Windermere rapist gets maximum sentence ERIC GUTIERREZ STAFF WRITER

A Windermere man convicted of rape was sentenced to 45 years in prison Friday, July 27.

Darryl Wayne Patterson, 51, was found guilty of attempted sexual battery and sexual battery with incapacitation during a jury trial in March. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the charge of attempted sexual battery and sentenced to 30 years for the sexual battery charge. Both sentences will be served consecutively.

“We are pleased with the judge’s sentence of 45 years for the rapist, Darryl Patterson,” Windermere Police Chief David Ogden wrote

on Facebook. “Our thoughts and prayers are still with the innocent victims he destroyed.”

Prior to passing the sentence, Judge Jenifer Harris heard from individuals who spoke on Patterson’s behalf.

“I know that he’ll turn his life around,” said Patterson’s brother, Michael Reese. “I know that he’ll do what he needs to do going forward.”

The judge also heard from the victim of the case.

“I do find this extremely difficult to discuss — the crime and the effects of it,” the victim said. “At times, I find it difficult to breath and experience anxiety attacks.

I have nightmares and difficulty sleeping.”

Chief Assistant State Attorney Deborah Barra also appeared before the judge to request that he receive the maximum sentence.

“He deserves the maximum

sentence because he has earned the maximum sentence,” Barra said.

“Mr. Patterson was best friends with his victim. We learned that she wanted to celebrate an event in her life, and she turned to him to share that occasion. And when they were in a bar and when she was feeling the effects of what she believes was a drug, she went to him to protect her, to help her because he was her friend. … He didn’t protect her. He raped her.”

Patterson was arrested on rape charges in June 2016, but the case goes back a number of years.

In 2012, a woman who lived with and had a romantic relationship with Patterson turned in a collection of videotapes to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. She told investigators she took the tapes when she moved out of Patterson’s home and viewed a portion of one of them. The tapes appeared to show Patterson engaging in sexual

acts with a woman who appeared to be unconscious or drugged, according to Patterson’s search warrant.

Orange County investigators turned the tapes over to the Windermere Police Department after it learned some of the crimes occurred in Patterson’s Windermere home. However, the department’s investigators, operating under different leadership, determined the case as unfounded, and the tapes sat in a storage shed until they were rediscovered in late December 2014.

Around the time of the rediscovery, Patterson came into the Windermere Police Department to report he had been a victim of fraud. An officer recognized Patterson from the tapes, and Windermere Police Detective John Allen — who recently started working for WPD at the time — began looking into the incidents.

In February 2015, Patterson was brought in for questioning. About a month later, he attempted to assault another woman. After that incident — and in addition to the tapes — police were able to execute a search warrant on his home. A search of his home revealed additional tapes, and Patterson was arrested thereafter.

Two women accused Patterson of rape throughout his trial; however, he was only convicted of charges involving one of the victims because the four-year statute of limitations had passed before he was arrested in June 2016.

F

our West Orange-area residents are among many who spend their days helping make the magic happen at Walt Disney World.

For some, that entails caring for animals at Animal Kingdom.

For others, it involves any of the numerous roles in the theme parks, from merchandise and retail sales to character attendants or engineering.

But the magic doesn’t always come from the mouse: Sometimes, it comes from a set of hands and a pair of knitting needles.

They are Disney cast members, but they’re also known as the Blanketeers.

BIRTH OF THE BLANKETEERS

Around 2008, there were small pockets of cast members who enjoyed crafting on their lunch hours, said cast member and Winter Garden resident Debbie Weber. It was around that time the VoluntEARS program — which arranges volunteer activities around the community for cast members to participate in — changed from yellow to white shirts. Some decided to reach out to the crafters to see if they had any use for the old fabric.

As it turned out, the crafters did: They turned the old shirts into crocheted pet beds to donate to local animal shelters and rescues.

With that, they took a page from California’s Disneyland Blanketeers group and created the Walt Disney World Blanketeers.

