Berwyn and Kathryn Oltman will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary June 3. They grew up on opposite ends of Nebraska and first met as children, when one of Kathryn’s sisters married and moved to the community where Berwyn’s family lived. They both are from families with eight children. They were students at McPherson College in Kansas the first year they were married. Berwyn is a retired Church of the Brethren minister and served churches in both Iowa and Florida. They moved to Ocoee nearly 30 years ago. They have three children: Stephen, Carolyn and Christopher; and a 4-year-old grandson, Ryder.

M
elvin Henry considers himself the right man for the position — commander of the West Orange VFW Post 4305 in Winter Garden. Members elected him last month, and his term begins next week. He has the military history, a willingness to work with others and the local connection, having grown up in Winter Garden and graduated from West Orange High School. “I want the best for the folks at large and to have this facility, this venue to be here for veterans for years to come,” Henry said. His first experience with the local VFW was 18 years ago, when he attended a Winter Garden Memorial Day service in which the West Orange post participated. He decided he wanted to be part of this organization and joined immediately. “Being a veteran of foreign wars, this is a unique group of veterans,” Henry said. “It’s the only group that you have to be in a hostile environment to join.” He served in both Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm in the 1990-91 Gulf War, which qualified him for membership.
“I found it more comfortable being in the VFW rather than other places because of our experiences,” he said. “We communicated a little better.” As commander, Henry’s goal is to continue the veterans services that the VFW offers and to continue participation in community programs such as ROTC at West Orange and Dr. Phillips high schools. But he also sees a need to bring more activities such as the RAFMAN Club Foundation program to veterans living in West Orange County. This gives veterans access to Department of Veterans Affairs representatives in a town-hall setting to discuss issues such as healthcare enrollment, claims assistance and benefits for family members. Another goal is to boost membership at the post. “We struggle with membership, and we ask that anyone who qualifies to consider joining VFW,” Henry said. The Winter Garden native graduated in June 1978 from West Orange High School and joined the U.S. Army the following month. He didn’t turn 18 until August, so his father had to give written permission.
Henry seemed destined to join the military. His father was in the Army, as were four uncles. “Most of the men went in the military, and most of the girls married into military,” he said. “My grandmother, at one time, had 11 grandchildren in the military.” Henry served three overseas tours of duty, including the Gulf War. He earned a number of decorations and awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters and Army Achievement Medal with five Oak Leaf Clusters. He was offered early retirement in 1994 after 16 years in the military and returned to West Orange County to join the ranks of civilian life. Henry and his wife, Patricia, live in Winter Garden, and they have three children.

Winter Garden soon will be getting 85,000 square feet of new commercial, office, retail and restaurant space. Land has been cleared for the Gardenia Plaza project — which will be known as West Market — at 1410 W. Colonial Drive. The nearly 18.25-acre property is located south of West Colonial Drive, west of South Park Avenue and north of Sand Lime Road. Orange County property records show that Gardenia Plaza LLC bought the property in May 2016 for $2.1 million. Orlando-based Epic Development Group, Winter Garden-based M. Maciel & Associates LLC and Orlando-based D&D Construction Services Inc. are preparing to break ground. The new plaza will have two large retail buildings on the south side of the property — one being about 25,000 square feet and the other 30,000 square feet. Gardenia Plaza LLC also has been approved to build four outparcel buildings along West Colonial Drive, totaling 27,600 square feet of restaurants and retail space. It also is set to include 472 parking spaces. Additionally, another lot at the northwest corner of the property has been earmarked by the site plan as future development. “The intent of the West Market design standards is to create and maintain a positive ambiance and identity by providing for architectural and site design treatments that will enhance and improve upon the typical appearance of a retail shopping center,” according to city documents. Although West Market will be a grocery-anchored shopping plaza, no grocer tenant has been announced. However, documents from commercial leasing agency BishopBeale show that McAlister’s Deli has signed on for one of the restaurant spaces. This will be the third McAlister’s location in the greater Orlando area, and it will be one of two drivethru restaurants on the property. The deli will be about 4,400 square feet. In addition to McAlister’s, site plans also indicated a Dairy Queen Grill & Chill and a Goodwill.

