the environment. I made the decision to work to improve our schools using my unique perspective and skills. Frankly, our schools in District 7 need to be better. Fewer than 10% of our district schools are A-rated, but 30% of schools districtwide are.

If elected, what would your priorities be?

I intend to focus on school safety, student achievement, retaining highly qualified teachers and community involvement.

I am a firm believer and endorser of the arts, technical programs and athletic programs.

These programs give students a sense of hope and motivate them to use their talents and skills to share with the world. ... I would like to see OCPS take a more proactive approach securing the infrastructure and perimeter of the schools. In addition, hiring more resource officers and working closely with our local law-enforcement officers.

If elected, what would your priorities be?

First, improve the classroom environment, pushing for the proper enforcement to change disruptive and dangerous behaviors, giving our kids a productive and safe learning environment. Second, increase communication and transparency with regular community meetings, a designated and anonymous phone line for teachers, a community advisory council and regular home visits with families. Third, bring more educational opportunities to District 7, such as innovative magnets and vocational schools. Finally, advocate for our teachers. We lose teachers at an alarming rate, and morale is low. We must work together on solutions to fix the problems that are plaguing our teachers.

What measures should the district take to retain high-quality teachers?

We should give teachers raises and bigger retention bonuses. If OCPS cannot provide raises, they should be able to provide toll and gas stipends to teachers who live far from their work location, in addition to free school lunch. The administration at every school should make it a priority to ensure the morale of their teachers (is) high and their teachers feel appreciated.

What measures should the district take to retain high-quality teachers?

The first step is to improve the working environment for our teachers. One of the biggest issues for teachers is the evaluation system currently being used. It is belittling ... and difficult to navigate. ... Finally, they want to have someone listen to their concerns and acting. Until we start treating our teachers with the respect they deserve, we will continue to see good teachers quit or retire early.

What is your opinion on standardized testing? Should students’ test scores impact teacher evaluations?

This is an unfortunate problem where students’ test scores affect the teacher’s evaluations, job security and potential raises.

Each student is not equally endowed with the ability to perform at grade level. Therefore, most teachers would like to see growth from certain students and proficiency from others. ... It’s very upsetting to know you can work the entire year teaching your heart out and if “Johnny” fails that test, your job, raise and evaluation are in jeopardy.

What is your opinion on standardized testing? Should students’ test scores impact teacher evaluations?

I’ve dried the tears of my children during testing season as so many parents have.

It’s horrible — the stress we put on these children, particularly in elementary school.

Although some tests are state mandated, some are put forth by OCPS and need to end immediately. Student test scores should never impact the evaluations or pay of our teachers.

Too many factors can affect how a student tests on one day to allow that score to affect something as important as a teacher’s wage.

Why do you want to represent District 7?

To keep politicians away from our children. I started teaching in 1996 with yearround schools and chalkboards. I have taught at elementary and middle schools in both Ocoee and Winter Garden while coaching sports at West Orange and Ocoee high schools. I have worked with all socioeconomic income levels and taught our highest- and lowest-performing students. ...

Politicians have forgotten what education is all about. Teaching to a test and manipulating data is causing our children to suffer. ... Let’s build healthy, productive income-producing citizens who are lifelong learners — not students who only know how to take standardized tests.

If elected, what would your priorities be?

School safety is No. 1. Making sure we have a licensed, armed professional protecting our most valuable resources is mandatory. “See something, say something, do something” will be mandatory in my district.

Identify and help our at-risk youth is second (using high-school mentors and tutors who need Bright Futures community-service hours to help struggling students is an obvious solution).

Give teachers back their time and stop the unnecessary paperwork and mandates that are not helping our children learn. Efficient use of time and resources will be the key.

What measures should the district take to retain high-quality teachers?

Give them back their planning time. Cut back on work that is not directly helping struggling students. Pay them a living wage.

What is your opinion on standardized testing? Should students’ test scores impact teacher evaluations?

It cannot be used to evaluate or pay teachers. This was a failed experiment based on a false narrative. Most teachers have been getting evaluated and paid based on test scores for children and subjects they do not even teach. So they create more tests for kids to take and waste 20% of the year testing instead of learning. ... We have to listen to teachers and tell the state what they are saying to stop the teacher-shortage crisis. We are losing teachers faster than we are replacing them, and kids are not going into college for education.

of Winter Garden. The original agreement was approved in 2006.

The amendment includes provisions for sewer and reuse water services to come to the Oakland portion of Oakland Park. The city is providing the services, and the town will handle the billing.

The developer, Crescent Communities, will design, permit and construct the master sanitary sewer system to support the development of the Oakland property to the standards and requirements of the city and its Code of Ordinances.

