presentation at the meeting to update the commission about Florida Hospital. One of the matters he discussed involved helicopter flights over Winter Garden.

American Legion post celebrates 98th anniversary Longevity awards were presented to legionnaires for their dedication to the Hugh T. Gregory post in Winter Garden.

The American Legion post in Winter Garden, Hugh T. Gregory No. 63, has been in existence for 98 years, and two of its members have been with the organization for nearly a third of that time.

Gary Happnie and John Kostu were awarded their 30-year certificates and pins at the post’s 98th anniversary dinner celebration, held Friday, April 27, at the post.

Other were recognized for their ongoing membership, as well: Thomas Blastic and Harold Brothers, 25 years; Orval Riker and Richard Siemon, 20 years; William Brouillard, Gunther Sibuls, Michael Fennessey, Kenneth Kelley and Russel Niday, 15 years; Eugene Bohmert, Michael Brown, John Foster, Larry Rose and George Traywick, 10 years; and Edward Dault, Sean Gibbs, Ashley Jacques, Claude Leslie, William Luke, Kenneth Lyons, Karl Meyer, Betty Michael, Shawn Myers, Stuart Thomas and Matthew Whitney, five years.

Following dinner, guest speaker Steve Shuga, commander for the American Legion Department of Florida, took the podium. Shuga has visited every post in the state since starting his position last July.

Also during the program, First Vice Commander Kurt Gies gave a history of the legion, and Stu Kinneburgh and Tom Powell provided entertainment.

BACKGROUND

The American Legion was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization devoted to mutual helpfulness.

When local veterans applied for a temporary charter in Winter

Garden in April 1920, the post was assigned number 63, simply because it was the 63rd post to be organized in Florida. The permanent charter was effective in August 1921. John C. Bowyer was the first commander.

The Hugh T. Gregory American Legion Post 63 was later named for Gregory, a Winter Garden resident and first lieutenant in the 3rd Pioneer Infantry of the U.S. Army who was killed in France in December 1920 during World War I. He is buried in the Oakland Cemetery.

The first elected officers were Sam T. Salisbury, commander; W.B. Burch, adjutant; Elwood M. Tanner, treasurer; Vance McCloud, sergeant-at-arms; Leonard M. Gaddy, historian; the Rev. H.C. Harden, chaplain; and Joe McCann, athletic officer.

At that time, there were 45 members.

Meetings were held in locations such as skating rinks, garages and theaters until 1926, when two developers donated land at 271 W. Plant St., in downtown Winter Garden. The post remains there today.

The iconic building, with its red log-cabin design, was used in the HBO movie “From the Earth to the Moon” in 1997, and some residents caught a glimpse of Tom Hanks, who starred in, directed and produced the film.

Kathryn O. Boyer was elected the post’s first female commander in 1999.

Today, the post provides JROTC medals and program assistance, scholarships, school medals to students at eight local elementary schools, students for Boys State and assistance to Matthew’s Hope; and it assists veterans and families through Project Vet Relief and other American Legion programs.

ith bowling, burgers and booze, GameTime in Ocoee hopes to become West Orange’s newest local hangout.

“We certainly are always actively looking for ways to tie ourselves to the local community,” GameTime CEO and founder Mike Abecassis said. “We want to find ourselves trying to connect to that community, because we’re just a local space. We’re not a tourist-type attraction, typically. We’re really trying to connect to the local community and be a regular place to go. …

We want to be their second living room.”

The family entertainment center will celebrate its grand opening from May 4 to 6 with prize giveaways, promotions and food and drink specials throughout the weekend. In honor of Cinco de Mayo, GameTime will offer $5 margaritas, $5 tequila shots and $15 Corona buckets. Each bucket will have five Coronas.

GameTime features a wide variety of video arcade games, indoor miniature bowling, a fullliquor bar and a diverse menu,

said GameTime Marketing Director Kelli Markunas.

“It’s beyond American cuisine,” Markunas said.

“There’s just so much diversity in our menu now.”

Markunas added the menu offers everything from wings, tacos, burgers, ribs, nachos, pasta, pot stickers and more.

Games are played using a card-based system that features two options to play. Players can choose a card where they play by the hour or play by the credit, Abecassis said.

“We sell time-based play that allow guests to play for a limited amount of time,” Abecassis said. “Those cards are limited in what games can be played and it doesn’t win any prizes or tickets. Additionally, it cannot be shared; it locks out while another game is being played.

