Plant Street Market in Winter Garden and Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home both hosted ceremonies to honor those who died fighting for the United States.

At Plant Street Market, attendees enjoyed the presentation of colors by the Dr. Phillips High School Air Force JROTC and speakers from the Winter Garden VFW Post 4305. The downtown Winter Garden market is still collecting food and toiletry donations for U.S troops until the end of June.

At Woodlawn Memorial, guest speakers included former Orlando Police Chief Val Demings, U.S. Army Maj. John M. Williams II and U.S. Marine Sgt. Stephen Tovet.

“Yesterday I was given the privilege of shadowing Mayor Gary Bruhn along with three other students. We went to the MetroPlan meeting, the Florida League of Mayors Conference and the Law Enforcement Memorial. We also had to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with Rocco’s Tacos. I met the mayors, commissioners, judges, deputies and other elected officials who work to make Florida a great place to live.

Thank you so much, Mayor Bruhn, for an awesome experience!

West Orange students spend a day with Mayor Gary Bruhn

AMY COOK, Olympia High School My day with Mayor Gary Bruhn was wonderful. We started off around 8:30 a.m. and headed to the MetroPlan meeting. I learned a little about how elected officials work together to improve transportation around Central Florida.

After we left the meeting, we headed back toward Windermere and received a tour of Mayor Bruhn’s favorite sites. Even though I was born in Windermere, I still saw some beautiful sites that I hadn’t before. We celebrated Cinco de Mayo with a delightful meal at Rocco’s Tacos before heading to the Hyatt Regency.

The Florida League of Mayors Conference was very exciting. A brilliant economist gave a presentation on the effects of the growing population on the economy of Florida. I had no idea how fast Florida’s population is growing!

After the meeting, we headed to the Law Enforcement Memorial.

The service was truly beautiful.

My eyes filled with tears as the deputies sang and family members spoke of officers lost in the line of duty. My appreciation for the law-enforcement officers who work to protect my loved ones and I grew even more after the memorial.

We headed back to Windermere Town Hall around 9 p.m. It was definitely a full day! I am so thankful that the mayor thought of this idea and that my teachers selected me for it to represent Olympia. I learned a lot about the hard work that elected officials do to better the state of Florida and make it a great place to live.

Thank you so much, Mayor Bruhn. I will always remember this experience!

I

decided to try to do something new this year to engage middle- and high-school students to learn about their government. I offered one student from Gotha and Chain of Lakes middle schools and one student from Olympia and West Orange high schools to “Spend a Day with the Mayor.”

However, how to approach this was no easy task. So I reached out to Orange County School Board member Pamela Gould to assist. The guidelines were simple: Each school would decide how to choose the student.

And Pam came through. Each school decided how to select the student. The selection processes varied from choosing the class president to a student having to campaign and win an election. This year’s representatives included Arianna Chunoo (Gotha Middle), Samuel Miller (Chain of Lakes Middle), Haley Brockway (West Orange High) and Amy Cook (Olympia High).

And after the litany of paperwork, approvals, legal documents and even my driver’s license and proof of insurance, we were ready to go. Make no mistake: I was glad to submit to the scrutiny. If I were a parent, I would want those same assurances before letting my child spend 12 hours with someone I did not know.

We started our day at 8:30 a.m. at Windermere Town Hall, and then we traveled to downtown Orlando. We attended the Municipal Advisory Committee meeting for MetroPlan Orlando — the road, bike path, pedestrian and traffic planning organization for Orange, Osceola, and Seminoles counties. We then headed to International Drive for lunch before proceeding to the Florida League of Mayors Conference at the Hyatt Regency. There, they met many of the mayors from across the state and heard from experts regarding the state of our economy at the “Mayors Mean Business” Summit.

downtown to the Orange County Courthouse to attend the 34th Annual Law Enforcement Memorial honoring law-enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Orange County. There they met judges, county commissioners, city commissioners and city council members, Sheriff Jerry Demings, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs and many police chiefs. It was a solemn event as the police motorcycles led us, followed by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office bagpipes and drums in a processional arriving at the front steps of the courthouse.

We listened to each lawenforcement officer’s name who had been killed in the line of duty be called out and honored.

