A Winter Park-area teenager who deputies say confessed to fatally stabbing his mother has been deemed incompetent to stand trial.

On Feb. 28, law-enforcement officials arrested Michael King, 18, and charged him with first-degree murder for fatally stabbing his mother, Nancy Noone. King later confessed to the crime, according to deputies.

The crime occurred inside their family home at 633 Cornwall Road, just outside Winter Park city limits near Winter Park High School and Brookshire Elementary School.

The affidavit states Noone’s death is the direct result of being stabbed and having her throat cut by Michael King, and that “the statement of facts is supported by physical evidence.” A court order in February denied bond for King and refused contact with his family.

The arrest affidavit also stated King had repeatedly fantasized about committing an act of murder but had only just acted on it. King further explained the murdering of his mother “was unprovoked in that there was no conflict leading up to the actual murder,” according to the arrest affidavit. He also provided details on how he carried out the act, according to deputies.

King was presented to Cir-

cuit Court Judge Dan Travers during a March 18 hearing.

According to court records, three mental health experts — Dr. Jeffrey Danziger, Dr. Ryan Hall and Dr. Alejandro Arias — have evaluated King at the Orange County Jail five times before an evidentiary hearing April 5. The first evaluation occurred three days after the arrest and the last nine days before the hearing. They unanimously deemed him incompetent because of mental illness.

Travers reviewed the matter and findings and also heard testimony from Danziger, Hall and Arias at the April 5 hearing.

Records also stated King had hurt himself during his incarceration by banging his head in what Danziger described as a “significant injury” in “a stated attempt to kill himself.”

The Orange County Jail’s doctor has since prescribed King with anti-psychotic prescription drugs, which the document notes has so far had a positive effect.

“The court independently adjudicates defendant incompetent to proceed due to mental illness, and he is hereby committed to the Department of Children and Families,” the document stated.

Following Travers’ April ruling, King was directed to the Department of Children and Families to be placed in a mental-health treatment facility.

iana Whitted was on her last legs just a few months ago.

Following a separation from her husband of 28 years, the Kissimmee resident was struggling financially — she said she was doing everything she could to keep the lights on for her and her three children.

“There was no money for phone bills,” Whitted said. “My daughter had a fever one day; I couldn’t even call the pediatrician to make an appointment. My car could have been taken from me any day.”

It was around this time she met a representative from the Winter Park Day Nursery, who asked to take a look at some of her bills.

Shortly after, the nursery staff paid those bills with a crisis emergency grant, supplied Whitted’s 1-year-old daughter, Makenna, with new diapers and clothes and eventually admitted her into the preschool.

It’s been a miraculous experience for the young mother.

“I cried, I’m going to cry now,” Whitted said. “Just the fact that the organization has a system in place and is so giving and so sensitive for families and helping others … I can’t even put it into words how (they) helped me.”

Whitted is just one of many people who have been helped by the preschool over the last several decades. The Winter Park institution recently celebrated 80 years of providing affordable education and child care for children and working families in need.

“There’s a lot of research that talks about the importance of developing children’s brains between the years of zero and 5,” Day Nursery Executive Director Ali DeMaria said. “The things they learn and the environments they

are in during those formative years … it’s when they’re going through those developmental milestones and creating their personalities.

The effects of being in a loving and supporting and safe environment (are) immense.”

HELPING OTHERS

The preschool cares for 65 student who are 6 weeks to 5 years old in a number of different ways, including early literacy, math readiness, and social and emotional development.

The school employs a creative curriculum through which the children are encouraged to make choices and ask questions throughout each day. The school’s teachers provide experiences and learning situations to promote mental growth.

Sometimes, that growth can be found in unexpected ways. Former Executive Director Lynda Mays remembers one child at the school who refused to listen to his teachers.

“In talking with him and playing him, she and I realized he was deaf,” Mays said. “That’s why he wasn’t responding to us. … We got him into a home for deaf (children). Things like this happened all the time. Throughout Orange County, there are kids that went through Winter Park Day Nursery that are successful.”

Winter Park Day Nursery specializes in offering subsidies and scholarships for families who don’t qualify for government assistance so they can send their children to the preschool.

Seventy percent of the nursery’s families receive some form of financial support, either from the preschool or the state, according to DeMaria. She said a pre-K student’s tuition is about $140 per week, while an infant’s tuition is $250 per week.

The school has started its crisis fund program in recent years to help working families from missing payments that would affect their ability to work and pay for child care.