About 80 Blanketeers contribute on a regular basis, and about 200 total will contribute from time to time or participate in monthly boxing events, where all of the crafts are shipped out to local charities.

Each Blanketeer brings his or her own talent and skill to the table. Some are craftier than others and take on the sewing, knitting, crocheting and quilting tasks. Others contribute by cutting up material, braiding, tying knots and packing or delivering the finished products.

“We have a group known as corporate citizenship, a group within Team Disney that helps us determine what we can send out to charities,” said Winter Garden resident Albert Intenzo. “We have caps, scarves, blankets, large blankets for families and smaller blankets for infants, booties, shawls and more. They work with charities to determine what they need, but it doesn't always hold us back from creating other things.”

Crafts and projects range from blankets, quilts and cold-weather clothing to pet beds, dog tug toys and pillows. Additionally, Winter Garden resident Kate St. Germain, Weber’s mother, loves creating “walker bags” out of pillowcases for purple martins.

“I’ve been with the company for 14 years ago and my daughter Deb introduced me to VoluntEARS,” St. Germain said. “We've done, because of her interest in animals, the bags for the purple martins research and the surgical masks for the Gorilla Rehab center in Africa. …(And) when I started to do the quilts I thought, ‘Well, when I get to be a little old lady in a nursing home I hope someone gives me a quilt.’”

In 2017 the Walt Disney World Blanketeers produced and distributed more than 8,500 items.

Their most recent shipment comprised 21 boxes bound for 15 different organizations; however, Intenzo said, the group has had as many as 40 boxes shipped at a time.

“When we meet, it’s on our lunch or after our shifts,” Intenzo said. “It’s volunteer time, it’s not on the clock, and it’s people giving their own time and sometimes their own materials. We up-cycle as much as we can, so if costuming is changing something out they bring it to us first to repurpose instead of incinerating.”

As of July 26, the group has donated more than 4,300 items this year. It averages about 700 items a month, and the members hope to break last year’s 8,500 mark.

“There’s a pride in knowing we’re maintaining skills and increasing the number of people who know how to do these things,” Weber said. “These are wonderful crafting skills we not only get to learn ourselves but then teach others how to do. I think there’s a different quality to something that’s handmade.”

PAYING IT FORWARD

Each Blanketeer has his or her own story of involvement with the group. For Horizon West resident Victoria Hamilton, it began last fall when there was a charity request for about 150 baby hats.

“I crocheted forever and my friend was part of the group; when they sent out the call for the caps I said, ‘I can make baby hats,’” Hamilton said. “I ended up mak-

ing 30 hats or something. I came to the meeting to turn them in and the rest is history. So far this year, I have over 200 volunteer hours (logged). It was the baby hats that got me hooked.”

Weber has been with Walt Disney World for more than 25 years and was one of the original Blanketeers. Intenzo said he got involved when he saw Sabine Jeunette, one of the coordinators of the Walt Disney World Blanketeers, sitting out front crocheting.

“I used to (crochet) years ago but had stopped and she said, ‘Come on Thursday,’” Intenzo said. “I met with her and picked it back up, and that has to be about five years ago.”

There is a special Blanketeers project for just about every organization or charity that requests one, from homeless shelters and military care packages to animal shelters and social workers. Hamilton’s personal favorite projects are the baby hats, which are a good way to use excess yarn from a blanket or square project.

Weber loves making things for animals, whether that be crocheted pet beds or tug toys. She also makes contact with Disney’s textile-service department to get the old clothes needed to make them. St. Germain enjoys quilting and sewing, and Intenzo is partial to blankets. He also is nifty with learning new techniques and creating his own patterns.

“Albert truly has the Disney talent,” Weber said. “Walt Disney envisioned this goal and could make it a reality, and I think that’s what he does with the creations he makes. He has the ability to think, ‘How do I get there and make that (project) become a reality?’”

