Brown was interested in working in education because of two things: his love of history and his passion for sports. In his 32-year career with Orange County Public Schools, he was able to share both with students in several area schools, including West Orange High and Southwest Middle.

He was hired in June 1984 by West Orange High’s new principal, Joe Worsham. It was his first interview with OCPS, and he accepted.

Brown came to Central Florida from Missouri, where his first teaching experience was at a K-12 school with 800 students. Walking into a high school of more than 2,000 students was a shock, he said.

“One specific memory that sticks out about that first year was on the first day of school,” Brown said. “As I moved through my schedule, with each one at a different classroom, I finally got to my seventh-period class of world history and walked in and found 53 students waiting for me.

I didn’t know if it would stay that way, but wasn’t too concerned. …

The class ended up with about 36 students. … I still remember that my teaching load that year was six classes with around 230 students. That was normal at that time.”

A few later, he switched to American history.

“I thoroughly enjoyed history and wanted to get others to understand not only the interesting things that have happened in the past, but how those events connect and impact what is taking place today in their own lives,” Brown said. “Also had grown up involved in sports, so I also wanted to coach.”

He was hired as head coach of the girls basketball team, as well, and even coached both girls basketball and varsity girls volleyball for a couple of years.

“The best part of my 30-plus years in education has been the

relationships that I have been blessed to experience with fellow educators, students and athletes,” he said. “In every school I have been assigned, it was always about creating a family atmosphere and providing support to others. I only hope that was accomplished for others as I know it was for me.”

In 1991, Brown, who was still the girls volleyball coach, was convinced to take over as athletic director by Worsham and Al Saour, the outgoing athletic director. Because he couldn’t serve in the new role and continue as a coach, he talked soccer coach Mike Armbruster into become volleyball head coach, and Brown served as assistant coach.

Two years later, he took the assistant principal’s position at Jones High.

LASTING MEMORIES

“Although I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every position and every school that I have been blessed to be assigned to, my favorite times would have to be my first and last assignments — my years at WOHS as a teacher and coach and to return later as an assistant principal and then my last years in the district at Blankner K-8,” Brown said.

He said his most memorable moments were at West Orange.

He always will remember world history teacher Linda Tesauro serving as a mentor to him and many of the other new teachers, giving advice and sharing ideas.

“Despite the size of the school, it was a very pleasant and supportive atmosphere with a strong family atmosphere and closeness,” Brown said. “This feeling was due in large part to Mr. Worsham and a very close social studies department. I made great friends with great teachers such as Linda Tesauro, Pete Abatiello, Sharon Mulligan, the two Cindys (Doerges and Alderman), Ogie Keneipp, Chris Stone, Greg Robinson, Steve Swank, etc.

the best department chairs, Sharon Mulligan, that I have worked with,” he said. “She was the constant as that family feel continued as many of us left and others came in.”

Brown was principal of Southwest Middle School from 200810, and he said he wishes he could have been there longer.

“I appreciated the support of our PTSA as we conducted cottage meetings when I first arrived there so that I could meet and listen to the parents,” he said. “I regretted not having a few more years there, as we were making strides as it related to campus beautification, adding additional courses to the schedule and bringing in new teachers to add to some very good and dedicated teachers already on campus.”

His final assignment was at Blankner School, a K-8 in Orlando.

WEST ORANGE Plans for a new residential development on acreage near Lake Roberts and Walker Pond Road come at a time when West Orange is booming.

Although developments are cropping up across the area, a different mindset is taking place at the neighboring Windermere Country Club, where a separate project has been ongoing as residents work to oppose the development of the club’s golf course.

LAKE ROBERTS RESERVE

First, plans for a new 110-acre gated housing development near Lake Roberts — south of Stoneybrook West Parkway, near Walker Pond Road — are currently in their fledgling stages.

The Walker Pond acreage is under contract for purchase and development by builder Taylor Morrison. However, all plans for development still are under staff review, said Randy Morris, who is involved in the project as principal of RM Strategies Inc. Current plans include 60 acres dedicated to preserve and the remaining 50 acres to have 92 single-family homes, with prices ranging from $390,000 to $1 million, Morris said. The development — Lake Roberts Preserve — would be located on Walker Pond Road acreage and sits adjacent to Lake Roberts. The development also would have central water and sewer provided.

