Orange County Sheriff’s Office investigators have identified the 37-year-old man whose body was found in Lake Down as Johnny Salomon.

Responding marine patrol and dive units searched the 900-acre lake for Salomon and located his body in the middle of the lake at about 7:20 a.m.

A new home for the arts at Windermere Preparatory School is almost ready to step into the spotlight.

Finishing touches are being made on the Cypress Center for the Arts — the new two-story, 34,000-square-foot facility that includes a performance theater, classrooms for the arts and offices for faculty.

The building will be home to all middle- and high-school art, dance, theater and music classes, along with Lower School theater arts.

Students will have access to the theater, two dance studios, two theater-arts classrooms — which convert into a black box theater — an instrumental music hall and a large ensemble room for guitar classes and smaller string instrument classes. There is also a piano/keyboard lab, a vocal music rehearsal hall, a dressing room, three visual-arts classrooms and a scene shop where props are built.

“I refer to this as a shell — it’s not ours until we really make it ours,” Director of Fine Arts Jason King said while looking around the inside of the building. “We’re going to load everything with student artwork on the walls, get the furniture in here and truly make it a Windermere Prep building.

create, produce and make so many wonderful things happen is really special for our school,” he said.

Guests and students walking in are immediately greeted by a 1,000-square-foot atrium, which includes a video screen showcasing upcoming performances, two gallery walls to feature student art and plenty of open space to serve as a reception area.

“We can change the artwork in and out as often as we like to, where before I really had no home to feature our artwork,” King said.

“We’d set up the gymnasium for two days every May, and we had what was called the Masterpieces in May. … Now, we can feature all of our visual artwork under one roof.”

from the back wall and room for 50 foldable chairs in the center of the room, adding up to 600 available seats during a big show.

King said the telescopic seating gives the space flexibility. An acoustically engineered partition wall can be pulled to separate the 250 permanent seats from the back half of the the theater, allowing the room to host two events simultaneously — like a show and a dinner or two separate classes.

The theater also is equipped with four action cameras in the house for live streaming and recording, and the stage area has a motorized batten fly system, which can vary the speed of screens, backdrops and even performers on harnesses moving up in the air.

“Our all-school musical is ‘Peter Pan’ in November — the first thing we’re putting in here,” King said.

“We’re flying all four characters on stage. That’s going to be amazing.”

The new facility will give the arts programs flexibility, convenience, and the ability to keep productions and student projects on campus.

Before the new facility, much of the school’s schedule for productions was dependent on booking an available space, King said.

“I was at the mercy of other venues … wherever and whenever I could get a space,” King said.

“The days of renting a U-Haul and having to pick up a big old timpani drum, put it in the back of a U-Haul to take it down the street for a concert … those are over.

We’re really happy about that. We do that only one time a year now for graduation (at the Dr. Phillips Performing Arts Center).”

It’s a project that started with meetings and conversations twoand-one-half years ago. The Cypress Center has come a long way from concept to completion, and one thing makes it all worth it, King said.

“The reason we’re doing this is the advocacy for the arts and what we can do for children in the arts,” King said. “Just to see them come through the doors … I can’t wait.

Cinépolis currently has 20 theaters nationwide, with the Hamlin theater being the fifth Florida location alongside Miami, Deerfield Beach, Jupiter and Davenport (Polk County). However, it is only the second Florida location for a Cinépolis luxury theater — the other three are premium theaters.

“Premium is a culmination of things, but luxury is very defined,” said Annelise Holyoak, Cinépolis USA’s national director of marketing and communications. “It has push-button waiter service, a full bar, luxury leather reclining seats, and the biggest difference is that it has the on-demand waiter service.

The premium locations vary, but typically it’s slightly more upscale than a traditional theater. Some have a full bar and some don’t, but none of them have the push-button waiter service.”

The on-demand waiter service allows moviegoers to order gourmet appetizers, beverages and restaurant-quality entrées at the simple push of a button. The menu includes the traditional popcorn

and candy but also boasts cheese boards, hummus, flatbreads, salads, hot sandwiches, tacos, a dessert menu and more.

“We have a full menu of pretty much anything you can think of — from healthy options to burgers and fries,” Holyoak said. “We sell all the traditional candy, and at this location, we sell butter popcorn, light popcorn, Cheetos popcorn and zebra popcorn — which is caramel corn drizzled with chocolate. We also serve our own caramel popcorn, fresh and hot.”

