isitors to the former Russell Drive Park, in north Ocoee, might notice a new sign on the east end of the park. It now is known as Frank W. Turner, named for a former longtime Ocoee resident who also served as city commissioner and as an officer in many civic organizations.

The Frank W. Turner sign was unveiled Saturday, May 11, in front of friends and generations of family. The Ocoee City Commission approved the name change last August, and the new sign recently was installed.

Barbara Martin, Turner’s step-

daughter, approached the commission last year about renaming the park, which is near her home on Russell Drive. Martin and her grandchildren frequently walk around the nearby pond to play on the park’s playground, and she said it would be a great honor for the city to recognize their grandfather.

Former Commissioner John Grogan was instrumental in getting the park renamed, and he was among the city officials at Saturday’s sign-unveiling ceremony.

Mayor Rusty Johnson and Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen also were present. Johnson recalled his friendship with Turner and their many golf games.

“Frank was a good person to

the city of Ocoee,” he said. “If you come to this town, you’re a part of our town.”

Turner was in the U.S. Air Force before moving to Ocoee. He served as a city commissioner from 197074, and he held officer positions with the West Orange Jaycees, West Orange VFW Post 4305 and Ocoee Lions Club. He was a volunteer firefighter and owned the local Exxon gas station for years.

Turner married his wife, Mary, and became a father to her four young children. He died in 2007.

“It’s a good thing to have in a park where your family lives,” Johnson told Turner’s relatives.

“You can bring your kids and grandkids here. I’m proud to see his name up here.”

Winter Garden adopts new invocation policy The policy will allow city commissioners to take turns leading the invocation.

Winter Garden leaders adopted a resolution during its May 9 City Commission meeting that amends its invocation procedures.

Resolution 19-03, which passed 4-1, with Commissioner Colin Sharman opposing, was drafted in response to the city’s decision to revise its policy following ongoing criticism by Winter Garden resident Joseph Richardson.

For five years, Richardson has requested to lead the invocation at a commission meeting. Despite being on the invocator list, he had never been selected to lead an invocation.

In response, Richardson strongly urged commissioners to either switch to a moment of silence or eliminate or revise the city’s invocation policy, which he believed allowed for religious discrimination and prohibited inclusivity.

Despite his suggestions, which he repeatedly expressed during city commission meetings’ public forum for several years, Winter Garden City Manager Mike Bollhoefer said the city’s decision to revise its policy was only indirectly influenced by Richardson’s comments.

“The fact that he was going up there and making statements that what we were doing was unconstitutional led other commissioners to think about it and to come to me to ask me questions,” Bollhoefer said. “And then they read the decision from the (Greece v. Galloway) case themselves, which led us to look at modifying the policy.”

Over the past year, Richardson also had been gathering signatures from around the state and country requesting the commission to revise its invocation policy. The petition received 2,217 signatures, according to Oviedo resident Jocelyn Williamson, who serves as the director of the Central Florida Freethought Community.

“I, along with other members, have come tonight to present a petition regarding what we perceive is an unconstitutional invocation practice,” Williamson said.

“ As you know, the 2014 Supreme Court’s decision on invocations in Greece v. Galloway determined that all voices in a community must be heard. And in 2014, our organization began to reach out to local governments where each of us was living, including Winter Garden, to offer our voices alongside the community. As a result, we are honored to have offered more than 75 secular invocations … Unfortunately, this has not been the case here in Winter Garden.

“In 2014, a member of our board of directors requested the opportunity to offer an invocation before these meetings,” she said. “You failed to honor his request and to follow a process that would be considered fair and just by a reasonable observer. For five years, you denied him the opportunity to offer his words of inspiration to solemnize these proceedings. So in response to what we perceive as religious discrimination against him, we have collected 2,217 signatures requesting the city to revise its invocation policy to reflect inclusivity and to be truly representative of all members of this community.”

Williamson was joined by sev-

eral other community members in her request for city commissioners to revise their policy and ensure it is not discriminatory.

“My recommendation is that you would stay the decision until more conversation can be had, even with leaders in the evangelical or protestant community, like myself,” said Chris Ogden, campus pastor for the First Baptist Church’s Horizon West campus.

“I would value the opportunity ... knowing that there are many who feel this policy is discriminatory.”

Bollhoefer said he did not consider the old policy to be discriminatory and, after fully reading the Supreme Court decision case, determined it was also constitutional.

However, he believes the new policy is preferable, he said.