A sister of an Orange County deputy who had been killed in the line of duty provided the keynote address, and I know her story touched everyone. This is a tough event.

It was well after 9 p.m. when we returned to Town Hall — almost 13 hours since they met me that morning. I applaud the students for spending a very long day with me.

As populations in Horizon West continue to grow, Orange County Traffic & Transportation continues trying to meet infrastructure needs, especially for roads. From practically the genesis of Horizon West in the 1990s, it has required new and expanded roadways to make way for one of the biggest development booms in the nation.

Officials have been forming studies and designs for adding lanes, realigning road segments, inserting signals and improving intersections. With the work, they hope to include trails, landscaping, safety enhancements, better drainage and lighting.

For Reams Road, engineers have focused on a roughly onethird-mile segment from Delmar Avenue to Taborfield Avenue, a project of about three miles from Taborfield Avenue to Summerlake Park Boulevard, Segment H-2 — which includes the westernmost 1,000 feet of Reams Road near its intersection with Seidel Road – and a traffic signal at the Walt Disney World North Service Access (Center Drive).

Funding includes monies from the INVEST project, impacat fees and gas tax. Dates are subject to change.

Dr. Phillips High School began the week with its commencement May 24 at Amway Arena. Foundation Academy followed with its ceremony May 26 at the South Campus.

Then, both Windermere Preparatory School and Olympia High School honored their seniors May 27 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts and the CFE Arena on the University of Central Florida campus, respectively.

Six years ago, Vogl was enrolled in photography school with a desire to break into the fashion-photography industry. However, she had just converted to Islam and began to see it as a sort of roadblock on her journey to the world of fashion photography.

“I felt like I wasn’t fulfilling my moral obligations to promote modesty, and that’s when I discovered the world of modest fashion, which I didn’t even know existed,” she said.

She started working with prominent fashion bloggers, as well as with Islamic clothing brands, getting to know the business. It was then that she and her business partner, Nadine Abu-Jubara, decided to open the online Verona Collection — named for one of the fashion capitals of the world — in February 2015. The pair, along with friend Alaa Ammuss, design the clothes and athletic wear.

Business took off faster than the pair had expected. They were shipping worldwide, and demand from European customers in particular grew so much that they opened a European division.

After seeing Verona’s online success, the pair decided it was time to branch out and open the Fashion Square location.

estly is more of a feminist movement.

“When you see anything in the media about women, they’re objectified and used to sell products, and to me that’s oppression,” she said. “This is liberating, and I feel like it’s allowing me to choose what I want people to see.”

Some stereotypes peg Muslim women as oppressed, and these misconceptions of women’s rights and roles are exactly what Vogl hopes to debunk.

“When people start to see we’re just like everybody else, it begins to combat that,” she said. “We’re sitting here promoting (modesty) ourselves; we’re independent women; we’re clearly not oppressed.”

GROWING INDUSTRY

Vogl isn’t the only one taking an interest in the trend of modest clothing and Islamic-inspired fashion. According to Forbes, in a study co-commissioned by Reuters, Muslims spent $266 billion on clothing in 2013. That number is projected to double by 2019. Additionally, Fortune called Muslim women the “next big untapped fashion market.”

Vogl already is planning for expansion. She hopes to open another Verona retail location in London or Paris next, and customers have requested more locations in other parts of the country.

But for Vogl, one of the most rewarding parts of owning and running Verona is seeing the confidence grow in women who choose to wear the hijab.

“People think we don’t want to (wear the hijab), but we do,” she said. “Giving people the confidence to wear a hijab and not care what people think of them — that’s rewarding.”

I’m 30 weeks pregnant, and I had my 21-month-old nephew with me. We went into Chipotle (at Winter Garden Village) to grab lunch. I was holding him (he was hungry and cranky) and was wondering how I was going to hold him and carry our tray of food. The sweet lady behind me tapped me on my shoulder and said, “Miss, you look like you have your hands full. Can I help you?” I said, “Sure!” She then carried our food to our table while I got drinks and even helped me to get a high chair. If you are part of this group and reading this, thank you! Lineberger, a fellow photographer, loved to photograph trees and thought the wood prints would be a great way to display his art.

“I thought the neatest thing would be to have something of nature on wood — like wood on wood,” Lineberger said.

