ordan Baszner does not consider himself much of a bird enthusiast; he only learned what a purple martin was three years ago. But when the first pair of purple martins showed up at the 22-compartment birdhouse he spent a year planning, he was ecstatic.

The birdhouse, which looks almost like a miniature condominium, is located near a retention pond in the Summerport neighborhood right outside the Keene’s Crossing Elementary School campus.

Baszner, who manages science and environmental education at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, is also part of the purple martin conservation project at Disney, which has erected about 20 martin homes throughout its grounds.

Using the knowledge he learned at Disney, Baszner set out to obtain approval from his neighborhood’s HOA to establish a martin home in his own neighborhood.

“This particular bird species prefers open areas so that they’re not near trees where hawks and eagles might get them and they can have a 360-degree view around them,” Baszner said. “So I was looking at this one area in our neighborhood that was near the school and near water and thought, ‘This is a perfect location.’

“So I went ahead and asked our HOA board and the process took about a year, because we also had to get approvals from neighbors,” he said. “Once we got the OK, I asked some of my Disney friends who work with me on the purple martin project to come help me with the construction.”

Baszner used tactics he learned from conservation experts at Disney to attract purple martins to newly installed homes. Those

included plastic purple martin decoys and a solar-activated speaker that would play recordings of purple martin bird songs at sunrise.

“I was weirdly giddy and excited when they finally came,” Baszner said. “I’m a typical guy. I mean, I’ve never been a bird guy, but to think that after all this work they finally came — it’s like the fruits of our labor. And I was also really excited when we got our first egg. I came home, and I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, we have an egg. We helped create life by putting all the work into this project!’”

It’s difficult to accurately discern how many birds have made their nests in the newly installed Summerport purple martin home, but Baszner estimates about 10 to 12 birds now reside in the home. The birds’ breeding season usually lasts from January to July.

Baszner has also used the nests as an educational tool for students at Keene’s Crossing, who line up along the school’s northern fence line to watch the action for close-up views of the most recent hatchlings in their nests.

incredibly successful,” he said. “It took off much faster than I was expecting, and we have way more birds than I was expecting. I didn’t think we’d even get any birds the first year. Just because you put up one of these things doesn’t mean birds are going to come, it may take one to three years. But then the first pair came, and they had babies, and now here we are.”

Long ago, purple martins built their nests in hollow trees, but thanks to a practice believed to have begun with Native Americans, the birds now rely on man-made birdhouses for their shelter after migrating to North America for their breeding season.

Native Americans would hang up empty gourds for the purple martins, and Europeans settlers followed suit. Early settlers valued the birds because they would eat insects that would otherwise infest or harm their crops.

The tradition of setting up martin homes has continued since, although on the West coast, purple martins continue to nest in natural cavities, such as woodpecker holes and tree snags.

County OKs 3-mile stretch of Reams road project GABBY BAQUERO NEWS EDITOR

Orange County commissioners on Tuesday gave final approval to the Reams Road Roadway Conceptual analysis study.

The RCA focused on the segment of the Reams Road corridor from just south of Summerlake Park Boulevard to Taborfield Avenue — a distance of 3.1 miles.

The study, which began in April 2017 and reached completion earlier this year, involved the collection and analysis of traffic data and evaluation of public feedback received from past community meetings.

The project will include a full reconstruction of Reams Road

into four lanes, which is currently a two-lane undivided roadway. It will consist of two 11-foot travel lanes in each direction separated by a 19.5-foot raised median, and include a five-foot sidewalk on the south side of the roadway and a 14-foot multi-use trail along the

north side.

According to the RCA, between 14,100 to 16,800 vehicles travel Reams Road daily. By 2045, that number is estimated to increase between 26,700 and 29,900 vehicles.

During community meetings, county officials presented residents with three roadway design options for the widening project: Centered/Hybrid Alignment, North Alignment and South Alignment.

The Centered/Hybrid Alignment Alternative Design, which is projected to minimize the impacts to surrounding property owners, was selected as the preferred option to combat Reams Road’s ongoing congestion and prepare it

for the future transportation needs of the rapidly growing surrounding area.

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2021 and is expected to

The male suspect, James Bauday, 48, initially was being sought by the Orlando Police Department in connection with a violent carjacking that occurred at about 9 a.m. Thursday, April 19, near the area of ConroyWindermere and Kirkman roads.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, the carjacking investigation was later turned over to OCSO when it was discovered that the carjacking suspect was also a suspect in a Windermere homicide case.

