Charges dropped against kidnapping suspect STAFF WRITER

Kidnapping, burglary and other charges have been dropped against a man arrested for holding two Rollins College students against their will at gunpoint.

Matthew Moody was arrested by police in early April for allegedly breaking into a home with a gun and demanding drugs. The suspect came across two Rollins College students and — realizing he had entered the wrong house — forced the two of them to take him next door.

The suspect then ransacked the correct home and reportedly took money and drugs.

Reports state he was wearing a bandana that covered his face, but Moody’s picture was later chosen out of a photo lineup because of his general height and weight.

After Moody spent three weeks in jail, his attorney was able to prove that he wasn’t in the state when the crime took place. He had rented a home in Texas at the time.

A total of 17 charges were dropped.

Police still are looking for the actual suspect, said Captain Pam Marcum, of the Winter Park Police Department.

“We are continuing to investigate this case, and have not ruled out any suspects at this time,” Marcum said.

ARREST MADE FOLLOWING OVERDOSE

An arrest has been made in connection with the near-fatal heroin overdose of a 17-year-old boy in Winter Park.

Police arrested Patrick Creasman Jr. May 4.

He is charged with supplying a dose of heroin to the teenager.

Police found the boy behind a building along West Fairbanks Avenue in February. He had no pulse and wasn’t breathing, but emergency responders were able to revive him.

“There was a needle involved, and the needle did test positive for heroin,” Capt. Pam Marcum of the Winter Park Police Department said.

Creasman has been charged with attempted first-degree murder with a weapon, attempted aggravated manslaughter of a child with a weapon, aggravated battery causing great bodily harm with weapon, and delivery of a controlled substance.

Creasman also has a previous arrest last year for possession of heroin.

I

n the dim light, an eerie “ooohaah-oooh” breaks the silence, climbing in waves like a thousand sirens. In the music room of Maitland Middle School, it’s only a dozen singers and the Shinedown song, “How Did You Love.”

A rainbow of backpacks and lunch boxes line the wall a few feet behind a line of kids in converse sneakers. The a capella group, comprising seventhand eighth-graders, practices for its upcoming music video.

In a capella, the voices don’t just form words; they become instruments. A soprano soaring like a violin while a bass vocal cuts an undercurrent of deep notes, driving the sound from below.

At the time of its inception in 2014, there were only a handful of other a capella middle school groups in the United States. “ T h e kids love it,” said L o r i Lovell, M a i t l a n d Middle School’s choral director of 14 years. “It started at the heyday when ‘Pitch Perfect’

and ‘The Sing-Off’ and all of that came out. They were dying to try it, and I said, ‘Sure we can try, and we’ll see what happens,’ and it was a success, mostly because they wanted it to be.”

In its first year, the group performed for Delilah, a professional a capella group, and Deke Sharon, a producer for the “Pitch Perfect” movies and the “Sing-Off” shows. Last year, it was invited to perform at the national a capella convention in Memphis.

This year, it is producing a music video.

The group reached out to a vocal

company, and after the company saw a video of the students singing, it agreed to do the project.

The group is currently more than halfway to its fundraising goal to make it happen. The recording for the video started May 3, and the video could be done before the end of the month.

“It will be a great learning experience for them,” Lovell said.

“Being in a recording studio and having to record with headphones and listen to a click track and have to tune will be a lot of work.”

The group is recording a song called “How Did You Love.”

“It’s the prime of their development, and middle school’s an awkward age, so to get them to think deeply about how you treat people has led to lots of discussions and hopefully some life lesson moments as well,” Lovell said.

The 14 students in the group all went through an audition process in front of a judges’ panel.

“It’s hard to get in, and when you do get in, you feel great,” said Nika Forouzannia, a seventhgrader. “And then it’s just a really fun experience, because you don’t find something like this in other chorus classes. It’s like a family.”

Like a family, they see a lot of each other, as they all come to practice before school starts every morning.

“They want it, and they make it happen,” Lovell said.

This year, the tone dropped an octave. It was the first year that boys were allowed into the group, which has served

as both a reward and a challenge.

“The challenge of having boys in a middle-school group is that their voices are changing,” Lovell said. “Most of what we’ve done this year has been special commissioned arrangements for this particular group. Because what the boys could sing in the fall, now their voices have changed and are different. So our arrangements have had to change and adjust.”

For the students, it’s all worth it. When asked if they plan to continue with the activity, they respond with an immediate and unified, “Yes.” Most of them will go to Winter Park High School, which also boasts a strong a capella culture, Lovell said.

