City leaders gave the green light on a rezoning ordinance that allows for the development of 17 new single-family homes along East Oakland Avenue.

Commissioners approved Ordinance 18-23, which pertains to a 9.18-acre property generally located west of Tildenville School Road, north of West Colonial Drive and along the south side of East Oakland Avenue. The property, titled Oakland Hills PUD, has been rezoned from R-1 (single-family residential district) to Planned

County commissioners invited discussion on retail pet-sale regulations to explore policy options for protecting both animals and animal owners.

To discourage the demand that keeps puppy mills and kitten factories in business, Orange County commissioners directed county officials to draft a new animal ordinance that addresses retail pet-sale restrictions.

The proposal came forward following a growing trend of jurisdictions passing stricter regulations to curtail the sale of cats and dogs bred by high-volume animal-breeding facilities.

Puppy mills often subject dogs to unsanitary conditions, keeping them in crowded cages where they receive no exercise and minimal food and water. Kitten factories operate in much the same way.

The animals then are taken from their mothers earlier than recommended and end up in pet stores.

The Humane Society of the United States, an animal protection organization, estimates about 10,000 puppy mills presently operate in the U.S. The magnitude of the problem makes it difficult to combat, but several jurisdictions have passed policies placing stricter regulations on retail pet sales.

According to George Ralls, Orange County’s director of health and public safety, Florida is one of 16 states without a specific law that addresses commercial breeding operations.

He added that in Florida, there are 80 jurisdictions that ban retail pet sales, most of which are city governments and four of which

are counties: Palm Beach, Hillsborough, Seminole and Lake counties. Orange County does not have an ordinance on retail pet sales, Ralls said.

During the June 5 Orange County commission meeting, Ralls compared the ordinances for three of those counties.

According to Ralls, Palm Beach County implemented a ban on the retail sale of cats and dogs in October 2016, forbidding the issuance of new pet-shop permits. The county’s eight existing pet shops were exempt from the new ordinance but are required to obtain cats and dogs only from USDA-licensed breeders.

In February, Seminole County passed a law that prohibits the retail sale of animals, including in places such as flea markets, yard sales and public areas. It also required pet shops to use an adoption-based business model, meaning pet shops may only recoup costs incurred while caring for an animal and must produce certificates of origin to customers, Ralls said.

However, Palm Beach and Seminole do continue to allow pet sales by “hobby breeders,” animal rescue organizations and the county’s animal shelter. And in Lake County, only the county’s animal shelter, animal-rescue organizations and private animal owners are allowed to sell cats and dogs. Violations in each county are subject to fines of up to $500.

Fullerton, 17, is a recent Olympia High graduate who will head to the University of Florida this fall to study biomedical engineering.

He wants to pursue a doctoral degree and potentially go into research regarding oncology.

“I just had a few senior friends who told me about (NMSC) and they said, ‘Hey, you should try to do really well on this, because it’ll be important later on,’” he said. “...I took the PSAT, and I met the qualifications for NMSC, and I did a lot more research into the program.”

Fullerton learned in January that he was a finalist, but he had a decision to make: Would he go out of state where he wasn’t guaranteed a scholarship, or stay in state where he was guaranteed a full ride to a university?

“Because of the NMSC recognition, I received a full ride to the University of Florida. … This was nice, so I didn’t have to worry about the finances at all. I eventually decided on UF because of the reputation that it has as a top10 public university.”

Tatum, 18, is a recent West Orange High graduate who also will head to UF this fall, where she plans to major in microbiology. She sees herself going to graduate school and becoming a doctor in the medical research field.

“I was introduced to the whole (idea of) making sure you had a good PSAT score and all that by my cousin,” she said. “I studied really hard and kind of knew it was out there, so I made sure I did well on the test. The opportunity couldn’t have been any better, because just doing well on that one test got me a full ride to UF.” Tatum is also part of the Stamps Scholars program at UF and will spend the remainder of her summer studying abroad with fellow scholars in Mexico. At West Orange High, her extracurriculars included marching band and serving as president of the National Honor Society.

“I was very excited (about being a finalist) but at the time I really wanted to go to Duke,” she said. “...There was no way I could pass the opportunity of going to school for free versus paying.”

