Orange County government leaders gave Dr. Phillips residents a look at the ongoing road and infrastructure projects in their area during a town hall meeting May 2.

“All in all, if we have everything lined up and everything is working real smooth, (it takes) about seven to eight years to construct a major roadway project,” Sanders said.

“A lot of that has to do with (that) we’re working on roads that have traffic on it already, so we’ve got to move the traffic … (and) that takes time.”

Sanders said one of the ways the county builds and/or improves roads is through public-private partnerships with developers. An example of this is the Daryl Carter Parkway extension currently under construction.

“This is a developer project that we partnered with,” Sanders said. “(The developer is) doing the first 900-foot segment from Palm Parkway to the Hilton Driveway.

They’re looking to complete that around the August timeframe.

“The county was approached by developers of that area, and they understood that we had a future plan for a roadway project to connect Apopka-Vineland Road to Turkey Lake/Palm Parkway,” Sanders said. “They wanted to participate in that. They knew that they were going to put a number of trips on the road (with their developments). They would have to mitigate for some of that. …

So through a process we have at the county, a road agreement was formed and got approved.”

structed in two segments — the first being constructed by a developer and the other by the county — and runs through the O-Town West development project and Kerina Parkside development project. Daryl Carter Parkway will be extended from Palm Parkway to Apopka-Vineland Road, which is about one mile in length. The first segment will be 900 feet in length and run from Palm Parkway to the Hilton driveway. Construction of the second segment is expected to begin after construction of the first segment is completed in August and is expected to be completed in 2021 Sanders said.

“That’s going to be a real nice reliever for Sand Lake Road,” Sander said. “It’s a parallel, eastwest roadway. There’s a lot of value in east-west roadways in Orange County.”

SAND LAKE ROAD

Improvements to Sand Lake Road also are in the works. A design project for Sand Lake Road from Apopka-Vineland Road to Turkey Lake Road is scheduled to begin in November, and construction is expected to end in October 2022, Sanders said.

“We weren’t able to do a wholesale widening of that roadway — the roadway is constrained by development,” Sanders said. “We figured out we could do an operational project without actually widening the roadway. We utilized the existing turn lanes that are out there today. it would give more through capacity to the roadway.”

Sanders added the county also hopes to improve access management of Sand Lake Road and add a multi-purpose path to the area.

“There were also some median improvements that we proposed,” he said. “There were some new left-turn lanes that we’re putting in. We’re going to take the flush median and put curb and gutter on it to help with access management. … (We’re) looking at access management, looking at operations, adding additional accessibility with a multi-purpose path for bikes and pedestrians, signalization upgrades (and) some aesthetic features.”

DIVERGING DIAMOND INTERCHANGES

In addition to the county making road improvements to the area, the Florida Department of Transportation currently has plans to 12:48 PM

improve traffic flow in the area as well. As part of the I-4 Beyond the Ultimate Project, FDOT plans to build two diverging-diamond interchanges within the Dr. Phillips area: one to be located at Sand Lake Road and Interstate 4 and the other at Daryl Carter Parkway and I-4.

A diverging-diamond interchange is a type of diamond interchange where the two directions of traffic both crossover and briefly drive along the opposite side of the road. This type of interchange is designed to accommodate left-turning movements onto arterial and limited-access roadways, and eliminates the need for left-turn bays and signal phases at ramp terminals. The design also reduces the number of potential conflict points by eliminating potential crossing conflicts between vehicles making left turns onto a freeway and opposing arterial traffic, according to FDOT.

“Before you get to the overpass, you switch direction,” Sanders said. “You’re on the other side of the road … and then as you come out (of the overpass) you switch back. It’s an innovative interchange concept that dumps off those turns free flow. Before you get to the switch, you dump off all of the right turn lanes. After make the switch, you dump off all your left turn lanes, (so it’s) free flow.

It’ll be much more efficient. I-4 will go over that diverging diamond (at Sand Lake Road), and there’s a bypass route that also relieves the left turns at Turkey Lake Road.”

Bidding will open in 2021 for construction for the divergingdiamond interchange at I-4 and Sand Lake Road, and in 2022 for the diverging-diamond interchange at I-4 and Daryl Carter Parkway, Sanders said.

Tale of whoa!

Two Girls Scouts from Troop 4571 are collaborating to create an animal therapy club at Windermere High School and horse-training facility at SOUL Haven Ranch.

Thanks to two local animal-loving Girl Scouts, Windermere High School will host an animal therapy club in the fall, and Soul Haven Ranch in Winter Garden soon will house a miniature horse-training facility.