It also outlines details concerning the development of Motomassek Road. Winter Garden will contribute $250,000 toward the construction of the road, which is the southerly extension of Winters Landing Drive from West Oakland Avenue to West Colonial Drive. Winter Garden officials saw a need for another northsouth corridor to be developed from Oakland Avenue to Colonial so they have agreed to contribute toward its construction.

The amendment to the development agreement between the town of Oakland and Crescent Communities, includes the Motomassek agreement plus stipulations on upgrades for Starr Street.

Per the agreement, Crescent will design, permit and construct a “rural” pavement section on Starr, from Vandermeer Avenue to Oakland Avenue. This work will be limited to regrading the existing surface and swales and overlaying with one inch of asphalt.

These improvements must be completed by Dec. 31, 2023, or by the 175th certificate of occupancy issued in Oakland Park, whichever comes first.

n The commission voted on the official name for the town’s future art center: The Arts and Heritage Center at the Town of Oakland. Mayor Kathy Stark said the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is starting a capital campaign and will include Oakland’s new center in the fundraising.

The WGHF also has agreed to store the historic items and help the town with its exhibits. The groundbreaking is expected to take place in a few weeks. n The commission approved the first reading of an ordinance that presents a new Code of Ordinances for the town. Officials have been working with MuniCode for several years to update and amend the codes. Residents can view the final product online at municode.org. n The town extended the two-year contract for building permitting and inspection services with PDCS Inc. ANNEXATION

A first reading and public hearing was held for the proposed annexation of 11.6 acres of property, located at 17920 and 17812 W. Colonial Drive, on the LakeOrange county border and owned

by Gary M. and Dana D. English.

The parcel is being annexed from unincorporated Orange County into the town of Oakland, and the applicant, LIV Development LLC, plans to build a housing development.

Mayor Kathy Stark said the request comes in under the current gateway-corridor development moratorium — declared in February and recently extended until December — and is subject to the new overlay rules.

Residents who live near the property questioned the zoning and also asked about guidelines for access to Johns Lake from the southernmost piece of land, which fronts the lake.

Stark emphasized that this is merely an annexation and not a rezoning. In Orange County, the property was zoned rural.

“We just thought of what we could do to help her,” Cavinder said. “We all try to help each other out any way we can.”

That employee is Emily Lowing. She recently left her job after working at Paws & Play for about two years. She moved Aug. 13 back to Michigan to stay with her family during her ongoing treatment and recovery, Cavinder said.

Lowing has autoimmune hepatitis, a liver inflammation that occurs when the body’s immune system attacks the organ.

“Unfortunately, the liver damage for me has gotten worse and has turned to cirrhosis,” Lowing said. “There are times, especially if I have a cold or something, where it flares up and causes severe abdominal pain and my liver does not function properly. Instead of filtering out toxins, they go into my blood and mess with my enzyme levels, which causes my body to basically shut down.”

The ongoing treatment means Lowing will be in and out of hospitals — sometimes for two weeks at a time — making it difficult for her to work and live a normal life. The only way she could get better is with a full

The Windermere Wolverines’ first home game against the West Orange Warriors was certainly one to remember.

The rain cleared just in time for fans to pack the stands at — and the roads around — Deputy Scott Pine Community Park Friday, Aug. 17. The Wolverines scored their first touchdown of the season, putting them on the scoreboard, and fans went wild. Additionally, Windermere fans got to show off their new, eight-acre football stadium.

Everyone was excited, but with anything new comes a learning curve. The 200 on-site parking spaces and overflow lot filled up more than an hour before kickoff, and many fans either sat in their cars or on a shuttle bus to the sta-

dium in heavy traffic.

“Some people are going to be frustrated with riding on the bus and the traffic situation, but the truth is I’ve sat in longer lines trying to get into the Amway Center in downtown Orlando,” said District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey. “Any time you get an event that draws a lot of people, you’re going to have traffic that goes with it. Obviously, there’s going to be some kinks that have to be worked out, and we’ll work with our partners at Orange County Public Schools to make sure that it runs smoothly.

But given kind of a first blush and what I’ve seen so far, it’s kind of exceeding expectations. I thought it would be a lot tougher.”

“Whenever you try to get as many people in at one time as you’re doing here, you’re going to have traffic congestion,” Demings said. “For years, I managed the special operations for the law-enforcement response at the Citrus Bowl, and … that’s a major event with hundreds of lawenforcement officers working, and you still have traffic. This is what happens when you have a major gathering like this.”

Another challenge faced by school and county leaders and fans was the amount of seating in the stadium. Many fans had to stand along the sides of the stadium because the seating areas were filled. Band members, cheerleaders and dancers all stood on the track throughout the game. And a lack of space made it impractical for the West Orange marching

Lowing is on a waiting list with more than 350 other people who are in need of a liver transplant, according to the GoFundMe page set up on her behalf.

