ordan Baszner does not consider himself much of a bird enthusiast; he only learned what a purple martin was three years ago. But when the first pair of purple martins showed up at the 22-compartment birdhouse he spent a year planning, he was ecstatic.

The birdhouse, which looks almost like a miniature condominium, is located near a retention pond in the Summerport neighborhood right outside the Keene’s Crossing Elementary School campus.

Baszner, who manages science and environmental education at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, is also part of the purple martin conservation project at Disney, which has erected about 20 martin homes throughout its grounds.

Using the knowledge he learned at Disney, Baszner set out to obtain approval from his neighborhood’s HOA to establish a martin home in his own neighborhood.

“This particular bird species prefers open areas so that they’re not near trees where hawks and eagles might get them and they can have a 360-degree view around them,” Baszner said. “So I was looking at this one area in our neighborhood that was near the school and near water and thought, ‘This is a perfect location.’

“So I went ahead and asked our HOA board and the process took about a year, because we also had to get approvals from neighbors,” he said. “Once we got the OK, I asked some of my Disney friends who work with me on the purple martin project to come help me with the construction.”

Baszner used tactics he learned from conservation experts at Disney to attract purple martins to newly installed homes. Those included plastic purple martin decoys and a solar-activated speaker that would play recordings of purple martin bird songs at sunrise.

n Purple martins eat flying insects and do most of their feeding between 150 to 500 feet high in the air. n Purple martins are known to eat beetles, flies, dragonflies, damselflies, leafhoppers, grasshoppers, crickets, butterflies, moths, wasps and bees. n The top flight speed of purple martins is greater than 40 mph.

The Summerport purple martin birdhouse is home to 10 to 12 birds.

“I was weirdly giddy and excited when they finally came,” Baszner said. “I’m a typical guy. I mean, I’ve never been a bird guy, but to think that after all this work they finally came — it’s like the fruits of our labor. And I was also really excited when we got our first egg. I came home, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, we have an egg. We helped create life by putting all the work into this project!’”

It’s difficult to accurately discern how many birds have made their nests in the newly installed Summerport purple martin home, but Baszner estimates about 10 to 12 birds now reside in the home. The birds’ breeding season usually lasts from January to July.

Baszner has also used the nests as an educational tool for students at Keene’s Crossing, who line up along the school’s northern fence line to watch the action for closeup views of the most recent hatchlings in their nests.

“Now that it’s up, it’s been incredibly successful,” he said. “It took off much faster than I was expecting, and we have way more birds than I was expecting. I didn’t think we’d even get any birds the first year. Just because you put up one of these things doesn’t mean birds are going to come, it may take one to three years. But then the first pair came, and they had babies, and now here we are.”

Long ago, purple martins built their nests in hollow trees, but thanks to a practice believed to have begun with Native Americans, the birds now rely on man-made birdhouses for their shelter after migrating to North America for their breeding season. Native Americans would hang up empty gourds for the purple martins, and Europeans settlers followed suit. Early settlers valued the birds because they would eat insects that would otherwise infest or harm their crops. The tradition of setting up martin homes has continued since, although on the West coast, purple martins continue to nest in natural cavities, such as woodpecker holes and tree snags.

y the time Tom “Bull” Hill had walked across the city limits of Ocoee and into Winter Garden, he had met the widows of two Ocoee firefighters and received touching mementos preserving the memories of their husbands.

Charlene Kelley presented a prayer card for James Kelley, who died of thyroid cancer in February, as well as a window sticker depicting angel wings on a fire helmet with James’s station and engine number, 25.

Cathi Greenhill provided an Ocoee Fire Department belt buckle for Kevin Greenhill, who died in 2016, within a year after his retirement.

Hill, a Groveland resident and retired Orange County firefighter, set out on foot March 20 with the expectation of walking solo from Key West to Tallahassee. At the beginning of this journey, it was just one man on a quest to fulfill the wishes of two dying friends to see a presumptive cancer law passed for firefighters.

Five weeks later, Hill is still walking, averaging 15 miles a day — but he has developed an entourage of firefighters and other citizens who are making sure he knows he isn’t alone in his fight.

He has had as many as 200 walking alongside him as the group makes its way up major highways, including West Colonial Drive from Orlando heading west through Ocoee, Winter Garden and Oakland and into Lake County. Each of the departments is providing at least one fire truck to lead a portion of the walk as it goes through the city.

