The upcoming Windermere Village shopping center located at 5799 Winter Garden Vineland Road just finalized a deal for a new tenant.

Juan Rios, the owner of the popular Agave Azul Mexican Restaurant in Orlando, will be building a second location in the 10-acre shopping center that he expects to start construction on in March for a targeted opening in late summer 2018.

“His program allowed me to witness the transparency of other fathers and the hardships they deal with being a young father,” McClain said. “I was able to also interact with thriving father role models. … It helped a lot because my father did not play a strong role in my adulthood.”

“Some of us have to sacrifice and say, ‘These kids are our future,’” said Nkrumah, who has three children and lives in Winter Garden with his wife, Leslie. “But the main reason I continue to work with them and dedicate my life to them is because I don’t want them to keep getting girls pregnant. …

These kids are ruining their entire future.”

aki T. Nkrumah could share the heartbreaking stories for hours — examples of teenage boys who got girls pregnant and then were on their own to figure out how to pay child support or even stay in their child’s life.

He has dedicated his life to mentoring and improving the parenting skills of these young men so they can be positive male role models in their children’s lives.

When Orange County Commissioner Betsy VanderLey was tasked with recognizing someone locally for doing work that matters, she immediately thought of Nkrumah for the District 1 Citizen of the Year Award.

He is the CEO of Young Fathers of Central Florida, a nonprofit he started in 2006.

“Haki, for 10 years now, has been investing in young fathers,” she said. “There are numerous programs for teen mothers but none that I was aware of for teen fathers. … We want to hold them to the high standards of being

good parents, yet they have no more tools than the young women.

“His influence in the community by doing this is profound and generational,” VanderLey said.

“The statistics on what happens with children who don’t have an involved father are frightening.

So it was a no-brainer to have him as my first District 1 Citizen of the year.”

HELPING YOUNG FATHERS

The 11-year-old organization helps boys ages 14 to 24.

Nkrumah’s goal is to establish a statewide fatherhood initiative.

He tells of one boy whose pregnant girlfriend moved back to Canada. She refused child support because she would lose all the free services her country provided.

The teen father couldn’t even claim the child, Nkrumah said.

In other cases, he said, these young fathers are staying away from their babies so the mother can receive services.

Too often, these young boys don’t have a job that can adequately support a baby, either, Nkrumah said.

last decade, he said he has discovered that this epidemic covers all ethnicities and income levels.

He has come across poor white and black teens, undocumented Hispanic fathers and sons of millionaires.

According to Nkrumah, more than $100 million in services was allotted in 2016 to teen mothers; young fathers received nothing. What’s more, he said, many agencies don’t even have a space on their intake applications for the father’s name.

“We’re the only nonprofit 501c3 in the state of Florida that services teens and young fathers,” Nkrumah said. “So we get calls from everywhere.”

He said 90% of fatherhood programs in the country don’t begin engaging fathers until an average of 26 years of age.

At YFCF, the goal is to improve the parenting skills of young fathers and improve their wellbeing, prevent them from becoming parents until they’re ready and increase educational and vocational opportunities for them.

Eight programs are available: Teen Fatherhood Academy, Parent Training & Development, Dad-to-Dad Mentoring, Fathers Support Group, Gents to Gentlemen, Young Fatherhood Institute, Young Father’s Initiative in County Jails and City Wide Young Father’s Initiative.

Emerson McClain was a college student when he met Nkrumah in 2008. Now 30 and living in Orlando, McClain said Nkrumah was a source for guidance for him and

Persistence has paid off for Nkrumah. He approached the Walt Disney Company about grant money and was told his program needed to be established and have a proven track record. He was told to come back in four years, so he did, and he received money for his program several years in a row, nearly $30,000 annually.

The University of Central Florida donated another $30,000 one year, and the city of Orlando has given $10,000 for about eight years.

Nkrumah said he is considered the national authority in the country; he has written books and given lectures all over United States. His dedication is so strong that he didn’t take a paycheck for the first four years of operation.

Instead, he learned to write grants, applying to 51 and receiving funding from 49.