Windermere High junior Karlen Randle and West Orange High junior Amber Wilkison, two scouts from Troop 4571, are spearheading the individual community projects, which will earn them their Gold Awards — the highest award a Girl Scout can receive.

Wilkison is taking the lead on fundraising and building a horsetraining facility for anyone wishing to earn their certification as a registered miniature therapy horse handler, while Randle is spearheading the formation of the Soul Buddies Animal Therapy Club at Windermere High School.

Although the high-school juniors had been in the same troop for nearly 15 years, they had never met before individually reaching out to pitch their community project ideas to Susan Nastasi, who owns and operates SOUL Haven Ranch.

“We’re looking for people who have a passion for animals — predominantly horses,” Nastasi said.

“People who love animals and want to serve others. So the idea of the program is to take the miniature horses out and serve the community’s population of children with special needs, geriatrics, hospice and veterans with PTSD. But after about a little over two years, I have grown the base of volunteer handlers by about only three. So then Karlen called me up and said, ‘Hey, I’ve been following your Facebook page for about six months, and I want to learn more about your volunteer program to create a club.’

And we went from there.”

Wilkison later went to Nastasi with a five-page proposal to expand the animal-therapy program by adding rabbits. Nastasi proposed another idea that would help support Karlen’s community project: an animal therapy training facility on SOUL Haven Ranch that would support the Soul Buddies Animal Therapy Club.

“And she said yes, so her project is going to be that,” she said. “So it’s just, honestly, an amazing, collaborative story of these two young people who didn’t even talk to one another, who had been in the same Girl Scout troop for 15 years and are now working together to build this for the community.”

Randle hopes to launch the Soul Buddies therapy club in the fall.

SUPPORT SOUL HAVEN RANCH

In March, Susan Nastasi officially launched a program that allows tourists and local residents to learn more about Winter Garden’s history and take a one-hour stroll on the West Orange Trail alongside a miniature horse.

Anyone can sign up for the experience, titled “My Time with the Minnies,” by logging into the Airbnb app or website, clicking on the “Experiences” tab and typing in “Winter Garden.”

“You come here and you choose a miniature horse, you get to groom that horse, and we teach you a little about horsemanship, and then we go out onto the West Orange Trail and we go out into the butterfly garden, and I tell people a little bit about what’s going on in Winter Garden and point out some historical landmarks,” Nastasi said.

“So far, I’ve had about 85 people from all over the world come through here.”

“I’ve got lots of people (who) are interested in it. And we’re hoping to get the horses on campus at some point ... to provide stress relief during finals and stuff. So not only will it help students be involved within the community, but it also will benefit students who aren’t actually in the club.”

Nastasi said they plan to have the club meet weekly, with three weeks of the months dedicated to training and working directly with the horses and developing relationships, and one week reserved for visiting different facilities in the West Orange community with the miniature horses.

Wilkison’s miniature horse training facility, which she hopes to have completed in November, will provide space to facilitate all the training for the members of the future club.

“The miniature horse training facility will not only help desensitize and train the mini horses, but it’ll help provide a dedicated space

for people aspiring to get their certification to become a handler through Pet Partners,” Wilkison said. The facility will let them have their own space to work with the animals and learn how to train them so that they can be taken into indoor spaces, like nursing homes or hospitals. … Horses get spooked easily, and a lot of different things could startle them and they freak out, but you can’t have that when you bring them around other people. So you have to desensitize them. And this facility will have these different stations and obstacles and allow Soul Buddies club members to work with the horses one-on-one.”

Wilkison said she will be working with local community businesses to see if they are willing to donate any of the materials she’ll need to complete the project.

She then will fundraise to cover any material or construction expenses not already funded by selling tickets to the community inviting them to spend time with the horses.

West Orange-area seniors named National Merit Scholars ERIC GUTIERREZ STAFF WRITER

E

arning the status of National Merit Scholar is no simple task.

It begins during a student’s junior year, when they take the PSAT/NMSQT test, which serves as an initial screening program of the National Merit Scholarship competition. Students who score the highest in each state are named semifinalists. Of the 16,000 semifinalists for this year’s competition, 15,000 advanced to the finalist level.

From there, 7,600 finalists earn the title of Merit Scholar, and receive a $2,500 scholarship.

Of the 7,600 students who earned the title of Merit Scholar, three attend West Orangearea schools. Those students are Jonathan Richardson, of Foundation Academy; Griffin Willman, of Windermere High; and George Braxton Tomecek, of West Orange High.