“They’re not all going to end up being a music major or pursuing a profession in music, but all of them will have music as a part of their life in some way or another, and that’s the biggest joy for me,” Lovell said.

The students’ favorite part of being in the group is the singing and performances, but Lovell said she enjoys the process most — the conversations that she gets to have with the students about how to get better and focus on their goals. She loves to watch the “ah-ha” moments and the growth of each singer.

“There’s definitely mutual love and respect, which makes me want to work really hard for them and makes them want to work really hard for me,” Lovell said.

Behind her, the group sings the chorus, “The one thing you leave behind is how did you love, how did you love?”

Comstock property ready for purchase The city named Winter Park Redevelopment Agency LTD as the buyer for Comstock Avenue property.

CITY LEADERS URGE SCOTT TO VETO BILL

Winter Park has found its highest and best offer.

A buyer was named for a cityowned piece of property along Comstock Avenue during the May 22 City Commission meeting — ending an ongoing dispute of fairness and proper procedure of how the city sells land.

Winter Park Redevelopment Agency LTD was awarded the contract for sale by a vote of 3-2 after submitting the highest offer, $481,000.

Winter Park Redevelopment Agency LTD and Rowland & Company LLC had both submitted offers last month to purchase the land and construct townhomes on the property.

But before the City Commission had the chance to vote on an offer April 24, attorney Rosemary Hayes, speaking on behalf of Rowland & Company, disputed the procedure that led to those offers. Hayes said Dan Bel-

lows, of Winter Park Redevelopment Agency LTD, had submitted an offer of “$450,000 and/or a thousand dollars more should anybody else bid.”

Rowland & Company LLC had submitted an offer of $455,000, but Bellows’ earlier offer put him at $456,000.

The City Commission voted during its last meeting to have CBRE, the city’s appointed broker, handle the sale of a property at 301 W. Comstock Ave. Winter Park Redevelopment Agency’s final offer was $13,500 above Rowland & Company.

But city commissioners held

different viewpoints regarding the property’s future.

“I don’t want us to just sell for the highest price,” Commissioner Carolyn Cooper said. “If we’re not getting some sort of public benefit for getting rid of property, I’m just not sure how much sense it makes.”

Commissioner Peter Weldon reasoned that the sale of the property makes sense.

“It may not have any real residential or social purpose we can add to the city,” he said. “I would rather take the funds and consider other acquisitions and/or improvements to our existing

City Manager Randy Knight said the commission wants to maintain the aesthetics of city streets and hopes to avoid ugly poles with “refrigerators” on them. The bill also could undo work that the city has done over several years to underground its power lines — an endeavor not only for aesthetic purposes but for the health of street trees, they said.

t’s colorful — and it’s alive!

Top Shelf Aquatics along Aloma Avenue in Winter Park is one of only a few spots in the state that has its own coral farm — growing vibrant, living decorations for aquariums.

The coral comes in all shapes and sizes. Some resemble psychedelic sunflowers, while others reach for the water’s surface with crooked, rainbow branches.

Every species has a peculiar name as well — including some named by Top Shelf Aquatics. “Bill Murray” has a red base with teal undertones, along with yellow/ peach limbs and teal tips. “Fruity Pebbles” has bright orange, yellow, green and blue throughout.

“Green Slimer” is predominantly covered in mossy green hairs, or polyps.

There are more than 300 unique species in the coral farm, housed in 2,000 gallons of water.

It’s an ecosystem of living color.

“It’s almost like art,” said Remy Lundy, one of Top Shelf’s many

coral caretakers. “It’s a collector’s piece, and you watch her grow.”

HOW IT HAPPENS

The coral farming process all starts when a piece of raw coral is shipped in, usually coming from what’s known as the “Coral Triangle” — a region surrounded by Indonesia and Australia.

Coral is first inspected for its potential to grow into a colorful species. It then goes to the farm, where it goes through a process of “dips” that removes parasites and keeps the coral healthy.

Depending on its desirability, the coral is then either sold or grown into colonies and harvested for smaller pieces called “frags,” which are then sold to customers.

Collecting coral is a hobby that continues to grow. Conventions such as Reef-A-Palooza and MACNA, where the most wellknown collectors show off their coral, take place across the country year-round.

Top Shelf Aquatics hopes to keep the hobby going strong by helping newcomers start their own tanks, General Manager Mitchell Grable said. The company hopes to edu-

cate the new hobbyists on how to properly take care of the colorful creatures through proper lighting and managing water quality.

“We build the hobby up around us,” Grable said. “In the past five years, the hobby has been growing. I’ve seen a lot more interest.