“We found so many times that a parent’s car would break down, and then they wouldn’t be able to pay for child care, because they’d pay for the car,” DeMaria said.

The organization needs the help of patrons to help families cover the crisis program and tuition subsidies — it typically has a budget of a little more than $1 million, according to DeMaria — and hosts an annual function to thank its benefactors and raise more funds.

This year’s Spring Jubilee fundraiser, which raised more than $60,000, had Whitted telling her story to Day Nursery staff and donors.

The preschool has seen changes over the last several decades — it now prides itself on its educational programs — and the support and enthusiasm from the community hasn’t wavered.

“We used to say we were kind of Winter Park’s best-kept secret, but we’re working on not being a secret anymore,” DeMaria said.

There’s something brewing behind the scenes at The Ravenous Pig. The award-winning Winter Park restaurant on Fairbanks Avenue is entering a new chapter with the announcement of a beer label, Ravenous Pig Brewing Company, and the construction of a 3,600-square-foot brewery next to the existing restaurant.

It’s a move that greatly increases the production of popular beer for which the flagship restaurant has become known.

Ravenous Pig Brewing Company will feature six 30-barrel fermenters — a total of 180 barrels — compared to the 40 barrels in the existing brewing space at The Ravenous Pig. “This is something we’ve been wanting to do for a while,” chef and co-owner James Petrakis said. “Just to supply ourselves, from a business mind set, makes sense. It helps fuel it.

“I think the excitement for us as a team and my brotherin-law, Larry (Foor), who’s the brewmaster, is just to be able to actually put our product into the market,” he said. “We get a lot of calls about our beer, and we haven’t been able to ever get it into the market, let other people try it in other places that are not mine and just get our name out that, ‘Hey, we’re making some really cool beers, some very good beers that we feel like can compete with anybody.’”

The new facility will be under Foor’s watch and will serve as the production and distribution hub for The Ravenous Pig and its sister restaurant, The Polite Pig at Disney Springs. It also will supply Cask & Larder-branded beers for their restaurant located in Terminal B of Orlando International Airport.

Meanwhile, the existing brewing space inside The Ravenous Pig will be used to create specialty, limited-release or experimental beers.

“The new facility will really focus on our six core brands that we’ll hit the market with — our

IPA, our red, our pale ale, our golden ale, we’re coming out with a lager and then we’re going to have a lighter saison or gose,” Petrakis said. “It frees up the 40-barrel system to do one-off, kind of funkier beers or artistic beers — very, very craft. These are only going to be available in our taproom and than also to some of our friends like Redlight — some of the bigger beer bars that we’re friends with that want to carry those one-off, funky beers for the true beer lovers.

“It fits so well with what we do at Ravenous of changing our menu all the time and doing seasonal, cool ingredients,” he said. “We’re going to focus that 40-barrel system the same way we look at our menu, which is, ‘Hey, let’s make this ever-evolving. Let’s give people different things.’ You come in and there’s a new beer to try.”

There’s also plans for a phase two: an event space/beer garden located between the restaurant and the brewery that will feature a 20-person private dining table, plus an outdoor turf space with capacity for 50 guests.

Petrakis remembers opening Cask & Larder six years ago and venturing into the brewing business for the first time.

It’s amazing for him, his wife, Julie Petrakis, and Foor to see Ravenous Pig Brewing Company becoming a reality, James Petrakis said.

“It’s kind of surreal, and it’s great, because I remember the first five or six years we were open at Ravenous, we were closed on Sundays and Mondays, and so I would be in there prepping with chefs, and my brotherin-law would be in there basically home brewing on the stove — just practicing, wanting this to happen,” James Petrakis said.

“We were all just having a good time and making good food. He was learning how to brew beer, and to see where we’re at now — and where we’re on the cusp of where we think we can take this — is really great.

“We feel like we’ve built something that can really withstand the times,” he said. “We’re excited for sure — we’re very, very blessed.”

The early stages of construction on the new brewery began earlier this month, and James Petrakis said the new facility should be open and ready to sell beer by around mid- to lateAugust.

Friends remember Gwinn TIM FREED ASSOCIATE EDITOR

H

e was larger than life — yet life was never about him.

The Winter Park High School community is mourning the loss of a loving father, son, mentor, friend and graduate in Derek Gwinn, who died suddenly April 3. He was 58.

