put their iconic UFO and rocket adorned store off Fairbanks Avenue up for sale. It’s a move that would allow Skycraft to open a new location just down the street within its already existing 17,000-squarefoot warehouse at 700 Harold Ave. behind 4 Rivers Smokehouse.

President and majority owner Allen Fiedler said it’s time to move from the old store his father built in 1978. Moving into the warehouse would allow the business to have more supplies in stock, because the current store only has about 6,000 square feet of space in comparison, he said.

“The value of the property had increased enough that I think it’s time to move, and we’re known well enough I think that the majority of people will follow us,” Fiedler said. “In the end we hope it helps, because we’re going to be able to display and sell — available for them to see — a lot more material that we have stored that’s too large to bring over.”

As of Tuesday, May 7, the Skycraft property and surrounding four residential lots are listed for $5.5 million by Cushman & Wakefield. Fiedler said construction along Interstate 4 played a major role in the decision to sell and move to a space with more room.

Ever since the reconfiguration of the Fairbanks Avenue ramps, the store has seen a major decrease in sales, he said.

“It just dropped dramatically overnight the day they did that,” Fiedler said. “It’s not just us — the

traffic in general along Fairbanks has been really affected by it. We monitor how many sales there are per day. … It’s dropped at least 35% I would say.”

As for the store’s signature rockets and UFO, Fiedler said the objects aren’t allowed on top of a building because of city codes — the old Skycraft store was grandfathered in.

Fiedler’s son and lead manager Keith Fiedler said the store still will try to keep the iconic decorative aircraft and implement them in some way.

“We’re definitely hoping we can bring the rockets and the saucer with us,” he said. “Everybody always says, ‘Oh, that place with

the flying saucer on top and the rockets.’ We’re hoping to be able to do that.”

A quick look around inside the store and your eyes are likely to spot more than a few unusual and interesting trinkets collected over the years. Shillelagh tank fired guided missiles hang from the ceiling, and there’s even a few NASA artifacts — such as space shuttle tiles and a launch control panel that was used for Titan IIIC and IV. “We were regulars over there at the auctions, and we bought tons of stuff, including some space shuttle things,” Allen Fiedler said. “(NASA) was saying ‘You know, only astronauts in general have these things, so be glad you got it.’

They quit selling that kind of thing once the shuttle program took off.”

The sale would mark an exciting new chapter for Skycraft, with his son taking over and applying his own savvy to the business, Allen Fiedler said.

“I want to continue the legacy — it’ll be a third-generation business with him running it, so my plan once I’ve sold the property is to let the managers purchase the company,” Allen Fiedler said.

“I’m real thrilled for my son and the managers — they’ve been loyal employees for about 30 years,” he said. “I’m glad to pass it on. I know my sister and brother-in-law are also. I think they’ll be very successful.”

Farmers’ market celebrates 40th These days, the Winter Park Farmers’ Market draws thousands of locals and tourists alike — a far cry from its humble beginnings on a gravel parking lot.

State bill would make texting while driving a primary offense The bill awaits Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature after the state House of Representatives voted in support of it.

A bill that would make texting while driving a primary offense is one signature away from becoming Florida law.

Both chambers of the state Legislature have voted overwhelmingly in favor of bills that address distracted driving. The Senate voted April 25 to approve Senate Bill 76, which passed with a 33-5 vote. Days later, on April 29, the House of Representatives voted to approve House Bill 107 with a 108-7 vote. HB 107 was co-sponsored by Reps. Jackie Toledo and Emily Slosberg.

“We know that people are texting (while driving),” Winter Park Police Chief Michael Deal said. “I see that all the time. … To me, it seems like eight out of 10 times, somebody is on their phone.”

Although texting while driving is already illegal in Florida, it’s only a secondary offense. That means an officer can only ticket someone for texting while driving if the person has been pulled over for something else, such as speeding or running a stoplight.

If approved, the new law would make texting while driving a primary offense, meaning an officer

would be able to pull someone over and give them a citation for texting while driving alone.

“Currently, it’s a secondary offense, so the police would have to witness a primary violation (such as) speeding, running a stop sign, careless driving or something to stop somebody — they can’t stop somebody just because they see them texting while driving,” Deal said. “The problem (with the current law) is that those officers don’t always witness that primary violation when they see somebody texting (while driving).”

