The Centre for Dance & the Performing Arts will have Southeastern Regionals representatives to the United States Inter-regional Championships this summer.

The dancers, under the direction of Dr. Kathryn Austin, study, perform and compete in traditional Scottish Highland dancing throughout the United States and in Canada.

Top dancers compete in a regional heat in each of six U.S. regions during April and May. CDPA dancers Elizabeth Karpov, Maggie Scott, Anna Binkley, Courtney McHale amd Kendall DeFranco competed at the Southeastern Regionals in Savannah, Georgia, in early May. Now, they will represent their region at the USIR in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this July in the top 100 dancers in the nation.

All CDPA dancers received placings in the regional event, as well as the PrePremier dancers who placed well in their events that afternoon. Anna Phelan, of Montverde, was awarded the Most Promising Beginner award for the day.

Calling the Class of 1996 The West Orange High Class of 1996 will host its 20-year reunion on Saturday, Aug. 27, at B.B. King’s Blues Club, 9101 International Drive, Suite 2230, Orlando.

Forty-nine people — all of them out for a night of fun with friends — died when the gunman opened fire June 12 at the Pulse nightclub in downtown Orlando. One of them, Cory Connell, was an Ocoee resident.

ory Connell loved life and enjoyed spending time with the people he loved.

That’s exactly what he was doing Saturday night when he took in an Orlando Predators game with his mother and father, Tara and James Connell, and his girlfriend, Paula Blanco.

After the game was over, he headed to the Pulse nightclub with Blanco, who is from Colombia and wanted to teach Cory how to Latin dance. They joined friends from Blanco’s football team. A cousin was going to take Cory’s sister, Amanda, to join them, but he ended up not being able to go, so Amanda decided to forgo the outing and spend time with Cory the next day.

They told each other that they loved each other, and Cory left.

That was the last time she saw him alive.

And as the nation still reels from the attack, the Connells are scrambling for answers about what happened to Cory.

“We don’t know what’s true,”

Amanda said. “We have like 17 different stories on what happened that night.”

In the 24 hours following the shooting, they didn’t know where Cory was or if he had made it to the hospital. The spent the day at the hospital, hearing conflicting stories. It was after 2 a.m. Monday when they returned home to get a few hours of sleep before continuing their search. But before they could leave the house the next morning, a pair of detectives came to the door.

On Tuesday, family and friends huddled quietly in the living room of their Ocoee home, hoping the autopsy will provide more answers.

Born on Aug. 18, 1994, at Orlando Regional Medical Center — the very hospital his family waited for answers 21 years later — Cory grew up in the Orlando area with a zeal for life.

He is survived by his parents, Tara and James; as well as his three siblings, Ashley, Amanda and Ryan.

He spent much time in the College Park area, and he graduated from Edgewater High School in 2013, where he played football.

Ryan (Cory’s brother) recalls eating lunch at Chick-fil-A with Cory and seeing a homeless man on the side of the road. Cory went back inside the restaurant and bought a whole meal for the man.

in the community, and he often visited College Park Baptist for a game of pick-up basketball.

Three years ago, he moved with this parents to Ocoee.

He was studying at Valencia College, with goals of becoming an EMT and a sports broadcaster.

Although he was a college student and was strapped for funds, he always found a way to help others with what he did have.

Ryan recalls eating lunch at Chick-fil-A with Cory and seeing a homeless man on the side of the road. Cory went back inside the restaurant and bought a whole meal for the man.

“If he had $1 in his pocket, and that’s all he had, he’d give it to you,” Amanda said.

His siblings noted his love for playing football and basketball and said he was a miniaturegolf champion. He met Blanco through playing on a flag football team with her and the rest of their siblings.

Overall, he had a personality that drew people to him, his siblings said.

“Cory was that guy that you’d want to bring home to your family,” Ryan said.

The College Park community has rallied around the family, starting a GoFundMe account that has well exceeded the goal of $10,000. To help, go to gofundme. com/295tskk.

“We thank the people of College Park for all their support — Publix, everybody that’s just poured out so many donations and time and well-wishes,” Ryan said.

Soft music played as words from Isaiah 41:10 shined across the screen: Do not fear for I am with you.

Members from Kensington Church and Harvest Bible Chapel gathered June 13 to pray for the community after the attack at Pulse Orlando this weekend.

“Everyone wants to respond,” said Johnny Scott, executive pastor at Harvest Bible Chapel. “But how do you respond to something like this?”

The churches have decided the first response needs to be prayer, but it doesn’t end there. Scott said the church was viewing the night as a launching point to send the members out to help and spread God’s love wherever they can into the situation.

“The first response is to love,” said Kevin Valentine, pastor at Kensington Church.

“We pray to God and ask how do we love best.”

The service mixed worship through music with prayer for the community, for the members of the church and for ways they could make an impact.

CANDLELIGHT VIGILS

Multiple candlelight vigils have been planned for this week. FROM KNIGHT TO WARRIOR Hanging on the wall in his Ocoee High School office is a framed photo from many decades ago, a bunch of young FFA boys posing in front of the old Ocoee High building.

Bill Floyd, the principal of the new Ocoee High for the last six years, can identify just two of the students: William Floyd, his father, and Scott Vandergrift, former longtime mayor of Ocoee.

Bill Floyd’s roots are deep in West Orange, so he was ecstatic to learn that his new assignment would take him just six short miles to West Orange High School.

“I’m excited about it,” he said. “I’m happy to stay with ‘family’ in the West Orange area. It’s where I grew up and I went to school. So, I’m glad to stay in the area.”

Under Floyd, Ocoee — which had received a grade of D from the Florida Department of Education — earned its first two Bs. The graduation rate also improved from 85% to 89.7%.

And he was able to increase participation in Advanced Placement classes, up to about 49% of the school population.

“We were named one of Newsweek’s top schools in the country based on AP participation and performance,” Floyd said. “Plus, we were the first digital pilot school, and because of that we had international delegation come visit the school.”