“One place gave us $250,” he said. “Every little bit helps.”

F

or Windermere couple Michael and Hannah Ammar, their jobs never feel like work — in fact, they’re full of magic.

Michael Ammar is a close-up magician — named in 1999 as one of the most influential magicians in the 20th century by “Magic Magazine” — and Hannah is a fourth-generation magician.

A KNACK FOR MAGIC

Michael has won numerous awards from the International Magic Awards and the Academy of Magical Arts and is often referred to as one of the best sleight-ofhand magicians in the world.

But magic wasn’t always his career goal. Before trying his hand at it in college, he was going to school to study business and eventually take over his family’s restaurant. He became close with his mentor, Canadian magician Dai Vernon, who was known for sleight-of-hand technique.

Growing up in West Virginia, Michael Ammar was initially unsure about his prospect of competing with other magicians. But after becoming the second American in the 45-year history of Switzerland’s World Congress of Magic to win the Gold Medal in Close-up Magic in 1982, it became apparent that he might have a knack for it.

“I got the gold medal at that event, and only two Americans had ever done that before so I felt like, ‘OK I’ve got something here and I should play this hand out,’” he said. “It turned out to be a good

idea. I worked out a deal with my family — give me two years and if I can do magic, I will, and if I can’t, I’ll come back to the restaurant.”

But magic had grown into a passion, and the more time he spent with it, the better he got. Slowly, his reputation grew, and he even appeared on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” and “The Late Show with David Letterman.”

“I just loved magic and loved the experience and remembered seeing a few tricks growing up and loving that,” Michael said.

“The truth is it’s a really special gift you’re giving someone, that amazement. … It’s an intellectual delicacy, and it’s nice to have that gift.”

He and Hannah met at the Academy of Magical Arts Award Show. Hannah is a fourth-generation magician — the daughter of magician Frances Willard and granddaughter of magician Harry Willard, who performed as “Willard the Wizard” — and was a student at the time. Her family often joked that they were terrified she was going to marry a doctor or lawyer, but not a magician.

“I’m the daughter of a magician, so I was born into magic, really,” Hannah Ammar said. “My grandfather and great-grandfather were also magicians. My mom would do shows and have my brother, sister and I dress up as elves and be her helper on stage. We were doing what she did as a child — she had to help her father on stage.

“When I went to college I wasn’t thinking about magic at all,” she said. “I was a student earning my degree, and my mom invited me to the Magic Castle awards show one

A MAGICAL TEAM

The two sometimes perform magic together, but Hannah prefers to stay behind the scenes. In 2010, according to his website, the two began stage performances of “The Spirit Cabinet,” a mysterious Victorian illusion dating back four generations in Hannah’s family.

Before they had children they traveled the world together for performances and business trips.

Even though Michael still travels for portions of the year performing or teaching, they’re able to continue to work together. Hannah handles the graphic design, illustration, developing his websites and managing his product line.

“Michael is the performer and creator — he’s the mastermind on the technical aspects of magic,” Hannah said. “I’m kind of the jack of all trades. If he needs a video or

website, I learn how to create that.

If we need a product developed I have to source things. It’s kind of a fun challenge — it’s always different. To work at home it gives us a lot of freedom — when our kids have something going on, we can go to it. It’s nice to have the flexibility.”

Michael remembers how much harder it was to find the secrets and learn the magic back when he was first starting out as an aspiring magician. The difference today is that it’s readily accessible. And now, the mentee has become the mentor: Michael has written more than one dozen books, published a magic magazine, and produced three audio cassettes and more than 50 magic videos and DVDs. “It’s like a quantum state where it’s secret but not secret at the same time,” Michael said. “It’s covered by a billion other things if you’re not interested, but if you’re interested, you can find out anything.

It’s all out there. (Back then) you really wanted to take your secrets to the grave. This is what I get to do — this never feels like work.”

And although Hannah likes to be behind the scenes, she never grows tired of watching her husband perform.

“Michael’s sleight-of-hand was new to me when I met him,” she said. “Really I appreciate (magic) as a spectator more. I like watching the audience respond to it — for me, that’s the thrill.”

to my uncle. And then from there we started expanding.”