Those in violation would be issued a $30 fine on first offense, and the fine doubles to $60 on second offense. Those fines don’t include any court costs or additional fees. If approved, the new law would take effect July 1; however, officers won’t be issuing citations until Jan. 1, 2020.

Beginning Oct. 1, officers only will be giving out verbal or written warnings to those who violate the new law.

In addition to making texting while driving a primary offense, the bill also places restrictions on operating a cell phone while driving through a school zone or construction zone. The bill

makes school and construction zones “hands-free” areas, meaning it would be illegal to hold your phone while driving through these areas. A person would be permitted to talk on their phone while driving through these areas if they are doing so in a handsfree manner, such as talking via a speaker phone.

“Distracted driving does cause a lot of crashes,” Deal said. “There’s a lot of crashes — rear-end collisions and other types of crashes — where the driver was obviously distracted by some measure. But unless there’s a witness or the driver admits that they were texting … you’re not really ever going to know. Most people who are at fault in a crash aren’t going to sit there and say, ‘Yeah, I was texting on my phone and wasn’t paying attention.’ It just doesn’t happen that way.”

The bill does not affect talking on the phone while driving in areas outside of school or construction zones. Additionally, individuals who are operating a phone while driving but for reasons such as navigation, to report a crime or to receive safety-related information, would not be in violation.

“It’s a good bill,” Deal said. “It’s going to save lives. It’s going to reduce injuries and crashes. It’s a good thing for everybody.”

Lisa Griffin remembers working the first Winter Park Farmers Markets with her mother, the then-owner of The Lemonade Stand business in the first years it opened. It was much different than it is today, according to the owner of the lemonade business.

“Thirty-three years, I’ve been doing it,” Griffin said. “It was just a gravel road parking lot; it isn’t like it is now. It was very small and quaint. Just a few customers, just a few vendors. Much different than what it is now. It was profitable but definitely what it isn’t today.”

Eventually, that gravel road parking lot was bricked over and changed into the bustling city market that thousands of residents and visitors travel frequent each weekend today.

On Saturday, May 18, the city of Winter Park will celebrate one of its oldest events with a 40th anniversary bash. Starting at 10 a.m., the city will have a special presentation during which vendors are awarded with acknowledgement and a token of appreciation. Winter Park mayors past and present also will be part of the event to recognize the market’s history.

The celebration will have a kids zone with face-painting along with a new dog fashion show where the best-looking canines will compete for special prizes. Through a series of discounts and specials, there also will be a series of door gifts and raffles provided by the event’s vendors.

Although there is no way to get a definite head count, the city is expecting more than 3,000 visitors to attend the event

throughout the day.

“It’s one of the oldest markets around,” said Ronnie Moore, events manager for the city of Winter Park. “We’re just trying to go back and enhance and bring some history from it to the table.”

Griffin said her parents business, which she eventually helped run with her mother, actually sold a mix of jams, jellies and lemonade. Eventually, the lemonade won out. Some of those years selling lemonade were tougher than others, but the business owner said the last 10 have been more than profitable.

“Winter Park at that time had a well-known name, but it wasn’t a tourist event,” she said. “Now today, it’s a tourist stop. We get busloads of people and lots of visitors from other countries. …

Back in the day, most everyone was from Winter Park that came to the market.”

Griffin eventually assumed full control of the lemonade stand and worked it with her children, as well. She has been to almost every market each year since those early days — minus a class graduation or two — and said it is somewhat of a tradition.

“I think it’s amazing something has lasted that long,” she said. “It’s amazing people have supported it for this long and that we’re all still able to do it.”

Third time’s the charm

I

t’s difficult for Ramona Anghel to describe how special this Mother’s Day is going to be. After all, it’s her first one as a mom.

After years of trying to have a child and multiple tragic disappointments, west Orlando couple Anghel and Ciprian Neagu welcomed their daughter, Eliana Andreea Anghel, into the world six weeks ago with the help of treatment and guidance from the Center for Reproductive Medicine in Winter Park.

It marks a joyous conclusion of a period during which the couple struggled to achieve their ultimate goal: having a child of their own.

That difficult journey began with an ectopic pregnancy in 2013.

