Plans are moving forward for a proposal for a 60-room hotel in downtown Winter Garden after the city’s Planning and Zoning Board recommended approval for the rezoning of the potential property Monday, June 3.

Oakland approves final Hull Island plat M/I Homes has started construction on close to a dozen homes in the town’s newest westside neighborhood.

The teens are sweaty and sore when they come in from physical-training exercises. It’s hot outside, and these are militarycaliber workouts.

But they’re still smiling, congratulating one another on a good workout session, looking fulfilled and ready to seize the day.

This group of 11- to 17-yearolds comprises the Lone Sailor Division, an Ocoee-based unit of the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps program.

The USNCC was founded in 1958 by the Navy League of the United States at the request of the Department of the Navy. In 1962 it was chartered as a nonprofit youth organization with an emphasis toward the sea-going services of the U.S. It was only for boys up until 1974, when the law was amended to allow girls to participate.

The Lone Sailor Division is wrapping up its first year of operation. The group serves the community and the West Orange area by assisting in events as a color guard, parking attendants, ushers and greeters. They also help others through storm assistance and charity fundraising.

However, the division’s cadets also meet once a month during the school year for two eighthour weekend drill days. They are exposed to a variety of training and activities, such as culinary and nutrition, STEM, cyber security, history and proper military etiquette and exercises. They also participate in a physical training hour on drill days.

ENS Rafael Lopes is the unit’s executive officer and oversees day-to-day operations. He estimates that he put in 800 volunteer hours in the last year, but the Lone Sailor Division and his

The Oakland Town Commission has given its final approval to the plans for Hull Island at Oakland.

The vote, during the commission’s May 28 meeting, included documents outlining the new neighborhood’s homeowners association.

The M/I Homes community of 110 single-family dwellings will lie on 73 acres with an amenity area, conservation space and two parks — Lakeside Park and Karst Park. The town of Oakland and Oakland Nature Preserve have been working with M/I Homes to plan the park space and associated pier.

Multiple changes — at the Town Commission’s request — have been made since the project first was presented to the commission in 2017. Among them, the width of the lakefront lots was changed from 65 feet to a minimum of 80 feet, several lots were eliminated in the plans to save a number of large trees, and the developer agreed to make traffic improvements along Simeon Road and Hull Island Drive.

A marker placed previously in honor of the Hull family at Hull Island’s entrance will remain and be incorporated into the entrance to the subdivision, as well.

“The Navy wanted to have a program to show the youth of the U.S. what maritime operations was all about and what the Navy did,” Lopes said. “There’s always been a belief that the military gives you an incredible (sense) of discipline and teamwork. Youth (have) become very isolated the last 50 years or so, and the idea is to take them and put them in a positive team.”

Vignetti Recreation Center in Ocoee. Currently, there are 18 members, but Lopes said it is expected to grow to at least 21 this fall. And although there is a military foundation, Lopes said the goal is to support each cadet and give him or her the tools necessary to be successful in their future endeavors.

Cadets have to pass the Navy’s physical-readiness test, and they also have volunteer instructors and real-life experiences. The cadets have done special workouts, toured a Carnival cruise ship to learn about ship operations, participated in Navy Seal-style PT and learned survival skills.

Instructor Michelle Schwab’s daughter, Seaman Olivia Schwab, will be 15 soon and has been a cadet for two years. Olivia said she wants to be a meteorologist or engineer in the Navy or Air Force and has learned much about aviation and leadership through the Lone Sailor Division.

“You can see the future is a lot brighter (through them),” Schwab

said. “You want to teach them humility, failure and getting back up. Their faces when you encourage them and they’ve seen that they failed and now they fixed it … nobody’s perfect. Lots of these teens don’t understand anymore that they can’t be perfect, but they need to learn in an encouraging environment so they can pick themselves up and move on.”

Lopes’ son, Chief Petty Officer Carter Lopes, is 17 and has been a Sea Cadet for six years now. He wants to first obtain a bachelor’s degree in nursing but will join an ROTC program during college to become a commissioned officer in the Army. His goal is to join the U.S. Army Special Forces.

Additionally, Carter Lopes is one of only 16 cadets — out of the 20,000 nationwide — chosen for the international experience program. He will head to Hong Kong for one-and-a-half weeks in July to learn and serve as a diplomat for the Sea Cadets program and the country.

n The Oakland Town Commission awarded the bid for the Oakland wastewater collection and transmission system to Valencia Construction Group Inc. in the amount of $426,578. That will further the town’s sewer initiative.