Eventually, he tracked down the company who could do it for him — Mill Wood Art based in Raleigh, North Carolina — and it began a new form of art for Lineberger, who already had a long career in media.

BEGINNINGS

As soon as he could get his hands on a Kodak Brownie camera, Lineberger chased his parents around their Montverde home trying to take photos. At 8, he started experimenting with 8 mm movies.

In those days, he had no idea that the time he had left with his parents was so short. When he was 11, his mother died of cancer.

It was unexpected — Lineberger didn’t know she was as sick as she was. Then just two years later, his father died suddenly of a heart attack.

He was sent to South Carolina to live with his older sister’s family. It was in the days before Walt Disney World, and his home in Montverde was quiet. He didn’t want to leave, but once he arrived in South Carolina, he felt the world was opened to him.

He had just seen behind-thescenes videos for the newly released “Star Wars.” His high school in South Carolina was five times larger than it would have been in Montverde. A guidance counselor saw potential and invested time in him. He attended a summer broadcasting program at the University of North Carolina.

created a successful media career, including producing “Storm Clouds,” a made-for-TV movie.

REDISCOVERING A PASSION

Recently, he has rediscovered his passion for photography.

About four years ago, his wife died. Soon after, his brother, whom he had not seen for a long time, invited Lineberger to come take photos of waterfalls with him.

Then, he discovered the wood prints and put a photo on wood.

The experience launched him back into the world of photography, and upon his return to Central Florida, to help care for his grandmother who lives in Oakland, he began to work with wood prints.

One photo depicts cars rushing by the majestic oaks of the town.

He takes many photos of trees and local scenes and prints them on wood. Lineberger still works with video and video editing, as well as in the real-estate photography business. But his woodprint photographs have become a new passion, as well as his work taking photographs for the town of Oakland.

Top finishers included Michael Gusewelle, second-place men’s finisher; Mark Rhode, third-place men’s; Morgan Earp, first-place men’s; Sarah Grathwohl, first-place women’s; Brianna Syzman, second-place women’s; Victoria Grieder, third-place women’s; and Michelle Hamil, first-place girl 12 and under.

The second Warrior Band 5K Dash, which raised money for the West Orange High marching band, was held on the school’s campus. Following the race, runners could enjoy snacks and confetti was showered on the top finishers.

habad of South Orlando helped the community celebrate Lag Ba’Omer — a festive day on the Jewish calendar, celebrating the anniversary of the passing of the great sage and mystic Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai — with an evening filled with family fun Thursday, May 26, at the Camp Gan Israel site in Gotha.

Families and the Jewish community celebrated by enjoying a barbecue dinner and festive music, and the kids got to play on an inflatable slide, along with archery and other games set up at the site.

Rani Segev had a blast taking her son, Daniel, down the slide.

45-14 loss for the Olympia Titans and a 38-28 win for the West Orange Warriors brought the spring season of high-school football to a close in West and Southwest Orange County.

Despite the seemingly disparate results, both coach Kyle Hayes’ Titans and coach Bob Head’s Warriors completed the season with several encouraging signs that each team will be a force this fall.

OPTIMISM AT OLYMPIA

The Olympia Titans defense forced three turnovers — all by

fumble — and rising junior quarterback Joe Milton ran for one touchdown and threw for another to help offset the disappointment of the team’s 45-14 defeat against Wekiva.

The final score included 14 points for Wekiva that were scored during the fourth quarter, during which the two teams utilized their junior-varsity players.

The unofficial final score for the varsity teams was 31-14 in favor of the Mustangs through three quarters.

For a team that struggled on offense at times in 2015, the strong play of Milton was an encouraging sign — especially considering

The Windermere Prep Athletics Department announced May 5 that Kari Soehren has joined the school’s staff as the head coach for its cheerleading program.

Soehren is a 2014 UCF alumna who has experience as a professional dancer for the Orlando Magic (2009-2010), a cheerleader for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012-2014) and has even performed with musician Bruno Mars on “The Today Show.”

Soehren previously has coached varsity cheerleading at Ocoee High School and also continues to collaborate with the Buccaneers.

When did you start playing football?

