Rotary to launch new club in Horizon West Horizon West resident Bryan Fifer is leading the way toward launching the club this July.

As Horizon West continues to grow and establish its brand, the opportunities for community involvement are increasing, too.

For Horizon West resident Bryan Fifer, giving back to and making a difference in the community is something he enjoys doing, and he wanted to share that with others who are likeminded.

“I was at a networking event one night, and we started talking and asking each other, ‘Are you a part of Rotary?’ and nobody really was,” Fifer said.

“There were a couple of really good Rotary groups around here, but we said we wanted to start our own in Horizon West.

There’s one in Lake Buena Vista, Dr. Phillips, Winter Garden … they’re all over. We just decided, let’s just see what it takes to do our own for Horizon West as we try to brand that area.”

Throughout Rotary International, there are more than 35,000 Rotary clubs, and the goal of all of them is to serve others and promote integrity while advancing goodwill and peace through fellowship.

Fifer and his group approached Rotary about

starting their own Horizon West chapter and received approval. To start a new Rotary chapter, the group must have at least 25 people. Another option was becoming a satellite location to an existing chapter.

“We didn’t really know if we’d have 25 right away, so they have another program where you can be a satellite,” Fifer said. “We partner with Winter Garden (currently), and we were just going to have a satellite location of their club, so we would basically just meet separately. But we got enough support right away that we don’t really need to do that.”

During an initial information session about a month ago, Fifer and his team brought some people to Orange County National Golf Center and Lodge — where the chapter’s meetings will be held — to talk about the history and mission of Rotary, as well as some of its service projects. About 30 people showed up, but there are currently around 75 on the chapter’s interest list.

Starting May 15, the group will meet as a satellite to the Rotary Club of Winter Garden for about two months. Then, it will officially launch independently as Rotary Club of Horizon West July 1. Meetings will be held on the first and third

Several people on RCHW’s civic committee are working to find different service projects, Fifer said, but he hopes to be able to gather ideas from members once the chapter officially launches.

“We’re trying to really get out there and get with our members, once we launch our program, to talk about things that they’re interested in,” said Fifer, who will serve as RCHW’s first president. “We partner with Orlando Health, because they know of different projects in the community that they support, like Healthy West Orange, that we can maybe tag onto. We don’t really have a set plan yet…it’s really finding those little charities around town that we can help. We want to try to stay as close to the Horizon West area as we can.”

For those who aren’t sure of what being a Rotary member entails or those who are interested in joining, the RCHW group is hosting a social hour and information session Tuesday, April 23, at Bosphorous Turkish Cuisine in Hamlin.

The first 50 members to join RCHW will be considered charter members. It costs $50 to join as a new member, and there is a $20 monthly membership fee thereafter to cover the group’s costs.

“It’s a lot of energy to get it launched, but once we do and we can actually have 25 to 30 members showing up for meetings and we’re out in the community doing things, that’s probably ultimately where the satisfaction will come from,” Fifer said. “We’re excited about the community support already.”

indermere High thespians took one of Broadway’s longest-running shows to the stage from April 11 to 14 with their production of “Chicago High School Edition.”

The production featured a cast and crew of about 50 students. The classic American musical takes place in the city of Chicago during the 1920s and is based on a 1926 play of the same name written by journalist Maurine Dallas Watkins. The story, based on actual crimes and criminals, is a satirical interpretation of the administration of criminal justice and the concept of a “celebrity criminal.”

“It’s actually based on true stories, which is really cool,“ said BambiEllen Fadoul, show director and a drama teacher for the school. “It’s (about) the fight for fame and how far you’ll go to get it.”

Fadoul added the high-school edition of “Chicago” was released this year and said Windermere High was the first in Orange County to produce the high-school version. She also said one of the reasons she chose “Chicago High School Edition” as the spring musical was to challenge her students.