People liked it, because they would read the paper and I had the music on and we talked. They liked it a lot and felt like they were at home. I built a customer base there.”

ONE OF A KIND

Eventually, he began looking for his next venture and came across the opening at V’s Barbershop.

This is the first time he’d ever shined shoes in a barbershop.

“V’s was founded with the idea of capturing that old-school barbershop experience,” said owner Lawrence Johnson. “We reserve a special place for shoe-shiners when we can find them. Most V’s shops around the country have a shoe-shiner; some, because of location or the lack of availability, don’t. We (Hector and I) were fortunate enough to meet each other. With that, we feel like we have a very special location here in Windermere.”

As Johnson got to know Hidalgo and learned about his experience and personality, he knew he’d found a diamond in the rough. Hidalgo has a wealth of life experience, stories and relationships he has built with the Orlando community over the years, which Johnson believes adds to the sense of nostalgia V’s aims to create.

“Hector is one of a kind,” Johnson said. “You’re not going

to find many people like him.

He’s very caring, he is someone that takes his time to connect with people when they allow it. At the same time, he’s very respectful of others. I think what I value the most about Hector is the authenticity of his love for serving others. What better way to demonstrate that than shining shoes?

“A lot of times, he’s doing it complimentary as part of our service, trying to earn that trust and confidence so they’ll bring shoes to him on a regular basis and become customers for life,” Johnson said.

Hidalgo’s dream is to one day be able to open his own shoeshining parlor — an extension of the lifelong passion he’s honed and holds so close to his heart.

“It’s a lost art,” Hidalgo said. “I like to deal with giving people the finishing touch. When they dress up, shoes are very important.

When you go to an interview or you’re going to work in an office or something, you want to look sharp. They look you over from top to bottom, and it makes a lot of difference when you’re dressed and have shiny shoes. That’s the finishing touch of the way you’re dressed.”

“When you have a customer that comes into the shop and they see that we have a shoe-shiner their eyes just light up,” Johnson said. “It’s definitely been an amazing experience.”

Hidalgo, an Apopka resident, was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He first picked up shoeshining casually at age 12. It was something he was curious about, having watched other kids set up shoe-shining stops in subway stations, but it wasn’t something he began doing professionally until he was 14.

He worked as a shoe salesman for Thom McAn in Brooklyn in the 1970s and made his way up to assistant manager. Learning the art of shoe-shining came from watching the shop’s master shoeshiner.

“He said he wanted me to be a master shoe-shiner and follow in his steps,” Hidalgo said. “I saw how he shined and everything, step by step. I was next to him most of the time to start. Then I did a little, step by step, and a couple hours after watching him, he saw what I could do. I learned pretty quick.”

It was an old-fashioned art with which Hidalgo, now 65, quickly fell in love. He spent the next seven to eight years in Brooklyn selling and shining shoes before moving to Puerto Rico to be closer to his family.

While in Puerto Rico he put shoe-shining to the wayside as he focused on his career in sales.

He always had a knack for selling shoes and clothes.

In the mid-1980s, Hidalgo made the move again, but this time to the Orlando area, where he’s been ever since. He dived right back into shining shoes at places such as Fashion Square Mall, the Sheraton Orlando and The Westin Lake Mary. Clients included judges, business professionals and even Orlando Magic staff. He shined shoes in clients’ homes and in car dealerships, and also trained a few young shoeshiners himself.

“At the Sheraton … I had a nice room they turned into a place to shine shoes,” he said. “The manager got me a $4,500 chair, a good wooden, old-fashioned

dead from a gunshot wound in her home, located at 2721 Ingeborg Court in Windermere, on Thursday morning. The carjacking victim from that morning is her daughter.

When Sheriff’s Office deputies tracked down the suspect and tried to take him into custody, the man was shot and killed.

“We do believe a dangerous individual is off the streets of Orange County — an individual that was wanted on homicide charges from yesterday involving an 82-year-old woman, Mrs. Elfriede Asendorf, from West Orange County in the Windermere area,” said OCSO Sheriff Jerry Demings in a press conference held Friday. “So it appears that investigation culminated here tonight with the shooting of this subject.”

Demings added the two deputies involved in Bauday’s fatal shooting — Sgt. Bruce Vail and Cpl. Randolph Hovland — gave the suspect specific instructions, which he failed to comply with.

Both deputies shot him because they believed he was in possession of a weapon, Demings said.