County to draft ordinance addressing retail pet sales

nance implementing the best practices from surrounding jurisdictions. Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs said she’d prefer an ordinance with firm restrictions.

Any resulting ordinance would be effective in municipalities without an existing retail pet-sale ordinance.

“I don’t have a problem with trying to be more restrictive and starting … because I have also had too many friends who bought their dogs from pet stores and the dogs came with a lot of problems,” Jacobs said. “The families kept them, because they fell in love with them, but they shouldn’t have been bred and had those problems in the first place. So I just think it’s a very unhealthy situation, and I’d like to see us take a strong position.”

Seminole County resident Katrina Shadix cautioned commissioners about USDA-licensed breeding facilities.

“One thing about requiring pet stores to sell only from USDAlicensed breeders is that the USDA is very short on officials and enforcement,” Shadix said.

“There’s a lot of violations that happen every year. There’s no way they could possibly enforce and know that these animals are being properly bred.”

Currently, there are about 1,900 USDA-licensed breeding facilities in the U.S. and about 100 inspectors, Ralls said. And according to the Humane Society, it’s rare for USDA-licensed facilities found to have repeated violations to have their commercial licenses revoked.

Jacobs agreed she felt an ordinance promoting adoption of animals in the county’s shelter and local rescue groups would be easier to monitor and enforce.

District 1 County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey emphasized creating an easily enforceable ordinance.

“Whatever we do in terms of an ordinance, we need to make sure we can enforce what we do,” she said. “I’m not a fan of putting language out there that we don’t then fund positions to enforce.”

Out of 50,000 high-school students with the highest PSAT/ NMSQT test scores this year, only 7,500 seniors will have received National Merit Scholarships for college.

And of those 7,500, at least eight West Orange-area students are among them.

Local students who received college-sponsored scholarships include: Olympia High’s Garrett Fullerton and Megan Galeski; West Orange High’s Sarah Tatum; Windermere Preparatory School’s Dale Hill; Lake Highland Preparatory School’s Jonathan Khouzam; and Cypress Creek High’s Kevin Wu. Students who received the National Merit $2,500 scholarship are Windermere Prep’s William Sealy and Olympia High’s Soo Min Kim.

But the names represent so much more.

The 10-year-old church is a melting pot of different cultures, magnified by the fact that many families have adopted children from other countries, creating an international atmosphere at the church.

The preschool is a dream come true, said Pastor William Karshima, who has led the church as senior pastor for four years.

“It has been on my heart,” Karshima said. “When we came we started noticing some needs in the church. I think … the key reason that made us want to open a preschool is talking to some of the families in the church and some families we know who were involved in adoption and foster

Katutis said this will be a typical preschool but the teachers will be trained in a social and emotional curriculum so they are prepared to work with children who might have difficulty adjusting to different environments.

“Our philosophy is that every child is a unique, special gift from God and deserves our time and our respect and our love,” the director said.

“We wanted to have a place that was a different … that kids who (have experienced trauma) have a place to come where they will be loved that way,” Karshima said.

“We came up with the name Go Love because of that. We felt that every child deserved to be loved regardless of where they came from and their struggles.

“They deserve to be loved the way Jesus intended,” he said.

The school will use the Frog Street Press curriculum, which includes a “conscious discipline” program that works for everyone, Katutis said. “(It) really promotes a classroom family,” she said. “You love each other, you pray for each other, you lift each other up. … We’re

The classrooms are broken down by age. There will be six students in the 1-year-old class, 11 in the 2-year-old class, 14 total in two 3-year-old classes and 18 4-year-olds with two teachers in the VPK class.

The staff is considering offering parenting classes once school is in session.

Katutis, a Winter Garden resident, came on as a consultant but ended up taking the full-time director’s position.

“I believe it totally was God pushing me out of where I was and putting me where I need to be,” she said. “Kids are my life.

I respect them. I love them. I always do what’s best for them.”

Prior to joining the Go Love team, Katutis worked for seven years at Christ the King Lutheran Preschool, in south Orlando. She has worked with children of all ages since 1999.