The restaurant, Rios added, uses traditional Mexican recipes with a modern touch. The most popular dishes at the Orlando location are the Chicken Chipotle, Maji Fernandez and Al Pastor Tacos, which is pork shoulder marinated in about 16 different spices that comes with onions, cilantro and pineapple.

“The Chicken Chipotle is a popular dish,” he said. “It’s stuffed

with Spanish ham and Mexican Oaxaca cheese, and it has a little kick with the chipotle pepper. Our house margaritas are also really popular.”

Another popular menu option is the carnitas, he said, which is a Mexican pulled pork dish cooked for more than 24 hours with Mexican beer and raw sugar cane.

Rios said he is also looking into adding a location in Maitland and Lake Nona in the future.

Palm Lake students win at Beta Nationals A team of students from Palm Lake Elementary won first place at the Beta Club National Competition for their website design.

STAFF WRITER DR. PHILLIPS It’s only been one year since Palm Lake Elementary School launched a Beta Club, but already, members have attained national recognition for their accomplishments.

The club was started last fall by enrichment teacher Abigail Carter, who had seen the benefits of Beta Club after her daughter joined one in middle school.

“I wanted something to take the kids to the next step,” Carter said.

“So this was a way to mesh together things that we were already doing well at Palm Lake.”

The club grew to more than 60 members its first year, and in November 2016, nearly all of them competed at the National Beta Club’s state convention.

“At that convention, we won more than 11 competitions,” Carter said. “And once you place first, second or third, you’re eligible to compete at the national level.”

At the end of June, Carter took more than 40 students to the national competition. Students competed in visual arts, performing arts, science and math, and a handful walked away with wins.

One student came in second place doing a solo dance performance, and a team of students came in the top 10 for the Tower Power competition.

But the biggest accomplish-

ment for the Palm Lake Beta Club was the team of four students who built a website.

It was a last-minute addition to their lineup for nationals, and the challenge was not a simple one.

“They had to create a website and couldn’t use any template program,” Carter said. “They had to write it themselves with code.

But one of students had really latched onto coding and taught himself, so he was the lead.”

Even the parents were concerned about the challenges the students faced, which included competing not only against elementary students but also middle-schoolers.

“Some of the parents came out of the meeting and said, ‘I don’t think they can do this,’” Carter said.

But the students were confident.

They spent two days creating their website from scratch and even created video content and animations to show to the judges.

When they were announced to have made it to the top 10, the students were thrilled, Carter said.

“They knew they were in the top 10 the night before, but when they announced the winners, at that point (the students) really got excited because they were in the top five,” Carter said.

The team not only was in the top five —it won first place, besting even its middle-school competition.

enhanced hospice services at an inpatient unit at Health Central Hospital in Ocoee.

The hospital plans to build a 100-bed rehabilitation center on its campus; 10 of those beds will be managed by Cornerstone Hospice and Palliative Care, a not-forprofit community organization that provides comfort and care to Central Florida families experiencing life-limiting illnesses.

Williams spent most of her career at South Lake Hospital in Clermont. In her last seven years, she was a case manager in the intensive-care unit and emergency room, and that’s how she became interested in hospice care.

“I found people places to go, whether it’s a nursing home, home with hospice, rehab,” Williams said. “In the ER, it was more finding something immediately, but in ICU it was speaking with families, determining how to find a place for them. Most people work for a living and can’t take them home with them.”

Mike Conley Hospice House, a Cornerstone Hospice facility in Clermont, frequently took patients when she called.

Because she grew up in Clermont, she frequently took care of people she knew, and that’s what got her interested in hospice. She also cared for a friend in a nursing home before she died.

“I often worked with the hospice team and was always impressed by the compassion and high-quality care they provide to patients and their families,” she said.

Williams recently joined the West Orange Health Alliance board, and she and another member, Lynn Walker Wright, began discussing the lack of a freestanding hospice facility in West Orange.