“When the felony units approached him, it was believed that he was armed at the time and made some type of furtive movement, and he was shot,” Demings said. “We’re not certain

how many rounds were fired tonight, but it appears it was probably less than a half-dozen rounds. The subject was mortally wounded.”

The deputy-involved shooting is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Vail has been employed by OCSO since March 1994, and Hovland has been employed with OCSO since July 1998. Both deputies have been reassigned to administrative duties pending FDLE’s investigation.

“It’s Crohn’s disease, which is a disease that affects your colon,” she said. “It gives you stomach pain. It can make you really tired.

She will continue to share her experience with the disease, even after recently being told she’s in remission. Katelyn takes several pills daily, and every six weeks, she has to get an infusion of Remicade.

“The infusion keeps her in remission,” said her mother, Michelle Carter. “If we stop the medicine, the symptoms come back.”

THE DIAGNOSIS

Brian and Michelle Carter, of Windermere, thought their daughter was lactose intolerant because of constant stomach aches, but they knew they needed to seek professional help when changing her diet didn’t relieve the pain.

The Lake Whitney Elementary School fifth-grader went through a battery of tests — including two colonoscopies — to get a diagnosis.

“The colonoscopy wasn’t so bad; it was the prep that was bad,” Katelyn said. “It was scary, because

I didn’t really know what to expect.

My GI doctor said the procedure is nothing like the prep. … I had to have a second one a year later to make sure.”

If a positive attitude is important for healing, then Katelyn should have no problem.

“For the MRE (magnetic resonance elastography), they make you lay still for a really long time,” she said. “The best part is the bed vibrates so it feels like a massage.

But you get to watch a movie so you’re distracted. I got to watch ‘Finding Nemo.’ The second time I watched ‘Finding Dory.’”

Getting a diagnosis was important for another reason.

“They said if we wouldn’t have caught it, she would have gotten cancer,” Michelle Carter said.

“For the last two years, I’ve written a letter and talked to my principal,” she said. “There’s a Crohn’s and Colitis Week in December, and I asked if we could find a reasonable date in that week where the whole school can wear purple. And everyone wore purple. Last year, I bumped it up and asked everyone to bring a $1 and wear purple.”

Katelyn has been named the Youth Honored Hero for 2018 and will participate in the April 28 Take Steps Walk, hosted by the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation. Her team, Katelyn’s Warriors, is getting close to its $2,800 goal.

attitude. She had to write an essay, which is printed on fliers being handed out to promote the walk, and she was present at last month’s walk kickoff at Dave & Buster’s in Orlando.

Katelyn will join the adult heroes onstage during the walk this weeked. Her younger sister, Alexis, is one of Katelyn’s warriors and will be walking alongside her sister.

She is always ready with a hug and a stuffed animal whenever Katelyn isn’t feeling well.

Katelyn, who will attend Foundation Academy next year as a sixth-grader, wrote in her essay: “Now I’m in remission, which is amazing, and I feel great! I love to do math, art, music and archery.

Now that I have more energy, I also like to do CrossFit. I feel like I wouldn’t have gotten this far without my friends and family close by my side, especially my little sister, Alexis, who is always there for me.”

Jacobs, 60, announced her candidacy for the position outside of the Orange County Supervisor of Elections headquarters on April 11 alongside friends and educators.

Jacobs, who has four children, has served in public office for nearly 16 years. She served two terms as a county commissioner before she was elected in 2010 to the position of Orange County Mayor. But because to term limits, Jacobs will need to vacate her office this year.

D u r i n g h e r ca n d i d a cy announcement, Jacobs said she expects many would be surprised by her decision to run for School Board chair but emphasized she has always been engaged with education and feels passionate about empowering Orange County students and teachers.

“I realize there are probably a lot of people who are going to say, ‘Wow, I didn’t expect that — School Board chair; I wonder why,’” Jacobs said. “And I knew that this group of friends would understand why because they know me the best and they know me the longest and they know how incredibly passionate I am about our children, about the potential of our young people and how passionate I am about public education.”

Jacobs believes her experience as county mayor has taught her how to effectively manage a budget and other valuable skills applicable to leading a School Board.