n Commissioners voted unanimously to approve the first reading of an ordinance that makes interim adjustments to the current fiscal year budget. A total of $3,982,174 will be appropriated toward various infrastructure and improvement projects and equipment. n City leaders approved two rezoning ordinances. The names of the 26 war dead from Winter Garden that are etched on the granite memorial were read, and representatives from American Legion Post 63, B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 2165, Winter Garden Masonic Lodge, Winter Garden Lions Club and VFW Post 4305 placed wreaths at the foot of the monument. The city of Ocoee remembered and honored those who fought and gave their lives for our nation’s freedom with a Memorial Day ceremony on Friday, May 25. Bollhoefer explained the five big ideas behind the plan. “One idea (of the plan) was to have one Winter Garden and not have a divided community,” he said. “A lot of times, people always felt like there was Winter Garden and east Winter Garden. The second big idea was (to) increase home ownership and housing options within the community. Another (idea) was to improve health, recreation, safety and security.” Bollhoefer added the other two ideas are to create new destinations within walking and biking distance of homes in the community and provide continued support for initiatives presently underway. Karl McKenzie, president of the East Winter Garden Community Development Corporation, attended the meeting to show support for the plan and read a let-
ter thanking city leaders for their decision to move forward with it. “The East Winter Garden Community Development Corporation is totally excited about tonight’s meeting to approve the proposed plan for east Winter Garden,” McKenzie said. “The development of this community has been the primary focus of the (East Winter Garden Community Development Corporation) for more than a decade.” City leaders also voted to purchase three lakefront parcels along Lake Apopka for $1.6 million. The three parcels are located at 628 N. Lakeview Ave., 712 N. Lakeview Ave. and 117 W. Division St. The parcels are adjacent to one another and lie between Newton Park and Bradford Park. Purchasing the three parcels creates an opportunity for the city to connect the two existing parks into a large lakefront park.

County leaders discuss update to short-term rental rules Orange County commissioners discussed whether or not to overhaul the current ordinance on short-term rentals in light of the growing popularity of Airbnb. GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR
As the popularity of Airbnb and similar sites continues to grow, Orange County commissioners examined how they should approach its increasing usage. Airbnb is a company that operates an online marketplace for people wanting to rent out their entire homes, spare rooms or guest beds. According to a basic search on its site, there are 306 total listings in Orange County. However, some listings may no longer be active. “With its increased popularity, we also have increasing concerns from the community,” said Jennifer Moreau, an assistant manager in the county’s zoning department. “You essentially have what is a commercial use in a residential neighborhood, which can cause additional issues, including parking, noise, garbage.” In a work session held during the May 22 Orange County Board of
Commissioners meeting, Moreau provided commissioners with a refresher on the county’s existing rules on short-term rentals. EXISTING RULES
As currently written, Orange County’s code on short-term rentals — some of which dates back to 1957 — only refers to traditional hotels, time-shares and motels, Moreau said. Short-term rentals are defined as 180 days or fewer and are strictly confined to commercial or industrially zoned areas. The code also contains language pertaining to B&Bs, homestays and inns, which are permitted by right or special exception in agricultural, residential multifamily and commercial areas. In addition, the county’s code permits transient rentals in a single-family home, so long as the home is located within an R-3 (multifamily) zoned area and the rental is fewer than 30 days.