“We’ve been working with the city now for over a year with the issues of the annexations, utilities and things like that,” Morris said of the land, which is currently unincorporated. “Things change, but it’s very close to what would be presented to the city commission for approval.”

WINDERMERE COUNTRY CLUB

One of the retirement gifts he received was a Shutterfly book his wife, Kelly Moss Brown, created using photos of him in action on the field and in the classroom.

It also included several pages of letters written by former students and colleagues. There were messages that likened him to a father figure and said he made the school a family. One note let him know he changed one student’s perspective of school, allowing her to excel and flourish. Others acknowledged his leadership skills, his impact on students’ and teachers’ lives and his “heart of gold.”

Now that he’s retired, Brown hopes to continue working and having a positive impact on students and educators.

“I’m waiting for God to open the door that he wants me to enter,” he said. “In the meantime, we have two new grandchildren (who) are both less than a year old (who) need spoiling when the time is right.”

In a completely separate issue, residents in communities of the Windermere Country Club are wrestling with golf-course owner Brian DeCunha’s desire to develop the property.

Windermere Country Club LLC wants to develop the current golf course into 95 single-family residential lots and has submitted an application to Orange County for the redevelopment.

DeCunha purchased the golf course in April 2011, but under a 1986 agreement between the county and the original golfcourse owners, the county owns the country club’s development rights as part of the club’s County Estate Cluster District plan.

Leigh Ann Dyal, president of the Windermere Country Club Homeowners Association, said residents are hoping the county does not give up those rights.

“We’re just trying to save the golf course as permanent open space,” Dyal said. “We’re hoping it would possibly become a golf course again. We’ve seen vegetation there our whole lives. (I’ve) lived there my whole life. ... To see it look the way it does is a shock.”

The school will operate on a four-by-four schedule, meaning the traditional school year will be broken into two semesters where students have four classes per semester. Students also will have a chance to visit college campuses on a monthly basis starting in the eighth grade.

The school will offer multiple sport programs, including rowing, lacrosse, basketball, boxing and more, Barfield said.

Barnett said he has been involved with the Orange County Public Schools system for 15 years.

He wanted to create a privateschool model through the “eyes of educators,” so he met with aspiring teachers, administrators and local community members to launch BPCA. BPCA will require students to wear uniforms, including a dress shirt, pants or skirts and a tie.

Beta Preparatory Collegiate Academy will open its doors at 7501 W. Colonial Drive, Orlando, for the 2016-17 school year.

“The school’s mission is simple: to provide a comprehensive, high-quality college preparatory education that results in 100% of our graduates enrolling into college,” BPCA Superintendent Earl Barnett said.

Barnett said the three main foundations of the school are college preparation, community service and social justice.

Students will be required to research their community, identify an issue, throw an event related to the issue and then present potential solutions to the school in order to graduate. This is on top

of the required 50 to 100 hours of community service students need to graduate, Barnett said.

“We don’t utilize our youth like we’re supposed to because there are a lot of young kids with great ideas,” Barnett said. “The one thing we want to do is, we don’t want to teach our kids to be employees. We want to teach them to be employers so we focus on those entrepreneurial-type things.”

The school also will emphasize STEM curriculum to help prepare its students for a workforce that values those specific skills.

Barnett said the school also will work to become a partner in the West Orange community. It will offer free workshops and tutoring on weekends, along with a food pantry and a West Orange flea and farmers market.

ing complaints from residents regarding aggressive dump-truck drivers, the Winter Garden Police Department is making changes to the way it patrols the area near Stoneybrook West Parkway and Marsh Road.

“The complaints are that they’re driving at high speeds and that they are using the left lane to go straight across the intersection instead of using the proper lane,” Lt. Scott Allen said. “We’ve gone out and worked on enforcing it in order to try to reduce it. It’s just very difficult when you’re dealing with commercial vehicles, because they seem to communicate about what’s going on, so we get out there and start working, but they very quickly know that we’re out there and they slow down and start doing the right thing until we leave.”

To compensate, WGPD recently partnered with the Florida Highway Patrol for assistance.

A local dump-truck driver, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, believes the blame does not fall solely on the dump-truck drivers.

“There’s a lot of people complaining about truck drivers, and I don’t think it’s fair,” he said.

“They should look at themselves also, because I see a lot of cars and SUVs driving a little aggressively on the road in that area.”