In the time that Lowing worked at Paws & Play, she grew a strong bond with her co-workers and even considers some of them her best friends.

“I was speechless,” Lowing said of learning about the GoFundMe page. “I’ve had a few friends mention the idea, but I always said I was fine and would make things work and do it on my own. … When he (Cavinder) reached out to me, I was shocked. I have never had a boss that cared so much about their employees. He said I am family to him and he wants to do anything he can to help me get better.”

In addition to creating the GoFundMe, Paws & Play also donated $1,000 to the page.

“Hopefully, the community will help us support her,” Cavinder said.

“The challenge is going to be seating in the stadium, and we knew that,” VanderLey said. “We deferred to OCPS in terms of what their typical package is for a stadium and stadium seating for a new high school. We don’t do stadiums, so we had to count on them to tell us what they need.”

Other issues included procedures in the case of a lightning delay or thunderstorm and lack of shelter. The typical procedure for a lightning delay is to stop the game and evacuate a stadium if there is a lightning strike within a five-mile radius. In Windermere’s case, the radius was increased to 20 miles to have more time to evacuate attendees.

“No one is ignoring this, and no one is naïve enough to think that this doesn’t come with some problems, but to the extent that we can plan, we are; to the extent that we have funding to address things, we are,” VanderLey said.

Friends and family remember Tyler Felt The 26-year-old played football while at Ocoee High and more recently played softball and kickball in West Orange.

If you asked Tyler Felt’s family and friends what he was known for, there wouldn’t be just a single answer. His loved ones recall his open friendliness, contagious smile, endless generosity, happygo-lucky attitude, hard-working nature and his penchant for linedancing backward at Cowboy’s.

His humor, wit and charm captivated those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He had a goofy demeanor that attracted many, many friends — all of whom have suffered a great loss with his recent passing.

Tyler died Aug. 8 as a result of injuries sustained from a vehicle accident. He was 26 years old. On the day of his funeral, Aug. 14, more than 400 people gathered to mourn his death. To his sisters, the support was overwhelmingly heartwarming.

“We actually had about 250 memorial cards printed for that morning, and we ran out before (some) people got a chance to come in,” Tyler’s younger sister, Becca Dotson, said. “We had to get another 200 printed for the night so we would have some that night.”

“He had a lot of different types of friends from different areas of his life, and not all of them knew each other,” Tyler’s older sister, Sarah

Felt, said. “These people that came and that were supporting him and that were showing up and mourning him weren’t like acquaintances — he genuinely had relationships with all of these people. … They loved him.”

The love Tyler’s friends have for him has brought many of them together to support his family.

His friends created a hashtag in his honor — #FeltStrong — which has been made into shirts, wristbands, decal stickers and cups and has been used as the namesake for various fundraising events in his honor.

One of those events will be the #FeltStrong Fundraiser Men’s & Coed Softball Tournament at 8 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, at Braddock Park, 13460 Lake Butler Blvd.

All proceeds from the fundraisers benefit Felt’s family.

The team-registration deadline has passed. However, shirts and wristbands will be sold at the

tournament.

Felt was a passionate and talented athlete. He played softball and kickball regularly and played baseball and football growing up.

He started playing football in Pop Warner as a child and played at Ocoee High School. He also loved to fish, hunt and drive his lifted truck down dirt roads.

“He played sports four nights a week, at least,” Dotson said, adding that he also played sports all

day on Saturdays. “He played for the Winter Garden league. ...He played in a Clermont league and then he played on a tournament team on Saturdays. And then (he played) kickball with the Winter Garden league.”

“He had so many championships,” Sarah Felt said. “… He won all the time.”

Margie Rivera and Jodi Smith both have known Tyler for a decade. Rivera played kickball with Tyler, and Smith played kickball and softball with him.

“He is definitely the goofiest person we’ve met,” Rivera said.

“He could turn anyone into a best friend. Everyone felt like they were Tyler’s best friend.”

“To know Tyler was to love him,” Smith said. “He was a very respectable, loving kid. I mean, I looked at him like my own son.”

Smith said Tyler was always willing to help people and often helped her husband with work. She added she was also his cookie baker.

“I bake cookies all the time, and I always saved him his own special bag,” Smith said. “I don’t know who I’m going to make cookies for.”

Alan Campos and Jim Klick both played softball in a Clermont league with Tyler and knew him for about a year. Although they didn’t know Tyler long, his absence is felt.

“There’s already a void in me, and I only knew him for a short time,” Campos said. “And I think there’s going to be a void on our team even though we all just kind of met him last (year).”