This year, Floyd was named Florida’s Innovative Principal of the Year, an honor that recognizes principals who integrate technology into the curriculum.

Six years of memories will be removed from the bookshelves and walls of his Ocoee office: yearbooks, photographs, Knight mementos and more.

One of his favorite items is a tall jar full of plastic swords, globe key chains, Jolly Rancher candies, dimes and Advil packets — gifts from each of the graduating classes.

Wendy Cartwright, the Student Government Association adviser, created the keepsake for Floyd.

Prior to his six years at OHS, he served as principal at Apopka High for six years and Gotha Middle for four. In the 1990s, Floyd was the assistant principal of instruction at Lakeview Middle School.

“Being around kids invigorates me,” Floyd said. “I get teased by the superintendent because I tend to talk like them. I would much rather live in the world of kids than adults.”

tion as assistant principal at Lanphier High School in his hometown of Springfield, Illinois.

“The last three years have been the most amazing of my 17-year educational career,” Szcinski said in a post on the school’s Facebook page. “Thank you to the students, teachers, staff, parents and community for allowing me to lead the greatest school in the state and for accepting me and my family into the West Orange County community. I am forever grateful for my time in Warrior Nation.”

When interviewed upon arrival at WOHS in 2013, he said he was excited to be part of the school’s reputation for being a close-knit family. His interest in technology and social media led him to incorporate Twitter and Facebook and to create a weekly digital newsletter — all of which helped connect the school, families and community even more.

“To me, it comes down to the 40-year history because there’s so many people who come back here and have that connection,” Szcinski said. “It’s not something that you can make up or something you can explain to somebody, unless you’ve lived it. ... It’s a sense of family, a sense of community; it’s a sense of pride.

“That’s part of the reason I wanted to come here —because I had been at newer schools, and I liked this tradition,” he said. It’s really surreal, the last few days, teachers and parents have said, ‘You’ve built the culture of community even more than it has been.’”

Graduation ceremonies top the list of his favorite moments of the last three years.

“We work so hard to get all kids there and to see them and their families,” he said.

When Szcinski took the position at West Orange, the graduation rate was 82%. Now, it’s at more than 96%.

“Blood, sweat and tears,” he said. “It’s a lot of individual con-

There’s so many people involved, guidance counselors, (assistant principals), myself, teachers — not only that we get these kids to pass the classes needed to graduate but also the credits. It’s a lot of follow-up and follow-through.”

He still has a memento of his first West Orange graduation in 2014: a cowboy hat with the initials of many of the seniors. At last month’s graduation, seniors donated money to update and renovate the Fallen Warrior monument that stands at the north end of the high-school building.

Szcinski is proud of all the school’s championships.

“It’s more about watching the kids excel in whatever they’re interested in,” he said. “The three years I’ve been here, we’ve won national championships, received superiors in art and drama; every kid has their niche, and you can see it.”

This school year, the principal implemented an all-digitallearning environment, and while

that is a big accomplishment, Szcinski would say his biggest is building the teacher-community connection.

“What I know is that this place is a lot bigger than me, and to be an outsider coming in, you look back three years ago and then now, that’s a lot bigger,” he said.

“We’ve accomplished so much in three years. (Former Principal) James (Larsen) even said, ‘I’m glad you did this.’”

It’s bittersweet to be leaving West Orange, Szcinski said. But he knows he’s leaving the school in capable hands in Bill Floyd.

“Bill and I have been friends for a lot of years,” Szcinski said.

Consultant unveils first draft of Ocoee’s new downtown The draft includes myriad amenities, including new restaurants, gateway entrances and a connection to the West Orange Trail.

and preparation, Ocoee city officials finally unveiled the first draft of the concept plan for Ocoee’s Downtown Redevelopment Project at a June 13 workshop.

Pete Sechler, senior director of GAI Consultants — the firm hired to devise the plan — asked Ocoee residents to express their level of satisfaction, or lack thereof, of the concept plan by a show of hands.

Using a scale ranging from one to five, with one indicating complete disapproval, the majority of the 139 people in the room raised their hands at four.

The concept plan certainly is ambitious. It includes upgrading the water-management system from septic to sewer; revamped gateway entrances to Ocoee; an expanded and more pedestrianfriendly road framework; the relocation of City Hall; and the addition of several lakefront features and park.

The plans for the road framework include two roundabouts, a truck route, the expansion of McKey Street, the rebuilding of Bluford Avenue, the expansion of

Silver Star Road to the west and a bike trail that connects to the West Orange Trail from the north.

The plan also includes projects to renovate the lakefront by adding dining opportunities and a pier and dock for kayaks and canoes so that Ocoee can be both an arrival and departure point.

The concept plan incorporates a storm water creek that will solve storm water problems for almost all of the downtown blocks and double as an environmental feature for a park, as well as a B&B and restaurant where City Hall currently is located.

Mitzi Turchiano, an 11-year Ocoee resident, lamented the initial decision to build City Hall so near to the creek considering the city already owned the property on which it would be relocated.

Andrew McCown, a GAI consultant, estimated the relocation could cost about $6 million.

“I like all the parks and what they’re doing with the creek,” Turchiano said. “I’m a little upset about City Hall, though. I don’t understand who built City Hall and put this on a piece of property that is so unstable.”

The timeframe for the downtown project ultimately will depend on funding and which projects city commissioners approve.

“If you have a lot of projects you

want to do and you can only get a little bit of money, it takes longer,” McCown said. “So generally, we try to do plans for 20-year timeframes, but there’s going to be phases.”

Local residents will vote on the first-phase projects. GAI Consultants then will relay that input to the city to decide which priorities make it into the final timeline for the plan.

A detailed study of how much all the projects will cost has not yet been done, but McCown said most of the funding will likely be borrowed via bonds, and the rest might be sought from multiple sources, such as the state government, the federal government in the form of grants for specific projects, money generated from

utility bills and city coffers.

Jason Gage, an entrepreneur who has owned property in Ocoee for the past 18 years, thinks the connection to the West Orange Trail is the best idea and believes the downtown Ocoee plan has potential.

