Property appraiser files libel lawsuit Orange County’s Rick Singh filed a libel lawsuit following allegations made against him during the 2016 election.

Citing several accusations that circulated during his re-election as Orange County Property Appraiser in 2016, Rick Singh has filed a libel lawsuit against two Political Action Committees.

During an April 25 press conference, Singh, accompanied by two attorneys, insisted allegations made against him during the election race last year were “maliciously untrue.”

Listed among the allegations made against Singh during the 2016 election was the accusation that Singh was arrested in 1988; that Singh changed his name to Rick for “nefarious purposes”; that a judgment was stated against Singh in 1993; and that there was a court order to pay a judgment against Singh, all of which Singh firmly denies.

Attorney Belvin Perry said the main intent of the lawsuit is to deter individuals from using negative campaign mailers and TV commercials to taint candidates’ reputations. Attorney Frank Kruppenbacher said the suit is the first of its kind in Florida and is necessary to fight against what he perceives as a

GABBY BAQUERO STAFF WRITER WINTER GARDEN As its name suggests, Romp n’ Roll is an indoor children’s playground set up as a fun gym — complete with art and music classes — for youngsters to enjoy.

With the opening of its first location in Florida in Winter Garden and a second location opening soon in St. Petersburg, families in West Orange now have the chance to learn why the Virginia-based franchise has been able to expand to 80 locations in three countries with such success.

The gym, which finished construction March 26 and opened a day later, is located in the Winter Garden Regional Shopping Center on West Colonial Drive under the ownership of Marie Simmons.

With 100 parents signing up as founding members, the interest has exceeded Simmons’ expectations.

“We have been extremely busy from the minute that door opened,” Simmons said. “It’s been great. The community has had a really good response to it and every person that has come in seems to love it, so we’re really happy at how things are going.”

Simmons thought the idea of an indoor children’s gym was a perfect fit in a state famous for its typical hot climate and rainy

periods. After visiting the corporate office in Virginia and a few conversations with the company executives, Simmons began searching for a centrally located property in West Orange with ample parking space.

“We love this area (Winter Garden), and we’re just a couple of minutes from Windermere, Ocoee and Clermont, but there’s nothing here for kids,” Simmons said.

“There’s a gymnastics studio and a skating rink, but other than that, there’s nothing here for kids.”

For Simmons, the initial incentive to open her own business came after she lost her husband in a motorcycle accident five years ago while she was six months pregnant. The tragedy resulted in a difficult emotional time for her, and she encountered many challenges as a single mom trying to balance parenthood and work.

“And then I went back to work after two years, and corporate America was not conducive to being a single mom — at all,” Simmons said. “There were nights when I would pick my son up from daycare and he would be the last one there, and I would just be heartbroken. Getting there at 5:59 — the minute before they close because you (have) to work and earn some money.”

“The kids don’t know that there’s a curriculum behind these classes; they just know that they are having a great time,” Simmons said. “We want it to be a carefree place for the moms and the children. We just want everybody to be happy — this is the happy place.”

Pizza Hut makes a move Ocoee records show a permit has been issued for a Starbucks ‘alteration’ at the old Pizza Hut location.

DANIELLE HENDRIX STAFF WRITER OCOEE The Pizza Hut on West Colonial Drive in Ocoee is not only getting a new look — it’s also getting a new location.

After the original building at 10870 W. Colonial Drive was torn down in mid-April, some residents began to question what happened to Pizza Hut. According to Ocoee permit records, the city issued a permit for demolition of the old Pizza Hut in March. Doug Terfehr, senior director of public relations for Pizza Hut, confirmed the restaurant will be moving into a retail space that once hosted a Verizon store on the same property. It is slated to open this summer.

something we think the community will love,” Terfehr said.

“This decision was made to better serve the community and to have a modern Pizza Hut that is equipped to continue to serve great, hot pizza to our customers.”