“I chose ‘Chicago’ for the sole purpose that these kids have done a lot of standard musical theater … (and) they needed something different,” Fadoul said. “I wanted to give them something that was a little bit more challenging. …

The high-school edition (of ‘Chicago) was just released this year, so we’re actually the first ones in the area to do this (show).”

Attendees took part in either a 5K or 10K route, and a free fun run was held for the little ones. Windermere has had big plans in the works for several years relating to a mini trail system that would connect the entire town.

Following the approval to purchase about 5.6 acres of railroad right-of-way for $250,000 extending from 12th Avenue to Windermere Road in March 2018,

one of many future deals Town Manager Robert Smith seeks to complete over the next three years with property owners who possess land the town requires to fulfill its vision.

“Think of a mini West Orange Trail that would extend from 12th Avenue all the way up Main Street,” Smith said. “You would have a trail system that would connect the entire town — both north and

south. Because right now, you can’t get golf carts across the bridge, so with this, you’re connecting all your HOAs in the north of town to the old town proper. You’re also connecting residents to other residential areas, educational facilities, the library, Windermere Elementary School, and you’d be connecting them to the town functions, the town square, the police department.

“And then our intent is also to extend it down to Sixth Avenue to the grove,” he said. “So you’re taking care of commercial, educational, civic, religious — because you have the church right up here, too — all through a trail system. So that means that you don’t have to get on to Main Street.”

Before the town can begin to build the trail system/linear park, it will need to strike a few deals with a number of property owners to obtain needed right-of-way to fulfill the town’s vision. Smith said he is speaking with 13 different property owners located south of Eighth Avenue.

“Currently, there are the property owners that are south of Eighth Avenue I need to work with, because I don’t want to go through an eminent domain,” he said. “I want to see if we can do a compromise between the property own-

ers and the town to accomplish a good goal. And so that’s where the property swaps come in, because there are gaps that we have in here.

Some of the properties to the north — I’m probably just gonna have to pay them money for it, because the swaps don’t really make any sense.

But the property owners south of Eighth — most of them picked up the deal I offered.”

There are three phases to the project, and the estimated start of construction for phase one of the trail system is still to be determined.

“We want to start working on it, especially phase one, which will probably be from Sixth Avenue all the way up to Windermere Road,” he said. “And then phase two would probably be from Sixth Avenue to the Grove area. And this would be phase three. So, I’ll start working on acquiring additional properties north of Main Street. And then, we pretty much have all the property that we need in the east to get to The Grove area. So I’ll start working on grants and earmark some stuff so we can, hopefully, get some additional funding to offset the costs, which is probably going to be between $2 to $3 million for the project, and that’s including everything.”

OCPS resurrects Top Talent competition The school district’s ‘American Idol’-style competition will feature several performers from the West Orange area.

Orange County Public Schools’ county-wide student talent show is returning this year after a fouryear break.

The OCPS Top Talent event will take place Saturday, April 27, at The Plaza Live, 425 N. Bumby Ave. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the show will start ad 7 p.m.

Ticket prices range from $17 to $27 depending on seating.

OCPS Top Talent showcases the creativity of students from all over Orange County. The event, organized by Foundation for OCPS, features a competition for performance arts as well as the visual arts.

The performing-arts competition will feature performances from 15 finalists and two featured performances. The 15 finalists will perform in a live show and be judged by a group of celebrity judges the day of the event. The winners and honorable mentions for the visual-arts competition were selected April 17 — after press time. Those individuals will have their artwork displayed at the event, said Debi Pedraza, senior director of Foundation for OCPS. “It’s kind of similar to a live competition like ‘American Idol’ or ‘America’s Got Talent’ — it’s that type of a show,” Pedraza said. “In

both the performing arts (competition) and the visual arts (competition), folks can vote for their fan favorites.”

Pedraza said there were 113 audition submissions for the performing-arts competition and nearly 200 submissions for the visual-arts competition. In addition to judges selecting winners, the public is welcome to vote on a “fan favorite.”