Staff had elected to create one project with two separate components: the West Oakland Avenue Extension and the Cemetery Extension. n The commission approved the purchase and sale agreement of vacant property at 151 Tubb St., which lies in the Town Center. The $195,000 price tag is above appraisal, according to Town Manager Steve Koontz, but the town expects to use the property for future development as an amenity for residents. Administrative impact fees are being used to fund part of the purchase. n Mayor Kathy Stark read a proclamation declaring May 19-25 National Public Works Week and praised Public Works Director Mike Parker and his staff.

“I just don’t think that people understand the depth of the dedication and hard work,” she said of the department.

very nice, very caring, loving and sharing. He doesn’t like anybody getting bullied. All the kids around the neighborhood will tell you: If anybody tried to bully the smallest guy, he would go after the guy.

He doesn’t like to see anyone get bullied.”

Haggins is appealing to the community to help find his son, B.J., who police say was the victim of a possible shooting and abduction Friday, May 31.

The father is distraught over his son’s disappearance and hopes someone will come forward with information leading to B.J.’s whereabouts. He’s anxious, too, to have the community see a photo of B.J. other than the mugshot that has been circulating.

When a child is abducted, it’s a scramble to get his or her photo out to as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time.

Sometimes, the available photo happens to be a mugshot.

Haggins said B.J. is an excellent son, but he acknowledges the teen did have a brush with the law when he and a friend were arrested and charged with taking a child’s scooter and spent 14 days at the Orange Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

B.J. paid restitution, and the charges were dropped, Haggins said.

Haggins has had custody of his son since he was 2 years old. B.J. was diagnosed with attentiondeficit/hyperactivity disorder when he was younger and sometimes struggled in school, Haggins said. He was transferred from Maxey Elementary to Dillard Street Elementary after the third grade because of the special programs available.

B.J. attended Lakeview Middle School, as well, and will be a junior at West Orange High School in the fall.

“I have no idea what’s going on,” Haggins said. “I went to McDonald’s to get some breakfast. When I came back, he was gone.”

Haggins said he misses his son and hopes he will return safely.

“His smile just lights up your day,” Haggins said. “I call him my Big Jolly Giant.”

POSSIBLE ABDUCTION Winter Garden police responded to a call around noon Friday, May 31, regarding shots fired at the intersection of Lincoln Terrace and Eleventh Street. According to police, officers were unable to find any evidence of a crime at the scene but later received information that the incident could be connected with the possible shooting and abduction of 16-year-old Bruce “B.J.” Edward Haggins Jr. According to missingkids. org, B.J. was taken by a light-skinned black male with dreadlocks driving a dark gray Infiniti G37. B.J. is about 6-foot-2 and 180 pounds and was last seen wearing a gray shirt, according to missing kids.org.

Police classified Haggins as a missing juvenile and issued an AMBER Alert. There were no updates as of Monday afternoon, said Police Capt.

eep and truck enthusiasts had a blast all while supporting a good cause at the first Roaring Jeep and Truck Show Saturday, June 1, at the corner of Maguire Road and Geneva Street in Ocoee. The event included food trucks, local vendors, plenty of tricked-out Jeeps on display and a monster truck demonstration during which several sedans were crushed into a flattened mass of metal.

Proceeds from the event benefited the Ocoee Lions Club — a nonprofit that supports individuals who are sight and hearing impaired.

45,000-square-foot hotel that would include a restaurant, outdoor cafe, events space and second-floor outdoor swimming pool.

So far, three community meetings have been held to discuss the project — the most recent held May 28. At the meeting, City Manager Mike Bollhoefer addressed concerns from residents in a presentation that featured an overhaul of the city’s parking management.

Bollhoefer assessed the state of parking downtown to determine a way to fix complaints such as a lack of parking spots during busy hours, which has led to overflow parking on residential streets.

“We flew drones over our parking lots for a series of days to look at the parking, and there was not a single time — not one time at all — where there wasn’t available parking for people,” Bollhoefer said. “The only time the parking in Winter Garden gets a little tough is a two-hour period on Saturdays, and even then, there was available parking.”

Bollhoefer also acknowledged the assessment was not done during a big event. Still, he believes the problem was not limited space but use.