According to property records, the demolished building was roughly 2,767 square feet and built in 1981. The new location is roughly 2,320 square feet, and records show the city of Ocoee issued a permit in January for commercial alteration and renovation.

As for what will be going in place of the previous Pizza Hut location, records show that the city issued a permit for a Starbucks “alteration” there back in November 2016. The permit type is listed as allowing for new construction, shells and a shell building, although Starbucks has not confirmed plans or announcements for a new location.

“One, the emotional damage done to his family and himself was inexcusable,” Kruppenbacher said. “But two, the efforts by parties outside of Orange County — these PACs from elsewhere — to pour money into an Orange County election and influence the voters of Orange County, incorrectly, so they could gain control of a political office is something that threatens our democracy and Mr. Singh — he’s not going to stand still for it.”

The lawsuit, filed by Singh as a private citizen, will not make use of taxpayer money. Singh declined to name individuals or companies from which he is seeking damages, but Kruppenbacher estimated six will be named in a future amendment.

Kruppenbacher said he estimates about $3.4 million was spent to create the campaign against Singh.

“You have an astronomical amount of money being poured in, and the citizens of the county should demand to know who’s doing this,” Kruppenbacher said.

At just 5 years old, Windermere resident Brogan Regan is his parents’ hero.

That’s because just a 18 months ago, he was diagnosed with leukemia. And through all his extensive treatment, he never goes into an appointment or treatment without a smile on his face.

Now in his third and final phase of treatment, Brogan is set to be honored during one of the survivors’ laps at Relay for Life of West Orange Saturday, May 6.

In fall 2015, Angela and Richard Regan and their kids were new to the Orlando area. Having moved after being on a work assignment in the Dominican Republic, they first settled in Winter Park. But while they were working on getting their four children settled in school, they discovered something was wrong with Brogan.

All four kids were sick that October — Brogan with an ear infection, daughter Aspen and son Cahlan with sinus infections, and youngest son Vaehlen with a cold. Everyone soon got better, but for a little more than a week, Brogan still carried a fever that spiked to 104 degrees.

Then, on Halloween, Brogan fell going up the steps to a house while trick-or-treating. The next day — a Sunday — Angela Regan noticed Brogan sporting a gnarly bruise.

“When I woke up and he was sitting on the couch he had this bruise like I’d never seen before,” she said. “I thought, ‘Maybe he’s anemic.’ I took him to the pediatrician Monday and asked her if she could order some blood work.

Monday afternoon, I took him to get labs, and Tuesday morning the phone rang and they said we had to get him to the hospital.”

Brogan’s numbers were so low that he had to have two blood and two platelet infusions in the first 24 hours. That Wednesday it was

confirmed that he had leukemia.

The same day, the Regans booked their flight to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Since his diagnosis, Brogan’s time has been split between St. Jude and Florida Hospital. He’s currently on his third phase of treatment, called “the maintenance phase.” He stayed at St. Jude for about four months while receiving his first and second phases of treatment — high doses of chemotherapy.

Now in the maintenance phase, Brogan still receives smaller doses of chemotherapy. He’s on week 61 of the 120-week treatment phase and back in the classroom at Primrose School of Ocoee. And on Saturday, he’ll march around Lakeview Middle with other cancer survivors at Relay for Life.

“It’s life-changing for Brogan and the whole family; he is hands down our hero,” Angela Regan said. “As a child, he goes to his doctor’s appointments, he’s been in the hospital for weeks on end.

a child — he plays, makes fun and enjoys things wherever he’s at.

“I think the way that Brogan has been so strong has amazed me,” she said. “How the kids have handled themselves through this is just amazing to me.”

And his siblings have banded together as a support system for him, too. The way they support their brother and interact with each other, Angela Regan said, is “a parent’s dream.”

“He makes fun happen,” Aspen Regan, 9, said of her brother.

RELAY FOR LIFE WEST ORANGE

When Brogan’s teacher at Primrose School, Debbie Thomas,

asked the family if they could honor Brogan at Winter Garden’s Relay for Life, the Regans were all in.