Richardson, 18, is the first Foundation Academy senior to earn the title of National Merit Scholar. He will be attending the University of Alabama to study law. He said he’s interested in studying law because he wants to help people and make a difference.

“I’ve always had an interest in politics and government,” Richardson said. “I see a lot of changes in the political world and a lot of changes in the political sphere, and I think that there needs to be strong leaders. … Not only do I have an interest (in that), but I also have a desire to make a difference.”

Richardson added that he’s a particularly interest in practicing constitutional law. He said his interest in government and politics began at an early age and was sparked by his dentist.

“When I was about 8 years old, I really didn’t know what government and politics were about, but my former dentist … actually ran for Senate in Florida,” Richardson said. “He won, and my family and GRIFFIN WILLMAN

“I think I want to go to med school, but (my options are) kind of open,” Willman said. “My dream job would be like an anesthesiologist, but that can always totally

“A year and a half ago, I would have told you there’s one school in the country I’m not going to, and it would have been (the University of) Alabama,” Richardson said with a laugh.

Willman is a Boy Scout and currently working toward earning the rank of Eagle Scout. He performs on violin in the school orchestra and the Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra. “Ideally, I want to work for myself and be self-made at the end of the day,” Tomecek said. “(I want) to just be able to retire early and (do) a humanitarian-type thing where you go and help the less fortunate. ... I don’t necessarily know that I have a specific dream job; more so an end goal … to be in a position to help others.”

During his years at West Orange, Tomecek has been involved in a number of clubs and organizations. He’s the president of the National Honor Society, AP Ambassadors and Cornell Club. He’s the treasurer of InterFSYO (Florida Symphony Youth Orchestra) … and I just love getting to play music.”

In addition to the Merit Scholarship, because Willman will be staying in-state to attend college, he also will be getting the Bright Futures Scholarship. With the Merit Scholarship and Bright Futures, most of his college expenses will be covered.

“I was pretty happy about it,”

“Everybody, obviously, has challenges, but I come from a very fortunate family,” Tomecek said. “Overall, (I) had just a very fortunate life, and to be able to help people that, maybe, weren’t in that same position or are going through a lot more than I’m going through … it’s just extremely fulfilling. It makes you feel good.”

Willman said his selection as a National Merit Scholar. “It’s just comforting to know that I won’t have to worry about paying for school. … I’m ready to get started with college. It will be more fun than high school, and I’m just excited for the course work that I’m going to be able to do because it’s going to be more directed toward what I really want to study and what I want to focus on.”

Disney magic inspires Accordino GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR

J

oey Accordino — who was born premature at 26 weeks weighing two pounds and diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 at birth — has never had it easy.

The hereditary genetic disorder, which affects one in every 3,000 people, causes benign tumors to develop throughout a person’s nervous system.

As a result, Accordino, now 23, has had 13 brain surgeries since he was 2 years old. And the Independence resident currently lives with 10 tumors in his brain and several more throughout his body.

“They can't be removed because of where they're located,” he said of the tumors. “If they were to take them out, they would kill me. They're in the middle of my brain, so they would have to literally dissect my brain. And then I have at least 20 others throughout my body. I have some on my arms, one on my foot, and now I have one by my spine.”

ANOTHER TUMOR

The Chicago native discovered a new tumor near his spine just three weeks ago, when he woke up unable to breathe or feel his arms or legs. He went to an emergency room in his hometown.

“That's when I found out I had a tumor in my spine,” Accordino said. “Right now, the tumor isn’t touching my spine, but I'll have to get an MRI more often now. They were going to take it out, but then they said if it's not causing any pain to not worry about it.”

Sometimes, his many tumors cause him pain or physical discomfort. And there are days when he might wake up with sudden back pain or a severe headache, he said. He tends to get headaches quite often because of his brain tumors, but the worst are the migraines that make it impossible for him to function.

Ibuprofen usually helps, to some degree, but, unfortunately, the typical medications used to treat migraines — some of which are caused by the Double VP

Shunt inserted in his brain when he was two — simply do not work.

“I literally can't do anything at all when I have a migraine,” he said. “With my disorder and everything, it's a little different. ... When I'm at the hospital, and I have an extreme headache, nothing helps. They've tried everything and nothing works, besides just waiting.”

HANDLING ANXIETY

Despite the challenges Accordino faces on a daily basis because of his condition, he’s never one to complain and is known for his positive and cheerful demeanor. However, he recently began struggling with anxiety.

“Because of NF, I have extreme anxiety,” Accordino said. “I don't take anything for it, but when my anxiety kicks in, it's bad. I break down. And I'm not the kind of person to be sad. I'm always positive and happy. But when my anxiety comes in, I just want to be away from everyone because I don't want to promote sadness.