“Seven days a week, we have more than enough parking,” Bollhoefer said. “We should manage it better.”

creating 220 to 400 new parking spaces in the downtown area.

The plan also would create new parking specifically for golf carts to maximize the use of space, pay for new wayfaring signs, create areas specifically for ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft, add additional resources for bikers, and provide shuttles for a micro-transit system to be used during busy times.

COMMUNITY IMPACT

Other concerns from residents included the location of the hotel, which is right next to a residential area.

Jonathan Green was born and raised in Winter Garden, and his family lived in the city for several generations. He resides in the neighborhood adjacent to the proposed site and worries about the traffic, noise and the influx of people affecting the quality of life in the neighborhood.

“We need to have change,” Green said. “And I know if we’re going to have this kind of thing in the neighborhood, we need to find a way to make it work.”

Bollhoefer said the hotel still will be required to abide by time restrictions enforced in the downtown area. Semitrucks will not be allowed on Bay Street.

There also will be restrictions on noise and light. Dumpsters will be required to be enclosed.

Construction would include an increased setback and landscape buffer along Bay Street to distance the residential properties from the hotel.

To combat any traffic on residential streets, the city is considering installing a roundel — a large, circle traffic feature similar to a flat roundabout — to calm the intersection in the middle of the hotel and residential areas.

The majority of attendees at the meeting spoke in favor of the project; only two of the 17 stated they were against it.

Several business owners spoke in support of the project, citing the need for a place for clients to stay when they are in town and hoping to see the benefits of more consumers downtown shopping and dining.

Dennis Jones owns Winter Garden Wheel Works, a bicycle shop downtown. He said the district needs more people on the streets and more businesses and believes a hotel would be a perfect fit.

“It’s going to bring a lot of life to downtown,” Jones said. “I never have too much business. I like it when it’s busy; I like having a lot of people in the store. I like to go to the restaurant. I don’t mind to wait 10 minutes to get a seat at the restaurant — it’s great. That’s what we want in downtown.”

Ultimately, Bollhoefer said he believes the hotel will be good for downtown in the long run.

“We can’t just rest on our laurels,” Bollhoefer said. “We need to make sure that downtown can be successful in the long term. I think this hotel is one of the projects that’s going to do it and build the other projects coming down the line to make the city get better.”

She and her husband, Paul Sanchez, attended the graduation ceremony held at Canine Companions for Independence Friday, May 24, off Clarcona-Ocoee Road. The ceremony was for all the dogs that graduated from the May class that now will become a partner to someone who is hearing impaired. It was the largest graduating class in two years, with six dogs graduating from the program.

“I’ve seen how (these dogs) can change lives,” Robin Sanchez said.

“They give people independence.”

This is the sixth dog the Sanchez family has raised from a puppy and trained. They taught Elroy more than 30 commands — such as sit, shake and jump — in 18 months before handing him over to CCI, where he finished his training for nine months.

People from all over the country volunteer to be puppy-raisers and do exactly what the Sanchez family did.

At the end of training, each dog is evaluated to see if it meets the qualifications to become a service dog.

“You’re on pins and needles,” Paul Sanchez said.

Elroy is the first dog the Sanchez family has raised to graduate from the Canine Companion program.

“Today, he begins his new journey with his new partner, and we couldn’t be more excited,” Robin Sanchez said.

Elroy became the partner of 22-year-old graduate student Lauren Armstrong. She is from Knoxville, Tennessee, and waited almost two years to get a hearing dog. She spent two weeks training with Elroy to make sure he was a perfect fit.

“I feel a lot more secure and a lot more confident in who I am,” Armstrong said.

Having Elroy means she doesn’t have to worry about not being able to hear a siren or a smoke alarm.

Armstrong recently graduated from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with bachelor’s degrees in speech pathology and audiology.

She starts graduate school in August at UT Knoxville to become an audiologist. But for now, she will go on adventures with Elroy until they start school together.

“He is adorable. … It was worth the wait,” Armstrong said.

“I am so proud of Elroy,” Robin Sanchez said. “He’s going to change her life in so many ways.”

Hungerford purchases some of the supplies, such as diapers, water, shoes, baby formula and feminine hygiene products, in the United States, but she buys most of her supplies in Uganda. One year, she even collected used tablets and smartphones to donate to the teachers and schools at Watoto.