“I think the celebration of survivors and remembering the lives that have been lost is touching, any time you experience something like that,” Angela Regan said. “We’re looking forward to speaking and sharing our story.

It’s special, it’s celebrating Brogan and his fight and how well he’s done.”

This year’s Relay for Life in Winter Garden — themed “Cruisin’ for the Cure,” a Route 66-based theme — is a bit different than in years past. It is only six hours this year, and organizers are focusing more on the event experience, which includes the need for more space. Normally held in downtown Winter Garden, the event has been moved to Lakeview Middle because of that need.

“We needed to move the location of the event in order for us to provide the event with the space it needed,” said Amy Nichols, community manager for Relay.

Richard Regan said the events their family has endured is a permanent reminder that every moment in life is something to be celebrated. “(Through it all) I’ve learned to really enjoy every minute of life and not take anything for granted,” he said. “Sometimes, it takes an event like this to make you recognize how special every day is.”

“The outpour of love and help that we have seen through the community, through the children’s school and through different organizations, the people that volunteer at the hospitals and do these things like Relay for Life — they’re amazing,” Angela Regan said. “Their hearts are so big, and I don’t think I would have ever realized how many people there are that just show true compassion in whatever way they can.”

occupying 141,000 square feet will be constructed on the 9.65acre property, which is estimated to host 10 to 15 tenants, said Wilson McDowell, the managing director of Cite Partners.

“We’ve got a couple leases to tenants and a multitude of users, some are office, some kind of deal with more convention center and tourist-related industries, and we’ve got a manufacturing group,” said McDowell. “We don’t have any leases signed, so I can’t exactly say who they are but we’ve got a ton of activity on the project.”

The planned industrial development also will include site design elements, such as parking areas, sidewalks and landscaping.

Its official approval is contingent on the successful vacation of utility and drainage easements on the site, which passed its first reading April 27 and is scheduled for the second reading on May 11.

McDowell expects the project will see a lot of demand, given its location and the market’s need for a higher-end industrial development that helps companies expand.

Schneider fell in love with the idea of donning a red uniform ever since he got the chance to observe firefighters at work during a ridealong.

Schneider, a Clermont resident, now has been a firefighter for 16 years and has worked for Brevard, Broward and Orange counties. He currently works as a fire engineer for the Winter Garden Fire Department and is the president of the union representing Winter Garden firefighters.

Given the responsibilities involved in his position as union president and the union’s own purpose to promote firefighters’ rights, Schneider also took advantage of a recent chance to attend a six-day political training academy hosted by the International Association of Fire Fighters in Maryland. Schneider was among 50 selected for a seat in the training course, which is designed to enhance one’s political knowledge regarding the process of running for elected office, as well how to effectively lead a campaign.

“It was an honor to be selected,” Schneider said. “I didn’t think

I was going to be selected, but it was such a great opportunity. It’s a long class over the course of six days, where you start very early in the morning, and sometimes, we weren’t done until 2 in the morning.”

The lack of sleep was a minor inconvenience for Schneider, who believes the course provided him with valuable insight and knowledge. Participants of the intensive course were given instruction on a variety of campaign topics and participated in simulation exercises taught by individuals with ample campaign experience. The students also attended group workshops about campaign planning, fundraising, polling, budgeting and even social-media tools to help spread awareness.

“At the end of the day, politics is difficult,” Schneider said. “And you know I never realized how difficult politics really is and how challenging it is until (the union was) organized, and we became a local, and I was voted in as the president and I started getting more and more involved in politics.”

But Schneider emphasized the importance of getting involved in politics and noted firefighters need more local and state support to protect firefighters’ health.

Firefighters are predisposed to various different cancers because of the high concentrations of carcinogens released from burning furniture in buildings and homes, which are often petroleum-based products. There is currently an

effort to pass state legislation, commonly known as the cancer presumption bill, to help firefighters battling cancer presumably developed in the line of duty.