IN OTHER NEWS n City leaders also authorized plans to enhance the landscaping and improve maintenance of the medians on Old Winter Garden Road between Maguire Road and Blackwood Avenue. n The city also awarded community grants to nonprofit organizations for a total of $2,500. Each organization chosen is to receive $500.

The organizations awarded were American Legion Post 109, Bread of Life Fellowship, Ocoee Little League, Rotary Club of Ocoee and the Woman’s Club of Ocoee. District 2 Commissioner Rosemary Wilsen abstained from voting due to her affiliation with two of the organizations.

On Friday, April 20, Bull and his dedicated group of walkers arrived in Winter Garden at lunchtime and were fed by 4 Rivers Smokehouse.

Kelley, who buried her husband just two months ago, hopes Hill’s walk will make a difference.

“It was such an honor and privilege to meet him,” she said.

“This is important because, hopefully, it’ll make a difference for the other firefighters (so they) won’t have to go through what my husband, James Kelley, or Kevin Greenhill went through and something can be done before it’s too late.”

Winter Garden Fire Chief Matt McGrew presented two helmet shields to Hill in memory of Stewart T. Baker, who died of a heart attack while fighting a Tildenville fire in 1981, and Omar Martinez, who died in 2009 of a heart attack just after finishing a shift. Hill said it broke his heart to be given those.

He has added these to the other helmet shields, patches and nametags of fallen firefighters he has received.

He has been handed the precious ashes of several firefighters and asked to carry them with him, too.

The walk started with one backpack and has grown to four plus a hydration pack. The men and women joining in the walk are taking turns sharing the burden of carrying the bags.

Hill, 58, has a Facebook page called My Brothers’ Burden Walk that keep people informed of his walk, which has been nicknamed the March of the Bull. He shares live messages daily, including his location and how far he walked, and he gives kudos to folks who walked with him and fire stations that helped him along the way.

Every day, Hill reads from lists of fallen firefighters given to him as he walks through each jurisdiction. The list numbers more than 600 already, and he’s only halfway through his journey.

A PROMISE

As Hill’s friend and colleague, Orange County Fire Department Engineer Stephen “Shakey” Van-

ravenswaay, lay dying of cancer, he told Hill he wasn’t afraid to die but was ashamed he couldn’t better provide for his family after his death. His promise to his buddy, Shakey, and another dying firefighter, John “J.P.” Perez, would manifest itself in a 650-mile walk through the state.

Hill said the walk was prompted

by Perez, who said to him, “Bull, if you walk, I truly believe something big will happen.”

His goal is to capture the attention of lawmakers in hopes of prompting new laws that will give Florida firefighters the same benefits as those in other states.

Firefighters die of cancer at a higher rate than the general public, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A presumptive cancer law makes firefighters eligible for benefits based on the presumption that their occupation was the cause of certain types of cancer.

About a dozen states, including Florida, do not have a presumptive cancer law.

Beazer earns approval CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Atlanta-based Beazer Homes USA Inc., a home construction company, made an unsolicited purchase offer to the city for 8.5 acres of 12 total acres of cityowned property.

The city originally intended to use the 12-acre property, which was purchased in 2006 for $3.5 million, to construct a new headquarters for the Ocoee Police Department, but the city ultimately relocated the police department to its current location near the intersection of Old Winter Garden Road and South Bluford Avenue.

A proposal to develop the property with a charter school

also was made a year ago, but that failed to move forward on account of strong opposition from concerned Ocoee residents.

According to Assistant City Manager Craig Shadrix, Beazer Homes originally sought to purchase the property for $960,070 for the purpose of constructing townhomes. However, the company now wishes to purchase the 8.5 acres to construct a singlefamily residential development.

“We received a subsequent offer converting that to a single-family home offer, which would consist of approximately 38 lots at the same price,” Shadrix said during the April 17 city commission meeting. “And just yesterday, we received the final offer … of

$1,100,100 for approximately 38 single-family lots.”

The city will retain the remaining 3.5 acres, located in the southwest corner of the property.

STORMWATER SYSTEM

During the April 17 commission meeting, city leaders also selected GAI Consultants Inc. to complete the work for the master downtown stormwater system.

The project, which is estimated to cost about $3.3 million, according to city documents, is to create a master stormwater system to support the anticipated upcoming redevelopment of downtown Ocoee.

County OKs 3-mile stretch of Reams Road widening project This latest approval will permit Orange County’s Transportation and Planning Division to move forward on the 3.1-mile road-widening project for Reams Road.