“Lynn said, ‘Why don’t we have one?’ I said, “Let’s start one,” Williams said.

About three weeks later, Michael Mueller, CFO of the hospital, shared with the board a project that was in the works — a hospice unit on the campus.

The two women are working together to raise funds. Walker Wright is chair of the Capital Committee, and Williams is chairing the Friends of Cornerstone Hospice, which organizes social events to monetarily sup-

“I hope to grow this community organization to help raise awareness about hospice care and the peace of mind it provides to patients and families facing a lifelimiting illness,” Williams said.

According to Walker Wright, the first floor of the five-story facility will have 10 private rooms decorated with homelike furnishings. Family members will be able to spend nights with the patient utilizing pullout beds, in-room showers and refrigerators.

About $1.7 million of the $3.6 million needed has been raised.

“Our board is dedicated and invested in bringing this facility to our West Orange residents, as it is desperately needed,” Walker Wright said.

The closest facilities like this are either the Mike Conley House in Clermont or the Cornerstone Hospice House at Orlando Health Downtown Orlando.

“I have a special fondness for hospice, having experienced firsthand the services provided for my family upon the loss of my parents,” Walker Wright said. “I have also seen the care provided to one of my closest friends who passed at the age of only 43.”

A groundbreaking is planned in the next two months, and fundraisers will be ongoing.

“This is a whole new endeavor for Cornerstone, for Health Central, for me,” Williams said. “It’s exciting. It gives me something to do and it makes me feel good.

Bernest T. Jones, of Saffold, Georgia, and longtime resident of Ocoee, Florida, was called home Friday, June 30, 2017.

Born in 1934 in Saffold, Georgia, Bernest met the love of her life, and they married in 1952.

They started a family and moved to Florida in 1960.

She worked reclaim for WinnDixie for many years. She was a very loving wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother. She will be dearly missed.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Ferriel “Buddy” Jones Jr.; her loving parents, Florence and Ernest Temples; her sister, Irene Cobb; three brothers, Henry Temples, Johnny Temples and Tom Temples; her son, William E. Jones; and two greatgrandchildren, Abigail and Wesley Orr. She is survived by two children, John Jones and Gloria Dale Jones; two brothers, Carl Temples and Wesley Temples; three grandchildren, Natasha Smith, Tabatha (Tabby) Butler and Carmen (Missy) Jones Catania; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

David Lawrence Marsh, age 66, of Ocoee, Florida, passed away on Wednesday, July 12, 2017, after a heart attack. He was born Dec. 23, 1950, in Corpus Christi, Texas, to Bob and Lucille Marsh.

He was a graduate of TulosoMidway High School, Class of 1969. David honorably served in the United States Air Force for 22 years. His tours of duty included Vietnam and Desert Storm. He retired as a technical sergeant.

David was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and brother, and a caring friend who will be greatly missed by all who knew him and will never be forgotten.

David is survived by his wife, Marty; daughter, DeAnna (Patrick) Savage; son, Matthew (Elizabeth) Marsh; stepson, Aaron (Megan) Stauss; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; brother, Donald; the mother of his children, Jeanne Bartlett LaMar; and other relatives and longtime friends. He was preceded in death by one grandson, as well as both of his parents.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 29, 2017, at West Orlando Baptist Church, 1006 E. Crown Point Road, Ocoee, Florida 34761.

Riley Thurman Thomas, 23, of Ocoee, passed away Friday, July 21, 2017. He was born Jan. 19, 1994, to Gary and Deana Thomas in Ocoee and lived his whole life there.

He was home-schooled and played football at Foundation Academy. Riley was an electrical lineman at Valiant Power and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He attended Orlando Free Presbyterian Church.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by his four brothers, Gary III (Grace), Jesse, Benjamin and Ethan; and his grandparents, Gary and Sandy Thomas. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Jack and Daphine Spivey.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m.

When one door closed on Windermere Prep alum Barry Babbitt’s college basketball career, another opened on the golf course. Now a senior golfer for Rollins College, Babbitt just won a prestigious tournament in Virginia.

At its closest, the action was 150 miles away.