“What will happen now is that each commissioner will be given a turn to do the invocation,” he said. “And during their turn, the commissioner may choose to do a moment of silence, the commissioner could give his turn to someone else, or the commissioner could do a prayer or any kind of invocation they want. It’s also spelled out within that resolution — direct language from the Greece v. Galloway ruling — the

rules about how to do a prayer to ensure it does not become coercive, because the Supreme Court said it cannot be coercive.

So what we’ll probably do is keep the prayer to the first five minutes before any official business is conducted. That way if anyone feels offended, they don’t have to come until 6:35.”

Bollhoefer said the city changed its policy years ago following the Supreme Court decision.

“We used to have commissioners do the prayer maybe four or five years ago, and during that time when the Greece V. Galloway decision was made, there was a lot of confusion and a lot of cities changed their policies,” he said. “And we did so as well to fall in line with the other cities, but then we felt we should take another look at it and really read it. And so, after really reading it, we realized we can do all this and have a better policy that satisfies all the different beliefs of the commissioners.

“Some of our commissioners believe a moment of silence is more appropriate, and some believe a prayer is more appropriate,” Bollhoefer said. “So this policy allows our commissioners to make that choice.”

incoln Davis doesn’t remember his first date with his wife or the day they brought home their rescue dog, Chicken Nuggets, and he has trouble piecing together moments of his life.

He also doesn’t recall anything from that day one year ago, when he survived a life-threatening medical ordeal — except the pain.

Early April 20, 2018, the 38-yearold Ocoee resident went into cardiac arrest while drinking coffee on his porch, and doctors have said it’s a miracle he is alive.

Davis and his wife, Leyia, are grateful for all the people involved in saving his life, and they reached out to the Ocoee Fire/Rescue Department in hopes of recognizing the five crew members on Engine 26 and Rescue 26 who responded to the 911 call.

In a special ceremony May 2 at Ocoee Fire Station 25, Fire Chief John Miller presented the Lifesaving Award to paramedic/Lt. Andrew Lindeman; firefighter/ paramedics Peggy Robles, Matt Roy and Jordan Mieras; and firefighter/EMT Connor Heiskell.

The Lifesaving Award is given “for an act of prompt and alert livesaving efforts on or off duty that results in saving a life or bringing back life with a measurable outcome after hospitalization.” The recipients were given framed certificates and commendation bars for their uniforms.

GETTING ANOTHER CHANCE

One of Lincoln and Leyia Davis’ favorite songs is “Reckless Love,” in which Cory Asbury sings about Matthew 18: 12-14 — the parable of the lost sheep and the shepherd leaving the 99 to recover the missing one. Lincoln Davis had even sent his wife the song lyrics in his last text to her before experiencing cardiac arrest.

CARDIAC ARREST Cardiac arrest is the abrupt loss of heart function in a person who may or may not have been diagnosed with heart disease. It can come on suddenly or in the wake of other symptoms and is triggered by an electrical malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat. With its pumping action disrupted, the heart cannot pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. Seconds later, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse. Davis estimates she performed CPR on Lincoln for about 10 minutes while waiting for paramedics. She said their phones were not working, so McKenzy ran out the door, looking for someone who could help. She saw a neighbor getting ready to take his children to school and called out for him to dial 911. His wife came outside and

followed McKenzy home.

“Kathy (Lease) ended up being a medical assistant,” Leyia Davis said. “None of us had ever met her. They had moved in two weeks before. … She came up, and I was giving him CPR, and I was so tired. … This poor lady thinks she’s walking in to someone having a seizure, but it was a dead man getting CPR.” Three weeks prior, paramedics received a call that Lincoln Davis was having a seizure. He was taken to the hospital, treated and sent home.

The family mistakenly thought the same thing was happening again.

The neighbor took over chest compressions while a 911 operator assured them an ambulance was en route. The same emergency crew responded this time, too.

Davis and Lease performed CPR for a total of 17 minutes, and paramedics continued it while putting him on advanced life support and rushing him to the hospital. His pulse still was erratic, Davis said officials told her.

She also was told that paramedics could have declared him dead but kept trying to bring him back.

“It was important for me to know who calls if he’s dead or not,” Leyia Davis said. “We found out that it was Jordan (Mieras). I said, ‘Why didn’t you call it?’ And he said, ‘We didn’t want to stop fighting.’”

The Davises are thankful for their decision.

Leyia Davis wants the community to understand the importance of learning CPR. “People should get CPR trained, because if I hadn’t finished that CPR class, he’d be dead,” she said.

“Without Kathy, I wouldn’t have kept going; it was exhausting.”

Lincoln Davis arrived at the hospital a very sick man, and he went into cardiac arrest at least seven more times in three days.

A year later, he still is feeling the effects. He has been slow to return to his career as a finish carpenter because he tires so easily and can’t keep up with the physical demands.