I always want to promote happiness.”

became worse after his most recent surgery, which took place during his senior year of high school and almost led to his death because of a mistake that was made during the procedure. After visiting another doctor at a different hospital, he was informed if he hadn't arrived at that hospital within two days, he would have died.

During the recovery period after that surgery, he was hospitalized for six months and had to relearn how to speak, walk and use the bathroom. He still lives with the fear that one of his doctors may miss something and the anxiety that, one day, one of his tumors may turn into cancer.

“You never know; doctors can miss things, sometimes,” he said.

“And I should know, because I almost died because of it. But most NF patients, even people I've known, usually die from cancer. Any of my tumors at any moment can turn into cancer.

And you definitely hear about that a lot, you know? You hear she died from cancer, or he died from cancer — it's always cancer. You never hear anything else.”

HAPPY PLACE

HOW TO HELP Joey Accordino currently has about $60,000 in medical bills. His most recent medical emergency on April 9 resulted in him being rushed to the ER after experiencing trouble breathing. The following morning, he returned to the ER because of feeling numbness in his arms and legs.

He later flew home to Chicago and discovered he had a tumor near his spine. Accordino is asking anyone willing to help to donate to his Gofundme campaign, which can be found at gf.me/b3y2q.

Regardless of the health risks he contends with every day, Accordino remains happy and tries to live his life to the fullest.

He credits his support system of family and friends, the 80,000 songs on his phone, and Mickey Mouse as his reasons for remaining so positive. In fact, his decision to move to Central Florida from Chicago came when he was

hired by the happiest place on Earth: Disney World. He eventually grew bored of the routine of the job and feared Disney would lose the magic it always held for him if he didn’t leave. He quit and took a job as a server at a local Buffalo Wild Wings, where he currently works.

“It got to the point where it started losing its magic for me,” he said. “And I thought, well I don't want to feel this way; I want the magic to go on forever. I love Disney; I absolutely love it to death. I would live in Magic Kingdom if I could. It's my happy place."

As an annual pass holder who resides only eight minutes from the theme park, he still goes to Disney whenever his schedule allows — or when he wakes up and feels the need go to his “happy place” to keep smiling.

“Keeping sane and keeping calm is the biggest challenge for me,” he said. “While I'm in a hospital, I smile through it all, no matter what, and no matter how much pain I may be in. I remember a doctor came in once and asked, ‘How are you laughing and smiling if you're in so much pain?’

But I mean, why would you want to live your life in misery when you can just live happy? I mean, I'm still alive, so why not smile?”

WHAT IS NF1?

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 is a hereditary disorder caused by a genetic mutation that affects one in every 3,000 people. It is characterized by several symptoms, including tumor growths throughout the nervous system. NF1 also causes skin discolorations, benign growths on the colored part of the eye, skeletal abnormalities, hydrocephalus, and learning disabilities, which affects about 50% of people with NF1. It can also lead to a higher risk of developing certain cancers and can lead to other complications, such as high blood pressure, attention disorders, seizures and high blood pressure. Life expectancy for most people diagnosed with NF1 is normal, but about 10% may develop a life-threatening complication, such as cancer, according to the Child Neurology Foundation. There is no cure for neurofibromatosis.

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month

I

n 1927, the month was designated Better Hearing and Speech Month to raise awareness about the causes and treatments of hearing loss and speech impediments.

Then in May 1986, President Ronald Reagan issued a formal proclamation designating May as the official month to “heighten public awareness.”

In the year 1986, there was an estimated 20 million Americans with hearing loss. Today, 20% of Americans (about 48 million people) report some degree of hearing loss. Sixty percent of the people with hearing loss are either in the work force or in educational settings. Two to three of every 1,000 children have some degree of hearing loss. Thirty school children per 1,000 have hearing loss. One in five teenagers experience some degree of hearing loss, of which 80% is caused by loud noise. No surprise, with the cumulated effects from amplified music, sound systems at home and in the theaters and the growing use of personal listening devises that can blow your hearing away. About 2.3 million veterans have or have been treated for hearing-related issues.

Hearing loss is one of the most commonly unaddressed health conditions in America today, even though it ranks with arthritis, high blood pressure and heart disease.

Hearing loss impacts a person’s quality of life. It has been linked to stress, depression, loneliness, reduced job performance, and a reduction in physical and mental health.