Gwen was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and his family moved in 1972 to Winter Park. As a student at Winter Park High, Gwinn enjoyed great success on the football field as an offensive and defensive lineman, moving on after graduation in 1979 to compete on the gridiron for Georgia Tech.

His play got him noticed at the NFL level, and Gwinn enjoyed a two-year stint with the Kansas City Chiefs.

For years after his graduation, Gwinn felt the calling in his heart to support his high school, joining the Winter Park High School Foundation to support and fundraise various projects and improvements.

The foundation’s Director of Charitable Giving Vince Furey was a close friend of Gwinn for the past seven years.

“He loved Winter Park High School, loved Winter Park High School football, loved the community of Winter Park, and he was just one of these guys that had this big personality,” Furey said. “Somebody at his funeral said the energy of a room changed when he walked into it. That’s an absolute fact. He just had this personality that would pick you up and make you feel bigger than you are.

“If we had some need (at the foundation), he would help network and help facilitate an oppor-

tunity to meet that need, whether that was him personally or other contacts he had in the community,” he said. “He was definitely a doer. … It didn’t have to be just the football team, it could be anything really related to the high school. … There was never a ‘no’ from Derek.”

Some of the projects Gwinn helped support included the repainting and renovation of the school’s athletic center weight room and main hallway, as well as the purchase of the signature inflatable Willie the Wildcat tunnel the football team runs through at home games.

projects and fundraising. Beyond his first priority — which was always pouring into his daughter, Jordan Alexis, and son, Jack Henry — Gwinn also took many Winter Park student-athletes under his wing.

“He was a guy who was really mentoring kids on the team,” Furey said. “He wasn’t just showing up and watching; he was actually working with kids and players. It’s something that he loved to do. There was a bunch of kids (who) were really positively impacted by the time he took personally to spend with them.

“Certainly, a lot of it revolved around football, because he was an offensive lineman too,” he said.

“But I think part of it is also just becoming a man, balancing athletics and academics and being the right person. Derek seemed like he never had a down day. He was always up, always positive and always boosted up your spirits when you were around him.”

It was an incredible thing to witness for former Winter Park High School football defensive

coordinator Charles Friedley, who coached Gwinn on the football field and also taught his 10thgrade biology class.

Friedley remembers how well Gwinn balanced athletics and academics — a key factor that got him into Georgia Tech.

It was special to watch Gwinn mentor students pursuing their own success, Friedley said.

“As far as being a person that accomplished a lot, he wanted to give it back,” he said. “He wanted to give it back to his community and his school. That was his endeavor.”

Winter Park High School assistant football coach Johnny Miller saw much of that mentoring firsthand, as well. He grew up with Gwinn and witnessed him grow as both a football player and a person.

“He was a kid that went to Winter Park and got a lot out of Winter Park — it was his high school, and he gave back,” Miller said. “It’s refreshing to see people (who) are willing to do that.”

Winter Park High graduate Neal Hayes met Gwinn during his years as a Wildcat on the track and field team — Hayes was a runner and Gwinn threw the shot put and discus. They both graduated in the class of 1979 and were close friends until Gwinn’s passing, Hayes said.

Gwinn was easy to spot in a crowd because of his large football frame — standing at about 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds — but the size of the man’s heart far exceeded his stature.

“He was larger than life — both literally and figuratively,” Hayes said. “He was great at reaching out to people and always tried to help out people any way he could.

He wasn’t good at receiving help.

He was like, ‘What can I do for you?’ more than what you could do for him.”

Gwinn is survived by his daughter, Jordan Alexis; son, Jack Henry; father, William B. Gwinn; brother, W. Bradford Gwinn, Jr.; sister-in-law, Cheri; nephew, Justin; niece, Kelsey; and his “lady love,” Sheryl King.

Three suspects still at large CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

at around 2:02 p.m. and a woman living in the home told officers she was awakened by her security system at about 3:50 a.m. She and her husband searched the home but didn’t notice anything missing. Later that morning, she discovered her wallet was missing from her bag, which had been sitting next to a door leading to the garage. The wallet contained $50, four credit cards, her driver’s license, a Starbucks gift card and a Disney MagicBand — a bracelet that serves as a Disney World theme park annual pass.

The woman who called Winter Park police later reached out with a photo of a potential suspect wearing her MagicBand while riding the Magic Kingdom ride Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin.

The Winter Park Police Department tweeted the photo in the hopes of catching the suspect.