Orange County commissioners on Tuesday gave final approval to the Reams Road Roadway Conceptual analysis study.

The RCA focused on the segment of the Reams Road corridor from just south of Summerlake Park Boulevard to Taborfield Avenue — a distance of 3.1 miles.

The study, which began in April 2017 and reached completion earlier this year, involved the collection and analysis of traffic data and evaluation of public feedback received from past community meetings.

The project will include a full reconstruction of Reams Road into four lanes, which is currently a two-lane undivided roadway. It will consist of two 11-foot travel lanes in each direction separated by a 19.5-foot raised median, and include a five-foot sidewalk on the south side of the roadway and a 14-foot multi-use trail along the north side.

According to the RCA, between 14,100 to 16,800 vehicles travel Reams Road daily. By 2045, that number is estimated to increase between 26,700 and 29,900 vehicles.

options for the widening project: Centered/Hybrid Alignment, North Alignment and South Alignment.

The Centered/Hybrid Alignment Alternative Design, which is projected to minimize the impacts to surrounding property owners, was selected as the preferred option to combat Reams Road’s ongoing congestion and prepare it for the future transportation needs of the rapidly growing surrounding area.

nearly 16 years. She served two terms as a county commissioner before she was elected in 2010 to the position of Orange County mayor. But because of term limits, Jacobs will need to vacate her office this year.

During her candidacy announcement, Jacobs said she expects many would be surprised by her decision to run for School Board chair but emphasized she has always been engaged in public education and feels passionate about empowering Orange County students and teachers.

“I realize there are probably a lot of people who are going to say, ‘Wow, I didn’t expect that — School Board chair; I wonder why,’ ” Jacobs said. “And I knew that this group of friends would understand why because they know me the best and they know me the longest and they know how incredibly passionate I am about our children, about the potential of our young people and how passionate I am about public education.”

Jacobs explained her experience as county mayor has taught her how to effectively manage a budget and other valuable skills applicable to leading a School Board.

“I’ve learned a few things from being Orange County mayor, and I’m hoping to bring those things to bear as School Board chair if the citizens of Orange County give me that opportunity,” she said. “I’ve learned how to manage a budget of $3 billion with 7,500 employees. I’ve learned how to lead, and I’ve learned when it’s time to fol-

low. I’ve learned the incredible value of collaboration. … But I’ve also learned that one should never compromise on their core values. … And I’ve also learned that this next generation has incredible potential, and they also have the motivation and potential to turn that into reality. But I also realize that the threats they’re facing now need our unwavering support more than ever before.”

Jacobs also praised OCPS for bringing its high-school graduation rate up from 49% in 2000 to its current 93.8% and pointed out its achievement of being one of two school districts to have won a national award in 2014 known as the Broad Prize for Urban Education.

“So Orange County has a lot to be proud of — an awful lot to be proud of in terms of its public schools system,” Jacobs said. “But I don’t think that on something like education, which is so important to a community, that there’s ever a time to rest on your laurels — at least not until every single child in every single classroom has the ability to reach their full potential.”

Jacobs will face Nancy Robbinson, who has been a school board member representing District 6 since 2008; Matthew Fitzpatrick, an assistant director at Orange Technical College; and Robert Prater, a teacher at Oak Hill Elementary School.

The deadline to qualify is June 22, meaning candidates still have time to enter the race before the Aug. 28 election. If no candidates win more than 50% of the vote, a runoff will be held Nov. 6.

West Orange High School has selected 11 Warriors past and present to represent the 2018 Hall of Fame. Retired teacher Peter Abatiello started the program in 2006 to recognize students, teachers and community members for their contributions to the school.

The Hall of Fame program takes place at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the West Orange Country Club,

If you’re feeling fajitas and are in a mood for margaritas, The Whole Enchilada has it all.

The Whole Enchilada opened its first Central Florida location in downtown Winter Garden at 129 W Plant St. on Tuesday, April 17.

The family owned and operated Tex-Mex restaurant offers classic Mexican dishes with an emphasis on freshness.

“We don’t have a freezer here,” said co-owner Vanessa Cardaci, adding the restaurant frequently gets shipments of fresh ingredients multiple times a week.

In addition to freshness, Cardaci said the food at The Whole Enchilada also is healthier compared to other Mexican restaurants.