Furthermore, hearing loss is not a one-way street; it also affects relationships with family members, close friends and co-workers who also are experiencing life-altering situations by being involved with someone with hearing loss. This can and will have an adverse effect — especially on close relationships such as husband and wife. The closer the relationship, the greater the effect is; just ask my wife. In June, it will be 50-plus years since my wife made the choice to join hands with a hearing-impaired mate, walking hand-in-hand on the journey with hearing loss, who has met the challenge and has been an

inspiration to all during our walk through the valleys and over the mountain tops.

Why did I write this? To create awareness. To help the public recognize that hearing loss is a major health issue, to become educated on the signs and symptoms. I wouldn’t be sitting here today if it wasn’t for my boss when I was first starting out in my career. He pulled me aside and, from his observation of how I was responding to others, suggested I should have my hearing checked. I did, and I was fitted with my first hearing aid — all because he knew the signs and symptoms of hearing loss.

That is why I feel it is so important to become educated on the signs and symptoms, and why it is vital in not only protecting one’s own hearing before it gets worse but also for family members, friends or co-workers to understand how to help the person with hearing loss recognize he or she has hearing loss, and the importance of having his or her hearing tested, and also understand the kinds of problems related to hearing loss and how to work through them.

Those with hearing loss live within the hearing community, and when hearing aids are not enough, they can experience feelings of isolation. What is out there to bridge the gap? What is out there to help recognize the signs and symptoms of hearing loss? To emphasize the importance of getting hearing tested?

The most simple way to find answers is to go to the computer and type in “signs and symptoms of hearing loss” and check websites such as HLAA.org. The Hearing Loss Association of America is the nation’s foremost membership and advocacy organization for people with hearing loss with chapters in 38 states.

Hearing loss is not just a one month issue. It’s 24/365 issue, and what better time to recognize and put more emphasis on the value of bringing to light the effects that the invisible condition has on people lives.

Chronic Tacos hopes to become habit-forming Restaurant Row’s newest Cali-Mex restaurant opened its doors in late April.

A new option for Taco Tuesdays has opened on Restaurant Row in Dr Phillips.

Chronic Tacos opened the doors to its first Orlando location at 7541 W. Sand Lake Road in late April. The California-based taco chain serves Cali-Mex cuisine in a fast-casual setting. Each menu item can be individually tailored to a customer’s taste. From tacos and tostadas to burritos and even breakfast items, the menu at Chronic Tacos is sure to satisfy any craving for Mexican food.

Winter Garden resident Pat Becherer, 31, is the owner of Chronic Tacos in Dr. Phillips. The first-time restaurant owner said although he doesn’t consider himself a chef, he liked the Chronic Tacos brand so much he decided to bring the franchise to the area.

“I’m not a culinary master by any means,” Becherer said. “I don’t come up with menus. I don’t come up with graphics and logos and store layouts. With a franchise, that’s a big part of what you’re getting — what they provide. I definitely needed that stuff, but I needed it from somebody that had my best interest in mind.”

Becherer said one of the things that makes Chronic Tacos unique is the attention it gives to the food.

He said much of the cooking and pre-work for the food is handled in-house as opposed to selling pre-prepared menu items. “(With) other brands, so much of their product comes precooked in a bag, (and) all they do is heat it up,” Becherer said. “We have a whole plethora of proteins,

After choosing a protein, customers can choose to add from a selection of different toppings, like salsas, beans, cheeses, lettuce, cabbage and other toppings.

One of the menu’s made-toorder items is also one of Becherer’s favorites: the beer-battered, baja fish taco. He wasn’t always a fan of fish, but the fish taco at Chronic Tacos completely changed his perspective, he said.

“It is the best thing on the menu. It has literally changed my perspective of fish on anything — period,” Becherer said. “I was never a fish person prior to that, and having tried with this brand (Chronic Tacos) has changed my perspective.”

Another menu item that gets extra time and attention to prepare is the roast pork, or carnitas, Becherer said. “(The) carnitas are probably … one of the best examples of how we do things — in a sense — the correct way, which is the long way,” Becherer said. “We trim it up, we marinate it overnight that we make, and it goes in the oven for three hours, literally, until it falls apart. And it gets topped off with a Mexican cola, so that real sugar caramelizes on it.”

Once it secures a license to do so, Chronic Tacos will begin serving beer, Becherer said.

Windermere student a finalist for Jimmy Awards reporter Junior Sage Croft also is a mixed-martial artist, theater enthusiast and aspiring filmmaker.

Windermere High junior Sage Croft’s passion for film and storytelling started off in an unlikely setting: a fighting workshop.

“I was at a workshop at an MMA convention, and it was a … fightchoreography workshop,” he said.

