Not many middle-school students can say they capped off their school year by making it on national television.

Then again, the students at Gotha Middle aren’t your ordinary middle-schoolers.

“Some of the boys were being kind of annoying,” Cristello said.

“They were like, ‘I don’t want to get made fun of.’ … We convinced them to do it, (but it) was kind of hard to convince them.”

When Dillon found out the lipdub video made it on the “Today” show, she wasn’t initially aware of how big that was, she said.

“I didn’t even know what the ‘Today’ show was,” Dillon said.

“I was like ‘Is that a big deal?’

(My mom) was like, ‘It’s national news. Your lip dub made national news.’ … I was just really, really excited, because it was something we all worked so hard on, even if it was just (shown for) a few seconds.”

Gotha Middle created its first lip-dub video in 2014, but the school stopped doing them for a few years. They started again during the 2017-18 school year, which was around the time Emery became principal. She said one of the reasons why she decided to bring the lip-dub videos back was to help build a positive culture around the school.

“When I got here in the middle of last (school) year, we kind of wanted to start to build a positive perception of the school and (show) what we were doing to change the culture of the school,” Emery said. “One of the things we’ve been focusing on this year is promoting a culture of kindness and positivity.”

ity among the students at Gotha Middle. The school also began doing “Fun Friday videos” with the students and even revamped the morning news announcements. In addition to building positivity among students, the video also served as an incentive for the eighth-grade students throughout the school year, Emery said.

“You get to see it coming up (throughout middle school), and then in eighth grade, you get to have a these starring parts if you want,” she said. “But to do that, you need to do what we need you to do the other 175 days out of the (school) year. I need you on task, I need you (in) class on time, I need you to be well-behaved and follow the rules.”

Although the video acts as an incentive, Dillon and Cristello both agreed doing it also helped bring the students together.

“Some people (who) weren’t close friends had parts together, Cristello said. “I think that made them become a little closer, because they had to figure out what they wanted to do and stuff like that.”

“I had talked to people and became closer with people that I had never seen in school before,” Dillon said. “I try to be nice to everyone and be friends with everyone, but there’s still … people I don’t even know, and I got to know a lot of people through this (video) and through the process.”

Celebrating a family’s legacy Louise Krazit, of Gotha, gathered with about 100 relatives of multiple generations for a family reunion in Ocoee.

ouise Krazit, now 88, remembers the moment she met her future husband at the rollerskating rink in Ocala. She was with her school friend, Betty, whose older brother was the handsome Bennie. She also tried to be in the right place when Bennie dropped off Betty at school.

Louise eventually would marry Bennie, and that union lasted 63 years before his death in 2013. The couple found themselves in Gotha, where they lived for 20 years and where she lives still today. She and Betty remain close friends.

On Saturday, Louise Krazit, Betty Harvey and nearly 100 other Krazits gathered for a family reunion in Ocoee to celebrate the story of Franz “Frank” and Agnes Krajasitz, Austrian immigrants who came to America in 1910 for a better life. She was 16, and he was 18.

The couple married after settling in Michigan, changed their last name to Krazit and eventually had 14 children, two of whom died in their youth.

Betty, the second youngest of the 12, is the last living Krazit child and resides in St. Petersburg.

The family reunion was attended by relatives from throughout the United States. Louise — who has three children, six grandchildren and soon-to-be-nine greatgrandchildren — said this gathering takes place nearly every year in different parts of the state. A Krazit family Facebook page has allowed relatives to stay in touch and to share news and photos, including

With population growth comes the need for more shopping, restaurants and retail, and Hamlin’s offerings are set to grow again by the end of the year.

Rave Commercial recently introduced its newest project, called Hamlin Plaza. It will be located at 5300 Hamlin Groves Trail in Winter Garden, and plans call for 40,000 square feet of retail, medical and office space across 4 acres.

According to a Horizon Westarea residential study posted

by Rave Commercial, as of December, there were more than 176,000 residents living in the Horizon West area. And with about 1,000 people moving to Orange County weekly according to county statistics, the number is expected to grow.

Hamlin Plaza developers said Rave Commercial chose to build in Hamlin, because it is the second fastest-growing master-planned community in the nation. The mixed-use development will sit west of Hamlin Groves Trail, south of New Independence Parkway and the Publix-anchored shopping plaza, and east of The Cove at Hamlin.

“Our focus is on retail, medical and office tenants,” said Venkata Rapitavi, a developer with Rave Commercial. “This is the No. 1 growing place in Greater Orlando.”