“We don’t use MSG. We don’t use fillers,” she said. “We don’t use xanthan gum to thicken anything. We don’t use a lot of sodium. Our beans don’t have animal fat in them and neither does our rice. … You could go to gym after you leave here (or) you could go for a run. You’re not going to feel sick, which is amazing.”

For those with a mean appetite, The Whole Enchilada offers a sixpound burrito challenge dubbed “The Ex-Wife Challenge.” The burrito in the challenge is a sixpound Bob Burrito served “enchilada style.” Individuals who complete the challenge in 45 minutes get a T-Shirt and the burrito for-

The Whole Enchilada was founded by Cardaci’s husband, David, and his brother, Drew.

Although the two brothers are originally from Winter Garden, they opened their first location in Fort Lauderdale.

“We’re everything wrapped up into one: we’re a restaurant, we’re fast-casual, we’re a bar and we’re a really good time,” Cardaci said.

“But, we also take food really seriously.”

The chapter, which covers 54 counties in Florida, raised more than $1 million to grant wishes to children suffering from life-threatening conditions.

After bidding on more than 200 items in the silent auction, guests sat down for a three-course meal and presentations from families who were helped by the foundation.

The nonprofit, which raises money for supplies for schools in need, transformed a Rosen Shingle Creek ballroom into a 1990s celebration complete with photo booths, a “Twister” bar, ’90s trivia and “Baywatch” lifeguards overlooking the party. Guests donned their most clever 1990s attire, from “Wayne’s World” to “Clueless,” and bid on the silent auction, mingled and had a great time.

Frank Lee Wells, 71, of Bushnell, Florida, passed away Monday, April 16, 2018, at home, surrounded by his loving family. Frank was born June 1, 1946, in Savannah, Georgia.

He was a member of First Baptist Church of Bushnell and was a retired missionary who served in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

He is survived by his wife, Judy Black Wells, of Bushnell, Florida; son, Tony Wells (Kim) of Eustis, Florida; daughter, Belinda Wells of Ocoee, Florida; grandchildren, Brenden, Bryson, Kemper and Parker; and sister, Tracy Mosqueda (Mike) of Deltona, Florida.

He was born Aug. 17, 1957, in Orlando, Florida.

The Creson family founded Auto Electric Co. on Plant Street, Winter Garden, Florida, in 1947. Jeff took over as sole proprietor in 1990.

He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was an Eagle Scout, avid fisherman, scuba diver and lover of the outdoors.

Helen Dee Roberts, 86, was called to her eternal home by our heavenly Father on Friday, April 13, 2018, where she will join and be joined by family and friends.

Born in Winter Garden, Florida, on Feb. 1, 1932, she was the loving wife of the late Clarence Curtis Roberts Sr. for 56 years.

Helen quickly became a friend to everyone that she met while devoting herself to raising her three children and participating in their interests. Having graduated from Lakeview High School and living most of her life in the cities of Ocoee and Winter Garden, Helen was a loyal community member supporting schools, businesses and local endeavors.

Helen was active in her church and was a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Helen loved a good gab

session and could tell a story with the best of them.

She became an active member of Eastern Star and volunteered frequently to help those in need.

Helen and Curtis Sr. spent their later years in Lakeland and continued the volunteer activities.

She worked as a bookkeeper in accounting and was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her son, Clarence Curtis Roberts Jr. Helen is survived by her children, Brenda D. (Robert) Titus,

During her time in D.C. area, Mary also worked in the Maryland and Virginia school systems. Later, she was a Senior Personnel Administrator for Computer Science Corporation in Arlington.

After she married in 1950, she had three children, Wayne (Janet), Pam and Marie Brodmerkel (Tom). Transfers with the U.S. Navy moved the family to Patuxent River, Maryland,

from Lakeland, and Phillip E. Roberts, from Gainesville; sister, Betty (Merle) Corbett, from Winter Garden, Florida; granddaughter, Kali (Matt) Morgan, from Roswell, Georgia; niece, Leslie (Dan) Fuqua; and greatnephew, Jared Fuqua, from Panama City, Florida.

Lanier Funeral Home in Lakeland handled the arrangements.

Helen was laid to rest next to her beloved husband.

In lieu of flowers prayerfully consider a donation to the following charities in Helen’s memory: VISTE in Lakeland, Florida, viste.org; or Lighthouse for the Blind in Winter Haven, Florida.

Quonset Point, Rhode Island, Hawaii, San Diego, California, and Washington, D.C. Her husband Harold retired after 20 years in the service and went to work for the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service Officer.