Visual- and performing-arts winners as well as fan-favorite winners will receive gift cards and their schools also will receive money to fund arts programs. Proceeds raised from the event will benefit the Foundation for OCPS and provide arts enrichment for students experiencing poverty or homelessness, Pedraza said.

Eight-year-old Alexis Pirone, a second-grader at Lake Whitney Elementary, is one of the featured performers of the show. Whether it’s singing, dancing or acting, the rising triple-threat loves being on stage. She will be singing and playing the piano for her performance, and her chosen tune is Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”

“I’ve been playing the piano for a couple of months, and I’ve been singing for … a long time,” Pirone said. “(I like piano), because it’s fun to move your fingers around on it. … It’s fun to play different songs, because if you don’t play it correctly, you know it sounds different, (but) it’s fun to change it up and make it into your own song.”

Pirone began taking piano lessons in December, but she learned

and memorized couple of songs on it months before the lessons began. Her dad, Tony, taught her how to play “Creep” by Radiohead last year so she could play the song for her mom on Mother’s Day. Her singing teacher liked it so much that she asked her to play it during a recital. After that, her dad taught her how to play “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.” She’s also beginning to learn the ukulele and, eventually, plans to learn the guitar.

“She started taking actual piano lessons in December, but she’s not a beginner piano player,” Tony Pirone said. “She plays at a fairly advanced level. … She shines when she gets up on stage.”

Roig and Dotson are both freshman at Windermere High School, and Janney is an eighth-grader at Bridgewater Middle School. The trio met while taking dance classes at The Right Combination Dance Studio in Winter Garden.

“We’ve all been going to this studio for four years now, and we started (dancing) trios two years ago,” Dotson said.

“We all love dancing together, so we wanted to do a (dance) group together,” Roig said, adding that they had some help choreographing the routine they’ll be performing at the show.”We had someone come in and choreography for us.”

“It’s a jazz dance,” Janney said.

“We’re really excited and just overwhelmed that we got accepted.”

their competition dance routine last summer and have performed it previously at competitions.

“We’re a very upbeat and fun group to watch,” she said. “We always put everything we have into (our performance).”

The Foundation for OCPS started Top Talent in 2012. In 2015, the foundation put Top Talent on pause to organize and prepare the OCPS Hall of Fame event. Moving forward, Top Talent and Hall of Fame event will alternate each year.

Preschool denied CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

The proposed project, named Wondermere Garden Preschool, was to be located on a 22-acre property situated on the east side of Windermere Road and near McKinnon Road in a predominantly residential area surrounded by singlefamily homes.

“I just ask you deny the applicant’s request and keep our neighborhood a neighborhood and keep the childcare facility out, as it is a commercial business, and just keep it as a nice place to live,” said town of Windermere resident Sara Ruffner.

The project, which was first introduced to area residents in a community meeting Jan. 30, triggered concerns from the surrounding community from the beginning, primarily pertaining to traffic on Windermere Road, excessive noise, on-site vehicle stacking, and potential impacts to the wetlands and wildlife on the property.

Nonetheless, the project received a 6-1 approval by the county’s Board of Zoning Adjustment Feb. 7, subject to 13 conditions.

The applicant behind the proposed project, Bryan Potts, aimed to construct a preschool for up to 200 children ages 18 months to 6 years old.

According to the site plan, the project included a 15,000-square-foot main building, a playground, 74 parking spaces and a 2,000-squarefoot ancillary building.

And although some agreed

the preschool sounded OK on paper, many believed the proposed location was not a good fit, particularly as a traffic study estimated the preschool would generate about 822 new trips to Windermere Road on a daily basis.

“Don’t disrupt a residential area by putting a commercial project in it,” said Raymond Kellett, an area resident who spoke at the April 9 hearing.

