n early March, members of the arts community gathered in downtown Orlando to celebrate the groundbreaking for the 127,750-square-foot expansion of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The expansion includes the construction of Steinmetz Hall and The Green Room and is expected to be completed in 2020.

“There is no doubt that Orlando has become one of the nation’s premier destinations on multiple levels, showcasing theme parks, sports and our very

own world-class arts center,” City of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer said during the groundbreaking ceremonies. “The addition of Steinmetz Hall and The Green Room adds to our city’s vibrant offerings for residents and visitors to enjoy for many years to come.”

The Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts already features the 2,700-seat Walt Disney Theater and the 300-seat Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater. The addition of the Steinmetz Hall — consisting of 1,700 seats — will complete the original vision for the Dr. Phillips Center.

center and, just a few years later, be able to complete the original vision with three accomplished theaters, acoustically and theatrically, is an amazing feat and a testament to the great support of the community,” said Kathy Ramsberger, president and CEO of the Dr. Phillips Center.

Unlike the Walt Disney Theater or the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater, Steinmetz Hall is being constructed for acoustical purposes.

Once completed, the three-tiered hall will feature unplugged performances — the sound for each performance will rely on the acoustics of the theater rather than a sound system.

An additional feature of the hall is the stage, which will have

the ability to be hydraulically lengthened, shortened or even lowered to create a flat floor.

The construction of Steinmetz Hall is highly anticipated by several performing-arts organizations in the Orlando area that will call the space home once it is completed. That list includes the Dr. Phillips Center Jazz Orchestra, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orlando Ballet and the Orlando Opera.

“The opening of Steinmetz Hall is going to represent an incredible leap forward for Central Florida,” said Christopher Barton, executive director of the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra. “Everything about our patrons’ experience at an Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra concert is going to be enhanced — from the way we gather together in the beautiful public spaces at the Dr. Phillips Center to how we hear the orchestra at its very best in a room perfectly designed for live symphonic music. I am incredibly excited to be leading the Philharmonic at such a pivotal moment for our organization and the community.”

The expansion also includes the construction of The Green Room, which is a 3,000-squarefoot rehearsal space for perform-

ers and guests. The space, which will feature its own separate entrance from South Street, also may be used for intimate performance settings.

Phase 1 of the Dr. Phillips Center, which included the construction of the Walt Disney Theater and the Alexis and Jim Pugh Theater, was completed in 2014.

Because designing an acoustic theater is both architecturally demanding and costly, leaders of the performing-arts center decided to build Steinmetz Hall at a later date as part of the Phase 2 construction.

Currently, the estimated cost of the Phase 2 is $237.5 million.

So far, the Dr. Phillips Center has raised about $222.8 million and is working to raise the remaining funds. But board members expressed confidence at raising the additional $14.7 million because of the excitement surrounding the construction of Phase 2.

The building sits on a nine-acre site and will consist of an estimated 330,000 square feet at the end of the Phase 2 construction. Once completed, the Dr. Phillips Center will have the capacity to seat about 4,700 people throughout its three theaters.