Hamlin Plaza has been in the works for a few years, Rapitavi said, and it is currently in the Orange County permitting phase. He hopes to be able to break ground by the third quarter of 2019 and said Rave already has leased out about 8,000 square feet but did not name any tenants.

Site plans call for four buildings in the plaza, and Rave Commercial is still looking to lease 32,000 square feet of them.

For this project, commissioners approved amending the property’s future landuse designation from low density residential, low-medium density residential, and rural/agricultural to Planned Development-Commercial/Office/Medium Density Residential/Low Density Residential/Senior Living/Conservation (PD-C/O/MDR/LDR/Senior Living/CONS).

In association with the landuse map amendment, commissioners also approved a substantial change request to revise the development program of three tracts within the project to allow for the development of 301 single-family dwelling units, 400 multi-family dwelling units (apartments), 200 senior- living units, 150,000 square feet of retail and office uses and a five-acre Orange County park. This request also included 25 waivers from the Orange County Code.

O-Town West encompasses an 84.32-acre property that is generally located north of Interstate 4, south of Fenton Street and east of Lake Ruby. County leaders voted to amend that property’s future land-use designation from activity center mixed use, activity center residential, and low-medium density residential to Planned Development-Commercial/ Medium-High Density Residential. Commissioners also approved to rezone the property from A-2 (Farmland Rural District) and PD to all PD (Planned Development District) (Hannah Smith Property PD). The changes allow for the development of 1,300 residential dwelling units, and up to 415,142 square feet of commercial uses.

The O-Town West development is east of the Kerina Parkside project. Between the two projects is the site of the relief high school for Dr. Phillips and Freedom high schools, which is scheduled to open in 2021. An extension of Daryl Carter Parkway will run through both developments and connect Palm Parkway to Apopka Vineland Road. The state also plans to build an interchange at Daryl Carter Parkway and Interstate 4.

right of way for the Daryl Carter Parkway extension. She added the county’s 2010 comprehensive plan supports mixed-use developments.

“In 2010, Orange County updated its comprehensive plan, and at that point in time, they included a number of policies and commitments … (that) was a change in Orange County philosophy,” Fitzgerald said. “(The comp plan now) encourages a mix of uses in these areas that have developed as just a single use.”

Chuck Whittall is president and CEO of Unicorp National Developments, which is developing the O-Town West project. He also spoke on behalf of the Kerina Parkside development. He said the Kerina project will include upscale apartments and a neighborhood grocery store.

“We have a signed letter of intent with Publix to go here,” Whittall said. “I know there were some emails saying that we’re concerned about the apartments (bringing) crime. The apartments we’re building run from $1,400 to $2,200 a month.”

Fourteen individuals voiced their thoughts on the Kerina Parkside project, but no speakers signed up to speak about the O-Town West project.

Attorney Frank Ruggieri, of The Ruggieri Law Firm PA, spoke on behalf of residents against the Kerina Parkside project. He argued the residents need a buffer from the nearby commercial and tourist areas, and said the area should remain residential.

“This is a unique area, and I think it’s unique because of the character … of the area and its proximity to the attractions in Lake Buena Vista,” Ruggieri said.

“The bottom line is these people need a buffer, and they need a … means to maintain their sense of community. And they need this

He said one of the floors of the office building will become the new headquarters for Unicorp, and the rest will be filled with other tenants. He added there isn’t much Class-A office space in the area.

“Once you get past Millenia Mall, there’s not much by way of office product moving west or south,” Hoffman said. “This will bring a much-needed supply of Class-A office space to the south Orlando market.”

Unicorp will occupy the third floor of the office building, which can be built up to 13 stories high, and the first and second floors both will be retail, Hoffman said.

“We have some groups that we’re talking to about some future commitments to the building that are big household names everyone would recognize, as well as more local, homegrown businesses with local decision-makers,” Hoffman said.

Todd Hockenberry is a former president of the Dr. Phillips Little League. He spoke in support of the Kerina Parkside project because it includes land set aside for ball fields for the league. The league will need to relocate because Dr.

“We’re supporting this project because we’re really running out of options,” Hockenberry said.

“There’s not many places you can put fields of five acres in Dr. Phillips. … Without this project, without the generosity of the developers and everybody else involved, I’m not sure what the future of baseball is in Dr. Phillips.”