Before making a motion to deny the proposed preschool, Orange County District 1 Commissioner Betsy VanderLey emphasized that, despite the variety of concerns expressed at the hearing, her reason to propose a denial comes down to the project’s incompatibility with the surrounding residential area and concern that approving it would set a dangerous precedent.

“There are a number of things that have been brought forward today … but at the end of the day, this is simply a decision on whether this is a piece of property that is appropriate for this type of development,” VanderLey said. “And that’s full stop. We are not here to comment or make motions on whether there’s a need for a preschool in the area or properties surrounding it, but I will tell you that I’ve been checking addresses of everyone here who has commented, and there hasn’t been a single person who lives in the rural settlement that has been for this project. And that speaks volumes to me right there.”

During the public forum, they stated Windermere Town Manager Robert Smith — and by extension, the town — acted in contradiction to two provisions in the town charter and in the Windermere Land Development Code.

On April 2, Smith requested Schretzmann-Myers resign from the Tree Board in a “closed-door meeting” involving Smith, Theresa Schretzmann-Myers, and Town Council Member Chris Sapp, who also serves as the Tree Board liaison.

According to Section 8.02 in the charter, which outlines the powers and duties of the town manager, a town manager has the power “to direct and supervise the administration of all departments and offices (except for) town boards or committees, unless directed by the Town Council.”

And the Windermere Land Development Code’s Section 11.04.01(1) states a town board member may only be removed “by a majority vote of the Town Council.”

“The charter is pretty clear that it’s the Town Council who makes that decision, and it should be in a public forum,” SchretzmannMyers said. “And, frankly, he and Chris Sapp called me into the office and demanded that I resign voluntarily. And I said I’m not going to voluntarily resign. If you want my resignation, you ask for it, and you tell me in writing why you want my resignation.”

cil members and town residents regarding the Tree Board’s lack of progress on projects. He also emphasized he did not forcibly remove her from the board and only requested her resignation, which was well within his power as town manager, he said.

“During that meeting, I suggested that the best way to move the Tree Board forward would be for her to step down as chairperson and resign from the Tree Board,” Smith said. “At that time, she accepted, with the condition that I draft a letter to her requesting her to resign, which I did. She drafted a letter in response accepting the request to resign, and that was it. … Yes, only the Town Council has the ability to remove somebody from a board or committee, but it says nothing about somebody resigning from a committee.

“When I asked her to possibly resign from the committee, she had the choice of either saying no and moving forward as chairperson or to resign,” he said. “So she had that choice. Nobody forced her to resign. No land-development codes or procedures were violated. … I’ve also discussed it with our attorneys, and we did nothing wrong. It was a resignation. She was not forced off the Tree Board. If she didn’t want to resign, she had that choice not to.”

Schretzmann-Myers said she ultimately resigned upon Smith’s request because she felt pressured and frequently came into conflict with the town manager and town staff.

“I resigned because when the town manager is constantly refusing to work with you, and you’re constantly butting heads,” she

said. “I mean, I would constantly have to ask them to follow their own tree ordinance.”

Schretzmann-Myers and her husband also implied the town may have committed a violation of Florida Sunshine Law — a series of state laws intended to make public records and government business more accessible and transparent to the public.

“I have reviewed the minutes of all recent meetings of the Town Council held in the sunshine, and I have found no direction, nor any discussion for that matter, by the Town Council to the town manager to interject himself into the administration of the Tree Board,” Ernest Schretzmann-Myers said.

“This is troubling because, at a minimum, both Council Member Sapp and Mayor (Jim) O’Brien knew that Mr. Smith would be seeking Mrs. Myers’ resignation at the April 2 meeting. This implies that (there was) either direct communication about the issue, or there was indirect communication through Mr. Smith as an intermediary.”

According to Florida Sunshine Law, a town or city manager may communicate with council members regarding town business, but elected officials, such as Town Council members, may not communicate with each other regarding government matters outside of public meetings that adhere to sunshine regulations.