“Winter Garden looks very nice, and I think that we have a lot more potential because of the lake and the water features and everything,” Gage said. “Winter Garden does not have that, but I feel like it’s going to be a little tougher because they already had the structure and the buildings, so they had a little more to start with.”

familiar with Maguire Road and West Colonial Drive, you might have noticed something amiss recently, like, say, the 42-year-old Sabal Hotel that is now a big pile of rubble.

The Sabal Hotel did not go out of business, but it was turned over to a demolition contractor on May 2 by the property owner, Mocny LP, which decided to invest in ground leases instead.

The property site is about 3.3 acres, and Jeff Krisan, the authorized agent for Mocny LP, said it has been divided into three parcels of about one acre apiece.

So far, only one of those parcels has a signed lease, and that lease is with Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, which is known for its New Orleans-style cuisine, particularly its spicy fried chicken.

Mocny LP is working with a broker to market the property and secure two more ground leases.

“Their plans are just to do

ground leases and receive rents on the ground and not be in the business of maintaining properties,” Ocoee City Planner Michael Rumer said. “So with that kind of philosophy, they went forward and they found a potential user for the Sabal site and signed a ground lease with Popeyes, and that kicked off the demolition, the moving of the Perkins and the demolition of the hotel. They currently have a plan with the city of Ocoee to create three parcels on that land for future development.”

Rumer added that Mocny LP also owned the Fairfield Inn & Suites behind the Sabal Hotel and the Red Roof Inn, but sold both and retained the 3.3-acre Sabal property.

Krisan said the company is hoping to attract the best-use tenants on the property and would like to fill the spaces with restaurants. However, timing and extent of interest ultimately will determine the tenants.

“It’s really not our place to choose what works in Ocoee,” Krisan said. “It’s the tenant that’s willing to invest their money and their time in the property. You market it to all different types of users, and they determine whether the site is right for them. So (Popeyes) got interested.”

Krisan said Mocny LP believes new commercial retail coming in to “one of the most valuable corners in West Orange County” will help the area develop.

Krisan estimates the parcel will be turned over to Popeyes for construction sometime in August or September to begin construction. The time completion is not yet known.

“We feel good about it, and they’re excited to come in,” Krisan said. “So it’s not so much us choosing them, it’s the user figuring out what’s right for their product.”

Commissioners unanimously approved the final subdivision plan for the Ocoee Lakes property on the northeast corner of Silver Star Road and Lake Johio Drive.

Ocoee Principal Planner Antonio Fabre said the development will include 50 singlefamily residences, two cul-desacs and four commercial lots.

Most of the discussion during the public hearing related to Ocoee’s plan to vacate a rightof-way on the north side of the property. Developer Chip Bryan worked with city staff on the plan, which will eliminate a short road and add 30 feet to the lots on the north side and 30 feet to the lots in Ocoee Landings. Fabre said the utility companies will relocate power lines and other services as necessary to accommodate the plans.

Two of the property owners on the north side said they were happy to add additional land to their current lots but expressed concern about the trees on the Ocoee Landings property.

“We don’t want to lose the mature trees,” Jan Manson said.

She asked where the power lines will be relocated and if a brick wall could be built between her property and the new subdivision instead of the planned vinyl fence.

Bryan said it can be difficult to preserve trees when city codes require new power and sewer lines be dug and other safety concerns met. Bryan said the development will preserve as many mature trees as possible and plant new trees where it’s not possible.

n Commissioners postponed a vote to approve the second amendment to the development agreement for Arbours at Crown Point and a vote on Federal Lobbyist service to the next meeting on June 21. Commissioner Joel Keller said he was willing to postpone the vote on lobbyist services to June 21 but would not want to postpone it beyond that date. n Police officer Bill Richardson received the Officer of the Quarter award from Victoria Laney, of the Citizens Advisory Council for the Ocoee Police Department. Winter Garden residents are one step closer to getting their custard. Winter Garden commissioner approved June 9 the site plan of the proposed Culver’s at 13575 Colonial Drive.

Culver’s, a chain known for its custard and its ButterBurger, will operate at the corner of South Dillard Street and West Colonial Drive, along with a Wawa.

The site plan includes the installation of asphalt drive lines, a driveway leading to Colonial Drive, a landscaped median, utilities, parking and landscaping improvements for the whole property.

The commission had approved in January the rezoning of the 6.09-acre parcel, along with the site plan for the Wawa. Plans also include a retail and coffee shop.

Originally, the site plan included a Wendy’s, but that was pulled from the site plan after commissioners said they did not want a fast-food restaurant at that location.

COMMISSIONER SUBMITS RESIGNATION

Commissioner Bobby Olszewski announced he resigned his seat as the District 3 Winter Garden commissioner. His resignation will be effective Dec. 6, 2016.

Olszewski currently is campaigning for the District 1 seat on the Orange County Board of County Commissioners.

“Good Lord willing on Dec. 6, 2016, I’ll be sworn in as Orange County commission for District 1,” he said.

Olszewski said he and the city clerk looked into some statistics, finding that since he began serving as a commissioner in 2012, 99% of the commission’s votes have been unanimous.

“That’s a testament to the work and the congeniality that we have here with Mayor (John) Rees and the rest of the commissioners,” he said.

Zac Holbrook, an intern with the Squeeze, came up with an idea for the June 25 event to remember Supra and keep his name going.

“We thought, let’s help out in any way we can, get people to the game and just get more people to hear about his story that haven’t heard about it,” Holbrook said.

A portion of ticket sales will go to the Ian Supra Memorial Foundation, aka SupraStrong, which raises money to support youth with cancer. A tailgate party will start at 5 p.m., with a cornhole tournament to raise money. Some of Supra’s favorite music will play from the loudspeakers, and the tailgate will include burgers, one of Supra’s favorite foods.

Supra’s mother, Jackie Supra, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch.

Ultimately, the Squeeze would like to make SupraStrong Saturday a regular event.