District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey motioned to approve the requests for both projects with added conditions. The Kerina Parkside project was approved with added conditions related to alcohol services, lot sizes and revising a condition related to the park that will be in the development, among other conditions.

O-Town West was approved with a condition to reduce the residential units from 1,800 to 1,300.

“The final concern was they didn’t want any standalone bars in the neighborhood retail (area), so that’s a restriction I would like to put in there is that we don’t have any bars (in the Kerina development),” VanderLey said. “They didn’t have an objection to a restaurant with a bar, but it would have to be 51% food sales, and therefore more of a restaurant characteristic.”

VanderLey reminded residents the Kerina Parkside property still would have been able to develop under its current entitlements even if the commission denied the requested actions for the project.

“With the current entitlements, the idea that nothing is going to happen there, I think we’re all agreeing that that’s not the case,” VanderLey said. “It would be lovely if I could look at it through a single lens, but I have to look at it as a responsibility to the community.”

PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT

sion, a shopping area and boardwalk will be built on the edge of Lake Hancock.

Village I is expected to see the most growth, but only two developments have been approved.

Spring Grove has been approved for two phases at 327 units, and Jaffers at Spring Grove is under construction.

Lake Reams Road Park also is expected to open in 2021, and Bentonshire Park is expected to follow in 2022. New parks will follow the opening of the new elementary schools, and Horizon West trails are planned to connect to the West Orange Trail, while Horizon West Regional Park will be approved for the final time in February 2020.

TRANSPORTATION, TRAFFIC

County officials discussed the construction of three new stoplights along Ficquette Road — set for the intersections at Overstreet Road, New Independence Parkway, and Reams Road and Summerlake Park Boulevard. Temporary stop signs have been approved and placed, while a stoplight is planned to be built in four to six weeks.

A signal will be placed at State Road 535 and Lachlan Road at the Westside Shoppes, while speed feedback signs are scheduled to be placed outside of Windermere High School before the upcoming school year. Speed tables and flashing beacons will be set up at Avalon and Old YMCA roads.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS

Orange County Public Schools has plans to open 14 new schools in West Orange by 2028, said District 4 Orange County School Board Member Pam Gould. Three — two elementaries and one middle — will be opening this fall, and another three opening in 2020.

CRIME AND FIRE SAFETY

The crime rate has dropped 3% in Horizon West. However, auto burglaries are up 96%, and Orange County Sheriff’s Office Captain Tony Marlow encouraged residents to lock their car doors.

In 1957, forward-looking officials from Apopka, Clermont and Winter Garden recognized the need to deliver residents a domestic, reliable, environmentally-friendly and costeffective energy source – natural gas. These leaders joined together to form a gas utility district, petitioning the legislature of the State of Florida. Two years later, House Bill No. 2195, “Act of Florida Legislature Creating the Lake Apopka Natural Gas District,” was passed. With this enactment, their vision was realized, and the Lake Apopka Natural Gas District was born.

Windermere Prep student named National Merit Scholar Finalist HANNAH SWAYZE NEWS EDITOR

To Andrew Hunter, actually saying that he graduated high school still is weird.

“It still really hasn’t hit yet,” Hunter said. “It’s just happening so fast because it does feel like yesterday I was just a little 6-year-old kid going to Windermere Prep for the first time.”

Hunter began school at Windermere Preparatory School in 2006.

He was an IB diploma candidate, captain of both the soccer and lacrosse teams — both of which he played varsity all four years — MVP in lacrosse and recipient of the 2019 Windermere Preparatory School Academic Athlete of the Year while in the top 10 of the Class of 2019.

On top of his awards for both sports and athletics, Hunter was also named a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation honors academic achievements of high school students each year in the U.S. While not named a National Merit Scholar, Hunter became a finalist, an honor he shares with only 15,000 other high-schoolers in the country.

kids around the country were also being considered for it,” Hunter said.

Reflecting on his time in school, with all of the responsibility and challenges, Hunter described it as a balancing act. In addition to sports and academics, Hunter also was an editor of the school’s yearbook and for a final project he raised more than $2,000 for Cystic Fibrosis research.

He said the academics at Windermere Prep were difficult, but he always made a point to try to not get too weighed down by the responsibilities.

Luckily, his school was support-

ive and his friends were there for him, and going through the same thing, he said. Throughout the years, Windermere Prep became like his second home.

“Everyone there is super supportive; it’s not like a competition between people,” said Hunter.

“Everybody helps everybody there grow.”