Shows (such as) ‘Tanked’ have helped the hobby tremendously.

“We’ve been there for the hobbyists since Day 1,” he said. “We help them every step of the way from when they first start and buy their tank.”

A LOVE FOR THE OCEAN

The hobby may continue to grow even more in years to come, Grable said. With reefs such as the Great Barrier Reef slowly dying off the coast of Australia, soon, the only coral on Earth will be found in man-made tanks, he said.

“Sooner or later, we’re not going to be able to have all the abundance of coral that we can get now,” Grable said. “If we can’t import more, we have to grow it.

“I don’t want it to come to this, but this might be the way to reinvigorate the reefs out there,” he said. “We have these aquaculture pieces we can put back there and

regrow. We love the ocean; that’s why we’re in this hobby.”

Watching an ecosystem grow and flourish is what makes the hobby so interesting, Lundy said.

“The relationships between everything in a reef tank and on a reef in the ocean is so complex,” he said. “There are so many small symbiotic relationships. I love learning every single day. Witnessing the relationships and watching everything grow — there’s nothing like it.”

Top Shelf Aquatics is looking to grow, too. The company plans to add another 800-gallon display tank and an area for shrimp, hermit crabs and snails, as well as an expansion of their farm.

For a moment, Grable looks over the tanks in the coral farm, his face showing just the slightest signs of pride. Huge light fixtures shine down into each tank, illuminating countless pieces of coral and creating a symphony of dancing bright neon colors.

“The future is pretty bright for us,” Grable said.

“It’s an economy that’s leaving so many families behind, where 45% of our jobs pay $15 an hour,” King said. “It’s an economy that’s at the back of the pack nationally.

Most folks don’t recognize that we’re competing with Montana and Kentucky for the 41st and 42nd spot nationally in terms of size of our economy per person.

It’s hurting families all over our state.”

King said the way to fix it is a long-term plan that supports small businesses that create jobs.

Affordable housing in Florida has taken a hit as well, he said, with $1.7 billion being “raided” from a trust fund that helps to build and preserve housing. King said it’s a battle he’s fighting each day at work. The president and CEO of Elevation Financial Group in Winter Park said it’s his company’s mission to revitalize housing for seniors and working families, spanning across the Southeast.

“Our state has an affordable housing crisis,” King said. “It is becoming increasingly less affordable to live in Florida, and folks are having to leave. That’s not fair. That doesn’t create an economy that works for teachers,

Born in Orange Memorial Hospital — now known as Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children— King would attend Winter Park High School. There, he played on the basketball team, served as the student body president and met his future wife, Kristen.

Growing up in Central Florida and starting a business here has

given him a unique perspective on the issues Florida faces, he said.

“I would be the first candidate coming from this region, at the very time when this region has gotten politically much more powerful,” King said. “Being right at the center of the state, it has its pulse on all the big issues.”

King understands he’s been labeled as the fresh face with new ideas, and he wouldn’t have

it any other way.

“I call myself a ‘progressive entrepreneur,’” King said. “That’s something that’s sort of my style of leadership, which is the concept being someone who believes in fairness, equality and justice, but marries that to entrepreneurship and financial discipline.”

During the May 22 council meeting, city officials selected Estep Construction Inc. to construct the sidewalk, with the condition that it completes the project by Aug. 7, 2017. The project, according to city documents, will cost $184,166.25, so the city authorized a budget of $203,166, which includes a contingency of $19,000.

Wells had a large role in the design and construction of the city’s new police station, fire station and city hall and the development of the Westside Master Plan. He also spearheaded the city’s efforts to increase SunRail ridership at the Maitland station.

Maitland City Manager Sharon Anselmo said Wells also assisted with the major redevelopment in downtown Maitland, including Maitland City Centre and Maitland Station, the retainment of current businesses and addition of new businesses, as well as the attainment of LEED certification for the city’s three new facilities.

“I have had the pleasure to work with Dick since 2002,” Anselmo said. “Dick is a longtime Maitland resident who cares very deeply about the city and has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life in Maitland. We will truly miss him here at City Hall but know he will enjoy his newfound free time with his wife Robin and their family.”

Come the fall semester, schoolage children who walk to Dommerich Elementary and Maitland Middle schools no longer will need to weave through cars on the street to get to school.

Soon, they will have their own sidewalk.

Following years of campaigns and parental concerns about the safety of kids who commute to the schools by foot, the Maitland City Council approved the construction contract for the long-sought sidewalk to be built along Tuscarora Trail.