And then, we sell a credit-based card that is essentially an à la carte play, so it’s pay-to-play for each individual game.”

Markunas said GameTime offers a combo deal so players can enjoy a meal and games at a low cost.

“We have a dine-and-play combo, which is a great value,” Markunas said. “It gives you a select menu item plus a $15 allaccess game card for only $16.99, so your meal is practically free with that combo.”

In addition to games and food, GameTime also features dozens of TVs that will show sporting events throughout the year, Abecassis said.

“We’re always promoting all of the sporting events — whether it’s football, basketball, hockey, baseball — we’re showing everything that we can,” Abecassis said. “We always show every football game. We buy the NFL package, and we show every football game. … Anywhere you sit in the restaurant, you’ll certainly be able to see all the games at any time. … (We) want to make sure we’re thought of as a place to go to when there’s a special (sporting) event.”

“When we approved the Florida Hospital, they agreed to have their helicopters fly a certain route — which generally bypasses the neighborhoods,” Bollhoefer said.

“Over the past two years, we’ve had a few helicopters not follow those routes and actually fly over the neighborhoods. And our job is to correct that and ensure they don’t.”

Cook listed some of the causes of the issue and discussed a fourpoint plan on how to address it.

“We found that some pilots are new, and they haven’t managed the new flight path, but we also found that seasoned pilots still didn’t follow the flight path,” Cook said.“We’re still investigating that.”

The first point in the plan involves ensuring the multiple flight-service providers Florida Hospital uses are educated about the flight path over Winter Garden that helicopters are required to follow.

“In our naiveté, we thought if we educate the multiple flightservice providers with the new flight path, then that’s all we’d have to do and we’d be done,” Cook said. “What we’re learning is we’re going to have to do that over and over and intentionally be proactive about it, because I think it gets a little out of sight, out of mind because the helicopter traffic (here) isn’t as prominent as it is in some other places.”

The second point is to work with dispatchers to remind aviation service providers of the flight path helicopter pilots must take over Winter Garden, Cook said.

“When they dispatch a helicopter, they (dispatchers) are going to remind the provider — whichever one it is — of the Winter Garden flight path, because we think that little proactive reminder may help create a little more compliance,” Cook said.

Third, Florida Hospital will implement a more aggressive follow-up plan pertaining to helicopters that fly off the required path. The final point involves gathering data of flights straying away from the required path and meeting with flight-service providers to discuss the data.

Cook also updated commissioners on what is still to come at the hospital.

“We’ll expand cardiology, general surgery, urology; we’ll have an ENT (ear, nose, throat) practice that’s slated to go in there toward the end of the year,” Cook said.

“As the year ends ... we anticipate starting a medical oncology practice there with infusion. ... We’re also going to expand the primary care services in the building as well as rehab.”

Board approves rezoning CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

overcrowding at Keene’s Crossing, Independence, Bay Lake and Sand Lake elementary schools.

The relief schools have not yet been named and will open in the fall of 2019, said District 4 School Board Member Pam Gould.

“We approved a zoning option, but we did — after our workshop (in March) — have more of the community come out with concerns,” Gould said.

Gould added the two primary concerns residents raised pertained to communities being separated and distances from schools.

“One (concern) is the perception ... that some of the communities are slightly closer to one school than another,” Gould said.

“The second (concern) is there is a large subdivision that is separated

by Seidel Road and in the option that we were presenting forward … that subdivision was going to two different schools based on the division of Seidel Road.”

That large subdivision is the Watermark community. Carey Adams is a resident of Watermark and started a petition to oppose the zoning options that were approved by the school district.

“We went to the School Board to share that we oppose (the zoning), because they ultimately are breaking up our neighborhood,” Adams said. “We see ourselves as one neighborhood of Watermark.

We just happened to be split by a main artery (road) through our neighborhood, but we do a ton of stuff together. The neighborhood acts as one.”

Resident Cynthia Dailey also started a petition opposing the zoning options that were approved. Dailey’s petition

relates to the issue of distances from schools. Her petition notes the zoning does not line up with how Horizon West was planned.

Each village in Horizon West is supposed to have an elementary school within walking distance of the homes.

“The purpose of the petition I started was to show the board during the meeting that residents of Horizon West want the concept of neighborhood elementary schools to be an important factor when they rezone in our area,” Dailey said. “There will be more rezonings as Horizon West grows.