The WGPD has marked the area as a target area given the frequency of speeding vehicles.

“The area that this is happen-

ing in is one of our target areas anyhow, not just for the dump trucks,” Allen said.

The truck driver said the dump trucks are in the area because drivers are hauling dirt to Interstate 4. He also said the area was a truck route years ago before a community was built around it.

Some residents, such as Lisa McWhirter, who lives on Stoneybrook West Parkway, said she understands why the dump trucks are there but wishes a few changes could be made to quell the problem.

“I understand that the trucks are needed in order to haul materials used for all the construction going on,” McWhirter wrote in a Facebook message. “It would be great if they could avoid the roads during the main traffic hours of rush hour and school zone times.”

Jennifer Johnston, a 12-year Winter Garden resident, said she recognizes truck drivers aren’t solely to blame but stressed the added danger.

“The problem is magnified when these trucks are involved because of the sheer size, the weight of the vehicle and the damage it could cause, including loss of life,” she said.

The truck driver said a few bad truck drivers have sullied the reputation for all of them.

“There’s a minority in our industry ... (who) are driving aggressively,” he said. “It’s always the minority that ruins it for the majority.”

Model student GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER WINDERMERE Like many 18-year-

olds throughout West Orange, Makaila Nichols celebrated one of her life’s milestones earlier this month when she graduated from Windermere Preparatory School.

But Nichols’ high-school experience was far from ordinary.

In addition to earning her diploma, Nichols spent much of her teen years jetting off to New York for her job as a professional model. And when she discovered she was one English credit short of fulfilling her graduation requirements, the staff at Windermere Prep tweaked the curriculum to allow her first book, “Blatantly Honest: Normal Teen, Abnormal Life,” to count for school credit.

“It’s kind of like advice for teenagers,” Nichols said. “I talk about things (such as) bullying, addiction, sex, drugs, body image, peer pressure and a little about myself and being in the fashion and entertainment industry. So it’s kind of like a book geared toward helping teens relate to someone, understand that they’re not alone, and kind of have someone to be like, ‘Oh wow, this has happened to her. I guess I’m not the only one.’”

Nichols was 14 when a model scout discovered her while she was shopping at the Mall at Millenia.

She first signed with Wilhemina Models and now works for New York-based One Management.

WHAT NOW?

With her high-school diploma in hand, Makaila Nichols now plans to study business administration this fall at the University of Central Florida. She plans to continue modeling from time to time, but she also hopes to write some novels or screenplays and start her own company or outreach program to help other teens and young adults.

The agency requires her to spend about one to two weeks there each month. Although her schedule did not leave much room for a social life, Nichols managed to complete high school before the rest of her class by taking some online courses from Florida Virtual School.

In “Blatantly Honest: Normal Teen, Abnormal Life,” which will be released Oct. 3 by Brown Books Publishing Group, Nichols shares her experience not only with the pressures of working for the fashion model industry but also with bullying she endured.

“It has made me grow up really fast since I started when I was 14,” she said. “I was always in and out of school, and when I did show up everyone was like, ‘Oh Makaila is back, blah blah blah.’ And I had to develop thick skin because I was always told, ‘Oh, you’re too fat,’ or ‘Oh, you need to lose an inch,’ or ‘Oh, you need to lose five pounds,’ or ‘Oh my God, you look so skinny it’s disgusting.’ It was always something.”

The bullying led to an eating disorder, which Nichols has since overcome. She is now 5-foot-11

and 130 pounds, and although she knows that is a low number for someone of her height, she said she is managing her weight in a healthy manner and is no longer insecure about her body.

“I was in a stage where I felt like I was imperfect, but now I love my body and I love who I am, and I love food,” Nichols said, laughing.

When Nichols’ father, Steve Nichols, heard of the rough time she was having at school, it broke his heart, especially because he personally knew some of the kids.

He already has read her book and said it reveals much about his daughter’s psyche and experience in the modeling industry.

“It’s very intriguing from a teen’s point of view,” Steve Nichols said. “It’s very eye-opening from a parent’s point of view, and as her dad, certain parts of it were very hard to read, only because she spoke from the heart. She spoke from experience, and I’m very proud of her for stepping up and trying to make a difference.”

Sarah Jane Fowler Bekemeyer, “Jane,” a lifelong resident of Winter Garden, died Thursday, June 16, 2016, in her home surrounded by her family. She was 85 years old and had been married to Harold L. “Lee” Bekemeyer for 66-and-one-half years.