She leaves behind a wonderful legacy of four grandchildren: Steven Switzer (Kerrie), Kevin Switzer (Heather), Amanda Brodmerkel (Eric) and Jason Brodmerkel (Kyra). She loved them all and was delighted when the family increased to include six great-grandchildren: Claire, Lydia and Owen Switzer, Ava

and Sadie Switzer and Gunnar Wertz.

We, her children, feel incredibly blessed to have had such a kind, gentle soul to give us guidance and love. Lay down your burdens and rest in peace, Mom. Have fun in heaven with Dad. Memorial services were held Friday, April 6, at Baywoods in Annapolis, Maryland. A private graveside service was held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Gotha.

The West Orange boys lacrosse team continued its undefeated streak last Thursday, April 19, as it took home a District 11 title a close 13-11 win over Lake Minneola. The 14-0 Warriors were led by Mikey Berkman’s six goals and two assists. Matthew Nastasi also contributed three goals as the Warriors outlasted a late rally from the Hawks. Next up for the Warriors will be Bishop Moore in the regional quarterfinals of the state championship.

On senior night in Winter Garden, a trio of softball seniors led the way to West Orange’s 3-2 win over Winter Springs. Lexie Blair went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple, while accounting for a run. Lexi Mosur went 1-for-2 with an RBI, and Julia Sniffen 1-for-4 and added an RBI herself — helping the Warriors sneak past the pesky pitching of the Bears.

Back home the past few weeks following his Pro Day at the University of Kentucky March 23, the Winter Garden native is training daily ahead of the NFL draft. In doing so, Johnson is experiencing flashbacks to when he was a West Orange Warrior, putting in work to get noticed by college programs.

It was all Warriors in the District 9 championship game against East Ridge, as the West Orange girls lacrosse team took home the title in a 10-4 win. The Warriors, now 14-4 on the season and 7-0 in district, will start the state playoffs at home as they take on Lake Highland Prep Thursday, April 26.

Despite falling in a 6-1 loss to Boone, it wasn’t all bad for Ocoee last Tuesday, April 17. The Knights’ Ethan Long had a strong offensive showing as he went 2-for-2 — blasting a home run that was only scoring the Knights had that night.

Now Johnson is hoping either to hear his name called during the draft April 26 to 28 or to ink a deal as an undrafted free agent — but the grind hasn’t changed.

“It feels like high school all over again, trying to get those (scholarship) offers — but kind of on a different level, now,” Johnson said, sitting in the bleachers at Raymond Screws Field. “I just been out here every day continuing to grind.”

encouraged and inspired by Julien Williams, one of the owners of Fusion, to give the West Oaks Mall consideration when she began to explore possibly opening her own studio. Riley Fromberg After honing her chops at the JV level last year, Riley Fromberg is becoming a force on the mound for the Warriors. In 18 appearances Fromberg has gone 9-2 while picking up two complete games and three saves. Through 68.2 innings pitched, she holds a solid 1.83 ERA while striking out 44. This sophomore sensation sees no signs of slumping as she helps lead the Warriors into the postseason.

What is your favorite part about playing softball?

Many play softball, because they feel like they have to play, but I just generally love the sport. I love coming out here and getting to compete with my friends and teammates, and learning new things every day from my coaches.

How did you first get into softball?

I played T-ball with the boys, so my brothers kind of played baseball, and my dad played on a men’s fast-pitch softball team.

I was a kid and wanted to try everything, and softball ended up being my favorite.

So far, what has been the biggest highlight of the your playing time at West Orange?

Coming in and being able to play varsity softball with Landry (Newgent), and being able to help her with pitching and for her being able to help me with pitching — we kind of complement each other a lot. I feel like when we are out on the field, and we go in for each other, that’s always a highlight.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received from a coach?

Ask questions — that’s a big one, whether it be about softball or not. And always work from ahead in the batter’s count — slow down. Coach Todd (LaNeave) always tells me, “Tempo.”

What’s your favorite thing to do in your spare time?

I’m a part of Best Buddies, and I love spending time with my Best Buddies. We some times go get ice cream or go to the mall — I love including them in everything that I can. They’re all great people.

If you could only watch one movie or show for the rest of your life, what would it be?

I think I’m going to have to go with “Heroes” — I love that show.

If you could meet one celebrity, who would it be and why?