He doesn’t know if he will ever be able to go back full-time. Friends have given him carpentry jobs so he can work at his own pace.

The Davises said they have been blessed with the support of their neighbors and friends, the Ocoee community and Glad Tidings Church. Lincoln Davis’ revival and recovery were very much “a God thing,” his wife said.

“We believe it was a God intervention, and you can talk to every single person and they will say that everything he went through — no one lives,” Leyia Davis said.

“He survived with minimal damage because all these wonderful people aligned by Jesus Christ who made a choice his life is worth it,” she wrote in a Facebook post.

“Jesus will leave the 99 saved sheep to get the one lost every time. He is faithful.”

Storage facility coming to Fountains West Ocoee commissioners approved the final site plan for a three-story storage facility and a land-use change for a five-acre parcel in Fountains West.

A storage unit facility will be coming to north Ocoee.

City leaders voted unanimously at the May 7 City Commission meeting to approve the preliminary and final site plan for a Summit Self Storage facility to be built on the Fountains West development. Commissioners also approved a land-use change for a 5.35-acre parcel located within the 43-acre Fountains West development.

The development is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Ocoee Apopka Road and West Road. The 102,600-square-

foot, three-story indoor storage unit facility will be built on 11.73 acres on Lot 8 of the Fountains West development. Prior to approving the site plan, commissioners approved a small-scale Comprehensive Plan amendment that changes the land-use designation of a 5.35-acre parcel located on the west side of Lot 8 from low-density residential and light industrial to commercial.

“They’re going to commercial land-use so they can do the selfstorage (facility),” Assistant City Manager Craig Shadrix said. “The Fountains West (development) has been divided up so much. …

challenge and has been an inspiration to all during our walk through the valleys and over the mountain tops.

Why did I write this? To create awareness. To help the public recognize that hearing loss is a major health issue, to become educated on the signs and symptoms. I wouldn’t be sitting here today if it wasn’t for my boss when I was first starting out in my career. He pulled me aside and, from his observation of how I was responding to others, suggested I should have my hearing checked.

I did, and I was fitted with my first hearing aid — all because he knew the signs and symptoms of hearing loss.

That is why I feel it is so important to become educated on the signs and symptoms, and why it is vital in not only protecting one’s own hearing before it gets worse but also for family members, friends or co-workers to understand how to help the person with hearing loss recognize he or she has hearing loss, and the importance of having his or her hearing tested, and also understand the kinds of problems related to hearing loss and how to work through them.

Those with hearing loss live within the hearing community, and when hearing aids are not enough, they can experience feelings of isolation. What is out there to bridge the gap? What is out there to help recognize the signs and symptoms of hearing loss? To emphasize the importance of getting hearing tested?

The most simple way to find answers is to go to the computer and type in “signs and symptoms of hearing loss” and check websites such as HLAA.org. The Hearing Loss Association of America is the nation’s foremost membership and advocacy organization for people with hearing loss with chapters in 38 states.

n 1927, the month was designated Better Hearing and Speech Month to raise awareness about the causes and treatments of hearing loss and speech impediments. Then in May 1986, President Ronald Reagan issued a formal proclamation designating May as the official month to “heighten public awareness.”

In the year 1986, there was an estimated 20 million Americans with hearing loss. Today, 20% of Americans (about 48 million people) report some degree of hearing loss. Sixty percent of the people with hearing loss are either in the work force or in educational settings. Two to three of every 1,000 children have some degree of hearing loss. Thirty school children per 1,000 have hearing loss.

One in five teenagers experience some degree of hearing loss, of which 80% is caused by loud noise. No surprise, with the cumulated effects from amplified music, sound systems at home and in the theaters and the growing use of personal listening devises that can blow your hearing away. About 2.3 million veterans have or have been treated for hearingrelated issues.

Hearing loss is one of the most commonly unaddressed health conditions in America today, even though it ranks with arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease. Hearing loss impacts a person’s quality of life.

It has been linked to stress, depression, loneliness, reduced job performance, and a reduction in physical and mental health.

Furthermore, hearing loss is not a one-way street; it also affects relationships with family members, close friends and co-workers who also are experiencing life-altering situations by being involved with someone with hearing loss. This can and will have an adverse effect — especially on close relationships such as husband and wife. The closer the relationship, the greater the effect is; just ask my wife. In June, it will be 50-plus years since my wife made the choice to join hands with a hearing-impaired mate, walking hand-in-hand on the journey with hearing loss, who has met the

of a parcel of land on West Colonial Drive from Rural to MixedUse Activity Center. Mayor Kathy Stark and Commissioner Rick Polland cast the dissenting votes.