“He was a presence when he showed up,” Klick said. “… It’s the character that went with him — you can replace a ballplayer that can field any position, but you can’t replace a good character. You can’t replace … a personality.”

Smith added, “You can’t replace Tyler Felt.”

At a recent meeting of the Orange County School Board, authorization was made to secure an appraisal of the old school building in Gotha. The school has been discontinued, with the students being transferred to the new Windermere Elementary School. The citizens of Gotha want the old building for a community center, which would be operated on a nonprofit basis.

Ladies clubs are giving a boost to the Winter Garden Chamber of Commerce fundraising drive for the repair and redecorating of the old ACL depot for its new offices.

JULY 28, 1988 The West Orange Times and the West Orange Chamber of Commerce hosted a West Orange Night in the Baseball City Stadium at Boardwalk and Baseball, the theme park and baseball fields at the intersection of Interstate 4 and U.S. 27.

B&B, which took over after Circus World left the premises, was the spring-training home of the Kansas City Royals.

More than 1,000 West Orange County residents attended the event, and Tim Shidel, of Ocoee, and 3-yearold Jason Grimes, of Winter Garden, threw out the first pitches.

The mission of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is to preserve the heritage and architecture of Winter Garden while creating new cultural experiences. The Foundation also preserves the material culture of West Orange County, using it to educate the area’s youth on the community’s rich history.

great summer camps. We’ll do home-school activities. We’ll actually start to do special-needs days and a bunch of different things that (are) kind of customized to the local community. … We’re teaming up with local schools to do fundraisers.”

Defy also can be rented out for private events and parties. The air-sports park features four party rooms and a large mezzanine that can be converted into a party area, Bogenschutz said.

“We do group rates, we do private parties (and) we do lockins or overnight slumber parties where they have the whole park to themselves,” he said. “Birthday parties will be a huge thing for us, as well.”

Despite having only been open for less than a month, Bogenschutz said Defy has been well-received in the community and already has repeat customers.

“It’s exciting to see somebody walk in and just be like, ‘Wow,’” Bogenschutz said. “That’s what one of the most rewarding things is: when somebody comes in for the first time, and you feel like you’ve already exceeded what they thought it would be like.”

When it comes to having a good time, Defy Orlando takes fun to new heights — quite literally.

The extreme air-sports trampoline park opened its doors on Friday, Aug. 10, at 8010 W. Colonial Drive. Defy features a wide variety of obstacle courses, slacklines, tons of trampolines, a “wipeout machine” and many more aerial attractions.

“Flight tickets” to Defy are sold based on time and can be purchased online or on-site. Flyers must sign a waiver before they could enjoy the park. Flyers under 18 must have the waiver signed by a parent or legal guardian, and those under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.

“We try to have obstacles for all age ranges,” General Manager Brenden Bogenschutz said.

“We opened here in this location, because we felt like we wanted to offer something that was wholesome recreation for kids.”

Bogenschutz added Defy Orlando is fun for the whole family and is open to would-be flyers of all ages. Defy even hosts events that geared toward older individuals.

“Every Friday and Saturday night, the lights turn off, and it turns into a club,” Bogenschutz said. “Anybody can come in and find something they’re going to like.”

In addition to club nights on the weekends, Defy also will host various other activities.

“We’ll do different events,” Bogenschutz said. “We do some

t age 11, Victoria Mei Ashton has been to 22 countries, performed in 12 shows and attended musical-theater camp in London three times — and she’s just getting started.

The Foundation Academy student, who goes by Mei, lives in MetroWest and has been involved in productions with Winter Garden’s Acting Up Theater Academy since she was 7.

Her mother, Jeannie Lee, first thought of introducing her to musical theater when she realized her daughter’s passion for singing wasn’t just a phase. Some of her favorite songs to sing, from a young age, included Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” and Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies.”

“She’s always loved singing, so I thought, ‘Let’s try musical theater,’ because she’s been singing since she was 2,” Lee said. “(And) ever

since she was 4 years old, when you asked her what she wanted to be she would say ‘a singer,’ and she’s never deviated from that. …

One of my favorite memories was her teacher in transitional kindergarten sent me a video of her singing (Journey) right in the middle of class when she was working.”

And if you ask Mei why she sings and acts, the answer is simple.

“It’s just my passion,” she said.

STAR OF THE SHOW

Mei is no stranger to the spotlight, and most of the time any stage fright she feels can be cured with one simple, deep breath. In fact, she just finished callback auditions for her 13th show with AUTA, “Footloose.”

“I like the stage, when you get a lot of applause,” she said. “It’s just really fun, and it’s amazing. You get to meet some new friends, and my best friend started acting with me when I did my first show with AUTA.”

Most recently, Mei took on a big challenge in AUTA’s spring rendition of “Mary Poppins,” reprising the role of none other than the magical nanny. It was her first starring lead, and she found out it was hers while she was at Epcot.