“Our whole goal with this is using this to do other SupraStrong Saturdays, be it cleaning up a church or helping community serve — having this morph into more than just two Saturdays in the summer,” said Adam Bates, Winter Garden Squeeze general manager.

Schenardi was exposed to the culinary world at a young age, when he spent most days in his mother’s bakery, Panetteria Iolanda, in his hometown of Rivoli, Italy.

“For me what was interesting was seeing the baker making the bread, the chemistry,” he said. “It clicked in my mind. ‘Wow, look at that.’ From a little bit of flour and a little bit of water, look what came out. That’s what fascinates me — to understand the concept.”

He attended culinary institute in Italy for three years before he began working at resorts and hotels in Italy and Switzerland.

While working at a hotel, he met his future wife. When she decided to move back to New York, where she grew up, he went with her.

The couple has been married for almost 24 years.

Schenardi’s career has taken him around the globe, including Tampa, Jamaica, Washington, D.C., St. Louis, Los Angeles and Hawaii. Then, when the Four Seasons Resort Orlando at the Walt Disney World Resort opened two years ago, Schenardi was hired as executive chef and charged with overseeing five restaurants and a lobby bar.

His days are full, often with running the operation. He arrives at work at between 8 and 9 a.m. daily. Some days, he doesn’t leave until 10 p.m. Often, his workload

doesn’t leave time for cooking.

But occasionally he likes to get away to braise meat, make pasta, bread and liquor.

Despite the constant moving and long hours, Schenardi enjoys the field.

“It’s lots of work, honestly,” he said. “You get to know lots of people. You never stop learning.

You learn always …You see people grow.”

THE BEST INGREDIENTS

Everything in Schenardi’s restaurants is homemade, down to the pasta and the pizza sauce. His mentality is not about following trends but using the best ingredients to make the best food.

“For me, cooking is make as much as you can in house,” he said. “Keep it fresh, simple. Use the right ingredient for the right dish.”

He likes to use local foods but thinks it is much better to purchase the food from where it will be the best product, because if he were to settle for the local product, the dish would not taste like its supposed to be.

Schenardi still considers himself learning, even though he has been in the industry for 30 years in October. He believes in asking other chefs for help when he needs it, especially when cooking an unfamiliar cuisine.

SCHENARDI’S TIPS n Take your time to learn. Learn to do your job well and don’t rush to climb the ladder. When you are ready, you will be promoted. n Pay attention to your surroundings and ask your coworkers what they are doing. Don’t limit yourself to be absorbed in making the dressing. Do the job well but observe what others are doing and ask questions. n Be prepared to sacrifice. To be successful, chefs need to be willing to sacrifice much and see change in themselves. n Don’t expect to be fed with a golden spoon. You will need to work hard to be successful and be willing to take a route that’s not the easiest way.

This two-story home once stood on Tildenville School Road, directly across from the South Lake Apopka Citrus Growers Association packinghouse complex. Built in 1915, it originally stood near the water tank still standing on the

SLACGA property, and it was moved on rollers before World War II to its final location. Arthur Warren Hurley, one of the original founders of the association when it was established in 1909, boarded several of his employees in the house. One of

these was Eddie Goodwin, who lived there from 1946 until his death in 1995.

The house and its grounds once served as a backdrop for a Hallmark television film. This photo depicts the home shortly before it was torn down in 1999.

The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation, which seeks to preserve our heritage and architecture while creating new cultural experiences, is celebrating its third decade with the debut of its new History Research and Education Center.

Introduction to black-and-white photography S

hapes, contrast, depth of field and tonality (shades of gray) — thats what you’re left with when you take away the color from an image.

Black-and-white covers a diverse range of disciplines and techniques and can be a bit overwhelming when you first research it. Everything from fine

art and long-exposure architecture to gritty street photography. Even learning to visualize a scene in black and white takes time — but the best way to learn

anything in photography is to do it.

So let’s take our first steps with a couple of simple examples.

SHAPES AND LINES Strong graphic elements in an image work particularly well in black and white — you are looking for bold shapes, leading lines, anything that can be clearly shown without blending into confusing backgrounds.

The crosses on this church roof and the spiral curl of the lighthouse staircase are simple shapes and easy to isolate.

Framing your subject incamera is key. Move around until you find a position that excludes the rest of the world from the shot.

Remove as many distractions as you can in this way and think shape rather than context — the spiral of the staircase works well regardless of where it was taken — the context of the lighthouse is not important, only the resulting photo.

CONVERTING THE IMAGE Having taken a couple of practice shots — and assuming you are shooting on a modern digital camera in color — it’s time to convert to black and white and see the results.

There’s so much more to conversion than desaturating the image to remove color. Although Lightroom and Photoshop have some good tools, you really do need to work on how the colors are rendered into gray tones. In traditional film photography, we use colored filters to emphasize and control how certain colors are recorded tonally on the film. A gentle orange filter helps lift and soften skin tones in portrait photography, for example. Red filters darken skies and increase cloud contrast. I used a red filter for the image of the crosses — the bright blue sky is darkened, increasing contrast with the white, sunlit crosses.

Lightroom’s B&W Mix tool is very good — as is Photoshop’s adjustment layer — but for years, I’ve found better results with plug-ins.

The good ones add that “certain something” that a simple mix does not. Whichever plugin or tool you use, experiment by adjusting the color filters or sliders and see the impact it has — especially true with red, orange and blues.

My favorite plugin is Nik Silver Efex 2. Although no longer actively updated, it is still one of the best plugins for black-and-white conversion. Find it as part of the Google Nik collection — available for free at the time of this writing.

PORTRAITS Start by simplifying the image by reducing the complexity of the background — fill the frame with your subject and throw the rest of the world out of focus with a shallow depth of field (lower f number). Now you’re halfway there — you still need ‘tonal contrast’ so the brightness of your subject isn’t lost in the middle of other areas of the same brightness.