And patrons don’t need to worry about their view being blocked: The auditoriums are set up stadium-style, so each seat is above the one in front of it.

Creating an upscale yet familyfriendly atmosphere is important to the company, and it’s part of the reason Holyoak said Cinépolis decided to plant roots in Hamlin.

“I think the Boyd Development Company and Hamlin are great partners for us,” she said. “The Orlando market, in terms of Winter Garden, is underserved with options outside of Disney. We’ve already gotten so much great feedback from guests, that they’re happy to have something to do entertainment-wise that is not related to any of the parks. … I think that’s really (Hamlin’s) mission, to create a great place for locals that is in a market traditionally underserved.

“There’s so many families, and while we do cater to date nights and we serve alcohol, we also serve families and play all the family movies,” she said. “This is a great area, it has great schools, and it’s the perfect location for us.”

Moviegoers also will find both surface parking and a two-story parking garage. The theater will play anywhere from eight to 10 movies, Holyoak said, and although it doesn’t have IMAX capabilities, there are 3D showings.

Ticket prices range depending on time and day, but guests can expect to pay about $5 more per ticket than they would at another theater, she said. For example, plan to pay just under $18 for a ticket if you’re going to see a new movie at peak time on a Saturday night.

According to witnesses, Salomon jumped out of a boat to swim in about 18 feet of water in Lake Down. After other swimmers returned to the boat, he did

not, deputies said. Witnesses said Salomon shouted for help before he disappeared underwater.

Investigators do not suspect foul play in this incident.

esidents still have the opportunity to catch one of the five remaining shows of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church’s theater production of “Footloose: The Musical.”

The show, the church’s seventh annual summer musical, opened on Friday, Aug. 3, and is based on the 1984 film of the same name starring Kevin Bacon as Ren McCormack.

The production tells the story of Ren, played by Spencer Morrow, and his mother, Ethel McCormack, played by Stephanie Adams, who leave Chicago to relocate to the small town of Bomont, Texas. But the mother and son quickly realize how different life in Bomont is from the city life to which they’re accustomed, particularly as the town has banned dancing.

However, with the help of his newfound friends Ariel Moore

and Willard Hewitt, played

by Andrea and Rob Stack, Ren takes on both the reverend and the town council, revealing the town’s unhealed wounds.

The show was directed by Boston native Steve MacKinnon, who has served as the St. Luke’s theater and contemporary music director since 2008.

“This story, I think, is really relevant in our society right now, because it’s about youth coming together and finding their voice and fighting the system to make a change in the world,” MacKinnon said. “And it’s also about the damage a church can cause in a community — the hurt and pain they might cause either knowingly or unknowingly. So I think we, as a church, are willing to say, ‘Yes, we know that a church might hurt people, and we know sometimes people might use the Bible as a weapon.’ And that’s exactly what happens in ‘FootSEE PLEASE PAGE 10

St. Luke’s lead pastor, Jennifer Stiles Williams, said the musical, made possible by local community and church members, was selected because of its themes and their relation to the church’s own goals.

“It’s an amazing show,” she said. “I help pick the musicals, and we choose them based on who we are as a church and the best way to share our core values of acceptance and hospitality. And we also try to choose something that speaks to the community and the world ... and it gives us an opportunity to kind of kick off our Sunday shoes, that are sometimes a little too tightfitting, not just physically but emotionally and spiritually.”

HENRY H. FITZPATRICK DIED WEDNESDAY, JULY 25, 2018.

Henry Fitzpatrick, 76, of Windermere, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 25, 2018.

He was born Aug. 12, 1941 in Madison, Georgia, to Henry and Glennie Fitzpatrick. His parents and sister, Elizabeth, predeceased him.

His wife of 55 years, Gayle; daughter, Beth; granddaughter, Diana; and many, many nieces and nephews survive him.

Henry grew up in Covington, Georgia, and was very active in the Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He graduated from Newton County High School in 1959 and from North Georgia College in 1964. He received his MBA from the University of Georgia in 1971 and loved “the Dawgs.”

Five days after graduating from North Georgia College, he entered the U.S. Army and served for more than 28 years, retiring as a colonel. His military medals include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Bronze Star Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters.

After retiring from the Army in 1991, Henry worked as program manager with a defense contractor in McLean, Virginia, and, after experiencing snow over the mailbox in 1998, Henry and Gayle moved to Orlando to be near their daughter, Beth.