Not everyone will be happy with them, but if they respect the concept of the walkable neighborhoods attending the elementary in their own area — at least the lifestyle promised by that part of the masterplan will be upheld for the homes in the same neighborhoods as the schools as they are opened.”

Gould said to address these concerns, she recommended the school district consider targeted rezoning options in certain communities.

“Because of some of the concerns that were brought up … I recommended that we pass the (zoning) plan with the promise to come back by October with some targeted rezoning options or consideration of that,” she said.

“We’re going to look at (the zoning) again based on the testimony that we got via email and heard. … Do we run into this (issue)?

Yes, all the time. Do we try and accommodate it as much as we can? All of the time, because we don’t want to break up communities. We want to keep communities together as much as possible. Horizon West is unique because the whole community is

not built.”

Adams and Dailey both responded to how the school board addressed their concerns.

“My hope is that they really do take it to heart and don’t split up neighborhoods and/or communities,” Adams said. “I think that their job is difficult. … They’ve got to decide to split it somewhere, and they’re looking at a lot of different things.”

“I felt that (my) point was heard and respected during the (school) board meeting,” Dailey said. “Once Horizon West is built out, it will all normalize, and the growing pains and overcrowding will subside. But with the current rules about when new schools can be planned — overcrowded schools are a reality that all the residents in this area will just have to live with if they want all the benefits that come with living in such an amazing area.”

Orange County Public Schools Director of Student Enrollment Dr. Carol McGowin said some students may be eligible for a grandfathered transfer if the new zoning affects what school they attend. Students would just have to meet one of three criteria.

“As part of the rezoning adventure, the school board has put in place grandfather transfers to help … ease the transition rezoning causes,” McGowin said.

“Either the student has been rezoned twice by OCPS at a given grade level, the student is being moved from an existing school to an existing school or the student is a rising fifth- or eighth-grader zoned to the relief school.”

The deadline to apply for a grandfather transfer is May 31.

Oakland begins work on urban design guidelines The new guidelines will take the town’s Gateway Corridor Overlay ordinance a step further to establish more-defined standards for new buildings along West Colonial Drive, Oakland Avenue and Tubb Street.

GUIDING THE TOWN

When Oakland officials first discussed bringing sewer into town about seven years ago, Foltz received a call from someone considering building a truck stop.

“We knew that’s not what we wanted,” he said.

The town created its Gateway Corridor Overlay about 16 years ago — prior to considering building a sewer system— to establish signage, landscaping and architecture guidelines for developers wanting to build along the town’s main routes: West Colonial Drive, Tubb Street and Oakland Avenue.

The town updated the ordinance in 2013 and established the Appearance Review Board to ensure standards in development and to keep the flavor of Oakland alive.

“For a long time, I’ve wanted to go deeper with that,” Foltz said.

And now he has the opportunity. “(The town is) going from

general planning to mobility planning to urban design,” Town Planner Jay Marder said. “We’ve done a lot of customized urban design, (meaning) we’ve gone project to project without real guidelines.”

One idea is to have five or six design districts, he said.

This includes Neighborhood Commercial; Institutional, around churches and schools; multi-family and single-family residential; one geared toward Colonial and another geared toward Oakland Avenue; and one that utilizes the flavor of the Oakland Nature Preserve and its distinctive buildings.

The next step is for the designers to put together all the elements — including drawings and specifications — discussed at the workshops and create a working document.

“Now we go in and modify all those drawings and frameworks to fit Oakland as a town; to fit the type of historic-oriented architecture that we like here, to fit the natural materials that you find in Florida,” Marder said.

The completed document is expected to go before the P&Z and the ARB in June and then to the Town Commission in July.

Now that its Mobility Master Plan is complete, the town of Oakland is focusing on another planning component — the urban design guidelines.

A two-day workshop was held April 25 and 26 with town staff, members of the town’s Planning & Zoning and Appearance Review Board, urban designer Michael Morrissey and planner Tara Salmieri of PlanActive Studio.

Their purpose was to further define the architectural features and styles that will adorn future construction.

“Is Oakland block and stacked stone? No, it’s more brick, more wood,” Foltz said. “And that’s what the study is about.” “(The town’s evolution) goes from from what we were with septic tanks to what we are now with sewer,” Foltz said. “We don’t want to lose who we are.

So as an urban planner, with my

background, if what I did was to bring sewer, but then we become Anywhere USA, then I have failed because that’s not what the people want.