“The director who was running it pulled me aside afterward and said … ‘You really have some skills. I’m actually shooting a movie, and I have an audition next week. How would you like to come out and try it?’ I was like, ‘That would be amazing.’ So I came in, I auditioned, I got the part and … I fell in love with that. I was like, ‘Wow, film is really for me.’”

Croft, 17, is a theater enthusiast, mixed-martial artist, aspiring filmmaker and a broadcast journalist who does the daily news report at Windermere High. He is also one of the top 10 finalists to be selected as a student reporter for The Jimmy Awards.

“I’ve been involved with theater and film the last few years,” Croft said. “I’m actually a director myself, and as I’ve been exploring more media in the industry, I’ve become a broadcast journalist.”

The Jimmy Awards, also known as the National High School Musical Theatre Awards, is an annual awards ceremony dedicated to excellence in musical theater at the high-school level. The program impacts more than 100,000 students from schools throughout the country. Two awards are given every year: an award for best performance by an actor and an award for best performance by an actress. Each year, more than 40 theater programs across the country send two students — a best actor and a best actress — to the awards ceremony in New York City.

“The Jimmy Awards is the culmination of all high-school theater,” Croft said. “It’s where all the most talented youths gather in one spot and get to meet, work with and interact with some of the highest-level people on Broadway. They’re working with industry professionals, they’re taking

workshops (and) they’re meeting some of their fellow artists from around the country.”

Additionally, theaters involved with The Jimmy Awards each select a student to compete to be a student reporter for the awards ceremony. After being selected as a student reporter for the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts’ Applause Awards — a local ceremony that celebrates Central Florida high school thespians — he was submitted as a reporter for The Jimmy Awards.

“Each theater sends on a reporter to The Jimmy Awards to compete to become a student reporter for that,” Croft said. “I was selected as a student reporter for the Applause Awards and (was) submitted (as a student reporter) for The Jimmy Awards.”

Student reporters for The Jimmy Awards get a real-world experience of working in the journalism industry. They conduct Red Carpet interviews, create promotional videos and run social media, Croft said.

“It’s absolutely an incredible opportunity,” Croft said. “I’m very, very excited about it. The Jimmy Awards has always been something I’ve dreamed about.”

competition, each finalist had to create a video where they talk about themselves and why they should be selected to report on The Jimmy Awards. Those videos are posted on The Jimmy Awards website, and the finalists have to get others to view, like and share their video on Facebook, Croft said.

“Currently, they have each finalist’s (video) on Facebook,” he said. “So people need to go on their Facebook and … go to my video. You can view it, like it, comment, share it — anything you can do to get more interactions with it. They base a lot of the selection on Facebook metrics, to a degree.”

Croft’s work as a director already has earned him recognition at the national level. Last year, he co-directed a video with his girlfriend, Molly Smith, who attends Monteverde Academy, called “Dear America.” The video is about recent tragedies involving gun violence across the country, and it won the award for Best Live-Action Film at the Student Television Network’s 2018-19 Film Excellence awards.

“I love being an actor, I love directing, and I’ve been exploring broadcast journalism now just to explore every part of media I possibly can,” he said. “I love telling stories, and I think it’s important for everyone (to tell their story) because I think everyone has their own story to tell. … I think it’s important to tell the stories that people need to hear.”

HENRY W. “HANK” SINES DIED SUNDAY, MAY 5, 2019.

It’s with great sadness that the family of Henry Wilson “Hank” Sines announces his passing at the age of 73 on Sunday, May 5, 2019, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Henry was born and raised in Montpelier, Ohio. His parents were Volney P. Sines and Elva (Gonter) Sines. After graduation from Montpelier High School, he went on to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Business degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He was immediately hired by an international accounting firm in Dayton, Ohio, and soon received his CPA accreditation. His career was postponed while he proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, serving a tour in Vietnam.

Mr. Sines moved his family to Florida in 1973 and started his own successful accounting firm in Winter Garden the following year.

He recently retired from Sines, Blakeslee, Madyda.

Hank always enjoyed sports of all kinds, and after moving to Flor-

ida, he became a huge Gator fan.

He was a faithful member of the First United Methodist Church, Winter Garden, serving as finance chairman for many years, working with youth, going on mission trips and participating in United Methodist Men and Sunday School.

Mr. Sines also served on the Community Redevelopment Advisory Board, the West Orange Healthcare Foundation, West Orange Scholarship Foundation and many more.