Without color information, it’s the contrast that separates your subject from everything else — and for a portrait, you’ll typically want the face to be lighter than the background.

My daughter and her friend were on their way to prom when I photographed them on Plant Street in Winter Garden.

Standing in open shade gives a beautiful, even light across their faces while the shallow depth of field throws the background completely out of focus. The contrast between their faces and (darker) hair helps frame and separate them from the brighter areas behind them and shooting

I photographed Carl indoors using a single flash. There’s plenty of tonal contrast here — his face stands out clearly against the darker backdrop because the flash is closer to him, while just enough light reaches the backdrop so it doesn’t appear completely black. Carl’s red shirt is rendered neutral and less distracting in black and white.

Hill isn’t the only one who thinks so.

“One thing about Elliot Schwartz is his compassion for his students,” said Keith Galasso, the visual and performance arts magnet coordinator at Dr. Phillips High School. “Students are No. 1 with him, and his concern for them leaves the classroom. If they have any problem in life, he’s there for them … that’s one thing about Elliot, he has a big heart.”

Galasso said Schwartz has spent time helping students deal with financial issues and even homelessness. Galasso said another noteworthy aspect about Schwartz is his dedication to his craft, which Schwartz has spent his whole life persuing.

Schwartz, 67, was born in Brooklyn, New York. Always a creative soul, the film director and producer knew from an early age he wanted to be involved

in the film industry. As a child, Schwartz spent his Saturdays at the local theater watching 25-cent cartoons.

Schwartz graduated with a bachelor’s degree in communication arts from the New York Institute of Technology. He got his first job in the industry as a graphic arts photographer in 1971 but quickly grew bored with a 9-to-5 and set off to travel.

After he attended Woodstock, Schwartz camped his way across the United States and finally settled down in West Orange.

Schwartz is married to Bonnie Schwartz and has a 20-year-old daughter, Samara.

Schwartz said the skills students learn in his film program go far beyond filmmaking. He tries to teach students communication and cooperation; things they can use no matter what industry they go into.

“I try to make (the program) as true to life as possible,” Schwartz said. “I really try to run it that way. I teach the kids that you need to work with people that you may not like because that’s the real world. And sometimes the people you don’t like may be more talented than the people you do.”

esidents, friends and community members gathered Saturday, June 11, at the Oakland Town Center to enjoy an evening filled with music and live art at the 10th annual Town of Oakland Arts & Music Festival.

Presented by the HAPCO Foundation, which supports art and music education in the community, the free festival served as a way to give back to the community and show appreciation for the fine arts.

solving global hunger through sustainable farming. Acting as an ECHO board member from 2013 to present became a richly rewarding experience for her.

She was an accomplished amateur photographer, a prolific reader and a great and generous cook.

She enjoyed swimming, fishing, kayaking and volleyball. Wendy completed over 20 triathlons — all since her initial cancer diagnosis in 2008. She was inherently curious and instinctively kind.

Wendy loved her family, and she lived her faith. She was the beloved daughter of Kathy Matheison, who predeceased her in 2004.

She is survived by her husband of 27 years, Michael Andrew; her father, Robert K. Matheison, and his wife, Arra Mae; her aunt, Linda Palmer Garberson; her siblings, Cindy, Molly and Robert; and her nine adoring nephews and one niece.

Wendy encouraged us all to never fear our challenges, to live life to the fullest and to love God by loving each other.

A celebration of her life is planned for Saturday, July 9, at The Pines, Windermere, Florida.

Wendy May Andrew, beloved daughter, sister and wife, passed away on June 8, 2016, from breast cancer. She was 54.

Born in Anaheim, California, she moved as a child to Central Florida, where she grew to love its natural beauty and habitat.

A 1980 graduate of West Orange High School, Wendy went on to the University of Florida, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in forest resources and conservation and a master’s degree in agronomy.

She began her professional life in 1985, as a staff assistant on the Environment to Sen. Lawton Chiles. In 1986, she became one of the first women employed as an aquatic plant manager for the Southwest Florida Water Management District.

She launched a 24-year career with Walt Disney World in 1992.

As horticulture manager for Disney’s Animal Kingdom since 2000, Wendy lived her professional dreams. Along the way she met the love of her life, Michael Andrew, while engaged as a diver at EPCOT’s Living Seas Pavilion.

She took her passion for the natural world beyond her pro-

fessional duties by consulting on environmental projects within Florida and around the world, including Uganda, South Africa, Tanzania, Mexico, Cambodia and Thailand. She served on the Florida Department of Agriculture Endangered Species Task Force, as a director and treasurer of the Association of Zoological Horticulture, and president of the Florida Aquatic Plant Management Society.

Florida Audubon recognized Wendy as Volunteer of the Year in 2012.

Wendy cared as deeply about people as she did about the environment. She loved the Southwest Community Church. In 2006, she melded her faith, her concern for the environment and her compassion for people in her service work with ECHO, a faithbased organization dedicated to

SPORTS Local alumni make impact From off the radar to the in college programs

With the softball season finished and baseball nearing its climax, here is a look at how a few standout alumni fared this year.

Across the country this spring, baseball and softball players who got their start playing on fields around West and Southwest Orange County made an impact on teams at the collegiate-level.

And, with the College World Series set to begin on Saturday, and the Women’s College World Series concluding last week, now is an appropriate time to recognize the stellar play of a select few local alumni from the 2016 campaign.

CHASE HANEY Freshman pitcher, FSU (Windermere Prep)

Haney, a Windermere Prep alumnus from Winter Garden, has had a stellar year for the Florida State Seminoles. In 30 appearances as a reliever this spring, Haney has a 2.81 ERA and has earned five wins. In 32 innings of work, the former Laker has struck out 37 batters.

GUNNAR MCNEILL Junior first baseman, Kentucky (West Orange)

McNeill set a modern-era school record at Kentucky earlier this season when he compiled a 23-game hitting streak for the Wildcats.

McNeill, who was batting over .400 for a stretch in March, cooled off, finishing the season with a .249 batting average and 38 RBIs — but not before earning a spot in the Wildcats’ record books.