“Development isn’t bad; it just needs guidelines,” he said.

POSITIVE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: Equivalent to saving 8,900 gallons of gasoline, powering more than 11 homes for a year, planting more than 2,000 new trees and deferring more than 28 tons of landfill waste.

With a name like Innovation Montessori Ocoee, the school is serious about its commitment to inspire innovative thinking. A giant solar flower installed on the ground near the primary campus is visible proof of that.

The 16-foot “flower” is actually made up of 12 solar panels and produces enough energy to power a house. Its location gives students visible access to it as a learning tool.

“The flower itself rises in the morning, tracks the sun across the sky and closes at night,” said Sherilyn Moore, president of the school’s board of directors.

“That’s the most effective way, because it tracks the sun. It’s also a cool feature and a talking point with the children.”

A future program expansion will increase the coverage to power the entire campus.

“Montessori’s education philosophy goes beyond academics, and one thing Montessori is very passionate about is environmentalism, so our school will be energy independent,” said Cathy Tobin, assistant principal.

The SmartFlorida Solar flower is the result of nearly two years of discussions the board of directors had when moving from Winter Garden to Ocoee and building a new campus.

“When we were building the school, we were endeavoring to

build the most environmentally friendly school that we could on our budget,” Moore said. “We talked about solar. … We discussed having one tiny piece of solar in an energy garden – one kinetic energy piece, a wind piece and a solar piece.”

The board met Stephen Facella — nicknamed Solar Steve — when he spoke to the group about introducing a solar program.

“He actually introduced himself to us before his kids came to the school,” Tobin said. “He

just wanted to share solar power.

He’s on a mission. He thinks it’s important to the health of the planet. He knew the connection between Montessori and environmentalism, and he heard we were building a new campus.”

Facella, who attended a Montessori school as a child, said he understands and believes in the Montessori Method and its focus.

His home has run on solar energy for several years.

He approached the school and said to the board: “‘You cannot have this brand-new school and be powering this school with fossil fuels and teaching peace education.’

“I said I would do anything I could to make sure the school is solar run,” he said.

Facella connected with WattSun Energy, in Windermere, and Alternative Energy Services Corporation, both of which agreed to install the system at cost.

He introduced the board to First Green Bank, in Clermont, a bank dedicated to helping companies go green, and the school was able to obtain a loan to turn the entire facility solar.

The solar flower works in conjunction with a 28kW solar system on the roof of the school’s primary building, as well as a 37kW system on the main campus building.

The primary building’s system is made up of 106 solar panels and two inverters that capture and create clean renewable energy from the sun equal to more than 43,000 kWh per year. The main campus building’s system has 128 solar panels and one large capac-

ity inverter that captures and creates clean renewable energy from the sun equal to more than 50,000 kWh per year.

“The reason the flower exists is so the kids could see it in art form,” Facella said.

He now has one child at the school, and a second will start attending next year.

The school held its first Arteco festival last month, and students performed and displayed artwork.

The event allowed students and staff to showcase the solar flower and other environmentally friendly aspects of the campus. Innovation Montessori was able to save about 250 trees at the front of the property, and those that couldn’t be saved were repurposed into benches, outdoor classrooms and mulch. It also operates two irrigation systems, one from the well that was already on the property and the other out of a pond.

WattSun Energy is taking the school’s solar program a step further and is making a donation to the school for every Innovation family that switches to solar.

It’s all part of making students aware of their environment and that their actions do make a difference.

“The flower, using that as a teaching tool, saving the planet, of course is a goal, but showing the students (in) real time the impact these things can make is really, really important,” Moore said. “In having Innovation in our name, we try to inspire these kids any way we can.”

Roberta (Donahue) Davis, age 78, of Winter Garden, Florida, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2018. She was preceded in her passing by her mother, Elizabeth (Cook) Donahue, and father, Louis Donahue, as well as her sister, Anna Belle (Donahue) Fulford.

She is survived by her brother, Robert Donahue (and his wife, Mary, in Indiana), her ex-husband, Clarence Davis, two daughters, Sharon (Davis, Jones) Joiner (spouse is Wesley), and Brenda Davis; one granddaughter, Nancy Jones Hamlet, (spouse Edwin living in Kentucky); one greatgranddaughter, Alexandra Hamlet; one nephew, Jon Lee Fulford (Florida); and one niece, Denise Donahue (Arizona).