When I was 7 years old, I played Pop Warner; I did that for about a year. I also played a lot of flag football with my friends. Then I came out in fifth grade for Windermere Prep to play football. I just immediately loved tackle football, especially here, because this is my 15th year at Windermere Prep — I’ve been here longer than anyone else.

Will you play in college?

Yeah, definitely. I’m in that process right now, definitely going to a few camps this summer, like South Florida Select and some individual college camps, as well. Throughout the entire summer, I’ll be flying up and down, kind of all around, going through that. It’s a fun process.

What schools are you looking at?

Hillsdale, Lehigh, Colgate — those are the ones that I’m leaning toward, looking at, interested in and learning about to go and do more

Milton is only a rising junior and still has plenty of time for improvement.

“He’s a 2018 kid, and he’s 6-foot-5, so people think he’s older,” coach Kyle Hayes said.

“He’s still got to learn to make some throws that he ended up making through athleticism and not through scheme.”

Wekiva led 14-7 after a wild first half in which the Titans forced and recovered three fumbles — with Andrew Wilkins, Ronald Teague and Malachi Moore each getting his hands on a loose ball for Olympia.

Milton keyed a drive early in the second quarter that ended with him diving into the endzone, tying the game at 7-7.

After the Titans originally went with backup quarterback Jake Clarkson for the first three drives of the second half, Milton returned to the field for the fourth drive and connected on three consecutive passes — the third of which was a 60-yard touchdown strike to Derrick Bell.

There is also another reason for Titans fans not to look too much into the final score.

Olympia was without nine transfers held out as ineligible, per FHSAA guidelines for spring football. Hayes said all nine players should compete for starting jobs in the fall, meaning the on-field product for the Titans could have a different look once the first game whistle blows in August.

I love being up north, definitely near snow, and I don’t want to be as far away as I am now from skiing, because I love skiing a lot. I just wanted to be near snow, where it was colder, instead of being in 90 degrees every day.

How did you get interested in skiing?

Just from a very young age, my family and I would always go to Colorado — Bachelor Gulch — to ski a lot every year. I just loved it because I was good at it, just a strong skier, and with an individual coach just got better and better. I mean, if I was up north right now, I’d probably be on a ski team or something, because that’s how much I love skiing. I wanted to be around it in college.

What is your favorite class?

Probably sports medicine, because it kind of gives you a point of view from being the athlete to knowing almost what your injury is if you get hurt or if you have a friend that gets hurt. You have an understanding of what’s going on, and you learn how to tape and deal with those injuries on and off the field.

Just a great teacher, as well.

end of the third quarter. After that, both teams took their starters out of the game in favor of reserves and junior-varsity athletes.

That the Warriors led 35-14 through three quarters of varsity play against Gainesville — a 2015 playoff team in Class 6A and a regional finalist, at that — bodes well for an effort that is not your average rebuild.

“We’re basically rebuilding, but the expectation at West Orange is to reload,” head coach Bob Head said. “Overall, we had a great spring.”

And even after throwing for five touchdowns in the Warriors’ 38-28 spring game victory over Gainesville May 27, the rising senior transfer wasn’t ready to single one adjustment out as harder than the other.

“It’s both,” Burton said with a laugh. “The heat is tough — you go from 40 (degrees) to 95. That and the speed: These guys can fly.”

Burton’s strong performance was one of several highlights for West Orange in the annual spring contest. The ability of receivers such as NaQuan Renalds and Kyveon Jones, who each had a pair of touchdown receptions, to rack up yards after the catch was another.

“We’ve got a lot of guys — a lot of guys (who) have played and a lot of guys (who) are fast,”coach Bob Head said. “We’ve just got to get the ball in their hands in space.”

Tapped as the successor to newly graduated Woody Barrett, Burton’s acclimation to the program is just one of several storylines surrounding the program that are largely centered on how the Warriors will replace a large and prominent senior class from the 2015 season.

In addition to Burton, there is a new offensive coordinator — Vernon Mitchell — as well as several players such as rising senior wide receiver Kyveon Jones, who are not new to the program but are being asked to step in as the next man up.

Fortunately, if Friday’s spring game is any indicator, that process of bringing along the new faces in new places is off to a smooth enough start. After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, the Warriors scored 35 unanswered points through the

local first. And after a rough go of it in 2015, it may just provide the right dynamic for victory in 2016.