However, even if one meets all the zoning requirements to host a short-term rental, one still needs to abide by any applicable HOA rules, and Airbnb is not permitted if your HOA has rules against it. And even if you’re in the clear, there are still some other legal requirements for hosting shortterm rentals. “Assuming you meet the zoning requirements and you meet any HOA requirements, there are also other requirements you would need to meet in order to be allowed by code,” Moreau said. “You would need to pull a business tax receipt, possibly obtain a use permit … meet state lodging regulations, pay your hotel/motel tax, and then address any building or fire code requirements.” PROS AND CONS
During her presentation, Moreau pointed out the pros and cons of Airbnb, as well as possible community concerns. “There are also public safety concerns with high turnover in neighborhoods, which can affect the character and stability of neighborhoods,” she said. “There’s also a potential lack of investment. Absentee landlords are generally presumed to be less diligent about routine maintenance than owneroccupied (homes). And there’s also the competition to traditional

hotels and bed-and-breakfasts.” Despite the potential disruption to the traditional hotel industry, Moreau added that Airbnb can help Orange County homeowners who may struggle to pay their mortgage. But she also highlighted the link between short-term rentals and affordable housing, explaining that residential properties purchased for later use as short-term rentals lead to housing shortages and thus exacerbate the county’s affordable-housing problem. “There’s actually two sides to this coin,” Moreau said. “On the one side, it can assist homeowners with offsetting homeownership costs, especially in regard to hosted rentals. … On the other side of that, you have investors (who) are specifically buying up residential properties with the intent of using them for commercial uses as short-term rentals. So decreasing the longterm housing stock can then contribute to an increase in housing and rental prices.” AIRBNB COMPLAINTS
The county decided to review its rules on short-term rentals after a couple requested the county to allow short-term hosted rentals in residential neighborhoods, Moreau added. The couple, which had been unaware of the existing shortterm rental rules, received an anonymous code enforcement complaint in December 2017. In the past two years, the county’s Code Enforcement Board has
received about 75 complaints regarding Airbnb use. This is out of the 26,000 total complaints the CEB received in 2017 alone, Moreau said. Following a lengthy discussion, county commissioners ultimately agreed via consensus to revisit the issue after observing how things play out in Orlando, which approved new rules in February allowing short-term rentals in all residential neighborhoods. Orlando’s new ordinance becomes effective July 1. “I think that I’d like to see some lessons learned with how it plays out in the city of Orlando,” said Betsy VanderLey, the Orange County District 1 Commissioner. “There are some items that … if we moved forward, I would want to require — some of the sexual predator language and some other things like that to protect guests. “We certainly don’t want to go on the map, nationally, for some kind of a debacle there,” she said. “But having said that, I do think that less regulation might be more in this particular case, because if we get too sophisticated and too tricky in our ordinance … we could tee law-abiding citizens up to be not law-abiding citizens because of the level of ordinance that they might have to comply with. You know, these folks are citizens, they don’t have compliance divisions to handle this.”

Leaders provide project updates at luncheon land cultural building known as the Oakland Arts and History Center, which will be built on the West Orange Trail.

During the West Orange Chamber of Commerce’s 2018 Mayoral Update Luncheon, local leaders informed attendees of the latest projects being pursued in their individual municipalities. The luncheon, held May 23 at Tanner Hall in Winter Garden, provided attendees the chance to learn more about long-term projects and ask questions about relevant issues and developments. Oakland Mayor Kathy Stark, Ocoee Mayor Rusty Johnson, Orange County Mayor Teresa Jacobs, Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn and Winter Garden Mayor John Rees each offered brief summaries on ongoing projects and future goals and later took questions from the audience members.

Johnson presented a video that showed a visual overview of the major projects being pursued as part of the city’s $45 million initiative to revitalize its downtown area. Johnson also shared the city has seen an influx of quality residential projects come in on the north side of the city that are either under construction or set to begin construction soon.