Schretzmann-Myers, who volunteered on the board for 15 years, remains on the town’s Historical Preservation Board. Smith added he still looks forward to working with her in future projects.

The 90-acre Oakland Nature Preserve was dedicated during Oakland Heritage Day. The preserve includes nature trails and wooded wetlands and is the product of joint planning by the state of Florida, Orange

County Parks and Recreation Department, the Friends of Lake Apopka and the Friends of the Trail.

15 years ago

The Orange County School Board has approved the acquisition of a land bank site to provide the first high school to serve the Horizon West area in West Orange County. The site will be used for a relief school for West Orange High School, expected to be needed during the five-year period after 2008.

The site consists of two parcels containing a total of 77.29 acres,

located at the intersection of Winter Garden Vineland and Ficquette roads.

When the 2004 U.S. Olympic team walked into the stadium in Athens, Greece, for the opening ceremonies, each American athlete knew that “a sixth-grader in Winter Garden, Florida, believes in you!” Packets with encouraging letters, patriotic friendship bracelets and shell leis were completed by 100 students on the Dolphins Team at Lakeview Middle School. Athletes competing in the Paralympics received the packets, as well.

FROM THE ARCHIVES The Ruth Wood School of the Dance operated from Wood’s home in Ocoee. For many years, she provided instruction in ballet, tap and acrobatic dance to West Orange County boys and girls. Mindful of the possibly cacophonous sound of hundreds

of tiny tapping feet echoing throughout the land, the school’s brochure advised that “if the sound of taps is annoying, it may be practiced in ballet slippers.”

APRIL 15, 1971 The front page of The Winter Garden Times celebrated Walt Disney World with a photo of the first section of Monorail trains being lowered onto its concrete beam by handlers and technicians of the Martin-Marietta Company, which built the five-section trains.

According to the article, there were 337 concrete beams — stretching sixand-one-half miles — shuttling the Monorail from the parking lot and entrance complex to the Magic Kingdom theme park, as well as to the Contemporary Resort, the Polynesian Village and the Palm and Magnolia golf courses.

They were among the finishing touches to the vacation kingdom, which opened in October 1971.

Junior forward Gunnar Studenhofft has spent years playing for his country before arriving in Windermere last year.

During Windermere Prep’s Spring Break toward the end of March, many students went off to enjoy some down time.

Gunnar Studenhofft, a junior, could have been one of them, but instead, he was doing something that most athletes — and nonathletes — dream about: Playing for his country.

A native of the Cayman Islands, Studenhofft traveled to Bradenton to play alongside his fellow countrymen on the Under-17 National Soccer Team, which was competing at the IMG Academy in a CONCACAF tournament.

Although it wasn’t his first stint on the national team, being able to represent his home still remains as one of his proudest achievements.

“That means everything to me,” Studenhofft said. “I’m playing for my country; I’m representing the people where I come from. When I put on that shirt, it means more than football — it means country, it means family and your history.

Putting on that shirt and playing for my country is a big thing for me, and I’ll always be honored to play for my country.”

This past week, Olympia boys water polo’s Luke Carey was named the OCPS Athlete of the Year — celebrating a season of dominance by the senior.

This year, Carey broke the Olympia team all-time season-scoring record and has helped lead the boys to another district title and state-playoff appearance. The award is the first for Olympia since current NFL quarterback Trevor Siemian won it during his time at the school.

nder a gloomy, cloudy sky, a small group of family and friends make their way down the backstretch to the finish line.

Out front and leading the way is 11-year-old Daniel “DJ” Roberts, a cancer survivor who — despite running on the Avengers-themed prosthetic attached to his right leg — is outpacing everyone.

And although he is cold and soaked to the bone thanks to an early morning thunderstorm, with each step he takes, he knows he’s that much closer to his goal of completing the 2019 runDisney Star Wars Rival Run 5K at Epcot.