What’s more, Disney rewards its volunteers’ logged hours with grants, which they can donate to a chosen charity.

“I love it — I don't feel as though I have that many opportunities in my life to give back, and I work a full-time gig and it’s difficult to find time to do things where I’m not necessarily stepping away from my family,” Intenzo said. “I can do this and be at home, so for me that’s my thing. … I love the opportunity to give something back without taking away form something else.”

“I think about it as pay-it-forward,” Hamilton said. “I have joy to make this item and put it out into the world and hope it brings joy to someone else.”

The meeting took place Tuesday, July 25, at Keene’s Crossing Elementary, where area residents learned more details about the applicant’s request.

The applicant — Kathy Hattaway — who represents property owner Titan Western Beltway LLC, has requested the county to rezone the property from Citrus Rural District (A-1) to Planned Development (PD) to make way for a proposed 110 townhomes and 316 rental apartments.

According to site plans, the proposed density of the parcel where

the apartments would be constructed is 24 units per acre, and the maximum allowed density is 25 units per acre. And the proposed density for the parcel envisioned to be used for townhomes is nine units per acre, although the maximum allowed is 10 units per acre.

Hattaway said the property owner has not yet selected a builder and no information about the building heights and square footage is yet available, because the request is still in the initial stages of the county’s permit process. Hattaway emphasized the property will adhere to open-space requirement and the property owner is not request-

ing anything that differs from the Horizon West Comprehensive Plan or strict design standards.

If the permit process proceeds without any delays, construction is expected to begin in 18 months, Hattaway added.

Area residents at the community meeting asked how many students the development might bring and what is being done to address ongoing traffic issues in the area, which they feared may be exacerbated with all the coming development.

County officials said based on Orange County Public Schools’ student-generation rates, the development is expected to bring

about 125 children in total: 89 from the apartment homes and 36 from the townhomes.

Hattaway said the property owner also received approval from OCPS to build and agreed to pay school-mitigation fees, which OCPS uses toward the cost of building new schools or renovating existing campuses.

And in response to traffic concerns, Orange County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey said about 1,000 new residents are moving into Central Florida each week, but state law prevents local governments from refusing an application from a developer because of road-capacity issues.

Smith emphasized that with the millage rate at 3.25, there was no money to save for future projects. He then recommended the town consider increasing the millage rate from 3.250 to 3.7425 — an increase of 0.492.

“It would bring us $340,000 — that’s it,” Smith said when asked how much revenue the increase would generate. “So it’s not a lot of money, and it gets eaten up quickly when you have many projects to fund. But if we keep the millage rate exactly the same, I would only have about $548 to put toward all of these projects.”

Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn opposed any tax increase, but the council voted unanimously in favor of the proposed increase.

“We have roads to be maintained, sidewalks to be built … we have to do something to generate more money,” Windermere Council Member Bob McKinley said.

“Grants are not a given.”

Council Member Jim O’Brien agreed and said it was the council’s responsibility to provide a high quality of life for residents.

The town’s next budget meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 13, at Town Hall.

At least 20 residents present at the meeting opposed the proposed change, describing it as something you’d expect to see in a “cheesy advertisement” and a waste of the town’s money.

“This is something that has been part of the town for a long time,” said longtime Windermere resident Angela Withers. “Don’t change something unless you have a very good reason.”

If the town were to approve the change, Smith said it likely would keep the current stationery and company cards until they run out.

Replacing the town’s five entrance signs with the new motto, however, would cost $25,000, he said.

“If they wanted to roll it out and say, ‘Hey, here is the new brand,’ then we’d be looking at doing the five entrance signs,” he said. “And that would be $25,000 that I put it in the budget for next year. But other than that, we would just wait until things are phased out or cycled out before we would order new stuff. I wouldn’t want to waste what we currently have.”

After hearing from residents, Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn said the council will decide whether to change the slogan at the Aug. 14 council meeting.