MARY WARREN Junior IF/OF/C, AlabamaBirmingham (Ocoee)

Warren had a breakout spring for the Blazers, hitting .309 and knocking 11 home runs to go along with her 36 RBIs on the season. For her efforts, Warren was named to the Conference USA First Team and the NFCA Mideast All-Region Team.

little more than a year ago, during the 2015 varsity season, Kole Enright wasn’t even a regular

starter for the West Orange High baseball team.

On June 10, Enright was selected in the third round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft — with the 99th selection overall — by the Texas Rangers.

“I’ve had a crazy past year,” Enright said Monday morning after arriving in Arlington, Texas, to sign a contract with the Rangers worth $675,000.

Windermere Prep’s Rylan Thomas and Austin Bergner both were drafted last week in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.

Squeeze sweep Lightning The Winter Garden Squeeze swept the Leesburg Lightning (3-7) in a trio of games over the weekend, bringing the team to a 5-3 record as of press time.

The Squeeze defeated the Lightning 9-3 in Winter Garden June 10, anchored by a grand slam off the bat of Nick Niarchos. The next day, pitching helped propel the Squeeze to a doubleheader sweep, with victories of 7-3 and 4-1.

Anthony Mazzurco and Chase Pilato earned wins for Winter Garden, respectively, in the doubleheader.

Orlando Perez Orlando Perez, 14, helped lead the Ocoee Junior Braves to an undefeated record in the regular season (18-0) and a 3-1 record in the District 14 Top Team Tournament, where the Braves finished as co-champions with the Windermere White Sox. Perez hit .418 while also earning a 1.84 ERA on the mound.

How old were you when you first started to play baseball?

I started playing baseball when I was 6. My family played the game. It just runs through my blood, and it’s fun to play.

What’s been the secret to the team’s success this year?

We just play like a team. We keep our heads up, and that’s it.

What part of baseball do you enjoy the most?

I like batting. It gets the team pumped when you get a base hit. It gets the team rallied up.

What has been your favorite memory from this season?

Last game (June 8, against Winter Garden), we were down by six with two outs in the last inning, and we came back, and we won in the 10th inning.

My favorite pro team is the Los Angeles Angels, and my favorite player is Mike Trout.

They’re (the Angels) up-andcoming — and Mike Trout, no matter what, he is always playing (well).

What is your favorite sport to play outside of baseball?

Basketball — it’s fun to play with friends.

What are your favorite and least favorite subjects in school?

Math is my favorite, because I get to solve problems. History is my least favorite. It’s all about the past, and it’s a lot to take in.

What’s the last movie you saw in theater — and was it any good?

“Angry Birds.” We actually came late … I liked the movie, though — I liked the part where they were saving the eggs.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be and why?

I would want to be able to travel to the future. That way, I know where I would be and which path to take.

If you aren’t able to be a professional athlete, what is something else you would like to be?

A mechanic — I like cars a lot. My favorite car is an Acura Integra.

During that crazy year, the Warriors’ third baseman went from an off-the-radar prospect to being the first high-school player from Central Florida taken in this year’s draft. As Enright tells it, it was a series of events that began with a moment of great disappointment.

Enright had been committed to Coastal Carolina University as a junior, but following some disappointing performances, that coaching staff decided to pull his scholarship offer last summer.

“They (the Coastal Carolina coaches) saw me play in Atlanta, and they took my scholarship,” Enright said. “I’ve got to say that I think that was one of the biggest things — it was a humbling experience and it made me grow up really quick. … I had to get back up and keep fighting.”

From that point on, there was a subtle change in Enright’s approach.

“He’s always been a hard worker, but I think he played with more of a chip on his shoulder after that happened,” West Orange coach Jesse Marlo said.

“I jokingly tell people, including the Coastal Carolina coaches, I said, ‘After you guys pulled his scholarship, he became the best player in Florida.’ And he really did.”

Enright said he worked specifically on putting on muscle and improving his mental approach, acknowledging that he could be “mentally soft” at times. Enright said his father helped him work on his mentality on the field, and the results began to manifest in the fall varsity season, during which he hit five home runs and batted over .600. A move to third base from shortstop also paid dividends.

“Everyone was just wondering, ‘Is this the new Kole?’”

Marlo said. “He never stopped, he just continued to get better.”

Enright, who had committed to Stetson in DeLand after his offer from Coastal Carolina had been rescinded, capitalized on some of the draft buzz of other players during the spring. At a preseason game against Bishop

Here are some of the impressive numbers Enright posted this spring: Batting average: .427 On-base plus slugging: 1.193 Runs scored: 34 RBIs: 21 Extra-base hits: 18 (13 doubles, four home runs, 1 triple)

Moore, one where several scouts had turned out to see teammate and North Carolina-commit Tyler Baum, Enright shined.

Later in the spring, against Lake Minneola Feb. 24, Enright impressed scouts present to see Lake Minneola’s Drew Mendoza and went 3-for-3 with a home run.

The next day, scouts for eight teams flocked to see the Warriors take batting practice — and this time they were there to see Enright.

“That was when things kind of started to get crazy,” Enright said.

In the spring, Enright hit .427 for the Warriors to help lead the program to its first appearance in the FHSAA Final Four. He added 18 extra-base hits (13 doubles, one triple, four home runs) and drove in 21 RBIs while scoring 34 times.

Now, he is preparing to depart for Arizona, where he will begin his professional career playing in the rookie league there — moving on to the next challenge.

“I’m just grateful — it’s really not even hit me yet that I’ve got this opportunity,” Enright said.

“The exciting thing for me is that I’ve still got a lot to prove.”

CASSADY BREWER Freshman infielder, UCF (Apopka, West Orange)

Brewer, who played at the varsity level for West Orange and Apopka and whose father, Bobby, is the head baseball coach at Ocoee, had quite a debut season for the Knights. Brewer was named the American Athletic Conference’s Rookie of the Year and also was honored on the All-Conference First Team and All-Conference Freshman Team.