Hunter said he’ll miss his friends, teachers, coaches and the community around the school more than anything.

Jacob Doss, athletic director at Windermere Preparatory School, had high praise for Hunter. He said the school will miss his leadership

both on and off the field.

“Andrew was the epitome of what a student athlete at Windermere Prep should strive to be,” Doss said.

Now with graduation in the past, Hunter is looking to the future. In the fall, he plans on attending the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He is looking forward to exploring a few different programs before settling on one field of study.

“We’ve been supportive of our boys not necessarily having to know exactly what they’re going to be or what they’re going to do and going to a place where they’re going to explore lots of different things,” Michele Hunter, Andrew’s mother, said. “He’s a really wellrounded student (and) did well in everything. So, he just has to find what he’s passionate about.”

Hunter knows a few people in the area, but for the most part, come fall, he’ll be starting over in a new state. Having visited the campus, Hunter said he felt at home right away. As a bonus, sports have a lot to do with campus culture. And though Hunter doesn’t plan on playing soccer or lacrosse beyond clubs or intramurals, he still plans on being involved and playing when he can.

Visiting in March, Hunter and his parents experienced the campus right at peak basketball season as the school’s team had just progressed into the final four of NCAA March Madness, which they ultimately won. His mother even met

“It’s a great school, and I’m humbled to be able to go there,” Hunter said.

There still are a few months before orientation, and with the future ahead of him, Hunter seems to be taking it one step at at time.

At the moment, he’s getting ready for a summer of traveling with family and friends before he starts his next phase of life in the fall.

Two arrested after body discovered in Dr. Phillips Greg Palermo, 50, and Donald Morrison, 59, were arrested by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office after they buried the body of an overdose victim, according to arrest reports.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrested two men Friday, June 7, after they admitted to burying the body of a friend who had died of an overdose, according to an arrest report.

Greg Palermo, 50, and Donald Morrison, 59, were charged with tampering with physical evidence, mishandling dead human remains and failure to report a death after investigators discovered the body of Brandon Boone in the back yard of a Dr. Phillips home in April.

Homicide Sgt. Joe Covelli said during a press conference agents in the OCSO narcotics unit received information saying there was a drug overdose at 5015 Glasgow Ave. and that there was a body buried there. He said an investigation and search of the home led to the discovery of the body of Boone, who was buried in the yard behind the home.

On April 14, Boone’s body was exhumed from the property. Covelli confirmed that Boone died from an overdose of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

According to arrest records, both Palermo and Morrison admitted to burying Boone’s body in a 10-foot grave fearing an investigation because of the nature of his death.

Florida law protects bystanders who call 911 to report overdoses to emergency services. Law enforcement would have investigated the death but would not have pursued drug charges, according to the OCSO.

Records state Palermo believed law enforcement was after him “because of the company he keeps,” and he got scared and that burying Boone’s body was the “smartest thing to do.”

Morrison told detectives they “made a little shift with the plastic so people really couldn’t see what was going on and started digging a hole,” arrest records state.

Morrison and Palermo both were held in lieu of a $11,500 bond as of June 7.

According to the OCSO, there have been 43 confirmed overdose deaths in Orange County as of June 9 this year, a significant decrease from last year when that number was at 83.

Glenn and Jennifer Pilson will open a new location of the counter-service franchise Chicken Salad Chick this fall in Westside Shoppes in Horizon West.

Chicken Salad Chick is a Southern-style restaurant that started in Auburn, Alabama, when Stacy Brown, a stay-at-home-mom started making chicken salad in her own kitchen at home and selling it door to door. Once the health department caught on, she decided she didn’t want to stop and opened her own business.

Today, Chicken Salad Chick has more than 100 locations.

The menu features a large variety of chicken salad dishes with a home-y atmosphere and healthy options.

“Eighty-three percent of our clientele are women and 17% consists of men, so it’s more of mom/ soccer-mom style,” Glenn Pilson said. “(The style is) very clean, like you’re at your grandmother’s house.”

Before Chicken Salad Chick, Jennifer and Glenn Pilson owned a handful of Five Guys Burgers and Fries franchise locations in Florida with Jennifer’s parents. Then, when Jennifer’s parents retired, the Pilsons decided they wanted a change of pace. They sold the Five Guys Burgers and Fries restaurants

The two were drawn to the franchise for a number of reasons, among them being the clean and quick operations and the uniqueness of the restaurant.