Turn the page and glance at the player bios for this year’s team. If you’re familiar with high-school baseball in Central Florida, many of the names and faces will sound familiar — actually, nearly all of them.

According to General Manager Adam Bates, just one of the team’s 28 players had need of a host family — the rest all have direct ties to Central Florida and a place to stay.

It’s not only a positive for the players, who will get to sleep in their own beds, either.

The local presence on the roster makes the Squeeze a much easier sell to boost attendance.

Local players are bound to have built-in networks of families and friends who will be able to attend games. Furthermore, for the elusive casual fan, it’s an easier sell to go to the ballpark to support local kids than it is to support kids from, say, Texas.

Postseason play for area Little Leaguers begins this week.

Things are set to heat up on Little League diamonds around West Orange as the regular season for Little League Baseball has ended locally and postseason play is on deck.

Florida District 14, which includes Winter Garden Little League, Ocoee Little League, Windermere Little League, Dr. Phillips Little League and South

Lake Little League, begins its postseason slate this weekend with its annual Top Team District 14 tournaments.

The Top Team events pit regular-season champions from the respective leagues against one another in a one-pool format. Because Windermere Little League is a dual-chartered league, a total of six teams will participate in each tournament.

host both the Minors (9- and 10-year-olds) and Seniors (15and 16-year-olds) tournaments, while Ocoee Little League will host the Majors (11- and 12-yearolds) and Juniors (13- and 14-year-olds) tournaments.

Play began June 1 and is scheduled to culminate with championships at the respective sites June 7.

Of course, however the District 14 Top Team tournaments end, they represent just the beginning of a month full of baseball. District 14’s International Tournaments, affectionately referred to as “AllStars,” begin soon thereafter and are preceded by the Tournament of Champions for ballplayers age 9 and younger.

The District 14 International Little League Tournament begins the path a team may travel to reach the Little League World Series and will start June 30 at Winter Garden Little League.

The athletic department at Windermere Prep announced Tuesday morning the hiring of veteran coach Keith Walsh for the Lakers baseball program.

Walsh will replace outgoing coach Scott Horvath, who is pursuing opportunities outside of baseball.

Walsh has 10 years of experience as a head coach with Edgewater High in Orlando and Umatilla High. Windermere Prep’s new baseball coach is a graduate of Lake Brantley High who played college baseball at North Carolina State and UCF. During his time at Edgewater, the Eagles earned two district titles, two playoff appearances and their first final four berth. He has also coached several teams for the Orlando Scorpions travel baseball program.

In a statement, the athletics department said that Walsh, his wife Maggie and three boys are excited to become a part of the Lakers’ community.

Horvath, an alumnus of West Orange High, served as the head coach for Windermere Prep’s baseball program the past three seasons. During that time, the Lakers had one district championship and one playoff appearance.

The Rotary Club of Dr. Phillips, in partnership with Dr. Phillips High School, awarded the Rotary Youth Leadership students.

Past Dr. Phillips High School Principal Bill Spoone welcomed the following students to be recognized at a recent Rotary meeting: Angelina Gamba, Leila Hafizbegovic, Alex Joseph, Luke Laaker and Viviana Uribe.

The students gave a short presentation on how a Rotary camp in April helped them to develop qualities in self-confidence, leadership and citizenship.

ROBINSWOOD GARDEN CLUB

Robinswood Garden Club ended a successful 2016 club year with a banquet May 3 at Olive Garden. Those enjoying the evening were Bill Lentz, Dan and Victoria Loney, Dee Stack, Cookie Coykendall and Carolyn Kennedy.

President Wilma Lentz gave each member a vase with a big peach rose and baby’s breath for club work. A plant was presented to Betsy Talpalar, who recently retired from teaching school.

Sara Nicholson gave all a summer fun bag of goodies, including a package of seeds. Victoria Loney passed around a sheet for members to sign up for programs and hostessing the coming club year.

The club will start up again Sept. 6 for the 2016-17 year at the Pine Hills Community Center.

He is a sweet, mellow boy and he loves to eat treats. Chipotle even knows how to sit in exchange for a treat. He walks well on a leash, and loves to receive attention. Chipotle does enjoy running around and playing fetch, but he is mostly a calm dog who loves to be petted.