He then worked for Westminster Services as training coordinator and ended his career in 2011 working as a program director for a defense contractor. Henry was a member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church.

At heart, Henry was an educator and loved teaching, whether it was training soldiers or teaching in several Army schools, at local community colleges or for Westminster Services. However, after retirement, he especially enjoyed volunteering at Lake Whitney Elementary as a math and reading tutor.

Henry had a passion for traveling and visited all 50 states and more than 60 countries. He loved his family and friends and had a very generous spirit for anyone in need.

Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life to be held at Windermere Town Hall, 520 Main St., Windermere at 10 a.m.

Saturday, Aug. 25. Those wishing to honor Henry can donate to Wounded Warriors Project or a charity of your choice.

Another door opens Olympia High alumna Chelsea Harpool had never rowed competitively before college but soon found herself competing for one of the nation’s elite programs.

F

or Chelsea Harpool, the adventures that life has thrown at her in recent years all feel like a case of doors opening unexpectedly.

There was the move her family made to Florida when she was a sophomore in high school, finding the perfect church and the athletic career she had at Olympia High.

She took up rowing in collage on a whim and — in what felt like the blink of an eye — went from competing for the club team at Florida State to the varsity team for national powerhouse Ohio State.

There was the unexpected joy and fulfillment she discovered through mission trips — and then there was the organization she found at Ohio State that merged it all together.

“From my perspective — all of this wasn’t at all possible without the will of God,” Harpool said. “It was just doors that were opened for me that logically shouldn’t have been opened.”

And so, as she readied herself for her next adventure — a yearlong mission trip to Puerto Rico that she left for this past Saturday — the former Olympia Titan couldn’t help but feel that she is doing exactly what she is supposed to be.

It’s important to note, though, that she never rowed before college.

Harpool arrived in Florida from Virginia as a sophomore and, at Olympia, she continued competing as a swimmer. She picked up water polo along the way, but mostly she specialized in the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke for the Titans.

She didn’t start her collegiate career at OSU, either.

Harpool began her studies at Florida State in the fall of 2013. That’s where she went to an information night for club sports on campus and was impressed by the pitch that the rowing club made. She gave it a shot, and Harpool remembers that — early on — it was more about being a part of a team than the sport itself.

“I didn’t necessarily love rowing at first, but I loved having a group of people to work out with — that’s why I kept going back,” Harpool said.

Of course, that changed.

Around spring of her freshman year, something clicked for Harpool. She was doing well and began to love the sport. Her freshman club season was highlighted by the Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, where her boat placed fourth.

Harpool had improved so much that a friend encouraged her to put herself out there as a potential recruit by varsity college programs. She expected nothing to come of it, but when she filled out a recruitment application for the University of Virginia in August 2014 and the coaches contacted her within a day, she began to wonder who else might be interested.

Eric Canavan got his first taste of varsity basketball as a sophomore with the Windermere High Wolverines, and he followed that this summer with his first taste of the AAU circuit. A strong showing for the CP25 team he played for garnered interested from several college programs and a scholarship offer from Rollins College in Winter Park.

What was it like to learn you had earned your first offer?

When we went there for the camp, I had no idea after that I would be offered from Rollins.

I was very excited — they gave me a tour of the campus, and it was beautiful.

What do you think you have done well this summer?

I think that I’ve been getting a little more confidence in my game, considering I’ve never played AAU — this is my first summer playing AAU. So, I feel like I’ve just gotten a lot more confident, and I’m looking forward to better seasons.

What technical elements of your game are you working to improve?

I’m working on my threepoint shot, so I can add more range to my shot. And then I’m working on ball-handling.

What was it like to be a part of Windermere High’s first basketball season?

Last season was very fun. It was my first year being on varsity, and everyone on the team — we all got along well.

Is there a game or two that stands out?

The home game against West Orange, for sure, where we beat them and the crowd was crazy — our side and their side. And then the Olympia game, when we won within the last four minutes.

Are there any professional or college players you admire or try to emulate?

I really like Kyrie Irving — he’s a fun player to watch, with how he handles the ball and his basketball IQ on the

floor. A player that I think is like me is Kevin Love, but before he went to the (Cleveland) Cavs, when he was on the Timberwolves. He wasn’t just a spot-up shooter, then — he could do things on the floor.

What drew you to basketball?

My dad, Jay Canavan, he played basketball in high school and college.

What do you think you would like to do for a career?