Despite the health risks, long 24-hour shifts and significant amount of time spent away from his family, Schneider loves being a firefighter and said he is grateful for the opportunity to help people and enjoys the camaraderie with his fellow coworkers.

“It’s the best job in the world,” he said. “I don’t think it’s for everybody. There’s a lot of people that get into these jobs and then they realize it’s not for them. But for everyone (who) stays, it’s the most rewarding thing — the most rewarding career I could ever think of. I don’t think I could do anything else.”

The legacy of Nancy Sell-Dane Holy Family Catholic School will honor the memory of art teacher Nancy Sell-Dane with their spring musical.

The mantra still echoes in the hallways at Holy Family Catholic School even though Sell-Dane is no longer there. It’s just a piece of the legacy she left behind after her sudden death Dec. 26, 2016.

“She truly was a beautiful person,” said Sister Dorothy Sayers, principal of Holy Family Catholic School. “She was a gift to the school and to her students.”

As a tribute to Sell-Dane’s life, the school is dedicating this year’s spring musical in her honor.

This is the final show of the year for the school’s theater department and will star retiring theater department director Ken Rush as Tevye. After a successful career in the corporate world, Sell-Dane decided to try her hand at teaching and joined the staff at Holy Family Catholic School shortly after the school opened in 1996.

Little did she know just how much she would come to love her students.

“She was one of those teachers who gave her all and more,” said Tim Conyers, the music director at the school.

Sell-Dane was known for coming in on the weekends, during holidays, over spring break and during the summer months to put in extra hours for her students and the school’s projects.

doing art,” sixth-grader Madeline Orlando said.

Sell-Dane was a creative mastermind, Conyers said, because she not only taught art classes but also created the sets for school plays.

“She was a really integral part of the art and sets for many shows over the years,” he said.

From giant teapots to a walkthrough forest, Sell-Dane always created beautiful and elaborate set designs.

And she taught every student who attended Holy Family Catholic School.

“She made an impact on everyone,” said Hayleigh Jusas, an eighth-grader at the school.

Although she was known for her artistic skills, her students also remember her for her jokes.

“She was always able to add humor to stuff,” said eighthgrader Dia Sorrentino.

Just before Christmas break, Sell-Dane told her students that they had completed her life.

“This was her home, her family,” Conyers said.

A mural has been painted on one of the school walls as a memorial to Sell-Dane’s memory. It includes scenes from various plays, horses, symbols of Sell-Dane’s faith and a quote from Sell-Dane that reads, “One day at a time do the Lord’s will as best you can without knowing

the future. The Lord will take care of you along the way, and when it’s over, the Lord will bring you home.”

“A NIGHT ON BROADWAY”

When the school initially began planning its spring musical, the goal was to make it a celebration of the school’s 20th anniversary.

“When we started out, we said we wanted to do a Broadway review,” Conyers said, who is directing the production. “We had so many auditions that we decided to do a major production.”

The show will feature more than 100 students and songs from several Broadway productions, including “The Sound of Music,” “42nd Street,” “Aladdin,” “The Lion King” and “Annie.”

“I don’t think this has ever been done before,” Conyers said.

“It’s very, very unique. I don’t think there’s a school in Florida that’s tried to put on a show like this with the gamut of shows that we’re doing.”

After Sell-Dane’s death halfway through the school year, the school decided to frame the show as a tribute to her memory.

Students have been rehearsing for months in preparation for the show.

“It’s been fun,” Jusas said. “It’s like a huge medley of different shows.”

Sixth-graders Sophia Senior and Orlando have visited businesses around town to put up posters advertising the upcoming musical, and the community response, especially in light of Sell-Dane’s death, has been positive.

“It hasn’t been as much sad as it has been celebrating her life,” Conyers said.

Each performance also will include a short video to pay tribute to Sell-Dane and her work at the school.

“It will be a real nice evening for everybody,” Sayers said. “We want to celebrate her life.”