With the Aug. 28 primary election just weeks away, the West Orange Chamber of Commerce is gearing up for an event that will allow participants to meet candidates.

WOCC has hosted its Hob Nob and Straw Poll every two years for decades, said chamber President Stina D’Uva. “We really do want our business members and the greater West Orange community to know who the candidates are and to get to meet them face to face,” D’Uva said.

Attendees also will cast votes during the straw poll. Everyone, including the candidates and their campaign workers, receives a ballot. Whether Democrat, Republican or no party affiliation, each person gets one vote.

WOCC’s straw poll uses official tabulation equipment from the Supervisor of Elections office, and its ballot is custom-made, because it also includes positions that aren’t necessarily located directly in the West Orange area.

atthew Borchert has a unique outlook on his job as the PGA Professional at Isleworth Golf & Country Club.

As someone who grew up in the area, playing his high-school golf at Dr. Phillips High in the 1990s, Borchert dreamed of one day playing the gated community’s famous course.

Now that he gets to do so almost daily as part of his job, he really is just happy to be there.

Eric Berggren A senior at Windermere Prep, Eric Berggren was part of the Lakers golf team that won the FHSAA Class 1A State Championship in 2016. The latest accomplishment for this standout was of a more individual nature: Berggren placed third at a qualifying event for the U.S. Amateur. The 2018 U.S. Amateur Championship will take place Aug. 13 to 19 in Pebble Beach, California.

What were your expectations going into the U.S. Amateur Qualifier?

You can never expect to qualify for a big tournament like this. There are so many good players — especially in Florida — so all you can do is play your best and see what happens. It was very exciting to make the cut. My heart was pumping, and once I saw that it was enough, I couldn’t get a smile off my face.

How excited are you for the experience of playing the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach?

Pebble Beach has been a course I’ve always wanted to play — my dad and I have been talking about it (for a while).

My mental approach is going to be like other tournaments.

I’m just going to have fun with it; it’s a pleasure to be there.

What do you enjoy about playing for the varsity team at Windermere Prep?

There’s definitely a lot of spirit, and we help each other out. That’s what I like about my team at Windermere Prep.

We always look for what we can improve on, help each other in that scenario and go out, play courses and have fun with it. It’s great.

Who is your favorite golfer?

I’m a little biased here because I’m Swedish, but Henrik Stenson.

I love his confidence when he goes out there.

I’ve actually talked to him in person, and he’s a great guy. I love the way he plays golf courses.

Of which accomplishment on the golf course are you most proud?

Winning the state championship. The year before we did it, we had

As a PGA professional, Borchert’s day-to-day responsibilities include heading up the golf instruction available at Isleworth. He teaches lessons and helps coordinate the golf-related services available to members.

One of the perks of being a PGA professional, though, is that they have their own tournaments, culminating in the PGA Professional Championship. That event took place in June in Seaside, California. The top 20 PGA Professionals from that event punched a ticket to the PGA Championship — one of professional golf’s four “majors.”

Borchert finished the event in Seaside as one of four golfers tied for 12th place at two-overpar, which was just enough to make the cut. With that, he now will have the opportunity to

Big stage awaits Borchert

In California, the Women’s 4+ boat placed 11th in the nation, and the Men’s 8+ boat placed 23 in the nation.

The women’s boat included Samantha Sizelove, Savannah Sellers, Destiny Scott, Meagan Goldsmith, Jessie Woy and

compete alongside the biggest names in golf at the 100th PGA Championship, set to take place Aug. 9 to 12 at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis.

A professional golfer for 12 years before he transitioned into instruction, Borchert said he appreciated the opportunity to be in the thick of a big tournament with high stakes once again.

“It’s funny how all the juices start flowing and how you want to be competitive among all your peers now,” Borchert said. “I kind of felt like if I just played my steady game, then I was capable of finishing in the top 20. … I’m really excited for my son to be there (at the PGA Championship) and maybe see Tiger (Woods).”