I would like to go into business or finance, maybe work as an accountant. I’m good at numbers, and I can’t see myself going into a medical field or anything like that. Finance is the best thing that pops into my head.

What’s your favorite place to grab a bite?

Chick-fil-A. My mom should have stock in Chick-filA. I go probably a couple times a week, and whenever I go, I get a 12-count nugget meal and an extra chicken sandwich.

The American Junior Golf Association made a stop in Bay Hill last week, with the annual playing of the Jim Bell Memorial Junior attracting some of the top youth golfers from around the nation — and beyond.

The boys champion was Tyler Wilkes, of Tampa, who completed the three-round tournament with a six-under-par 210.

The top local finisher among the boys field was Jonah Leach, an Olympia High student from Windermere. Leach finished fourth, overall, with a one-overpar 217.

As it turns out, a program that had just won consecutive national championships was interested.

“I Googled the rankings and Ohio State had just won the national championship, so I was like, ‘What the heck?’” Harpool said. “About two weeks later, I heard back and everything happened so quickly — I didn’t get to look at any other schools.”

By January 2015, Harpool was enrolled at Ohio State as a varsity athlete for a team en route to its third consecutive national championship.

“It was unreal — I had no idea what I was getting myself into,” she said. “I was in so far over my head, but the culture of the team is incredible. It’s the greatest group of women that encourage and push each other. … They’re the ones that got me through it.”

Over time, Harpool became one of the team’s stronger competitors, eventually making the cut to go to the NCAA Championships as a senior. She has a national championship ring from that first season with the Buckeyes, and eventually she got used to being a part of one of the nation’s best programs in the sport.

“It’s funny, because that becomes normal,” Harpool said. “But I also just had these random moments of, ‘This is crazy!’”

MISSION: MINISTRY

A couple years before the rowing door opened in Harpool’s life, another opened that may be even more important.

While at Olympia, she had begun attending High Point Church, where she felt like the faith of her family became her own. Through High Point, she went on a mission trip to Mexico when she was 16.

tional missions,” Harpool said.

“On that trip, I felt like God put it on my heart to be in the mission field, long-term, eventually. Connecting with people from different cultures and who don’t speak the same language as me … being able to build relationships and share the Gospel is an unreal experience.”

In the following years, she completed mission trips to Haiti (twice), back to Mexico, the Dominican Republic and also did a service trip through Ohio State to Bolivia.

On campus, she got involved with Athletes in Action — an organization that specializes in ministering to college athletes.

Through that organization, Harpool — who graduated from OSU this spring with a degree in social work and a minor in non-profits — departed Aug. 4 for Puerto Rico, where she will spend a year ministering to college athletes at three different universities.

It’s the latest door to open in her life, and she hopes it is a sign of what’s to come. Harpool hopes to work full time in ministry as a career, and if it should involve helping college athletes — as it will in Puerto Rico for the next 12 months — then all the better.

“It’s my wildest dreams coming true, because it is the two things I love most in life and have been most passionate about — all wrapped up in one,” she says, adding, “And I get to call it my job.”

It would have been easy for the girls of the Windermere Wildfire 16U — Paulson to have hung their heads.

The team had made the trip across the country — to Kent, Washington, just outside of Seattle — and, within the span of three games, things looked bleak.

After splitting a pair of games in pool play to decide seeding for the the double-elimination tournament at USA Softball 16U Fast Pitch Nationals in late June, the Wildfire dropped the first game of bracket play, dropping them into the losers’ bracket.

The trip was nearly a short stay, but then the team of local girls rallied. The Wildfire won six games in a row before losing again, ultimately finishing seventh at the national tournament.

After finishing in 14th two years earlier and ninth in 2017, it was an impressive step forward.

“It was very depressing at first, but I was very impressed — and have been impressed for the two or three years that I’ve been coaching these kids — at their willingness to fight and their resiliency,” head coach George Paulson said. “The level of competition (at Nationals) — it is the best of the best.”

be invited to the event, teams have to have won a qualifying event.

Not only did the team rattle off six consecutive wins, nearly battling all the way back from the losers’ bracket, but also it had the opportunity to right a loss — the Wildfire’s final win came against the Indiana Shockwave, the team that had defeated the local girls at the beginning of bracket play.

Despite that particular game being the fourth of the day for Windermere, the Wildfire were deter-

“It was a successful showing for Windermere Wildfire and something that everyone was proud of leaving there,” Paulson said. “You always hope to win, but we’d done a good job.”