“We bring lots of work shoes,” Hungerford said. “We bring water- purification pills, medication … (and other) stuff that they can’t get there or that are really expensive.”

Although Hungerford typically makes a trip to Uganda every year, she’s unable to go this year because she and her husband are trying to adopt a child. Instead, she will be giving the money she raises to a friend who also volunteers with Watoto Ministries every year.

“I’ve always had a heart for ministry,” Hungerford said. “I think God gives us all a calling. I think God gives us all a direction, and when you don’t follow that direction, it just tugs at you.”

For many high-school students, prom is a night to get dressed up and make lasting, lifelong memories with friends.

But it doesn’t always work out that way.

“My prom was garbage,” said Mindy Hungerford, creator of the 2nd Chance Prom. “I had had a long-term boyfriend all through high school, and two weeks before prom, he dumped me for a freshman. … I took my best friend — who was a guy — and we went and we walk in the door and my exboyfriend is standing right there with his date, and she’s wearing the same dress as me. It was like a bad ‘90s movie.”

The third annual 2nd Chance Prom will be held from 7 to 11 p.m.

Saturday, June 8, at the Jim Beech Recreation Center, 1820 A.D. Mims Road, Ocoee. The event is for adults ages 21 and older and includes dancing, dinner and a prom photo. Guests are welcome to take their own alcoholic beverages.

Money raised from the event goes toward providing life-saving supplies to the women and children in Uganda through the Watoto Church and Watoto Child Care Ministries. Each year, Hungerford travels to Uganda to work with Watoto Ministries, and she takes supplies for the women and children each trip. She pays for travel-related expenses herself and uses the 2nd Chance Prom funds to pay for items the women and children need.

Nora Anne Rowley died peacefully at the age of 96 on Friday, May 24, 2019.

Nora is survived by son, Bruce Rowley, and wife, Ann; daughter, Del Heidt; grandchildren, Kenneth Heidt, Beth Heidt and Lt. Col. Kevin Rowley; nine greatgrandchildren; and three greatgreat-grandchildren.

Nora was born on March 4, 1923, in Cartersville, Georgia.

She met her husband, Kenneth Rowley, in 1942 and relocated to Winter Garden, Florida, in 1951.

Nora enjoyed life to the fullest and always lit up any room she was in.

t’s the morning of Thursday, May 30, and it already feels like it’s 100 degrees at 9 a.m.

On the baseball field at Lake Minneola High School, the ragtag group of coaches and collegiate players on the Winter Garden Squeeze are drenched with sweat as they go through their practice routine.

Despite the sun and the Florida heat, there’s fewer places they’d rather be, though the warmth is one that takes getting used to — especially for those players from up north.

A new era in Ocoee girls basketball is dawning, as former West Orange High assistant Lauren Ashley looks to move the program in the right direction.

It was announced on Tuesday, May 28, that Ashley would be taking over after the departure of coach Gina Solano.

And while she has only officially been the head coach for a little more than one week, the interest that she has seen in the program has blown up.

“Well, I’m very excited about the position — I feel like Ocoee has a lot of potential,” Ashley said. “There are a lot of girls that didn’t play for the last couple of years who you see around campus — they decided to not play for the season or take a

year off.

“When I reached out to a few girls and let them know, ‘Hey, I’m going to be the coach at Ocoee,’ I got some really good feedback,” she said. “That was the most exciting

thing, it’s like, ‘OK, I have some girls who are interested and excited about it.’”

The process of landing the gig was a quick one for Ashley, who did the interview with athletic direc-

tor Bill Alderman a few weeks back, before being offered the job just at the start of Memorial Day Weekend.

Jackson Simmes Jackson Simmes has only been fencing at the Winter Garden Fencing Academy for a few years, but he is already beating kids three years older than him in tournaments up and down the eastern seaboard. When he’s not fencing, Simmes loves checking out new places to try out his favorite food: burgers.

When did you first get into fencing?

I was 6, just about to turn 7, and we were walking by — after we finished dinner — and then we saw this place (Winter Garden Fencing Academy) and I said, “Can I try that?”

You’ve been doing fencing for a little while now, so what’s been your favorite thing about your sport?

Going to tournament. And some times when we got to tournaments — like if we’re out in North Carolina or Georgia — we sometimes explore colleges.

Is there a highlight moment for you when it comes to fencing?

My second time going to North Carolina — there were a bunch of kids and I did a U12 event, and I thought I did really well because I’m only 9 and I got sixth place in the 12-year-old division.