Bridgewater Middle’s upcoming Flash Dash 5K is about supporting the next generation of crimefighters.

to be Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman or Catwoman for a day, your chance to dress like them and race to escape villains and evil geniuses for a good cause is here.

Bridgewater Middle School’s upcoming Flash Dash 5K is in its inaugural year, but the actionpacked, comic book-themed race aims to draw the attention of superheroes and villains alike.

“The Flash Dash 5K is a fun run with a lot of character,” said Jennifer Benton, president of Bridgewater’s Parent-Teacher-Student Organization. “The villains have found out that we’re teaching the next generation of crimefighters so they’re trying to take over the course. We want people to dress up as their favorite superheroes or characters, have fun with their kids and get out and do something healthy.”

All proceeds raised will benefit the school’s PTSO to aid in technology improvements and to accommodate the growing student body. The race winds throughout the Independence community in Horizon West, starting and finishing at the main clubhouse. And although it’ll be timed, it won’t be chipped for the sake of having fun.

But it’s not a typical 5K race.

Superhero runners will have to be vigilant, because villains and evil geniuses are trying to sabotage the course. A group of volunteers

brainchild of two brothers from Winter Garden, David and Drew Cardaci — opened in 2006 in South Florida’s Oakland Park.

David had been in Fort Lauderdale for a few years working with a hospitality group before Drew moved to Colorado.

During that time, David and his wife, Vanessa, opened two more South Florida locations before Drew and his family came back to Orlando. When the opportunity arose to purchase the building on Plant Street, the Cardaci family jumped at the opportunity.

“The Whole Enchilada is family owned and operated, and Drew was out of the burrito scene for a while, but he’s back in now,” Vanessa Cardaci said. “We’ve wanted to have The Whole Enchilada in Orlando or Winter Garden for several years, but (it was difficult) logistically for us, being in South Florida and not having someone to work operations there. We would be in Winter Garden if our roots weren’t so deep here in Ft. Lauderdale.”

With Drew back in Orlando and ready to jump back into the burrito scene, bringing The Whole Enchilada to Winter Garden suddenly became feasible.

THE WHOLE ENCHILADA

The old Encore Furniture building was demolished last month, but the Cardacis are keeping the original façade and restoring its brickwork to keep the historic Plant Street look. The new building will be two stories, with dining on both floors and a small bar rooftop. Each floor will measure 2,500 square feet, and the location will be the first two-story building for the family-owned restaurant.

“When you walk into The Whole Enchilada, it’s a really fun, energetic atmosphere,” Vanessa Cardaci said. “We’re a little bit cheeky, and it’s super friendly. We don’t have a scripted type of service with our employees because we want all our locations to feel like a local taco place. Our line is open, so a lot of the cooks know the customers by name. It’s kind of an interactive experience altogether.

“They recognize people and know what people get,” she said.

“We play fun music, and adding the bar in brings another cool and exciting element.”

It’s a fast-casual concept, but everything is cooked to order and an emphasis is placed on the “Fresh Mex” aspect. Guests will order their food, receive a number and sit down to have their

I feel like other places have more of a dining experience while we’re more casual, so it’s a good addition to have that element on Plant Street.”

A social-media post plus a little sleuthing has resulted in a former West Orange Warrior getting back the class ring he lost shortly after graduating 24 years ago.

Brian Sibley, now living in Oklahoma, received a Facebook message recently saying someone was trying to find him to return his class ring.

The finder had posted information about the ring, another person shared it and still another person was tagged.

A classmate contacted Jennifer Harvey, a Winter Garden resident who graduated from WOHS with Sibley but had not spoken to him since high school.

“I messaged Brian (on Facebook) to see if I could put them in touch with each other because I thought it was a cool thing,” Harvey said. “I think it is great that he is getting his ring back. … Pretty cool stuff.”

“We aren’t sure how or where she found the ring, but she did work for U.S. Rentals in Winter Garden,” said Starlyne Clark, Mark’s wife. “Mark seems to remember her saying that she found it there. I don’t know if it was in a storage unit that she was checking or just on the property there.”