“Kids are wonderful,” she said.

“I think the reason I relate to them so well is I respect them. They’re not a pet, they’re not an animal.

They are a little person. They have thoughts, and they have ideas. If you respect that, they will respect you. Let them feel like they have something to contribute.”

Windermere teen needs kidney Matthew Bustamante is desperate to find a kidney donor who could save his life.

It was June 20, 2017, when the bad news arrived with no warning.

Matthew “Matt” Bustamante, 19, had just gotten a physical exam to check his health because he’d had trouble gaining weight.

His mother, Lisa Largue, had expected something benign, perhaps a thyroid issue, given her own medical history. But what they learned later came as a complete shock.

Bustamante was born with undersized kidneys that now threaten his life. At the time of diagnosis, his kidneys were functioning at 24%, leaving everyone baffled as to how he’d managed avoid showing showing any serious symptoms for so long.

“I still don’t really feel that bad considering how far along I am,” Bustamante said.

His kidneys now function at about 12%, and he is on several medications and adheres to a strict diet. He finds himself dealing with sleepless nights and unable to continue playing basketball due to fatigue, as his body diverts all its energy to operating his kidneys. He’s also had to put on hold his goal of working for Disney and pursuing a film career.

So far, eight people have been tested as potential matches for him, with no success.

Now, it’s just a matter of getting the word out. The family hopes to find a match before his kidneys reach 10% function, at which point he’d need to start dialysis.

“You never know, there might be people out there willing to donate kidneys to non-family members,” said his grandmother, Barbara Downing. “If he doesn’t get a transplant within two months, the doctor said he’s going to have to go on dialysis, judging by his numbers.”

Bustamante was placed on a national kidney waiting list.

However, the supply of kidneys from deceased donors has been unable to keep up with demand and he is running out of time.

His family hopes to find a living kidney donor to limit the wait time and because a transplant from a deceased donor versus a living donor has been shown to reduce a kidney recipient’s life expectancy. The family continues working to spread awareness of his situation and cling to the hope that they’ll find a match.

“It’s a big ask because you’re literally asking for a body part,” Downing said. “It could save his life.”

Preparing for band season

ore than 170 campers took part in Bridgewater Middle School’s 10th annual summer band camp in June. The camp was open to children in grades first through eighth. Campers were divided up by skill level and placed in either elementary music camp, beginner band, intermediate band or advanced band.

Choir goes to Ireland Stough lives in Windermere and is a member of the Garden Choir, which performed at the festival in early June. The Garden Choir was one of many choral groups from around the world that attended and performed at the Limerick Sings International Choral Festival at the University of Limerick in Limerick, Ireland.

“There were actually several days of performances,” Stough said. “We performed with two

other major choirs. We sang with the York College singers from York College in Pennsylvania.”

Garden Choir member Danita Dunn, who lives in Winter Garden, recalled what it was like to perform at the festival.

“It was just a truly remarkable experience,” Dunn said. “We had a chamber orchestra perform with us. We were in a concert hall, so the acoustics were fantastic. We were singing with another choir that made us (sound) even more powerful. And to be able to sing in that

venue, in that country in front of … many people who were there for the music was just incredible.”

Garden Choir Director Dr. Jeffery Redding served as the festival’s artistic director. He is also the choral director for West Orange High School, Dunn said.

“As a result of that (position), his choir was invited to attend,” Dunn said, adding that not every member of the choir was able to attend. “Everyone was given the opportunity (to go), but it’s an expensive trip, and you’ve got

home. So, there’s not a lot of time to socialize.”

Rex said the Garden Choir always is looking for new members. Those who are interested can visit the Garden Choir website to learn more. She said the Garden Choir rehearses during the school year at 7 p.m. on Mondays at the West Orange High School chorus room. They will start meeting again when school starts.

“Our entire mission is building community through song,” Rex said. “We are a community of people who love music, and it doesn’t matter if you’re a professional musician or if you’re somebody who likes to sing at home, you’re welcome to come.”

Windermere resident Nancy Rex, also a member of the Garden Choir, said the group sang seven songs during its performance.