When asked to provide a short explanation of the most important projects going on in Oakland, Stark pointed to the town’s goal to replace its septic tanks with a new centralized sewer system that is expected to cost millions to fund and years to fully install. Stark also mentioned the town’s plan to update its architectural design guidelines and create a mobility master plan and transportation network to handle the growth the town anticipates the future may bring. “We are in the midst of a design guideline update, and we have placed a moratorium on any building until July at the earliest, so that we can update our design guidelines to make sure that we are continually growing in a way that really reflects the heritage and the traditions of our small town,” she said. Stark also emphasized an upcoming town project for an Oak-

Jacobs spoke about Provision Healthcare LLC, and its move to build a proton therapy center and several medical office buildings in the Hamlin community. Jacobs also highlighted a service being offered to Orange County residents in light of the endless gun violence plaguing the nation. “With all of the school shootings that we’ve seen and all the mass tragedies that we’ve seen — almost all of them taking place at the hands of a mentally ill or young people,” she said. “ We just intro-
duced in Orange County in the last year … Mobile Crisis Service. This is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to any parent, teacher, or law-enforcement (officer) and anyone in Orange County who comes into contact with a young person they think might be suicidal or dangerous.” WINTER GARDEN
Rees emphasized that Winter Garden’s priority is to ensure the city receives quality development. Rees also shared the news that Tucker Ranch, which is being converted into a 209-acre park and with an organic farm that will produce fruits and veggies for the Winter Garden Farmers Market, is set to open in the fall. The mayor also mentioned the city’s ongoing discussions to improve its recreational offerings and sports fields. “We’re considering doing a $20 million bond to expand and improve our Parks and Recreation Department, and included in that would be a Tanner Hall expansion, buying more property along the corridor here on Lake Apopka,” Rees said. “We’re also talking with the Church of Christ about some
fields they have in the back of their church so we can expand the number of soccer fields in our area. So we’re doing quite a bit with that.” WINDERMERE
Acknowledging the ongoing traffic problems in Windermere, which is landlocked and experiences cut-through traffic from the surrounding areas, Bruhn stressed the town’s efforts to pursue road improvement projects and cooperate with the city of Ocoee and Orange County on potential road expansion projects to increase connectivity and traffic flow. Bruhn also remarked on the town’s priority of protecting and preserving the quality of its lakes, as well as a new utilities expansion initiative that will explore the feasibility of retrofitting the town for water, wastewater and underground electric. “I firmly believe that cities and towns are just like a home — you’ve got to maintain them and you’ve got to improve them, or pretty soon, nobody wants to live in them,” Bruhn said. “So I think that’s what our goal is in West Orange: to just continue trying to improve our quality of life.”
Heritage foundation expanding footprint with covered courtyard AMY QUESINBERRY COMMUNITY EDITOR
The small paved area between the Winter Garden Heritage Museum and the History Research & Education Center hasn’t been considered much more than a basic walk-through for downtown Winter Garden. By fall, though, the Winter Garden Heritage Foundation is planning to unveil it as a rentable extension to Heller Hall to the immediate east. It also will create a fluid presence along downtown Plant Street. “It more aesthetically joins the buildings,” said WGHF Executive Director Cynthia Cardona. “When folks rent Heller Hall, it allows us to also rent out this space. So, we can tout it as an indoor-outdoor venue.”
The 864-square-foot open space will have a flat roof, brick columns, brick pavers, ceiling fans and lighting. F.W. Chase Enterprises, of Windermere, is the project contractor. There will be no seating, Cardona said, but tables and chairs are available and can be set up. Those renting can also string their own lighting for extra effect during their event. “People rented out the courtyard occasionally, but they had to provide their own tenting, and it just wasn’t aesthetically pleasing,” Cardona said. This project has been in the works since the history and research center opened in January 2015. “As soon as people saw the fence go up, they started calling, wanting to know when it would

