Barbecue to benefit Blue Line Alliance The Ocoee organization will host a family-friendly barbecue on June 29, with all proceeds going to law-enforcement agencies and their families.

There’s more to Fourth of July than fireworks, friends and festivities — Blue Line Alliance wants to remind Ocoee of the law-enforcement officers who protect their family members and neighbors.

A pre-Fourth of July barbecue will be hosted on June 29 at Orlando FFL, 306 Ocoee Apopka Road, with all proceeds going to helping law-enforcement training and families who have lost someone in the line of duty.

Blue Line Alliance was founded by certified law-enforcement officer Marc Bernstein in 2018 with the goal to provide training, equipment and financial help to law enforcement agencies and their families, according to its website.

Fundraising was the most practical way to help, he said.

There’s a lack of funds for community law-enforcement officers, a shortage of officers and old equipment. Blue Line Alliance wants to “fill that void,” according to its mission.

The organization has started working with a SWAT team in Kansas City to provide firearm

resources. It has also worked with a small police department in Georgia to provide new bullet proof vests.

The organization is currently reviewing four new applicants for a partnership, Bernstein said.

The barbecue on Saturday will include vendors such as Orlando Harley-Davidson, the United States Conceal Carry Association and Bang Energy. There will be local restaurants providing food, as well as bounce houses for children and a batting cage.

Hosted by Orlando FFL, an Ocoee firearms and supplies store, the owners will have their liquor license approved for the day and will serve drinks, too.

Orlando FFL also will be a vendor selling firearms, supplies and classes it offers at the store.

Guests can sign up for conceal carry classes and tactical training courses, all offered at the store.

Charter school could get backyard farm A local aquaponic garden program could garner funds and teaching moments for students at Oakland Avenue Charter School.

Backyard Farm Express wants to establish an aquaponic garden on the grounds of Oakland Avenue Charter School, and representatives spoke at the June 11 Oakland Town Commission meeting in hopes of getting the elected officials’ support.

Co-owner Mark Pester said he has been in contact with OACS Principal Pam Dwyer, who has expressed an interest in having the farm. This would be the sixth farm built and managed by BFE; the last one was constructed at Hope Charter School, in Ocoee.

The cost to build the farm is about $39,000, and this is secured with local donors. Pester said when all the waterbeds are full of lettuce and the tomatoes and cucumbers are at their peak, this farm has the potential to earn up to $80,000 annually. Ten percent of the gross proceeds would go to the school. BFE provides the staff for the actual farming.

“Health belongs to everyone, not just the elite who can afford good food,” Pester said.

The commission gave the consensus for Pester to pursue potential donors for the project.

IN OTHER NEWS n The commission postponed the vote on the site-plan amendment for The Avenue at Oakland apartment complex.

This is Neighborhood 1 of the Longleaf at Oakland plannedunit development which encompasses about 16 acres and is proposed to hold 350 multi-family dwellings. n Under the consent agenda, commissioners approved the expenditure of $108,818.15 to make amendments to the design of the roundabout planned on Oakland Avenue near West Colonial Drive. The funding will come from the accumulated transportation impact fees.

MetroPlan is providing funding for improvements to the roundabout design, but the town is responsible for design and permitting costs.

The improvements will include changes to the intersection, an extra lane heading south, signal timing and rerouting of the West Orange Trail. n Mayor Kathy Stark proclaimed June 11, 2019, Glenn Burns Day in the town of Oakland. Burns made extensive contributions to the town. He wrote the application for Oakland Avenue to become a state-designated scenic byway, he documented the history of the town, he protected the history of the African-American Historic Cemetery, and he served on the board of the Friends of Lake Apopka. Burns died May 11 of Lewy body dementia.

Golf course owner faces fines TIM FREED MANAGING EDITOR

A golf course in one Winter Garden community continues to sit overgrown and unused — but not without a price.

Winter Garden’s Code Enforcement Board voted at its June 4 meeting to cite Miguel Vidal — the new owner of the Stoneybrook West Golf Club — a fine of $2,000 per day regarding several code violations.