The adoption fee for dogs is $55, which includes sterilization, vaccination and a microchip.

Woman’s Club of Ocoee members Pauline Mathius, Gail Daniels and Diane Bonanno helped serve at the group’s Creative Expressions Celebration Luncheon. The event was held May 12 at the clubhouse in Ocoee.

Six Ocoee elementary schools participated: Citrus, Ocoee, Prairie Lake, Spring Lake, Thornebrooke and Westbrooke elementaries. The event is held each year to recognize fifth-graders’ creative response to a question posed by the Woman’s Club.

This year’s question: “What would I do if elected president of the United States?”

Each school selected four students, and they could respond with an essay, poem, song or artwork.

Each student was presented with a certificate and a blue ribbon, presented by Woman’s Club education chairs Lillian Lasseter and Jackie Titus. Each school was given a check for $500, presented

by Woman’s Club President Lynne Seigler, and a case of school supplies donated by club members.

SENIOR OF THE MONTH

GLENNA COX

Glenna was born Jan. 2, 1931, in Ashe County, North Carolina. She was the first child of Winnie and Archie Barton.

Her mom and dad were farmers until 1941, when Glenna was 10 and the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio.

Her dad then went to work as a plant supervisor, and her mom worked for Fisher Body.

Their family included three younger brothers and one sister.

Glenna’s first job after graduating high school was working at Eaton Axle, where she made decorations for grills for 1951 Ford cars.

Next, she worked for Murray Bicycle Company, where she met and later married her husband Charley Cox, who was her inspector at the bicycle company.

Their family grew with the addition of four children, Patrick, Debbie, Anthony and Michael. In 1959, they moved to Daytona Beach, where Glenna went to work for General Electric in the space program. When the space program closed in Daytona, she commuted to Plymouth and worked for General Electric’s light bulb and Christmas light division.

In 1970, they moved to Apopka, where she continued to work until they closed. In 1975, she moved to Ocoee. Glenna was one of the first people to go to work in Plymouth and was one of the last 10 to leave when the plant closed. She then went to work for Walmart in the cash office and retired in 2006. In her younger days, she enjoyed playing softball, golf, bowling and parasailing.

Glenna’s extended family includes five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and three great-greatgranddaughters. She always plays bingo and enjoys luncheons at West Orange Seniors.

Bright Future sees decade of growth Bright Future Electric is celebrating its 10-year anniversary this year. The company was founded in 2006 by Danniel J. Petro, a longtime resident and successful businessman in West Orange County.

Bright Future started with a handful of employees, some residential projects and one location in Winter Garden. It grew into a fullservice, multi-location electrical contractor specializing in residential, service and commercial construction.

Toll Brothers recently broke ground on the residents’ clubhouse at Royal Cypress Preserve, a 206home gated community in Southwest Orange County.

The 4,300-square-foot clubhouse, which is set for completion this fall, will include a resort-style, zeroentry swimming pool, fitness center, open-air pavilion with outdoor kitchen and lounge seating, and social room with catering kitchen.

Royal Cypress Preserve offers five home designs from the mid-$400,000s. Floor plans range from 2,222 to more than 4,100 square feet.

Disappearing act Knowles, a photographer and videographer who works mainly in the local travel industry, watched as Orange County introduced the large, 96-gallon cans to homeowners in January. Walking around local neighborhoods, he saw that with the new cans came sizable storage issues.

“These are much bigger than the cans they used to have, and Orange County has now gone on to collecting one day a week, whereas it used to be two days a week, and that’s why they increased the size of the cans, to compensate for the loss of pickups,” Knowles said.

He saw cans sitting on the sides of houses, in front of the garage and places other than inside the garage. Because the cans are bigger and sit in homeowners’ garages for a longer period of time before collection, he reasons that people may not necessarily want to store them in the garage for the sake of saving space. However, those who want to save space may be sacrificing aesthetics.

Knowles already takes photographs of local aesthetically pleasing landscapes, so he put his creative side to the test and developed a new solution that camouflages the cans — the CanSkirt.

While the new cans were introduced in January, he was working on CanSkirt by February. In April,

the prototypes came to life.

Rather than build a fence or grow shrubs to shield the cans, Knowles said that this is a less expensive, instant solution.