The ring contained a few hints as to its owner — the name Brian on one side and the Pisces zodiac sign on the other. Inside were the initials BMS. Starlyne Clark searched the internet to locate a 1993 West Orange yearbook. When she found it, she discovered one person matched the initials and first name: Brian Sibley.

She posted a message on Facebook and also sent a private message to a Brian Sibley in hopes it was him.

Meanwhile, other WOHS Class of 1993 graduates who saw the post were reaching out to him, as well.

REUNITING

Sibley was an active student at West Orange, participating in Student Council, Interact Club and JROTC. Currently a general manager for Papa John’s in Tulsa, he also worked for a decade as an electrician in Washington, D.C., and was a chef for a small restaurant for eight years in Naples.

He said he recalls his class ring getting misplaced when his family moved after high school.

It holds great sentimental attachment because his grandfather bought it as a graduation gift for Sibley. “(I’m) definitely looking forward to getting it back (because) it would be the only thing I have from my grandfather,” he said before the ring arrived.

The Clarks said they are happy they could reunite Sibley with his long-lost ring.

“In talking with Brian through Facebook, we found out that his birthday was on March 2, and that was the day Mom Clark passed away,” Starlyne Clark said.

“Those coincidences just don’t happen. Being able to find him and return the ring has brought us joy during our grief. I know Mom Clark would’ve wanted him to have the ring back, and I’m so glad we could do that.”

As Sibley wrote in a message to Harvey, “Awesomeness happens everywhere every day.”

Lauren Mathis pitched a complete-game shutout, and the West Orange softball team won its third consecutive district championship April 27 with a 2-0 victory over the host Apopka Blue Darters in the FHSAA District 9A-3 Championship.

Mathis allowed just two hits in her seven innings of work, striking out 11 batters. “(Mathis) threw really well,” head coach Todd LaNeave said. “I still believe she’s not 100% yet, but she’s getting there. She did a really nice job of mixing up the pitches, using the curveball a lot.”

Hailey Penrose and Amanda Fleming each had RBIs for West Orange (23-3), driving in Amanda Denis and Julia Sniffen.

Both teams advanced to the FHSAA Class 9A Playoffs, which began May 3 with the regional quarterfinals.

For the Warriors, winners of the Class 9A State Championship a season ago, the decision to rest Mathis more this season has paid some dividends. Instead of riding his ace all the way this spring, LaNeave gave several opportunities to junior Landry Newgent (1.575 ERA over 53 innings), who has blossomed into a pitcher capable of being the ace next spring.

Underclassmen Lauren Evans (0.583 ERA in 12 innings) and Katie Benedict (0.000 ERA in 9.2 innings of work) also got looks this spring, meaning that — beyond their ace — the Warriors have some additional tools in their toolbox as they navigate the state playoffs.

Campbell, formerly the associate head coach and defensive coordinator for Tampa Bay Bucs legend Mike Alstott at Northside Christian, had begun to assess head coaching opportunities.

When the former linebacker for the Clemson Tigers applied and interviewed for an opening at Victory Christian in Lakeland, he made a good impression. That led the athletic director at Victory to pass along Campbell’s résumé when he heard that CFCA Athletic Director Kyle Wills was looking to replace Chris Cook, who had stepped down after one season at the helm.

Coming out for flag football as a freshman, how did the sport compare to what you thought it would be?

I hadn’t played before I got to high school. It is much more intense than what I’d expected — the level of competition from the other teams was not what I expected.

I like trying to catch the quarterback. I try my best to get to her, and when I do, it feels like victory.

Why did you have the desire to pick up a second sport in addition to cheerleading?

I wanted to stay active and not sit in the house.

What was it like to get the crowd pumped this past season, while the football team was playing well?

It felt really, really good.

It was different from past years, where the football team hadn’t done that well, but this year, they did really well. It felt good.

What do you like about defense and playing the pass-rushing position?