“I’ve learned a few things from being Orange County mayor, and I’m hoping to bring those things to bear as School Board chair if the citizens of Orange County give me that opportunity,” she said. “I’ve learned how to manage a budget of $3 billion with 7,500 employees. I’ve learned how to lead, and I’ve learned when it’s time to follow. I’ve learned the incredible value of collaboration. … But I’ve also learned that one should never compromise on their core values. … And I’ve also learned that this next generation has incredible potential, and they also have the motivation and potential to turn that into reality. But I also realize that the threats they’re facing now need our unwavering support more than ever before.”

Jacobs also praised Orange County Public Schools for bringing its high-school graduation rate up from 49% in 2000 to its current 93.8% and pointed out its achievement of being one of two school districts to have won a national award in 2014 known as the Broad Prize for Urban Education.

Jacobs will face Nancy Robbinson, who has been a school board member representing District 6 since 2008; Matthew Fitzpatrick, an assistant director at Orange Technical College; and Robert Prater, a teacher at Oak Hill Elementary School.

The deadline to qualify is June 22, meaning candidates still have time to enter the race before the Aug. 28 election. If no candidate wins more than 50% of the vote, a runoff will be held Nov. 6.

The chapter, which covers 54 counties in Florida, raised more than $1 million to grant wishes to children suffering from life-threatening conditions.

After bidding on more than 200 items in the silent auction, guests sat down for a three-course meal and presentations from families who were helped by the foundation.

“Kiss Me Kate” tells the tale of Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi — who are divorced — as they work on a production of Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew.”

“It’s a comic version of ‘Taming of the Shrew’ — it’s done very tongue-in-cheek,” WHS music theater and chorus teacher Linda Boot said. “We have extremely talented students and a great parent support team and a supportive community who really wanted to see us end the year with a big production with lots of singing and dancing and characters and big sets and all that stuff. … There’s a lot of on- and- off-stage antics.”

The production showcases the hard work and dedication of the

WHS theater students as they only had about a month to put it all together, said Jonathan Jackson, a co-sponsor for the school’s theater department and technical director the school’s production of “Kiss Me Kate.”

“This production (had) a short timeline,” Jackson said. “It’s a big show with a big cast, and trying to get it all up off the ground with everything else going on — testing, and (other) things that these students are doing — it’s sort of adding one more thing to their plate. But it’s exciting to see them really, really power through.”

Boot added that because Windermere High is a new school, the lack of resources also posed a challenge.

“We don’t have a large prop closet,” Boot said. “We don’t have costumes. We don’t even have building supplies and stuff. ...

We’ve had to make do with what we have, and it’s extra challenging to get everything you need to put on a production.”

Junior Sam Marzella, 17, will play the role of Fred Graham.

“He’s the leading baritone, which fits my style of singing and acting,” Marzella said. “He is egotistical, but he has no reason to be. … He’s a jerk, but he’s not always trying to be.”

Junior Ashley Lambros will portray Lilli Vanessi. Unlike Marzella — who relates to his character — Lambros said hers is counter to her nature.

“Lilli Vanessi is like the exact opposite of me,” Lambros said.

“I’m very outgoing and kind — I hope — to everyone. And Lilli is kind of — you know — not. It’s interesting to see where we relate and where we don’t.”

Lambros added this will the first time she has ever been cast in a leading female role throughout her experience taking theater classes in middle school and high school. The day the cast list came out, Lambros could not hide her excitement — even while at Epcot.

“I was so nervous the whole time because I didn’t know if I was going to get it or not,” Lambros said. “There’s a point where you get used to being turned down and not getting it. I was at Epcot (when) the cast list came out and then when I found out (I got the role), I literally screamed in the middle of Epcot, and I grabbed my mom, and I hugged her.”

Brooklyn Schwetje, 16, is a junior and dance captain for the production. She also is part of the ensemble for the show and assisted with the choreography.

“I learned everyone’s dances — even if I’m not in them,” Schwetje said. “We’ve been working on the dance numbers for about three weeks. … It’s a lot of fun.”

Jeffery Richard Creson, 60, of Montverde, Florida, passed away Monday, April 16, 2018. He was born Aug. 17, 1957, in Orlando, Florida.

The Creson family founded Auto Electric Co. on Plant Street, Winter Garden, Florida, in 1947.

Jeff took over as sole proprietor in 1990.

He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He was an Eagle Scout, avid fisherman, scuba diver and lover of the outdoors.

Mr. Creson is preceded in death by his father, Richard John Creson.

Mary Switzer was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was devoted to her husband of 50 years, Harold E. Switzer. He preceded her in death in 2000 and welcomed her to heaven this week.