An accompanying ordinance that proposed to change the official zoning map designation from A-1 Agricultural (Orange County) to Planned Unit Development (Oakland) was withdrawn by town staff, because advertising requirements were not met, and it was not voted on.

LIV Development Inc. is proposing to build a 242-unit luxuryapartment complex on 11.3 acres of property formerly owned by Gary and Dana English. The property is bordered by Johns Lake to the east, Orange Avenue to the west, West Colonial to the north and the English property to the south.

Many people who attended the meeting spoke against the project. Ernie Marsh, a resident of the Deer Island community on the east side of Johns Lake in unincorporated Orange County, presented a 300-signature petition opposing the development project.

John Dolezar, a Johns Lake homeowner who lives on Remington Road, said the apartments would take away from the smalltown atmosphere.

“We shouldn’t allow something that’s going to take away from so many and benefit so few,” he said.

Others were concerned with issues such as the proposed height of the apartments, density of the project, pitch of the land toward the lake, environmental impact on

the lake and wetlands, time of day the West Colonial traffic studies were conducted, increased traffic on the already-congested West Colonial and the precedent an apartment project would set.

The audience did include some in favor of the project, including Oakland resident David Stimmell.

“It’s ironic that so many people who don’t live in the town of Oakland are trying to tell us (what to do),” he said. “We paid for a lift station and sewer so we can have development.”

Hilgardt Lamprecht, a John’s Cove resident, also is pro-development: “I see 242 families come in — economic growth. It has been costing us to keep development at bay.”

Gary English, previous owner of the land in question, was in favor of the diversity the apartments would bring to the town.

One of Commissioner Sal Ramos’ concerns was soundproofing. Tim McEachern, senior director of development for LIV, said these would be luxury apartments and residents would be respectful of the surrounding community.

“I like a well-balanced town, and I don’t think we’re a well-balanced town,” Ramos said.

Commissioner Mike Satterfield questioned the impact of such a project on Orange Avenue.

“For folks who live at the end of Orange (Avenue), whatever goes on that property, it’s going to have to plan some high-falutin’ road going down there,” he said.

Matt Smith, attorney with Lightsey & Associates, of Winter Park, replied: “It hasn’t gone to

design yet, but we have an agreement with the town to make improvements.”

Stark said: “I am not anti-apartment. I am pro-diversity of housing. We are pro-‘doing everything we can for the town.’ Money is far down the road for me. It’s about doing the right thing.”

The project includes two threestory buildings plus seven twostory carriage homes fronting Johns Lake. There would be 120 one-bedroom units, 97 two-bedroom units and 25 three-bedroom units. Rents would range from $1,380 to $2,025.

The original vote was scheduled for April 23 but was postponed because of a discrepancy in property identification numbers.

Oakland approved the annexation of two properties — a four-acre parcel and seven acres of a 12-acre parcel.

“We had incorrect parcel ID information that we advertised on April 11,” Town Manager Steve Koontz said.

In response, the property appraiser’s office issued a statement: “The Orange County Property Appraiser’s office followed well-established procedures and subdivided the land into smaller components and as a result, new parcel identification numbers were assigned. ... Information regarding the new parcel numbers was available on our agency’s website after Feb. 26, 2019. … OCPA complied with its obligations pursuant to the filings made with the county, and the leadership of the town of Oakland knew of the changes in advance of the April 23 meeting.”

Eng, 41, began his career with Observer Media Group in 2000 as a staff writer for the East County Observer, which serves the Lakewood Ranch community in Bradenton and Sarasota.

In 2012, Eng and his family moved to Plant City to open and lead the Plant City Observer as general manager and managing editor.

Following the Observer Media Group’s purchase of The West Orange Times in 2014, the company asked Eng to move to launch and lead the company’s

news editorial efforts in Orange County.

“Mike is nearing his 20th anniversary with our company, and in that time he has served as editor of five of our papers,” Walsh said. “And with each one, he led his staffs to creating and producing great community newspapers that help build stronger communities.

said. “It was just a mixture of dry goods (at first). Then, the community actually started asking me if I had any keto items. This is when the keto wave and way of eating was just coming into play. I had to do my research and figure out what it was they were looking for: Was it the dry-goods part of it or something different? It actually turned out to be something different. They were wanting the baked goods.”

Although she started with keto baked goods, she has expanded to offer other treats, as well. Nobles also offers low-carb, gluten-free and sugar-free baked items.

“I just started out implementing some muffins, and then it evolved into breads, and then it evolved into cupcakes,” she said. “Now

it’s evolved into a full, custombaked goods (shop). I kept the bulk aspect of it as well. … I still have an inventory of bulk items, but my business has transformed into more (of) the custom-baked goods.”