“After trying for so many years, it was a surprise and a disappointment at the same time when it was ectopic,” Anghel said.

The couple made the decision to seek some help in 2016, meeting with Dr. Sejal Dharia Patel — a doctor of reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the Center for Reproductive Medicine.

After a series of tests, the couple were put on the path of in vitro fertilization — where an egg and sperm are combined outside of the body in the lab and an embryo is placed back inside the woman’s uterus.

To make the in vitro process a success, Anghel underwent a sixweek process of medications and injections to create the embryos.

She then underwent a six-week process to prepare the lining of the uterus to receive the embryo, taking both injections and pills of estrogen, followed by progesterone.

It’s wasn’t always easy, Anghel said, because the couple’s lives seemed to always revolve around the next shot.

when it was time for the progesterone, we would go in the bathroom, and he would give me the shot,” Anghel said. “There was some medications that you had to inject early in the morning and some at night, so everything revolved around that.”

“The dedication of patients with infertility and their drive to want to become parents is so inspiring,” Patel said. “I think that’s what makes us want to do what we do every day.”

Anghel’s first pregnancy through the in vitro process was unfortunately unsuccessful. The baby stopped growing at seven weeks in June 2017.

Patel said Anghel had a genetic mutation that made her more susceptible to blood clots, which

can block blood flow and potentially prevent a baby from growing.

This required Anghel to see a hematologist for yet more treatment to address the blood clot issue.

A couple of months after the first transfer pregnancy, the couple tried again, and Anghel got pregnant a second time. The pregnancy was revealed to be lifethreatening Dec. 26, 2017, while she was in Romania — she had yet another ectopic pregnancy and had left for Europe just before her next appointment with Patel.

“I ended up in the emergency room with internal bleeding — it was another ectopic,” Anghel said. “I didn’t know it was going on, so it was too late, and it ruptured. They had to do a surgery, and we lost the baby.”

For Anghel and Neagu, the third time was the charm. After a successful embryo transfer Aug. 1, 2018, the pregnancy was a happy,

healthy one.

Little Eliana was born March 29, 2019. She was named after Anghel’s father, Ilie, who died from cancer last September.

“She’s the missing piece from our lives,” Anghel said.

“It’s something I can’t explain,” Neagu said. “I can’t believe it.”

“Two years into this, you can imagine what they went through and how costly it was,” Patel said.

“Every time something happens, we go back to the drawing board, and we do 70 different tests to try and find a blood-clotting disorder. When you think of how this journey is, this has to be one of the toughest journeys. … This outcome is so priceless.”

Anghel said she knows it was difficult — how mentally, physically, emotionally and financially taxing it all was. But as she looks at her 6-week-old daughter, she also knows this: It was worth it.

“I would do it all over again,” Anghel said.

“In terms of lakefront review criteria, staff didn’t see any concerns as this home is presented,” Winter Park Senior Planner Allison McGillis said.

McGillis added a request to build a 4,258-square-foot home at 1204 N. Park Ave. on Lake Maitland had been tabled until the board’s June 4 meeting.

ORANGE AVENUE OVERLAY STEERING COMMITTEE

Winter Park Director of Planning and Community Development Bronce Stephenson informed the board the Winter Park City Commission will vote May 13 on a steering committee for the

Orange Avenue overlay district currently being pursued by the city.

Stephenson said the committee would represent input and expertise from across the community to help guide what Orange Avenue should look like as it is redeveloped.

“We would use it like we use other steering committees where we have large projects or large initiatives — to have a good sounding board and utilize the citizens we have in the community who hopefully represent a very different cross section to makes sure we have good input and a good product moving forward,” Stephenson said.

appointed by the mayor and four city commissioners, as well as a member from six of the city’s boards: the Transportation Advisory Board, the Economic Development Advisory Board, the Planning and Zoning Board, the Winter Park Visioning Committee, the Community Redevelopment Agency Advisory Board, and the Keep Winter Park Beautiful and Sustainable Advisory Board.

Members of the committee would make a recommendation on the overlay district language to the Planning and Zoning Board and the City Commission, discussing topics such as the history and past work/input on Orange Avenue, results of the public input process, place-making and overlay districts, neighborhoods nearby, small businesses, and transportation and connectivity, among other topics.