“My absolute favorite part of the trip was getting to know the (Garden) Choir members better, because when we go to choir (rehearsals), you go in, you get there a few minutes early and get settled,” Rex said. “You might talk for a minute or two, and then you rehearse. You work. There’s no talking during rehearsal, which is how it should be so you can learn your music. And then afterward, it’s late and … people need to get

Walking dead invade Winter Garden

ozens of campers got a taste of working in the movie industry at the Florida Film Academy’s summer camp from June 18 to 22.

The theme of the camp was Zombies: Last Stand and included a lesson on zombie makeup and homemade blood. Campers learned about what it takes to create a movie and learned techniques ranging from planning, organizing and storytelling to filming, editing and producing.

Surrounded by greenery, it served residents of the small unincorporated community located among the former orange groves standing between Lake Apopka and Deer Island. Constructed around 1900, it was initially an office for a nearby sawmill. Ouida Madge Reeves Penkacik, 93, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 21, 2018, surrounded by her family at the Westminster Towers Health Center. She was born on June 19, 1924, in Ocoee, Florida.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 63 years, John Penkacik; her parents, Mason Clindon and Claudia Underwood Reeves of Ocoee, Florida; and brother, Dolphus Reeves, from San Diego, California.

Ouida was deeply loved and will be missed greatly by her children, Mary and Charlie Black, Peggy and Bob Terry, Cheryl and Joe Nastasi and John David Penkacik; her loving grandchildren, Jennifer and Mark Terlep, Brian and Laura Black, Leigh-Anne and David O’Regan, JaimeLyn and Bryson Womack, Patrick and Lori Terry, Joseph and Nicole Nastasi, Julie Nastasi and Brooke Esperanza.

She is also survived by her treasured great-grandchildren, Tyler and Abby Terlep, Calvin and Olivia Black, Keara and Declan O’Regan, Torah and Aspen Womack, Aidan and Ian Terry and Billie Grace Nastasi; by her very loved sisters-in-law and many extended family and friends.

Ouida grew up in Ocoee, Flor-

ida, and graduated from Ocoee High School in 1942. She attended nursing school at ORMC. Ouida fell in love with her U.S. Army guy from Buffalo, New York, who was stationed in Orlando and attended Radar School in Ocoee, where he discovered his smalltown Southern sweetheart.

She married the love of her life on August 29, 1944, at the First Baptist Church of Winter Garden.

They built their home in Orlando.

John and Ouida were lifelong members of First Baptist Church in downtown Orlando and founding members of the Downtown Baptist Church. During their many years of service, they found many ways to support the ministries – helping to establish the old skating rink and family skate nights, teaching young people and maintaining the mail list and weekly mailing of the newsletter to the families of Downtown Baptist. Ouida also enjoyed planning

and leading the senior adults’ activities and trips for many years.

Ouida, along with her husband, left quite a rich heritage of faith and family. The love and joy they found in their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren was second only to their love and devotion to their Father in Heaven.

During their last years, the pastor and members of Orlando Reformed Presbyterian Church have supported Ouida and John with encouragement, love and prayers. The family is thankful for this care. The family also is very grateful for the assisted-living and health-care staff at Westminster Towers in Orlando. The doctors, chaplain, leadership and caregivers of Cornerstone Hospice have provided a gentle transition through her final days.

Arrangements have been made through Collison-Carey Hand Funeral Home and interment at Ocoee Cemetery at a later time.

A memorial service was held at Collison-Carey Hand on Plant Street in Winter Garden at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 27.

Blanche J. Maynard, 84 of Winter Park, Florida, passed away on June 24, 2018. She was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, on Feb. 27, 1934.

Blanche loved being a good mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Maitland.

She also designed beautiful floral arrangements for many weddings and other events over the years.

BEING THE CHANGE Inspired by the life of his brother, Winter Garden resident Peter Cook founded a nonprofit named Largest Heart.

With a yellow bracelet that reads, “What Would Andrew Do?,” Peter Cook, a Winter Garden resident and founder of the nonprofit Largest Heart, does exactly that: What Andrew would do.

Andrew Michael Cook, Peter Cook’s brother, died in Chile at 39 years old in January 2017.