For the next four months, she spent as much time as she could studying her new role and even participated in acting lessons over FaceTime with a West Orange High student who played Mary Poppins in the high school’s show.

“I had to work really hard toward it to learn my lines in all the songs,” Mei said. “We would listen to the music every day in the car on the way to school, practice, Irish dance lessons, all that stuff. Sometimes, I’d bring my script to school and learn it at recess. From street art to SOBOCycles Winter Garden artist Luke “Lsos” Sosinavage hopes to get more involved with community art and make a difference through creativity.

If you’ve walked into Winter Garden Wheel Works lately, you’ve probably seen a colorful bike frame, designed with the concepts of graffiti, urban art and cubism in mind.

It’s one of the countless works Winter Garden resident Luke “Lsos” Sosinavage has completed since getting serious about art as a profession a few years ago. The Philadelphia native always welded his life experiences together with his knack for creativity.

“When I was in early school, instead of doing my subjects, I was usually always drawing,” he said. “(I was inspired by) a lot of early influences like movies, music and some friends I met through skateboarding. I was always just drawing and got into different mediums.”

Sosinavage, 40, credits getting into skateboarding and being in uptown Philadelphia as one of his earliest introductions to urban design, graffiti and street art.

Additionally, his passion for

comic books served as another inspiration to the type of art he wanted to create.

“I have a simplistic basis for what street art was to me,” he said.

“As far as a following with graffiti, I was influenced by people in Pittsburgh when I was younger — deejays, musicians and activists.

It was almost a schooling for me.”

Although he began studying graphic design at one point to try to get work, he ended up moving to Florida to be closer to family and dive into fresh inspiration.

The move also sparked new connections with other artists, as well as his willingness to get out in the community and do art shows or paint in public.

“Probably about 2005 was when I got serious about art,” he said.

“From 2005 to 2009 things resonated a bit, and then I just saw what other guys were doing, and it made things click a bit. Getting out around the community and painting other places and doing art strolls or shows (helped me) get back with other artists.”

mainly with acrylic and aerosols, paint markers and permanent markers. He creates on anything from sketchbooks to canvas to discarded furniture or cabinets. From plein air and abstract expressions to nature-inspired pieces with bright or earthy colors, he is spontaneous with whatever technique he feels best for a given project.

“I go with impressionistic values and my technique has impressionistic qualities,” he said. “As far as realism I might paint characters.

For landscapes or patterns, I (use) graph cubism. For most patterns, I use a lot of lines, and I’ll spot paint.”

Most recently, he was asked to paint a SOBOCycle for the Winter Garden Art Association, along with five other local artists.

The name of his piece is “chik3n scratch dragon junk trance,” and it was put up for auction toward the beginning of the month. He used aerosol paints, paint markers and a sealer to finish his cycle, which he estimates took about 10 hours of work.

“Right now the work ethic to what I’m doing is to accomplish something, or if people are interested in purchasing art. That’s a benefit,” Sosinavage said. “I have to be thankful, because I’m not a ‘starving artist.’ … There’s a lot of people who create art, and they’re good. It’d be nice to prosper a little more than what I am now. … I resonate with painting a lot, and I’d like to be able to communicate with people and have a positive influence.”

Lee’s favorite memory of seeing Mei in “Mary Poppins” was the method her daughter used to control her reaction to her best friend, Gaby, playing the role of Mrs. Andrews: Mei would cross her eyes so she couldn’t see Gaby, therefore preventing her from laughing while pretending to be enemies.

Aside from acting and singing, Mei also takes Irish dancing lessons, plays violin and both draws and paints.

ADVENTURES ABROAD

Most recently, Mei and her mother returned from a five-week trip to Europe, two weeks during which they stayed in London for Mei’s third time at West End Stage. The program is the United Kingdom’s premier theater summer school for young, aspiring thespians from ages 8 to 21.

“It’s really fun, because there’s lots of new people from different countries,” Mei said. “I met a girl named Olivia, and she was from Japan. One person was from Norway. People were from a lot of different countries. We did a mas-

terclass with beatboxing and an ‘Aladdin’ master class, which was probably my favorite. (The person who plays) Aladdin taught it, and we learned the dance, a couple of steps from ‘Friend Like Me.’” All of Mei’s teachers were West End Stage performers, and she once again got to perform at Her Majesty’s Theatre in the heart of the West End, which is home to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera.”

What’s more: Mei even paid for her own summer-camp tuition.

She and her mother save all year, every year, to be able to take trips

to Europe and attend the camp.