“CanSkirt is a visually appealing, cost-effective alternative for storing garbage cans outside the home,” Knowles said. “Property managers, architectural review boards and HOAs have been searching for a neighbor-friendly solution.”

The CanSkirt is made of 12-ounce waterproof vinyl and has six eyelets that allow bungee cords to pass through and hold the skirt in place. Customers can choose a skirt that wraps around either a single can or two cans and also can choose any of seven patterns or landscape designs: stone wall, brick wall bush, stone wall hedge, white fence, viburnum bush, podocarpus hedge and pink azalea.

Using the bungee cords that come with each skirt, customers can hook the skirt through the eyelets onto the top knobs of the trash can. They also can choose to go for a fixed-storage option, which uses a wood board with hooks that attaches to the side of a house and holds both the cans and skirts in place. Knowles can assist with the installation of the fixed-storage option.

Knowles currently is connecting with homeowners associations and neighborhood-management companies to tell them about this new solution.

Additionally, homeowners associations that are interested in the skirts and want a uniform design that blends in with the neighborhood can also contact Knowles to discuss custom orders.

Since April, Knowles has been selling the skirts both online and at two local farmer’s markets — at Winter Garden on Saturdays and Lake Eola on Sundays. It has had substantial interest from the community, he said, and in June, he will add to the collection a line of lid covers for the cans, available in a green hedge pattern.

“The interest has been phenomenal; it’s magnificent,” he said. “I would say three-quarters of the people (I meet) comment on how good they look and what a great idea it is.”

nyone can be a decorator, but it takes someone with an eye for creativity to take a house and transform it into a home.

That is exactly what Winter Garden resident Anne Fanelli does as an interior designer.

Fanelli owns her own shop in downtown Winter Garden on Main Street, called Anne’s Art and Design, which focuses on the artistic interior and caters to customers looking to spruce up their living quarters and create a comfortable home atmosphere.

“Interior design is an art, and art is a key component of interior design,” Fanelli said.

Fanelli has been an interior

designer in Central Florida for 25 years and is licensed by the State Board of Architecture and Interior Design. She is a member of the American Society of Interior designers and a licensed realtor.

The seasoned interior designer has background in a multitude of industries that use interior design strategies, including hospitality, residential and commercial interior design with projects such as model homes, hotels, yachts, spas and restaurants.

“The love of art is what sparked my interest in interior design,” she said. “It was a good avenue to go into that ended up being a very lucrative career for me. Art plays a huge role in interior spaces — it sets the mood, the colors and the atmosphere.”

After working at Disney as an Imagineer and at Berkshire Hathaway, among others, Fanelli’s love for art and interior design in turn sparked her interest in opening her own shop. Customers can find a range of decorations and unique centerpieces. A large turquoise vase sits as a centerpiece on the front table, surrounded by kitchen utensils and dishes emblazoned with clever sayings, such as a fondue dish that says “Just in queso.” Along one wall is a collection of dish towels, also embroidered with witty phrases that make people laugh.

Clients who might not be as familiar with interior design are always encouraged to come to Fanelli for help. They describe their goals and vision, and Fanelli instructs them to begin by telling her things they are interested in and what they love.

“I listen to what’s important in my clients’ lives, and if there’s a particular piece of art or furniture they can’t part with, I will include those items in the space

and accentuate the things that will work in a space,” she said.

“If it’s a piece of art, I’ll build a room around it. I can (even) go from construction documents and houses that aren’t built yet and help design spaces that will fit the furniture, design-reflected ceiling plans (and more).”

Some suggestions Fanelli has for those looking to personalize their living spaces include choosing a color palette for the home that looks good on you, much like choosing clothes based on colors that work for you. And with this busy, fast-paced life Americans live, she encourages clients to make their home a relaxing space by bringing nature indoors.

In fact, some of the top design trends she has seen with clients currently includes minimalist themes and colors, natureinspired earth tones and pieces, rustic and country-chic, clean lines and simplistic designs. No matter the theme, though, Fanelli said the No. 1 thing that is most important in designing a home is creating something that is comfortable and relaxing.

“I love putting it all together and making people happy,” she said. “(The best part is) creating spaces that my clients love, feel comfortable in and are happy in.”