She was born on May 26, 1931, to Harold E. and Virginia Britt Fowler in Winter Garden, Florida. She graduated from Lakeview High School. She received her LPN license and a real-estate license after her high-school graduation.

She owned a children’s clothing store, The Bonnie Shop, in downtown Winter Garden during the early 1960s. Jane’s family owned vegetable farms and citrus groves in Winter Garden, part of which were located

The Ocoee Little League Tournament of Champions team came up just short in last week’s District 14 Tournament, falling to Winter Garden in extra innings in the championship. Ocoee went 5-1 in the tournament.

of Champions teams for Winter Garden Little League and Ocoee Little League met twice in a matter of six days — in pool play and in the District 14 Championship — and each game was decided by just one run.

And, although it had been Ocoee Little League’s 9-yearolds that emerged victorious with a 9-8 win when the teams met in pool play June 11, it was the team from Winter Garden that survived the extra-inning affair June 16.

Winter Garden Little League’s 9-Year-Old All-Stars topped Ocoee 9-8 in seven innings to secure the championship in a game of which both teams should be proud.

“They were intense games,” Winter Garden head coach David Ocasio said, reflecting on the two meetings between the teams. “(Ocoee is) a very good team. I just think our team, you could see it in their eyes in the top of that seventh inning … they knew that we were going to win that game.”

Both teams finished the annual tournament with 5-1 records.

Several former football stars from West Orange High, including University of Kentucky wide receiver Garrett Johnson, put on a camp for area youths June 18 at Walker Field in Winter Garden.

A proposal to amend the way teams earn a spot in the state playoffs in highschool football took a big step forward after the FHSAA’s board of directors meeting June 14.

The original changes proposed — eliminating districts in favor of a point system — was amended for classes 5A to 8A. Under the amended proposal, districts would remain and the champions would earn automatic playoff berths — but the remaining playoff spots would go to “wildcard” teams based on the point system.

Classes 1A to 4A would eliminate districts and determine playoff teams by the point system.

Next for the proposal is the FHSAA’s athletic directors advisory committee in September, after which it will go before the board for a vote.

What was the championship game like against Ocoee?

That was the most exciting game I have played in. It was hard to stay focused. I just had to believe in my teammates.

Which pro baseball team is your favorite and who are your favorite players?

The New York Yankees. My dad’s favorite team is the Yankees, so I like them, too.

My favorite players are Derek Jeter and Brett Gardner. Derek Jeter influenced me and Brett Gardner is a good player.

What is your favorite part of playing baseball?

Hitting. You can hit the ball, and if you get on base, you can steal.

What is the farthest you have hit a ball this season?

Probably to the fence — on the ground. That felt good.

Welsh knew the players who are leading his Winter Garden Squeeze in batting average and hits (Cody Burgess), RBIs (Tyler Halstead) and runs scored and stolen bases (Kyle Corbin) long before they arrived for the first day of practice this summer.

Welsh, who is in his first season as the manager of the Florida Collegiate Summer League franchise, knew Burgess, Halstead and Corbin back when they were in Little League.

Nearly a decade later, the hot bats of the locally- based trio — Halstead and Corbin graduated from Olympia High while Burgess is a West Orange alumnus — have helped to propel Winter Garden (7-5) to a strong start to the summer that has the thirdyear FCSL franchise within one win of matching its win-total from 2015 and tied for second place in the standings.

And, although increasing the number of players with local ties was always part of the plan when Welsh and Squeeze General Manager Adam Bates sat down to discuss their vision for the team, the way things have come together for Winter Garden in the first quarter of the 2016 campaign has been a pleasant surprise.

“I couldn’t be happier,” Welsh said. “These kids love coming to the ballpark.”

For Burgess, who played for the Squeeze in 2015 as the club limped through a forgettable season, the leap from cellardweller to contender has been a nice change of pace.

“Last year, it was really tough,” said Burgess, whose .400 batting average and 18 hits lead the team. “Me, being the person I am, I hate losing.”

While Burgess is readying for a transition from Polk State to Florida Southern, Halstead is excited just to be playing baseball at the college level again — and making the most of it, too.