Public Works Assistant Director Noel Cooper said the fivefoot sidewalk also will help the city improve its pedestrian connectivity, because it will connect to other sidewalk systems. The project, originally scheduled for 2020, was made a city priority following a 2015 petition and several appeals by parents. To hasten the project’s timeline, the city approved the reallocation of city funds from the now-postponed Maitland Avenue Corridor Study to the Tuscarora Trail sidewalk project.

Former Community Development Director Richard Wells worked for the City of Maitland for 16 years before he retired March 2017.

During the May 22 council meeting, Maitland Mayor Dale McDonald presented Wells with a retirement resolution and praised him for the projects he spearheaded from November 1980 through Oct. 24, 1986, and from January 2007 through March 2017.

“This is a very unusual day for me, because I have to do something that I haven’t had to do in a long time — shave,” Wells joked during the introduction of his farewell speech. “As the proclamation notes — boy, I’m starting to sound like a planner already, I’m sorry — I was here in the 80s and again in the 2000s. And the things that changed … there was the LinkedIn, there was the bowling alley, there was the Jack in the Box … and a lot of things that are no longer on the landscape. And I think the advancement the city has seen between the 80s and now is just as founding, and I think you’re all headed in a good direction, and I wish you the best of luck moving forward.”

he Winter Park Wildcats returned to the turf at Showalter Field last week for the first time since last fall’s regional final defeat.

Ironically enough, the Wildcats faced the team they would have faced in a state semifinal if they had won that last game against Seminole High — the eventual state runner-up Dr. Phillips Panthers.

Of course, for both Winter Park and Dr. Phillips, the successes of a season ago are already a distant memory. Both squads used the spring game May 17 — which the Panthers won, 35-21 — as an opportunity to assess newcomers and to get a look at returners in new roles.

“Spring is about getting better and seeing what you’re all about,” Winter Park head coach Tim Shifflet said. “I like the fact that we came out here and chal-

lenged ourselves against a really good football team.”

The final score read 35-21, although that includes the fourth quarter, which was designated for the junior varsity players to see some action. Dr. Phillips led 28-14 at the completion of varsity action.

Despite being behind on the scoreboard at the end, Shifflet said he was encouraged by what he saw and that the biggest areas for improvement are the offensive and defensive lines, where the turnover from last season was the highest.

“If we can get a little better up front, we’ll be OK,” Shifflet said.

“It’s a building process — spring is about just getting better.”

Winter Park will return to the Showalter Field to begin the 2017 fall season with its Kickoff Classic Aug. 18 against Edgewater.

Jayna Shah Twelve-year-old Jayna Shah is in a league of her own.

She’s the only female baseball player in Maitland Little League. Playing since she was 6 years old, Shah completed her season with the Maitland Cardinals as shortstop, pitcher and catcher in the league’s tournament Monday evening. She hopes to play for the New York Yankees one day.

What was your greatest accomplishment this season?

I hit a home run over the scoreboard and out of the park on our first game. It was a great feeling.

Why did you start playing baseball?

My dad played baseball, and I started playing when I was 6 years old. We saw a flyer for baseball at MLL, and we said, “Why not?”

Who is your favorite baseball player?

I love Derek Jeter. He was a shortstop, and so am I. The New York Yankees is my favorite team, and I want to play for them.

What do you do outside of Maitland Little League practice and games?

I still practice three to four times a week at the batting cages, and I rock-climb.

Schools assess teams following spring football The two schools faced one another for one quarter of play last week in their annual spring game.

Football is approaching fast, and both Orangewood Christian School and International Community School are ready to go to work. The two teams faced one another in a spring game Thursday, May 18, and both squads are looking to return to their winning ways.

ORANGEWOOD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

The Orangewood Christian Rams hope to turn things around following a disappointing 2016 season in which the squad went 2-8 overall. The team struggled to put up points consistently throughout the season, and several injuries didn’t help, either.

Unlike public schools, where there’s an overflow of players looking to make the varsity team, private schools such as Orangewood are working from a pool of about 30 players, with many forced to play on both sides of the ball, said Coach Bill Gierke.

The skill is there for the Rams, so staying healthy is the key, he said.

As Richard’s symptoms became more difficult for his family to manage, they needed support that lasted through the weekend. Meanwhile, the International Community School Comets also hope to make their way back to the win column after finishing with a 4-6 record last season.

The year before, the team finished with an impressive 8-2.

Next year is coach Mike Lodes’ first as head coach after spending two years watching over the offensive line, and he’s actively taking steps to put forth the best team possible in a smaller school.

Spring football this year was all about developing younger players. With a roster of about 20 players, the Comets are developing seventh- and eighth-graders for the varsity squad.