What’s it like fencing older kids?

Mia and Sam are the bigger people here, and I definitely see a difference between them and the younger kids that are in the classes — they’re (tougher).

What is the hardest thing about fencing?

Learning new stuff and having to practice. New types of parries, new types of footwork and everything.

Going to Georgia for vacation with my family and hanging out there. And lots of boating, and we will try to fix our Jet Ski — it’s been sitting in our garage for I don’t know even know how many years. (Also) playing basketball and baseball, and going to watch my dad play softball and baseball.

When you grow up, what do you want to be?

I’ll probably try to go to the Olympics for fencing, and then play basketball in the NBA.

What would you say have been the best words of advice you’ve gotten regarding fencing?

Get down low if you’re fencing your-sized people.

Going into his first season with the Squeeze, Abbott brings in decades of experience at all levels of the game, which really began when he was a player at Jacksonville State University in Alabama.

There, the Anniston, Alabama native played four years under his uncle Rudy Abbott — a member of the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and the namesake of Jacksonville State’s baseball field.

Rudy also happens to be the man who talked Terry into taking up coaching after a short stint playing for the Atlanta Braves and a couple of minor league teams.

Despite having solid pitching stats for those teams, Terry’s uncle contacted him one day — offering him up another suggestion.

“He looked me dead in the eye, and he said, ‘I ain’t your uncle right now,’ and I said, ‘Well who the hell are ya then?,’” Terry said. “He said, ‘Listen, there is no doubt I know you can pitch Double-A and I know you can probably pitch Triple-A — you

might even get a call from the big leagues — but I don’t want you to wake up one day and you’re 29 years old and you haven’t finished your degree, you haven’t gotten your master’s and you don’t have a career.”

It was up to Terry then to decide whether or not he wanted to keep up playing baseball or going to coach with his uncle at Jacksonville State.

In 1981, Terry decided to swallow his pride and take his uncle up on the offer, and it was there — as a grad assistant with that Gamecocks team — that he learned the ins and outs of coaching.

He learned how to recruit, evaluate and develop the players and run a program the right way. His stint would keep him in Alabama for another two years, before he made his first trek to Central Florida where he took over as head coach at Boone High School.

The work he put in at Boone didn’t go unnoticed, as after five years with the Braves, Terrymoved up to pro ball when he became the pitching coach with the Augusta Pirates (a former affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates) in 1989. Over the next 20-odd years, Terry would go on to be the pitching coach — and eventual scouting supervisor — through

Ashley ready to go While she knows that she has a big job ahead of her — the Knights have gone 13-35 over the past two seasons — there is little doubt in Ashley’s mind that she can help turn the program around. It’s something she has done throughout her basketball career.

Since her first introduction to basketball back in middle school in Miami, there’s always been an uphill battle to change a program — which includes when she was at Miramar High School.

“The way basketball is now, it wasn’t that way when I played,” Ashley said. “When I went to high school, they weren’t that great and I just had a different mentality. So I came in and I was very strong minded and determined to turn the program around and it was very rough at first.”

That would just be the first instance of Ashley helping to change the culture of a program, and it was most certainly not the last.

What followed was a playing stint at Florida Memorial University — Ashley followed her high-school coach who took over — where, once again, she

was a part of a total overhaul.

Beforehand the team wasn’t that good, but after Ashley showed up the Lions would go on to win two conference titles.

It was also during that time that her coach took her aside and asked her about coaching — noticing that she had a knack for helping out young players one day at a basketball camp the team put on.

“As soon as I graduated I jumped on the program at Miramar and I did a brief stint at Florida Memorial as well, and it just kind of blossomed from there,” Ashley said. “I knew that coaching was my thing and I’ve been at it the last five or six years.”

Looking to continue her coaching, Ashley landed at West Orange High, where she spent the last three seasons working under then-head coach Shrell Chamberlain.

With Chamberlain being just as much of a mentor to her as he was a head coach to his players, Ashley said that there’s a lot to take from her time at West Orange that could be put to use at Ocoee.

Though there will be some differences, Ashley noted that much

multiple levels of the Cincinnati Reds’ farm system.

Now all of that experience from his time in pro ball is being funneled into his new team, which at this point of his career was inspired by something that his uncle told him all of those years ago: Give back to the game.