“Hey friends and #DisTwitter, we need your help identifying this man,” the department tweeted. “A residential burglary occurred and the suspect was captured using a (MagicBand) that was stolen during that time. These guys are definitely not Galactic Heroes.”

It was later determined the man shown in the photo on the ride was not involved in the burglary, and the initial tweet was deleted.

“It has come to light that the person(s) shown in our prior post are not associated with the burglary in WP,” the department tweeted. “The information initially provided to us regarding the photo was deemed to be inaccurate. We apologize to the persons pictured and to anyone who was adversely affected.”

CHIROPRACTOR ROBBED AT GUNPOINT

Tuesday, April 9.

Winter Park police officers responded at around 2:51 p.m. to a call of a reported robbery at Pain Free Chiropractic at 1320 S. Orlando Ave. Suite No. 4. While on their way to the scene, officers received a call with a description of a black male suspect, who left the scene in a black Chevrolet Silverado pickup. The suspect was seen crossing Pennsylvania Avenue on Fairbanks Avenue heading eastbound.

“We got behind the pickup — it was stolen; he was in a stolen vehicle,” Winter Park Police Department Lt. John Montgomery said. “He took off and we initiated pursuit. We went up north on Lakemont, up on Lake Howell, and I think it was Tuscarora Trail that he ended up crashing into the back of a car, got out of the truck and took off. We brought all of the troops out to look for him and couldn’t find him.”

The suspect escaped, but an

investigation is continuing, Montgomery said.

Winter Park police officers also are searching for the suspect that robbed the TD Bank at 810 N. Orlando Avenue Wednesday, April 10.

At about 3:30 p.m., a white, male suspect wearing a baseball cap, a white shirt with a red logo, khaki pants and sunglasses entered the bank and robbed it without a firearm or weapon before fleeing the scene.

An Orlando Police Department canine unit responded as well, but an attempt to track the suspect was unsuccessful.

Winter Park police obtained a still photograph of the suspect through security cameras and believe the suspect is about 6 feet tall and 170 pounds.

Hitting the road The Bike 5 Cities event will have hundreds of cyclists riding 28 miles across five cities.

Winter Park resident Lisa Portelli has always been an avid bicyclist.

Even at a young age, she would bike as far as 28 miles or more.

On her many bike rides, Portelli — a self-described bike commuter, road cyclist and triathlete who lives on a bike — has seen the many back roads, trails and secret nooks and crannies that fill up the Central Florida region and the many cities within.

Three years ago, Portelli decided others in the Central Florida area should be encouraged to cycle and see the same sights that she has.

“People always ask me, ‘Where do you ride?’” Portelli said. “We need to show people there are bike-friendly roads and trails in this community and show where they are.”

On Saturday, May 4, hundreds of bikers will gather at Mead Botanical Garden in Winter Park for the start of the third annual Bike 5 Cities event put together by Bike/Walk Central Florida. The event will have bicyclists starting in Winter Park and traveling to Orlando, Casselberry, Maitland and Eatonville before returning to Winter Park.

“It’s for riders of all ability levels,” said Katie Clarke, event manager for Bike 5 Cities. “If you’re

less comfortable, jump on for the group ride, there will be experienced cyclists in the group. Twenty-eight miles on a bike is not as long as it (sounds), especially if you’re stopping and taking water breaks and getting snacks and getting on the road again.

TAKE A RIDE

Bike 5 Cities can serve as a leisurely ride through many of Central Florida’s cities — but the staff at Bike/Walk Central Florida hope it can be a wake-up call to the many ways to get around the area, as well.

“It was initially launched because Bike/Walk Central Florida wants to encourage people to get out on their bikes,” Clarke said. “We want them to ride not just for recreation but for transportation purposes. Maybe when you’re going to dinner or running an errand. We realized there was need for people to know what routes to take so they wouldn’t have to take high-speed roads. It’s a fun bike ride, but it’s also to raise awareness. Cities are fully invested, which we love.”

was to find a route that could link between the five municipalities on bike-friendly roads. The surprising thing was that she finished designing the route in an hour.

“I sat down, and it was in my head,” Portelli said. “I thought, ‘I know I can do this,’ and started at Mead Garden, because I knew the Orlando Urban trail and the Cady Way trail, and I knew where the Casselberry connectors were.

I know the roads that I ride on …

I put it all together, and there it was.”

The starting point at Mead Botanical Garden will have between 200 and 250 riders, with the rest being able to leave from starting points at their own cities in case they want to bike faster or at a more relaxed pace, Clarke said.