After running 3.1 miles, he can hear those around him chanting — “Way to go DJ! Keep it up DJ, you’re awesome!” — as he passes through the threshold to thunderous applause and a floodgate of tears.

“As soon as I crossed the finish line, I felt so happy — my mom was crying, Trevor Hicks (his physical trainer) was about to cry, and everyone that ran with me was basically crying,” said Daniel, a sixth-grader at Bridgewater Middle School. “When I crossed it, I wasn’t crying at all — which I don’t understand why — but I felt SEE RUNNING PAGE 20

like I accomplished a major goal to finish the race.”

The emotion of the moment was overwhelming for those who have been part of the journey with him — including his mother, Catherine, and younger sister, Jessica, who both ran alongside him Friday, April 5.

“I cried the entire race — I don’t think there was a moment where I wasn’t tearing up,” Catherine said.

A senior on the Windermere Prep baseball team, Logan Morris is a go-to guy when it comes to pitching for the Lakers. Growing up around athletes and having a passion for sports, Morris is hoping that once his time at Windermere Prep runs out, he will be able to continue his baseball career at the collegiate level.

When — and how — did you first get into baseball?

I started playing baseball in fourth grade. I don’t really know how I got into it — I guess it was seeing MLB on TV and being around college athletes growing up, because my dad was close to the LSU football program. I’ve grown up playing baseball my whole life and have played basketball and football — I’ve always been kind of a sports guy.

Starting my freshman year was when I was like, “All right, I need to pick one sport and dedicate my time to that.”

that weight on your shoulders and that pressure on you. That extra weight on my shoulders gives me that extra motivation and gives me that hype.

What has been the best thing about playing at Windermere Prep?

I love being on the team with a great group of guys that I know will always have my back. … And then my coach being there to uplift me whenever I’m down or if I’m having a bad day on the mound, I know he is going to be there to help me through it.

What’s some of the best advice that you’ve been given regarding baseball?

“There’s always another pitch.” If you’re constantly focused on that ball you threw last pitch, then this next pitch, you’re either going to get lucky and throw a strike or you’re going to be so caught up in yourself that you throw another ball. There’s always that second chance, basically.

What has been a highlight for you during your playing time as a Laker?

I threw a no-hitter this year, and then my last game I pitched in at TFA was probably my best game — it’s probably the strongest competition we’ve had, and I threw six innings, so I went all the way through.

How do you get ready to take the mound?

I don’t really like to get too involved into overthinking.

Basically, go out and do your job, and walk out like you own the place and you’re going to beat every single batter that comes up to that plate.

If you get to overthinking, then that just turns into a disaster.

Do you have a favorite pitch?

(I like to) mix it up for sure. I throw a curveball one pitch, or maybe I throw two fast balls in a row and they’re expecting another one, and then I’m going to throw a curveball — change it up a bit.

What’s your favorite aspect of being a starting pitcher?

Being able to have

Daniel’s story of perseverance started years before he took to the soggy pavements of Epcot on that most remarkable of mornings.

What doctors thought was a pulled muscle turned out to be more than that. It was February 2017 when an MRI showed that the knot in his leg was a tumor.

Immediately, Daniel was sent to UF Health Shands Hospital, where a flurry of tests showed that the then 9-year-old had osteosarcoma — a type of bone cancer. What happened next was a whirlwind of plans.

“For us, when looking back on it, there wasn’t a lot of time to process anything,” Catherine said. “I heard the words, and I said, ‘OK, let’s get started.’ We didn’t waste any time. We didn’t get a second opinion, and I didn’t wait to see if anything was going to go away. In retrospect, maybe — for my family — it worked out better that we didn’t waste any time.”

And every big decision that was made was made by Daniel himself, including the most difficult of all — whether to have his leg amputated. After taking his time, and having an opportunity to talk with a Crossfit athlete who had the same procedure done, he made the decision to go through with the surgery.