Nobles added that relocating The Bulk Pantry to downtown Winter Garden would be ideal because much of her business is driven by foot traffic.

“I always wanted to be in the downtown setting,” Nobles said.

“My business is based, primarily, on foot traffic, which (at) this (current location) it’s a little bit more difficult to get that foot traffic. Whereas at the downtown setting, obviously, it’s not — there’s a ton of foot traffic. ... It all kind of just worked out perfectly.”

The Bulk Pantry in Winter Garden is making moves this summer — quite literally.

In June, the shop will be moving to a new location at 103 S. Main St. in downtown Winter Garden. The bulk goods shop originally opened in January 2018 in the Tri-City Shopping Center at the northeast corner of South Dillard Street and West Colonial Drive. With the lease for that location nearing its end, owner April Nobles said it was time to relocate.

“At the time (we first opened) … there wasn’t really anything in the downtown area that was feasible for, say, a start-up business from a budgeting standpoint,” Nobles said. “My lease is nearing up in August, and then fate has a way of stepping in. I have a friend — that we had actually (met) because of this store — and we had talked about a building that they had in downtown Winter Garden. They were getting ready to put it up open for a lease, and … it just kind of fell into place that I was able to work closely with them to go into their building.”

Like its name suggests, The Bulk Pantry offers a wide selection of cooking and baking ingredients customers can buy in bulk, such as nuts, candies, spices, flours, coffees and dried fruits and vegetables. Over time — and at the request of her customers — Nobles expanded her shop’s offerings to include various baked goods.

“We started out, primarily, by doing just bulk items,” Nobles

West Orange-area seniors named National Merit Scholars Richardson, 18, is the first Foundation Academy senior to earn the title of National Merit Scholar. He will be attending the University of Alabama to study law. He said he’s interested in studying law because he wants to help people and make a difference.

“I’ve always had an interest in politics and government,” Richardson said. “I see a lot of changes in the political world and a lot of changes in the political sphere, and I think that there needs to be strong leaders. … Not only do I have an interest (in that), but I also have a desire to make a difference.”

Richardson added that he has a particular interest in practicing constitutional law. He said his interest in government and politics began at an early age and was sparked by his dentist.

“When I was about 8 years old, I really didn’t know what government and politics were about, but my former dentist … actually ran for Senate in Florida,” Richardson said. “He won, and my family and GRIFFIN WILLMAN

During his years at West Orange, Tomecek has been involved in a number of clubs and organizations. He’s the president of the National Honor Society, AP Ambassadors and Cornell Club. He’s the treasurer of InterFSYO (Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra) … and I just love getting to play music.”

In addition to the Merit Scholarship, because Willman will be staying in-state to attend college, he also will be getting the Bright Futures Scholarship. With the Merit Scholarship and Bright Futures, most of his college expenses will be covered.

“I was pretty happy about it,”

Willman said his selection as a National Merit Scholar. “It’s just comforting to know that I won’t have to worry about paying for school. … I’m ready to get started with college. It will be more fun than high school, and I’m just excited for the course work that I’m going to be able to do because it’s going to be more directed toward what I really want to study and what I want to focus on.”

arning the status of National Merit Scholar is no simple task.

It begins during a student’s junior year, when they take the PSAT/NMSQT test, which serves as an initial screening program of the National Merit Scholarship competition. Students who score the highest in each state are named semifinalists. Of the 16,000 semifinalists for this year’s competition, 15,000 advanced to the finalist level.

From there, 7,600 finalists earn the title of Merit Scholar and receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Of the 7,600 students who earned the title of Merit Scholar, three attend West Orangearea schools. Those students are Jonathan Richardson, of Foundation Academy; Griffin Willman, of Windermere High; and George Braxton Tomecek, of West Orange High.

VOICES West Orange High a cappella group Noise Complaint needs to raise the $16,000 required to produce its first, full-length studio album.

WOHS. “The year before that, Macy’s put on a contest with Pentatonix, and everyone had to sing The Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back,’ and it was makeshift (production) with GarageBand and things like that.

“We wanted to be in the studio, record music videos and give them the experience of the other side of vocal music — not just behind a microphone,” Yasay said. “We decided this year we would take the project of doing an actual, full-length album with eight tracks.”

The members of Noise Complaint — including its 10 graduating seniors — are set to hit the studio between June 10 and 14 to record. They will produce their album with The Vocal Company,

a leader in a cappella production and education. However, the cost is hefty — $16,000.

Currently, the group is at the beginning of its fundraising for the project. However, Yasay said, every penny is worth it for these students’ music education.