Mary was born June 2, 1928, in Saugus, Massachusetts. Her father, Robert F. Gulledge, worked at Esso, and her mother, Irene, was a housewife. After moving away from home, she worked for U.S. Navy Department in downtown Washington, D.C., and at the annex in Arlington, Virginia.

She was a receptionist and secretary while working for the Navy.

She lived in Arlington Farms, which is now part of the Arlington Cemetery, where 10 dormitories were built to house women who were recruited by the U.S. Civil Service Commission to work government jobs in and around D.C. During her time in D.C. area, Mary also worked in the Maryland and Virginia school systems.

Later, she was a Senior Personnel Administrator for Computer Science Corporation in Arlington.

After she married in 1950, she had three children, Wayne (Janet), Pam and Marie Brodmerkel (Tom).

Transfers with the U.S. Navy moved the family to Patuxent River, Maryland, Quonset Point, Rhode Island, Hawaii, San Diego, California, and Washington, D.C.

Her husband Harold retired after 20 years in the service and went to work for the U.S. State Department as a Foreign Service Officer.

She leaves behind a wonderful legacy of four grandchildren: Steven Switzer (Kerrie), Kevin Switzer (Heather), Amanda Brodmerkel (Eric) and Jason Brodmerkel (Kyra). She loved them all and was delighted when the family increased to include six great-grandchildren: Claire, Lydia and Owen Switzer, Ava and Sadie Switzer and Gunnar Wertz.

We, her children, feel incredibly blessed to have had such a kind, gentle soul to give us guidance and love. Lay down your burdens and rest in peace, Mom. Have fun in heaven with Dad. Memorial services were held Friday, April 6, at Baywoods in Annapolis, Maryland. A private graveside service was held at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, April 7, at Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home in Gotha.

Helen was active in her church and was a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Helen loved a good gab session and could tell a story with the best of them.

She became an active member of Eastern Star and volunteered frequently to help those in need.

Helen and Curtis Sr. spent their later years in Lakeland and continued the volunteer activities.

Start ’em young Although the youth-sports league Horizon West Youth Sports & Cheer is in its inaugural spring season, much like the area it serves, it’s growing — and fast.

Olympia’s Jeslyn Whitehead had an impressive night on Friday in a 10-0 win over Ocoee. As a dual threat, Whitehead pitched a complete game as he shut out the Knights and picked up five strikeouts.

Offensively, Whitehead went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.

The Dr. Phillips softball team kept trucking along in a 16-0 rout of Haines City Friday, April 20. The Panthers’ Megan Rush had an outstanding offensive performance, going 3-for-4 and accounting for 4 RBI. Pitcher Raychel Trocki helped hold the Hornets scoreless, as she went five scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts. Trocki also added a run.

Both Olympia’s boys and girls tennis teams picked up District 3 titles this past week. For the boys, Juan Bianchi, Alexey Timokhine, Ricardo LaVieri and Kapindra Singh picked up wins in singles play, while Bianchi/Timokhine picked up a win in doubles. For the girls, Annalise Vetter notched a win in singles, while Vetter/Julianna Ciccantelli took home a win in doubles play.

The Dr. Phillips girls lacrosse team had a big night Friday, April 20, as the Panthers (15-4) upset the defending state champion Bishop Moore Hornets (17-2) to take home the District 12 title in a close 11-10 win.

The Panthers look to keep their winning ways going as they take on Viera in regional quarterfinal play Thursday, April 26.

o you have what it takes to be a Wolverine?

That’s the question the organizers of Horizon West Youth Sports & Cheer have for potential youth athletes as they continue to recruit and grow the brand-new sports league.

Three-year-old Gracelynn Wood, daughter of HWYSC president Dale Wood, has been dubbed the cheer team’s “mascot.”

HWYSC is the brainchild of local parents, including league president and Horizon West resident

Dale Wood, who wanted a youthsports organization close to home for their children.

Wood has coached Upward Sports at First Baptist Church Windermere for about five years, and he and other parents had children who played previously in other local youth leagues.

However, they realized they didn’t have a league that would help feed the Horizon West-area schools.

The newly opened Barre Strong sits just two doors down from Fusion X-cel Performance, an MMA, boxing and fitness center.

The proximity of the two may seem like a coincidence — the disciplines are an odd couple of sorts — but they are not neighbors by accident.