The citation comes about less than five months after the golf club closed abruptly in January.

Vidal purchased the club following the closure but since then has not maintained it. The fairways, putting greens and bunkers have become overgrown with foliage.

Code violations cited against Vidal include scattering of refuse, discharging foul water or depositing decaying matter, and excessive growth of grass, weeds and brush.

“There’s been a new owner who (has) purchased the golf course, and the maintenance of the course has not been kept up — the city cited them and we came to the code board,” Winter Garden Community Development Director Steve Pash said. “It was a packed house — 200 or 150 (people). There were a lot of people from the neighborhood.”

The board issued a fine of $500 per parcel on four parcels, totaling $2,000 per day, Pash said.

After dozens of meetings with the HOA’s attorney, golf-course investment companies, owners and managers of other courses, real-estate agents, other communities that own their golf course and communities where their course has closed as well, the golf course eventually was purchased

by Vidal on March 29. He also owned Legends Golf and County Club in Clermont, though he previously had no experience operating a golf course, according to the letter.

Shortly after the purchase, Vidal asked the Stoneybrook West HOA to financially support him in reopening the golf course through a $50-per-home-per-month payment for the first two years — about $735,000 per year without ownership or membership in the golf club, according to the letter.

The HOA declined the request, and the golf course hasn’t been maintained since.

The letter adds that Vidal no

longer owns Legends after defaulting on his own payments and that property values in Stoneybrook West are being impacted as the course becomes more overgrown and neglected.

Pash said Vidal currently is going through steps to bring the course back into compliance, adding that Vidal had stated at the June 4 meeting that he plans to have the course mowed.

However, as of Sunday, June 16, areas of the golf course still were overgrown.

What has happened at the Stoneybrook West Golf Club is part of an ongoing trend throughout the state, City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said.

“This is happening all over Florida with people in golf-course communities — a lot of golf courses are struggling,” he said. “It’s not unusual for owners to come in and just stop maintaining the golf course and try to pressure people into letting them redevelop the property or force them into getting so many members. This is not unusual — this is commonplace now in Central Florida.”

Despite the concerns of residents regarding property values, Denise Gregorie, of Clock Tower Realty in Winter Garden, said the demand for homes in Stoneybrook West is higher than ever.

“People are upset thinking their values are going down, but honestly, I have buyers wanting to still get in there, because it’s more than just the golf course,” Gregorie said. “It feeds to great schools, it’s a great location, and (it has) the amenities — the pool, the tennis courts and the walkability of the whole neighborhood.

“My buyers are looking to buy into that; the golf course is secondary,” she said. “It’s not really coming into play for what they’re looking for. I look at the values from year to year, and they’re higher than they were. I don’t see a decline that people are talking about. I expected to honestly see that, and I didn’t. I think Winter Garden is holding the value.”

Vidal and the Stoneybrook West HOA did not respond to repeated requests seeking comment for this story.

The ordinance will allow for the property at 8 N. Highland Ave. to be sold by the city and developed into a three-story, 60-room boutique hotel. Currently, the space is occupied by a single-story, masonry building constructed in 1964 and is home to a digital media company.

City staff recommended the funds from the sale be used for parking revitalization downtown.

The ordinance would rezone the land from residential to commercial.

City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said the hotel is a “great opportunity” for the city and a way to help the city remain viable and vital long-term.

“We don’t see really any negatives with the hotel,” Bollhoefer said.

Several Winter Garden residents and business owners voiced their support for the project at the meeting, wishing to see more foot traffic for downtown businesses.

A NEW COMMERCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Another project, known as the Tucker Oaks Development, would require a rezone of the the property at 15500 West Colonial Drive to a planned commercial zone to allow for construction of 84,400 square feet of commercial buildings.

Construction was possible for the project under the current zoning, but developers applied for rezoning before breaking ground.

“We have worked with them and asked them to go through the (planned commercial development) zoning process which allows us to put greater restrictions and stipulations and have

Entrepreneur hopes to revive citrus plant Gary Hasson, a local business owner, has big plans for a historic citrus packing plant in Winter Garden.