KENDALL ARCIA AND AMANDA NIKHAZY Freshmen, Daytona State (West Orange)

These two West Orange alumnae are teammates once again at the college level, helping Daytona State to a strong 2016 campaign. Of the team’s 15 home runs this spring, Arcia (5) and Nikhazy (4) accounted for nine of them. The duo also led the team in RBIs, with Arcia knocking in 32 and Nikhazy driving in 28.

STEVANNA AMES Freshman infielder, Seminole State (Foundation Academy)

As a freshman, Ames finished second on the team in RBIs (31) and first on the team in doubles (15) — hitting a pair of triples and home runs, each, along the way. Ames hit .327 on the season.

arvin Washington got the offer of his dreams.

For the rising senior quarterback at Dr. Phillips High, the recruiting interest from Division I schools already had materialized, but there was one school the Panthers standout was hoping would extend an offer before he made a decision on committing.

After a stellar performance in a 7-on-7 camp June 2 at UCF, Washington got the offer he wanted — and two days later he announced his intentions to become a UCF Knight.

“I’ve had about 14 offers … but I was really waiting to get a UCF offer, because that’s the one school I’ve been waiting on,” Washington said. “UCF was the perfect fit for me — the distance, the location, the type of offense. Everything just fell in line.”

More than just an exciting opportunity for one player on Dr. Phillips’ loaded roster for the 2016 season, Washington’s offer and commitment appear to be the latest developments in a trend that has emerged since Scott Frost became the head coach at UCF in early December.

Within his first week on the job, Frost locked up commitments from a trio of local players who were seniors at the time (now graduated) —

including Panthers speedster Jaquarius “Q” Bargnare.

In addition to offering Washington, UCF has offered Dr. Phillips teammates, including Nick Smith (rising senior linebacker), Robert Porcher (rising senior defensive end) and John Campbell (rising junior offensive lineman).

Already on campus is former Panthers standout quarterback Nick Patti.

And although the link between UCF and Dr. Phillips does predate the Frostera (Patti joined the Knights while former coach George O’Leary was still on campus, and the recruitment of Bargnare began with O’Leary’s staff), it seems clear the new staff for the Knights — which has been open about making recruiting in Central Florida a top priority — has identified a potential pipeline of talent in the Panthers.

Washington is thrilled that he and his teammates are being recognized by the hometown Division I program.

“It’s very exciting,” Washington said. “It’s really good to see (UCF) reaching out — all over Central Florida and at our school.”

To be sure, some of the other Dr. Phillips players who have received interest from UCF do not have the Knights as high on their list as Washington does. But, whether or not those players end up at UCF, it is clear that recruiting locally and building a relationship with a program like Dr. Phillips is a priority for the Knights — and that’s exciting for programs beyond the Panthers, too.

For whatever reason, UCF previously had trouble recruiting locally. There were some exceptions, but it always seemed odd that — out of so many good local players — more of these Central Floridabased players were not enticed by the idea of playing big-time college football close to home, where their family and friends were more able to see them

play in person.

The narrative from the old coaching staff often went that players wanted to get away from home, while local highschool coaches often told a different story — one about how good players would hardly get a look from UCF before being snatched up by a Division I program out of state.

Whatever the case, there seems to be a shift in that relationship since the young and energetic Frost-led staff arrived in east Orlando.

Beyond Dr. Phillips, that’s good news for programs such as West Orange, Olympia, Ocoee and even some of the

area’s private schools.

Yes, some athletes are going to have their sights set on the even-brighter lights of playing for a Power Five program in the SEC or Big 10, and some will want to have the experience moving farther away from home, but there seemingly will be a greater opportunity than before to earn a scholarship offer here close to home.

If you’re good, there’s a strong chance the hometown university is going to make a point of trying to keep you in the Greater Orlando area.

Sort of seems like that’s how it should be, anyway — doesn’t it?

Budding pipeline from DPHS to UCF could be boon for area

RECRUITING BUZZ Here is a rundown of some of the recruiting buzz for athletes competing out of West Orange County following the spring season.

At West Orange, receiver Naquan Renalds, running back Darian Williams, receiver Jurrod Cook and quarterback Austin Burton all have received offers coming out of the spring season. Renalds has offers from FAU, Kentucky and Syracuse, with rising interest from other programs.

Williams, who has had to wait his turn behind other talented backs at West Orange, has drawn interest from Coastal Carolina, Eastern Kentucky and Colorado State. Burton added an offer from FIU to a list that already includes UMass and Florida A&M, while Cook most recently picked up an offer from Florida A&M. At Ocoee, the list of offers for Dorian Jones continues to grow and includes interest now from UMass, Coastal Carolina, UT-San Antonio and N.C. State, among others.

Foundation Academy transfer Konrie Brown has also picked up an offer from UT-San Antonio. B.J. Bohler has been offered by The Citadel, West Florida and McNeese State and rising senior Lyston Barber is starting to draw interest from programs, as well.

At Foundation Academy, Lester Axson and Jaquane Patterson have been drawing offers. Axson has been offered by UConn and James Madison while drawing interest from Wake Forest, USF, Maryland and UCF, among others. Patterson has been offered by Indiana State and New Hampshire while gaining interest from Georgia State, USF and Marshall.

Evan Thompson figures to draw interest from some elite academic institutions, and Sydal Barton is on the radar of several Division I programs.

Going off to college this fall isn’t goin g to be easy for me. Not only am I leaving all my friends and family behi nd, but I am also leaving my best friend, my dad. For eighteen years, he has been my advisor, counselor, mentor, and teacher. He is a hardwork ing and dedicated father who makes his family his priority. He is a quiet man , but strong in character and wisdom. I admire and respect my dad and value the amazing relationship that we have.