Hank is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Nancy (Chrisman); three loving children, Kirk

Dr. Phillips baseball took home the Class 9A, District 4 title in a strong 9-3 win over Boone Friday, May 10. For the Panthers, CJ Cantwell went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while Diego Garcia and Brandon fields each added two-run homers of their own. The win pushes the Panthers into the state playoffs, where they hosted Olympia in the regional quarterfinal at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, after press time.

In Windermere’s district title-clinching 6-1 win over celebration Friday, May 10, Wolverines pitcher Bryce Hubbart threw for six strong innings, only allowing five hits while striking out seven. At the plate, Carson Crossley was a perfect 2-for-2 with three-RBI to help push the Wolverines to their second consecutive title in the program’s second year of existence.

On Friday, May 10, Windermere senior Dante Love announced he would be signing his Letter of Intent to continue his basketball playing career at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg. The 6-foot1-inch guard finished the 2018-2019 season for Windermere with an average of 12 points per game.

He also picked up 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game.

aking up at 6 a.m. as a high-school student is daunting, but on the morning of July 25, 2018, it wasn’t early enough.

That week, during his stay at Northwestern University in Chicago, Brandon Fields’ schedule

was like that of a big leaguer.

He woke up, ate breakfast and then got in some practice at 8 a.m. before getting in a few workouts. But there was one thing that made that day even more special — a trip to Wrigley Field to participate in batting practice in the cages.

“Walking through the tunnels — where the players walk

through — it was like, ‘Wow, this is what it feels like to be a big leaguer,’” Fields said. “Everything was big league from the time we got to the stadium. It was a kid’s dream; it was surreal; I’ve always dreamt of playing in a big-league stadium.”

That week was a part of his time training with USA Baseball, but it wasn’t the last. The Dr. Phillips outfielder — and University of South Carolina commit — was one of 80 high-school students from around the country selected to participate in the Prospect SEE PDP PAGE 13

In Windermere Prep’s 4-3 loss in a marathon 15-inning game against Trinity Prep in the Class 4A, District 3 tournament, junior Pablo Delgado racked up three hits of his own. Meanwhile, on the mound for the Lakers, Joe Lees went eight strong innings without giving up an earned run.

In a shootout with powerhouse Gulliver Prep, the Titans fell three goals short of taking back-to-back titles.

By the time the final whistle had been blown, the Olympia boys water polo team found themselves on a side they had only experienced once all season.

After four quarters of play in the FHSAA state-title game Saturday, May 11, at Boca Raton High

School, the scoreboard read 16-14 in favor of Gulliver Prep.

The loss was disheartening, to say the least, and it left the Titans discombobulated — although there were silver linings related to the season.

How long have you been playing baseball?

It was when I was about 4, and I don’t really remember what made it so that I got interested then. But whatever it was just stuck.

What’s been your favorite part about playing Little League baseball?

I like just how baseball is different than other sports.

Instead of going back and forth and scoring, I like how you get to do something new each time.

What’s your favorite thing about playing pitcher and outfielder?

In outfield, I just like how if there is a play out there you have to do everything you can to get it. And pitcher, I like how you’re a part of every play, and if you mess up, you have another opportunity right away. Mostly I pitch more.

What is the most challenging aspect when it comes to pitching?

Trying to throw a strike

without the hitter being able to hit it, so trying to make sure you hit the spot.

Do you have any pitches that you like to throw?

I’m working on kind of a curveball, but my fastballs are my primary pitches, and then I have a changeup.

What would you say is some of the best advice you’ve been given when it comes to playing baseball?

Someone told me once — it was a while ago — that you shouldn’t just try to do too much. If you just don’t try to hit a home run every time, then it’s going to come naturally.

What’s been the biggest highlight moment for you when it comes to playing baseball?

It’s not like a specific moment, but if I have a really good game, and I have a lot of strikeouts or I’m throwing the ball well, those I will remember and I think back to them when I’m trying to do the same thing (again).

Do you have a favorite baseball team /player you enjoy watching?

I like the (Detroit) Tigers and Miguel Cabrera. My dad is from Michigan, so I kind of just followed what he liked.

How is this season going for you so far?

For me, it’s been good — I think it’s one of my better seasons.

had, and we didn’t execute everything that we are capable of,” said head coach Stephanie Johnson Possell. “A silver medal is a pretty fantastic thing for a school without a pool. To have four medals in four years is pretty amazing, and we have a lot of positive things that happened over the year.”

In the regular season, the Titans had split the series with Gulliver — going 1-1 — but things seemed to get away late.