Andrew was well-known for having lived a life full of compassion for others and volunteerism, Cook said.

According to Andrew’s obituary, he worked with religious leaders in New York City to improve interfaith relations, served as a counselor to highschool students from wartorn Cyprus, volunteered for the American Red Cross and launched a “pay-it-forward” project to spur volunteerism in Chile, where Andrew had lived for nine years.

However, Cook was unaware of just how loved by the community his brother was until he attended his funeral and heard the stories — stories that both touched and inspired him, as they demonstrated just how large his brother’s heart was.

Following his brother’s death, Cook decided to do something to continue his brother’s legacy of volunteerism and came up with the concept of his nonprofit, Largest Heart.

“When I started diving into this, I realized how bad things really are,” Cook said. “After my brother’s death, and just seeing how he lived, changed my life.

Before, I was very all about me and building my empire. And just after seeing how he lived and how he paid it forward and how he treated other people — I’ve never seen anything like it. My life was never the same again.

He inspired me to make a difference in people’s lives and inspire change and to spread hope, love and knowledge. That’s what our mission is all about.”

Peter Cook is the founder of Largest Heart, a nonprofit that donates 90% of its proceeds to nonprofits that tackle social issues, such as homelessness, human trafficking, the food waste epidemic and related issues.

which they believe donations should be used, and purchase merchandise, such as T-shirts and tote bags.

Once a poll ends, the winning cause receives all funding dollars. Largest Heart works with Charity Navigator to identify the top 10 participating nonprofits in the winning cause, and people then vote on the best three. Ninety percent of all proceeds are then donated to those three organizations.

Cook, who comes from a business background, said he never foresaw himself leading a nonprofit organization and has been learning as he goes. He decided

to take an innovative business approach when coming up with the concept of Largest Heart to make sure other nonprofits also benefit.

To do that, Cook collects the best practices and case studies from the three nonprofits who receive money from Largest Heart. He then shares the information with other nonprofits tackling similar causes.

“Most nonprofits are really small,” he said. “So the question is, ‘How can you maximize your resources and why don't you partner with other small nonprofits fighting the same thing?’ If I can provide them with the best practices and case studies that show them how to do things better, that’s going to help them operate more efficiently and help more people.

And that’s ultimately the goal.”

When asked what he believed his brother would think if he could see what Cook has recently accomplished, Cook said his brother would likely urge him to continue.

“He’d say, ‘Continue to be the change you want to see in the world,’” Cook said. “Gandhi inspired my brother, and Andrew believed that if you had love in your heart, you’ll always do the right thing.”

SHUFFLE? A new proposal being pushed by the FHSAA to its members would dramatically alter the landscape in several team sports — reducing the number of state championships awarded and significantly changing the way teams are grouped to compete for those championships.

ddressing athletic directors and administrators from around the state at a recent compliance seminar, Justin Harrison — the Associate Executive Director for Athletic Services for the FHSAA — shared an interesting discovery.

He explained that he had been researching how the FHSAA has divided up its members into classifications over the years, and was surprised to find the status quo has been around for some time.

“The oldest handbook I could find was from 1931, and the classification was done based solely on student enrollment,” Harrison said to the group. “I talk to you today, in 2018, and classification is done solely based on student enrollment. Is it time for a change?”

For the FHSAA, the answer seems to be “yes.”

The organization has been busy meeting with athletic directors and coaches around the state in recent weeks, sharing information and gathering feedback on a proposal that would fundamentally alter the landscape in several sports: boys and girls basketball, boys and girls soccer, girls volleyball, baseball and softball.

In order to address problems such as blowouts in state tournament games, a downturn in attendance for playoff games and a general sense of an uneven playing field throughout the state, the FHSAA is proposing a reduction in the number of classifications and a wholesale change in how teams are assigned to a classifiSEE FHSAA PAGE 14

Alaska. I think (because of) the idea of it being “the Last Frontier” and I’ve always loved the outdoors. I’ve been to 47 of the 50 states, so I think Alaska is the next one I’d like to go to.

Outlined in the proposal is moving all of the listed sports to six divisions. For every sport beside boys and girls soccer, this would be a decrease from nine classifications — for soccer, it would be an increase, formerly having had five classifications.