The PGA Championship will be Borchert’s second experience playing a major. Ironically, both opportunities came after he walked away from pro golf. In 2016, he accomplished a lifelong dream of qualifying for the U.S. Open when it was at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh.

Given that prior experience — and what he said is an improved outlook on the game thanks to life as a father (his son, Harrison, is 5) — Borchert is optimistic his trip to St. Louis will be an enjoyable one.

“I kind of feel like, going into this one, I won’t be so awestruck by the size of the event,” Borchert said. “I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m excited to play, because I haven’t been on this kind of stage in a couple (of) years.”

After a strong high-school golf career at Dr. Phillips from 1991 to 1995, Borchert played collegiately for the University of North Florida, turning professional afterward. He played

professional golf for 12 years after that on the PGA Tour and the Web.com Tour, with limited success.

Borchert said his best season on the PGA Tour was 2009, but even that relative success included examples of the issues that plagued his professional career. For instance, after shooting a career-low 66 in the first round of the John Deere Classic in 2009 — a score that had him in contention — he followed it up with rounds of 72, 72 and 75 to finish 65th, overall.

“That event kind of gives you an idea of how my career went,” Borchert said. “Mentally, I couldn’t get out of my way or let a bad hole go.”

Time and perspective have helped the Dr. Phillips alum to improve in that area. Although he says he still doesn’t boast a perfect temperament out on the links, Borchert said his work as a PGA professional — work where men and women who are very successful in other realms come to him to become better golfers — has helped his confidence.

“It made me realize that I was pretty good and that it’s just a game,” Borchert said, reflecting on how teaching golf has helped evolve his outlook.

“They’re having fun making 7’s, 8’s and 9’s (on a hole) — and I was always so bent over trying to make par or birdie. It’s given me a new perspective on golf.”

After all, life is good. Borchert and his wife, Julie, who he met while at Dr. Phillips High, have a home near Lake Whitney Elementary in Winter Garden.

Plus, as he will tell you, he’s got a pretty great day job.

“I’m working at the place I always wanted to play,” Borchert said.

The Storm Select U-14 girls lacrosse team, a local travel team based in the Windermere area, is on the road to Delaware.

The team is one of just 24 teams — spanning three age divisions — that has been invited to the 10th annual US Lacrosse Nationals.

The three-day event will take place Aug. 3 to 5 at the DE Turf Sports Complex in Frederica, Del. For Ann Bomleny, overall director of Storm Select Lacrosse and the varsity head coach at Windermere High, the achievement by one of the travel program’s teams is a milestone.

“To qualify for (Nationals) is a pretty big deal — in terms of the number of tournaments you have to win or place highly in to be considered,” Bomleny said. “It certainly represents well for the caliber of our players.”

The team has been training together since January and consists of players predominately from Orange and Seminole counties, including three — Morgan Gustovich, Mackenzie Morse and Gaby Castro — from the immediate Windermere area.

The team is coached by head coach Casey Perales and assistant coach Emily Noel.

50-plus qualifier tournaments, hosted by 15 sanctioned tournament partners of US Lacrosse, during the 2017-18 season.

In addition to a unique experience, the Storm Select U-14 team will get a chance to measure itself against the best in the country.

It is the only team from Florida and will compete in the 14U Division against three teams from New York, two from New Jersey, and one team each from Virginia,

Maryland and Minnesota.

As a team from a state such as Florida, where the game of lacrosse is still growing, it will be an exciting opportunity to compete against teams where the sport has a richer history.

“I think this is going to be a really big, exciting challenge for them — to compete against a high level of play against their peers from the Northeast,” Bomleny said.

“This will be a good opportunity

for them to rise to the occasion.”

Storm Select U-14 will begin play at US Lacrosse Nationals Aug. 3, with games at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Synthesis Multimedia Productions will livestream each division’s championship game on the US Lacrosse Facebook, Twitter and YouTube channels.