“This year, we wanted to do this project with this group,” he said.

“We’ve been working on marketing a lot now, too, and it’s a good curriculum for them to have.

They learn music theory and vocals in choral (class) but very rarely do high-school music programs talk about the actual popmusic industry. Luckily, we have a great relationship with The Vocal Company. … We need certain amounts by specific deadlines.”

Having previously recorded a single — Jess Glynne’s “Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself” — the students in Noise Complaint have gotten a taste of studio life. But there’s still something so special about stepping into the booth and putting the headphones on, senior Zander Adkins said.

espite the name of the student a cappella group at West Orange High — Noise Complaint — its members never get complaints. They get standing ovations.

And now, for the first time since Noise Complaint’s inception in 2015, its current members have the chance to record their first full-length album.

“We’ve been interested in doing a recording project and started off tackling a single — which was ‘O Come, O Come Emmanuel,’ two years ago,” said Daryl Yasay, director for Noise Complaint and associate choral director at

that we would be recording, because we did ‘Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself,’ and that was a great piece itself,” Adkins said. “The feeling of going in and recording something with my voice and the end product being what it is, I was shocked. There’s this one part where we sing with Mekelya (Griffin), and it brings tear to my eye every single time, because it’s my friends and I, and we love to sing with (one another).”

“It was so beautiful,” said Griffin, also a senior, of their first recording experience. “It was like everything had come together in that moment. I felt everyone else’s energy through the music they sang, and all the notes on the page came to life.”

For senior Julian Carpio, the opportunity to record a fulllength album is one he never thought he would have.

“You grow up hearing these people on Spotify and iTunes and stuff, and it’s like, ‘These people are celebrities,’” Carpio said.

“You never think you’re going to be in that studio. I met this group and felt how much everyone puts into the music and things like that, so once I got into the studio it was the most incredible feeling in the world. …When (Yasay) told us about the album I couldn’t believe it. It’s the best thing in my life so far.”

Sitting in the school’s choir room surrounded by the members of Noise Complaint, Yasay still gets emotional when he recalls the day he told them about the album project.

Noise Complaint ready to hit the studio PUTTING IN THE WORK

Now that recording is less than a month away, it will be a whirlwind of a month for Noise Complaint between rehearsals — and graduation for 10 of 12 members.

Student artistic director Darby Lestin is in charge of ensuring the group’s arrangements are mastered before bringing them to Yasay for input. With 12 different voices and ranges to consider with each piece, she said, it can take a good chunk of time to nail things down.

The group practices daily in class and rehearses three times a week — plus sometimes on Saturdays. Additionally, members will learn their individual parts of the arrangements on their own time.

“The different colors and things that were going into the album were what really excited me about it,”

Lestin said. “Obviously, creating art with my friends (was exciting), but so was deciding what kind of art we were going to create and what The Vocal Company was going to do with that.”

But until recording begins, it’s all about two things: rehearsing and fundraising. Both are crucial ingredients for the album’s production, but Noise Complaint is asking for the community’s help with the latter. The group is pushing out a Kickstarter-style fundraiser through Orange County Public Schools’ SchoolPay, and each sponsorship level comes with different perks.

“We are very fortunate as a choral program to receive opportunities because of the kids’ work, the support of the administration, and the time and investment everyone pours into the program,” Yasay said.

Gala raises more than $12K for Oakland charter T he red carpet was rolled out and ready for guests to walk during Oakland Avenue Charter School’s inaugural gala Thursday, May 2.

It’s with great sadness that the family of Henry Wilson “Hank” Sines announces his passing at the age of 73 on Sunday, May 5, 2019, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Henry was born and raised in Montpelier, Ohio. His parents were Volney P. Sines and Elva (Gonter) Sines. After graduation from Montpelier High School, he went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Business degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He was immediately hired by an international accounting firm in Dayton, Ohio, and soon received his CPA accreditation.

His career was postponed while he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, serving a tour in Vietnam.

Mr. Sines moved his family to Florida in 1973 and started his own successful accounting firm in Winter Garden the following year. He recently retired from Sines, Blakeslee, Madyda.

It was the bottom of the seventh in the Class 8A, District 3 title game, and Ocoee High was tied at 6-6 with Lake Minneola.

With the bases loaded and only one out, all Perez had to do was make contact and put the ball anywhere in the outfield to bring Timmy Sides in from third.

“All I had to do was put the ball in play, but in my mind, I always want to hit a home run, so this was my opportunity, because if I don’t we are still going to win because the runner is on third,” Perez said.

“Just wait for my pitch, seeing it and just go through the ball — it’s as easy as that.”