A piece of West Orange history may be given a new chapter under the watch of local business owner Gary Hasson.

Plans for the revitalization of a local historic citrus packing plant, located on Tildenville School Road, passed its first reading for rezoning Thursday, June 13, bringing it one step closer to final approval by the Winter Garden City Commission.

Hasson, who has been in the renovation business most of his life, has plans to repurpose the historic building nestled between the West Orange Trail and Tildenville Elementary School, into a neighborhood-oriented market to serve the community surrounding it.

According to city records, the packing plant was built before city zoning and building codes as part of the South Lake Apopka Citrus Growers Association, which formed in 1909. The plant’s citrus processing ended in the 1990s.

“As a resident of Winter Garden, my vision is to restore the old citrus packing house to its old glory and honor the families and history of the citrus industry in our community,” Hasson said.

“I’ve grown citrus in a small way most of my life, so it’s dear to my heart. And as a history buff, I think it’s important to preserve our roots.”

Hasson wants to fill the historic building with local businesses that serve the neighborhood that has grown around it throughout the years as a “mixed-use community center.” He said the property will be home to small local businesses, office spaces, eateries and an art center. Hasson, who has a few businesses of his own, will also have a space there.

“We will be a family-oriented center,” Hasson said. “No bars or clubs. And we will have a green belt and safe play area for the kids facing the trail.”

Hasson said he plans on making this a “green” project, prioritizing an effort to eliminate the use of plastic by the vendors and generally being more environmentally-friendly.

“We will reward those who take alternative transportation to our project,” Hasson said. “We want to promote walking, biking or taking golf carts to our project.

We plan to have at least 30 golf cart spaces and between 125 to 150 bike racks on property, with bike washing and repair shop on site.”

Through the rezoning process, the project was presented at several community meetings during which local residents raised concerns about the potential impact to the neighborhood concerning mostly traffic and safety with the layout of the building, according to city documents.

To correct these, the city will adjust the speed limit and size of Lakeview Reserve and build a tabletop-style speed bump on the section of the West Orange Trail to the north of the property, along with other safety modifications. City staff also will work on a long-term solution for returning Tildenville School Road to a two-way street, according to a report from Winter Garden city staff.

Eco n o m i c Deve l o p m e n t Director Tanja Gerhartz said it is wonderful when communities have walkable areas where people can go and relax. Having a project like this along the trail would be a good amenity to the area, Gerhartz said.

“It’s going to be a great project, and the fact that we’re able to keep the packing plant and he’s going to lovingly restore it — that’s a bonus,” Gerhartz said.

Should the application earn City Commission approval, Hasson will begin looking for tenants in July.

“Our goal is to be a fun place to relax, enjoy, work, and take in the history that was the foundation of our community,” Hasson said.

The recent sale of a lakefront Winter Garden estate has set a record for luxury home sales in the city.

A custom-built home dubbed the “Casa De Leon Estate” sold in April for $3.475 million, making it the highest-priced residential sale in Winter Garden to date, said Joyce Marsh, regional of manager of Regal | Christie’s International Real Estate, the company that handled the listing and represented the seller.

“This was a masterpiece (home), to say the least,” Marsh said. “It was an absolutely beautiful home that exudes the ultimate in Florida luxury living.”

The two-story, 11,650 squarefoot home at 17819 Westbay Court in Deer Island sits on a private, 1.6-acre peninsula that fronts Johns Lake. The custom home was built in 2010 and boasts seven bedrooms, seven luxurious bathrooms, two half-

bathrooms and panoramic views of Johns Lake from almost every room. Two of the bedrooms are master suites, and the home also includes a 1,500-square-foot guest suite, Marsh said.

“The home has 700 feet of lake frontage, so that’s quite incredible in itself,” Marsh said, adding that the home’s original owners were hands-on with the design of the home. “Everything was built with attention to detail. It’s a very special property. We were very happy to help the sellers achieve this record-breaking price, too. It’s in an incredible location, and almost every room has a view.