“No other concept down here has 12 different kinds of chicken salad and then a chicken salad every month to make it 13,” Glenn said.

Although both restaurants prepare all of their food fresh, at Chicken Salad Chick, there’s no grease to clean, shorter ticket times and no late nights. Furthermore, the restaurant is closed on Sundays, a nice change of pace for the Pilsons.

Although the restaurant is geared with a more Southern, feminine touch, Glenn said there really is an option for everyone.

The menu has keto- and veganfriendly items, not to mention enough flavors of chicken salad to satisfy the most particular eaters.

Glenn said he has customers come in several times a week just to try different chicken salad flavors.

“Its a wide-variety menu and if we can just get Chicken Salad Chick’s name out there,” Glenn said. “I think we would be one of the top restaurants in the Orlando area.”

Windermere Little League prepares for All-Star season As baseball enters districts and softball readies for sectionals, WLL is hoping to start the summer off with some hardware.

Despite the days of dreary, wet weather that passed over the state in the recent week, nothing — not even storms — are souring the excitement around Windermere Little League.

That’s because this month kicks off the start of the League’s AllStar baseball and softball seasons, which rev up this Saturday over at the Dr. Phillips Little League ballfields.

There, WLL will take on Winter Garden, Dr. Phillips and South

Lake in the “Tournament of Champions” — the 8/9 year olds team — which will run simultaneously with the district tourney for the 9/10 All-Star teams. The other three baseball teams — 10/11, Majors (10-12) and Juniors (13/14) — will play the following week.

“Usually our baseball teams that win districts do OK in sectionals,” said Patryk Ozim, an assistant on the 11s softball team and scheduler for the League.

Recently selected to the 2019 Dr. Phillips Little League 10s All-Star team, Aidan Williams is a player who has found success on the mound and at catcher and shortstop. Williams has been a part of DPLL for six seasons now, and he doesn’t plan on quitting any time soon.

How long have you been playing baseball?

At first I didn’t want to play, but my parents made me and I loved it so much that I kept going and now I just don’t want to stop doing it. This is my sixth season.

What’s been your favorite part about playing the game?

It’s fun and if you make a mistake then you can redeem yourself.

What’s the hardest part about baseball?

Probably throwing in the box (when pitching). Because it’s like a small box that you have to throw strikes in.

Coming into this season, was there anything you were looking to work on?

Yeah, like my dad said, “There is no walking around on the field,” so I just keep hustling.

You play a few positions, but do you have a favorite?

Shortstop, because for me I feel like I get the most action there. You get the ball most, and if the outfielder gets the ball you get to be the cutoff man.

What’s that like, playing for your dad (the team’s assistant coach)?

It’s something that I enjoy, because he helps me a lot and if I’m going through a hard time I can ask him and then he’ll help me.

What would you say have been the best words advice you’ve been given?

Never give up.

What’s your favorite thing about playing with this team?

They’re always excited and it’s just fun to play with them, because they always bring you up when you make a mistake.

Is there a moment that stands out to you?

Probably last year’s All-Stars championship game. It wasn’t really my moment, but it was my team’s moment — I loved how we work as a team and never gave up.

We were going against Winter Garden and even in the hard times we kept sticking with it.

Would you like to play baseball in high school? And would you like to stay at pitcher?

Yeah, and I like pitcher, but I’m hoping to play somewhere else, because I can play any position.

What do you enjoy like doing in your free time?

Either playing video games or playing with my brother.

Do you have a favorite MLB player or team that you like to follow?

than just about any sport out there. The sport’s rapid growth is something that Michael Stringer — the girls flag football coach at Windermere High — is more than happy to see.

“The girls are very competitive — you’ll be shocked to see how (hard) a girl in our program takes a loss, and how much it leaves a sour taste in their mouth,” Stringer said. “Just to see that competitive edge in flag — translating over from the boy’s side in regular football — is kind of what got me into it. It’s sometimes higher than what the boys are doing.”

Stringer had been serving as the assistant coach for the team since it started up two seasons ago, but officially took over as the head coach after the end of this previous season following Russell Williams being named the school’s new athletic director.

Having been with the program since the beginning, Stringer has seen the girls flag football team develop into something to be proud of.

But like any fledgling program, the Wolverines’ first season was — for lack of better words — not great. The growing pains were there, and most of the girls who showed up to participate in the first year had never played before.