What followed were months of physical therapy as he got used to the new prosthetic leg — while at the same time continuing his chemo treatment. It was a time filled with difficult and demanding days, but when things got tough, he had Hicks to pick him up.

“He (Daniel) sets goals, and he would go in and get frustrated in therapy, and within the first five minutes Trevor would have him laughing,” Catherine said. “Or they would talk about Marvel and ‘Star Wars’ and comic books.”

That friendship that was developed between Daniel and Hicks was also the spark that led to Daniel deciding that he wanted to give running a shot.

t was a tough night at Bill Spoone Stadium for the Dr. Phillips boys lacrosse team, as the Panthers were handed a 10-7 loss to Timber Creek Wednesday, April 10.

Despite going into the half down 6-2, the Panthers (11-8) stormed back in the second half but fell just short against the Wolves (9-8).

The Panthers followed up their bout with Timber Creek with a 16-12 loss against Seminole.

In Bradenton, his Cayman Islands team was matched up against the U-17 teams from Nicaragua, Grenada and St. Vincent. The top-place finisher qualified and move on to the Gold Cup. During the qualifiers, the Cayman Islands played solid soccer, but a 3-0 defeat to eventual champs Nicaragua led to a second-place finish.

“The mental part of the game (is) where we fell off — we kind of were hesitant in our play,” Studenhofft said. “Nicaragua were capitalizing on our weaknesses, and they ended up taking advantage of that and got the win in that game.”

Not only were there challenges in dealing with a tough Nicaraguan side, but also Studenhofft played with an injury most of that week. But that didn’t ruin the fun — which included the highlight of beating Grenada with a dominant, quick style of soccer. It also didn’t negate just how much the team has grown over the years.

“Our team has improved so much over the years — coachingwise and player-wise,” Studenhofft said. “I’m looking to come back for the next tournament and be back out there doing my thing — scoring goals.”

Studenhofft has had a natural

knack for finding the back of the net ever since he was introduced to The Beautiful Game at 3 years of age.

Both of Studenhofft’s parents were talented soccer players in their day and motivated the budding star to dig deep into the sport. They saw his talent and potential, and wanted him to pursue his dreams of playing professionally.

Over the next several years, Studenhofft trained at multiple soccer academies, where he perfected his game. Such talent caught the attention of the soccer community in the Cayman Islands — leading Studenhofft to start playing for the U-13 National Team before going through each successive team after that.

“When I was 14 years old, I played on the Under-17 National Team — from a young age I have been playing on a high level,” Studenhofft said. “I’ve been growing with the program and its players — I’ve known every player since I was 10 years old — from the primary football league to the mens national team.”

Then in August 2018, Studenhofft made his next big move when he arrived at Windermere Prep, which he chose primarily for its academics (and soccer).

He said he originally learned about the school from a friend, who had also attended Windermere Prep.

Since then, Studenhofft has been living in Central Florida, which has required some adjustments — both on and off the soc-

cer field.

Under the guidance of Lakers head coach Jonathan Griffiths, Studenhofft has had to take time to learn the styles taught here in the States.

“I have to adjust to the pace of the game, especially at Rush Academy (his club team) — the level of football is high, and I enjoy being at a high level,” Studenhofft said. “Windermere (Prep) has helped me adjust to the way that America plays football, because where I come from, it’s a UK-based territory, so we are based on a UK style of football. Coming to America, I realize that I have a lot to learn, but I’ve realized this is only the beginning of my career.”

Making those adjustments and honing his game are vital for Studenhofft, especially if he wants to see his goals of playing at the collegiate and professional levels come to fruition.

And if he makes it to the highest of levels — whether that be the English Premier League or the Bundesliga (Germany) — there’s one thing that’ll stay with him for as long as he plays his game: The understanding that he is playing for more than just himself.

“I know I’m going to make it,” Studenhofft said. “I got to do this for my mom, my family — opportunities like this don’t come around to everyone. I’m fortunate to be at this school … and I hope to inspire many people from where I come from.”