According to the May 13 City Commission agenda, the committee would meet at 5:30 p.m. every other Wednesday evening at the City Commission Chambers, with the first meeting taking

place May 29, pending approval by the City Commission, Stephenson said.

The meetings, running through the summer and into the fall, would be open to the public and public comment time would be allotted.

FAREWELL TO TWO BOARD MEMBERS

The Tuesday, May 7 meeting also marked the last time board members Sheila De Ciccio and Bob Hahn would cast their vote. The two of them reached their term limits.

Planning and Zoning Board members can serve a maximum of two three-year terms.

“We hate to lose the folks that we have, but there’s always opportunities to serve on boards and committees,” Stephenson said. “Thank you for your service.”

Mayor Steve Leary is set to appoint two new Planning and Zoning Board members at the May 13 City Commission meeting.

An annual tennis round robin tournament in Winter Park is supporting female tennis players at Rollins College — all while honoring one special alumna.

Local tennis players will take the courts in the 10th annual Nancy Reed Memorial Round Robin Tennis Tournament on Monday, May 13, at the Winter Park Tennis Center, with entry fees benefitting the Nancy Reed and Patricia Graham Endowed Scholarship for Women’s Tennis at Rollins College.

Kay Merrell, a member of the tennis center who organizes the event, said everyone who signs up will have a chance to play in the tournament, all while supporting the Rollins College women’s tennis team.

“There are many teams that play in the entire Central Florida area of different levels, and it’s a time for them all to come together,” Merrell said. “This enables everybody to come together and play and they really have fun; they really have a good time. Many of them still today remember Nancy.”

Born in Minneapolis on April 21, 1933, Reed started playing tennis at age 15 and went on to play at Rollins College.

After graduating in 1955 with a bachelor’s degree in biology, she taught from 1956 to 1974 at Western Jr. High School in Maryland and also earned her master’s degree in 1965 from George Washington University.

During the same span of time, Reed continued to develop into an internationally-known tennis player, ranking in the United States Tennis Association Top 25 from 1964 to 1970.

She also ranked No. 1 numerous times for USTA Women’s singles, USTA Women’s Doubles and International Tennis Federation singles.

In 1976, she moved back to Winter Park and continued to pursue her career in tennis — co-founding the Les Grandes Dames Senior Women’s Tennis circuit, working as the Rollins College women’s assistant and head tennis coach, and being named World Tennis Magazine’s Senior Women’s Player of the Year in 1986.

Reed won 96 Gold Balls — the award given to USTA National Champions — and was inducted into the Washington DC Hall of Fame, the Rollins College Sports Hall of Fame, the Florida Tennis Association Hall of Fame, the Central Florida Sports Hall of Fame and the ITA Women’s Hall of Fame.

She lived in Winter Park throughout the rest of her life, teaching tennis at what’s now the Winter Park Tennis Center. Merrell taught tennis alongside Reed for many years, and recalls her offering a class that taught all of the basics of tennis in just a single weekend.

“She had one big belief, and that was that everyone should have the opportunity and learn to play tennis,” Merrell said. “This was not just adults, it was kids, too — she and I taught a lot of kids in our kids program. She truly, truly believed that tennis was so important that everyone should learn to play and participate in it.”

Rollins College women’s tennis coach Bev Buckley also had a close relationship with Reed over many years. She remembers when Reed and her friend and tennis partner Patricia Graham first approached her about establishing a scholarship.

“We were friends and she approached me knowing she had cancer and she wanted to help our program,” Buckley said. “It was an

Leadership Winter Park class donates laptops Class XXIX acquired 20 laptops for the Welbourne Avenue Nursery & Kindergarten last month.

Leadership Winter Park Class XXIX is on the verge of graduation — but not without finishing one last project to benefit the next generation.

Class XXIX recently made a difference at the Welbourne Avenue Nursery & Kindergarten as it donated 20 laptops and a charging cart for students to use for lessons and taking tests.

The idea for the project came from Welbourne Avenue Nursery Executive Director Robynn Demar, after she noticed kindergartners weren’t doing as well as they could be on assessments for school readiness.

The kindergartners’ performance in assessments a couple years back was eye-opening, Miller said.

“The board saw it as a place that we could improve,” Miller said.