be finished so they could book it,” Cardona said. Construction is slated for completion at the end of summer. In
the meantime, Heller Hall still is available for rentals. The space, at 1,248 square feet, can seat up to 70 people.
“It doesn’t impact any of our rentals that are already booked or are being booked in the future,” she said. “But eventually it will add to the space.” She stressed that the courtyard and Heller Hall are still intended for intimate groups. The heritage foundation typically rents out the space for bridal and baby showers, birthday parties, corporate meetings and small church functions. An average of 45 events are held there each year. Cardona said the WGHF is using funds that were left over from the capital campaign for the construction of the History Research & Education Center. Naming opportunities still are available. Fourteen After School Zone teams from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida tried to persuade the judges in the fourth annual Young Entrepreneurial Shark Tank competition — and the Ocoee Middle School students were selected the winners. On the winning team from OMS were Jayden Currence, Maryah Jimenez, Maiya DeCruiz, Jack Arnett, Brandon Bahadur, Terek Bahadur, Rayne City, Hayley Maltba, Nia Carter and Kylie Jones. Two other West Orange County middle schools participated, as well: SunRidge and Lakeview. The 14 contenders were challenged to come up with a prototype product and submit a video to promote it. Judges narrowed the entries down to the top seven, and each of them had to pitch their idea in front of the judges. The other seven teams set up a display at the competition, so all 14 products were showcased. The event was held at Nova Southeastern University – Orlando Campus The Eco-Pop was described as “a delicious lollipop with a biodegradable stick containing seeds, which can be used to grow the fruit of the lollipop’s flavor.” Students had to produce prototypes of their products, so the Ocoee students created the sticks — complete with seeds — on a 3D printer. The candy portion was
made with molds and then added to the stick to offer an edible product. Participants had to give a threeto five-minute PowerPoint presentation, which was followed by questions from the judges, similar to the “Shark Tank” television show. “They very clearly stated the problem of all the waste that is produced by food wrapping, and the judges found this very persuasive,” said Michelle Ramos,
assistant director of middle school programs for Boys & Girls Club Programs of Central Florida. “Plus, it was a super clever idea that the sticks were not only biodegradable but would actually produce. And they were mindful that the seeds coordinated with the flavor.” In addition to Ocoee, West Orange schools Lakeview and SunRidge also made it to the top positions to pitch to the judges. Lakeview’s company name was Virtual Life Industries, and the focus was
virtual wear. The students created a full-immersion bodysuit for video-game players so they could feel the impact of the sports game or racing game, Ramos said. SunRidge’s idea was “Trends with Friends,” a talk show for kids that emphasized appropriateness for school-age use. Gymnastics USA has provided mostly recreational and lowerlevel competitive gymnastics in the past but is now able to offer the sport on the elite level. The Arthurs purchased all of the gymnastics equipment used solely for the 2017 World Championships in Montreal. “It’s brand-new equipment, only used once by the highest-level gymnasts in the world,” Zander Arthur said. “We bought all the men’s and women’s equipment and had it shipped down here. I called up there, and they were packing it up, and I said, ‘Hey, instead of sending it back to the warehouse, why don’t you send it down here?’ “That’s a really big deal to have the very high-level equipment, because it’s very hard to come by,” he said. “It’s very expensive. So many gyms have equipment that is about a decade old.” The brothers are expanding the Ninja Kids program, where students learn how to act like a ninja. Zander Arthur explained the classes as a mix of gymnastics, martial arts and parkour. He and his brother designed the program and license it to nearly 100 gymnastics programs in the country, he said. For the last two years, 100 Women Strong has focused its efforts on early-childhood education. The project — Circle of Security — focuses on positively affecting the social and emotional development of children ages 3 to 5 who live in or come from high-risk situations. One of the statistics that drove the group to focus on this was when it found out how many children are being expelled from preschool, Hartog said. In high-trauma areas the preschool expulsion rate is actually higher than in middle and high schools. Additionally, according to the Early Learning Coalition in Orange County, 45% of local children are not socially or emotionally ready for kindergarten. “It’s really just how they deal with stress, and how they interact with their peers and adults in their lives is not healthy and certainly not preparing them for kindergarten,” she said. “That affects their reading scores (and eventually) graduation rates. We focused on private preschools in the Pine Hills area, because it’s considered a high-trauma area. Kids who have been through trauma, its difficult for them to be emotionally ready for school.” The project focuses on building relationships so that a child in a teacher’s care will feel safe and secure to explore and come ready to learn. It revolves around finding the root cause of negative behavior — what the child’s needs are and how they can be met. “The teachers have a better way of understanding the children and their needs and why they’re behaving the way they are,” Hartog said. “The environment these kids grow up in is not a very safe and secure one, so learning their ABCs is the last thing on their mind.”