In a moment about which every baseball player dreams, Perez wasted no time in becoming the hero the Knights needed. In the first pitch tossed his way, he drilled a shot to right-centerfield.

If you look up the word “dominate,” you just may find a photo of the Ocoee Middle track team following its Wednesday, May 8, performance at the OCPS Middle School Championship.

There, the Cardinals ran circles around the other 49 total schools (25 in the boys division, and 24 in the girls division) at the event, held on the new track at Boone High School. The boys took home first place, while the girls took second.

Their combined total also was good enough to take first overall among all schools.

“We did something remarkable that had never been done at our school before, and I was like, ‘Wow,’” said boys coach and Athletic Director Marcus Spencer.

“They were so excited.”

On the boy’s side, the Cardinals had runners place in just about every single event and some in first and second. That was the case in the 100m — in which Javon Saint-Flina finished first and teammate Jayden Gillens finished second — and in the 200m (with Gillens finishing first and SaintFlina second). Other first-place finishes included the 4x100m relay.

Going into Wednesday night’s meet, there was a real belief that after their four-meet season, the Cardinals could do something special.

But for a lot of the runners on the team, they just didn’t know how special the afternoon was going to be.

“All the hard work paid off, and we came out on top,” Saint-Flina said. “I didn’t expect us to do this well, but we went out there and dominated them.”

That kind of winning was a highlight for the runners on the team, but there was one thing that really stood out to athletes such as Gillens.

“The way the crowed cheered us on,” Gillens said. “And people coming up to us saying that we were fast.”

For the girls team, the Cardinals found success in numerous events to grab the silver medal.

Parker Tallis Since starting track in the eighth grade, Parker Tallis has grown as a runner. The Foundation Academy junior just finished 10th overall in the 400m at the FHSAA state meet, where he broke a personal and school record with a time of 51.2 seconds. When he’s not running, Tallis enjoys hanging out with friends and family in his free time.

When did you first start running?

I started playing football for the school in eighth grade, and during the offseason my parents were like, “Oh you’re going to do track, too.” I was like, “Please no” — I really didn’t want to do track. In eighth grade, I ran the 400m — my first race ever — and I won.

I started to get more and more into it … and then I just kept on with it. This year is the first year I got into cross country.

What was it about running track that made you want to do keep going?

I feel like it was something that came easier for me, and it was the simplicity of the sport, and the feeling of crossing the finish line in first place was just something that I’ve never felt with a sport before. With other sports I’ve played, you practice nonstop, but you win as a team. But to be able to win as a solo person — it felt more accomplishing and more rewarding.

You’ve been running for a while now. What’s been your favorite thing about your sport?

I love meet days.

It’s an all-day thing for track, and just spending time with friends and hanging out between events and being able to cheer everyone else on — and have them cheer you on — is just so much fun.

What was that like?

I was nervous for so long, because I was the only person from our school (who) went to states from the track team, so I was just there with my coach. I was just trying to collect my thoughts and get more focused for the race, because a lot of races I feel like I wasn’t mentally there. Then, we had to wait forever because of the lightning, so it was definitely chaotic. But I feel like for where I was on the track — I was on the very outside lane, so that’s just tougher to run with — I feel like I ran really, really well. It was a good experience for me.

Is track something you’d like to do at the next level?

I’ve thought about it — I’ve looked at certain colleges and I’ve got emails from certain colleges, but I just want to see where my senior year takes me.

“Off the bat, I already knew — I started jumping when I started to hit it,” Perez said.

What followed was Sides striding across home plate and a mob of ecstatic teammates squirting water bottles in the air and dog-piling in a celebration that has taken too long to happen.

In the history of the baseball program, Ocoee had never won a district title.

That’s no longer the case, and it’s the players who deserve a big share of it, head coach Chad Hall said.

“It’s more for the kids — they’ve worked hard, and they haven’t had it,” Hall said. “We have eight seniors on our team who have never had this district championship, and finishing almost dead-last last year and having a tough season, they deserve it.”

Much like that district title game Thursday, May 9, during which the Knights gave up a five-run lead before winning on the walk off sac fly, this season has been somewhat of a roller coaster.

Going into this season, the Knights were coming off a tough year under then-head coach Bobby Brewer — who left to become the softball coach at Olympia.

Hall was tapped to take the reins, and although he had been an assistant for the last two years, he thought given the talent and a new approach to the game, he could help his team find successful.

“I knew that we would have to change the way we approach the game,” Hall said. “I try to teach them a little more of the mental aspect of the game — the little things that make up the game.

I kind of tried to just teach my style of baseball — running around, talking to each other, not playing timid and playing aggressive.”