“I’ve been fortunate to be at the right place at the right time, doing the right things, and things just fell in place for me,” Terry said. “But right now I’m trying to give back to the kids, and I’m trying to give back to baseball — trying to help them along the way.”

Terry is sure to have a lot to give back as he helps a team filled with talented players — like Dalton Shuffield (Texas State), Cale Jones (Santa Fe College) and Justin Holmes (Seminole State) — find their way through the sport.

While he may be a bit older than his players, at one point he was in their shoes, and he knows the passion that they play with.

“I have always had a respect for the game — I love the game and I look forward to going to the park and that’s what keeps bringing me back,” Terry said. “When the day comes when I don’t love the game, I don’t respect the game and I hate going to the park — it’s time for me to go sit on the front porch.”

like Chamberlain’s situation — in which he inherited a Warriors’ program that was coming off of a cancelled season — she, too, would be taking on a rebuilding process.

“With West Orange we had a lot of success, but there were things that we had to battle with as far as consistency goes, because at one point we were convinced we could beat anybody,” Ashley said.

“So our struggle was to be consistent in practice and be consistent on game day.

“With girls they have different personalities and moods, so coming from West Orange to Ocoee, where West Orange has this winning tradition and Ocoee has a bit of a culture change right now, it’s like, ‘What steps do we take? What steps would Shrell take to bring this group of girls together?,’” she said.

There are challenges ahead for Ashley, but if you ask her, none of them are deterrents.

“I’m actually pretty excited about the girls, because when they came out … there was just like a renewed energy in the gym,” Ashley said. “They were ready, they were hungry and I was very excited about that.”

fter falling in the season opener to the Leesburg Lightning on Saturday, June 1, Winter Garden came back with a vengeance as the Squeeze pulled off the high-scoring 11-10 win over the Lightning in their home opener at Lake Minneola High on Sunday, June 2.

Following a four-run inning by the Lightning (1-1) to start the first inning, the Squeeze (1-1) would answer right back thanks to a grand slam from Edgar Cruz. Cruz finished his night one-for-two with a grand slam and six RBI. What followed was a crazy game that saw a combined scoring of 21 runs on 15 hits — seven of which were for extra bases — before pitcher Gerald Kelly managed to seal the win after inducing a ground out.

FROM THE WINTER GARDEN HERITAGE FOUNDATION

JUNE 8, 1989 John Maloney, former sports editor for The West Orange Times, wrote a weekly column called Maloney’s Baloney, and he talked about anything and everything that was on his mind. He also was known to take readers on the Bus o’ Fun to various locations around West Orange County and Central Florida.

He sold tickets for trips to places such as Boardwalk and Baseball to watch farm teams play at Baseball City Stadium. Prices sometimes included an official Maloney’s Baloney Bus o’ Fun T-shirt and refreshments.

Lucille Woods has completed 30 years of service to Florida Telephone Corporation. She received a plaque from Ruby Maloy, chief operator at the Winter Garden office.

FROM THE ARCHIVES It’s graduation time! Jerry Daughtry, Lakeview High School Class of 1965, receives his diploma from Principal Robert Moore in this photograph by Winter Garden photographer B.P. Hannon.

Daughtry was honored in the yearbook as Most Athletic by his fellow classmates. He was appointed head football coach at Ocoee High School in 1973 and dean of students at West Orange High School in 1979.

The Winter Garden Heritage Foundation houses an extensive collection of photographs by Hannon, as well as thousands of items relating to West Orange County schools.

The mission of the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is to preserve the heritage and architecture of Winter Garden while creating new cultural experiences. The Foundation also preserves the material culture of West Orange County, using it to educate the area’s youth on the community’s rich history.

Former D-Day fighter Edwin Pounds, of Ocoee, is returning to Normandy after 50 years. By the time he flew two missions over the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944,

Dora Jackson was honored with a reception at Winter Garden Elementary School, where she is leaving after 24 years as secretary. She and her mother, Daisy Ray, and son, Donnie Jackson, all attended this school, and her granddaughter, Julie, is now a fourth-generation student there.

The Orange County School Board awarded a $43.83 million contract for the construction of a new high school to serve West Orange. It will replace the 10th through 12th grades at Lakeview and Ocoee high schools.

Readers wrote letters to the editor suggesting names for the new high school. Among them: West Orange High, TriCity High and Oakview (“oak” from Ocoee and “view” from Lakeview).