The owner took great care to make sure that everything was just perfectly situated.”

Additionally, the custom home comes equipped with a five-car garage, an in-home theater, a game room, an elevator, an exercise room with a sauna, an infinity-edge pool, a dock and a boathouse.

“The kitchen was designed

Marsh added that the name of the home, which translates to “the house of a lion,” was inspired by the original owner’s wife’s zodiac sign.

“The reason why it was named that is because the wife of the (original) owner was very instrumental and involved with the design of the home,” Marsh said. “She happens to be a Leo, and that’s why they named it ‘Casa De Leon.’”

Growing up in Mexico, Zenovio Salgado and his four brothers spent much of their time in the kitchen with their mother and grandmother. They helped with taste-testing, preparing ingredients and even with selling some of the culinary creations that came out of their family kitchen.

“They (were) always cooking, and we (were) always walking around sticking our fingers in the food to taste it and watching (them cook),” Salgado said. “Sometimes, we helped a little bit. One day, we would chop vegetables … and one day would make tamales. We would spread the masa (for) the tamales and sell the tamales on the street.”

Since then, the brothers have moved on from selling tamales on the street, but those early days in the kitchen ended up influencing them as adults. Those days inspired them to open San Jose’s Original Mexican Restaurant in 2000 in Orlando. Today, the restaurant has five locations throughout Central Florida, with a sixth location opening in July in Tavares.

The fifth and newest location recently opened in Winter Garden at 16112 Marsh Road. The Winter Garden restaurant has been

under a soft opening since earlier this month, and a grand-opening event will be held toward the end of the month.

“We love what we do,” Salgado said. “I started working in restaurants in the ’90s. … The idea to open a restaurant (came to us) because I love the sensation of when people are satisfied with the food. … I love to satisfy the customers.”

The brothers named the restaurant after their father. San Jose’s serves authentic Mexican cuisine, and each meal is made to order from scratch using only fresh ingredients.

“By the time you order, we start working on it,” Salgado said. “I can tell you that 80% of our food, we make in-house, but for a lot of stuff, we have to buy it (elsewhere such as) a lot of our produce. For a lot of products, it’s almost impossible to make it, like we don’t make tortillas (in-house), because we need more space.”

The restaurant offers lunch and happy hour specials each day and a late breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays. For those looking to feed large parties, the restaurant offers catering services.

Franco’s to host painting benefit for cancer patient Jackie Martinez is fighting breast cancer for the third time in 10 years, and this time it has metastasized.

It was a decade ago that Jackie Martinez was diagnosed with breast cancer, endured chemotherapy and underwent breastremoval and reconstructive surgeries. She thought the disease was behind her.

But the 48-year-old MetroWest resident was left disabled after doctors determined the cancer had spread in 2011 and suggested she have radiation on her pelvic bone. Today, she walks with a cane and sometimes drags her leg because the pain is so intense.

In 2017, doctors found a tumor just outside the implant and ordered more chemotherapy plus radiation.

Last year, Martinez felt a lump on the left side of her neck; doctors diagnosed her with Stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.

Her treatment includes chemo injections and oral medication.

Her body tolerates the medicine, she said, but she often is exhausted. This makes it hard to be there for two of her three children — a 13-year-old daughter and 19-year-old son — who still live at home.

“I was told there’s no cure for Stage 4,” she said. “It’s just pretty much chemo and treatment for as long as my body can tolerate it. At that end point my body rejects the

Martinez’s friend, Debbie Calderon, shared the wreaths on Facebook to increase sales. Susan Ratcliff, Ocoee High School art teacher, contacted Calderon with an idea she said could raise more money for Martinez, as long as she had a space to hold the event.

Ratcliff, owner of Strut the Brush, is teaching a painting class, and for $35, participants will create a colorful beach scene through a step-by-step process. Ratcliff is donating all of the fees minus about $100 for the supplies.