Mei commissioned and sold paintings, wrote to businesses asking for sponsorships, sold cupcakes and made bows. “(Acting) is fun, because you get to show your expressions,” Mei said. “It’s amazing how you get to act. When people act they can make you cry and it’s so emotional. I also get to see a lot of new countries and learn a lot of facts on tours, and it’s educational.”

Wherever Mei’s theater journey takes her, Lee is ready to support her and be her travel companion through it all.

“Through theater, she’s grown a lot in her confidence but also in teamwork and compassion,” Lee said. “She reaches out to the newbies and is compassionate for them because she’s now a veteran.

For the England part, really it was always her choice. The second and third year, she raised her own money, and that was part of the deal. …With the cultural part and her wanting to do theater, it opens so many doors for her in terms of learning stories, going to watch a show and seeing it come to life in front of her eyes.”

Seniors broke out brushes, rollers, tape and stencils to paint their parking spots.

WEST ORANGE OBITUARIES HARRY P. RAYMOND JR., M.D. DIED SUNDAY, AUG. 12, 2018.

Harry P. Raymond Jr., M.D., devoted husband, father, grandfather and surgeon, peacefully passed on Sunday in the presence of family, while sleeping.

Born Oct. 7, 1926, in Fort Eustis, Virginia, son of Harry P. Raymond Sr. and Berenice McAdam, Harry graduated from Charlotte Central High School and was an accomplished violinist (Charlotte Symphony Orchestra). He also achieved the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout.

Harry graduated with honors from Duke University and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Harry interned at George Wash-

ington University Hospital and completed his residency training at Bellevue Hospital in affiliation with NYU School of Medicine.

While making surgery rounds, he saw Lois Ruth Saeger, a nursing student, and immediately proclaimed to his friend, “I am going to marry her!”

of the Burn Unit for many years and worked as a Trauma Surgeon until he retired at age 75. Harry loved practicing medicine. Every patient could expect an hour meeting with him prior to surgery. Doing his own history and physical, he explained to each patient the surgery, complete with drawings.

“This way, I get to know the patient, and the patient knows me,” he said.

Following surgery, he visited his hospitalized patients twice a day, seven days a week. Harry’s love of medicine inspired two children and three grandchildren to pursue medical careers.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edward Loughlin, and is survived by daughters, Melinda Siburt, of Port St. Lucie, Lorraine Drumheller and husband, Lance, of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, and Nancy Loughlin (Burke), of Winter Garden. Mildred is also survived by three grandchildren, Deanna (Burke) Darigan of Orlando and husband, Sean, James Burke, of Winter Garden, and Eddie Drumheller, of Mechanicsburg; as well as two great-grandchildren, Avery Darigan and Kyrie Darigan.

One of five siblings, Mildred is survived by her youngest sister, Pat Petragnani, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Family gathered to honor her memory on Aug. 16, 2018, as Mildred was laid to rest beside Edward at South Florida National Cemetery.

Moved to Leonardo, New Jersey, Hosford Avenue. Attended Leonardo Grade School, 19351943. Went on to Leonardo High School, 1943-1947. Graduated and went on to graduate Newark Preparatory and Business College, 1947-1949.

Forced to enlist in the U.S. Navy and on to basic training at Great Lakes N.T.C. in Illinois.

Attended Machinist Mate School 1949. Sent to 7th Fleet on West Coast and assigned to A-Division — Aircraft Carrier “Boxer” CVA21 and remained aboard for 36 months through the Korean War, 1949-1953. Discharged in 1953 at Treasure Island — San Francisco as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class.

Came home. Worked at Bendix Aviation in Red Bank, New Jersey, for six months while awaiting the hiring process of the Bell System. In 1953 joined N.J. Bell Telephone Co. as a lineman, moved on to installer then repairman.

Worked in Red Bank, Long Branch and Bell Labs in Holmdel. In 1955, I met my lovely wife, Annette, and married in 1955. Lived in Middletown, New Jersey, and had three children, Debbie, Diane and Jeff.

In 1968 accepted a permanent transfer to Southern Bell in Orlando, Florida, as a service tech, getting ready for Disney World, Lockheed Martin and the Space Coast. Spent 31 years with the Bell system and retired in

HOMER HORACE CRAIG Homer Horace Craig, 81, of Winter Garden, Florida, went to be with Jesus on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018. Homer was born March 30, 1937, in Canfield, Ohio, to the late Russell Leroy and Jessie Florence Clay Craig.

After moving to Florida, he attended Edgewater High School.

Homer served his country as a member of the United States National Guard. He owned several businesses over his lifetime, attended First Baptist Church of Winter Garden and was an avid Florida Gator fan.

Bryce Adkinson Bryce Adkinson is a junior at West Orange High and was an important part of the Windermere Wildfire 16U — Paulsen travel softball team that placed seventh in the nation recently. An outfielder, Adkinson has impressive range and does well at the plate, too. She has committed to play her college softball at Murray State.