I would love to meet Michael Jackson or Meghan Trainor. I like the way Meghan Trainor looks on people — how she involves everyone and (talks about) self love. Michael Jackson — it would just be cool to say you met him.

What are your plans after high school?

I would love to go to the University of Tampa and play, or Flagler — I want to stay in Florida. I want to go into behavioral therapy with kids with special needs.

unrelated disciplines that are now neighbors.

“I knew this mall when it was the place to be … I really saw (opening Barre Strong) as this awesome opportunity to be a part of the solution of saving these malls,” Bowersox said. “It’s the perfect marriage of really feeling like a woman (doing barre) and then coming over to Fusion and kicking some butt — it really does make you feel so powerful.”

Barre Strong celebrated its grand opening April 21, and the ownership team of Fusion X-cel is excited to have it just two doors down.

“I just feel like any business here in the West Oaks Mall is going to be good business,” Williams said. “What (Barre Strong) does supplements what we do at Fusion X-cel.

(Bowersox) bringing her type of clientele that she has will help revitalize this mall.”

SETTING THE BARRE

Barre has played a big role in Bowersox’s life the last few years, with the opening of her studio representing only the latest progression. As a former competitive and collegiate cheerleader, as well as a dancer, Bowersox began to seek a fitness alternative two years ago that would help her rehab her knees and feet in a lowimpact setting.

A ballet-inspired form of fitness that incorporates elements of pilates and yoga, barre seemed to be the perfect fit. It wasn’t long after Bowersox found a studio in the Windermere area that she became hooked.

“It rehabbed my body so quickly … I just kind of became obsessed,” Bowersox said.

“Everyone belongs in barre because it’s so adaptable.”

Her instructor at the time noticed Boxersox’s enthusiasm and could tell she had a background as an athlete and encouraged her to become a certified instructor. She did and eventually left her corporate job of more than 17 years to immerse herself back into the fitness world.

When the studio at which she was teaching at closed a little more than a year ago, clients of hers suggested she open her own space. That set Bowersox on the year-long path to last Saturday’s grand opening.

“I think that what makes (barre) so attractive is there’s a gap in the fitness world for it — it’s a functional format that is low-impact and it’s for all body types,” Bowersox said. “(Opening Barre Strong) really was out of a need to have a barre studio where I could teach the method that I loved and still have it on this side of town — there was really a need for it.”

RECIPROCITY

The details are still being fleshed out, but Bowersox said she has spoken with Williams and his partner, Fusion fitness coach Edwin Carmichael, about exploring incentive structures such as reciprocal memberships or attractive drop-in rates to encourage her mostly female clientele to give Fusion a shot as a complementary fitness discipline.

“I think the benefit they get to doing boxing is just building on that empowerment,” Bowersox said. “It’s why I think it’s such a good marriage.”

Bowersox also wouldn’t mind getting a few of the clients at Fusion — some of whom are world-class fighters — to drop

in for a class or two at her studio, and Carmichael believes the benefits can be reciprocal.

“Doing both will help the clients,” Carmichael said.

“We can teach them the force of their flexibility. Barre is more flexibility and we’re more power and speed. …

If our clients come over (to Barre Strong), they can gain the flexibility-side of fitness.

It’s a win-win situation for everybody.”

In the end, both ownership teams are excited about their “fitness wing” of the West Oaks Mall and about being a part of a resurgence for the mall. They’re also excited about being an asset to the community.

“Fitness changes people’s lives,” Bowersox said. “I’m devoted to and excited by the idea of what fitness can do for the individual and then what the individual can do for the community.”

Faith fuels NFL dream CONTINUED FROM PAGE 17

To this point, Johnson has made a career out of being an underdog. Ask the coaching staff at West Orange, and they’ll tell you he was criminally under-recruited as a varsity player, noting that some programs hardly gave him a look. “(West Orange wide receivers) coach (Joe) Light can tell you, every day I’d see (teammates) getting offers — I just couldn’t wait to get my first offer,” Johnson said. “I always thought I had the short end of the stick, but I just feel like that was God’s plan. That’s my path, and I just take it for what it is. It makes me go a little harder with a chip on my shoulder.”

That chip on his shoulder seems to have paid dividends.

Johnson found a landing spot at Kentucky, where in four seasons for the Wildcats, he was a reliable receiver and dynamic playmaker.

He had 155 catches for Kentucky during his career, good for 2,089 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns — all while playing a rugged conference schedule in the Southeastern Conference.