While I can easily figure out solutions to calculus or chemistry problems, I have never been mechanically inclined, and I have a tough time figuring out how to fix things. My dad has always been incredibly patient when it comes to showing me how to do small projects around the house as well as minor home fixes. It isn’t easy teaching a colorblind kid how to organize tools, nails, and bolts, but some how he manages! Sometimes, after a successful home project lesson, he grills some burgers as homage to a job well done. He still has the same tiny char coal grill with all its weathered and rusted-out areas. He insists that the beat up grill makes the tastiest burgers in Central Florida.

What amazes me most about my dad is that he never gets discouraged, no matter how badly a project goes or how totally something is destroyed.

When I was seven years old, Orlando was slammed by four hurricanes, and our entire screen enclosure came crash ing down. While helping my parents clean up the yard, I fell and injured myse lf badly on a rusted piece of metal.

My dad would not wait for a clean-up crew if the broken enclosure was going to threaten his family’s safety. He set to work cleaning and fixing the entire enclosure himself. Every day, he would spend hours prying nails out of the ground and hauling aluminum beams. It was incredible how tirelessly he worked, and by the end of the mon th, the entire enclosure was fixed!

When I am in college, I will miss seein g my dad every day, and I am still not sure if my fix-it skills are up to par.

It is comforting to know that he is only a phone call away! During my visits home, I look forward to continuing my home project lessons, and hope fully next time it will be a lesson in grilling up some tasty burgers on my dad’s new Big Green Egg. I have no doubt that my dad, Rodney Negrete, is the Best Ace Hardware Project Dad!

34787 During the first quarter of 2016, 325 homes were sold in 34787, exceeding all other ZIP codes in the Central Florida area. In April, the ZIP code also exceeded other local ZIP codes, with 120 homes sold.

The success of the city of Winter Garden is cause for positive numbers, Realtors say.

“Your city commissioners are some of the best in the county, if not the state, if not the country,” said John Lazenby, Orlando Regional Realtor Association president and of Colony Realty Group. “Look at the growth of Winter Garden. Do you have a new hospital? Do you have a developing Fowler Grove neighborhood shopping center that seems to be booming. That attracts from other ZIP codes.”

The attractiveness of the historic downtown corridor of Winter Garden also makes the ZIP code appealing.

“Downtown Winter Garden is a prime reason, because it is different from what we all have in this community,” said Realtor Denise Gregorie, of Watson Realty. “It’s family and family-owned businesses, and I think with bringing the farmer’s markets, the fresh foods, our small businesses, I think everybody loves to support that type of community.”

The proximity of downtown to Winter Garden Village and the chain offerings such as Target, Best Buy and Lowe’s makes the area more appealing, as residents can visit both local businesses

and chain stores.

In addition, the ZIP code has benefitted from the vacant, developable land available there.

It includes upcoming areas such as Hamlin and Summerlake, up-and-coming areas in Horizon West that offer access to lakes and pools, giving off a resort-style feel, Gregorie said. It is often what people relocating to Florida — and even natives of Florida — hope to find in a Florida community.

“When I bring Chicago, New Jersey, New York — all the upperstate (clients) to those places, they light up like, ‘Oh my gosh!’

It’s what they wanted it to be,” Gregorie said.

Inventory, or the number of homes for sale, also has a trend in Winter Garden that is bucking other trends seen in the rest of Orlando.

“While the Orlando area’s overall inventory is in decline and stifling sales, 34787 inventory is actually increasing and contributing to the area’s increase in sales,” said Lisa McDuffie, communications manager at the Orlando Regional Realtor Association.

ZIP code 34786 — which

encompasses Windermere and parts of Horizon West — also has a high inventory at 578 homes.

This is largely due to the West Orange area reaping the rewards of the vacant land that is available, Lazenby said.

Horizon West resident Chris Knowles has created a way to conceal Orange County’s new, larger trash cans in style.

DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER HORIZON WEST Garbage isn’t pretty, and some people have decided that neither are the new, larger garbage cans provided

by Orange County. With this in mind, Horizon West resident Chris Knowles came up with his own solution: If you can’t hide them in your garage, camouflage them in style.

Knowles, a photographer and videographer who works mainly in the local travel industry, watched as Orange County introduced the large, 96-gallon cans to homeowners in January. Walking around local neighborhoods, he saw that with the new cans came sizable storage issues.

“These are much bigger than the cans they used to have, and Orange County has now gone on to collecting one day a week, whereas it used to be two days a week, and that’s why they increased the size of the cans, to compensate for the loss of pickups,” Knowles said.

He saw cans sitting on the sides of houses, in front of the garage and places other than inside the garage. Because the cans are bigger and sit in homeowners’ garages for a longer period of time before collection, he reasons that people may not necessarily want to store them in the garage for the sake of saving space. However, those who want to save space may be sacrificing aesthetics.

Knowles already takes photographs of local aesthetically

pleasing landscapes, so he put his creative side to the test and developed a new solution that camouflages the cans — the CanSkirt.

While the new cans were introduced in January, he was working on CanSkirt by February. In April, the prototypes came to life.

Rather than build a fence or grow shrubs to shield the cans, Knowles said that this is a less expensive, instant solution.

“CanSkirt is a visually appealing, cost-effective alternative for storing garbage cans outside the home,” Knowles said. “Property managers, architectural review boards and HOAs have been searching for a neighbor-friendly solution.”

The CanSkirt is made of 12-ounce waterproof vinyl and has six eyelets that allow bungee cords to pass through and hold the skirt in place. Customers can choose a skirt that wraps around either a single can or two cans and also can choose any of seven patterns or landscape designs: stone wall, brick wall bush, stone wall hedge, white fence, viburnum bush, podocarpus hedge and pink azalea.

Using the bungee cords that come with each skirt, customers can hook the skirt through the eyelets onto the top knobs of the trash can. They also can choose to go for a fixed-storage option, which uses a wood board with hooks that attaches to the side of a house and holds both the cans and skirts in place. Knowles can assist with the installation of the fixed-storage option.

“The interest has been phenomenal; it’s magnificent,” he said. “I would say three-quarters of the people (I meet) comment on how good they look and what a great idea it is.”