While Hartog said she is more about structure and meeting the needs of the circle’s members, Desai is connected in the community and has a knack for social media, outreach and networking. “It’s been terrific because we live close to each other, work well together and have developed a respect and friendship out of it as well,” Hartog said. “The whole leadership team has really rolled up their sleeves and jumped in and we’ve been thrilled and honored at how far we’ve come in the last year.”

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Helen Keller’s vision for humanity is the guiding principle of 100 Women Strong, a giving circle at the Central Florida Foundation. And at the helm of the circle are two Windermere residents: Avani Desai and Leslie Hartog. Giving circles differ from the fundraising methods of many nonprofits in that the funds come from the circle members themselves. Each member of 100 Women Strong contributes $1,100 annually, and together, they research local source problems and devise a plan to solve them. The goal is to find the root cause of problems local women and children are dealing with and then focus on a lasting solution. Rather than throwing money at a symptom, Hartog said, the women in the giving circle put their heads together to analyze the best possible solution. “We vote on our area of focus and then have a research team and a grants team do the research on the root cause and the project we want to support,” said Hartog, 100 Women Strong’s co-chair. “We work with experts in the community and different nonprofits. … We’re about collaborating with the community, working with the experts and figuring out, ‘How do we fix it?’” Hartog got involved with 100 Women Strong about twoand-one-half years ago and met her co-chair, Desai, when she joined shortly after. Hartog is the co-founder and CEO of Community Seal, and Desai is the president at Schulman & Company. “We’re both fairly new to the organization, but when we joined the woman who had started it … had moved away from Central Florida and after that the membership had waned, so they were down
to about 17 members when I joined,” Hartog said. “We got ourselves organized when I joined and Avani became my co-chair after she joined and we started doing some recruiting. Our goal is to get back up to 100 women, and we’re about up to 70. We’ve been doing a lot of growing and making sure that we have things for everyone — networking events, our award ceremonies, several teams people can join — but at our core we look for source problems in the community.”

How long has JFS Orlando been in operation? “We were incorporated in 1978, and we have a whole list of programs we offer to clients, individuals and families in need in Central Florida,” said JFS Orlando Executive Director Eric Geboff. “This organization was started by the Jewish community 40 years ago. … However today, (more than) 94% or 95% of our clients are not Jewish.” How has JFS Orlando impacted the community? “We focus on four areas: hunger, aging/end of life, mental and emotional stability and homelessness prevention,” Geboff said. “We have several programs that fall underneath each category. … We (have provided) more than 1.6 million meals and have offered more than $2 million in financial assistance to help those in need with mortgage and utilities to

get them through to the next month. … It really does impact the community in a positive way, so there’s lots of successful programs we offer.” What is significant this year for the JFS Orlando community? “We’re celebrating our 40th anniversary,” Geboff said. “When we look just year to year and see that we impact the lives of 10,000 people every year, it tells us that we’re doing the right thing. … That gives our board and volunteers a really good feeling about what we’re doing and how we’ve been doing it, because the need continues to grow and we know that.” What sets JFS Orlando aside from other similar organizations? “What’s cool about us is we provide a holistic approach to serving people,” Geboff said. “People tend to have multiple