The second change would be in how those divisions are assigned.

To determine what division a team plays in, all member schools with teams playing a particular sport will be ranked using “power rankings” — to be done via MaxPreps, which already does this on a state-bystate and national basis.

The top 64 teams in the state will be assigned to Division One, the next 64 teams will be assigned to Division Two, and the remaining teams will be divided evenly amongst the remaining four divisions, with the rural division (currently Class 1A) remaining as is.

The initial idea is to reassign divisions every two years, based on the average of a team’s power ranking over the past two years.

Furthermore, districts would be eliminated in the proposal. In Divisions One and Two, where there would be just 64 teams, every team will be placed in a 64-team postseason tournament after the conclusion of the regular season. Seeding will be based on the updated rankings at the end of the season.

In Divisions Three through Six, however, only the top eight teams in each of eight regions — as determined by the power rankings — would make the playoffs. This would be a departure from the current system in all of these sports, where every team — regardless of record in the regular season — gets the chance to compete in a district tournament where it can earn a postseason berth.

The hope for the FHSAA, which has thrown its support behind the proposal, is to implement the new system for the 2019-20 school year. For that to happen, the item would have to be met favorably as a discussion item during an FHSAA Board of Directors meeting scheduled for September, and then officially voted on at the Board’s meeting in October.

Gehrig Chambless put up some monster numbers as a senior for the Legacy baseball program this past spring, hitting .519 with 14 extra-base hits, scoring 32 runs and having 26 stolen bases on the year. A captain for the Eagles, Chambless helped the team earn a 16-11 record — its best to date — and its first win in a district tournament game. For his performance, he has been offered a roster spot at Palm Beach State, where he will look to make the team and begin his college baseball career, beginning in the fall.

What was it like playing for your father, Legacy head coach Jack Chambless, during your varsity career?

It was awesome. He is not only a great coach, but was extremely encouraging the entire time and always pushing us to be better.

I would have never done it differently — I’m so glad he was my coach.

Which game this past season was most memorable?

As far as games, it would be our (district tournament win) against Foundation Academy — coming back in the ninth inning and winning.

What are you most proud of from your time at Legacy?

I think to have as many wins this year as we had the last two years, combined, I think the team really came together well and it was cool to see that happen.

How do you feel you have left the program at Legacy?

I think it’s in a great place. I think it’s now reached a point where people are hearing about Legacy and it has become a place they want to come do, join and play baseball here. The program has improved so much.

THE CHATTER

What stood out about Palm Beach State?

They have an excellent baseball program. I just think it’s a great opportunity to have a shot at making the team and seeing how far I can go down there. I’m also interested in the business and film programs, academically.

What are you doing to prepare for your college career?

I’ve done a lot of working out this summer and also continuing to hit in the cages, practicing with my dad a lot. Getting bigger and getting faster — I’ve been trying to improve my “pop-time” and getting the ball out faster. That kind of thing.

What would your advice for a young catcher be?

I think just being a good leader — setting an example for everyone else but also being very encouraging, especially with the pitcher. You have to make sure you stay calm, so the pitcher stays calm.

What is your dream job?

I’ve kind of tossed it up in the air. I want to own my own business someday. The “out there” dream is also to perhaps be a director. Of course, my dream is also to get drafted — that’s every baseball player’s dream.

there is some resistance and caution. However, there also is plenty of preliminary support for it.

“I think (the proposal) has a lot of merit,” said Lisa Eaves, the new athletic director at Foundation Academy. “I think it’s going to allow dominant teams to not just walk through championships. It’s going to allow teams that are down, that are growing, to not have to pull out (of the state series) and go independent.”

Perhaps no sport better exemplifies why the FHSAA wants to shake things up than boys basketball. State semifinals and state finals in recent years have seen blowouts and running clocks with alarming frequency. Not surprisingly, attendance in Lakeland for the championships has gone down — and, in that, boys basketball is not alone. In fact, Harrison told those present at the meeting in June that overall revenue from state series playoff games in several sports has gone down.