“One of the barriers that we discovered was that they don’t have computers at home that they can use, and they didn’t have computers at Welbourne to use — and a lot of preschools and kindergartens are starting to introduce intentional computer technology into the classrooms to teach students how to learn using technology. ... Robynn put together a proposal for the Leadership Winter Park class as one of their projects for the year.”

Manny Acosta, of Class XXIX, got things started as he reached out to some contacts at Microsoft, which had some representatives tour the nursery and learn about the needs for the school.

Microsoft presented Class XXIX with a project for the 20 laptops and charging cart, which would cost about $5,000.

The class reached out to local contacts for financial donations and also sought item donations for a silent auction at the Leadership Winter Park graduation ceremony that took place Thursday, May 9.

Class XXIX was able to raise the entire cost for the technology through sponsorships by April 18 — within the span of about a month after the project started.

Class XXIX member Dawn Braddy, who works for the Orange County Clerk of Courts, said it was an incredibly rewarding project.

“I was there when we actually delivered (the laptops) and saw the excitement on these little ones’ faces,” Braddy said. “That was pretty amazing. We all say that one of the best experiences about this whole process is the camaraderie and the collaboration and the groups of people that would have never interacted in each other’s life. Seeing every-

body and the excitement for us to be able to do something together for others in need has been truly just a blessing and amazing.”

The project to bring laptops to the Welbourne Avenue Nursery & Kindergarten was just one of several projects for Class XXIX. The class also partnered with the Center for Independent Living to build a ramp for a family that was no longer able to use the stairs to access their home. Another outing saw the class sort oranges at Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

“Through this class, we’ve learned a lot about Winter Park and about getting connected to the community,” Miller said.

“It’s not just learning how to be

a leader in the community, it’s about getting connected to the community.”

“The group really did come together to really want to make a change,” she said. “There’s so much more need in our community than we even realize. I think that was one of the biggest takeaways from Leadership Winter Park. There are so many ways that we can give back right in our backyard, right in our community.”

inter Park’s East Welbourne Avenue was packed with people and pups on Sunday, May 5, for Cocina 214’s seventh annual Running of the Chihuahuas.

Many pups were sporting sombreros and colorful outfits for the occasion, and more than 100 dogs competed in the races. All proceeds from the event went to the Winter Park Lost Pets and the Poodle and Pooch Rescue of Florida organizations.

he Crealdé School of Art has a number of studio artists and fellowship artists who create a variety of paintings, sculptures and other artistic designs each year.

More than 10 of the school’s studio and fellowship artists will display their paintings from May 10 to Aug. 3 as part of the Crealdé School’s “Emerge: Painting & Drawing Fellowship & Studio Artists” exhibit. There will be an opening reception at the school from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, May 10.

The school hosts a volunteer showcase each year; this year focuses on painting and drawing.

The school’s fellowship program and studio artist program have mentored an average of 25 students per year for decades.

“There’s no place like this,” said Barbara Tiffany, curator of exhibitions and painting and drawing program manager for the school.

“The volunteers, the teachers, and the students all get a show here.”

Mixed-media artist Deborah Umphrey, who specializes in acrylic and watercolor painting, has an affinity for animals and nature — and it’s clear in her work.

The artist is debuting her “Morning Hunt” piece at the Emerge exhibit, an ethereal painting of a landscape with barred owls resting above a reflective body of water. It’s the latest in a series of nature-focused paintings that include flamingoes, manatees, deer and other critters from the New Orleans native, who has been part of the school for years and helps teach the youth programs. Umphrey’s process involves sketching ideas that she then transfers to the canvas. Her pieces can take up to three weeks to finish.

“Morning Hunt’s” inspiration comes from Umphrey’s home in Winter Springs and her mornings watching owls peer back at her from a nearby creek. A common theme in her work is water and reverse images in its reflection, something that is both tricky and rewarding for Umphrey to convey.

“I like to paint upside down; it’s definitely a brain-teaser,” Umphrey said. “I go to sleep at night, and I think what I’m going to do. There’s times I actually get up (to paint).”

The inspiration for Joan Sanchez’s paintings, which will be on display Friday, is obvious. The painter has captured people and landscapes from Crealdé, from the outdoor garden to indoor craft-making.