What happened at the tournament after the team started 1-2 and was in danger of being sent home early?

All of us girls got together and had a little meeting about coming together as a team — at first we weren’t playing for each other. We came together and started playing together.

Of which win during the sixgame winning streak are you most proud?

We lost the first game of bracket play, and we beat that team (in the losers’ bracket) — we beat them pretty bad, actually. We were fired up, because we knew this team was the team that knocked us out (of the winners’ bracket).

What was the favorite nonsoftball part of the trip to the Seattle area?

The trip was super fun — we got to see the Space Needle.

My favorite part, because I don’t see snow that often, was when we went to Mount Rainier. We all had snowball fights and played in the snow for a couple hours.

Do you enjoy playing for the Wildfire alongside some of your rivals from the varsity season?

Yes, it’s super fun. We go to different high schools,

What did you like about Murray State that led you to commit there?

Well, I’m country, and I like the country, and Kentucky is very country — it’s a small school and a small town.

The coaches were a big part.

They’re easy to talk to and comfortable.

What was your first season playing varsity at West Orange like last spring?

We all got hurt at the beginning — there were a bunch of us hurt. We didn’t do too hot at the beginning, and our coach (Todd LaNeave) had a heart attack. … At the end, we all came together and started winning — we took it all the way to state.

What’s the better feeling — getting an important hit or making a tough catch?

That’s hard. I’d have to say making a tough catch. I robbed one (from being a home run) over the summer, and it was pretty amazing.

What’s your favorite area of study at school?

P.E. — athletic stuff.

Do you have hobbies outside of softball?

I like to hunt and fish. We go to Ocala and hunt and Englewood to fish. I like hunting — we hunt with dogs.

Johnna Shamley (Holy Cross), Alix Polk (Sacred Heart) and Gabby Nye were leaders for the team in 2017, and those responsibilities now pass on to Bucknell commit Mya Wilson, junior setter Emma McElveen and senior libero Anaeli Perea. New coach Julianne Calcote brings a collegiate background to the table, but the Titans will need to see new faces step up to try and make another run.

How deep is the roster at Dr. Phillips?

Because of the way seeding worked out for the district tournament in 2017, Dr. Phillips and Olympia met in the district semifinal and not the district final. That was a shame, because both teams had strong seasons and deserved a shot at the postseason. The Panthers missed the playoffs in 2017 but are not to be slept on in 2018. The team boasts a core group of returners, including seniors Mallory Porcher (NC A&T commit), Laura Misko (Stetson beach volleyball commit) and dynamic underclassmen. Under the fiery coaching of Danny Eleutiza, the Panthers will be a team fans can always expect to play hard and to the final whistle.

Who will emerge as the new playmakers for the new-look Royals?

Two years removed from a state championship in 2016, The First Academy will be led by junior standout Elli McKissock, a Florida Gators commit.

Beyond McKissock, though, coach Dan Hedger’s team will be looking to players such as Emily Oerther to shoulder the load and help the team achieve success at the Cramer Family Field House.

Is a young Windermere roster ready to make a leap?

The Wolverines took some lumps in their inaugural season but also showcased some tangible potential, making the playoffs in Class 8A in their first season. Windermere boasts several dynamic returns, including Cassidy Chambers, Ava Czyzewski and Erin Welsh, and can expected to add a handful of talented newcomers from the Bridgewater Middle School team

that won the OCPS County Championship. The team is only in its second season, but the Wolverines could be on the verge of some impressive results in 2018.

Can Windermere Prep emerge from a rugged district?

The Lakers finished at 14-14 in 2017 and compete in a tough district, with Lake Highland Prep, Trinity Prep, The First Academy and Montverde Academy all fighting for two playoffs spots. But Windermere Prep has added the Bergner sisters — Angeline and Arianna — to an already talented roster that could help the Lakers emerge as a playoff contender. Returners Riley Nowick, Mia Russo, Natalie Work and Julia Bernardes form a core with lots of height and firepower.

How much improvement can Foundation expect in year two under Vicky Veloz?

In coach Vicky Veloz’s first year in 2017, the Lions were ultra-young, with eight players who were sophomores or younger — two of whom were eighth-graders. Foundation went 6-10, but even the defeats the team suffered served as valuable reps for those young, talented players. Rising senior Anna Grace Williams — who led the team in kills and digs in 2017 — will lead a team that is hopeful to surprise some folks in its district in 2018.

Can Legacy eclipse its 2017 win total?

Legacy’s volleyball program has had some lumps in recent years — the team went 2-16 in 2017 — but the Eagles are optimistic heading into the 2018 season. Abigail Dannels, who was second on the team in kills and first in digs in 2017, is back for her senior season.