“We probably only had — on our varsity — four girls who played flag football when they were at West Orange,” Stringer said. “So for the most part, this was a brand-new sport for a lot of our girls.”

Two of those four girls — Brinley Griffitts and Felicity Kaley — are rising seniors. Both Kaley and Griffitts were introduced to the sport when they were at West Orange High — though they did it for different reasons.

soccer, it was all about trying something new and exciting, while for Griffitts it was something that she was naturally drawn to — thanks to growing up with two older brothers who played football.

“I loved it so much, because it was a fun sport and (there) was nothing too serious about it at West Orange,” said Griffitts, who plays both wide receiver and linebacker. “But then when we moved to Windermere it just got more fun and competitive too — I’m a very competitive person.”

When she first arrived at Windermere High, Griffitts said there was also a big change to how she was used to practicing.

At West Orange High the girls on the team were familiar with the sport and therefore they could practice at a bit of a faster tempo.

It was a process that required patience, but was totally worth it, she said. And being one of the few players with experience changed up her own role on the team, as well.

“It made me become more of a leader than I had been, and I just loved teaching the girls and looking at their progress,” Griffitts said. “Just being a leader to them and seeing how well our team went from zero to 100 (was great).”

Among the girls new to the sport included fellow rising

senior Julia Neves, who picked up flag football when she was in her sophomore year at Windermere High.

“It was a new sport, and all my friends were doing it, so I thought, ‘Why not?,’” said Neves, who plays linebacker.

“I’ve met some of my best friends doing it, and I’ve improved so much since I started.”

In their second season, the Wolverines would start the season off 0-6, but would turn a total 180 — going 5-1 to finish off the regular season. That turnaround alone, and the growth that comes with starting a new culture, is something that tells Stringer and his players that something is starting to click.

A culture shift is difficult, and it’s not something that just happens without hard work and gritty players like Griffitts, Neves and Kaley. And it’s because of players like them that they see their sport grow bigger than anyone could have ever imagined.

But the question remains — why is this sport growing so fast?

If you ask the players, they’ll give you the real answer.

“As society changes and as everything slowly starts changing, girls are starting to get more into a sport like flag football,” Kaley said. “And I think when someone starts playing flag football, they see how fun it is and as it goes on, it spreads outward.”

went to the state tournament.

“The girls, on the flip, are powerhouses in softball — they’ve won the state the last two years in a row at the 10-year-old level, and they were runners-up last year at the 11-and-12 year-old level,” he said. “It’s expected that the 12s are going to just absolutely win the state, win the southeast regionals and move on to — possibly — the Little League World Series in Portland.”

Unlike the baseball teams, Windermere’s softball teams skip district tournaments and go straight through to the sectional tournament. The reason for the jump is due to a lack of teams in the surrounding area.

While Ozim said there was a lot to look forward to with all of the teams — including the 11s — there’s an added air of interest in the Majors softball team.

And that excitement comes with good reason, as the Majors team has a history of excellence, which includes making it all the way to the Little League World Series back in 2012. There in

Portland, Oregon, Windermere finished runner-up after falling to Albuquerque, New Mexico, in the finals.

“That’s certainly the goal — to be playing in Oregon in August,” said head coach Rex Smith.

“Right now we are just getting together — this is just the first week we’ve been practicing — so I think there is just a ton of excitement right now, and they know that we have a talented group, and so I think they’re all excited to be on it and playing with each other.

“Maybe some of them are nervous, because they’re with with new girls, so (we’re) just getting through all of that so we can build up confidence and start getting them comfortable around each other,” he said.

While there are some new faces on the team who are eager to get going and find their own success, there also are numerous girls who have played alongside each other over the last few years.

Two years ago several of the girls on this year’s team won states and got to go on to the

southeast regional, and then last year those same girls finished runner-up in their division. So while members of the team have tasted success, there’s still the need to bring the entire squad together — including the familiar and unfamiliar faces.

Luckily for Smith, he’ll be heading into sectionals — and hopefully more — with a stacked roster filled with some of the best softball players from the area.

“We’ve got a very talented team — all the girls on the team have been playing at a pretty competitive level of softball for a while,” Smith said. “They’ve dedicated a lot of time to softball, and it’s a really well-rounded team. There really isn’t any weakness when you look at the roster across all the girls that are here.

“Anybody can step up in any game that we get into and have a big moment,” he said. “We have good pitching, we have good catchers and we have strong players at every position on the field. I’m feeling really good about the talent we have on the team.”