At its farthest, it was north of 700 miles.

Regardless, it was a busy and exciting weekend of baseball and softball for three teams from Windermere Little League.

Both the league’s Little League Softball (ages 10-12) All-Stars and its Juniors (ages 13-14) All-Stars made the trips to the southwest coast of Florida for their respective state tournaments.

There, in Fort Myers, Windermere’s Little League Softball team played hard but ultimately was defeated in each of the three games it played in pool play.

Included in those losses was a 5-1 loss in the first game of pool play to Fort Myers American — the eventual state champion.

As for the Juniors, they traveled to Sarasota. There, the local boys won once and were defeated twice. In an ironic twist, their first game — and first loss — also came against Fort Myers, which also went on to win the Juniors state championship. Windermere’s victory came by way of a 16-3 rout of Callahan.

Both teams finish their runs with district and section championships to their credit.

Then, of course, there was the team that traveled across a number of state lines — Windermere’s Minors (ages 8-10) Softball AllStars. Representing the state of Florida, the local girls traveled to Clarksville, Tennessee, for the SEE LITTLE LEAGUE PAGE 13

eople in the Windermere Prep athletics community probably don’t remember much about Barry Babbitt’s golf career with the Lakers.

Why would they?

Babbitt, himself, said he was not very good in high school — and then there’s the fact that his time on the hardwood for the Lakers boys basketball team was significantly more memorable.

Windermere Prep basketball coach Ben Wilson said Babbitt was one of the best players to have ever come through the program, and his strong play for the Lakers earned him a scholarship offer to Brown University.

It might come as a surprise then that Babbitt’s most significant athletic achievement since graduating from Windermere Prep in 2013 has come on the golf course — and it happened just a few weeks ago.

Babbitt, who will be a senior golfer for Rollins College in Winter Park this fall, won the Eastern Amateur Golf Tournament in Virginia earlier this month. Babbitt finished at 16-under-par for the tournament, shooting a 65 on the final day — including six birdies and just one bogey — to seal the deal.

The event is a 72-hole stroke play event that features some of the best amateur golfers in the nation, and several of whom’s past winners have gone on to careers in the PGA Tour.

“It was really special to be in the same conversation as some Hallof-Famers,” Babbity said. “(It) is pretty unique, and not a lot of people can say it. I was just hitting my driver really well. It was a short course and everybody was hitting irons and I was hitting my driver and it just made it so much easier.”

Babbitt counts the win at the Eastern as his biggest achievement yet, noting it has opened some doors for his budding career.

The road to this point, though, has involved some twists and turns that few could have foreseen in the summer of 2013 when he left Central Florida to begin his college basketball career.

Speaking of Dr. Phillips High basketball, alumnus Shane Larkin is bringing his professional basketball career back to the United States. Reports on NBA. com suggest that Larkin — who played in the Euroleague the past year — has signed a free-agent deal with the Boston Celtics. It is currently unclear whether that deal is guaranteed beyond training camp this fall. Previously, Larkin has played professionally for the NBA’s Dallas, New York and Brooklyn franchises.

Madeleine Reynolds out-swam all her competition at the Florida Age Group Championships two weeks ago and came home with the medal to prove it. She finished with three golds, two silvers, one fourth-place finish and the High Point award for the winning the most points for a 10-year-old female at the state competition.

What was it like competing at the Florida Age Group Championship?

Once I got the 50 backstroke, I knew I’d need a couple more wins to get the High Point award. Once I did the 200 IM, I was happy, but my coach told me I was still one more first place win away.

What do you like about competing in swimming competitions?

I get to race different people, and it challenges me.

How do you prepare for each race during competitions?

My starts — to get off the block quickly — and my breakout underwater, which is when you do your underwater swimming and you can’t breathe on your first stroke.

Before the competition started, did you think you would be able to win the High Point award?

Yeah. We looked at where everyone seeded, I knew I had a chance.

William Floyd said replacing Miller — whose tenure included some of the athletics program’s best years — was not easy, he believes he has his man in Jerry Shafer, outgoing athletic director at Leesburg High.