“The first place I asked to host it for us was Franco’s (Pizzeria), and they were very happy to do it,” Calderon said. “They said, ‘Of course we’ll accommodate you.

So many people did so much for Debra that we’ll give you the space to do it.’”

The community gave its full

support to Franco’s last year when its owner, Debra Nix, endured a long battle with cancer, so the restaurant is eager to give back to the community. Painters also can purchase a baked-ziti plate dubbed the Jackie Special for the evening.

“People have left things at Franco’s for Jackie,” Calderon said.

“I see so much good in people.”

Martinez said she is overwhelmed by the generosity of Ratcliff, Franco’s and area residents.

“I think it’s unbelievable,” she said. “I don’t know them, and for them to even allow this to happen, to help me out in this way, it’s amazing.”

Not only is Martinez fighting for her life, but she’s facing exorbitant hospital bills after losing her insurance. She has applied for emergency Medicaid so she can schedule a PET scan imaging test that will determine if her treatment is working.

To help pay down her medical debt, Martinez has been making and selling holiday and themed wreaths.

Frances Jeanette Sadler, age 92, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 11, 2019. She was born Oct. 19, 1926, in Winter Garden, Florida, to Lewis and Ina Johnston.

She grew up in Winter Garden, attended Winter Garden Elementary and graduated from Lakeview High School.

Jeanette then received her degree from Florida Southern in business administration. While at college, Jeanette noticed Doug Sadler Sr., who she knew from high school, also was attending Florida Southern.

After her graduation, they courted for a year. Then she and Doug were married on April 29, 1951. They lived in Oakland and raised two children, Becky and Doug.

Later, their family became members of First Baptist Church of Winter Garden, where Jeanette faithfully served the Lord as pianist for over 35 years. Her faith and love for the Lord was evident by the lifestyle she lived and her love for sharing her faith in Jesus Christ with others.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Doug Sr.; three brothers, Richard, Carlton and Sidney Johnston.

On Friday, June 14, Ocoee wide receiver Dexter Rentz Jr. announced his commitment to the University of Louisville. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound rising senior wideout received 29 offers from schools like Kentucky, Cincinnati and the University of South Florida before picking the Cardinals. In his junior season at Ocoee, Rentz would haul in 1,200 receiving yards on 60 catches, and scored 14 total touchdowns.

In a 5-3 win in the first game of a doubleheader against the Sanford River Rats (4-7) on Saturday, June 15, Bryce Jackson (Clarion) led the Winter Garden Squeeze (4-5) at the plate by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs.

On the mound, Matt Nicholas (Texas State) recorded the last five outs to pick up his second save of the season.

This past week, West Orange High School announced two new hires in the athletic department, as Brian Rizo will take over the girls basketball program and Jay Welsh will lead the baseball program. Rizo comes to West Orange following a stint as an assistant at Winter Springs High, while Welsh is the former head coach of the Winter Garden Squeeze.

The West Orange Babe Ruth League 8U team had a good go of it during the State Small League tournament from Saturday, June 15, to Sunday, June 16. The team would go 1-2, with a 10-6 win over Ocala Highlands in the second game of the tourney.

tepping off the team bus in Salisbury, Maryland, Kole Enright is immediately met by a young kid and his family waiting outside of Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.

He may not play for the home team, the Delmarva Shorebirds, but that doesn’t mean anything to this young fan — all he wants is just a chance to meet and get an autograph from the Hickory Crawdad’s second baseman.

Handing out autographs and being a role model to the kids has become a big part of his journey in the Minor Leagues, and Enright knows the responsibility he holds as a professional baseball player.

“It’s really neat … obviously we are trying to perfect our craft and work really hard at what we do and take it very seriously, yet at the same time (we) still realize that we are in a position that a lot of people — a lot of kids — look up to,” Enright said. “It’s a lot of responsibility that I — and a lot of us — feel to just play hard each and every night for these kids.”

That reflection and growth comes from a lifetime dedicated to the game of baseball, which goes all the way back to his playing days as a youngster in Winter Garden Little League, but it really started picking up in 2016. That was the year that Enright graduated from West Orange High, and was quickly drafted by the Texas Rangers in the third round of the MLB Draft.