Pro scouts interested in him based on his statistical collegiate production also are likely to have been impressed with his Pro Day performance. His 40.5-inch vertical jump and his 40-yard dash times of 4.39 and 4.42 would have had him among the top performers at the NFL draft combine — had he been invited.

He was not, and that is why the former West Orange Wildcat keeps his head down and continues to work. Even with his dream within reach, he still is playing the role of the underdog.

“I always had NFL dreams and aspirations … probably my sophomore year and junior year, that’s when agents starting reaching out,” Johnson said. “Even then, I kind of still didn’t believe it (could happen).”

It could, though, whether he hears his name called during the three-day draft or signs a contract as an undrafted

free agent with any of several teams who have expressed interest in his abilities to his agent. The uncertainty can be challenging, but Johnson said he is leaning on family, friends and faith as he navigates this stretch.

“Faith, that’s No. 1,” Johnson said. “Without that, there’s just so much going on. If you don’t have a focus on God, you’ll be lost. You’ve got to rely on faith.”

In the meantime, he is excited to be back in West Orange, where so much of the foundation of his football career was laid — and where familiar faces such as Warriors coach Bob Head and others are happy to unlock the weight room so he can lift.

“There’s nothing better than that … coming back home and getting back to the basics, that’s the bread and butter,” Johnson said. “It keeps me humble.”

FHSAA-sponsored op-ed a reminder to take scholarship pursuit in stride

bout a month ago, the Florida High School Athletic Association sent a media release containing an op-ed piece titled, “The Truth about Sports Scholarships.”

Authored by Bob Gardner, executive director of the National Federation of State High School Associations, and George Tomyn, executive director of the FHSAA, the piece has appeared in publications around the state and beyond.

It is a rebuke of sorts of the treatment by some parents of the college scholarship for their son or daughter as a holy grail, and it highlights what the authors perceive as some of the benefits of high-school sports over club and travel sports. It is also a rebuke of specializing in and playing one sport yearround — an increasingly popular trend that student-athletes continue to gravitate toward at younger ages.

Some of the information cited is illuminating. Studies suggest that fewer than 2% of all high-school athletes (one in 54) will play Division I athletics; many Division I athletic scholarships do not cover as much of the costs of attendance as is popularly believed; and finally, even when an athlete beats the odds and achieves a Division I scholarship, its payout may not come close to the amount of money spent on years of travel sports and showcases.

Personally, while I’m obviously a big fan of high-school sports, I’m also not a big detractor of club sports.

I get it — this is how recruiting has evolved, and in a lot of ways, it makes sense. It is much easier for a college basketball coach to attend an AAU showcase with hundreds of teams and thousands of players in one place on a Saturday during the offseason than to try to squeeze in high-school games on weeknights.

I also understand how a junior or senior two-sport athlete may want to focus in on one of those sports for his or her final year or two of high school.

The truth, though, is when you talk to as many young athletes as I have interviewed over the years, you meet kids who are burned out, in the process of becoming burned out or

have — at age 15, for instance — already burned out on one sport and moved on to another.

Something you won’t read about as often is that even athletes who make it to college often burn out there and return home or transfer after a few semesters. College sports can be pretty great, but they also can be pretty cut-throat, especially at high-profile programs where the livelihood of coaches depends on wins and losses.

Then again, I’d be remiss if I didn’t note some teens love the grind and thrive on the structure a scholarship pursuit lends to their adolescence.

Absent of a scathing hot take on the matter or a one-sizefits-all solution, I do know experience and years of observation have taught me that more athletes and their parents might benefit from taking things in stride and enjoying the ride.

High-school sports are a really cool thing.

They are fun, and they are rooted in community.

It’s something I’m reminded of when I see someone such as Dr. Phillips senior Daniel Love — a basketball star who will play collegiately at Mercer — playing for the Panthers’ boys volleyball team this spring.

After all, why not make a few more memories in your final days as high-school senior?

I admire the hard work and dedication of our studentathletes here in West and Southwest Orange and enjoy reporting on them when they earn scholarship offers and ink an NLI. It’s an incredible thing, and we know from reader response that the community takes pride in these achievements.

But consider this a friendly reminder to stop and smell the roses a bit and enjoy the ride. Whether it ends with an athletic scholarship or not, a high-school sports career is a pretty wonderful time.

College sports can be pretty great, but they also can be pretty cutthroat, especially at high-profile programs where the livelihood of coaches depends on wins and losses.