To set that kind of tone, Hall’s practices were longer and a bit more intensive than what his guys had been used to.

It was an idea that needed to work. Not only was Hall changing the team’s approach to the game, but also he was changing the difficulty as it relates to the playing schedule.

The concept was simple: Playing tougher competition would help get his guys ready for when it really counts.

“We’ve struggled within our district — we’ve done fairly well outside of it — so my goal was to play a little bit tougher schedule outside of our district,” Hall said. “We knew it might affect our wins and losses, but overall, it would help us in district play.

Tighter games, better competition and what we were trying to get is a situation where we would be a higher seed and be able to compete for a district championship.”

The harder schedule would make for a difficult year for the Knights. They started off with some struggles before finally finding their footing in the second half of the season.

Collin Hall — and the Knights always seemed to find themselves in a tough situation. But that never stopped them, Hall said.

And then there were the guys such as senior Harrison Koller who came up big for the Knights when they needed more. The senior ace on the team, Koller came into this season having never started a game on the mound — nor had he recorded anything of note.

“This kid is the hardest worker inside the classroom and outside the classroom,” Hall said. “He is the first guy on our field watering it, getting everything laid out, laying down the lines with spray paint; and then cleaning his hands up, coming into the locker room, changing into his uniform and going out there and pitching.”

It’s because of players such as Koller that the Knights program — after all the hard work and sacrifice — has led it to where it is now.

With the win over Lake Minneola, the Knights will play in its second state playoff game when they host Wiregrass Ranch Wednesday, May 15, after press time. So there is still time to add on to an already groundbreaking year.

“We are putting ourselves in a situation to be successful,” Hall said. “We are hosting that first playoff game instead of going all the way down to Tampa like we did two years ago. We know that even if we get down, we can still come back. And it’s playoff time, anything can happen — it’s baseball.”

1,600m. The two golds in the 800m and 1,600m came by way of excellent running from Hannah.

Seeing the girls team do so well at the county championship was, in Spencer’s words, a welcomed surprise.

“If you had told me at the beginning of the year that our girls would have come in second, I would have said, ‘I don’t know,’” Spencer said. “Our first track meet, our girls lost to the team who won county — Robinswood Middle — but I can actually say they put up a fight and put up the

second most points.”

Since the start of the regular season in early March, it’s been a process of learning and growing for both the girls and boys teams.

The maturation of young athletes is one of the most rewarding aspects of coaching, Spencer said.

“From where those guys came from, since I started knowing them — since sixth grade — I’ve gotten to see them grow,” Spencer said. “That’s the one great thing about the job — to get to see them grow and see them put in the work. The sky is the limit.”

And although there is usually only about 25 or so runners on most teams, for the boys, there are around 50 runners who play a variety of roles. Some are distance runners, while others are sprinters or field athletes.

It may sound like a lot, but for Spencer, it’s a way of letting young student-athletes get a taste of what it is like to compete and be on a team. It’s a way of building character and fitness in a student.

But most of all, it’s the simple act of giving kids a shot at doing something that they otherwise may never get a chance to do again.

“I give other kids opportunities, who will probably never play another sport or never run track again in their life,” Spencer said.

“It’s middle school — kids come out and you just try to give them opportunity. Running for your school — there is nothing like it.”

MAY 11, 1972 Shawnee Airlines operated commuter planes between the business markets of Florida in the 1960s and ’70s, and for a few years, it ran an air shuttle between Maguire Airport, in Ocoee, to Walt Disney World property.

The small planes took off from Maguire at 10:15 a.m. and returned around 5:30 p.m., giving Disney visitors a full day at the theme park for the low price of $9.50 for adults and $7 for children.

The company advertised in the May 11, 1972, issue of The Winter Garden Times that it was the “fastest and shortest route to the Magic Kingdom.”

Winter Garden postmaster Edgar M. Henderson (1916-2015) donated this photo of Ina Henderson, his wife, in 2013.

Ina Henderson was a first-grade teacher at Winter Garden Elementary School, which once stood on South Main Street. The license plate on the car is dated 1944, which is the year Ina Henderson began teaching at the school. She retired in 1970 after 26 years and died in 1994.

Forty high school seniors will graduate — 21 at Lakeview and 19 at Ocoee. Top graduates are Louise Bekemeyer and Dan McKinnon at Lakeview, and Elizabeth Tomyn and Jairus Osgood at Ocoee.

Several hundred West Orange residents attended a reception at the Winter Garden Inn to express their appreciation to City Manager Tom Sewell for his many years of dedicated service to the city of Winter Garden and to wish him well in his new career assignment as assistant county administrator.