“We went into the spring game with seven middle-schoolers,” Lodes said. “We’re focusing on fundamentals and understanding how to tackle properly, block properly and run routes. We want to figure out how to get these kids involved in varsity football without injury or compromising themselves. That was our goal: to see what we had.”

One area of focus is tackling.

Strength training also is on the agenda for this summer, and a new weight room at the school this year will help the players toughen up before August, Lodes said.

“They weren’t hard hitters last year,” he said. “We have some aggressive kids this year, so I think that will turn it around.

We’ll improve in that measure at the very least this year.”

The team will rely heavily on its three team captains — quarterback Jarrett Conkling, lineman Josh Lodes and outside linebacker Zane Denslow.

“Our focus has been on teamwork, working together and being dependent on one another,” Lodes said. “I think these kids are pretty special — they have a lot of potential.”

“This is ironman football, Gierke said. “Some of these kids don’t come off the field. You have to do everything you can as a coach to try and keep them healthy, motivated and ready to play in the game. If you lose a good player at this level, it’s like losing three, because he plays offense, defense and the kicking game.”

That’s all the more important when players also are playing multiple sports. The summer will be about getting the team in the best shape possible, Gierke said.

Last year’s backup quarterback, Ian Stone, will take the starting position as a senior after getting a year of experience under his belt.

Gierke also is eager to see the veteran leadership that comes from the group of nine seniors this upcoming year.

“If you’re going to succeed in football, you have to have some leadership,” he said. “If you don’t have that, it’s extremely tough on a coach. This is a good group of kids. We know we have to make some progress in the summer.”

How to choose the right boarding facility 4 any business that won’t show you the entire facility — especially the rooms where your dog will be staying and the spaces where your dog will be playing.

With summer almost here, many people are planning vacations where they can’t take their dog(s). In the absence of trustworthy family or friends available to keep your dog, boarding is a great option. But not all boarding facilities are created equal. You want to make sure you choose the right home away from home for your dog. How do you do that? Cost aside, check out these five tips to make sure you select the best facility for your beloved friend.

Ask when the facility gives tours and then stop by unannounced during those hours. Notice how clean the facility is, what it smells like and how loud the dogs are barking. Look to see if the facility has outdoor space and if so, whether it uses artificial turf. Many dogs don’t like the feel of it, plus it gets hot during the summer. Look at the boarding rooms. Disregard

Ask how many times your dog will be outside each day and for how long.

Often, larger facilities have to limit the amount of time your dog will have outside of his room because of space and the large number of dogs they have in their care. Ideally, your dog should spend most of its time outside of his room during the day, only going in to rest and sleep at night.

Ask what your dog will be doing when out of his room. Will he be playing with other dogs? If so, ask about the evaluation process for selecting the right play group for your dog. Ask how many dogs are in any given play group (more is not better) and about the staffto-dog ratio. If your dog isn’t friendly with other dogs, ask exactly what he or she will be doing when out of the room.

Exercise is important, yet many large boarding facilities only give dogs minimal time outside to sniff and go potty before putting them back in their room, especially those dogs who aren’t good with other dogs.

Ask about their vaccine requirements. Stay away from any facility that doesn’t require vaccines or titers for certain vaccines (such as DHPP). Facilities also should require a fecal exam every six months. Without this protection in place, your dog could easily come home sick.

Ask about add-ons. Most facilities charge for myriad extras, such as extra or one-on-one play time, a bedtime treat, belly rubs, a bath and much more. You could wind up spending more than you planned, without knowing if your dog ever received the extras you purchased.

Do your dog a favor — do your research and find a facility where your dog will thrive while you’re away. Your dog will have a great time and you’ll have peace of mind, a win for both of you.

On Thursday, May 18, Leadership Winter Park Class XXVII celebrated the graduation of 43 esteemed leaders from our program, which is designed to equip and mobilize advanced leaders and community trustees for Winter Park and our region.

Dr. Richard Lapchick, endowed chair of the DeVos Sport Business Management Program at the University of Central Florida, led the keynote address, admiring the diversity represented in its graduating class. We also recognized the Leadership Winter Park 2017 Community Leader Award Recipient Daniel Butts, chief operating officer at Battaglia Group Management LLC and Leadership Winter Park Class XVIII graduate. Congratulations to all of our graduates and award recipient.

As the celebration of Class XXVII’s accomplishments comes to a close, excite-

ment prevails at the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce as we continue to recruit for the upcoming class program beginning in August. Leadership Winter Park is a program designed to provide a behindthe-scenes view of the city combined with customized leadership training.