Scott Porter Topping was born on July 20, 1959, at Bon Secours Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts, to Arthur Thomas Leo Topping and Muriel Elvita Topping. Scott, our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, but above all else, spending time with his grandchildren. “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” was an appropriate song to play at the unveiling of two Buddy Benches at Oakland Avenue Charter School on Monday, May 21. The ribboncutting ceremony was the culmination of months of work by third-graders to get the friendship benches for the playground. The ceremony was held indoors because of recent rains, but that didn’t stop the students’ enthusiasm at seeing the results of their hard work. “Today is about celebrating friendships and celebrating good citizenship,” Principal Pam Dwyer told the second- through fourthgraders gathered in the cafeteria. Special guests included friends in the community — representatives of the Winter Garden Masonic Lodge No. 165 F&AM, the town of Oakland and the school PTO. After members of the lodge unveiled the two benches, students read the Buddy Bench rules, performed a skit to demonstrate how the benches are to be used and had classmates recite the Buddy Bench pledge.

The PTO contributed $300. Students also held several fundraisers to help reach their goal. “Throughout this year, we have had the opportunity to take part in receiving a grant and going through a process to adopt Buddy Benches at our school,” said thirdgrade teacher April Krempasky. “Our students have worked very hard in this process to educate other students and create a voice within the school in regard to location and styles.” There are 536 students at the school, so the third-graders hosted an election process, campaigning and allowing the student body to vote on details such as the font and the image. The third-graders wrote persuasive letters about creating this friendship space and sent to them to various community leaders, including Dwyer, town of Oakland officials and principals at area schools. “You will see that your action, whether alone or together, can make a difference,” Dwyer said. “(The Buddy Benches) are intended to foster a sense of community engagement and collaboration to be kind to your peers to eliminate loneliness and foster friendship on the play-

How would you assess the spring season, overall, for yourself and the team? Our offense was just moving. We had a lot of big plays that brought us down the field, and I got to be the lucky one to finish (the drives) out. … We did a really good job moving the ball, and our defense didn’t allow any points. How excited are you for the opportunity to play in the first official game at Foundation Academy’s on-campus field this fall? After all, the Warriors have a growing reputation on the state and national level, such that when they arrive at Historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach for the Final Four — as they have for each of the past three seasons — opposing teams subconsciously hear “The Imperial March.” So, it wasn’t a shock to the Florida softball community, at large, that West Orange was back in Vero Beach and playing for another state title last Thursday, after beating Timber Creek 2-1 a day earlier in the state semifinal. But, I’ll let you in on a little secret — it was a bit of a surprise to them. “We definitely were not expecting to be here, but it makes the season even better,” senior outfielder Lexie Blair said. It’s a sentiment head coach Todd LaNeave, who has guided the program through its unprecedented run these past few seasons, shared. “Did I think we would be here? Not initially,” LaNeave said. “That’s just because we were still trying to figure things out.” None of this is to say the Warriors expected to be bad or that they had subpar players. Rather, there had been significant graduation turnover from the program’s championship teams in 2016 and 2017. And even though the players coming up from junior varsity were undoubtedly talented, it is still hard to know what a player is capable of until she is playing in big-time varsity games. It was unclear to LaNeave and his staff where the offense would come from in a lineup that lacked big bats.

And if you look at the past four years for West Orange — regional runner-up, state champion, state champion and state runner-up — it’s the dictionary definition of sustained excellence. And there’s no reason to think it’ll slow down, either. “We certainly don’t take it for granted — it’s pretty special,” LaNeave said. “We’ve got something really special at West Orange softball, and I’m hoping we can continue that.”