Roberta Louise Donahue was born Dec. 30, 1939, and raised in Orlando. She and the Donahue Family were members of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in Orlando.

She graduated from Boone High School in 1957 and was married to Clarence Davis for 40 years. She retired as a state employee from Valencia Community College, also having worked at Indian River Community College and Orange County Media Center.

WO alum Gomber gets MLB call-up Fresh off one of the best starts of his minor-league career, former Warrior Austin Gomber was recalled by the St. Louis Cardinals April 29 and joined the team for its game in Pittsburgh.

On April 23, West Orange High baseball alum Austin Gomber had one of the best starts of his professional career. The left-handed pitcher struck out 16 batters over eight shutout innings for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds in a 3-0 victory over the Iowa Cubs.

Six days later, the former Warrior got the news he had been waiting for his whole life — the St.

Louis Cardinals called up Gomber to join the Big League-club for the finale of a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Gomber is wearing No. 68 and according to MLB.com’s Matt Kelly, will be utilized in the Cardinals’ bullpen.

Although he did not see any action for that first game, as a reliever, he could be called upon at any time. The Cardinals returned to St. Louis Sunday night and will host the Chicago White Sox for a pair of games May 1 and 2 before

hosting the rival Chicago Cubs May 4 to 6.

Gomber, 24, has pitched well for Triple-A Memphis this season. In four starts, he has a 2.45 ERA spanning 25.2 innings with 27 strikeouts.

Well before West Orange senior Elijah Jackson became a regional champion in the shot put and the top seed in Class 4A entering this weekend’s 2018 FHSAA Track & Field State Championships at the University of North Florida, he admits he was pretty bad at the sport.

“I went to the first few meets, and I kind of got whooped,” Jackson said, laughing.

With a regional championship for the program hanging in the balance, the first-year coach for the Warriors laid out the scenario.

“We told the girls that we had to win the race,” Morris said.

Reggie Jean is relatively new to shot put. The Foundation Academy eighth-grader only took up the sport this spring, but already he is making a name for himself. Jean won the Greater Orlando Athletic Conference Middle School Championship in the event and qualified for the middle-school state meet May 12 at IMG Academy. Jean has improved from throwing 37 feet to a personal best of 44 feet.

How long have you been doing shot put, and how did you get started?

This is my first time doing it. I went (to track) for the football workouts, and I did the shot put, too. I just enjoy doing it and competing.

What was it like to compete in some of the varsity meets for Foundation Academy?

It was tough, because they use a bigger ball, and it was hard to throw. The people I was throwing against were experienced and a lot older. It motivated me.

What is your routine before you throw at a meet?

I stretch my legs and arms.

What would you consider to be your main sport?

Basketball. I play center for the middle-school team. …

I’m good in the post and at rebounding.

What do you like about playing team sports?

I like that I get to play with my friends and compete against other teams.

Who is your favorite basketball player?

I like LeBron James. I like how he can just power through the defense.

The victory in that race helped secure a team championship victory as West Orange’s 57 points at the meet topped Winter Park’s 55 and Windermere’s 52. The victory April 26 was extra sweet for the Warriors, because they had been defeated by rival Windermere — a roster that includes several former teammates rezoned for the new school — at the Metro West Championship earlier in the month.

Now the program has a district and regional title to its credit as it heads to state — and the West Orange boys team is coming along, too. The Warriors boys team finished tied for second at the regional championships that day, and between both teams a total of 16 student-athletes will make the trip to the University of North Florida for the 2018 FHSAA Track & Field State Championships May 4-5.

“It’s a really big deal,” Morris said. “It’s exciting any time you have an opportunity to make school history.”

Although the girls 4x400 relay was the emotional highlight of the day, Morris said the success for West Orange was punctuated by athletes stepping up in big moments.

Whether it was Shyanne Mayes in the 800-meter run, Simon Sutherland in the discus and shot put, Nicholas Miller in the 1,600-meter run or Taryn Dotson in the long jump, several Warriors outperformed their pre-meet seeding.

Add to that individual regional championships from the likes of Russell Robinson, Elijah Jackson, Jasmine Williams and Jahnile Registre and West Orange had a winning combination.

Now, the Warriors will head to Jacksonville with their sights set on contending for state championships. Results from the state meet can be followed at FHSAA.org.

Buying in pays off standout at West Orange in football and basketball, formally took up the shot put as a junior.