Those multiple starting points also allow for more riders to join the event. The first registered riders at Mead Botanical Garden receive a free T-shirt.

Each city sets up its own rest stop with water and healthy snacks. City mayors have issued declarations from the rest stops in years past, Clarke said. The organization has had conference calls with representatives from each city’s local government.

Maitland Parks and Recreation Director Jay Conn said Bike/Walk Central Florida supplies much of the fruit and refreshments; his staff merely sets up the station for arriving bicyclists.

“We have water and snacks for the riders,” Conn said. “We have a Parks staffer at the table there as the riders come through. … The (cyclists) are riding together, and four of them signed up to leave from Maitland.”

The first year started with 50 or 60 riders signing up beforehand but eventually grew to 200 riders.

The second year had about 300 riders. Staff expects this year to have around 300 riders, as well, but hopes to see the number grow even higher by May 4.

“Get a helmet and go to a trail — that’s my first advice,” Portelli said. “You still have to watch the crossings, but I really steer people toward our network of trails.”

Helmets are required for the Bike 5 Cities event.

Rollins students in the Writing Books for (and with) Children capstone class were partnered with children from the center to help them create vibrant picture books. 70-year-old physician Dr. Maria Bors has been a client of Elite for seven years and finds that training there fits quite nicely into her busy lifestyle.

“The 20-minute workouts are easy for me to fit in and I find them easy to commit to,” Bors said.

Rather than working out with sweaty, bulked-up gym rats, Elite’s clients find an almost Zen-like atmosphere, with trainers attentive to their every motion.

Speaking in tones of calm assurance, trainers offer equal parts encouragement and challenge, pushing clients to new levels.

The workouts are physically demanding, but not in the way one might expect.

than being in a great museum or collection or anything. These are archival prints — these pictures will outlive all of us. To know that each person has one … it’s so beautiful.”

Chandler said Livingston and Daniels choose the sages based on a number of reasons: their time growing up in the community, their vocation in the community, whether they went to church or whether they have advocated for the community, among many other factors.

“It’s to celebrate the everyday man and woman and their contributions to the community,” Chandler said.

One of those sages featured in the collection is the Rev. Hayward Cleveland, who was born in 1931 in Winter Park. He was an auto mechanic before he was called to work in ministry.

Cleveland said he was thrilled to be a part of the project.

“I think it’s a splendid thing,” he said. “It’s wonderful to be able to participate in this, because of the fact that it gives us a chance to tell what we did and how we’ve come along. All of this has

changed — this used to be dirt streets. Right here used to be a tangerine garden.”

There’s also Glenn Lenora Smith Franklin, who was born in 1937 and moved to Winter Park with her husband in 1987.

The portrait project was a special experience, Franklin said.

“It was beautiful,” she said. “I just wish my husband was here.”

“I think it’s wonderful.”

“The Sage Project Phase II” adds to an existing permanent collection that dates back to 2012.

Chandler said she hopes visitors that see the exhibit take something special from it — and also feel a call to action.

“The charge is always for them to go back and find out the history of their elders — their sage in their community,” Chandler said. “A lot of times there’s so many untold stories and without those stories we kind of repeat the same patterns. Having those stories dug out and brought to the forefront is the charge.”

The Sage Project Phase II is a collection at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center of 17 portraits and life stories of senior residents now in their 80s and 90s.

Each of the residents captured in the portraits — referred to as “sages” in the exhibit — is a native or longtime resident of Winter Park’s west side community.

“It is special on many levels,” Hannibal Square Heritage Center Executive Director Barbara

Chandler said. “We call this a very home-grown exhibition. …

This is the way of the elders being able to share their stories before they pass. Their stories impact us in so many different ways. …

These stories are a legacy to what keeps Hannibal Square what it is — these are the people.”

It’s a collection of life histories captured by Hannibal Square historians Fairolyn Livingston and Mary Daniels through a series of interviews. The accompanying portraits were captured by photographer and Crealdé School of Art CEO/Executive Director Peter Schreyer.

“It really was rewarding and humbling,” Daniels said. “It’s educational too because you learn so much more than you thought you knew in hearing their personal stories and their journey.”

Each sage family was given their own copy of the photograph and bio — an item that will stay in the family for generations. It’s an incredibly rewarding project to be a part of, Schreyer said.

“It’s the best the arts can get in my book,” he said. “This is better