His time at West Orange High was one of both success and

So far this season, Enright holds a .297 batting average through 10 games.

Babe Ruth League to introduce softball Starting in the fall, the league will be fielding several age divisions in the sport.

In the West Orange area, the options for softball are pretty limited compared to baseball.

There’s the West Orange Girls Club in Ocoee, and Windermere Little League — which plays its games in Winter Garden — but

outside of that, there’s no other place for a girl to play. That was, until now.

After a year of planning and behind-the-scenes work, West Orange Babe Ruth League will be offering up softball teams to play alongside its already established baseball league.

After making the transition from

Little League to Babe Ruth last year, the option of implementing softball was put out there, and based on those in the community, there was a great desire for it.

“We had a lot of parents wanting softball right when we switched to Babe Ruth, but we wanted to focus on the baseball side first and get that started and going in the right

direction before we started the softball side,” said Tom Hardy, the League’s president. “Starting two complete entities in one year was going to be not an easy task whatsoever. So now we have the baseball side going well, now it’s time to start the softball side.”

Life in the Minors

Dalton Shuffield has only been in Florida for a few weeks, but has adjusted beautifully to playing with the Winter Garden Squeeze. The San Antonio native has quickly made a name for himself on the team with his fielding abilities and nine hits in just 21 at-bats, as well as three RBI and four stolen bases.

How did you get started playing baseball, and what made you stick with it?

Just as a little kid I played baseball. My dad played in the Royals organization and so he just kind of brought me up playing baseball and all sports, really. I just liked baseball.

I’m just more confident in my abilities with baseball rather than in basketball — being 5-foot-10, you know — and being kind of skinnier with football. Baseball’s a better fit.

How did you end up at Texas State?

Me and Wesley, he plays here too, we played on the same summer ball team for a long time and we’d travel everywhere. Being from San Antonio, Texas State is like an hour from there so I was just kind of a local kid and they scouted both of us. Now we both go there together.

How has the transition from Texas to Florida been?

Well I’m kind of used to the heat, not really the rain, and the humidity here is a lot worse than in Texas. But the living situation is great here, my teammates are great and the coaches are great so it was pretty easy to fit in.

What is adjusting to the FCSL like?

It wasn’t really hard.

Most of the guys were super nice off the bat and everything just kind of fit really well from the very beginning.

It was pretty easy to get right into it.

Getting through the summer I’m just trying to have better at-bats at the plate. I feel like my fielding is just fine right now, but I’m trying to get faster, stronger, a little bigger and just more plate discipline.

What’s been your favorite thing about this experience thus far?

With the team everyone’s really nice, everyone gets along really well. We’ve got a lot of team chemistry. And about Florida, there’s a lot of fishing spots. It’s pretty fun just to go with Matt and Wesley — they’re huge fishermen.

Do you have any hobbies outside of baseball?

A lot of pool playing goes on, a lot of pool and a lot of fishing.

There’s a lot of working out every day and then just relaxing after that.

What’s your go-to meal after a game?

If it’s not Sunday, Chickfil-A. I get the regular Chickfil-A sandwich meal with a sweet tea and get the 12-count nuggets with that, as well.

You’ve gotta get both.

struggles. He had the low of having a scholarship pulled, but then had highs of developing lifelong friendships and learning the foundations of baseball that he still utilizes to this day.

“I played for great coaches that were really awesome — we had quite a lot go through there,” Enright said. “We won a lot of games there — I played with some really good teammates who should be mentioned, like Tyler Baum, who just got drafted. We had a talented team, but we had even better leadership.”

Unlike Baum, Enright jumped straight into the league from West Orange High, and the difference was incredibly noticeable.

He went from playing alongside high-school kids to playing against grown men in their 20s and 30s, who were more athletic and more experienced in the game.

And just like in high school, from the get-go with the Arizona League Rangers — the Rangers’ rookie team — Enright had his good days and bad days.