From Monday, June 10, to Thursday, June 13, campers got the chance to learn fundamentals of the game and participate in shooting games under the tutelage of Windermere varsity head basketball coach Mark Griseck and the Wolverines coaching staff.

Alongside the coaching staff, members of the Wolverines varsity team were on hand to help teach and also cheer on the young campers as they enjoyed a morning of basketball.

FROM THE WINTER GARDEN HERITAGE FOUNDATION

THROWBACK THURSDAY JUNE 10, 1976 There weren’t as many apartment complexes in Winter Garden as there are now, but in a 1976 advertisement in The Winter Garden Times, Inland Seas offered garden villas on its property on West Bay Street overlooking Lake Apopka.

One-, two- and three-bedroom apartments were available for $155, $175 and $200, respectively.

Inland Seas continues to provide locals with another living option, although the prices don’t reflect 1976 anymore. Today, residents can rent an apartment there for prices starting at $850, $900 and $1,090, respectively.

FROM THE ARCHIVES Antonia Margarethe Haltenhoff moved to Oakland from Brooklyn, New York, around 1905. She took the teacher’s exam and began teaching at Tangerine in northwest Orange County and then taught for almost six years in Oakland and Tildenville. Antonia next taught at the Boggy Creek School in south Orange County.

The photograph shows Antonia with her students, although the location has not been verified.

The mission of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is to preserve the heritage and architecture of Winter Garden while creating new cultural experiences. The Foundation also preserves the material culture of West Orange County, using it to educate the area’s youth on the community’s rich history.

WATER HEATERS/ POOL AND SPA HEATERS

Most water, pool and spa heaters have a safety valve which will automatically shut off the flow of gas if the pilot light goes out. Tankless water heaters need a UPS backup device, connection to a 120V standby generator or a 12V inverter.

When hurricane season is upon us, we as Floridians, should be familiar with gas safety. When a hurricane threatens, leave the gas on unless notified by us. Because most gas facilities are located underground, rarely does a hurricane threaten your service.

RANGE

Gas ranges with pilot lights require no additional care.

Continue to cook as usual. When the electricity is off, surface top burners with electric ignition can be easily lit.

Simply: Light match (preferably a wooden match) Hold match next to the top burner cap Then turn the control knob to the “light” or “high” setting. The burner will light and you can adjust the flame.

Most ovens and broilers on ranges with electric ignition cannot be used when the power is off.

Leave the gas on. Turning off the gas could result in unnecessary delays in restoring your service. It is not necessary to turn off the gas at your meter or, if you use propane, at your tank. Should Lake Apopka Natural Gas deem it necessary to turn off the service, Company representatives will inform you. By leaving the gas on, you will be able to cook and, as long as there is a reliable supply of water, you will have hot water. Leaving gas on also helps you avoid reconnection fees.

AFTER THE STORM Clean-up efforts after previous hurricanes show that more gas lines are broken during cleanup than during the actual storm. Before removing fallen trees, call for a FREE utility line location

by Dialing 8-1-1.

IF YOU SMELL GAS:

A portable grill should either be moved inside or securely tied down outside. A grill with a patio base should either be bolted down or disconnected and brought inside. A grill with a permanent post is usually secure and does not need any additional tie down. The lid of any gas grill remaining outside should be securely tied closed to prevent it from snapping open.

Most dryers have a safety valve which automatically shut off the flow of gas. In addition, your gas dryer needs electricity to operate.

Do not do anything to cause a spark (i.e., using a garage door opener, portable phone, etc.). Immediately evacuate the premises and call Lake Apopka Natural Gas District’s 24/7 emergency number at 800.542.3344 or 9-1-1. It is important to call from a telephone away from the building where you smell gas. In the case of a gas leak, our first responsibility is to make sure the area is safe. Service will be restored as soon as possible. All District personnel carry identification and will, upon request, show their identification before entering your home.

IF FLOODING OCCURS:

If your home or business was flooded and gas appliances were underwater, do not attempt to operate the appliances. Water can cause damage to the internal safety mechanism and create a hazardous condition. Call Lake Apopka Natural Gas or a qualified appliance contractor for a safety inspection and to relight the pilot lights on your appliances.

Check yard for loose items. Move and secure items not firmly installed before the storm arrives. This includes grills, patio furniture, swings, pool equipment and supplies, even water hose reels. Items such as these can be blown around by hurricane winds causing unnecessary damage to your home, propane tank or gas meter.