Winter Garden resident Elizabeth Bowersox, the owner of Barre Strong, said she was encouraged and inspired by Julien Williams, one of the owners of Fusion, to give the West Oaks Mall consideration when she began to explore possibly opening her own studio. said. “Then we said, ‘Let’s (be the) Horizon West Wolverines,’ because that’s where we all live. We started in November, and now we have a league running. It’s been a lot of work, but we have things happening.

With coaches and everything we have 15 to 17 people working four days a week making things happen. Everybody’s a volunteer; it’s a nonprofit. We all just work for the kids.”

The organization borrows its mascot from Windermere High and aims to help train its youth athletes in the ways of sportsmanship, attitude, teamwork, academic excellence and integrity. After all, many of these kids will one day become Windermere Wolverines themselves.

Most of the volunteers and coaches have children involved in some way, Wood said. HWYSC currently offers flag football and cheerleading but looks to expand its athletic offerings as it grows. Practices for tackle football should begin in July, he said.

“We’re trying to get these (sports) running right first, but we’re definitely looking into doing other sports for the area,” he said. “We start our practices in July for tackle football and mini camps and things like that, and the season will start around the first of August. We’re working on putting a schedule together for that to schedule things out

Windermere Elementary School fourth-grader Tyler Arafet has been killing it on the baseball diamond. He recently was chosen for the USSSA All American 10U Atlantic region team. That team includes players form Florida, Georgia and South Carolina and will be playing Aug. 4 to 11 in Viera. Tyler currently plays baseball for Chandler 10U and leads his team in RBIs, home runs and doubles. Tyler has hit three home runs so far this season through five tournaments, but his most impressive stat comes from his pitching — 39 batters struck out through 19 innings, including his first no-hitter.

What do you think of being chosen for the Atlantic region team?

I feel excited. I feel like I had a good tryout. I’m excited to meet new people and to also play against the best of the best competition.

What do you like most about playing baseball?

I like playing with my friends, and I like the challenge. I do like the competition, too.

What do you think is your biggest strength?

It’s between hitting and pitching.

What’s your goal with baseball right now?

Right now, it’s to make it to University of Florida.

What’s your favorite baseball team?

The Yankees are my favorite

“I knew this mall when it was the place to be … I really saw (opening Barre Strong) as this awesome opportunity to be a part of the solution of saving these malls,” Bowersox said. “It’s the perfect marriage of really feeling like a woman (doing barre) and then coming over to Fusion and kicking some butt — it really does make you feel so powerful.”

“It’s fun; I don’t mind having the pressure all on me,” he said.

“I wanted to play this year, because I’m very competitive and have a lot for friends on the team.”

“He’s excited about the games coming up,” his mother, Rhonda Walker, said. “When he played flag before, he liked playing that because a lot of people got to be involved in the game and it wasn’t just the select three people (or something). It’s more of a team event. … It’s not as intense in the spring. I think he’s just excited about playing with his friends and getting out and getting exercise.”

And with a new youth sports league in a fast-growing area, the word already is spreading.

with the school and the use of the stadium.”

Right now, the league, which belongs to the Mid Florida Football and Cheerleading Conference, holds its practices at the field at Lifebridge Church. However, it will head to the Windermere High football practice field Saturday, April 28, for a game. Wood hopes to be able to use the stadium this fall for more games.

X-cel is excited to have it just two doors down.

“I just feel like any business here in the West Oaks Mall is going to be good business,” Williams said. “What (Barre Strong) does supplements what we do at Fusion X-cel.

SETTING THE BARRE

Barre has played a big role in Bowersox’s life the last few years, with the opening of her studio representing only the latest progression. As a former competitive and collegiate cheerleader, as well as a dancer, Bowersox began to seek a fitness alternative two years ago that would help her rehab her knees and feet in a lowimpact setting.

A ballet-inspired form of fitness that incorporates elements of pilates and yoga, barre seemed to be the perfect fit. It wasn’t long after Bowersox found a studio in the Windermere area that she became hooked.

“It rehabbed my body so quickly … I just kind of became obsessed,” Bowersox said.

“Everyone belongs in barre because it’s so adaptable.”

The details are still being fleshed out, but Bowersox said she has spoken with Williams and his partner, Fusion fitness coach Edwin Carmichael, about exploring incentive structures such as recipro-

had imagined the organization might have 40 athletes. Thus far HWYSC has about 80 — ranging from 4 to 14 years old — registered, with about 30 of them in cheerleading and 50 in flag football.

He’s still receiving calls daily from parents interested in getting their children involved.