“You would have thought, going from six classes to nine classes, that the total amount of money coming in would have increased — but it’s actually gone down,” Harrison said.

Instead, under the new system, powerhouse basketball programs such as Orlando Christian Prep, Oak Ridge and Blanche Ely — each of which cruised to state title this past season, winning their respective state semifinal games by an average of 28 points — would be competing for the same state championship.

to deal with, were this to come to fruition, is scheduling. District schedules account for a significant portion of any team’s regular season slate, so the absence of those guaranteed games could create some additional stress.

However, in the case of a school like Ocoee — whose district in some sports includes schools from Lake Minneola, Seminole

County and as far away as Ocala — it could be a plus.

“Definitely, in some of our sports it would be a good thing,” Ocoee Athletic Director Bill Alderman said. “We have to drive up to Ocala in some sports. So, financially, it helps us out.”

Harrison said the hope is that a lack of districts will empower individual schools and teams to

“I think the 64th team (the last team assigned to Division One) is not going to be real happy — and the 65th team (the top team assigned to Division Two) is probably really happy,” Griseck said.

Details will be monitored closely, with every person interviewed for this story expressing the desire to know more about the MaxPreps Power Rankings.

It does seem, though, that change of some sort is imminent, and many local coaches and administrators are doing their best to embrace what is to come.

“I do think this is going to happen and I’m trying to find all of the positives,” Doss said.

make schedules that make sense for their specific needs. That could mean scheduling teams closer to home to save on travel costs, and also not having to be in a district with a powerhouse that a program simply cannot compete with.

In a sport like softball, for example, enrollment-based classification has, in the past, had West Orange and Evans in the same district — despite the two programs competing at decidedly different levels.

Alderman said several of his coaches have responded positively to the proposed changes, viewing them as “a shot in the arm.” Windermere Prep Athletic Director Jacob Doss says he wants to know more about the details, but that the general idea is good.

“When there’s change, there is always going to be people that don’t like it,” Doss said. “Obviously there will be questions, but it’s moving in the right direction.”

While there would presumably be a hierarchy in the value of each championship — no one will confuse winning a Division Five title as being equal to the Division One title — the ability of more teams to have a reasonable shot is something local administrators seem to be responding well to.

“You have teams that had no chance of competing for championships who now will at least have a chance,” Alderman said.

Of course, even if the new system is implemented, there will be drawbacks. For instance, Mark Griseck, the head boys basketball coach at Windermere High, pointed out that rankings around the cutoff point for each division will make the difference between being a team that is a long shot to compete in one division and a

Two brothers, Alec and Nick Billings, opened their permanent location in March. They previously ran the business by appointment only from a warehouse in Ocoee.

“It got to the point where we were busy enough to give reason to have a retail space,” Alec said.

“When we found this space, we loved the character and the history. And being on (Highway) 50, it has a curbside presence.”

The building, constructed in 1955, was the home of Walker Brothers Millworks for decades.

Alec said he has driven by this building countless times since his family moved to Gotha 15 years ago.

“I remember driving by this building years ago and thinking it would be a cool place to have a business,” Alec said. “Little did I know it comes full circle.”

The older of the two brothers, Alec said he got into this line of work by buying estate-sale furniture and selling it privately. He realized he appreciated the craftsmanship of quality furniture, and he encouraged Nick to join him.

The business partners, who are Olympia High School graduates, began working for estate companies and private firms that wanted to clear out their furniture, and

Their showroom includes furniture and décor for living and dining rooms, bedrooms, patios and offices.

Merchandise is photographed and listed on the website, and the owners said their inventory moves quickly.

If someone is interested in selling items, they can email the Billingses with a description and photos. The brothers prefer to deal with multiple pieces at a time instead of individual items, they said.

A third brother, Derrick, helps occasionally by assisting in moving jobs.

Alec and Nick said their business was inspired by their parents, Rick and April Billings, who are Winter Garden residents.

Their mother is an interior decorator, and their father, a photographer, has always owned his own businesses.

The name Rhino Décor is a nod to their father, who has always lived by the “rhino mantra” and has a collection of close to 2,000 decorative rhinoceroses. He even gave several of the smaller ones to his sons to place around the store.