T

he following is a small example of what is cool about high-school sports.

The story starts with a call from the Jones High athletic director to David Baginski, the athletic director for Foundation Academy, the morning of April 18.

The Foundation softball team was to host Jones on its Senior Night that night.

Unfortunately, a wave of injuries had brought the Lady Tigers’ numbers down to just seven available players — short of the number needed to play a regulation game.

The two programs have a budding relationship, having scheduled games against one another the past few seasons, so Baginski asked for a favor. Instead of canceling the game — and the Senior Night festivities for the Lady Lions — perhaps Foundation could instead lend some of its girls to the Jones team so they could get the game in, even if it would not be an official game.

You see, of the five seniors on the Foundation softball team, a few also had played for the school’s soccer team. That Senior Night had been canceled, and the girls had to have their ceremony before the start of a boys soccer game.

So, with that in mind, Baginski and softball head coach Randy Ames were determined to try and make the game happen.

The athletic director from Jones High agreed, and so the seven girls from Jones and their coaches arrived that afternoon for a ballgame.

Upon arrival, though, the umpire crew that was to call

the game let the coaches know that it wasn’t so much that they wouldn’t call an unofficial game — but that they couldn’t. On top of that, of the girls Jones had lost to injury, their pitcher was among them.

Having an inexperienced pitcher on the mound without an umpire to call balls and strikes could be a dicey proposition, but that’s when Ames had a lightbulb go off in his head: They needed to play a game, but maybe it didn’t have to be softball.

Ames gathered his seniors together and laid out a proposition: How about we play kickball?

The response was an enthusiastic affirmation, and that’s just what happened. A couple girls for Foundation joined the Jones side, and the two teams played a game of kickball. Before the game, the five seniors for Foundation got their Senior Night ceremony.

And, to top it all off, the girls for both teams had fun — and made some new friends.

“It was cool,” Ames said. “At the end of the game they were exchanging Twitter and other social networking … they made some friends out of it.

They’re five great kids. They were just happy to be able to do something.”

For Baginski, not only was it a win for the girls to have been able to have had their senior night, but also it was an example of the school’s students handling a little bit of adversity in a positive manner.

“They chose to step up and make the best of it and really pull out a really fun night,” Baginski said. “(Senior Night is part of) the high-school experience … we want to make sure that we’re doing our best to give them the experience that every kid deserves to have. Now, they can look back on it and have pictures and memories of it.”

The Lady Lions’ season ended last week in their district tournament, but for the team’s five seniors, they always will have their memory of the time they played Jones High in a roaring game of kickball.

SOME WELLDESERVED RECOGNITION You may have seen the name Nate Marrero in this paper before.

He is a senior at Ocoee High who has an interest in becoming a sports journalist.

For the past two years, he has received some real-world work experience by helping out our newspapers here in Orange County, usually covering Ocoee games I could not attend.

In addition to that, he has his own personal blog which he uses to regularly cover sports at Ocoee High, and he also operates the Twitter account for the Knights baseball team.

In short, he’s a gogetter, creating opportunities for valuable experience and loyally producing recaps and galleries his classmates look forward to reading.

When the Ocoee High baseball team had its Senior Night game April 27 against Celebration, it was to Nate’s great surprise that there was one additional number painted on the field to recognize the program’s seniors: it was the No. 1, and it was for him.

Kudos to head coach Bobby Brewer and his staff for choosing to recognize Nate along with the program’s other seniors. As important as it is to recognize the athletes on the field for their hard work, it’s pretty cool to see some recognition for the team’s loyal beat writer off of it.

nity was God’s work.

“I did my research and found out (CFCA) was a great place to be,” Campbell said. “I didn’t seek out this job — God placed it in my lap. When God ordains something, who are we to stand in the way?”

That should be music to the ears of the CFCA community, which has seen a revolving door of coaches over the past few years. Campbell is the program’s fifth head coach in as many years, but he said is eager to install a culture of consistency on campus — a trait he said he picked up from Alstott.