Every day was a struggle to realize a dream, he said.

“For me it’s been a blessing — I’ve grown so much as an individual throughout my journey of playing the game, and I wouldn’t even say the game is all because of it, but a lot of it is because of what I’m going through,” Enright said.

Despite the obstacles of playing on a new level of baseball, Enright still found success

through his short rookie season — batting .313 and grabbing 17 RBI through just 42 games.

Over the next few seasons Enright bounced around between the Arizona league; the Northwest League in Spokane, Washington; and the South Atlantic League, where he now plays for the Rangers’ Single-A team in Hickory, North Carolina.

While he loves playing the game as a professional, the negatives of playing Minor League ball are always there: the costs of living and the not-so-great pay.

Those challenges are well known to those who follow baseball closely, but none of it deters Enright from pressing on and doing what he loves. It helps when you enjoy your team the way he does.

“It’s been cool to play in Hickory — it’s an awesome ballpark — and we really got everything we need being in pro ball,” Enright said. “The technology that the Rangers and other organizations bring in now is pretty high-tech and pretty cool, and it gives us the best chance that we have of making the Major Leagues.”

But what exactly is it, specifically, that keeps Enright coming back to the ballpark?

Why put all that time, effort and heart into something that doesn’t pay nearly enough, while also adding on all the other obstacles faced by all Minor League players? For Enright it’s about stepping back and looking at the larger picture, which goes beyond baseball itself.

“It’s definitely not about the money,” Enright said with a laugh. “But at the end of the day my story is kind of one that has been, I guess, massively put together. As a man of faith, I love Jesus a lot, so to see Him work in my life and just kind of progress in ways that has taken me one step back, two steps forward...

In those times when I need that extra push the most, I remember my purpose, and I feel like I’m walking it right now.”

to that of baseball — including 6U (tee ball), 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U — with the addition of an 18U team for the girls side specifically.

So far things have been going incredibly well, as only a week into the registration period the League has seen positive growth in not only softball, but baseball as well, Hardy said.

That simultaneous growth in baseball makes sense when you think about it, as it opens up more options for families.

“Parents want their kids to play at one, central group,” Hardy said.

“We see it all the time where parents drop their kid off for baseball and then running a kid over to softball, and then it becomes, ‘Well, which kid do we go see tonight?’

“I have two little kids, and it creates that, ‘Well you love so and so, because you went to their game and not mine,’” he said. “So we are going to do everything in our power to schedule softball and baseball on different nights, so the parents don’t have to sit there and choose which child to watch.”

Another aspect of focus on making the league even more family friendly comes with the cost of signing a kid up to participate.

While many leagues see registration costs of $120 and up, Hardy said that through July 31, signing up one kid will only cost $90 for 8U and up, while the tee ball sign up is $54. Then on top of that, for additional siblings it’s 50% off for them.

By allowing parents to save money, it allows them to help their kids in other ways relating to baseball or softball.

“The nice part about it … is they can use the additional money to get the kid cleats or a glove or something they wouldn’t have been able to get for the next season,” Hardy said. “My son goes through a new pair of cleats every season as his foot grows — from that standpoint the parents are very excited that we are able to offer the discount for them.”

While the excitement of parents makes for a huge boost for the fledgling program, there’s also a boost for the league that comes in the form of an expanded boundary.

The league was confined to a smaller space when it was a part of the Little League system, but in Babe Ruth its reach goes from as far south as Dr. Phillips and all the way north to Apopka, while going west to east from Oakland to Ocoee.

That simple expansion in reach has led to the building of a more West Orange-centric community.

“We’ve seen this on the baseball side — and I’m almost guaranteeing we will see it on the softball side — but we see parents where their friends live in Winter Garden and they may have a friend who lives in Ocoee, and they may have another friend who lives in the Apopka version of our boundaries,” Hardy said. “And all three kids come and play, because that group of friends can all play together. It’s creating that West Orange feel, which is what we wanted — where friends are able to play together that wouldn’t have been able to under traditional rules.”