West Orange struggled at points during the season, too. The Warriors were beat 10-0 in the second game of the season, were swept by district rival Apopka and their eight losses in 2018 is more than their losses from 2015, 2016 and 2017 — combined. Injuries ravaged the lineup and, at one point, a 20-athlete roster only had 13 girls available. Blair and LaNeave said it wasn’t until just before the district tournament — a tournament for which the Warriors were the No. 3 seed — that things started to come together. What’s more, LaNeave had a heart attack in March that sidelined him for more than a month. That left Kelsey LaNeave — Todd LaLeave’s daughter and lead assistant coach — to guide the team while also being concerned about her father’s wellbeing. Despite all of that, the Warriors ended up back within one game of a championship. Seen through that lens — through that perspective — the girls for West Orange were not hanging their heads for long. “It’s disappointing for about two minutes — but it’s not disappointing to be here (in the state final),” LaNeave said. “To be standing here after a state final, I’m speechless — this group was phenomenal this year, to be able to make a run like that.” As someone who covers high-school sports, I’ve always viewed state championships as fickle things — strange things happen in single-elimination playoffs. Even within this run for the program at West Orange, the team that was arguably the most talented — the Warriors’ 2015 team loaded with Division I

Warriors dominate spring football game E lijah Stimmell tossed three touchdown passes — all of which landed in the hands of Darrell Harding — and the West Orange football team cruised past visiting Gainesville in its spring game May 25, 45-7. West Orange, which went 7-4 and barely missed the playoffs in 2017, returns several players at the skill positions this fall — something that has the coaching staff excited for August. “I like where we are,” coach Bob Head said. “Our depth, to me, is a little concerning. But, other than that, I really like the way we played. They’re fun to coach.”

BEFORE THE STORM WATER HEATERS/ POOL AND SPA HEATERS
Most water, pool and spa heaters have a safety valve which will automatically shut off the flow of gas if the pilot light goes out. Tankless water heaters need a UPS backup device, connection to a 120V standby generator or a 12V inverter.
RANGE
Gas ranges with pilot lights require no additional care. Continue to cook as usual. When the electricity is off, surface top burners with electric ignition can be easily lit. Simply: Light match (preferably a wooden match) Hold match next to the top burner cap Then turn the control knob to the “light” or “high” setting. The burner will light and you can adjust the flame. Most ovens and broilers on ranges with electric ignition cannot be used when the power is off.
OUTDOOR GRILL
A portable grill should either be moved inside or securely tied down outside. A grill with a patio base should either be bolted down or disconnected and brought inside. A grill with a permanent post is usually secure and does not need any additional tie down. The lid of any gas grill remaining outside should be securely tied closed to prevent it from snapping open.
DRYER
Most dryers have a safety valve which automatically shut off the flow of gas. In addition, your gas dryer needs electricity to operate.
IF ASKED TO EVACUATE:
Leave the gas on. Turning off the gas could result in unnecessary delays in restoring your service. It is not necessary to turn off the gas at your meter or, if you use propane, at your tank. Should Lake Apopka Natural Gas deem it necessary to turn off the service, Company representatives will inform you. By leaving the gas on, you will be able to cook and, as long as there is a reliable supply of water, you will have hot water. Leaving gas on also helps you avoid reconnection fees.
AFTER THE STORM Clean-up efforts after previous hurricanes show that more gas lines are broken during clean-up than during the actual storm. Before removing fallen trees, call for a FREE utility line location by Dialing 8-1-1.
IF YOU SMELL GAS:
Do not do anything to cause a spark (i.e., using a garage door opener, portable phone, etc.). Immediately evacuate the premises and call Lake Apopka Natural Gas District’s 24/7 emergency number at 800.542.3344 or 9-1-1. It is important to call from a telephone away from the building where you smell gas. In the case of a gas leak, our first responsibility is to make sure the area is safe. Service will be restored as soon as possible. All District personnel carry identification and will, upon request, show their identification before entering your home.
IF FLOODING OCCURS:
If your home or business was flooded and gas appliances were underwater, do not attempt to operate the appliances. Water can cause damage to the internal safety mechanism and create a hazardous condition. Call Lake Apopka Natural Gas or a qualified appliance contractor for a safety inspection and to relight the pilot lights on your appliances. Check yard for loose items. Move and secure items not firmly installed before the storm arrives. This includes grills, patio furniture, swings, pool equipment and supplies, even water hose reels. Items such as these can be blown around by hurricane winds causing unnecessary damage to your home, propane tank or gas meter.