The team also boasts a talented passer in Ava Tewson, a junior who led the team in assists last fall. Steve Gegerson coaches the Eagles tough, and they figure to be a formidable foe this fall.

Can CFCA replace the senior leadership it lost to graduation?

The Eagles graduated a large class from last year’s team — a team that had some success and went 8-10 in Stacy Osborne’s third season. Replacing those players — many of whom were with the program for a few years — will be no small task. The Eagles compete in a tough district with programs including Victory Christian, International Community and Winter Park’s Geneva School.

Getting going will be important — there is no rest for Division I coaches. The spring season for college softball, which begins in February, is closer than it seems, and the work recruiting and building a program never ends. Butler wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s always been a dream of mine, since I was a softball player, to be a head coach,” Butler said.

Toward the end of her playing career — she retired in 2015 — Butler began working as an assistant for a handful of programs, including her alma mater. Toledo gave her a shot as a head coach in 2014, and she did not disappoint, overseeing a turnaround wherein the Rockets enjoyed their best four-year stretch since the late 1990s, reaching the 30-win plateau in 2018 for the first time since 1995.

Earlier this year, she was recognized as the Mid-American Conference’s Coach of the Year for the Rockets’ strong season.

Now, preparing to lead the Scarlet Knights, she has a good grip on coaching at the collegiate level and why she has been so taken by it.

“It’s a constant learning thing — each year the kids are different, and as a coach, you have to keep adapting to that,” Butler said. “It’s fun because every day, I still get to get out there and play softball, too.”

Butler is looking forward to injecting a little more Florida into the program at Rutgers, too. While at Toledo, Butler had four players from Florida on the roster, including Samantha Golden, who graduated from West Orange High.

She is excited to lean into her local connections and was pleasantly surprised when the roster she inherited already had a head start.

“I was excited to look at the roster at Rutgers and see there’s a young lady from just south of Tampa,” Butler said. “There’s already a Florida girl there, and that’ll be a good connection.”

MAKING MEMORIES Kristen Butler has had several stops in her softball career, as a player and a coach, making memories along the way.

CFCA (player, 19972002): Butler was part of a run at CFCA where the Eagles softball program went to the FHSAA Final Four all six years she was part of the varsity team, winning two state championships.

“We didn’t know any different other than going to the (FHSAA) Final Four,” Butler said.

Kristen Butler’s softball career has taken her around the world.

There have been many stops since she was a six-year standout for Central Florida Christian Academy — as a star player at the University of Florida, as a professional player in Chicago and in Japan, and then there is her coaching career — but Butler still can recall her time on the campus in east Ocoee.

“I grew up there,” Butler said. “I was there because mom worked there. I remember it like the back of my hand.”

Currently, she’s only about 1,000 miles away in Piscataway Township, New Jersey, settling in as the recently hired head coach of the Rutgers University softball program. It’s an exciting opportunity for the former Eagle to lead a program within the Big Ten after an incredibly successful four years at the University of Toledo — her first go-around as a head coach after years as an assistant.

Reached by phone Aug. 13, Butler said one of the more pressing goals for her and family is to simply finish unpacking.

“We haven’t been there a ton — this week will kind of be our first week being (in the family’s new home) for a good while,” Butler said. “We’re trying to finish unpacking and get going.”

UF (player, 2003-06): Butler’s career for the Gators was so decorated that it is tough to pick out memories. She was recognized as SEC Player of the Year and was part of teams had several signature wins.

“I think just competing in the SEC, in general, was so fun, and we hosted regionals three out of four years that I was at Florida,” Butler said.

Professional career (2006-15): Butler had a number of stops in a professional playing career that carried over into her coaching days. She fondly remembers her time playing internationally, in Japan.

“I set a record over there for home runs, and I think that the culture shock was fun — I would recommend (playing

internationally) to anybody,” Butler said. “The language barrier, I think that was so much fun — they’re shouting things from the stands and you just turn and smile and wave.”

Toledo (head coach, 2014-18): Butler oversaw a program turnaround wherein the Rockets enjoyed their best fouryear stretch since the late 1990s and reached the 30-win plateau in 2018 for the first time since 1995. She said that her second season coaching, Toledo stood out, during which the team went on a 13-game winning streak and made the conference tournament for the first time in several years.

“That was just an unreal feat that that team did, and I’ll never forget that,” Butler said.

Rutgers (head coach, 2018-present): Obviously, having just settled in at Rutgers, Butler has not had much time to make memories — but she is confident they are coming.

“They have done nothing but have a red carpet for me,” Butler said. “It’s been a really fun transition and I’m very honored to be at Rutgers. There are several more memories to come at Rutgers.”