After beginning his career at West Florida, the former Titan saw his time with the Argos cut short after an injury. Lots of hard work along the road back for Halstead has led to an chance to play again, this time for Winthrop — an opportunity Welsh and the Squeeze have helped to facilitate.

“We got word to Winthrop that this kid is the real deal,” Welsh said of Halstead. “They fell in love with him and offered him a spot.”

Although Halstead is looking forward to the opportunity at Winthrop, he said being on the field for the Squeeze has been therapeutic in its own way.

“I can’t tell you how much I missed (playing baseball),” Halstead said.

While Halstead has led the team in RBIs (10) this summer, another former Titan is the most likely player on the Winter Garden roster to find his way home. Kyle Corbin, who will be a junior at Bethune-Cookman this fall, leads the Squeeze in runs scored (10) — a stat he has helped to create with his ability to steal bases (eight). “(Coach Welsh) is letting me run — I’ve got the green light all the time,” Corbin said.

SQUEEZE TO HOST MILITARY ALL-STARS It won’t count toward the standings, but when the Winter Garden Squeeze take the field Friday, it will be a special occasion nonetheless.

The Squeeze will host the U.S. Military All-Stars in an exhibition at 7 p.m. at Heller Bros. Ballpark on the campus of West Orange High. An extended pre-game ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The game is part of the U.S. Military All-Stars’ Red, White and Blue Tour, which includes four games against opponents from the FCSL. The U.S.M.A. is a team made up of players representing all branches of our nation’s Armed Forces.

the first thing that may strike onlookers at a Winter Garden game, the left fielder is a wellrounded ballplayer with tons of potential, the way Welsh tells it. “(Corbin is) a kid that has, probably, the best tools on the team in terms of the total game,” Welsh said. “He’s a fivetool type of kid.”

In a league whose primary focus is rooted in self-interest — college players come to improve their game as individuals over the summer, often with pro scouts in attendance — being competitive can help to establish a team camaraderie during the two-month season.

Turns out, winning can do that.

“It’s night and day,” Welsh said. “When you win, winning begets winning. They’re in that atmosphere (now).”

Parros’ road to Rio It was the first time he had ever left the state to compete.

“I was one of the youngest guys there that year, because there were college guys and highschool seniors, and I ended up placing seventh,” Parros said. “I missed it by a few slots. ... All of that came together that summer to put in my head that the Olympics is something I would like to make.”

At that point, Parros knew he needed to pursue running fulltime.

He ended up running a 45.71 his senior year and earned a full scholarship to the University of North Carolina.

After college, Parros was given the opportunity to come train with Derrick White’s group, Lifespeed, in Clermont and jumped on it. He made the move and trained with the group for two years before switching this year to Pure Athletics — which trains at the National Training Center in Clermont — under Gary Evans and Lance Brauman.

Now, Parros trains five days a week with Pure Athletics, putting in three to four hours per day. And his training is paying off — at the end of 2015, he was ranked No. 12 in the United States in his event.

“I played ice hockey for seven or eight years, and I just loved it,” he said. “I jumped around sport to sport, and hockey was my real, first true love. I still miss it, and I’ll go back to it one day.”

At the Olympic trials, he will compete among the top 28 men in the country, hoping to make the top six and represent Team USA in Rio. Throughout his career, there are many people who have impacted Parros in one way or another — his mother and wife among them — but it’s his coaches who have played some of the largest roles in shaping him.

“All of my coaches have had a positive impact on me in some way,” he said. “It’s cool to be able to call them up and let them know how I’m running and feeling and ask their opinions.”

The 25-year-old grew up in New Jersey playing ice hockey until his high-school years, when he began to play basketball as a means to keep him in shape. He hadn’t considered running until his mother and his gym coach both encouraged him to pursue track and field.

His mother, aunt and grandfather had all been competitive runners in school, so he decided to give outdoor track a shot.

“I figured it wouldn’t hurt,” he said. “It’d keep me in shape, and that year I ended up setting the New Jersey freshman all-time (record) in (the) 400. I held it for about a week and another kid broke it by half a second. That kind of put in my mind, ‘OK, maybe I could really do this.’”

As his sophomore year rolled around, he set a school record of 47.5 in the 400 meters and was regarded as one of the top sophomores in the country.

However, reaching for the Olympics hadn’t occurred to him until his junior year of high school, when he went to the USA Track and Field Junior Nationals in Columbus, Ohio.