Throwing coach David Peaco, an assistant under head track coach Adolph Morris, remembers when Jackson first came out and being underwhelmed with his original throws of about 39 feet (11.88 meters).

“I was like, ‘Oh Lord — we’ve got a little work to do here,’” Peaco said.

Instead of giving up, Jackson doubled down.

“I made a commitment to work even harder and to listen to what (Peaco) says,” Jackson said. “I’m really glad that I have a great coaching staff behind me.”

That commitment paid off.

During the winter, while Jackson was playing for the Warriors boys hoops team that made it to the Final Four, he called his throwing coach about getting a few practice tosses in to warm up for the approaching spring season.

“He threw it 49 feet,” Peaco said. “I thought, ‘Oh my goodness — is this a fluke?’ And then he did it again.”

Jackson has continued to improve since then, winning Metro West, district and regional championships along the way.

Julia Sniffen admits she’s never quite come to bat in a moment like the one she faced during the FHSAA Class 9A, District 3 Softball Championship.

Sniffen, a senior for the West Orange Warriors, stepped up to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning April 26. West Orange was tied with rival Olympia, 4-4, and the bases were loaded. A hit would go a long way toward securing a district title — and an out would

leave the door open for an upset by the Titans, who already had upset Apopka earlier in the week.

Luckily for Sniffen and the Warriors, the result was the former. The veteran catcher for West Orange drove a three-run double to right field.

Although Olympia threatened in the top of the seventh, the Warriors held on for a 7-4 victory — and the program’s fourth consecutive district championship.

“I was scared out of my mind,” Sniffen said, recalling her final at-bat. “It really felt great off the

The game opened with West Orange (20-7) taking an early 2-0 lead in the third, but the Titans struck right back with a four-run top of the fourth.

Trailing 4-2, the Warriors got a pair of runs back in the fifth to tie the game, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.

Three pitchers for West Orange took the mound, with Landry Newgent starting and Riley Fromberg and Lauren Evans pitching in relief. Fromberg was credited with the win and Evans the save.

For Olympia, Caryssa Orland pitched four innings before being relieved by Megan Wilder.

Cameryn Orland and Larissa Rodriguez each had RBIs for the Titans.

Both teams advanced to the regional playoffs this week. As district champs, the Warriors hosted Dr. Phillips in the regional quarterfinal May 2 — as runnerup, Olympia traveled to Lake Nona.

Both games took place after press time, and the results for those respective games can be found at ObserverPreps.com.

The winners will meet May 8 in the regional semifinals.

The West Orange boys and girls lacrosse teams both fell in the opening round of the FHSAA State Playoffs last week.

The 2018 lacrosse season came to an end for West Orange High’s girls and boys programs on consecutive nights last week, as the teams fell in respective regional quarterfinal matches April 26 and 27.

The career for West Orange standout Mikey Berkman — Florida’s all-time leading scorer — came to a close last week.

Orange girls team fell at home to visiting Lake Highland Prep 15-3.

The Warriors, who had defeated East Ridge April 20 to win the district championship, ended the season with a 15-5 record in new coach Nikki Thorndill’s first season.

A day later, again Raymond Screws Field, the West Orange boys team was unable to keep pace with Bishop Moore (16-2).

The Hornets handed the Warriors their first — and only — loss of the season in a 16-1 defeat.

Bishop Moore, which will host Winter Park in the regional semifinals, is coached by Reed Reynolds, an alum of West Orange High.

West Orange ended the season with a 14-1 record.

The defeats also ended the varsity careers of two standouts for the school: seniors Meghan Bomleny and Mikey Berkman.

Berkman, Florida’s all-time leading scorer, scored the lone goal for the Warriors, bringing his remarkable career total to 484 points — with 99 of those points coming this season.

Berkman, who was LaxRecords. com’s National Player of the Week last week, will play his college lacrosse at Syracuse University.

Bomleny is signed to play her college lacrosse at Saint Francis.

Perhaps one of the most unique features, Karr said, is the garage. It can fit more than five cars and even includes a vehicle display.

“The car garage (is) for someone who collects vehicles, and it has a turntable where you can put a show car on there,” Karr said. “(The home has) a special room inside of that where Joey had all his trophies and things.”

Also outside is a million-dollar pool and entertainment area, as well as a boat house right on the lake. Lined by palm trees and greenery, the pool is designed to resemble a tropical oasis, complete with a waterfall.