Despite getting three goals apiece from Touma Mack, Alec Johnson and Danny Cruz — along with two from Luke Carey — in the game, going into the fourth quarter the Titans (29-2) and Raiders (28-1) were knotted up at 13-13. Then, the Raiders went up two goals — and there was no rally from the Titans who were looking to make it back-to-back state titles.

“Our kids played hard — they played hard the entire game,” Johnson Possell said. “They really gave it 100%, and you know they are kids, and sometimes, you make mistakes.

There’s not one thing that you can say, ‘If this had been different, we would have been able to do that.’”

But the weekend wasn’t a total loss for Olympia. The Titans played an absolute barn-burner in the semifinal the day before against another state power in St. Thomas Aquinas.

In that game, the Titans were pushed to their limits — taking St. Thomas Aquinas into overtime before a game-winning goal from Mack pushed Olympia to the championship game.

It was an impressive showing, especially given that Olympia — like the other competitors — had a long, two-week gap between their regional final and the state

PDP selects local players CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

With the high quality baseball offered in the West Orange area, Fields wasn’t the only local player selected. Windermere High pitcher and FSU commit Carson Montgomery also was chosen for the newly designed league.

For those unfamiliar with the PDP, it’s a joint effort between MLB and USA Baseball to do exactly as the name implies: Develop young high-school players and get them ready for the big leagues.

It’s a league that — from midJune through early-July — will offer some of the top baseball players in the country a chance to show what they can do under the guidance of future MLB Hall of Famers such as Derek Jeter and current Hall of Famers Chipper Jones and Barry Larkin. It’s the chance of a lifetime.

“I’m pretty excited — I may get some butterflies talking to those guys,” Montgomery said.

“They’ve been through a lot, and they definitely know the game better than I do, and I’m looking forward to gaining some knowledge just through them. I get to spend three weeks with them — in the clubhouse, in the room, on the field — so really I can learn some life lessons and baseball lessons.”

Fields found out about his selection in an email from Matt Blood, former director of baseball at USA Baseball, just before the regular season started for Dr. Phillips.

“First off, it was an honor, and I’m thankful,” Fields said. “It’s a great opportunity for me to play in the PDP — it’s a high level of competition to be able to play with the top 80 kids in America.”

The process of being selected to the team was a bit different for Fields and Montgomery.

In Montgomery’s case, he had done some playing with USA Baseball in the past, but it was his recent play on the mound that really intrigued USA Baseball scouts. They invited him to that same week of training that Fields went to last year, but Montgomery wasn’t able to make it.

Like Fields, Montgomery also will get a taste of what it’s like to be a big league player this upcoming summer. And although baseball will be a focal point of the summer camp, there’s also learning the lifestyle of a big leaguer off the field — learning how to do simple things such as cook and take care of one’s self.

“A lot of kids get drafted out of high school, and they don’t know anything about living on their own,” Montgomery said. “Some kids get overwhelmed going into Major League Baseball. … So I think this is kind of a model for that.

“That’s definitely been a concern for my parents also, if I were to able be in that situation — they want to know that I’m in good hands and that I’m mature enough to take care of myself,” he said. “It will definitely mature me and give me a little bit of a feel for what that’s like.”

Olympia stumbles in 8-2 loss to Lake Brantley in district final

A

tough afternoon on the baseball diamond saw Olympia take a tumble against Lake Brantley in an 8-2 loss in the Class 9A, District 3 title game Friday, May 10.

Through the first four innings the bats for the Titans (20-6) remained quiet, while the Patriots (21-6) managed to build a 4-0 lead. The Titans managed to bring in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth — their only runs of the game.

Despite the loss, just by making the district final, the Titans sealed a place in the state tournament They traveled to Dr. Phillips to take on the Panthers at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, after press time.

MAY 11, 1972 Shawnee Airlines operated commuter planes between the business markets of Florida in the 1960s and ’70s, and for a few years, it ran an air shuttle between Maguire Airport, in Ocoee, to Walt Disney World property.

The small planes took off from Maguire at 10:15 a.m. and returned around 5:30 p.m., giving Disney visitors a full day at the theme park for the low price of $9.50 for adults and $7 for children.

The company advertised in the May 11, 1972, issue of The Winter Garden Times that it was the “fastest and shortest route to the Magic Kingdom.”

Winter Garden postmaster Edgar M. Henderson (1916-2015) donated this photo of Ina Henderson, his wife, in 2013.

Ina Henderson was a first-grade teacher at Winter Garden Elementary School, which once stood on South Main Street. The license plate on the car is dated 1944, which is the year Ina Henderson began teaching at the school. She retired in 1970 after 26 years and died in 1994.