“It’s all about being consistent: Consistency from the staff and consistency with the kids,” Campbell said. “I’m not leaving. I plan on being here for as long as they’re going to have me.”

Along with Alstott and the rest of the staff at Northside, Campbell was part of rebuilding that program to the point of winning its first district and regional championships in 30 years last fall. Campbell points out that just five years ago, Northside was dressing around 18 players for a spring football game. Last fall, they routinely dressed more than 40. It is evidence of a coach who is not afraid of being around a project that requires some building.

Campbell and his family are in the process of selling their home in St. Petersburg and moving to West Orange. In the meantime, he will commute to Ocoee three times a week until the Eagles host Cornerstone Charter in their spring game May 19.

He is excited to start the process of molding the team to his preferred brand of football.

“We’re going to be very fast and athletic,” Campbell said.

“And we’re going to be smart and disciplined. You don’t have to be the greatest athlete in the world to be smart. Smartness and effort, those are two things I’m going to harp on.”

BOLTUS SETTLES IN

A lot of things felt the same for Jason Boltus as the Ocoee football team began spring practice last week. After all, it marked Boltus’ third spring with the Knights.

The difference, though, was that Boltus — formerly the team’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach — is now the head guy after Ben Bullock’s departure for Lake Highland Prep last month.

As the Knights wrapped up a session April 28, Boltus admitted there are some differences to being head coach.

“It’s a lot more management,” Boltus said. “(But) I’m still the same old me, having fun and eager to be out here. I’m just trying to bring the energy — we’ve got a lot of kids out here that are excited about Ocoee football and trying to repeat as district champions this year.”

Boltus has put together a staff for the spring that he is excited about, adding that roles will be fluid as they progress through the spring and into fall camp.

The Knights suffered a few transfers during the weeks leading up to Bullock’s departure, as well as the loss of a valuable group of senior leaders, but Boltus seems confident the Knights can continue to build off of their 2016 success as they prepare to host University May 19 in their spring game.

“They’re eager to learn and they’re bringing a lot of energy,” Boltus said.

O

nce Andy and Colleen Williams’s solarpanel system is given the green light to be switched on, they will have the first house in Windermere — and one of about 50 in the entire metro Orlando area — running on solar power.

The longtime Windermere residents currently live in a house on Lake Down; in fact, it’s Andy’s childhood home. But the discussion about going solar has been ongoing since they were in their previous house.

“Our daughter is 8 years old, so when she was born, it was like, ‘How do we change the carbon footprint in the world?’” Colleen Williams said. “Solar panels are something we always wanted to do. It’s important that she have a life, her kids have a life and that they have the resources we had.”

Andy Williams owns Lakeside Realty in Windermere, and he originally heard that Tesla-backed solar-power company SolarCity was coming to the Orlando and Windermere areas through a friend. One of his agents is good friends with Scott Smith, the Williams’s SolarCity representative.

Upon expressing interest in solar power and talking with Smith about it in January, the Williamses knew they wanted to move forward with the process.

The family has gone through the consultation and installation processes and now have 62 solar panels installed on their roof. All that’s left to do is wait on paperwork to process with Duke Energy, allowing them to switch the system on.

SolarCity is the largest distributor and manufacturer of solar panels in the country, Smith said, with nearly 400,000 installations thus far and growing. With the recent amendments nationwide regarding solar power, Smith said, the interest and desire to get on board with it is growing.

The goal of running on solar power not only is to reduce carbon footprint and contribute to the green movement of being environmentally conscious. Its aim also is to get to the point where solar-panel users essentially have no electric bills. Rather, the amount they pay to use their solar panels is competitive with utility companies’ charges.

And according to SolarCity, the average solar system will offset 178 tons of carbon dioxide in 30 years.

The Williams family will still technically be “on the grid” — the home still will be connected to Duke Energy’s grid. It is actually illegal to go completely off the grid, Smith said, and the family still will need electricity at night.