“I was looking for somebody with a proven track record. …

Somebody who wants to make a good situation better,” Floyd said. “At his past school, (Shafer) had really good relationships with the community.”

Shafer comes to the Warriors’ Winter Garden campus after spending the last two years at Leesburg High.

Before that, he began his career in Baltimore County, Maryland, later spending six years in Colorado as a track and cross-country coach, winning

a state title along the way.

Although thankful for his time at Leesburg, Shafer said he is more than excited about his new opportunity at West Orange.

“West Orange is what I would consider a blue-blood school — a school with rich tradition,” Shafer said. “If you go to West Orange, you want your kids to go to West Orange. It’s a community school. … As an athletic director, those are dream schools.”

Shafer inherits a program with just one opening — the Warriors are in need of a girls bowling coach — so he said he is going to focus a lot of time on getting to know his coaching staff and athletes.

Babbitt hitting his stride First, after arriving at Brown, he was told he likely would have to sit out his first year on campus — something that didn’t sit well with him. As a result, Babbitt transferred to a Division III program in Kentucky, where he could play right away, but the move to a small school in a more rural area never felt right.

“I felt so out of place, and that’s when I realized I needed to come home and focus on academics,” Babbitt said. “I picked up golf for fun at first, but then I realized I was making some progress.”

Indeed, Babbitt’s reunion with golf in the summer of 2014 largely coincided with some newly discovered free time now that he wasn’t training all the time for basketball. As the summer went on, he liked what he saw and figured he would at least inquire about trying out for the team at Rollins, where he had transferred to study math.

Getting the staff at Rollins, a Division II program, to take him seriously might have been harder had he not already had a friend on the team. That said, he

tried out and did well enough to make the team. Babbitt had to redshirt during the 2014-2015 school year, but in the fall of 2015, he made his debut as a college golfer for the Rollins Tars. “(I remember) walking up to that first tee — it was unlike any pressure I’ve ever felt before,” Babbitt said.

The Lakers alum surprised himself by playing well in that first tournament, but that did not mean everything was smooth sailing after. The level of play of Division II golf was better than he expected. In addition, he was still wrestling with the idea that he was no longer playing basketball.

One turning point that helped Babbitt wrap his head around his new path was when he qualified to play in U.S. Open Sectional tournament in 2016. Although he did not advance to the U.S. Open, he got to play a round with professional legend Vijay Singh, and the experience whet his appetite for more. Making the field for the U.S. Open is now one of his top goals.

Another turning point happened more recently, when Babbitt was able to channel the

type of golfer he wants to be — an aggressive golfer, much the same as he was on the court.

“For a while, I just didn’t have an identity on the golf course,” Babbitt said. “Everybody knew who I was when I played basketball — I had a certain style. I’d say it has taken me a good three years to find my swag (on the golf course).”

As he prepares for his senior season at Rollins — and hopefully a professional career beyond it — Babbitt is focused on improving his short game.

He keeps tabs on the Lakers, marveling at the growth of the program that won just eight games when he was a sophomore, and is still friends with Wilson, his former coach.

As he moves forward, he said it is the support group at home, on campus and at his home course — Grand Cypress in Horizon West — that has helped him make the transition.

“I’ve had a lot of really helpful people in my life that have pushed me in the right direction,” Babbitt said. “For me to see (my career progress) so fast, it’s just surreal.”

Windermere Little League’s Minors (ages 8-10) All-Stars received a send-off from Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn July 20, ahead of their trip to Tennessee.

Tournament of State Champions. Competing against state champions from states including Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee and Alabama, among others, the local girls played hard and placed fourth, winning twice but later losing to North Carolina, 4-1.

With those three teams each being eliminated, the summer Little League season is officially finished in West and Southwest Orange County. In addition to the three teams from Windermere that won district championships, there were four teams from Dr. Phillips Little League that did so: DPLL’s 9-year-old, 10-year-old, 11-year-old and its 12-year-old All-Stars teams all won district championships this summer. The 10-year-olds also won their Section 5 Tournament and came within a game of advancing to the state championship.