The landscape paintings focus on Crealdé’s specific scenery, while the people paintings capture instructors in mid-motion while working on their craft.

He uses lighting in particular to capture a moment and feeling for each of his paintings. A piece depicting a Crealdé metalworks instructor has the man lit from behind as he is mid-swing at the anvil.

It all comes from a place of love. Sanchez spent years in the United States military and returned from a combat zone in Afghanistan with anxiety and PTSD. He said that Crealdé helped him work through those feelings and now that he has become a studio artist, wishes to thank the school by painting its places and people.

“Everybody involved with the school is so committed to helping the community in many different ways,” he said. “I love these people here.”

The Hannibal Square Heritage Center has unveiled 17 new photographic portraits and living histories taken from their most senior residents — now in their 80s and 90s — who are natives or longtime residents of the African American west side Winter Park community. Like the “Sage Phase I” project that debuted with an exhibition to the public in 2012, “The Sage Project Phase II: Hannibal Square Elders Tell Their Stories” brings together the passions and documentary commitments of the team of Fairolyn H. Livingston, Mary Daniels and Peter Schreyer, all three of whom have been selected as Winter Park Influentials by Winter Park Magazine in recognition of their efforts to preserve and celebrate the people and places of the deeply rooted African American community of Hannibal Square in west Winter Park. Derek Trumpp always has been fond of the Casa Feliz Historic Home & Venue. The 36-year-old Bell Isle resident proposed to his then-girlfriend on the popular venue’s steps.

Still, Trumpp always hoped he would get the chance to see the building’s interior. That wish came true Thursday, May 2, when Trumpp received a new scholarship from both Casa Feliz and the University of Florida’s Graduate School of Architecture at CityLabOrlando at a graduation convocation.

The award was given in honor of James Gamble Rogers II, a renowned Winter Park architect who designed the Casa Feliz house. The architect, who worked for much of the 20th century, has created hundreds of designs. His son, emeritus board member of the Friends of Casa Feliz Jack Rogers III, presented Trumpp with the award.

“He’s got a lot of background in Central Florida but especially the Winter Park area,”said Susan Omoto, executive director of Friends of Casa Feliz. “We were wondering what could we do that would sort of cement (Roger’s) legacy because he was not a full-

time student of architecture. His study was self-directed while he worked on a tenure apprenticeship. We thought it was a great opportunity to do something educational.”

Trumpp said he didn’t even know he had won until a few days before the ceremony.

“I honestly didn’t know there was this award until a few days before I received it,” Trumpp said.

“My guess is I’ve done enough work in studio and tried to do quality work, and I’m guessing that was it.”

The James Gamble Rogers II scholarship, which amounts to $3,000, is for students entering their last year of architectural study and is chosen by CityLab faculty. The event came together quickly — Omoto said the decision to host the convocation at Casa Feliz was planned within a month.

Trumpp earned his undergraduate degree in 2006 at Kansas State University but said it didn’t allow him to become licensed as a registered architect in Florida.

He joined the CityLab program to pursue a master’s degree while staying close to his family.

He said the scholarship will assist him in taking the multiple architecture registration exams. “(I want to) be able to someday be able to sign and seal my own construction drawings,” he said. “It will open up some doors, hopefully, and I won’t be limited in what I can do because I don’t have a license.”

The Winter Park real estate duo recently helped sell a residence overlooking Lake Maitland for $7.25 million, the second largest sale in Winter Park.

It provided an elevation unique to homes on Lake Maitland.

“There’s a strip of homes along Lake Maitland that sit very high up,” Pinel said. “It was almost a brand-new home, hardly lived in. … It had gorgeous architecture with a Tuscan-style, Mediterranean feel.”

It’s not the first time Night and Pinel have sold a multi-million dollar home. The duo has been involved in seven out of the 10 highest-recorded residential sales in Winter Park history and have been involved in the topthree highest closed residential sales ranging from $7.1 million to $11 million.

Their biggest claim is bringing buyers to the $11 million sale of the 656 North Interlachen Ave. home in 2017, the most expensive sale in Winter Park history.

What’s more, that sale took only 10 days.

“Both of these sales — the $11 million and this one — were way, way under what the replacement costs would be for these properties,” Pinel said. “To buy it at $7.25 million is strong.”