Organizers are still recruiting more players and coaches.

Additionally, Wood hopes to be able to partner with more corporate sponsors in supporting HWSYC. “I’ve been coaching for a while, and the best thing is watching the kids enjoy being together,” Wood said. “We’re giving them a good atmosphere and the ability to succeed, but the camaraderie with the kids is what has helped us get so big so fast. The kids are all friends, and that’s been the blessing with everything. They’re in school all day, and then they get to come out and play and have fun on the field together.”

cal memberships or attractive drop-in rates to encourage her mostly female clientele to give Fusion a shot as a complementary fitness discipline.

“I think the benefit they get to doing boxing is just building on that empowerment,” Bowersox said. “It’s why I think it’s such a good marriage.”

Bowersox also wouldn’t mind getting a few of the clients at Fusion — some worldclass fighters — to drop in for a class or two at her studio, and Carmichael believes the benefits can be reciprocal.

“Doing both will help the clients,” Carmichael said. “We can teach them the force of their flexibility. Barre is more flexibility and we’re more power and speed. … If our clients come over (to Barre Strong), they can gain the flexibilityside of fitness. It’s a win-win situation for everybody.”

FHSAA-sponsored op-ed a reminder to take scholarship pursuit in stride

A

bout a month ago, the Florida High School Athletic Association sent a media release containing an op-ed piece titled, “The Truth about Sports Scholarships.”

Authored by Bob Gardner, executive director of the National Federation of State High School Associations, and George Tomyn, executive director of the FHSAA, the piece has appeared in publications around the state and beyond.

It is a rebuke of sorts of the treatment by some parents of the college scholarship for their son or daughter as a holy grail, and it highlights what the authors perceive as some of the benefits of high-school sports over club

or her final year or two of high school.

The truth, though, is when you talk to as many young athletes as I have interviewed over the years, you meet kids who are burned out, in the process of becoming burned out or have — at age 15, for instance — already burned out on one sport and moved on to another.

Something you won’t read about as often is that even athletes who make it to college often burn out there and return home or transfer after a few semesters. College sports can be pretty great, but they also can be pretty cut-throat, especially at high-profile programs where the livelihood of coaches depends on wins and losses.

Then again, I’d be remiss if I didn’t note some teens love the grind and thrive on the structure a scholarship pursuit lends to their adolescence.

Absent of a scathing hot take on the matter or a onesize-fits-all solution, I do know experience and years of observation have taught me that more athletes and their parents might benefit from taking things in stride and enjoying the ride.

High-school sports are a really cool thing.

They are fun, and they are rooted in community.

It’s something I’m reminded of when I see someone such as Dr. Phillips senior Daniel Love — a basketball star who will play collegiately at Mercer — playing for the Panthers’ boys volleyball team this spring.

After all, why not make a few more memories in your final days as high-school senior?

I admire the hard work and dedication of our studentathletes here in West and Southwest Orange and enjoy

reporting on them when they earn scholarship offers and ink an NLI. It’s an incredible thing, and we know from reader response that the community takes pride in these achievements.

But consider this a friendly reminder to stop and smell the roses a bit and enjoy the ride. Whether it ends with an athletic scholarship or not, a high-school sports career is a pretty wonderful time.

and travel sports. It is also a rebuke of specializing in and playing one sport year-round — an increasingly popular trend that student-athletes continue to gravitate toward at younger ages.

Some of the information cited is illuminating. Studies suggest that fewer than 2% of all high-school athletes (one in 54) will play Division I athletics; many Division I athletic scholarships do not cover as much of the costs of attendance as is popularly believed; and finally, even when an athlete beats the odds and achieves a Division I scholarship, its payout may not come close to the amount of money spent on years of travel sports and showcases.

Personally, while I’m obviously a big fan of highschool sports, I’m also not a big detractor of club sports.

I get it — this is how recruiting has evolved, and in a lot of ways, it makes sense.

It is much easier for a college basketball coach to attend an AAU showcase with hundreds of teams and thousands of players in one place on a Saturday during the offseason than to try to squeeze in highschool games on weeknights.

I also understand how a junior or senior two-sport athlete may want to focus in on one of those sports for his

His teacher shared the letters with Mrs. Jackson. When my son arrived at school the next day, she had written a note to every child answering their questions and left the notes on their desks.” Principal Jackson’s TFA families, teachers, and daughters count it as a joy to walk alongside her everyday!
